The B picture lives on in the films of John Carpenter. Prince of Darkness weds supernatural horror with quantum weirdness, when a group of theoretical-physics students, led by their professor, Birack (Victor Wong), joins forces with a priest (Donald Pleasence) to forestall the coming of the Dark Lord. His Darkness has been imprisoned in a cylindrical container as a swirling green plasma since time immemorial, and is now beginning to find his way out. All of this is bolstered by a lot of fancy science talk (all of which is real, I can assure you--someone did his homework), which allows us to settle down, say okey dokey, and enjoy the thrills that this presages. As the title character spreads his contagion through the group of students, holed up in a church to study the sequestered Satan, the film shapes up as an homage to George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, much like Carpenter's earlier film, Assault on Precinct 13. But this adds the twist of quantum physics dovetailing with religious orthodoxy, and in the bargain spawning numerous zombie minions. There are plenty of squishy splatter opportunities, the kind that make some affected people say, "This is a bad movie!" while they grin from ear to ear. Look for Alice Cooper as a street schizo. I think you'll recognize him. --Jim Gay

Required for the true horror collection..........2007-03-14
This is a great movie. There's a blend of sci-fi and horror - old fashioned horror from the 80s. This is a smart movie, a creepy movie, and a horror movie all rolled into one. You will apreciate the brilliance of John Carpenter after this. It has a slow steady pace that digs deep into your fears and eventually you will be dreaming about the movie and waking up scared to go back to sleep. Classic....must have for the collection. Watch it every 2 or 3 months or so...
Pretties For You.......2007-02-17
Figures. Just when I thought this movie was about the emergence of the AntiChrist, Alice Cooper himself shows up and all hell breaks loose.
........2007-02-06
This is a frustrating film. Slow burn pacing worked with "Halloween" because it mirrored its methodical killer. Here, the climax cries out for the action to speed up. Some would argue this off-beat aesthetic is what makes John John, but I feel the culprit here is having material enough for only fifty minutes. The levity was also a misjudgement. He should have played this one deadly straight. On the plus side, the photography, psychedelic score and chilling ending. Let's face it, John is macabre.
John Carpenter is the True "Prince of Darkness".......2006-12-04
This is another masterpiece from Carpenter. The other reviewers here and the synopsis of the film really say it all as far as plot goes, but what empressed me the most with this story is how Carpenter spends some real quality time helping us get to know the characters and getting attached to them. This is one of his more thoughtful suspenseful films even though it also does the requisite gory stuff. The script is extremely literate, even the scientific info is very acurate in the film.
The acting is well-above average for a chiller which is a nice change of pace from the typical acting in this genre. The special effects and make-up are a little dated, but still acceptable by today's standards. The music isn't as memorable as Halloween, The Fog, and The Thing, but it's still eerie and effective. The setting is appropriately claustrophobic. There are a few awkward moments in the film, but nothing significant to detract from the overall effect of the film.
This is an intelligent B-horror film that Carpenter gives the "A" treatment. This DVD belongs in your horror collection for sure.
So close..........2006-10-29
This is a very strange movie to review. Most people, upon seeing it for the first time, will dismiss it as a laughable b-movie. The thing about it, is that Carpenter comes THIS close to creating a masterpiece that would rival "The Exorcist".
"Prince of Darkness", if you give it another viewing or two, you will realize how close he came to greatness. Maybe if the budget had been higher, or if the cast had been a little more 'A list'. If you have seen many Carpenter movies, you will recognize many of the faces from his other movies, including a few from "Big Trouble In Little China", which itself is not just a good bad movie; it is a GREAT bad movie. But then, it's the cheesiness and low budget feel that makes it a Carpenter project.
This is a truly scary movie because the fear comes from the ideas presented, not bogeymen jumping out of closets. It invokes the concept of Quantum Physics, that things can be 'dreamed into existence', making almost anything, including true evil, possible.
To quote an actual scientist that I heard speak a while back: "If quantum physics doesn't scare the holy crap out of you...you don't understand quantum physics."

Great film (DPOD), outdated transfer. Inserts?.......2006-10-11
I had been seeking this OOP set for a long time. I am pleased to have found one from a third-party seller at a decent price. But I can see why this set was discontinued. The two films are obviously the earliest that Anchor Bay ever put on DVD. No time/track read-out, not anamorphic (still unknown obviously), slightly faded looking and rather damaged print used for "Dracula, Prince of Darkness"; "Satanic Rites..." looks good, but who cares since it's such a poor film. Accident-prone double-sided discs for both even though these discs don't have enough extras to be dual-layered single-sided!
Also, to anyone reading this: I got a factory-sealed copy on October 10, 2006. It has no inserts. Has anyone gotten one recently with no inserts? This is the only Anchor Bay DVD I have ever seen without them (they always have reproductions of the theatrical posters), and I'm trying to figure out whether it's a mistake in the packaging of my copy, or if AB ran out after a certain point while still pressing this short-lived set, and didn't bother to print any more. Comments from owners very much sought--especially if you remember *when* you got your copy! (I have also started a discussion below to try getting information on this.)
More Bang For The Buck.......2006-07-30
Prince Of Darkness is technically the third Hammer Dracula film, the second being Brides Of Dracula. This seems to play out a bit like a direct sequel to Horror Of Dracula considering the film begins with the finale of that film. Ten years after Van Helsing put the kabash on Dracula, the community is still living in fear, so much in fact that it's now standard practice at funerals to pound a wooden stake through the corpse, bite marks or not. Four sightseeing travellers come through Dracula's old stomping grounds and are warned to stay away from his castle, so naturally this is where they end up. They're lured there by a Dracula disciple who plans to use them for both Dracula's resurrection and lunch. After Drac comes back, and wipes out one of the couples, a deadly game of bat and mouse ensues as the remaining couple try to destroy Dracula with the help of a vampire killing priest. Good stuff. Lee once again turns in a heavy performance without uttering a word(but hissing and yelling once in a while). Not as good as the first film and Van Helsing's presence is missed, but a very good Hammer flick nonetheless.
Satanic Rites is the last we'd ever see of Lee as Hammer's Dracula. Folks are split on this one. Dracula's still in early 70s London, but it's quite different from Dracula A.D. 1972. No hippy kids, no Stoneground, no "far outs", "groovies", "dig the music kids" or running from the "fuzz". It deals with Dracula(who apparently has been resurrected yet again, but we really don't know how this time) running a big operation that plans on manufacuring a virus that'll bring about a second Black Plague on the earth. Apparently Dracula's tired of his existance and wants to go out with a bang. Guess who's on board to stop him? Van Helsing's back too, and he's gonna save the entire world by whippin' some vampire ass with the help of the police inspector from the previous film as well as his grandaughter(this time played by Joanna Lumley). Satanic Rites has a bit more blood and breasts than the early films. It isn't fantastic, but I certainly wouldn't say it's as bad as some try to make it out to be. It's certainly better than alot of the vampire crap on the new release wall of your local video store, that's for sure. And of course both Lee and Cushing excellent and keep it interesting.
Warning!!!.......2006-05-14
For owners of high-definition televisions, be warned that this is merely presented in widescreen format and NOT anamorphic widescreen format.
Because this is out of print, some private sellers are asking for exorberant amounts for this. Be forewarned. I purchased it from a seller who offered it at a reasonable rate. I'm trying to complete my Hammer Films collection and "Dracula: Prince of Darkness" is a must. (I'm not a big fan of the "Satanic Rites of Dracula," but it's nice to have that, as well.) But I thought it was enhanced for widescreen televisions before I bought it and I was wrong.
I give this four stars because Anchor Bay didn't offer these films in anamorphic widescreen. While that is very disappointing, I'm still happy to own it.
lee returns as the count in "prince" and said goodbye to him in"rites".......2006-04-27
after years of not playing dracula mr lee finaly came back for "prince of darkness" and it is a better film because of it. even though he is off stage most of the time you feel his evil in every frame and this once again has a novel way to kill? our count.
rites is the last hammer dracula movie and isf not for peter cushing returning as van helsing this one wouldn't be as good. lee is good but ouly comes to life(no pun ment) when old friend cushing joins him. a very sad ending to the series.
I Bought this For "Prince of Darkness".......2006-01-02
I'm under the Review "How is this oop" I have finally got one note to "good deal with some flaws" review the print on DPOD is not that bad the widescreen looks the same as my old VHS version and the jumping bit with Diana getting out of the Carriage wasn't bad either or maybe that's not what part your talking about also the 2 world of hammer episodes being the same look at the "Mummy's Shroud/Plague of the Zombies" DVD it's 2 world of hammer episodes are also the same. All I know is that I have finally got "Dracula Prince of Darkness" on a Region 1 DVD
As for "Satanic Rites of Dracula" the only thing I like about that was the print anchor bay used for this edition waaay better than all those cheapo DVDs If your gonna have "Satanic Rites of Dracula" on DVD go for this or if you can find the oop DVD of this version

Although it was initially criticized for spoofing mecha sci-fi adventures and fan culture, Martian Successor Nadesico (1996) became an international hit. Unfortunately, the theatrical film offers little of the original's irreverent humor. Two years after the broadcast series, Yurika and Akito are missing and presumed dead; Ruri now commands the Nadesico B. Ruri was always the beleaguered voice of common sense, noting, "I guess we'll be fumbling about, making noise `til the end. However, when you think about it, that's rather appropriate for us." The new Ruri asks dumb questions: "Are you a good guy or a bad guy?" Fry cook turned mecha pilot Akito appears as a masked, Keanu Reeves-esque figure. ("That was then. This is now.") Fragmented and difficult to follow, Prince of Darkness is a dreary coda to a wonderfully funny series. Where's Gekiganger 3 when we need him? (Rated 15 and older: profanity, brief nudity) --Charles Solomon

they intended well but it skips alot and tries to explain it as you go i was thourly confused. but still gets A 4 DONT SKIP IT!
Flat Story Line.......2006-01-22
This is hardly the film to start an acquaintance with the Nadesico series. Unfortunately, with my knack for getting everything backwards, it's where I began. It took me a while to sort out my confusion about what was happening, and when I finally did I still didn't find the story all that interesting.
This film comes after the original series Akito and Yurika, the original main characters, are gone and presumed dead. In their stead, Hosino Ruri is now the captain, but for the most part the old cast is gone. A series of Hisago Plan space colonies have come under attack and the Class A boson jumpers keep vanishing. The solution - call in the Nadesico B. As you might expect, nothing quite works out as planned.
On top of the competition between space based and earth based forces there are third and fourth interests at work. Once the Nadesico returns to earth after witnessing an attack the decision is made to unleash the experiment Nadesico C. At this point the film falters while Ruri suddenly goes on a hunt for a crew that can be trusted. And finally on to the climactic battle.
While the film is nicely done, it never seems to catch fire, despite its large number of battles. The characters don't seem to gel or develop anything beyond rudimentary relationships. With its large number of new characters, the film even puts off those viewers who are familiar with the original story.
I've survived looking at endings before beginnings before, so my over all dissatisfaction is the this film offers very little story in it's strange combination of violence and cuteness. I never felt the sense of drama that should underlie a story that has Martian rebels destroying who colonies. This is a flat effort. Oh yes, avoid the dubbing at all costs.
What can i say...........2005-09-22
Well I brought this movie having watched the whole series at least twice, and really from the movie i expected a crazy reunion of characters for one final mission, but Ohh no. The writers had to try and be clever and deep. The fact that to two main characters arent in the movie is the first thing the struck me as odd. And secondly the fact that the movie is very dark and sad, which is the exact opposite of the series.
Although the if you are a huge nadesico fan, the first time you watch it it is a great feeling to see all the characters again etc etc. But once you've watched it more than once you start to realise how good they could have made it if they had kept it simple.
Oh well. This movie it good if you like some rough and tumble mecha fights but if your expecting a hour and a half version of the series then be prepared to be disapointed. :)
Oh woe is the Nadesico!.......2005-02-10
I remember watching this whole series and loving nearly every minute of it. I was sad to see it end that way, like with any other series end. I (my brother actually) recently bought the Essential Collection volumes 1 to 3 (whole series, plus cheaper but as my friend says it's like the Greatest Hits of PS2 for ADV).
This movie was like they pulled out of the manga (I'm guessing) chronologically in the manga two years ahead. I was told the Japanese had the manga/novel prior to this movie, having them understand but the majority of us US mainstream fans left in the dark. I rented it, got progessively pissed off not knowing what the hell was going on. Prince of Darkness was and is like a complete stranger to me...kinda like the relationship between Yurika and Akito in begining of the series...as if we only have good memories of the series. I just felt more nostalgic and empty at the end. WHICH PROMPTED ME TO (eventually) BUY THE WHOLE SERIES instead TO GET A FIX like an otaku junkie.
Friends commented it was basically for those Ruri Hoshino fans out there. The only connection I saw between the series and this motion picture is the fact that since Ruri has grown physically (she can't get more mature intellectually than she was in the series) SHE'S ALSO NOW CHASING AKITO. (Maybe not in the sense as Yurika, Megumi, Ryoko, Inez, Erina, etc. but still)
An Unfortunate Ending.......2004-09-18
This movie is interesting, and it reunites us with the characters we came to love from Martian Succesor Nadesico. Unfortunately, while the movie has some intrigue and has visual appeal, it lacks the warm humor that made Nadesico the hit that it was. While there are some light-hearted moments, they seem to have been added almost as afterthoughts. This movie is decidedly darker than the original series, and some of the characters from the original show suffer quite a bit in this incarnation.
In some ways, it almost appears that we were being prepared for a second series that never materialized.

If only this were an Anne Rice fanfic, it could get banned..........2005-09-04
I heard good things about this anime, so I decided, "What the heck?" I'll give it a shot. The first episode or so things are looking good, but as the series progressed I just got slightly annoyed, perturbed, disturbed...and flat out disappointed.
The first thing I noticed was the soundtrack. I didn't know steel mill machinery counted as an instrument. The minute that God-awful sound came blaring from my speakers my fingers instantly lept for the "skip chapter" button. Later at a friend's house I heard the song starting from the middle, and decided it wasn't so bad. Then I heard it the whole way through again - sorry, but I can't stand that noise.
The other thing I noticed was Shiro is not that capable a hero. He is either constantly foiled, made a fool of, or arrives too late to really save the day since lots of innocent people have already died. If he were Sherlock Holmes he would have killed the Hound of the Baskervilles AFTER it killed Sir Henry Baskerville. One villain doesn't even die by Shiro's hands, they die by getting struck by lightning as if God said, "I AM WHO AM...really ticked off you can't even beat one minor villain."
By the way, whoever wrote the script for this anime really, really, really hates kids. I say this because every kid character either dies or goes through some traumatic experience. There's even one episode where a girl gets killed in front of her friends, they walk off the screen sobbing, and we never get a resolution as to what happened.
The unnecessary violence doesn't end there though. There's one odd sequence where a vampire is rampaging through a subway fighting the police. He goes through them like they were all old women with the flu. Shouldn't the police be better prepared? I know what you're thinking: but they don't know about vampires! Normally that explanation would work, but here the anime kills itself. In an earlier scene the female police detective was speaking with a superior who mentions vampires and the problem they cause. If the police know about vampires, then why don't they prepare for it? At least in the later Godzilla films the Japanese military were portrayed to accurately depict a nation that had been attacked by Godzilla a bunch of times. I also have to say I got a good laugh at the scene where Shiro's highschool girl friend get's turned into a vampire. She goes through the movie with a B-cup, but once her shirt and bra are taken off it suddenly morphs to a DD-cup. I don't know any bra that can withstand that much. It's always amusing in animes how the girl's chest will grow five cup sizes when the clothes are taken off. (take a look at Deedlit's sudden implants at the end of the "Lodoss War" OVA)
I spoke with a female friend of mine who was all up about this series. Main reason? Shiro is cute. Oh yeah, and the villain, Kain, is cute as well. You know, even though he's evil, his good looks are a redeeming quality. Why do fangirls do this? They'll make comments about the way a girl looks, or say a guy will only go after a certain type of girl or say a girl looks a certain way just for the men, then they'll base an entire opinion of a show just on physical appeal of a handful of male characters.
I must now get something off my chest that has been lurking inside me for some time. All you fangirls out there drop your yaoi comics and take note:
JUST BECAUSE THE HERO IS CUTE DOES NOT MAKE THE ANIME GOOD!
Did you get that? Good. I don't think that people liked "Lawrence of Arabia" just because girls swooned when Peter O'Toole took his shirt off. And remember: if Hitler had long flowing hair, well-defined cheekbones, a great outfit, and a sexy smile...he'd still be scum.
Wow! This anime series is awesome!.......2005-09-03
Way back when, my friend was telling me about an anime series. "It's pretty cool!" she said, "The main character is a vampire, and he has this cute little fairy partner! It's called Nightwalker!" She didn't give me a very detailed plotline, but she had only seen one or two episodes. Anyway, I forgot about it for a week or so, until one day I saw it and decided to pick it up.
I was not disappointed. I ended up watching the second DVD first by accident, but oh well. I don't know why people keep calling this anime series clichéd...it's not. There are some parts that are, but that didn't really detract from the series. There are a bunch of original things to enjoy as well though. For instance, I thought it was truly unique that the vampires could make weapons out of their own blood. Shido has a sword, and Cain has a whip. Well, actually they can both use either one, but they usually stick to their respective weapons. Also, I like the little detail that their eyes can change gold when they're in full "vampire mode." (No, that's not what they actually call it.)
Another original aspect is the breed. The breed are both similar and different than vampires. A few differences are that the breed don't come with bodies...they have to possess a human. They also feed off of human energy rather than blood. Shido has made it his quest to destroy the breed, even though vampires and the breed are usually comrades. Together with Yayoi, his blood donor and partner, Guni, an urban fairy, and Riho, his young secretary, he sets out to save humans from them.
The best part of the series though, in my opinion, is definitely Cain and his relationship with Shido. Cain is Shido's sire, and he's deeply in love with him, though Shido doesn't return the feelings. His quest in life is to get Shido to return to him. In the second DVD all the characters get remodeled... Cain was rather ugly in the first DVD, but in the second one - wow! He's simply gorgeous.
The opening is one of the coolest openings I've ever seen in any anime so far. The song they play is Gessekai, and it's a beautiful song.
If you're bored of the usual in vampire movies and anime, check this one out. It's definitely refreshing, and the only bad part is that it was too short! It'll leave you wanting more.
Addictive.......2004-04-03
Many many people will tell you that Nightwalker is one of the more clichéd Vampire anime's out there. And it is. All the standard vampire rules apply. If you're buying the second disk, then I'd assume you've seen the first and enjoied it so I don't have to talk you into loving it. In this disk you see more of Shido's past and Riho's new life as a vampire is explored.
I'm not sure about other people's experiences, but I found some of the colouring and a couple of other aspects changed as the series progressed. My other big whinge is that there's not enough of it! I could have very happily watched quite a bit more of this one :)
Excellent Continuation of a Different Kind of Vampire Anime.......2003-04-16
The vampire is certainly a popular figure in anime, spawing films from Vampire Hunter D to series like Vampire Princess Miyu. Though the ideas and stories of NightWalker are not exactly original, the anime OAV (direct to video) series is rather cute and entertaining.
Eternal Darkness is the second DVD (containing episodes 7-12) of the NightWalker OAV series. For readers unfamiliar with the series itself, here are a few quick details:
Private eye Shiro's secret is that he's actually a vampire, but one who has taken on the task of defeating the creatures of darkness in a futile quest to redeem the fall that transformed him to a vampire--viewers may find this similar to television's Forever Knight. Created by a powerful vampire bearing the biblically-suggestive name Kain, Shiro also bears a sprinkling of Anne Rice.
Shiro's partner, paranormal cop Yayoi, offers her own blood to sustain him as the two must defeat the "night breeds" in a series of six related yet distinct episodes. His "kawai" schoolgirl secretary Riho--though not immediately in on the secret--also finds herself caught up in the struggles between good and evil.
In this second DVD, Shiro's sidekick Riho has herself become a vampire. Though Shiro himself did the deed to save her "life" when vampire progenitor Kain had mortally wounded her, Riho now must learn to deal with eternal darkness. The stories do a rather good job of characterizing the difficulties Riho faces adjusting to her new life while remaining true to the spirit of the first six episodes as Shiro & company must battle the evil night breeds.
As before, what really drew me into the series was the characters, as at times the stories themselves are somewhat cliche. When in the final episode Riho apparently has turned to evil and Shiro must confront and likely kill her, you'll sit on the edge of your seat trying to figure out how the characters will possibly recover and return to their (un)lives together.
The English voiceovers are passable, but most anime purists will prefer the Japanese with subtitles option. The special features aren't incredibly detailed but do include scripts, an art gallery, character info, and production data.
I found that the cliches presented did not detract from the overall stories and came to rather enjoy the series as a whole. There may be grittier or more involved vampire anime available, but if you're looking for something different in vampire anime, give NightWalker a try.

Disappointed.......2004-10-22
Ozzy is the best, but whoever put this DVD together needs to find another job. It has no structure whatsoever. I recommend Don't Blame Me which follows Ozzy from his childhood to No More Tears. And MTV recently made a biography on him so if you're a die-hard Ozzy fan then be watching for it to come out on DVD.

Bad Film Makers Trying to Ride Wave of Ozzy Popularity.......2004-01-16
The disclaimer at the beginning of this 'documentary' pretty much says it all (paraphrasing): "There's not a shred of original Ozzy music played in this film, and it isn't endorsed in any way by the Ozzy Camp" (i.e. it sucks). 5 minutes into this film the horrible soundtrack (a $10 drum machine, I think) and the redundant use of still photographs with cheesy "effects" was almost too much to take. This film is a eclectic bag of snippets, poor quality sound bits and bytes from old Ozzy interviews, and "enhanced" photos slapped together by some of the least talented people I can imagine. An obvious ploy to ride the wave of Ozzy popularity to their benefit - don't buy this DVD, they don't deserve the revenue. I'd change my review to no stars if I could, and Ozzy should sue these losers for putting his name on this worthless dribble. Love Ozzy, hated this DVD.
Great DVD.......2003-01-03
Ozzy is one of the funniest figures of Metal music and it was a pleasure to watch and listen to the story about him. Even though the Osbournes are very well known family, it is always good to go back and follow Ozzy's career straight from the beginning as it was shown on this DVD. The DVD is unofficial, but still worth checking out.
limited photos.......2002-12-06
Most of the interviews with Ozzy are done over the phone, while you listen to the interview photo's of Ozzy and other band members flash on the screen. That's where the DVD takes a bad turn, because the same photo's flash over and over. I just feel that there should been more behind the scene's photo's or at least different photo's. Also some of the film footage is shot in black and white out of a car window of passing cars and landscape of England that has nothing to do with Ozzy. Most of the contents are well known facts about Ozzy and his life so for the collecting fan this will be a disapointment, but for a new fan it will help them understand a little of Ozzy's history.

Mixed bag.......2004-04-12
The Thing
Yep we are confronted by a dog-splitting being from the great beyond. Being isolated we must evaluate track and kill this most obviously menacing "Thing". But what, who, and where is it?
In an attempt at graphic surprises we have sacrificed character and mood of the book ("Who Goes There" by John W. Campbell Jr.), and the original movie ("The Thing From Another World.}". Ah you say what if you do not compare? Still it is a sticky blob story that has no personality of its own.
This movie is fun to watch and say "don't look there" but it is far from extraordinary.
They Live
Turns out that some economic entrepreneurs are in the process of exploiting people. (All people. O.K. the world.) They seem to have a different physical appearance than you or I and for the sake of keeping the exploration covert, have electronically masked themselves to appear normal.
All is going well until the presents of this drifter come to LA looking for work. He finds himself in an unbelievable situation. Evidently malcontents have devised a way to spot these interlopers and are threatening exposure. He is skeptical at first then after a bout of fisticuffs will be forced to see the truth. Subsequently he becomes the most radical in a plot to blowup the masking devise and expose this cabal to the world. Will he succeed or are they clever enough to catch him at the last moment? A more sinister thought is will anyone care?
In a world where you can not tell the good buys from the bad without your glasses there is also a quasi love interest between the vigilante and a worker (Meg Foster) at a local TV studio.
Village Of The Damned
This movie which holds it own is a remake of the 1960 film classic which in turn was based on the book "The Midwich Cuckoos" ISBN: 0899683878.
The small town of Midwich one-day falls inexplicably asleep. Many accidents occur due to the sudden narcolepsy, which is exaggerated in John carpenter style. The result is that several of the village females including a virgin is in a motherly way. They all have their bouncing white hair babies the same day and as with the cuckoo eggs, they are too in love to notice the little quirks about having to control or punish everyone. Compound this by other villages that fall to the same fate and you have an epidemic that threatens to wipe out the human race.
What action can be taken? Is it too late? If he/she were your child what would you do?
Good movies, no booklets.......2004-01-23
I just recently bought this collection from a store in Montreal, Canada. On one hand, I'm very pleased to have finally gotten my hands on the out-of-print They Live and Prince Of Darkness. I don't care much for Village Of the Damned, and I already had The Thing. One important side-note: none of the films have booklets! My separate copy of The Thing had a booklet, so this is probably not because the films don't have booklets - simply a cheap way to cut corners on price. So, be advised: no booklets. There. That was the main thing I had to say. Said It. Done. Still, an overall great deal, even though it's missing HALLOWEEN!
Some weak Carpenter and some Great Carpenter- It's all fun!.......2003-10-24
More than likely it'll be fans of John Carpenter taking a look at this set to begin with. The main hook for the fans is that "Prince of Darkness" and "They Live" have been out of
print for a long time. What better way to re-release them than alongside "The Thing" - arguably Carpenter's masterpiece?
I'm also aware that "Village of the Damned" is considered one of the weaker Carpenter movies, but it has its moments and overall, it's fun. The set is also a great price! I look at it this way: Even if you don't like one of the titles as well as the other three (whatever your Carpenter preferences may be), you're basically getting three good to great movies at a low price and a fourth one for free! You can't really go wrong. If you don't like John Carpenter, stay away. If you've seen very little to none of his movies, this is an OK way to get started.
A fantastic collection....almost........2003-10-11
For this to be the ultimate JOHN CARPENTER HORROR COLLECTION, you'd have to replace the insipid VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED with the underrated IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. The other three flicks in this worthy set are sterling examples of CARPENTER's work.
THE THING rocks. A great, slimy alien infestation nightmare of truly eerie proportions with CARPENTER fav KURT RUSSELL taking a flamethrower to his infected bunkmates with gusto. An excellent movie and an even better horror movie.
The ten minute wrestling brawl between KEITH DAVID and RODDY PIPER is just the cherry on top of the THEY LIVE sundae. A superb paranoia sci-fi action flick that has earned its cult status and then some. Not really a horror movie, but great none the less.
PRINCE OF DARKNESS birngs some interesting ideas to the mix; Jesus was an alien, the devil's kid is living in a massive jar of green Gatorade in the basement of an old church, and ALICE COOPER's possesed bum feasting on maggots, to name a few. A creepy movie with lots of chills and some good laughs.
The selections are all from the UNIVERSAL vault so no wonder VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED made the cut (MOUTH OF MADNESS is WARNER BROS.). Not bad for a collector's set, but CARPENTER really deserves a set of all his films on DVD like the KUBRICK one. That would make a prime collective of great DVD's.
