I am both an Anne Rice fan and a fan of vampire/sci-fi stories. I first saw this movie without having read the books. I agree that the stories are very different, but taken separately, QotD is a fantastic movie!! The music simply rocks and the cast worked so well, especially Stuart Townsend. Definitely one of the best vamp movies I've seen! Would definitely recommend this!!

In "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice, "Queen of the Damned" is the sequel to "The Vampire Lestat." In the movies, it's the sequel to "Interview with the Vampire." The problem is, "Interview with the Vampire" is a masterpiece and "Queen of the Damned" is not. It doesn't even work as a sequel, but more of a stand-alone film that went wrong in many places. Replacing Tom Cruise as Lestat is Stuart Townsend, an underrated actor who has both the looks and charisma to play Lestat, but went wrong with his accent. Townsend threw on some fake-sounding Transylvanian accent and it really sounds fake. The long, dramatic pauses between statements doesn't help either. While the film basically picks up right after "Interview," if that film had ended ten minutes before it did. In case you don't recall, Lestat came back from his place of rest at the end of that film...In this film, he's in the cemetery in a sort of coma that he is awakened from by a budding rock group. He joins the band, renaming them The Vampire Lestat, and begins telling the world that vampires do exist...Something a vampire is never supposed to do. As Lestat grows in popularity and the underworld of vampires get angrier, he awakens from the grave Akasha (Aaliyah), the Queen of all vampires. Throw in some concert sequences (with Jonathan Davis of Korn doing the music) and flashy, music video like direction...You have "Queen of the Damned." Take a look at "Interview" for a moment. None of the actors used accents and all were perfect for their roles. I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan, but he captured Lestat so well I don't think many others could do it. Townsend, I believe, could...But he screwed up. Also, "Interview" was soaked in a gothic, moody atmosphere. "Queen of the Damned" has the atmosphere of a straight-to-DVD movie. The fact that it's directed as if it's a music video doesn't help either and caused it to age almost as soon as it was released. "Interview" was a film that was trying to appeal to adults and critics; it worked, it's a great film. "Queen of the Damned" was trying to appeal to young kids who like horror movies and rock music, the MTV generation if you will. It's no wonder the film was #1 at the box office when it was first released and is rarely ever mentioned anymore. It's sad to see real talent like Townsend, Lena Olin, and Aaliyah put on these fake accents and make themselves look like fools. Aaliyah did it and came out with the most dignity though; even those she just kind of belly dances her way through the film. I haven't read the book, but I'm pretty damn sure that not only does this film not work as a movie but it probably doesn't work as a literary adaptation either.

Like many of the reviewers here, I am an Anne Rice fan. However, I knew that there were going to be liberties taken and was comfortable with them. I mean, few of the "Dracula" movies throughout the years have had anything to do with Bram Stoker's novel. All I wanted - and expected - was a flashy, no substance guilty pleasure movie, a la "Dracula 2000." That alone should tell you my expectations.

But QotD failed even as a guilty pleasure. The storyline didn't make a lot of sense when taken on it's own, and the acting was bad to bland. I also take issue with the badly-done look of the vampires. Rice's vampires are supposed to be beautiful, whereas this bunch looked like Eurotrash or people at a Halloween spook house.

However, one good thing about this movie is the music videos for Lestat. SInce the videos are included on the DVD, it earns 1 star.

This movie is one of my favorites. Although at one point it's a little corny, it's overall an awesome movie. It's definitely a plus that Jonathan Davis of Korn does the music. The music is definitely beyond great. I would recommend buying this dvd.

I am both an Anne Rice fan and a fan of vampire/sci-fi stories. I first saw this movie without having read the books. I agree that the stories are very different, but taken separately, QotD is a fantastic movie!! The music simply rocks and the cast worked so well, especially Stuart Townsend. Definitely one of the best vamp movies I've seen! Would definitely recommend this!!

In "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice, "Queen of the Damned" is the sequel to "The Vampire Lestat." In the movies, it's the sequel to "Interview with the Vampire." The problem is, "Interview with the Vampire" is a masterpiece and "Queen of the Damned" is not. It doesn't even work as a sequel, but more of a stand-alone film that went wrong in many places. Replacing Tom Cruise as Lestat is Stuart Townsend, an underrated actor who has both the looks and charisma to play Lestat, but went wrong with his accent. Townsend threw on some fake-sounding Transylvanian accent and it really sounds fake. The long, dramatic pauses between statements doesn't help either. While the film basically picks up right after "Interview," if that film had ended ten minutes before it did. In case you don't recall, Lestat came back from his place of rest at the end of that film...In this film, he's in the cemetery in a sort of coma that he is awakened from by a budding rock group. He joins the band, renaming them The Vampire Lestat, and begins telling the world that vampires do exist...Something a vampire is never supposed to do. As Lestat grows in popularity and the underworld of vampires get angrier, he awakens from the grave Akasha (Aaliyah), the Queen of all vampires. Throw in some concert sequences (with Jonathan Davis of Korn doing the music) and flashy, music video like direction...You have "Queen of the Damned." Take a look at "Interview" for a moment. None of the actors used accents and all were perfect for their roles. I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan, but he captured Lestat so well I don't think many others could do it.     ok interview with a vampire is definitely one of the best vampire movies ever. queen of the damned wasn't so hot. the only good thing about the movie was aaliyah's performance. it's true she certainly did have limitless potential. it was like when she released one in a million. it was a huge step from age ain't nothing but a number and then when "aaliyah" was released it was a huge step from one in a million. she had the same affect on the big screen that she did in music. watching queen of the damned, i couldn't believe that was the same young woman who was in romeo must die. she was a great talent on the brink of superstardom and will be greatly missed.

It's sad to see real talent like Townsend, Lena Olin, and Aaliyah put on these fake accents and make themselves look like fools. Aaliyah did it and came out with the most dignity though; even those she just kind of belly dances her way through the film. I haven't read the book, but I'm pretty damn sure that not only does this film not work as a movie but it probably doesn't work as a literary adaptation either.

    Like many of the reviewers here, I am an Anne Rice fan. However, I knew that there were going to be liberties taken and was comfortable with them. I mean, few of the "Dracula" movies throughout the years have had anything to do with Bram Stoker's novel. All I wanted - and expected - was a flashy, no substance guilty pleasure movie, a la "Dracula 2000." That alone should tell you my expectations.

    But QotD failed even as a guilty pleasure. The storyline didn't make a lot of sense when taken on it's own, and the acting was bad to bland. I also take issue with the badly-done look of the vampires. Rice's vampires are supposed to be beautiful, whereas this bunch looked like Eurotrash or people at a Halloween spook house.

    However, one good thing about this movie is the music videos for Lestat. SInce the videos are included on the DVD, it earns 1 star.

    After many years of sleeping in his coffin, the vampire Lestat awakens only to find that the world has changed and he wants to be a part of it. He gathers a following and becomes a rock star only to find that his music awakens the ancient Queen Akasha and she wants him to become her king. Worth at least a rental!

    This movie is one of my favorites. Although at one point it's a little corny, it's overall an awesome movie. It's definitely a plus that Jonathan Davis of Korn does the music. The music is definitely beyond great. I would recommend buying this dvd.

      I am both an Anne Rice fan and a fan of vampire/sci-fi stories. I first saw this movie without having read the books. I agree that the stories are very different, but taken separately, QotD is a fantastic movie!! The music simply rocks and the cast worked so well, especially Stuart Townsend. Definitely one of the best vamp movies I've seen! Would definitely recommend this!!

      In "The Vampire Chronicles" by Anne Rice, "Queen of the Damned" is the sequel to "The Vampire Lestat." In the movies, it's the sequel to "Interview with the Vampire." The problem is, "Interview with the Vampire" is a masterpiece and "Queen of the Damned" is not. It doesn't even work as a sequel, but more of a stand-alone film that went wrong in many places. Replacing Tom Cruise as Lestat is Stuart Townsend, an underrated actor who has both the looks and charisma to play Lestat, but went wrong with his accent. Townsend threw on some fake-sounding Transylvanian accent and it really sounds fake. The long, dramatic pauses between statements doesn't help either. While the film basically picks up right after "Interview," if that film had ended ten minutes before it did. In case you don't recall, Lestat came back from his place of rest at the end of that film...In this film, he's in the cemetery in a sort of coma that he is awakened from by a budding rock group. He joins the band, renaming them The Vampire Lestat, and begins telling the world that vampires do exist...Something a vampire is never supposed to do. As Lestat grows in popularity and the underworld of vampires get angrier, he awakens from the grave Akasha (Aaliyah), the Queen of all vampires. Throw in some concert sequences (with Jonathan Davis of Korn doing the music) and flashy, music video like direction...You have "Queen of the Damned." Take a look at "Interview" for a moment. None of the actors used accents and all were perfect for their roles. I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan, but he captured Lestat so well I don't think many others could do it. Townsend, I believe, could...But he screwed up. Also, "Interview" was soaked in a gothic, moody atmosphere. "Queen of the Damned" has the atmosphere of a straight-to-DVD movie. The fact that it's directed as if it's a music video doesn't help either and caused it to age almost as soon as it was released. "Interview" was a film that was trying to appeal to adults and critics; it worked, it's a great film. "Queen of the Damned" was trying to appeal to young kids who like horror movies and rock music, the MTV generation if you will. It's no wonder the film was #1 at the box office when it was first released and is rarely ever mentioned anymore.
