Just when you think it's getting silly, Cellular serves up another tantalizing twist. In the time-honored tradition of Sorry, Wrong Number and Wait Until Dark, Kim Basinger is well-cast as a resourceful damsel-in-distress who thwarts her kidnappers by connecting with a n'er-do-well cell-phone user (Chris Evans, later seen in The Fantastic Four) who races against time to rescue her from afar. One good cop (William H. Macy) assembles clues to uncover conspiracy, while first-time writer Chris Morgan and pulp-movie master Larry Cohen (who conceived the plot, similar to his own Phone Booth screenplay) serve up a consistently satisfying string of high-tension surprises. Jason Statham continues to prove his rising-star status as the film's tenacious villain, and director David Ellis (Final Destination 2) takes advantage of his experience as a veteran stunt coordinator and second-unit director, making good use of locations in his native Santa Monica, and wringing credible suspense from a deliriously far-fetched premise. --Jeff ShannonDescription
SUSPENSE IS ON THE LINE! After getting a frantic call on his cell phone from a kidnapped woman, a young man must battle his way through a ruthless world of lies and murder to rescue her. A fast-paced thriller in the vein of Phone Booth and Speed that will keep you riveted with edge-of-your-seat car chase scenes.

By some lucky quirk of fate, Phone Booth landed on Hollywood's A-list, but this thriller should've been a straight-to-video potboiler directed by its screenwriter, veteran schlockmeister Larry Cohen, who's riffing on his own 1976 thriller God Told Me To. Instead it's a pointless reunion for fast-rising star Colin Farrell and his Tigerland director, Joel Schumacher, who employs a multiple-image technique similar to TV's 24 to energize Cohen's pulpy plot about an unseen sniper (maliciously voiced by 24's Kiefer Sutherland) who pins his chosen victim (a philandering celebrity publicist played by Farrell) in a Manhattan phone booth, threatening murder if Farrell doesn't confess his sins (including a potential mistress played by Katie Holmes in a thankless role). In a role originally slated for Jim Carrey, Farrell brings vulnerable intensity to his predicament, but Cohen's irresistible premise is too thin for even 81 brisk minutes, which is how long Schumacher takes to reach his morally repugnant conclusion. --Jeff ShannonDescription
A single phone call can change a man's life or possibly end it. Colin Farrell delivers a captivating, off-the-hook performance as Stu Shepard, a self-centered New York City publicist who suddenly finds himself on the deadly end of a high-powered rifle scope. Adam Sandler takes a shot at critical respectability with Punch-Drunk Love, a movie by director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights, Magnolia). Sandler plays Barry Egan, a lonely small businessman who calls a phone sex line one night, only to find himself the victim of an extortion scheme the next day--the very same day on which he goes out on a date with the woman who may be the love of his life (the utterly delightful Emily Watson). Barry is a lot like Sandler's popular comic characters--socially maladept, prone to violence, always on the brink of embarrassment--but here Sandler plays it real; the result is both off-putting and sympathetic. Anderson's writing skills, unfortunately, are not as strong as his visual sense. Punch-Drunk Love has many strengths (including great supporting actors Philip Seymour Hoffman and Luis Guzmán), but ultimately fizzles out. --Bret FetzerCustomer Reviews:

Hip-hop czar Master P cowrote, executive produced, and stars in I Got the Hook-Up, which is truly one of the more surreal urban comedies ever seen. P plays Black, a small-time hustler who scams a shipment of cell phones. With his partner Blue (A.J. Johnson) and semi-girlfriend Lorraine (Gretchen Palmer), Black snags a bit of cellular service from a large corporation and starts making a bundle from cell-phone sales. Unfortunately, the phones are a bit undependable, and a gangbanger accidentally broadcasts the location of a package of cash over the radio, setting off a treasure hunt. The gangbanger swears vengeance on Black and Blue, the cellular company starts investigating the surge in use, the FBI gets involved--everyone's on the hunt for our heroes. This plot description, however, is much more direct than the way it plays out. I Got the Hook-Up is a bizarre conglomeration of oddball characters and odd, off-the-cuff incidents, such as when a couple of cops get called in for a domestic dispute, only to discover one of the cop's wives, a dwarf, having an affair with a guy in a leather bat suit. Or there's the funeral of a gangster that turns into a brawl; the pleasure palace a TV repairman has in the back of his shop; an FBI interrogation in which the agents tear off Mission: Impossible-style rubber masks--the plot quickly gets lost in the madness. Which is not a bad thing, really. Tall, laconic P and short, excitable Johnson make an appealing Mutt and Jeff comic duo. Featuring cameos by Ice Cube, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and others. --Bret FetzerDescription
This outrageously out-of-control comedy adventure teams chart-busting hip hop sensation Master P with the hilarious A.J. Johnson (B.A.P.S., HOUSE PARTY). They're a pair of small-time hucksters who go mobile -- upwardly mobile -- when they turn a scammed truckload of cellular phones into more money and beautiful, sexy girls than they ever thought possible! But when this booming bootleg business gets its wires crossed, angry customers, mad-as-hell crooks, and the ever-so-clumsy FBI are all out to have these offbeat operators permanently disconnected! Also starring John Witherspoon (SPRUNG, RIDE, BOOMERANG) and Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr. (FRIDAY) ... plus special appearances by Ice Cube and Snoop Doggy Dogg, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and more!Customer Reviews:

This is almost as bad as Manos: the Hands of Fate.......2003-12-16
The plot to "I Got the Hook Up" is actually quiet simple. Two hustlers who run a fencing operation go into the cell phreaking business, only to piss off all the wrong people in the process. Despite the simple premise however, the movie quickly turns into an incoherent series of scenes, which present a story only in theory. I actually wonder if the idea was to film a bunch of random scenes, glue them together, and hope for the best. This is supposed to be a comedy, but there are only a few scenes that are even remotely humerous. There isn't much unintentional humor either.
Whoever pronounced Ed Wood Jr. the worst director ever, has obviously never heard of Michael Martin. Seriously, I've seen Asian films without any dubbing, or subtitles that make more sense than this. Hell, even the Italians circa 1975, made horror movies that were more coherent than this pile of garbage. Do yourself a favor and find some nice paint to watch dry, and stay away from this one.
Watch Senseless, Don't Be a menace to..., Friday instead.......2003-11-02
This is nuthin like "Friday" or the next, "Dont be a menace to South Central", "High School" High or even "Trippin".
AJ Johnson is a really annoying guy, but he's simply a Chris Tucker,Chris Rock wannabe who's not funny at all.
And Master P has got to be the worst rapper to turn actor, yes people even Coolio has shown better acting skills.

Despite an abundance of gaping plot holes, White Noise serves up enough spooky atmosphere to make it worth a look-see for fans of supernatural thrillers. Even when hampered with a shoddy, clumsily written screenplay, Michael Keaton brings professional conviction to his role as a grieving widower who is introduced to the mysterious (and according to paranormal researchers, highly documented) existence of EVP, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon, which allows the dead to communicate (one-way only, it seems) from the great beyond, through images and voices recordable on a variety of electronic media such as VCRs, computers, etc. Seeking contact with his recently deceased wife, Keaton finds dire warnings of evil in the afterlife, with connections (all too convenient) to killings and disappearances in his Vancouver, British Columbia vicinity. British TV director Geoffrey Sax brings slick style to this hokum, and a few moments of genuine eeriness, but you may find yourself giggling too much to appreciate the highlights. --Jeff ShannonCustomer Reviews:

A good Spanish comedy about a struggling actor.......2004-04-27
This is a charming and funny comedy gem from Spainsh director Manual Gómez Pereira. Javier Bardem does a fine job as Victor and really carried the film. I had problems with his character immediately falling for Amanda (played superbly by Aitana Sanchez-Gijon). No build up to the relationship or any understanding why he falls for her. Alastair Mackenzie does a fine job as the American movie director Oswaldo, though much of the English diaolgue (from other characters) is obviously dubbed and sounds very stiff and unnatural.
Overll, it's a fun movie to watch, and I really enjoyed Javier Bardem's performance.
"There are a lot of repressed men--all with phones.".......2003-11-20
Victor (known as Salvador at the Hot Line) picks up a regular male customer known as Bill. Victor also breaks the rules and becomes rather intimately involved with another caller who calls herself Amanda. Suddenly Victor finds himself up to his neck in intrigue--there's a femme fatale, a murder plot, and a multi-million dollar film.
Javier Bardem stars as Victor, and this role was created before Bardem became a recognizable name in Hollywood. Actually, I prefer "Mouth to Mouth" to any other film Bardem has made. He's got great comedic talent, and his facial features naturally lend themselves to being cast as the innocent, guileless fall guy. Several times during "Mouth to Mouth", Victor auditions for roles and comes off very credibly as the nervous wannabe performing an atrocious Broadway number, the foul-mouthed tough guy, and the great Latin Lover. He switches between characters and makes it look easy. When Victor takes his first phone call at the Hot Line he calls on all his acting talent to help him 'save' the call, and the scene is really well done. The culture of the Hot Line office is particularly amusing, and some of the calls are hilarious.
"Mouth to Mouth" almost has the feel of an Almodovar film--but this is mainly due to pacing and the character of Victor's agent, the semi-hysterical and babbling Angela. However, "Mouth to Mouth" is essentially a comedy and verves firmly away from the darker philosophical issues that Almodovar often wrestles with. "Mouth to Mouth" is a great foreign comedy, and I think most people could easily relate to its universal humour-displacedhuman.
Javier Bardem as "Victor" gets into some phone sex........2003-05-18
Delightful, Funny, & Touching Comedy w/typical Spanish humor.......2000-06-08
The plot is to die for. A young, struggling actor, is out job and out of luck, but he needs to go on...So, he begins an adventure that is likely to end with a big mess.
At times, this film feels like a one man show or a stand-up act; nevertheless, absolutely all characters are well-developed and rich: the shady sex-line owner in need of his over-bearing mother's approval, the dancing girl in need of money, the plastic surgeon in need of love, the Hollywood lady producer in need of success, etc. As it is common in Spanish cinema, colors are very important in this film: red and black are the main ones. They symbolize passion, jealousy, crazyness, and sarcasm.
When you start watching this film, you can sit back and enjoy yourselves. By the end, you are likely to re-evaluate your opinions about issues raised. You're also likely to have a blast, in the process.
