Inspired by the controversial E.C. Comics of the 1950s--which also provided the title and inspiration for the popular Tales from the Crypt TV series--director George Romero and screenwriter Stephen King serve up five delightfully frightful stories. Utilizing comic-book panels, animated segues, and exaggerated lighting and camera angles, Romero and cinematographer Michael Gornick come very close to replicating a horror comic in film format. The results mix fine acting with the morbid sense of humor and irony that made the E.C. books so popular in their heyday. Actors such as Leslie Nielsen, Hal Holbrook, Ted Danson, Adrienne Barbeau, Ed Harris, E.G. Marshall, and even King appear in the stories, which include tales of a sinister father's day celebration, a mysterious meteor, seaweed-draped zombies, a monster in a crate, and a cockroach-phobic millionaire. Fiendishly fun fare from one of horror's most famous directors. --Bryan Reesman

GREAT MOVIE WITH A PLAYFULL SPIRIT!!!.......2007-06-09
I have been watching horror movies for a long time, and I remember when this movie was released(my mother took me to the movies to see it; I still don't know whether that was a good or bad thing?!?!). Years had gone by and one day I saw this movie at the video store and just had to have it. This movie is graphic but very playfull(comicbook roots). Ther are five storys: First, A murdered father showing up for Father's Day. Second, A man (Steven King) discovers a meteor(intresting fact, This story is based on H.P.Lovecraft's "The Colour Out Of Space")Third, A man seeking revenge on his wife and lover. Fourth, A janitor and a college proffesor open a crate that the janitor found to a grizzly consequence. Last, and greatest, A hypocondriac in a germ free apartment gets an unwelcome visit by several thousand little unwanted guests. If you like horror comedy then check out this classic. well worth the time.
"Where's my cake!?!"........2007-03-31
This was just a great and fun anthology horror film from George A. Romero, it was also writen by Stephen King so you probably know what to expect when you have these two geniuses of the horror genre together this was deffinetely a high quality film. Creepshow was inspired by the horror comics Tales from the crypt from EC comics which were released during the 50's and were quite unique and a bit controversial during that period, these five tales were quite good and alot of fun to watch especially on halloween but still you could watch them at any time, during the beginning the title sequence is shot like a comic book and has some nice animation and then the live scenes happen where a bratty kid is playing around with his horror comic book then his dad finds out and gets angry and upset and well the story resolves at the end of the film when the boy gets his revenge, the boy was played by Stephen King's son so watch out for some bad acting these stories are not really scary but you wouldn't mind since they're alot of fun to watch anyway here is a short summary of these five stories:-
Father's day involves a family reunion, an ashtray and an unnatural desire for cake. Watch out for Ed Harris's corny dance sequence and the zombie that rises from his grave, very good storyline about revenge and retribution "Where's my cake!?!".
The lonsome death of Jordy Verill features Stephen King as a dorky and dumb farmer who discovers a meteor with all sorts of growth and fungus and decides to touch it, not a good idea since now hes about to turn into a plant. This is one of the worst storylines but the good thing is its short and doesn't take to long, there were some funny parts though.
Something to tide you over tells of Leslie Nielson's interesting plan of vengeance against the man who stole his wife played by Ted Danson. This was a very good and suspensfull storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat as Leslie buries Ted Danson's character in the sand.
The crate was one of my favorites and it has some wonderful special fx done by Tom Savini who made the effects for the monster in the crate that looks like its from another world and is quite creepy, the story is about a college professor who has a very loud and obnoxious wife played by Adrienne Barbeau who keeps embarissing her husband infront of everyone untill an opritunity comes along to get rid of her, this story has alot of twisted dark humor in it and some gore.
They're creeping up on you is about a rich and greedy eccentric executive type who has to deal with a roach problem, this is a very nice storyline that wraps up everything. Overall the film was a classic 80's horror film and is the best George Romero flick since he was more known for his living dead trillogy this film also showed that he could do other things beside that, great stuff and highly recommended. Make sure that you also watch the sequal along with this back to back, the best storyline IMO was The raft where the college kids get eaten by a creature in the lake.
You will have nightmares........2007-03-10
This film is essentially 4 stories woven to create equally frightening tales in true comic book format. Stephen King's brilliance shines in all four tales of murder, tragedy, love, betrayel and desperation. "Father's Day" still gives me the creeps. "Meteor Man" will leave you questioning yourself. "The Sea Lovers" will frighten you. Enjoy.
It's Father's Day..............2007-01-08
I grew up watching this movie whenever and wherever I could. I like to think that the writers of Creepshow educated me in how to handle life's many problems and keep a smile on my face while doing so. I was amazed at how the remains of Nathan Grantham, the murdered patriarch of the Grantham family exacted revenge on his ungrateful family and he even managed to get his Father's Day cake in the end. And for all of you people on the old ball and chain, look at the way in which Henry dealt with Wilma, his horrifying wife. This just goes to show us that sometimes, seeminlgy awful situations can work in our favor.
The most fun you'll ever have being scared!.......2007-01-07
Sometime after doing my review of Creepshow 2 did I realize I didn't review the original. And not wanting to disappoint my (2) fans, I have decide to put the disk back in, and give you my in depth opinion...George A. Romero("Dawn of the Dead"," Day of the Dead"," Martin")after huge success with "Dawn of the Dead" directed his another masterpiece-an anthology of five short stories called "Creepshow". The script was written by Stephen King, and the special effects were made by F/X wizard Tom Savini("Martin","Maniac","The Prowler"). The first story "Father's Day" is so-so-nothing special, but the zombie looks terrific; the second story "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verril" is the funniest, Stephen King steals the show as a Jordy,a goofy farmer, who finds a strange meteor; the third story "Something To Tide You Over" is my favorite-it's ghastly, creepy, funny and a little bit disturbing, again great make-up of the drowned zombies; the fourth story "The Crate" is the longest and goriest-there's a lot of suspense and plenty of gore mixed with black humour. Finally we are getting to the last story "Creeping Up On You"-an enjoyable story about cockroaches with some rather gross special effects. Overall I must say that I love "Creepshow"-surely they don't make them like this anymore. So, check it out! In fact, I will hold my breath as you do. Because I can hold my breath for a long, long time.

What is it about hitchhikers that makes them such a sure-fire bet for horror? This question is addressed in the final segment of Creepshow 2, another Stephen King-George Romero collaboration. "The Hitchhiker" is the simplest and best of the three tales on display here, with Lois Chiles as a cheating wife who just can't seem to get rid of a hitchhiker... no matter how hard she tries. The collection gets off to a slow start with "Old Chief Wood'n Head," a sleepy story of Native American justice. "The Raft" is a passable teens-in-peril number, but it worked better on the page than on screen. Romero adapted the King stories but emphatically did not direct, which accounts for the drop-off from the kicky fun of the first Creepshow. King appears as a dimwitted truck driver--a foreshadowing of Maximum Overdrive? In any case, this one's for diehard fans only. --Robert Horton

CHEAP LOOKING CREEP.......2007-04-12
Not once has anyone ever seen such a collection of low-budget wierdness. You can't blame the actors; they are pretty good. Blame the lame storylines, lousy music, and stupid props.
Just trust me. Not scary, not thrilling, not worth the time. The only thing great here was the cute topless girl, to be honest.
I feel the need, the need... for WEED!.......2007-01-07
The original Creepshow was a landmark in horror film history,(did I review that one yet?) and the second installment only adds to the glory of the first. It had 3 stories instead of 5 like the first one, but that's probably because they are longer tales. When I look back at the history of horror films, this one is always one of the firstor should i say second that I think of. This is a must have for any collector or film lover.
One last thing... Thanks for the ride, lady!
not as good as the orginal, but still good.......2006-11-20
this edition of Creepshow brings another tide of terror and fear to your DVD collection. There are three stories in this film:
1.Old Chief Woodenhead-an old wooden Indian comes to life and gets revenge on a group of hoodlums that murder his creators. An old-fashioned scare-up.
2.The Raft-Five friends go out to a secluded lake for fun,but are soon trapped by a malavolent monster in the lake.
3.The Hitchhiker-A woman is put through a terrible ordeal when a man she runs over keeps coming back to life. Thanks for the ride, lady!
A worthy disk for an under-rated film........2006-07-15
Considering how this seems to be one of the lesser-appreciated films from the 1980s, I find it a pleasent surprise that they would go back and make a special-edition disk with some nice special features, a making-of mini-documentary and a filmmakers commentary, both of which I had a lot of fun watching and listening to. Other lesser-known films from the 1980s that got some really cool special feats on their DVD disks are: CAT'S EYE, CHOPPING MALL, CHEERLEADER CAMP, THE STUFF, DOLLS, SOCIETY, ROCK & RULE, FIRE & ICE and TIME RIDER.
I do have a few disapointments with this movie, both of which have to do with the fact that they were working on a limited budget back when they made this movie. The first is, as most know, the fact that this film has only three tales, while the first had five. The other thing is that the first film had lots of comic book touches throughout, such as pages turning across the screen, narritive captions shown on screen, weird comic book lighting in the backrounds at certain climative parts, even scenes shown in seperate panels at certain moments. Well, this film has none of that, the stories are just shown in the same way you'd show a regular movie.
Still, the stories are great for what they are. I'd say they're as good as the ones shown in the first film, and I'm glad to own this disk. The stories are:
OLD CHEIF WOODENHEAD: Three young punks in a decrepit desert town rob and kill two elderly store owners, only to have their wooden cigar indean come to life and exact revenge. The fact that it's the wooden indean that avenges the couple and not the people themselves who come back from the dead, as would normally be the case in this type of story, earns this tale at least a few originality points.
THE RAFT: Based on an earlier Stephen King story found in the Skeleton Crew short story collection. Four college students spend a day on a raft in the middle of a remote lake, only to find themselves preyed upon by a black blob lurking in the water that likes human flesh and can slip through the cracks between the boards. In my opinion the best of the three.
THE HITCHHIKER: The story that is probably the most like the classic E.C. comic horror tales. A woman driving home late at night accidentally runs over a hitchhiker. Unfortunately for her, the guy comes back and wants revenge, and she can never seem to get away from him no matter how far she drives. It's like this one episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE turned pure horror as opposed to subtle suspense.
If you're a horror fan, check this one out.
should be in your collection, if you call yourself an 80's horror movie fan..........2006-07-06
Creepshow 2 contains-
1.)three cost effective stories, first is mediocre, but the other two are great.
2.)an EXCELLENT animated wraparound featuring the creep, a weird kid, and his run-in with some bullies. reminds you of late eighties saturday morning cartoons. my favorite part of the movie.
3.)cool/cheesy music.
4.) good acting for such a low budget movie.
5.) great locations. really convincing.
you see a desert town, a mountain lake, and the icy highways of Maine.
6.) good monster effects in the raft sequence and a great mutilated corpse in the hitch hiker. They did really well with such a small budget. the oil slick is scary. don't believe what the detractors say.
but....
1.) this deluxe edition's commentary and bonus documentary are lame. I thought they made this movie look bad but....................Creepshow 2 is a great movie. Recommended.

Creepshow 3 revives the venerable horror anthology feature with a quintet of grisly stories aimed at the splatter audience and those who recall the original film (which was helmed by George Romero and written by Stephen King) and its sequel with fondness. Unfortunately, neither Romero nor King are involved with this film, which was written and directed by low-budget filmmakers Anna Clavell and James Glenn Dudelson, whose previous efforts include an in-name-only sequel of Romero's Day of the Dead. Clavell and Dudelson have also jettisoned any connection to '50s horror comics like Tales from the Crypt (which lent the original Creepshow much of its ghoulish style and verve), though there are a few odd moments of CGI animation that serve as framing devices. The stories are suitably bloody--a serial-killer prostitute meets a client with a horrible secret in "Call Girl"; a pair of students takes a hands-on approach to discovering whether their former professor's new bride is human or mechanical in "The Professor's Wife"; and a new TV remote wreaks havoc on the mind and body of a bratty schoolgirl in "Alice"--but lack any sense of suspense or, in several cases, coherence (the black humor of the '50s comics is sorely missed too). And with no real name actors on hand (save Eileen Dietz, the face of Pazuzu from The Exorcist), flat, unimpressive direction, and hit-and-miss special effects, it's difficult to imagine horror fans flocking to Creepshow 3 like they did to its predecessors. -- Paul Gaita
Description
This third installment in the George Romero/Stephen King-launched anthology series features five new tales of horror and a wraparound. The main stories deal with alternative realities ("Alice"), possessed communication devices ("The Radio"), vampires and serial killers in lust ("Call Girl"), mad inventors ("The Professor's Wife"), and hauntings from beyond ("Haunted Dog").

Not the same old Creepshow..........2007-07-05
Loved it. Maybe not for everyone but was definately different. Give it a chance. It is one of those movies that you have to watch a couple times to take it all in.
Unimaginably bad.......2007-07-01
The original Creepshow was a surprise smash thanks to the teaming of legendary horror director George Romero and author Stephen King. Naturally, it spawned a sequel that ultimately failed to live up to the original, but it was nowhere near as bad as what we have here. Creepshow 3 is the third entry in the series in name only, as it is brought to us by the same crew that brought us the direct to DVD Day of the Dead 2: Contagium. Reading the previous sentence alone will tell you everything you need to know about Creepshow 3 in regards to checking it out, which if you were lucky enough not to see Day of the Dead 2, you should avoid this as well. The only thing Creepshow 3 really has in common with the previous films are by featuring multiple stories that get tied together, along with some lame CGI-rendered comic book style frames here and there as well. The acting throughout is horrible beyond belief, and saying that the stories themselves are lame is saying it lightly. The gore effects stink, and the tepid, uninspired direction makes a guy like Uwe Boll look like Martin Scorsese. Yes, it's that bad, and like Day of the Dead 2 before it, it's completely unnecessary as well. I enjoy horror anthologies as much as the next horror fan, so let's hope the next time someone wants to make one that they have some kind of talent, and don't torture us with crud like this. Avoid.
TRASH IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD!.......2007-06-30
CREEPSHOW 3 IS A DISGRACE TO THE OTHER TWO INSTALLMENTS IN THE SERIES!
THIS IS NOT A CREEPSHOW...BUT A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME!
Creepshow?.......2007-06-27
This movie, creepshow 3, in NO WAY upholds the Creepshow franchise. It might actually be a good purchase, if it had a different name, on a F grade horror comedy dollar rack. It really feels like they just pasted this movie together in a few days. Very little about the stories makes any sense. Loads of uneventful situations and dialogue. There is maybe ten minutes of total film where ANYTHING is happening worth seeing. Some funny things, some well done special effects and makeup. Not worth any more than a few bucks. You should not be in any hurry to see this film. You are NOT missing out. It's a tragic addition to the Creepshow films. Please wait to buy it until it reaches below five or so dollars. People who make movies like this, and tag a name like Creepshow on it, should NOT be allowed cameras. Creepshow Creepshow 2 Creepshow 2 (Divimax Edition)
Classic B Horror.......2007-06-27
What an adorable mad professor. He made the show! Hope to see more of him in scary movies - you have to love the way he innocently deals with his rabbit, his bride, his vodoo kit!

Customer Reviews:

Children of the Corn
The murder rate is as high as an elephant's eye in this flaccid adaptation of Stephen King's short story. While driving through Nebraska en route to a new job, medico Burt (Peter Horton) and his wife Vicky (a pre-Terminator Linda Hamilton) nearly run over a mutilated boy who staggers from the cornfields. Seeking help, they enter the town of Gatlin, whose under-20 residents have butchered their parents per the decree of junior-grade holy roller Isaac (John Franklin), who preaches the word of a being called "He Who Walks Behind the Rows." King's original story (from his 1978 collection Night Shift) was a lean and brutal mélange of Southern-gothic atmosphere and E.C. Comics-style gore, which scripter Greg Goldsmith effectively neutralizes by adding a youthful narrator (a grating Robbie Kiger) and putting an upbeat spin on the story's morbid conclusion. Fritz Kiersch's direction is TV-movie flat, with the sole inspired moment (hideous religious iconography glimpsed during a bloody "service") delivered as a throwaway. Aside from Horton and Courtney Gains (as Isaac's hatchet man Malachai), the performances are dreadful, and the depiction of the Lovecraftian monster-god as a sort of giant gopher inspires more laughter than terror. Amazingly, the film spawned six sequels; Franklin (Cousin Itt in the Addams Family films) later appeared in and wrote 1999's Children of the Corn 666. --Paul Gaita
Creepshow 2
What is it about hitchhikers that makes them such a sure-fire bet for horror? This question is addressed in the final segment of Creepshow 2, another Stephen King-George Romero collaboration. "The Hitchhiker" is the simplest and best of the three tales on display here, with Lois Chiles as a cheating wife who just can't seem to get rid of a hitchhiker... no matter how hard she tries. The collection gets off to a slow start with "Old Chief Wood'n Head," a sleepy story of Native American justice.
Maximum Overdrive
"I'm gonna scare the hell out of you," intones Stephen King in the trailer for his sole directorial effort, the much-maligned Maximum Overdrive. While the end result doesn't live up to that boast, this sci-fi/horror tale isn't as awful as it's been described. King's script (based on his short story "Trucks") focuses on the patrons of a North Carolina truck stop, which comes under attack by a convoy of trucks and other machines animated by Earth's passage through the tail of a "rogue comet." King's fans, tired of half-baked screen adaptations like Cujo and Children of the Corn, expected a horror home run from Maximum Overdrive and instead got an old-fashioned drive-in movie filled with car crashes, cheapjack gore, and fart jokes. While the film is torpidly paced and often amateurishly acted, it's no worse than any direct-to-video thriller, and King's ear for dialogue occasionally shines through the gloom. Emilio Estevez and Pat Hingle register as a heroic cook and his black-hearted boss, respectively; the cast includes Yeardley Smith (Lisa Simpson's voice), Giancarlo Esposito, and Marla Maples (!) as a victim. --Paul Gaita
Customer Reviews:
Awesome box set!.......2004-03-17
I bought this movie for creepshow 2, but when i watched that i was a bit dissapointed, but it was still way good! but when i watched the other two i was suprised how good they where! maximum overdrive was funny as hell and children of the corn was scary as hell! and creepshow 2 was ok! if you love horror and stephen king, then buy this box set! it is definatly worth you money!
King is long winded and these movies rock.......2003-05-08
I noticed people on here are giving these movies bad reviews because they say these are not up to kings books. well king is long winded, and reading one of his books can just about be a waist of time. "IT" was over 3000 pages, or was it 4000, cannot remember, but it was ridiculous. Horror was never meant to be boring! Maximum Overdrive is definitely a dated movie (smells of the 80's) but it was funny and bloody, and had a great sound track, lots of action!! SO did creep show, and children. I noticed the other reviewers also mentioned liking king movies I would consider being slow. I donýt think they like gore, they want a bunch of story line. Bring on the action baby. BTW - I love king, donýt get me wrong, and feel free to read his books, I have read some myself. I'm just saying I'd rather see the movies. Oh and for the record, to everyone who bad mouthed maximum overdrive: i could be way mistaken, but I think mr. King had the most involvement in the making of that movie then he did with any of the others. All his other movies (especially now days) are wrote by other people, and are their interpretations of his work, not his own.
...
Scraping the bottom of the barrel for horror fans........2003-04-19
Stephen King book to film adaptions are a bit like picking through a barrel of apples: some are good (Misery, The Shining, and Dolores Claiborne), and some are not so good (Pet Sematary, It, and The Stand). This collection leans more towards the latter with 3 mediocre-at-best movies with few frills.
Two of the movies included here are beyond abysmal, "Creepshow 2" and "Maximum Overdrive". "Creepshow 2" contains none of the wit, stlye, or camp of the original movie. All it gives us is [weak] storytelling, lousy acting, and few points of interest. "Maximum Overdrive" fairs somewhat worse, with machines coming to life and killing people. More inexplicable is the fact that Stephen King directed this movie, and did it with seemengly no attention to style or cohesive storytelling. These two movies are pretty much the bottom of the barrel for Stephen King enthusiasts.
The only redeeming feature of this collection is the campy "Children of the Corn", which is by no measure an excellent movie, but it has it's moments. When I was yonger, this movie was a favorite. I would watch it once in a while for camp value, but nothing more.
The fact that this DVD collection is a bargain-bin filler probably explains why there are no extras, outside of the trailers included on a few of the discs. Fans hoping for a more complete retrospective of King's movies will be sorely disappointed by the lack of extras, if they are not already let down by the movies themselves. Overall, there is little to recommend this set on. Save your money.
OK collection.......2003-04-11
well, i got this set about 2 weeks ago in the store. i hadnt watched creepshow or children of the corn in awhile so i figured i would get it. the creepshow dvd is pretty cool and is worth the money and the children of the corn isnt a great movie but its a classic and is one of those movies that isnt really scary but theres somthing about it that just makes it unique and a classic. the only scary part in that movie is when the people in the diner get posioned and another part from the diner im not gona say here in case you havnt seen it yet but the last dvd (( maximum overdrive)) .... the machines and trucks go haywire and attack the people by some unknown unseen force or somthing. the concept is good and the story but the acting and the movie is .... if your a hardcore stephen king fan get this collection or just get the 8 dvd collection from stephen king or buy only one disc, id skip this if your not really a huge stephen king fan but its a ok compilation.

Customer Reviews:
Decent movie, awful DVD quality.......2004-08-04
Please note: the 1-star rating I gave to this film is based on the actual DVD product, not the movie itself.
Released by Top Ten New Media Production Limited, this DVD is your typical cheapo bargain bin atrocity. Do NOT confuse this with the Anchor Bay release, which I haven't yet watched but is most definitely of better quality. And as I'm writing this review, AB is planning a special edition release to come out in the Fall (along with CHILDREN OF THE CORN).
The image quality of this DVD is God-awful; even worse than the VHS or TV prints I've seen. Everything looks foggy, blurry or scratchy, and to make matters even worse, it's PAN and SCANNED. There are 4 chapter stops and no extras. Face it, you KNOW a DVD is of poor quality when it spells "Start Movie" "Strat Movie" on the menu screen. Skip this and wait for the special edition release.
As for the film itself, it's OK. It's a really uneven film and doesn't feel anything like the original. It's not funny, not scary and, frankly, kind of boring. That said and done, I think it's better to grade each segment seperately.
"Old Chief Wood'n Head"
This is the middling segment of the 3. The first half is really boring, but once the Indian statue starts stalking, it picks up a bit.
"The Raft"
Easily the best of the stories. It's quite gory and nasty and is the only tale that comes close to capturing the essence of the EC comic books it's based on.
"The Hitchhiker"
Maybe it was because it was late at night but this segment almost put me to sleep. Lois Chiles was fun but it had no meat whatsoever, just her being terrorized over and over again.
All in all, skip this trashy release and go for the Anchor Bay DVD. It's a decent movie that I recommend only to those who like B horror flicks from the 80's.
