Laughs and jumps all the way through!.......2007-05-03
This is a seriously fun film. Yes it has bad acting and a silly storyline, but the film is still a lot of fun. I remember watching this a few times as a kid when it came out and being intrigued by how weird it was. Now as an adult I still have a smile on my face as the crazy mom and dad run through the house trying to catch this kid. There are a few good laughs and a few jumps to be had. This movie won't be for everyone, but any fan of horror should check it out!
The People Under The Stairs.......2007-01-12
I have always liked this movie. Along with the horror, there's some comedy thrown in.
One Of My Guilty Pleasures: A Fun Watch!.......2006-10-15
There are many reasons I like this film. For one, Everett McGill as the owner of the home the film takes place in, and his gold hoarding mentality make this a funny film. The film is not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, however, this is one of those guilty pleasures of a film that we all have. [At least I do]. No matter how silly or inane a film can be, sometimes we find ourselves liking a film many others dislike. And that's okay. There are just those unknown reasons that do not need justification. I happened to like the film, and while it is not a horror film, it sure pulls it off as a funny film; with a dysfunctional brother and sister: Short of a few brain cells.
One of the major appeals this film has for me, deals with my childhood. My grandmother owned a home just like this is Santa Monica, California. When I was a child and young teen; I along with my older brothers and sisters would visit my grandmother quite often. And the house in the film was exactly like the one my grandmother lived in. The space between the walls, just like the film, were accessible through vents near the floor, and secret passages in the closets. The house was three stories high, and filled with every childs imagination. Hours were spent playing in the hidden recess's between the walls. We could be lost from each other for hours --literally.
Another one of the delights in this huge house, built in the late 19th century, was on the third floor. On the wall at the end of the long hall was a boar's head and a wolf's head mounted on the end of the hall. Both were ferocious looking; and when I asked my mother about this one time, she told me that when my grandparents bought the home in the 1930's, and that the wolf head and boar head's were already there. And since my uncle's liked them as young teenagers, they just stayed there. My grandmother never liked them, but she usually never went on the 3rd floor. In my imagination, I always thought of them coming alive at night. Sort of a dare between my cousins and brothers when we were young. Anyway, that is one of the reason I liked the film so much. However, the film is funny and is an enjoyable watch. Give it a chance, and I am sure you will like it. Recommended.
I don't want to see another cop or cookie in my life. I don't know which one makes me sicker........2006-07-22
Wes Craven's People Under the Stairs is his best film after A Nightmare on Elm Street in my opinion. Enough has been written about the plot on here, but I will say that it's a great horror/suspense flick with some humor thrown in (think Sleepaway Camp 2 & 3) and the performances are all top-notch for what it is. The Man and Woman (who Wes Craven both casted after seeing them in the TV series Twin Peaks according to IMDB) go all out in their roles and did a fine darn job! It's basically a fun thrill-ride where the majority takes place in a huge house of trap doors and mazes. This film should be in any true horror fans collection! Check it out!
A great Horror Comedy!!.......2006-07-08
Anyone that gives this a bad reveiw because of the lack of horror really needs to go get a sense of humor!! The people under the stairs is the kind of movie you watch when you just dont want to do any deep thinking its fun and relaxing. I thought when I first started watching it on tv one night that it would be the typical wes craven scare fest but ten minutes into it I was laughing out loud. Its really worth atleast renting if not buying!

Master of horror Wes Craven directs this exciting visual treat which introduces a diabolical mass murderer who harnesses electricity for unimaginable killing powers. About to be electrocuted for a catalog of heinous crimes, the unrepentant Horace Pinker (Mitch Pileggi) transforms into a terrifying energy source. Only young athlete Jonathan Parker (Peter Berg), with an uncanny connection to Pinker through bizarre dreams, can fight the powerful demon. The two dive in and out of television programs, chasing each other from channel to channel through stunning scenes of disaster, game shows and old reruns. A blend of dazzling special effects, jolting humor and an electrifying soundtrack, Shocker is an ironic tale of terror and madness in the video age.

great box set.......2005-02-26
a great box set
great premise to a great terrifing creator of amazing books ever read or made
People under the stairs: sick, funny, amusing, twisted, moving
the Serpent and the rainbow: sick twisted, funny, amazing, powerful, learn new insights
Shocker: funny at times, twisted, sick, powerful, moving, strange
all 3 movies have been seen at least 4 times each in my player and will be seen more
one offers psycho neighbors who butcher to feast with their crazy cruel dog
one offers complete lunacy into the world of voodoo and how far you really go into it when you want to get out
and the last offers trying to escape a supposedly dead convict who wants revenge for being fried but won't exactly get his way always
all 3 are shocking
and all 3 are deserving to be seen
Decent set, but devoid of extras.......2004-02-07
Collecting three films from horror maestro Wes Craven's Universal deal, this Wes Craven collection features Shocker, The People Under the Stairs, and The Serpent & The Rainbow. Shocker is a fun and over the top romp featuring The X-Files' Mitch Pileggi as a death row inmate whom acquires the ability to jump from person to person inhabiting their body. The People Under the Stairs finds Craven trying to rekindle a bit of the rawness of his earlier more barbaric films Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes with a story involving two kids trapped in a house with a cannibalistic couple and an even creepier secret. The Serpent & The Rainbow finds Craven adapting the best selling book and tells the story of a researcher (Bill Pullman) looking to find the secrets of voodoo and ending up way, way over his head. The only extras to be found are for Shocker which features a trailer and a few production notes, other than that there is nothing. You'd figure for a box set there would be some exclusive extras thrown in or maybe even a commentary or two, but alas, there is nothing. All in all, The Wes Craven Collection is worth buying if your a hardcore Craven fan and don't already own all three films, but otherwise this is rental material.
