Steven Spielberg's first feature film, 1971's Duel, is set on a desert highway. It stars Dennis Weaver as a driver being pursued by a menacing truck, which is following him with all the vengeance of the ancient furies. In this spiritual update from 1984, C. Thomas Howell plays a guy taking a drive-away car from Chicago to San Diego. On a whim, in the rain, and against his better judgment, he picks up a hitchhiker (Rutger Hauer). The hitcher quickly admits to being a murdering psychopath, and once Howell finally gets him out of his car, he is pursued with all the vengeance of the ancient furies. We're never sure if the hitcher is a figment of his imagination, making Howell a schizophrenic killer, or if he's real and Howell is the random victim of a wandering madman, which is how his potential new girlfriend (Jennifer Jason Leigh) thinks of him. Either way, The Hitcher is great fun, kinda scary, and teetering on the brink of "must see." --Andy Spletzer

20 years is a long time in the lifeline of movie plot-arc necessities. It's also a pretty big generational stretch in the lives of audience demographics, which may be part of the reason the producers of this remake of the 1986 cult horror classic felt the need to update the original spare mano-a-mano backbone into a girl-and-mano-a-mano. The Twilight Zone-ish setup is still a pretty neat idea: regular guy on a lonely highway picks up a hitchhiker who turns out to be a psychopathic killer with some very unsettling supernatural might. Fans of the original could hardly hope for a demon villain with such creepy charisma as Rutger Hauer. But Sean Bean makes a respectable replacement, with his understated stare and stewing rage that brings a new brand of hair-raising devilry to the role of hitcher John Ryder. The lone "good guy" originated by a boyish C. Thomas Howell has been upgraded to a lovesick couple. In a twisty touch, Jim (Zachary Knighton, sorta unknown) and Grace (Sophia Bush, of One Tree Hill fame) trade gender roles, with Jim turning wimpy and feminine and Grace becoming a shotgun-toting testoster-ette. The body count's a little higher and the gore factor increased by the power of 20 (years), but some of the original film's set pieces remain much the same-- body-snapping case in point being an 18-wheeler being put to use as a old-fashioned torture rack. While the original might have placed a bit more emphasis on the philosophical and existential elements of evil passing from soul to soul, it wasn't exactly an intellectual thrill ride. Likewise, 2007's The Hitcher is no art film, and it can't be faulted for choosing fright and might for audiences that are always looking for bigger and more elaborate splats for their horror entertainment buck. And if you stick out your thumb for this one, expect plenty of splat. --Ted Fry

4 out of 5 stars A Hundred Times Better Than The Original.......2007-06-28

I saw the original years ago.
I wasn't impressed with it then,
sure Rutger Hauer was creepy,
but you could see him being crazy a thousand miles away, so it didn't catch you off-guard.
Naturally,
when the remake released I was apprehensive about picking it up.
I mean why remake a movie that wasn't that good to begin with.
The answer; to make it a hundred times better.
The much needed injection of action
puts the proverbial petal to the metal.
This flicks got more thrills, action, and blood than the original;
It's superior to it in every way.
Once the movie starts,(and it wastes no time doing that),
it doesn't let up until the credits roll.
This is the flick the term "Thrill ride" was invented for.
Character development, plot, purpose, and the law of physics
are tossed to the wind, in exchange for good fun ride.
(Half the time I was like "No Way!" & "This guy is unstoppable")
He is an enigma alright, and he will hunt you down, regardless.

Thrill after non-stop thrill,
will not only put you on the edge of you seat,
but will make you fall flat on your face,
so enjoy the ride to the carpet.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
Keep your eyes on the road, and break for no one.

2 out of 5 stars Not a hitcher to pick up.......2007-06-26

once upon a time not so long ago, Hollywood execs gave the thumbs up to remake the classic mo vie Psycho. Since then, every classic horror movie has been fair game for new producers, directors and writers to have their way with. And thats where the pointless remake of The Hitcher comes in. As has been mentioned by countless other reviewers, Sean Bean in the place of Rutger Hauer is a noted loss, however the real issue with the remake is the changed storyline which is more of a blending of the original Hitcher and its direct to DVD sequel than anything new. The problem is that by making it a duo of good against a single evil, the tension is all but gone. The effects are very good, the chase is ok, but all in all even if you stop comparing the film to the original, the remake comes up one dimensionally flat. If you want a proper modern take on the premise of The Hitcher, see Highwaymen with Jim Caviezel. The story is compelling, the characters interesting and the whole thing comes off far better than even the few best elements of the Hitcher remake.

1 out of 5 stars How bad is it?.......2007-06-23

Pretty bad. The original was a great film. This one was so stupid. An example is when the two kids instead of explaining who the real killer is they decide to steal a cop car and drive off. The Born Again Christian family who gets knifed to death is an interesting add in. Not sure what the Hollywood director was trying to do there. All in all save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Intense Thriller.......2007-06-23

This is one of the better thriller movies I have seen. The mix of suspense and violence is just right and will keep you watching until the end.

4 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be.......2007-06-19

THE HITCHER is actually a pretty good remake, and a pretty good thriller. I think we all know the premise: a young couple meets a hitchiker who ends up being a murderer. It's more than that though.. you get to care about the characeters, and you get to know them.
The two stand outs are clearly SEAN BEAN and SOPHIA BUSH. They both do a wonderful job. Sean Bean is just creepy as hell in this.. he will really scare the hell outta you. Sophia Bush shows that she can do more than One Tree Hill and teen drama's.. she is a good actress in this.
Have fun with the movie. Don't expect a masterpiece, but it certainly is good. Don't write it off because you don't like remakes.

4 out of 5 stars Pick Up This Hitcher.......2007-06-18

If you're going to pick up a Hitcher, be sure that it's this original from 1986.

In 1981, Rutger Hauer made his American film debut as diabolical terrorist "Wulfgar" in Nighthawks Nighthawks . 5 years later he appeared in the original The Hitcher in the role of John Ryder, one of the most ruthless serial psycho killers ever to be born on the big screen.

The 1986 version had a very 80s feel to it then, and re-watching it this past weekend, I can say that it is indeed very 80s. But it's very well done. There are some over-the-top stunts that would have killed any ordinary serial killer. But that was part of the mystique of John Ryder. Was he human? Was he a monster? Was he the Devil?

The Hitcher's director in 1986 was Robert Harmon, who pretty much tuned to TV after The Hitcher, which is probably a good thing because the "TV camp" definitely came through in a lot of his original version of The Hitcher, but overall it was exciting and unforgettable.

Fast Forward 21 years and music video Director Dave Meyers re-does 1986's The Hitcher with an all new cast and a few minor story changes The Hitcher (Widescreen Edition) . Yes...I said "re-does" as opposed to "re-makes". A re-make is when a director takes an old film, sometimes even a classic, and makes it better. A re-do is when a director takes a film and adds nothing to the original (and in most cases makes it worse). The 2007 version of The Hitcher is a re-do.

While the 2007 version definitely does take the 80s feel out of the original, it also takes a lot out of the fiendish, classic villain that was created by Rutger Hauer. Sean Bean is in the role of John Ryder in the 2007 version. Yes, Bean has played his share of villains, so he had no problem as a bad guy in The Hitcher 2007, but it was like taking Robert Englund out of Freddy Krueger...it just wasn't the same.

Look, I'm not a big preservationist that thinks remaking good original movies should be taboo. I just think that a re-make should indeed be that...a re-make...not a re-do.

So regardless of what your Mom has told you....You can indeed pick up a Hitcher; just make sure that it's the original.

5 out of 5 stars Action Packed.......2007-06-08

this is a very good movie, i wonder what the remake's like. i thought this was an intenes movie, you never know what would happen next. this is a must see.

5 out of 5 stars Rutger Hauer can do it all.......2007-06-02

This movie is a tell-tale sign of Rutger Hauer's acting abilities. At this time he was making a killing in the movie, he was giving us a mysterious character which we know nothing about. Even so, the viewer is scared of him. This movie made people quit picking up Hitchhikers, because this could really happen. It even spawned a TV series named after it and a ton of other Hitcher style movies. If you haven't seen it, watch it before you see the remake, this one blows the new one out of the water.

2 out of 5 stars Gripping...yet really, really long.......2007-06-01

Hitcher takes a great story and turns it into an unbelievable, frustrating mess. Murphy's Law is definitely the premise of this movie. It becomes so frustrating watching everything go wrong. The problem with the movie is one that is just so unbelievable. I have this problem with a lot of movies but this one just takes it so far that it totally ruins it for me. The killer manages to be everywhere with little explanation of how he got there. Not only that, but he seems to be able to move and kill silently without anyone noticing until an opportune moment when he suddenly appears. The only good thing about this movie is Rutger Hauer who plays his part perfectly. And it is occasionally suspenseful when you're not too busy laughing at it.

5 out of 5 stars Jennifer Jason Leigh Taffy-Pull..........2007-05-21

Jim Halsey (C. Thomas Howell) is a normal guy, just trying to stay awake behind the wheel of his car (well, it's not really his, but he's delivering it from Chicago to San Diego). After a near-death experience w/ an oncoming semi, he decides to pick up a hitch-hiker named John Ryder (the incredible Rutger Hauer). Ryder soon reveals himself to be a psychopathic serial-killer, intent on adding Jim to his long list of victims. Jim manages to escape Ryder's clutches, only to trigger an insane game of cat and mouse, psycho-style! Halsey must try and survive Ryder's vengeance, while eluding the police. With the help of a girl named Nash (SWF's Jennifer Jason Leigh), Halsey stumbles into one horror after another! The movie's multiple climaxes had me chewing my nails 'til my fingers bled! Hauer's John Ryder is pure evil, even scarier than his sociopathic replicant character in BLADERUNNER! A classic villain! Highly recommended...

when the remake released I was apprehensive about picking it up.
I mean why remake a movie that wasn't that good to begin with.
The answer; to make it a hundred times better.
The much needed injection of action
puts the proverbial petal to the metal.
This flicks got more thrills, action, and blood than the original;

Jake Busey steps into Rutger Hauer's cowboy boots to remind viewers about the dangers of picking up hitchhikers in this sequel to the 1986 thriller. Though suggested, it's unclear whether Busey's black-clad hitcher is actually supposed to be Hauer, who blackmailed teen driver Jim (C. Thomas Howell) for a series of killing 17 years earlier, but he makes life miserable all the same for the grown Jim (Howell again), now an trauma-plagued cop, and his girlfriend (Kari Wuhrer) as they drive through Texas (played here by Canada, and well photographed by George Mooradian). But where the original Hitcher was a taut exercise in suspense, executive producer Charles Meeker's script is simply a retread of its predecessor's highlights, including the infamous "drawn and quartered" scene, and gives the three leads little to do. Busey tries hard, but lacks Hauer's formidable presence, which may disappoint fans of the original; undemanding frightfest aficionados might enjoy this best. --Paul Gaita

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining!.......2007-03-22

I seen this movie on USA network the other day. I haven't seen the first one but I enjoyed this one. It wasn't right that the guy from the first one died though. Jake Busey has skills like his dad. It shows in this movie. He is a freaky psycho in this movie! It is quite frightening! The movie is very entertaining, but every time the girl finds a way to stop the psycho, he blames everything on the girl or he always finds a way to get out of trouble. That's the only bad thing. Otherwise, buy it! I plan to! I gave it 3 stars because it is not a 4 star movie. It really is a 3 and a half. Don't listen to the bad reviews. You'll love it.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Thriller............2006-03-03

As a fan of The Hitcher, I was curious to see The Hitcher II. I was not disappointed. Although not quite as good as the first Hitcher, I found this movie thrilling and suspenseful for not being a horror movie. C. Thomas Howell returns in this sequel as Jim Halsey who survived the crazed Hitcher of the first movie. His girlfriend in the movie, Maggie ( played by the very pretty Kari Wuhrer ) is a tough cookie and delivers a great performance for she is a survivor!! Jim decides to take Maggie back to Texas where his original nightmare began years ago. They come across a hitchhiker who Maggie wants to pick up. After being a victim of the first hitchhiker, Jim does not want to pick up any more hitchhikers but gets talked into it by his girlfriend. The new crazed hitcher is named Jack ( played by Jake Busey ). Busey also delivers a good performance as a crazed man. Their journey turns into a nightmare when they realize they have picked up a psychopath. From then on, the film has many twists and surprises. I found it was entertaining from beginning to end. There is strong violence in this movie but it's not your basic gore movie. I really liked this movie and don't regret buying it. If you like thrillers, this is a movie for you. I don't quite understand the bad reviews about this movie. I'd suggest renting it and decide for yourself. I think most people will like it.

2 out of 5 stars SEQUEL?.......2005-11-27

Face it people, this is not T2 or The Godfather Part II, and why is there a sequel to the hitcher anyway? The first "The Hitcher" was a classic movie which was a perfect reimagining of Steven Speilberg's classic DUEL. There was no need for a sequel. The story was told, nothing more to tell. A sequel? Dragonheart fell victim for this. A sequel will just tell the story all over again. Not even C. Thomas Howell could save this movie from being a failure. All in all, not entertaining and unnecessary. Not recomended.

3 out of 5 stars Not Quite as Good as the Original.......2005-11-18

C. Thomas Howell reprises his role as Jim Halsey in this sequel to the original "Hitcher". Still haunted by earlier events, Jim and his girlfriend Maggie (Kari Wuhrer) decide to confront his demons once and for all. After being relieved of his duties as a police officer for using excessive force in breaking up a child abduction, Jim calls his friend Captain Ethridge, who helped him out earlier. The Captain convinces Jim and Maggie to come back to Texas so Jim can confront his feelings and erase his anxieties. Jim has never told his secret to Maggie, so she doesn't know why he keeps having flashbacks and is acting so strangely.

However, upon reaching their destination, the same sequence of events starts all over again, as Maggie forcefully convinces Jim to pick up a hitchhiker along the same strech of roadway that Jim had travelled 15 years earlier. The apparent survivor of an accident, Jack (Jake Busey) thumbs a ride from Jim and Maggie. Unknown to them at the time, Jake is the one who caused the accident. Soon, Jim and Maggie are fighting for their lives against another psychotic hitchhiker. Who will survive?

I thought the first movie was better than this one. I do think that C. Thomas Howell, Jake Busey, and Kari Wuhrer do good jobs in their roles, but the story is all too predictable (although there are some unexpected happenings). Even the scene with the victim tied between the truck and trailer is revised from the first movie. There's not much originality in this film, either. It relies too much on the first movie. I did like the flashbacks to the first film, though. The glaring omission from this movie is Rutger Hauer's amazing portrayal as the hitcher. Although Jake Busey does a pretty good job portraying the hitcher, Rutger Hauer's performance in the first movie is much better. If you've seen the original "Hitcher", then this movie is worth watching only to see how the story plays out. If you haven't seen the first movie, then you'll have a hard time following the storyline of this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad But Not Original!.......2005-05-10

Let me start off by saying that "The Hitcher" is one of my all time favorite movies, been so for almost 20 years now and going into the sequel I really wasn't expecting all that much and, to be honest, it delivered what I expected.

While the first 5 minutes or so of the film where intriguing and had a great twist, the movie fails to deliver any new scares. While C. Thomas Howell was incredible as a teenager driving across country, the older version of his character seems to flounder in an attempt to rekindle the suspense from the original. Of course the biggest missing piece of the movie is that of Rutger Hauer. While Jake Busey makes a nice attempt at a mysterious, road dwelling psychopath, there's just replacing Hauer. Kari Wuhrer does an admirable job of playing the victim turned heroine.

While the movie itself isn't terrible, it's just not original. The plot is pretty much a cheap carbon copy of the original. If your a big fan of the original and are curious as to what the sequel brings I might suggest you rent it. I wouldn't suggest buying it. Buy the original instead!

2 out of 5 stars Oedipus In A Winnebago.......2007-01-08

I don't like Italian horror movies as much as some others, but I had heard that this was a worthwhile effort from director Umberto Lenzi. Although the film did have some suspenseful scenes they were few and far between, and many of the plot "twists" let me thinking "yeah, right" (especially the scene where the evil rich kid with the motorhome takes it to a drive-in movie with his two chained and shackled victims in the back). Interestingly, I was very intrigued with the film being shown at the drive-in and had to wonder what on earth it was. If it was a real movie (which seems likely) and not a contrivance for this film, then the reactions of the crowd are completely inappropriate given the very, very poor quality of the clips seen. I actually found that quandary more interesting than the central plot of the film, which doesn't speak well of Lenzi's handiwork.

The film does have high points, notably Josie Bissett, who turns in a very credible performance (although the conclusion can be seen coming a mile away) and a couple of well crafted plot twists. The problem is that anytime a genuinely scary twist occurs, it has an unbelievable resolution (especially the "road block" scene which made me roll my eyes and groan audibly).

The movie would have been much improved if Lenzi had done two things: reduce running time by about 15 minutes (it is 90 minutes long, and includes a lot of extraneous filler, most of which involve very bad dancing at truck stops) and recast the role of the evildoer with anyone other than Joe Balogh, who is good at the empty-eyed stare of a genuine lunatic, and, unfortunately, nothing else. His performance irritated me more as the film progressed, and for watching such a "taut thriller" I found myself very bored, the worst possible condemnation of a film of this nature.

I decided on two stars overall: Bissett is very pretty and is very good in her role, but that is the only thing to recommend "Hitcher in the Dark."

4 out of 5 stars anyone for a ride.......2005-10-31

This is a campy killer. The dude picks up hitchhikers (babes of course) and teaches them a lesson of their life. It has some excitment and suspense that are very spooky. I personally liked the movie and makes me and my wife a special event every time we go camping. Take a look if you can find it well worth it.Lenzi is a far out and off the wall director that has done some pretty scary stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Yes, it's that bad........2004-01-30

Hitcher in the Dark (Umberto Lenzi, 1989)

Directed by Umberto Lenzi under the name Humphrey Humbert and produced by Joe D'Amato. I mean, come on, doesn't that just scream "Emmanuelle meets Cannibal Ferox" to you?

Keep screaming. It ain't even close.

A rich kid (Joe Balogh, who also worked with Lenzi in Black Demons) has his father's camper and is taking it down the coast. Along the way, he happens to be picking up hitchhikers and killing them. Until, that is, he meets Daniela (Josie Bissett in her screen debut) and becomes obsessed with her. Her boyfriend is following them, the cops are turning up bodies, and Daniela, of course, keeps spurning his advances...

By that synopsis, vague as it is, you may be wondering what all this has to do with the title. Nothing. It would have been like taking Henry V and calling it "Please Don't Eat the Daisies." Second, Joe Balogh may be the world's worst actor. (And even scarier, in the DVD extras, Lenzi says in an interview that Balogh was much more involved in his character here than he was in Black Demons-- THERE'S one to avoid!) His voice barely registers any emotion, and then only when he's angry. Bissett does well enough to have gotten her a career, but is the only highlight in the otherwise uniformly atrocious acting. The movie looks very dated, as well, from the hairstyles to the clothing to the godawfully cheesy music that wanted desperately to be a Goblin soundtrack. By the time you get to the two "bikers," you'll have already figured out this movie doesn't even rate as a cheesefest. Lenzi's carping that the production company changed the ending has nothing to do with the film's being bad. *

3 out of 5 stars Anybody read "The Collector"?.......2003-07-16

This interesting film is rather difficult to review. It tells the story of an RV driving serial killer who picks up unsuspecting women and who also has some serious issues concerning his mother. The acting of the male lead is rather poor and rarely demonstrates why anyone would actually want to enter this guy's RV, let alone be anywhere near him. This is the main problem as only the most unobservant person would think this individual is safe to get a ride from. That said, the film works on a tension level as the viewer truly wants to see the main female character find a way out of the situation. The film borrows rather freely from John Fowles novel "The Collector" with many scenes being lifted almost exactly. The DVD contains an interview with the director, Umberto Lenzi, in which, no mention of this connection is made. In all, "Hitcher in the Dark" is worth seeing if you are a fan of Italian Giallo, the director, or early eighties fashions as they are in full display here. The DVD presentation is acceptable with only very mild color saturation issues at one point. The extras include the director interview and three trailers. One warning; do not watch the director interview before the film as he explains why the ending is so dumb and how it had originally ended, which is much better.

This is a movie that has it all, chilling and funny at the same time. These actors make this quirky story work, and after one viewing, you'll want to see it again. It was re-released as "Highway Hitcher" to try to find an audience, but that is not even an apt title for this piece of work. Don't miss this, under either banner!

5 out of 5 stars I love it!.......2001-01-17

This movie was a pleasant surprise for me. Forsythe dropped his tough-guy image and did a makeover as a milquetoast businessman who innocently picks up a hitchhiker and drives into trouble. This is one of his best, and he's totally believable in the role. Forsythe's one of my favorite actors because he becomes the characters he plays. I will add this movie to my collection.

--Ted Fry

are tossed to the wind, in exchange for good fun ride.
