Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958, Vertigo has since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. In fact, it consistently ranks among the top 10 movies ever made in the once-a-decade Sight & Sound international critics poll, placing at number 4 in the most recent survey. (Universal Pictures' spectacularly gorgeous 1996 restoration and rerelease of this 1958 Paramount production was a tremendous success with the public, too.) James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. The detective and the disturbed woman fall ("fall" is indeed the operative word) in love and...well, to give away any more of the story would be criminal. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor, Vertigo is as lovely as it is haunting. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Vertigo.......2007-06-27

Hitchcock's psychological tingler was not a huge success on release, but understandably has achieved cult status over time. Ambitious, dense and more than slightly twisted, "Vertigo" is both an elaborate puzzler and a meditation on man's basest fears and desires. Though perhaps a trifle old for the part, Stewart brings a barely suppressed desperation to Scotty that resonates, while Novak is ideal in a dual identity role, playing Madonna-like Madeleine, and the garish, earthy Judy, whom Scottie meets later in the saga. Glorious San Francisco locales, and a peerless Bernard Herrmann score complete this winning package from the master of suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Hitchcock at his trippiest..............2007-06-01

VERTIGO remains one of the most thought-provoking films I have ever seen. I still remember my first taste of this film (at least thirteen years ago!). It's safe to say (without exaggeration) that it changed my life and how I view cinematography. Yes, I know that is a tall statement to make about this movie, but it's well-merited. Why? For starters, Alfred Hitchcock's depiction of the medical condition of vertigo (extreme dizziness onset by perceived or actual drops in height--example: standing at the top of a tall staircase and glancing down at the ground floor from where you stand) feels like, both, a deep acid trip (complete with spinning imagery and disorientation), as well as a really extreme look at the effect of this condition on Scotty (James Stewart), a retired policeman, hired by an old friend to follow his beautiful wife (Kim Novak) who believes is possessed by the dead soul of a mad woman. Of course, this woman also has a penchant for ascending to great heights and attempting to jump off of them. This only adds another twist to Scotty's pursuit of the woman.

Alfred Hitchcock always had a flair for bringing the ironic, gothic and darkly comedic all to the foreground, in his films. Cinematography was one way he achieved (and manipulated) these emotions in the stories he wove so eloquently, on screeen. VERTIGO is no exception. What's more, Kim Novak is a very compelling and beautiful actress who stepped out of her more "cheesecake" roles to play the role of Madeleine, a very deeply disturbed (and perhaps, psychologically pursued?) woman with a secret. What's more, I love James Stewart, here. His relationship with Madeleine is conflicted and borders on pseudo-erotic. Of course, I won't divulge more plot details here. I just figured dropping that clue would tease and tantalize you enough to want to see this great film for yourself. I am so glad that it was given the kudos it deserved, with a re-released DVD addition. Great news!!!

4 out of 5 stars Criterion Collection would have done a superior job!.......2007-05-28

This mesmerizing film has been part of our culture for over a half-century. While it has its flaws -- especially in a script that reaches it's climax too early, and tacks on a final twist that is so unsatisfying-- it's a legacy film worth all the praise it has received.

James Stewart and Kim Novak are each remarkable, and the cinematography is perhaps the best of any Hitchcock film. Indeed, so many compelling moments in the film have no dialogue, the camera work is amazing. Bernard Hermann's score is consistently fine, though at times overbearing. The complexities of plot and use of symbols and colors throughout the movie are dazzing.

So why not five stars? Because Universal Home Video screwed up this particular remaster so badly, it interfered with my enjoyment in a BIG way. While the visual transfer is acceptable, the sound remastering is gruesome, with the score blasting several decibels above the voices, with reengineered sound effects produced on a Foley stage, and some critical dialogue marred by rolloff distortion. (Some viewers care about this stuff; others don't.)

Here's the beef. No corporation has the right to re-engineer a film -- especially one of this caliber -- in a way that alters the intent of the fimmaker. If one adds to that the weird balance of score and voice on the DVD, the occasional man-made distorion and trumped-up sound effects -- it's just not right. As for anamorphic widescreen, forget about it. It's not here.

I buy Criterion Collection remasters more than any because they are faithful to the originals, because their extras are meaningful, and because the company simply respects great movies. Their DVDs may cost a little more, but the payoff is worth it. Hopefully, Criterion will secure the rights to this beautiful chiller some day so the next generation can see it the way filmgoers did in the 1950's.

A wonderful psychological thriller poorly transferred and remastered by a company that should have known better.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling!.......2007-04-23

This timeless thriller is one I love to watch often on a Sunday afternoon. One of Alfred Hitchcock's greats! James Stewart plays the police detective Scottie Ferguson who suffers from vertigo when in high places after the accidental death of a police friend during a roof chase. The accidental death is partly Scottie's fault and he bears the mental scars. Before he can recover from one blow, he's given another when duped by a beautiful woman and an old friend who have a sinister plot and a part for Scottie to unwittingly play.

5 out of 5 stars One of Hitchock's best!.......2007-04-05

This haunting, mysterious, romantic movie about obsession is amazing every time I watch it. Although Hitchcock didn't originally cast Kim Novak as the source of Jimmy Stewart's affections, he later admitted that she made this movie what it is. The beautiful San Francisco Bay Area is truly a memorable "character" in this fabulous classic.

At last--a great American movie available on video for the first time in its original aspect ratio. For all the slasher pictures that have ripped off Psycho (and particularly its classic set piece, the "shower scene"), nothing has ever matched the impact of the real thing. More than just a first-rate shocker full of thrills and suspense, Psycho is also an engrossing character study in which director Alfred Hitchcock skillfully seduces you into identifying with the main characters--then pulls the rug (or the bathmat) out from under you. Anthony Perkins is unforgettable as Norman Bates, the mama's boy proprietor of the Bates Motel; and so is Janet Leigh as Marion Crane, who makes an impulsive decision and becomes a fugitive from the law, hiding out at Norman's roadside inn for one fateful night. Psycho gets the masterpiece treatment it deserves on DVD, with extras including newsreel footage surrounding the making and release of the movie; an archive of production stills; the special trailer in which Hitchcock (acting as one of the original Universal Studio tour guides) himself leads viewers around the Bates place; credit designer Saul Bass's original "shower scene" story boards; posters and advertising materials for the movie's William Castle-like publicity campaign (No One Will Be Seated After the Feature Begins!); and a 90-minute documentary on the making of the film! What more could any movie fan possibly want? --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Psycho.......2007-06-28

Made at the peak of his career in 1960, "Psycho" was suspense master Hitchcock's last and most famous black-and-white picture--and a film that inaugurated the sub-genre of slasher movie. By the standards of today's gore-fests, it's a fairly restrained murder mystery, but disturbing nonetheless, achieving its chills more by what is withheld than shown. Hitchcock knows just how to heighten our dread of who or what might be at the top of the stairs, or beyond that shower curtain. The terrifying "Psycho" stands above most any psychological thriller made since.

3 out of 5 stars Still Waiting For Anamorphic Widescreen!.......2007-06-13

Attention widescreen t.v. owners: this dvd is not in anamorphic widescreen(enhanced for 16 x 9). A couple of years ago "Psycho" was re-released on dvd in the Alfred Hitchcock collection. It is in anamorphic widescreen. Since then Universal has been SLOWLY releasing titles from the collection in anamorphic for the first time. Well when do we get "Psycho"???!!! I'd love to add this film to my collection, but will not do it until it is properly presented for widescreen t.v.

This movie is not R rated it should be PG like Vertigo. The shower scene is one of the most famous scenes in history and my favorite charactor is "mother" because you dont see her till the end.
My favorite part is when the detective gets stabbed and falls down the stairs.
I love the music that plays in the shower scene because the strings are so high pitched it sounds like screaming.
When I get older I want to make a Psycho of my own.

Halloween is as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especially Psycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter of Psycho victim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character in Psycho. In the end, though, Halloween stands on its own as an uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. Curtis returned for two more installments: 1981's dismal Halloween II, which picked up the story the day after the unfortunate events, and 1998's occasionally gripping Halloween H20, which proved the former baby sitter was still haunted after 20 years. --Robert Horton

John Carpenter's first and best entry in a long series, this movie gives the slasher pic a good name (that is, until you sit through all those pale re-treads). This lean feature works because it's both original and daringly basic: Laurie is a young teenage girl up against a monster, with only her wits and her two feet to protect her from the wrong end of a large butcher knife. Will Laurie and her young charges make it to Thanksgiving? You'll remain on the edge of your seat finding out.

I just picked up this movie the other day and i have been a huge fan of the halloween series all my life and just never had the original. I never knew how much I lovede it until yesturday. This movie is awsome and John Carpenter and Debra Hill are genuises. Half the movie is shot in mid day and is still as scary as if was shot in night. This is Jamie lee curtis best film and does a great job in it. I also love Michael is this one the way he walks and such. Anyway pick up this movie it's awsome.

Oh the good old days of the element of surprise and fear waiting for Michael Meyers to jump out and whack you ! I became a fan in 1978 and still get creeped out when I see Michael.

4 out of 5 stars He Came Home.......2007-06-07

When John Carpenter gave form to "The Shape", aka Michael Myers, he crafted a chilling story of suspense around this murderer. Before the stupid "sister storyline", the attempt at turning Myers into some supernatural bogeyman, or the reboot which only tarnished the original further (Sorry, but Jamie Lee has definitely lost what acting skills she once had), there was the tale of a child who simply was...evil. He came home on Halloween night to relive the horror of his first murder. He was not a man. He was, pure and simply, evil. Now why did we need to know more than that?

4 out of 5 stars Carpenter's Halloween.......2007-05-22

The oldest sister of all psycho-thrillers: a modern revision of the boogeyman's myth shot in 1978 by John Carpenter, probably the only horror movies artisan still in action. Although many of the rudiments of psycho movies can be already find in the first italian giallos and, of course, in Hitchcock's "Psycho", its very calculated prologue contains as if it was a manual all the leit-motives of the genre: the use of the subjective camera and the steadycam for supporting the suspense scenes; atmospherical travellings; obssessive and disturbing sound effects and cold-blood murders. Proving once more that to suggest is more effective than to resort to explicit shots, and looking for a pure horror show without gratuitous violence Carpenter reinvents wisely through the tradition in this very smart and stylised horror classic: for example, the suggestion that colour white can hold a devilish connotation is already in Edgar Poe's " The narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket". Donald Pleasance plays the psychiatrist Dr. Loomis, a sort of modern Van Helsing and the man who better knows the evil nature of his patient Michael Myers, recently escaped from the asylum Dr.Loomis rules.

Another chance to recover this indisputable classic. Widescreen edition.

Stephen Sondheim's Victorian horror thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is generally considered his greatest work, macabre but darkly humorous with a viscerally powerful score that has found a home both on Broadway and in opera houses. George Hearn (who replaced Len Cariou of the original Broadway cast) plays the title character, a wronged man whose lust for revenge drives him to murder (an 18th-century legend who has been traced to a real-life barber), and Angela Lansbury plays his partner in crime, Mrs. Lovett, who finds a practical business use for Todd's victims. This combination of horror and humor is echoed in Sondheim's score: brooding menace ("The Ballad of Sweeney Todd," "My Friend"), achingly beautiful ballads ("Johanna," "Not While I'm Around"), clever puns ("A Little Priest"), coloratura arias ("Green Finch and Linnet Bird"), and intricate choral and ensemble numbers.

Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi

Description

Times are hard in 1846 London and one must make do. So Nellie Lovett adds something extra to the meat pies she peddles on Fleet Street. The secret ingredient: freshly murdered victims of her partner in crime, barber Sweeney Todd. Composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim refashions a macabre tale into a musical masterwork in this dazzling performance of the 1979 Broadway hit originally staged by Harold Prince. In her Tony-winning role (one of eight the show earned, including Best Musical), Angela Lansbury plays Nellie. George Hearn turns his stage role of twisted Sweeney into an Emmy-winning triumph. The score coils around itself in ever-tightening spirals. The lines ripple with black humor and madness. Enter Sweeney's tonsorial parlor. Attend the tale.

4 out of 5 stars Film record of the stage production.......2007-02-01

Halfway between movie and stage is the filming of a stage production. It is difficult to capture the intimacy and immediacy of theater on film, difficult to exercise the kind of control that film offers on stage. This is a filming of a live stage presentation. It looks reasonably good and sound quality seems fine. The major selling point is Angela Lansbury's fine performance as the demented Mrs. Lovett. It is a wonderful performance and considering how many wonderful performances on stage are lost forever, it is nice to see this one preserved. A lifetime of playing villainesses seems to free her to approach the part with utter abandon. The musical itself is excellent and beautifully done. The biggest concern I have is that with a price this high, the DVD clearly was made as cheaply as possible with a cheap cardboard container and absolutely no extras of any kind. I do not think that there is anything that would justify the cost and, while I am pleased to have the film, I am disgusted at the inordinately high price charged. It is a crime to make so little effort in simply reproducing a film whose costs were quite limited in the first place, packaging it as cheaply as possible and then charging top dollar for the final product. It is really shameful.

5 out of 5 stars Sweeny Todd.......2007-01-28

Sweeney Todd is a wonderfully dark romp through broadway. It follows the story of Benjamin Barker, a barber who was jilted by the judge and beetle of old time London and soon seeks revenge. A wonderful performance by Angela Lansbury as Nellie Lovett and Len Cariou as Sweeny Todd.

4 out of 5 stars The not-such-a-demon barber of fleet street.......2007-01-11

It is easy to see why Angela Lansbury won a Tony for this peformance. The sets, scenery and costumes are wonderful. The cast is quite effective, but at times it is very hard to distinguish some of the lyrics in the larger production numbers. A must see for anyone that is aware that Tim Burton is going to bring his own unique take on this story to life.

After years of enduring Roger Moore in the role of James Bond, it was good to have Sean Connery back in this 1983 film for a one-time-only trip down 007's memory lane. Connery's Bond, a bit of a dinosaur in the British secret service at (then) 52, is still in demand during times of crisis. Sadly, the film is not very good. In this rehash of Thunderball, Bond is pitted against a worthy underwater villain (Klaus Maria Brandauer); and while the requisite Bond Girls include beauties Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera, they can't save the movie. The script has several truly dumb passages, among them a (gasp) video-game duel between 007 and his nemesis that now looks utterly anachronistic. For Connery fans, however, this widescreen print of the Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back) film is a chance to say a final goodbye to a perfect marriage of actor and character. --Tom Keogh

Description

Sean Connery is back for his final performance as superagent James Bond in this high-velocity action thriller from the director of The Empire Strikes Back. 1 out of 5 stars Worst Bond Film ever.......2007-06-25

While watching this film I was disgusted, not only was it a blatent rip-off of Thunderball, but they tried to be funny in this movie, which in my opinion they completely failed, if you are thinking about buying this movie, I would rent it first. This movie may appeal to some, but thank God I saw it on TV, because if I would have bought this movie I would have been even sicker than I was after watching this travesty. You have me correct this movie made me sick, now all may not feel the same as I, but if you are thinking about buying this movie, and you haven't seen it yet. I would suggest renting, though if you really like the movie, or you are a completest, Bond fan, well then go for it. Though in my opinion, this is the worst Bond movie I've seen, especially the worst Sean Connery "Bond" film I've seen. Though I must say Kim Basinger was very hot. So I leave the decision up to you.

3 out of 5 stars uhhhhhhhhh................2007-06-14

As much as I liked Connery as Bond, I just didn't like this movie.

1 out of 5 stars DOWN WITH REMAKES!.......2007-05-27

I've never been a big fan of remakes. It seems to be particularly annoying with this one, since the main actor was also the one who starred in the original. This would seem to make re-hashing this movie a pointless endeavour. Why not just watch the original? I find it hard to believe that so many other reviewers have said this is a good movie.

5 out of 5 stars Bond Fans will Enjoy This Movie.......2007-05-24

Even though it isn't officially part of the Bond series as far as canon is concerned, "Never Say Never Again" is still a solid Bond film that all fans need to buy if they have never seen it and want their collection complete. Sean Connery, who is actually younger than Roger Moor who was doing Octopussy at the same time, shows that he is Bond and no one can play that character the way he does. The only thing this movie doesn't is other familiar actors known in the Bond series, different people playing Moneypenny, M, Q and the first African American to play Felix (Casino Royale wasn't the first) is seen in this movie.

There are a few future stars in this film, mainly the sexy Kim Basinger and the funny Rowan Atkinson who would later be known as Mr. Bean! Yes, Mr. Bean is in this movie. Overall, this is fun and never loses the Bond spirit. The movie is fun, which is the intention since Sean said prior to the film that he would never play Bond again, which they joke reference at the end of the movie and were they got the title of the movie from. This is definitely worth buying, it is rarely seen on TV and won't probably ever be included in a set of Bond movies, but it is still worth buying separately.

3 out of 5 stars farewell to the original Bond.......2007-03-11

I have mixed emotions towards this film. It is quite unique as it is not really part of the Bond series, yet it still is. It was produced by the company that had the copyright of the script but not the movie series so it lacks the traditional Bond theme and it was released the same year as Octapussy and they competed against each other.
This was also Connery's last perfomance as James Bond and lathough he is nowhere close to his originla 60's perfomances he is way better than Roger Moore. The script is a remake of Thunderball but not as good as the original and it does have some flat points.
If one judges this film with today's standarts then the film is quite weak- however if you judge it with the rivals of its time then this film does have merit. Klaus Maria Brandauer is a wondeful villain but on the other hand Kim Basinger perfomance is rather poor.
All in all this film is worth seeing if you are a Bond fun but do not have high expectations and that way you will enjoy it

"You can't kill the bogeyman," the children insist to a terrorized Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in the original Halloween. How right they are. Laurie is gone, but guess who's back in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers? Acting as if the third entry never existed, this installment picks up 10 years after the original, with mad maniac Myers in a coma and moved to a new facility. But wouldn't you know it that as soon as a loose-lipped orderly lets slip that Myers has a surviving niece he springs back into action, leaving a bloody trail of corpses on the road to Haddonfield. Donald Pleasance returns as Dr. Loomis, scarred and crippled from his last encounter with Myers and seething with a fanatical zeal to stop the freak from repeating his previous rampage. Pleasance is the best thing about the film as an aging hero seemingly on the verge of madness who drags a bum leg in his manic rush to save little orphan Jamie (Danielle Harris), the 10-year-old waif terrorized by her homicidal uncle. Director Dwight Little has managed a generic if professional slasher picture, rife with improbabilities and dominated by a killer whose superhuman powers reach near-mystical dimensions, but he delivers the goods: shocks, stabs, and cold, cruel killings. --Sean Axmaker

Description

TEN YEARS AGO, HE CHANGED THE FACE OF HALLOWEEN. TONIGHT, HE'S BACK. A decade ago, he butchered 16 people trying to get to his sister. He was shot and incinerated, but still the entity that Dr. Sam Loomis (the legendary Donald Pleasence) calls "Evil on two legs" would not die. Tonight, Michael Myers has come home again…to kill! This time, Michael returns to Haddonfield for Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris of HALLOWEEN 5 and THE LAST BOY SCOUT) - the orphaned daughter of Laurie Strode - and her babysitter Rachel (Ellie Cornell of HALLOWEEN 5 and HOUSE OF THE DEAD). Can Loomis stop Michael before the unholy slaughter reaches his innocent young niece? Michael Pataki, Sasha Jenson and Kathleen Kinmont co-star in this smash sequel that marked the long-awaited return to the original storyline and remains infamous for its startling twist ending and graphic violence.

5 out of 5 stars It isn't a man.......2007-06-26

This is still the sequel to Halloween 2 over H20 for me. Dannielle Harris is just brilliant in this film at such a young age. Donald also delivers as usual. this brought the franchise to new heights and spawned two more good sequels.

4 out of 5 stars The Return of Michael Myers.......2007-06-18

This movie is a great sequal and is one of my favorites. Lot of suspenes in this one and has a great storyline. my recomenation is to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Horror Film........2007-06-17

Halloween 4 is an excellent horror film and most certainly one of the best in the Halloween series. This film isnt quite like a lot of horror films around the time it was made and now because it doesnt really rely on blood and gore to scary the piss out of you. It mostly relys on the atmosphere of a dark night and the music. Thats what great horror films are all about is if they can scare you without even showing anything that is remotely scary. This film is an example of that concept. The script, the acting, and the score are incredible. Especially for a horror film. Ive noticed after seeing many horror films that this movie feels like Jaws or Gone With the Wind in terms of quality of every single aspect within it. The shape is performed very good here. The mask is cool as well, unlike what many people say. Here we find the greatest ending of any other Halloween film and one of the best ever filmed. Very good script that is pretty tight through the entire movie. This is a fantastic horror film that still amazes viewers because its aging very well. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars MICHAEL IS COMING HOME AGAIN? GOOD SEQUEL! .......2007-05-29

It is really hard to judge the sequels to Halloween. The first film is a classic and none of the sequels come close to it. This 4th installment(3rd featuring Michael)is OK if you can get past the good Dr. Loomis and Michael surviving the explosion at the hospital in the second film. The film looks good and there are some good chills and thrills along the way,but in the end, you feeling like you have seen it all before. Not the worst in the series, thats for sure!

5 out of 5 stars "Die you son of a *****!" Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers.......2007-05-12

In 1988, 10 years after the original Halloween terrorized audiences, Director Dwight H. Little teamed up with executive producer Moustapha Akkad to create what is arguably the greatest Halloween sequel to date.

Laurie Stode's little 8 year old daughter Jamie Lloyd is now orphaned due to a fatal car crash. Michael in the midst of a transfer of sanitariums escapes leaving a bloody ambulence behind. Only Dr. Loomis knows where Michael is heading, and again after 10 years time, nobody believes him. Haddenfield recieves one more night of unholy terror as Michael comes closer and closer to his ultimate goal of killing Jamie.

This film is really effective now and especially when it first came out. In 1988 we saw such great sequels to other horror franchises such as Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason takes Manhatten and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. I'm being sarcastic of course as neither of these films got large profit at the box office. This was a fresh and well done shot for the Halloween series. With such memorable sequences such as the roof top chase and the car chase at the end, this movie has very little flaws. i guess my only criticism is that I don't find Michael nearly as scary with sideburns on his mask. This film blew me away as being the best sequel to Halloween. The ending is also the most affective ending aside from H20 and Halloween.

The Divimax edition of this film gives us two new audio commentaries from the likes of Ellie Cornell and Danielle Harris (the two main actors in the movie). Their commentary is good an fun but they don't really know that much about the series or the film itself, I found myself knowing more than they did. Alan B. McElroy's commentary is very immformative and flows well with the movie. It also includes a panal discussion on Halloween 4 and 5 from the 25th anneversary convention which is a great addition as you don't find this particular discussion on the H25: 25 years of terror dvd.

This film deserves 5 stars for giving Halloween a fresh start and the sequel it deserved from the getgo. Sadly, the next two entries sorely lack in the originality that this film brought or the freshness it brought to the franchise.

5 out of 5 stars Halloween.......2007-07-03

John Carpenter's first and best entry in a long series, this movie gives the slasher pic a good name (that is, until you sit through all those pale re-treads). This lean feature works because it's both original and daringly basic: Laurie is a young teenage girl up against a monster, with only her wits and her two feet to protect her from the wrong end of a large butcher knife. Will Laurie and her young charges make it to Thanksgiving? You'll remain on the edge of your seat finding out.

5 out of 5 stars THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME........2007-06-23

I just picked up this movie the other day and i have been a huge fan of the halloween series all my life and just never had the original. I never knew how much I lovede it until yesturday. This movie is awsome and John Carpenter and Debra Hill are genuises. Half the movie is shot in mid day and is still as scary as if was shot in night. This is Jamie lee curtis best film and does a great job in it. I also love Michael is this one the way he walks and such. Anyway pick up this movie it's awsome.

5 out of 5 stars Halloween Movies.......2007-06-20

"You can't kill the boogeyman," explains John Carpenter in Halloween, and to prove it he brings Michael Myers back in this handsome but grisly sequel. Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode but spends most of her time cowering in a hospital gown, and Donald Pleasence runs around like a maniac as the panicky doctor desperate to hunt down Myers before he kills again. Carpenter writes and produces with partner Debra Hill, and together they replace the mystery and uncertainty of the original with an exponentially bigger body count and some strange tales about the Druids and pagan ceremonies, and the now-familiar family ties between Michael and Laurie. First-time director Rick Rosenthal (Bad Boys) paces the film at a brisk jog and directs it with a clean, crisp style, taking the murders out of the dark to display them in all their nasty detail. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars "You don't know what death is!".......2007-06-26

I Think this film is a fantastic sequel. Picking up exactly where the first left off was a great idea, although obvious. To me Jamie lee's performance of an emotionally and physically drained Lauire was the perfect touch. This is a time where Jamie Lee Curtis still needed what a Halloween film could do, unlike H20 where the franchise needed her.Donald Pleasence is even better the second time around taking little guff from anyone.

4 out of 5 stars MORE OF THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME!!!!.......2007-06-18

Halloween 2 takes place right after the original and michael's sister laurie strode is taken to the hospital. Michael is again on the loose and killing anyone who gets in the way of killing his sister.

I think halloween 2 is one of the best in the series. It follows right up with the original and has a very shcoking twist. However alot of people think john carpenter directed this movie but he did not. He was the producer along with debra hill. I think if john would have direted it also it would have been a better film. I feel times that it gets very boring and lightens on the suspense. Another thing is the charachters. This and resurection are the only movie that dont have good charachters. it is erelevent that those to movies are directed by the same guy. But overall halloween 2 is a great addition to the series and i recommened picking it up.

2 out of 5 stars The Halloween series went from brilliant to average/mediocre in just one movie.......2007-04-18

Spoiler Alert!!!

What's revealed in Halloween 2 (that Michael's been going after his sister all along) is perhaps a creative spin that no one saw coming. But the problem with this is that Michael is a far less scary figure because he's not a psycho (well at least not as big a psycho) as we orginally thought because he's not randomly killing people. I liked the original because Jamie Lee Cutis is someone you can relate to because she could represent anyone of us. But this movie turns her from "anyone of us" to just his sister. It unknowingly hints that as long as you are not Michael's sister or are near his sister, you are safe. I don't want to completely bash this film because there is some action and it is in some respects a guilty pleasure. Maybe worth a rent but try not to take it too seriously.

The original was, more or less, a perfect atmospheric film with a flawless ending (how most horror films should end) and is the only one truly worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars More of the night HE came home.......2007-03-22

Halloween 2 continues the Halloween saga. Michael Myers is still on the loose in Haddonfield on that same Halloween night. Laurie Strode is left cowering in the hospital, and Dr. Loomis is trying his best to hunt down Michael Myers, and kill him forever. But Michael learns that Laurie is in the hospital and follows her there, killing everyone who gets in his way.

Halloween 2 is one of the best horror sequals of all time. It takes place on the same night as Halloween 1, and is just as scary. This exciting and fun to watch sequal will scare everyone. Halloween 2: The nightmare isn't over.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD SEQUEL TO THE ORIGINAL.......2007-03-21

The first Halloween is a classic. "Halloween II" starts off right where the other film stops. The DVD transfer is good, but a special edition would be appreciated by fans of the series.

5 out of 5 stars Total Recall.......2007-05-13

Very good action movie with great performances by Arnold Schwarzenegger and SHARON STONE.The special effects are dazzling; it even won a special achievement Oscar.I recommend this movie

5 out of 5 stars one fo the best arnolds.......2007-02-28

this movie is awesome its super violent and the makeup looks amazing still screw computer effects

3 out of 5 stars I "recall" it being a better movie.......2006-12-14

Enjoyable experience back in the 80s; not so much now. The acting is stiff, the makeup is bad and the 80 hairstyles are laughable. Still the script was amazing...any chance of a remake without Arnold?

4 out of 5 stars The Reality Or Nonreality Of Philip K. Dick.......2006-10-10

You've got to hand it to the late Philip K. Dick; no one was better at writing about what reality is. Or at least questioned it. Are we in reality? Is what I am seeing and feeling real? And Dick's concept of the reality versus nonreality world in which we live in is given full treatment in the film. Moreover, in the film, "Total Recall," this is made clearly evident, [or not] when you wonder if Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenneger) truly is in his own reality, or if he is still in his cubicle on Earth. The film is based on Dick's short-story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale." The film is a very enjoyable watch, and has enough suspense to keep you riveted to your seat.

I especially liked the part when Quaid is visited by the Doctor in charge of the Implant business on Earth, where he bought his virtual-reality tour of Mars. It is at that point you begin to wonder: Is he really on Earth? And is this Mars business all a part of Quaid's Implant? Personally, I think that something has gone horribly wrong during his implant, and as a result, we are witnessing his reality as nothing more than a mind about to be lobotomized. And this is given by the many clues in the film. Watch the film and see for yourself. Highly recommended. [Stars: 4.5]

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-09-23

This is where Arnold figured it all out. He had a great script and a director who could help him execute an idea that could have been a real dud. Thankfully, all details were handled well and we get a well paced movie that keeps you guessing the whole time.

The series premise continues to stretch so thin it could dissipate. This time, Michael Myers chases his unfortunate niece around, then goes after a family who happen to be living in his former home. This is slasher-ism at its most cynical, and a thoroughly unpleasant, unimaginative, and unredeeming movie. Donald Pleasence, the one holdover from the original film, looks like he'd rather be anywhere than in this thing. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I Actually Loved This Movie!.......2007-06-19

This more than likely the most underrated film Ive ever seen. No joke. I know the film gets trashed by critics and a lot of the Halloween fans alike. Nevertheless theres still something about the film that keeps me entertained even after Ive watched it 50 times. I really liked the story and the death scenes in the film. Not to mention this is the scariest out of all the Haloween movies. I just never really understood how anyone who likes Horror films cant find something good in this. I always recommend viewers wanting to see this to try to find the Producers Cut of the film. Its not an official release, but it can be found if you know where to look. Most of the time fans of this film make those Producers Cuts. Some of the great things about the film is the score(especially the Producers Cut of the film), the photography, a lot of the acting, and the creepy atmosphere it puts on. This IS the most brutal of all the other Halloween movies. I absloutely love seeing Myers kill people in this film. Im sure that sounds sadistic, but you can root for him sometimes. I always try to give this film credit and love. Ive even spent up to $75 on buying Producers Cuts of the film! Ive always had a soft spot for it. Definitely one of my favorite films. Its not for everyone though. I just recommend to anyone who watches it to have an open mind and try to see some of the awesome things in the film. They are most certainly there.

4 out of 5 stars SCARIEST HALLOWEEN EVER!!!.......2007-06-18

This is the scariest one is the series. Most people hate this one because it explains why michael kills a reveals the cult that is behind all his madness. I usally would hate a film like this but for some reason i did not and i am sure why. If you take aside the whole cult thing it's another great addition to the series. but whatever I like it.

1 out of 5 stars STOP IT ALREADY! DO NOT COME HOME EVER AGAIN!.......2007-06-03

Halloween part 6 The Curse of Michael Myers is the worst entry in the series so far! After a fairly good installment with Halloween part 4 The Return of Michael Myers, they followed it up with, what I thought was the worst Halloween movie ever Halloween part 5 The Revenge of Michael Myers. Now we have the abysmal part 6. This movie is not only boring, it doesn't even try to be consistent with it's past sequels. What happened to Dr. Loomis's Scars on his face and hands? Why is Michael so big and brawny now? Why do they change the Shape's mask in every movie? This movie makes Jason X look like an Oscar winner! I have not seen the director's cut,but no one could make this boring and stupid mess work! This almost makes Halloween part 5 look good!

3 out of 5 stars "Danny...Kill for him." Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.......2007-05-13

In 1995, Director Joe Chappelle butchered Daniel Farrands script by putting his artistic vision onto it. This is the second weakest entry in the series, but it is miles ahead of the crapfest that was Halloween 5. This entry tried to give Michael a backstory and failed misserably.

Jamie's character has a baby and the thorn cult attempts to put the same evil, the same rage that is in Michael into her baby. She escapes with the baby, but only the baby survives after Michael chases after her. Michael then stalks and kills members of a family that are living in his old house all in attempts to either kill or capture Jamie's baby. So, basically Michael stalks and kills once again.

The backstory which works fine when reading the script doesn't transfer to film well at all. In fact the whole script itself seems it would work much better as a novel than as a movie. The acting isn't extraordinary and it isn't horrendous, but it is above average for a part 6. Marianne Hagen in particular does a fabulous job in the film, seeing that this is her first film.

The film suffers the most from the ending which doesn't play well at all, I haven't met a single person who liked the ending to this film. The ending just leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth and that is in my opinion why this movie failed is that the ending didn't make much sense at all. The over the top effects don't help matters much either because it gets so over the top you stop believing that this could actually happen to a human.

The dvd promotes the Scream trilogy boxset and Halloween H20, but abosolutely nothing about Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is found in this dvd not even a trailer (a trailer is tagged at the beginning of Halloween: Resurrection before the main menu comes up).

In conclusion, the thing that drags this entry down so much is the crappy direction and the ending. But the ending is awful enough that I can't recommend this movie to anyone, so this one, like the previous entry is reserved for Halloween die-hards only. If you've never seen a Halloween film before stay away from this entry.

5 out of 5 stars Michael myers is back.......2007-03-03

Personally, I love Michael myers. I consider him my boyfriend because I love the films. I was researching about him and I found out that they are remaking a film and it shall be in theatres on august 31, 2007. I am so freaked and I can't wait to see it. they are still using the original mask, but it is all cut up. It is freaking off the bomb!!! The movies are like scary, but its like you are always looking behind you after watching them. i love michael he is like scary, but in the movies it is awesome when he walks like ya know all slow and fast at he same time and creepy. I think it is so freaking cool when he takes off his mask!!! I love him so much he is my favoritist person in the world...

love you,
taylor
