Considered by many to be Dario Argento's first masterpiece, Deep Red recalls his first hit, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. British star David Hemmings (Blow-Up) plays an American jazz pianist who witnesses a brutal, bloody murder from afar and turns detective to find the killer. Kooky Italian journalist Daria Nicolodi (Argento's wife and cowriter on Suspiria) joins him as comic relief and tepid romantic interest, but the real costar is Argento's high style: gliding camera, razor-sharp editing, and gorgeous but gruesome set pieces. The story is convoluted, to say the least--plotting was never Argento's strong suit and the unnecessary exposition often drags the film down--but his vivid, horrific imagery is perfect for a thriller driven by haunting memories. Deep Red was originally released in the U.S. in a severely cut version retitled The Hatchet Murders (odd since the killer uses a butcher's knife). Producer Bill Lustig has restored the film to its original two-hour-plus running time, though some scenes exist only with Italian-language soundtracks (which are subtitled). It's a bit jarring at first (it makes for an unintended joke when a man suddenly checks his hearing aid after a language switch), but it's the only way to see Argento's original cut. There's also a brief 25th anniversary documentary with Argento and cowriter Bernardino Zapponi, and the DVD offers a choice of English and Italian language versions. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars The first real Dario Argento film...........2007-06-18

To me, this is where Dario Argento's career really started. He had made 4 films prior to this (the "animal" trilogy, and a barely seen Western, The Five Days of Milan), but I never liked his early films (I saw The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Cat o' Nine Tails. Bird is decent, but rather boring. Cat is terrible, especially in its dubbed version). The amazing thing about Profondo Rosso (aka Deep Red...the original Italian title sounds so much better) is that even in its mutilated 98 minute version, it was still amazing (though incoherent) filmmaking. Essentially, the American distributor cut out 28 minutes of really important plot detail, but left most of the violence in the film. Now, Anchor Bay has given you the original film, and in the original Italian with English subtitles. The longer version is much more coherent, explaining the plotline and the motivations of the characters, and giving more of a role to Daria Niccolodi, Dario's girlfriend of 10 years. The music of Goblin (their 1st colloboration with Dario) is magnificent. It's just as good as their Suspiria soundtrack, and the fusion of Dario's cinematic sense and Goblin's music sense is one of the most fruitful colloborations in cinema history. The performances here are above average for a Dario film, with David Hemmings playing the usual English speaking artistic type getting caught up in a murder mystery (typical Argento plot). It's nice to see Argento's work restored, as almost EVERY film he did during his heyday was cut and sometimes renamed (for example, Phenomena was cut by 28 minutes and retitled Creepers, and Tenebrae was cut by 9 minutes and retitled Unsane). This was Dario's first masterpiece, and the beginning of a remarkable run for him up through his last great film, Opera. Many of Dario's films are really artistic and strikingly shot, something he's never really given credit for.

5 out of 5 stars Jaw Dropping.......2007-05-18

This is not a contradiction: While Susperia is in my opinion the best horror film ever made, making it the scariest movie Argento has ever made, I still think that Deep Red (Profondo Rosso) is Argento's masterpiece. Why? While Deep Red is not as scary as Susperia, it is a better movie. Deep Red wins my vote as the best giallo film of all time. Buy this film at once. It demands repeated viewings. In this giallo, a jazz pianist witnesses a murder from the street and, feeling heroic, rushes into the building in attempt to aid the woman in peril. He runs into an apartment decorated with an abundance of paintings, only to find that the women is already dead. What follows hinges mainly on what has become Argento's main plot device in giallo films, namely, a mystery created in the mind of the main character of the film as a result of the fallability of human memory. As one character in the film states, memory is like a cocktail, and sometimes the flavors of past events get mixed up, becoming indistinguishable from one another. The Bird with the Crystal Plummage, Susperia, and Sleepless, to name a few, all contained mysteries pertaining to inaccurate, imperfect, or even blatantly false recollections of events which have come to pass. In Deep Red the main character swears that a painting has been stolen from the apartment he rushed into. He vividly remembers seeing one that is no longer there. The police dismiss his claims, saying he's mistaken. But there his memory is, lingering, haunting him, compelling him to play detective, as he becomes obsessed with jogging his memory. The entire issue in this movie pertaining to what he actually saw in the apartment is handled by the director geniously, for you too also get to see what the main character does, and likely will also miss it. I will say no more on the matter; I do not want to spoil the effect. This film is repleat with Argento's signature touches, the mobile camera, the black-gloved killer, and a brilliant use of color. Critics have often come down on this film, failing to give it the respect it deserves. One reason, I would surmise, is that the film as a whole is a bit tarnished by the corny relationship between David and Argento's once wife, Daria. These brief scenes aside, many of the sequences of this film dazzle the viewer with their technical mastery. The scene when David Hemmings keeps playing the piano with one hand though he hears an intruder on the other side of the door is masterfully executed, as are David's excursions into the creepy house with a hidden room. The editing in the film is nothing short of brilliant, as when the protagonists enter the school toward the end of the film. The picture cuts to various scenes, including the image of a bathroom wall with the graffito 'kill your parents.' The soundtrack to this film is one of Goblin's best. For interested readers, this film is actually a remake of Michelangelo Antonioni's masterpiece Blow Up, which also starred David Hemmings. There Hemmings played a photographer who, after photographing scenes in a park, swears he captured a murder in one of his photos. Though most critics prefer Blow Up to Deep Red, I, like Argento, find Blow Up's surreal conclusion to be a tremendous let down, and personally find Deep Red to be the superior of the two films. (Blow Up was also remade by Brian DePalma as Blow Out.)

5 out of 5 stars good horror,classic giallo.......2007-05-12

excellent horror/giallo by dario argento.superb atmosphere, cinemaphotography, suspense, set piece work, good locations.personally i reckon this to be one of argentos best films along with 'suspiria'.compared to most other examples of the genre-great care and imagination has gone in to this one with great results.dvd quality is excellent with good subtitles(my preference when watching foreign films) and the film is of course completely uncut in widescreen.this is easily the best edition -can't see it being bettered.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic film... About the Blue Underground Release.......2007-05-11

This has always been one of my favourite Argento's. Stylish and clever with fantastic music, a wonderful atmosphere and some stunning set pieces. It also features (unusually for an Argento film, as he's not known for his patience with actors) a truly convincing performance by the main man, David Hemmings.

The Blue Underground edition is exactly the same print of the film as the Anchor Bay release (now out of print), which means it has sections that drop into Italian dialogue (some sections the English could not be found for, and some it was never recorded for as the scenes were never included in the international versions, only the Italian cut).
Whilst it is great to see the movie complete, it is very distracting to switch randomly and without warning between Italian language with subtitles and English without.. which leads to a temptation to watch the whole movie in Italian. Whilst this is usually a good idea with Argento's films, Hemming's performance in Deep Red is so subtle and nuanced that it is a great shame to diminish it by watching it with Italian dubbing. Dilema!!!

Anyway, the film is worth owning regardless of these frustrations. If you don't have the Anchor Bay version, I highly recommend you get this one (oh, and it has a great cover too!)

3 out of 5 stars Blue underground version.......2007-04-21

Decent film. The anchor bay version had italian audio on the restored scenes. It's kinda wierd because the film randomly breaks from english into italian. Did blue underground fix that on this disc?

3 out of 5 stars It's worth a try.......2007-01-21

I thought this the best Argento movie I've seen. It had an actual plot, was strikingly beautiful visually and had a leading man that I recognized and he was actually good. I found it in a dollar store, but we've paid more for Italian horror that wasn't nearly as good. I would say that it works better as a Hitchcockian style murder mystery than as a slasher/horror film...

3 out of 5 stars two landmark horror films in one double feature.......2007-06-24

Deep Red is the better of the two getting the three stars and Silent Night Bloody Night getting two stars. Silent Night Deadly Night is a bizarre horror film from the seventies. It stars the beautiful Mary Wornov who was one of Andy Warhol's Factory actresses. It concerns an abandoned mansion whose owner burned to death there one Christmas Eve. The mansion which has stood there abandoned for years is now being sold by the owner's grandson. This event prompts someone to escape from the local mental institution and kill anyone who sets foot in the deserted building and prevent anyone from either buying or selling it. The quality on the disc is poor for both features and since a large number of scenes of Silent Night take place in the dark this is an issue in many scenes as you can't make out what is happening. The film has some interesting performances among them John Carradine who speaks by ringing a desk clerk bell repeatedly. The end of the film which is the flashback scene is genuinely terrifying and disturbing. It tells the secret of the mansion and what really happened there years ago and it is filmed in sepia tone and the actors are all actors from Andy Warhol's Factory and the scene is very disturbing. A fun horror film that is a little slow at times but the ending is a good payoff. The second and better known film Deep Red is considered director Dario Argento's best film. It is certainly the template for many films that have followed it in terms of story and music. The electronic score by Goblin was an influence on the scores for some of John Carpenter's horror films. It stars David Hemmings as a jazz pianist who witnesses the murder of a psychic one night. After he rushes to the apartment to try to save her the police show up to question him as well as a photographer. The photographer is played by Daria Nicolodi who was Dario's wife and mother of his children. Together these two try to solve the murder. As they learn more and more about the people that may have been involved they are foiled in their efforts by the people conveniently being murdered before they can question them. I am not familiar with the giallo genre and assume that many of the more odd elements of the film are better understood by fans of the genre. For all the weirdness that Dario has put in the film there is no denying the use of music during the murder scenes and the fantastic camerawork that are very good direction. The final half hour when they find out who the killer is and the subsequent tracking down of the killer and the final murders redeems any slowness that has come before it. The slowness being the flirtation between David Hemmings and Daria Nicolodi. This element too has been used in countless other films. That is the best way to judge Deep Red as being one of the first films to deal with this subject matter and then you can see how so many other films have tried to copy it with varying degrees of success. This is a barebones version of it compared to the special edition with bonus features and a better transfer. Worth note though is that this is a widescreen transfer that while isn't terrible isn't great either, this is the full version of the film not the edited version. Cut versions run 96 minutes and this one clocks in at 126 minutes. This dvd has a low price and Silent Night is a fun film for horror fans but Deep Red is a very good film that is definitely worth seeing.

2 out of 5 stars Great Movies, Horrible DVD.......2005-08-24

Deep Red is a great movie, Silent Night Bloody Night is a campy classic. But, this double-sided DVD does both of them NO JUSTICE. Buy them separately. The DVD wasn't even worth the dollar I paid for it.

3 out of 5 stars Way, Way too expensive!.......2005-07-22

These movies might be good but I'll never know and neither will my friend who's a huge Argento fan. I was going to buy this for him for his birthday but no way can I drop 45 buck on this MFer. I'd swipe it up for 30 buck but 45 buck no way. Way way over priced.

4 out of 5 stars WARNING!!!! DVDS IN THIS SET ARE OF DIFFERING QUALITY!!!!!.......2004-12-28

Although both of these movies are extremely good with INCREDIBLE MUSIC, please be advised that both dvds are not of the same quality! DEEP RED is the better of the two, with anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for widescreen TVs), while TENEBRE simply contains the "matted" widescreen version (typical Anchor Bay cheesiness). If you have a widescreen TV or one with a widescreen "squeeze", you may want to wait for newer editions to eventually come out. If both movies were anamorphic, I would rate this collection a perfect 5 stars. Another ANCHOR BAY/ARGENTO warning: Bird With the Crystal Plumage may not play in older or cheaper DVD players. Two friends and myself purchased this DVD and have experienced the movie "freezing" at the same spot (the best shot of the movie, no less, at the bottom of the stairs). In my experience (and on the DVD player at the store where I returned it) the DVD would not play past this point. I think many are defective! Let the buyer beware!

5 out of 5 stars Bravo times two.......2004-09-15

Starring David Hemmings (who recently passed away) and Dario's real life squeeze Daria Nicolodi, "Deep Red" continually reminded me of his first picture, "The Bird With the Crystal Plumage" because Argento presents us with essentially the same set up. This time around we have American jazz musician Marcus Daly (Hemmings) witnessing the gruesome murder of his psychic neighbor in an apartment building. Intrigued, Daly starts to investigate the crime and soon runs into a chatty Italian journalist named Gianna (Nicolodi). Predictably, he soon runs into trouble with the local cops and comes to suspect that the murderer is looking to have a good old face-to-face meeting with the man who witnessed his bloody work. Daly must attempt to put the pieces of the crime together if he wishes to save his life, a process that becomes problematic as he deals with the blundering interference of Gianna. You know Daly will solve the crime by identifying the killer, and you know Argento will take you on the most roundabout way to that end, but that doesn't lessen the fun in getting there. That creepy, abandoned house where Daly must go to discover vital clues to the killer's identity towards the end is only the last eerie set piece in a film loaded with them. I now understand why "Deep Red" is a cult classic and considered one of the premier giallo films.

The gore here is standout stuff, and, let's face it, that's one thing we all want to see in an Argento film. There's a few stabbings, of course, but there are also scenes virtually insuring a good cringe or two. A face dunked in boiling water, a horrific death involving a head bashed against sharp furniture corners (!!), and a head crushed under a tire all take place in graphic, stomach churning close up. I noticed that Argento recycled a few of things seen here in "Sleepless," but that in no way mitigates the grisly effect of them in "Deep Red." Humorous scenes, such as Daly's attempts to adjust his body to the contours of Gianna's decrepit car, provide a necessary breather between gore sequences but the high sauce content in the movie still got under my skin. Moreover, Argento marries the atrocities with frequently clever clues that help move the plot along. For example, the scalding scene sees the victim using a finger to leave a message on the steamed up wall of the bathroom before death sets in. Obviously, for anyone to see the message again the bathroom must be filled with steam. Neat little tricks like this one make me want to hug Argento if I ever meet the guy because these flourishes make "Deep Red" light years better than most of the junk out there today.

I happen to think "Tenebrae" may well be the best Argento film I have seen, even better than his first wave of gialli. It's the story of Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa), a popular writer of disturbing novels who travels to Italy to promote his latest thriller. Unfortunately for Neal, and more so for several other people, a killer decides to imitate the murders laid out in the author's most recent book. It isn't too long before the local police, in the form of Detective Germani (Giuliano Gemma), make the connection between the homicides and Neal's book. With his assistant Anna (Daria Nicolodi), book agent Bullmer (John Saxon), and a young man named Gianni (Christian Borromeo) standing by his side, the popular novelist soon joins the investigation into these grisly crimes. And grisly they are as only Dario Argento can make them. We see throat slashings, stabbings, a hand liberated from a wrist, and other gooey surprises shot in the sort of alarming, extreme close up that is a trademark of this director's brand of cinematic carnage. "Tenebrae" constitutes one of Argento's most disturbingly violent escapades into the giallo genre. It is, fortunately, one of his most coherent films as well.

Neal continues to promote his book even as he helps the police in the hunt for the killer. He faces a slew of protests about the supposedly misogynistic, ultra violent content of his novels from an angry female protestor and from a smarmy television critic on one of those face-to-face talk shows. Both of Neal's critics perish horribly soon after (surprise, surprise), thus throwing some suspicion on the author himself as a prime suspect. Of course, many others could very well be the ones putting on the black gloves. The only real clue we get from Argento, if you can call it that, is a weird flashback of a young woman tormenting a boy with her red-heeled shoes. As creepy carnival style music plays throughout the flashback, we then see the focus shift to the killer stepping out from behind a hedgerow to stab the woman. What this memory means, and why we see it from the perspective of the killer, soon emerges as "Tenebrae" draws to its ultra shocking conclusion. And the conclusion is shocking, containing some of the most graphic gore I've seen as well as a truly gasp worthy revelation I won't elaborate on here except to say other films ("Nightmares in a Damaged Brain" comes to mind) have used it to great effect. "Tenebrae" is a real treat for the horror fan.

What are you waiting for? If you haven't spent any time with Argento, these two films offer the perfect introduction for the curious beginner. Old timers will just enjoy seeing them again. You get a bunch of extras on both of these discs, including commentaries, trailer, behind the scenes stuff, interviews, stills, and bios. You've got your marching orders, soldier. Now get going!

5 out of 5 stars 2 Argento Classics For The Price of 1!.......2003-10-18

Anchor Bay's Dario Argento Collection Volume 3 represents the best of the Italian Hitchcock's distinguished career in horror. First up, we have DEEP RED, his breakthrough. I love the way Argento throws a simple eyewitness (in this case, a Jazz pianist/music teacher) into the mystery. There is a detail of the murder that he witnesses that is like a splinter in his mind (a missing painting) and compels him to investigate the murder. First off, DEEP RED is brilliantly realized and scary in its structure and execution; even things that seem unrelated fit into the solution! I also enjoyed the scenes with David Hemmings (the pianist) and Daria Nicolodi (the reporter that is investigating the murder); not only do they have a terrific chemistry lacking in today's movies, but these moments actually allow you to relax and often laugh. Sure the language switches are annoying at first (at least subtitles are provided, and the original Italian dialogue track is included, in 5.1 no less), but at least it's uncut. DEEP RED (aka PROFUNDO ROSSO) is a definite must-watch!
TENEBRE is considered by some Argento fans to be his masterpiece, and it's easy to see why; I bet Stephen King has seen this movie and could relate to it. The title refers to a murder mystery novel that is a best-seller and is being promoted in Rome by its author, Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa). Anyway, someone is on a murderous rampage seemingly inspired by the book (in fact, the first victim has the pages of the book stuffed in her mouth as she is knifed). TENEBRE is rich in symbolism and style; just check out that photography! The ending is one of the greatest horror movie endings of all time! And again, another great performance by Daria Nicolodi as the author's friend; John Saxon steals it as Neal's agent. You have got to see this movie, it will blow you away!
This limited edition 2-pack is the best way to own Dario Argento's greatest achievements! Both films are light years beyond any horror film made before, between, or after them. This is Dario Argento at his best; HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
