Horror master John Carpenter offers up a triple treat with The Fog: Jamie Lee Curtis, Adrienne Barbeau, and Janet Leigh all in the same movie. As if that weren't enough, both John Houseman and Hal Holbrook make appearances, each clearly enjoying the novelty of being in a horror flick. The Fog opens just before the centennial celebration of the seaside town of Antonio Bay. Then the witching hour strikes, glowing fog rolls in, and all hell breaks loose. Carpenter wrote the script with producer Debra Hill, his collaborator on Halloween, and the two know their craft. It's a creepy story and a tight script, and, as in their previous effort, the audience gets to know the main characters a bit before they're put in danger. The movie also has a sly sense of humor: "Things seem to happen to me," says slasher vet Jamie Lee. "I'm bad luck." Barbeau is also obviously having a great time, sinking her teeth into her role as a frightened disc jockey watching the fog roll in from a lighthouse. The Fog offers a few shocks and plenty of good old-fashioned clammy chills. You'll never look at weather systems the same way again. --Ali Davis

The Fog of War, the movie that finally won Errol Morris the best documentary Oscar, is a spellbinder. Morris interviews Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and finds a uniquely unsettling viewpoint on much of 20th-century American history. Employing a ton of archival material, including LBJ's fascinating taped conversations from the Oval Office, Morris probes the reasons behind the U.S. commitment to the Vietnam War--and finds a depressingly inconsistent policy. McNamara himself emerges as--well, not exactly apologetic, but clearly haunted by the what-ifs of Vietnam. He also mulls the bombing of Japan in World War II and the Cuban Missile Crisis, raising more questions than he answers. The Fog of War has the usual inexorable Morris momentum, aided by an uneasy Philip Glass score. This movie provides a glimpse inside government. It also encourages skepticism about same. --Robert Horton

This is no movie...this is no documentary; however, you go face to face with one of the bloodiest butcher's in our history concerning 'the welfare' of our Armed Forces...it's the closet thing to a McNamara autobiography as he revels in introducing himself to the ordinary hard working American and the valiant troops who languished in Vietnam; truly, he now appears in a light colored trench/coat out of the fog and mist of the war years [WW2 thru Vietnam]...he is very amicable, cozy and almost human, while revealing momentous times that shine light on a 'different' Robert McNamara who was Secretary of Defense under Presidents: Kennedy-Johnson...precisely, he had the lives of every member in our fighting Armed Forces tightly in the grip of his blood/soaked hands...he was dicitorial/authoritive and only held accountable to 'his' President[s]...he relished his role of Sec of Defense and the custodian/ship of a new concept of how America will go to WAR from Vietnam right up into the Iraq war...full knowing what this 'US Military-Industrial Complex' is all encompassing...just prior to President Dwight Eisenhower's retirement, he warned the American people to be most wary of this exclusive 'Military-Industrial Complex'.....after a comprehensive education at University of California and later Harvard University, the top men of power seeked and desired McNamara's counsel; henceforth, he was with the elite that makes America march to their collective drums...I don't buy his tear-filled mea-culpa on film at all...not at all...I say every mud combatant/soldier, who suffered severely in the WAR in Vietnam [1962-1967] should be his judge, and you'll learn from their deprivations, and no chance to win the war...just how he was truly HATED [talk about another Martin Borman]...Bob, I suggest, you take your quest for an elite life, which you attained, now go, with hat in hand and pander your wares somewhere else...I'm never buying your revised/snake oil...good riddance!!.....SSGT CHRIS SARNO-USMC FMF

This brilliant series of interviews with Robert McNamara should be required viewing for *anyone* before he or she is authorized to venture an opinion regarding what America should or should not do with its power. I do not begin my review because of any clear sense of the virtue or villainy of Bob McNamara's legacy as president of the Ford Motor Company, Secretary of Defense under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and long-time president of the World Bank.

Far from it, the spendidly drawn impression is how dangerously concentrated power becomes in the hands of fragile, myopic, regular men and women who in many--most?--cases want to do the right thing.

McNamara's memory ranges from World War I to the extinction of River Blindness in Africa through the World Bank's efforts. For understandable reasons, the camera and the questions linger most on the Viet Nam era, for this is where McNamara took 'the world stage', as he puts it.

Clearly enamored of John Kennedy, McNamara had a more complex relationship with Johnson, whom he admired but with whom he came to disagree in a process that led to McNamara's firing just shortly before Johnson made his epic decision not to run for reelection.

As THE FOG OF WAR touches time and again upon the deliberations that framed the Bay of Pigs crisis and then the Southeast Asian war itself, one hears via the clarity of taped conversations how little we knew and, proverbially, how close we came to ultimate war.

McNamara has passionate remarks to offer on the very timely matter of taking America's strength into battle when we have failed to convince our allies of that course.

Kudos to McNamara for complicating his legacy even more by achieving astonshing things through some of the World Bank's better years.

Required viewing.

3 out of 5 stars The Mediocre Achievements of a Mediocre Man.......2007-05-02

What happens when supposedly great men, upon closer examination, turn out not to be so great, after all? What happens in this particular case is a piece of icon-washing fostered by Errol Morris who apparently couldn't think of a better subject to film a documentary about.

All the accolades regarding this film would lead one to believe that it is about a titanic human individual who achieved great things, but when one actually watches the film, one sees nothing of the sort. Robert McNamara, a man who, in early pictures and footage of himself, is so bursting with arrogance and self-importance that he all but glows, played Mephistopheles to Kennedy and Johnson up until about 1967. That is to say that he provided these men with war strategies and troops and generally brought about the means by way of which their wars could be fought.

Errol Morris is an expert filmmaker and, as usual, his film is graced with the hypnotic music of Philip Glass, whose soundtracks are all but indistinguishable from one another. Indeed, the soundtrack from Koyannisqatsi might have been substituted here to provide exactly the same effect. Morris's camera angles and editing are never boring, but this viewer does not share his fascination with his interview subject.

McNamara evinces guilt about his involvements in war and appears on the verge of tears in many scenes as he recalls difficult decisions made about the Vietnam war. But as the film winds down, it becomes evident that McNamara is proud of his "achievements," although it is difficult to see how sending 58,000 young Americans to their deaths can be regarded as an achievement to be proud of. McNamara would have been better off had he remained as the head of the Ford Motor Company. Perhaps then his "achievements" that he is so proud of might have really added up to something instead of a head full of phantom shadows and dead soldiers.

It is generally considered bad form to give low ratings to an Errol Morris film, and this viewer certainly agrees that he is a very good filmmaker, indeed. Unfortunately, here his choice of subject matter fails him, for McNamara is rarely insightful regarding his role as Secretary of Defense. One comes to the film expecting McNamara to shed light upon obscure happenings, or to reveal dark secrets about what went on behind the scenes, but no such luck. In effect, all McNamara can muster up is a half-hearted "that's the way it was." There are no insights on the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as the back of the DVD case promises, and the stunning revelations regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis amount to nothing more than that in those days, we actually came close to nuclear war and that it was only averted by sheer luck. Hmm. The film suffers throughout from this kind of glibness.

McNamara just isn't that interesting. Whatever his talents as a CEO, this is not a man given to insightful philosophical speculation. And it shows in the superficial comments that he makes about war being "just human nature."

Nice try, Mr. Morris. Next time, how about doing a film about somebody who really deserves the time and expense spent upon them?

5 out of 5 stars Excellente.......2007-04-06

If you're looking for a blind lashing out against American militarism, skip this movie. It's a look at the life of Robert McNamara, and along the way we're asked to look at warfare differently. It's Errol Morris at the top a' his game.

Though only a short subject, this groundbreaking documentary remains one of the most influential and powerful explorations of the Holocaust ever made. Director Alain Resnais bluntly presents an indictment not only of the Nazis but of the world community, and the film is all the more remarkable for its harsh judgment considering the time in which it was made, less than a decade after the end of the war, when questions of responsibility were not yet being addressed. Juxtaposing archival clips from the concentration camps across Germany and Poland with the present-day denials of the camps' existence, the film seeks to once and for all expose the horrifying truth of the Final Solution, as well as to address the continuing anti-Semitism and bigotry that existed long after the war's end. An invaluable resource and testament to history, this film was a profound influence on all films to address issues of the Holocaust, from Judgment at Nuremberg and Shoah to Schindler's List. Night and Fog remains an essential and indispensable document of the 20th century. --Robert Lane

Description

Ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz. One of the first cinematic reflections on the horrors of the Holocaust, Night and Fog (Nuit et Brouillard) contrasts the stillness of the abandoned camps' quiet, empty buildings with haunting wartime footage. With Night and Fog, Resnais investigates the cyclical nature of man's violence toward man and presents the unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again.

Not one of these reviews mentions the fact that the actual 'Night and Fog' operation by the Nazis was a completely seperate atrocity from the murder of the Jews; 'Nacht und Nebel' was an action implemented upon the Gentile populations of Europe for the sake of sheer terror; Thousands of civilians were kidnapped from their homes, murdered, and disposed of without a trace and without any publicity or notification just to keep the occupied populations in fear of the Germans.

5 out of 5 stars Barbaric Is Too Kind A Word To Use!.......2007-03-21

"Night and Fog," by Alain Resnais, is only 31 minutes long, but it gives the viewer enough images to haunt one for a long time. And we should never become so desensitized to these events that when we watch this film it just becomes another routine viewing of history. I don't need to see these images anymore, but they are a poignant reminder of a criminal regime whose obsessive attempts to reshape the world in their own twisted ideological mold led to the massive industrial murder of millions of people: And this should never be forgotten. Yes indeed, the history of history is terror.

This is not an easy film to watch. The cold and calculated mass-killing done with all the efficiency of modernity and a bureaucratic system to match is enough to make one sick. This is no Hollywood horror film. This is worse than anything Hollywood could ever conjure up. And the reality of this chapter in human history is in itself horrific in scope. I can assure you that you will not walk away from this film without feeling some sort of unpleasantness, and if anything, you will be horrified and shocked. And you should be.

I gave the title of my review to the words once uttered by my former professor, and noted Holocaust historian, Dr. Saul Friedlander. He was giving a lecture on the camp guards, when he walked away from the podium and muttered the words "Barbaric is too kind a word to use." The other students were busy writing their lecture notes, and he said it in a way that was not meant to be heard, unless one was close enough to hear him. And I heard him clearly. He lost both his parents at Auschwitz, and was himself in hiding in France. And these words have stayed with me for a long time, as have the images of this film.

Each of these lives both Jew and non-Jew alike, had meaning: They are not just numbers. Every one of these victims loved, and was in turn loved. They danced, joked, laughed, played, and worked. They felt sadness, happiness and tried to live a life that the criminal regime of Hitler and Nazi Germany took away from them. No, they should never be forgotten. And neither should the deeds and actions of the criminals who were responsible: Germans and non-Germans alike. We like to think that we have learned something from this horrible event. But after Cambodia and Rwanda, we still haven't learned a thing.

Jennifer Connelly followed up her Academy Award for A Beautiful Mind with this dark but moving story of small mistakes that escalate, with tragic necessity, to disaster. In House of Sand and Fog, Kathy (Connelly) gets evicted from her house for failing to pay a tax she never should have been charged in the first place. The house is swiftly put up for auction and bought by a former military officer from Iran named Behrani (Ben Kingsley, Sexy Beast). When legal efforts fail her, Kathy turns to a sympathetic cop (Ron Eldard, Bastard Out of Carolina), who wants out of a loveless marriage and who's willing to step over legal boundaries if it might give him a fresh start. Topnotch performances by the entire cast make House of Sand and Fog a compelling psychological drama; your sympathies will be pulled in all directions. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Ben Kingsley is awesome, the movie is not.......2007-06-13

What could have been a great movie turned out to be a nothing movie. Ben Kingsley is excellent and gives 110% in everything he does. Jennifer Connelly was fine too and the other actors did well.

The story itself is the problem. A boring story of a girl that is angry over losing her house. You wait and wait and wait for something exciting to happen if not at least something interesting.

It doesn't. Not until the end when Ben Kingsley and his wife commit suicide.
There, I just saved you some valuable cash. Now you owe me!

3 out of 5 stars Ben Kingsley's acting is wonderful but the rest of the movie is a real downer...................2007-05-26

Ben Kingsley's acting is remarkable in the film as he convincingly plays a former high ranking Iranian colonel dealing with a much lower style of living in the U.S. Jennifer Connelly is able to evoke the audience's sympathy despite her character being remarkably dumb and inept. The movie is compelling at first with an interesting and unique plot but the nightmarish ending made it difficult for me to find real enjoyment in the film. And the real estate legal situations as well as the colonel and his wife's sudden decision to take in and help the "angel bird" did not see realistic. I suppose there is a message to be learned from the movie in regards to what is really important in life but the main impression I took away from the film was the very tragic and rather graphic ending.

3 out of 5 stars Mostly Good for It's Performances.......2007-05-11

House of Sand and Fog is a hopeless but convincing tragedy about contested houses and broken pasts. It is morbid and profound enough to keep the riff raff away while also being flat enough to stray from any mainstream. I enjoyed the film for the same reasons critics probably enjoyed it. The film is carried by it's performances first and foremost and almost entirely. One of the more educated knocks on House of Sand and Fog is that the book is simply not really that transferrable toward the movie medium. I never read the book but the film and story stand enough to fuel three of the better performances of that year and also the greatest ensemble considering it's cost.

First is Ben Kingsley who plays Colonel Berani, a man who was forced to flee Iran during it's revolution. He sees a similar home in San Franscisco with regards to it's view (in Iran his home oversaw the Caspian Sea beautifully). This new home was recently repossessed from Kathy, played by the beautiful and talented Jennifer Connelly. I genuinely want Connelley to show her range in the future but House of Sand and Fog is not such an environment. Here, Jennifer plays a women ruined by Alcoholism and being ditched by her husband. She then sparks up an affair with a married police officer named Lester, played by Ron Eldred, and the undermining to throw Berani out of the house begins.

First time Director Vadim Perleman takes a subtle approach in the differences and similarities between the film's main characters. It was enough to make me walk away from the film wanting more but as if by osmosis the film won me over in perspective only days later. Watching the three main characters tangled in their flaws is enough to keep the film compelling. Berani is too proud and deaf to women, Kathy is too eager and manipulative and Lester is too idealistic and blinded by love. They are all ignorant to one another and completely void of empathy. Nadi is Berani's wife and she is played by the outstanding Shohreh Aghdashloo. Nadi is one of the only really likeable characters, because she is also the only one who sees the other's sides, but she is restrained by her submissiveness and her lack of English. Though heavy handed enough to obtain a brooding feeling that tragedy is inevitable, watching these characters fall is worth the wait if you appreciate this sort of film.

Kingsly proves his versatility once again and upstages Connelly in that regard by a long shot. Connelly really just invokes the roles she's been celebrated for before this movie, although she is still quite effective and it revisits her type-casts a bit deeper. It is Aghdashloo that truely stands out and I viewed this film and her performance after the hype with some degree of suspicion. She is excellent.

Overall, House of Sand and Fog is a downer. It wasn't as good as I hoped, given both the indie hype prior to it's release and the mainstream hype during and after it's release, but it was still pretty good. The cast alone makes the film worth watching but I would still imagine we will see more from Perleman in the future as well.

5 out of 5 stars A House Divided Will Fall, But This Film Soars!!! On my 10 best list!!!.......2007-04-28

This is one of those small arthouse-type films that few have heard about, but should certainly see. All too many reviewers on here have given away the entire plot of the film and that's unfortunate as this story is also something of a mystery. I will just tell why and how much I loved this film.

The acting is so powerful and believable that your heart will be tugged in every direction and you will find yourself so moved by the difficulties each character faces and how each can be both right and wrong at the same time. This story is about the gray areas in life as we rarely walk in absolute black and white. I have never witnessed such moving characters who, like in real-life, make mistakes, compound errors, attempt to improve their lives even when they don't know how, and lose what they most want to keep or regain.

The script has such believable dialogue that you will feel that you really know these characters. The direction is very unobtrusive. This film would have been disasterous in the hands of someone like Oliver Stone. The music is compelling and the photography captures the mood swings of the story and characters beautifully.

This is an awesome character-driven film that will haunt you long after it is over. Both my wife and I wept while watching it. It is an extremely emotional film and I couldn't more highly recommend it than I have.

5 out of 5 stars Affecting performances and an intriguing storyline.......2007-03-28

Amir Behrani (Ben Kingsley in an Oscar-nominated performance) is working two jobs, one as a road construction worker and the other as a clerk/manager in a convenience store. He is a meticulous man, a man of dignity and pride. He has a wife Nadi (Shohreh Aghdashloo) and a teenaged son. They immigrated to the US from Iran where he was a colonel in the air force. They had a house in the days of the Shan on the Caspian Sea that they have no longer.

One day Behrani sees an ad for a repossessed house up for auction. This is the house of the title. It is owned by Kathy Nicolo (Jennifer Connelly) and her brother. We see her asleep in the house, which has gone to some disrepair, dirty dishes in the sink, unopened mail on the living room floor. She is awakened by a phone call from her mother on the east coast. It's 6 a.m. Kathy seems hung over. Her mother is coming to visit in a couple of weeks. Kathy says her husband will be out of down. She says he is lying next to her now, asleep. However he isn't.

Kathy is in a bad way. She is a recovering alcoholic. We can imagine her husband left her because of her drinking. She is trying to quit smoking. And worse yet, there comes a banging on the door and she learns that the house is being taken from her for back taxes. Signs are plastered on the doors. A county sheriff Lester (Ron Eldard) is there to make her exit the premises.

We can see the clash of cultures coming: the proud, hard-working immigrant who is going to buy the house dirt cheap and then sell it for a profit, the careless and self-indulgent American who is going to go live in her car.

Sheriff Lester is the joker in the deck. He is bored with his wife, whom he married young after growing up with her. He immediately takes a fancy to Kathy, and we can see that he will be instrumental in trying to get the house back.

So this is the premise of the movie. There are some problems with this premise, but they are minor. Behrani buys the house for forty-some thousand dollars and puts it up for sale for an hundred and seventy-some thousand. These numbers are pathetically low for the time, the 1990s, and the location, the San Francisco Bay area. Kathy is left with nothing. However after the taxes are paid she should be getting what's left of the forty-thousand. The direction by Vidim Perelman in his debut glosses over this. Furthermore, Kathy should be suing the county since they are the ones who wrongfully assessed her for a business tax.

What makes this movie work is the fine storyline, adapted by Perelman from the novel by Andre Dubus III, and superior performances by Ben Kingsley, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Jennifer Connelly. Kingsley becomes the Iranian colonel in the most convincing manner. His motivations are clear and believable. His character is rounded and at once sympathetic and a bit off-putting. He is sexist and macho but at the same time civilized, compassionate and even admirable. Connelly, in her stringy hair and cheap cut offs becomes an injured and lost bird that has flown into this house that is no longer hers, this house that symbolizes both the American dream and the dream of the immigrant. I have seen her in a couple of other movies, most notably in A Beautiful Mind (2001). She is striking to look at, and here she proves she is a very talented actress. Her ability to turn her character from one that we are disposed to dislike to one for whom we feel great sympathy is part of what make this a superior film.

Aghdashloo, whose work got her a nomination for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in 2004, also gives a fine performance in a delicate role requiring understanding and compassion. It is perhaps fitting that she was born in Tehran and speaks Farsi. (Excellent casting overall, by the way.)

Also notable is the original score by James Horner, which also received an Oscar nomination.

This movie is not only a work of art, but is intriguingly plotted so that what develops and how it ends are not easily predicted. The ending for some may seem a bit stagy, but I believe that Kingsley sold it well, and considering his character, it is quite plausible.

Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce star in this 1939 adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's frequently filmed novel, and the result is one of the most atmospheric and purely enjoyable versions of The Hound of the Baskervilles. Except for minor changes, the script is true to Doyle's enthralling mystery about a centuries-long curse against heirs to the Baskerville estate, situated within the haunting and deadly Dartmoor in the southwest of England. With the arrival of a new master, Canadian Henry Baskerville (Richard Greene), Sherlock Holmes (Rathbone) and Dr. Watson (Bruce) are called upon to solve the strange case of the "gigantic hound" that may be readying to savage the poor fellow. Wonderful sets, crisp performances, and Rathbone's accessible but no-nonsense take on the Great Detective make this a real delight. Typical of the 20th Century Fox Holmes pictures, there's an in-joke, a final line of censor-defying dialogue alluding to Holmes's little problem with cocaine. --Tom Keogh

Description

The Hound Of The Baskervilles

The most celebrated tale of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's canon, `The Hound of the Baskervilles' is set in the Victorian Age and was originally released by Twentieth Century-Fox in 1939. It is the first of fourteen Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.

When Sir Charles Baskerville is killed outside of Baskerville Hall, his good friend Dr. Mortimer (Lionel Atwill) fears that the curse of the Baskervilles has struck once again. Mortimer enlists the help of Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone), before yet another Baskerville can succumb to the evil legend.

Sir Henry Baskerville (Richard Greene) arrives in London to claim his inheritance. Mortimer takes Sir Henry to 221b Baker Street and expresses his fear for Sir Henry's life. Baskerville soon learns that along with the grand mansion on the moor, comes a devilish curse, a curious butler (John Carradine) and a cast of bizarre neighbors.

Holmes, pressed with "other business," sends Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) to accompany Sir Henry to the dreary moor to protect the young Baskerville from the legend of the wicked hound. Of course, with danger afoot, Sherlock Holmes may not be so far from the scene as is assumed.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Version.......2007-06-27

Many remakes have been done of The Hound of the Baskervilles. None equal this version--not just because of Rathbone and Bruce, but because of the incredible supporting cast: Richard Greene, Wendy Barry, John Carradine, et al. The atmospherics are perfect; the dog is scary and the grimpen mire is practically a character in its own right. This is the Hound against which all others are measured.

Terror by Night is also excellent, if you don't mind the miniaturization scenes of the train, which are a tad cheesy.

5 out of 5 stars Hound of the Baskervilles.......2007-06-21

Arthur Conan Doyle's greatest creation--and the world's most famous detective-- comes to sparkling life in this chilling, quasi-supernatural whodunit, thanks to the wonderfully talented Basil Rathbone. Of course, there are snappy performances all around from an excellent supporting cast that includes Bruce, Greene, Lionel Atwill (as a family friend), John Carradine (as a queer butler), and Wendy Barrie (as Henry's love interest). Rathbone and Bruce's rapport, however, has come to overshadow all subsequent Holmes-Watson actor pairings. Lanfield's quick-paced "Hound" is one of their most thrilling outings (there are 13 in all!), especially with the foggy English moors providing a splendidly ominous atmosphere.

5 out of 5 stars Hound of the Baskervilles with Basil Rathbone.......2007-03-29

My favorite Sherlock Holmes story, family curse, hound from hell, an old family mansion, deserted moor, an escaped convict, and Sherlock Holmes and his faithful Watson, add a fireplace, and hot cup of tea or coco and you have your evenings entertainment. I prefer this movie over most of them (except for jeremy brett version). They made a couple of changes in the story deviating from the book, and it worked. I will always love Nigel Bruce as Watson, and Basil Rathbone as Holmes.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-01-11

We have not watched this DVD but have seen it before. We wanted it for our collection.

3 out of 5 stars The film that introduced Basil Rathbone in the part of Sherlock Holmes..........2007-01-02

To select just one representative Sherlock Holmes film from the hundred or so made since Sherlock Holmes Baffled is a virtual impossibility, especially as no one actor (including such famous talents as John Barrymore, Clive Brook and Raymond Massey) has yet managed to successfully transfer the true Holmesian character to the screen... But if one has to be singled out probably the best choice would be the 1939 version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles," the most famous of all Conan Doyle's long novels and the film that introduced Basil Rathbone in the part of Sherlock Holmes...

Although no less a critic than Graham Greene found Rathbone unacceptable, complaining of his good humor and general air of refreshing health, the tall, thin British born actor is still the man most people associate with the role... He played in 14 Holmes movies between 1939 and 1946, two "A" productions and twelve double features...

Set in the correct period, "The Hound of the Baskervilles" follows Conan Doyle closely including only one scene, a séance, not in the original story... Its opening sequence on a deserted moor with a man running in terror from the unseen beast and its climax with Holmes going out alone into the foggy night to track down the "Hell Hound" really catches the suspense and mystery of Conan Doyle's story...

The film is most impressive when it convincingly sketches in the streets and fashions of Edwardian London, a remarkable achievement when one considers that recreation of London and English settings has not been one of Hollywood's strongest points over the years...

The final curtain line makes it difficult to believe that the film was made in 1939 with all the restrictions and censorship of that period... References to Holmes' drug taking have rarely if ever been made in Holmes movies but in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" the great detective stalks out of the room calling to his ever faithful companion, "The needle, Watson, the needle."

1 out of 5 stars PRODUCT DETAILS: WHAT PRODUCT DETAILS?.......2004-05-15

How about including the names of the movies contained in this boxed set in your so-called "product details" ?

We all know that Woody Allan is virtually always "vaux le voyage", but the merest hint of the actual content would be useful here.

Bless you and may you have many children.

5 out of 5 stars Great selection of movies!.......2002-06-15

This box is a good collection of some of the most beautifull films of W. Allen. This features some of the best directions of melodramatic films of W. Allen.

If you are a fan of Woody A. buy it now. If you are one of those very few who never saw a film of Woody Allen, buy one of the films not on this box. You will be back later to buy the box. Trust me.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say?.......2002-03-02

The whole idea behind a Box Set, is to attract fans. So if you're not a Woody Allen sucker, you'll probably never come to this point of the navigation, specially reading reviews. The fact is, this Box Set comes with more "noire" films from Mr. Allen, not the best comedy, but some very good drama though. The Sets 1 and 3 are better. But what can I say? The worst Woody Allen movie deserves 4 stars and a half, but I could't figure out how to give them. So I gave it a five. You're his fan too, you understand me.

5 out of 5 stars Quit complaining........2001-10-22

I can't believe all the bad reviews this has gotten. This box doesn't hold a bad film, yet there's so many complaints about it not holding any comedy or being to serious or something. First off, "Another Woman" and "September" aren't really funny at all, but hey, they excellent anyways. And the other three, "Crimes and Misdemeanors", "Alice", and "Shadows and Fog", are essentially comedies! Sure, "Crimes..." has a deathly serious side, but really... does that matter? "Alice" is one of those movies you can't really have any complaints about. It's really fun to watch. The weakest film here is, true, "Shadows and Fog", but that does not by any circumstances mean it is a bad film. It has excellent cinematography and it is really funny at times. Definitely worth seeing, even if it is one of Woody's weakest films. All in all, you pretty much get the best of Woody Allen here. Really funny, funny and whimsical, funny and sad, deathly serious, and more deathly serious. A fine box set. -Randy

5 out of 5 stars With the Crowes it's about the music...as always.......2007-06-30

I laugh out loud when i read the reviews of anyone who says this sucks or it's not as good as it could have been. The Crowes put the music first! No big fanfare, no fireworks, no gimmicks! It could be said the Black Crowes are the opposite of Kiss. Both bands give you your moneys worth, but with the Crowes its the music. No spectacle, no posturing and best of all NO Pretense! This shows the band with their best line up at the top of their game. That being said, I would have prefered to watch the band during the extended jamms instead of them walking around town. Also, I would have liked to see a longer soundcheck...but those are small gripes because the rest of this DVD is just awesome classic rock done with a style and class most bands don't have a clue about. I've seen the Crowes live several times and with different members and I just have to say I'm totally impressed with this DVD...Crowes fans have been waiting a long time for this and we were not dissapointed...you can play this for your children(it's not angry or weird) and you could play it for you folks(they won't say 'what the hell is this?)...this is what music and watching music should be...REAL!

4 out of 5 stars Good Crowes Performance.......2006-11-05

This one is pretty straight forward - the band comes out, plays their set and then good night. The song selection was representative of the best of the albums with Mark Ford on guitar with a few extras and some from the first album. They did em pretty much note for note with a little jam band stuff in the middle of some songs. I could have lived without the montage segments durning the jams. The back stage extras were OK but not really worth revisiting. A few with Kate Hudson hanging out with the band. This is a good overview of the Black Crowes and a solid performance. I don't regret the purchase and have watched it many times over by this point, as I am a big fan of their music.

5 out of 5 stars Great live band captured........2006-09-25

The Black Crowes certainly never treaded any new territory, musically speaking...and they never claimed to. All they do is play great rock-n-roll, and they do it very well. This relatively inexpensive dvd captures them intimately. The sound is very good, and there are very few cheesy film effects in this dvd. What you get is a classic rock band performing their songs. No gimmicks. For $15 usd, you can't go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars If you are a Black Crowes fan, you will love this!.......2006-07-27

I was at this concert and couldn't wait unitl this DVD came out. The Fillmore is such an awesome venue and the concert was one of the best Black Crowes concerts I've ever been to. The setlist is great and to see them up close doing there're thing is very cool. Lots of shots of San Francisco. This is a great music DVD. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars well i knew it.......2006-07-26

well i knew it. first off, I like to LISTEN to this band. but in a concert, borrrrringggggggg. not much going on here, all just jammed on a small stage, plugging along.

And Chris, how DOES these guys get the babes? I have a cousin that looks pretty close to him, greasy hair beard and all. and my cousin sings kinda of, not even as good, but still, he is a real nice guy. and his chicks? haha, looks nothing like Goldies daughter! oh wait, he is middle class wages, yea like that has nothing to do with it! hahaha.

but anyway, glad I bought the dvd, just to see, even tho I had a feeling it was going to be boring no action like this. better on dvd money than concert money! music is cool tho, jam it when its on the radio

Listened with Sennheiser 595's, the best that I have found, had 555 for a couple years they are nice too, but cant touch 595's, pay the dif and see, er I mean hear.

From producer John Carpenter comes the all-new retelling of his terror classic, The Fog. Tom Welling (TV's Smallville), Maggie Grace (TV's Lost) and Selma Blair (Hellboy) star in this senses-shattering tale of demonic retribution, directed by Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata) and written by Cooper Layne. Trapped within an eerie mist, the residents of Antonio Bay have become the unwitting victims of a horrifying vengeance. One hundred years ago, a ship carrying lepers was purposely lured onto the rocky coastline and sunk, drowning all aboard. Now they're back, long-dead mariners who've waited a century for their revenge. Seeking out the decendents of those reponsible for their deaths, they lurk enshrouded within a supernatural fog of terror. Beware, any and all who stand in their way.

1 out of 5 stars A floating candy bar in the pool of life.......2007-06-13

Regardless of whether or not you liked the original The Fog by John Carpenter has nothing to do with this complete and total bowel movement of a remake.

Every single person in this movie performed some of the worst acting I have ever seen. Let us review the credits shall we -
Tom Welling (TV's Smallville), Maggie Grace (TV's Lost) and Selma Blair (Hellboy) and directed by Rupert Wainwright (Stigmata).

Smallville, Lost, Hellboy and Stigmata. Doesn't that just say it all? Kind of like the big yellow FALLING ROCKS! sign you see on dangerous rocky mountain passes.

Neither Tom Welling, Maggie Grace or Selma Blair can act their way out of wet paper sacks!

The Fog is a good story/plot done wrong by mediocre Hollywood imagination and mind-numbing acting talent. What could have been a standout, knock you over remake turned into what is found in most children's diapers.

1 out of 5 stars Leper love story!.......2007-06-03

This is not so much a bloodless horror movie but more a listless lepers love story that will haunt you long after the movie is over. A few characters, or character outlines are killed by evil CGI effects but true love, Leper love, wins the day. I'll wager a few gold doubloons that some less than promising movie careers died in the making of this nonsense. To say its bad is to do a disservice to the word bad. John Carpenter was a producer on this, for shame good sir, FOR SHAME!!! P.s check out the original movie, a more fitting tribute to producer Debra Hill, and avoid this rubbish like the lepers curse it is

5 out of 5 stars Scary.......2007-05-16

Love the move it keeps you on your feet. I hate the fog in ture life. But the move is great thank you

3 out of 5 stars The original is a little better.......2007-05-16

I consider the original version to be one of my all time favorites. I think this is a decent remake. It expands on the plot to provide a little more explanation of the curse that is the source of all the upheaval. Comparatively I also think the CGI was a bit overdone. The original had some great, convincing cinematography (especially for its time) and this newer version comes off as a bit fake. Given the choice I'd recommend watching both, but if its a case of either/or, stick with the original.

1 out of 5 stars Horror-able.......2007-04-21

This is one of the worst horror movies ever made. I was hoping all the characters were going to die. It made me sleepy.

Sherlock Holmes gets the Gothic treatment in this mix of mystery and supernatural horror from Britain's Hammer Films. Peter Cushing is perfectly cast as the great detective, the very embodiment of science and reason (which also made him a great Van Helsing in the Dracula series) in a case wound around a legacy of aristocratic cruelty and a devilish dog wandering the swampy moors. Christopher Lee is a less satisfying fit as the last of the Baskervilles, as he waffles between fear and apathetic disregard, but Andre Morell is a fine Dr. Watson and a far cry from Nigel Bruce's sweet bumbler from the Hollywood incarnation of the 1940s. Director Terence Fisher was Hammer's top stylist and the film drips with the mood of the moors, mist hanging in the air, the dying vegetation itself threatening to come to life and trap the next unwary traveler. --Sean Axmaker

Description

A fiendish evil lurks beneath the mist-shrouded cliffs of England's fabled moors. In the formof a hellish hound, it feeds upon the trembling flesh of the heirs of Baskerville Hall. But before this savage beast can sink its teeth into the newest lord of the manor, it must pit its vicious fangs against the searing intellect of the most powerful foe it has ever encounteredthe incomparable Sherlock Holmes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Let's scare Christopher Lee to death.......2007-05-26

This is an excellent version of the old Sherlock Holmes tale. It doesn't follow the book exactly but most of the additions work. We must remember, in this day when the Holmes stories are revered by many as great literature, that the author, Arthur Conan Doyle, never really took them seriously, Despised the charactor, Sherlock Holmes, and tried to kill him off at the earliest opportunity.
So regarding the film as a story loosely based on the short story it comes off as excellent entertainment.
Also worth the price is the commentary by Christopher Lee, describing his part in the making of the movie and the reading of the introductory chapter of the story, also by Mr Lee.
Lee and Cushing make up one of the great teams in English Melodrama. The commentaries in this disk give us a short but interesting glimpse of their real characters, from Mr Lees fear of spiders to mr Cushings love of cartoon characters.

3 out of 5 stars An absolute disappointment.......2007-02-10

I can't find the words to state how I was frustrated when I watched this movie. I had not kept my expectations too high, but this movie terribly strays from the original novel, ending up with a monotonous and tedious story that has nothing to do with the genuine "The Hound of the Baskervilles". For instance, what the hell did that tarantula, which had been added to the plot to arouse suspicion, have to do with the England in the early 90s?
I think they should have been faithful to the original story, which could have brought about an utterly more thrilling and mysterious movie than this version. What I can finally say about this movie is that the investmend made on this lavishly-produced blockbuster should not have been wasted with such a weak plot that unnecessarily strayed from the original story.

4 out of 5 stars What's Up, Holmes?.......2006-11-19

A very good movie here. Whether you've read the book or not, this is some good stuff. Some of those who really love the book have issues with changes in the film, but what else is new, eh? For the first hour, the movie sticks with the book rather well. Some corners are cut and a few minor changes to zoom the pace along, but it still keeps the important points of the novel. It's a little past the hour mark where things start to stray from the source material on a bigger scale. It may have some folks scratching their heads and saying, "why did they even bother changing that?" It seems like it would have been easier to just keep with the book, but Hammer's adaptations have always been known to mess with the book. Horror Of Dracula's a great example, but most agree that the film didn't suffer for it. Hammer's pretty forgivable for changing everything, and that's probably coz their movies are so friggin cool. The Hound Of The Baskervilles is no exception. Once again Peter Cushing is completely incapable of giving a bad performance, and makes a very convincing Sherlock Holmes. The rest of the cast is great as well except the guy who plays Stapleton. He's made too shady and sinister, and too obvious a culprit. Quite opposite of how he was portrayed in the book, but then again that goes back to what I said earlier. Anyhow, this sucker is highly recommended to Hammer fans, and even Doyle fans. The Doyle fans may be a bit upset with the adaptation, but damn it, it's worth it to watch Cushing.

5 out of 5 stars Hammer's Holmes - a joy.......2006-09-06

After great success adapting Frankenstein and Dracula to the screen, the great House of Hammer turned its hand to Conan Doyle's classic mystery.

So many things to commend the film, although best of all is Peter Cushing's performance as Holmes. Cushing is an actor I could watch in anything; he always invests his characters with little eccentricities and mannerisms; and his Holmes is no exception. Brilliant.

Morell and Lee give sturdy support, and I also really enjoyed David Oxley's brief appearance as Sir Hugo Baskerville. He gives a really weighty, full-blooded performance; I shiver as the camera zooms in on his furious features and he declares angrily, "Release the hounds!"

Jack Asher's lush colour photography is another reason to enjoy this film. Hammer sacked him a few films later as his methods were expensive, and it is not hard to see why - he fills the screen with all kinds of fantastic hues, and creates a wonderful atmosphere.

The print could do with restoration one of these days, but other than that, a definite must-buy for the Hammer enthusiast.

4 out of 5 stars a great hound.......2006-06-21

Even though I liked this movie alot, it is not really that closely based on the book. Finding Horror of Dracula boring I decided to watch this one. Peter Cushing is a good actor for the role he was given. Chistopher Lee also played a great Sir Henry. It is the best Hammer film I've seen!

4 out of 5 stars CLASSIC CREEPY CHILLER! AVOID THE REMAKE!.......2007-05-08

This is a very good ghost story from the the man who gave us "Halloween" and "The Thing" remake. It's amazing how effective some green lights and a fog machine can generate more chills than the over blown and boring remake which cost 100 times the money to make. This is a good movie to watch on Halloween or any late night with the lights turned off! I own the original release with the green cover and it is the one you want to buy if you can find it. The later one with the blue cover is the same with some added lame trailers for the remake.

3 out of 5 stars That Sound.......2007-05-07

It wasn't so much the fog itself but that sound that accompanied what was in the fog. Good movie for children's sleep overs - since they do not go to sleep anyhow. Good story line, good acting and interesting characters.

4 out of 5 stars The FOG.......2007-05-06

This is the older version of this film and my husband says it is much better than the remake, thus his request that I get the old version for him. I guess it is good. He watches it often.

3 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-02

I really liked this movie with the doc. I felt I was taken through the film makers thought process and the commentary really goes into depth. A disturbing film. Good reasons to get the special edition.

1 out of 5 stars HA HA! This must be a joke!!.......2006-12-04

What kind of movie is this suppose to be, this was pointless, and what did the ghosts want from the people, they got the gold, but why did they kill the guy at the end? There wasn't enough of Jamie's part, and you don't even get to see how the ghosts look like, it's all darkness, you couldn't see anything, except you see that one ghost had green skin and worms on it. And the fog looked sooo fake! What kind of fog would glow? It's sooo easy what it is, of course it is gas, what kind of fog would easily go under doors? And fogs aren't that thick! As the first one who thinks that this movie totally sucked! I would say everybody who thinks this movie is awesome, there is something wrong with you. This is 2006, we're not back in 1980!

Like Gattaca did before it, Code 46 extrapolates from the present to posit a chilling, dystopian look at our genetically regimented future. In the corporate-controlled, near-future scenario presented by prolific director Michael Winterbottom and his regular screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce, nations and languages have merged to form a polyglot society in which genetic imperfections are avoided by the strict enforcement of Code 46, which prohibits sex between people who share 100%, 50%, or even 25% matching DNA. As an insurance-fraud investigator in Shanghai to investigate the issuance of forged passports (a major offense in an overcrowded world), Tim Robbins meets his prime suspect (Samantha Morton, echoing her role in Minority Report), and their violation of Code 46 has tragic and ultimately dehumanizing repercussions. Fascinating as a "what-if" scenario, Winterbottom's film is more successful as a melancholy mood-piece than a science-fiction tale. While the plot and characters suffer from occasionally vague definition, Code 46 offers a fascinating study of human longing in an age of oppressive globalization. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars It's about more than emotion vs. science.......2007-06-10

I saw this movie some years ago and liked it a lot. What I remember most about it is something that is not mentioned in the last ten or so reviews: that it is not only government that has taken away liberties in this dystopian world, but also, and critically, private corporations.

Every significant movement in this future is sanctioned by insurance companies ("do you have cover?"). If you don't have coverage (i.e. insurance coverage) for your trip to the grocery, you can't go. (the papelles were proof of cover). In this way, the people have signed away, contractually, a most basic civil liberty, privacy and the freedom to move about without being monitored.

Of course there's the sociological/scientific foundation or justification for this in the story, but what remained in my memory is how this apparently came to be in a western, essentially democratic world. That's what stuck with me in this movie and it's an important concept for people to be aware of. You have liberties. Don't just give them away for sake of convenience.

4 out of 5 stars intriguing.......2007-01-04

I really had no idea what to make of this film after seeing the trailer, but I thought the premise sounded intriguing.

For the first half hour or so, I was starting to wonder if an intriguing premise was all the film had. Just because it was sci-fi, I expected some action and excitement, but this film had more than that to offer. Although there was not a great chase scene or any gunfights (as Hollywood has led us to believe all good sci-fi movies should have), the film gave me a lot more to think about than any action-packed sci-fi film. And, if you really get into the film (as I did), there is some suspense towards the end.

I can't resist comparing it to Gattaca, in that it deals more with ethical situations in a futuristic world. Although it was a little slow in parts and the pairing of Robbins and Morton is a little unsettling, I loved this movie. The little details, like the way languages had converged, give the viewer something to think about during the slower parts of this brilliant film. Although the romantic pairing was awkward, I think both actors performed quite well in general. Also, the soundtrack complements the futuristic perfectly.

If you like to think, watch Code 46. If you're looking for a Will Smith style sci-fi blockbuster, keep looking.

4 out of 5 stars Mesmerising, bleak .......2006-12-08

This is a mesmering film, mainly because of the way it is shot, and the music. Yes, an ambient film, but that does it less justice than it deserves. Robbins is ok, wooden but that's his character, as the girl says at some point, he definitely risks having a good time.. and who are we to question their chemistry? This is a post-global warming world, bleak cityscapes, brilliantly filmed, and quite skilfully raises interesting and universal questions about relationships through the plot.. for example, why are people attracted to some particular people and not to others?? What strange mix produces instant recognition among strangers?? What do men see in women, and vice versa? Despite the plot issues which critical reviewers have pointed out, I am inclined to give this movie the benefit of the doubt, mainly because it is hard to forget. The only flaw is Samantha Morton's last line, which was totally unnecessary. Overall, a brilliant film. Perhaps not a GREAT film, but brilliant in the visual and auditory sense, combining just the right elements of raw realistic landscape with a sense of aesthetic elegance. Intense!!

3 out of 5 stars Just ok, good concept, just didn't capture my attention........2006-11-20

As the reviewer prior to me mentions, I guess they ran out of birth control in 2050, but I guess we could write that off as "love". Point number 2, he goes back to his lover even after finding out that they are genetically related...esentially she could be his mom according to the movie...AAAAAAHHHHHHHH...EEEEWWWW!!!!! Screams odipus rex, and inbreeding. He has the "Arkansas" genetic code, or potentially the appalatian country gentic code. Tim robbins did a decent job in this movie, the only big name in it. Bottom line, in a world of genetically engineered people, You should be cautious if the gene pool is small, either that or just completely lack morals. A movie you might rent, but not a must.

3 out of 5 stars no birth control in 2050.......2006-11-19

jeez, here's a solution- liason, don't breed. if the future can give you an empathy virus, learn a language through a virus, etc., they can do contraception through a virus while you want to be with the woman who is your mom's clone.

nice music though, great scenery.
