On regular television, punctuated by frenetic commercials, the leisurely pace of the horror miniseries Rose Red probably felt grueling; but on its own terms, the effect is like settling into a long book full of detail--a book not unlike those of Stephen King, who wrote the script. The story (about a researcher into the paranormal who takes a team of psychics into a haunted house) recycles themes that King has used before--a telekinetic girl, a house with its own consciousness--but for his fans, the familiarity is probably comfortable and even enjoyable. The cast (including Nancy Travis, Julian Sands, and Melanie Lynsky from Heavenly Creatures) give committed performances, and the special effects are television-grade but used pretty well. Most of it doesn't make much sense, but at its best Rose Red is absurd and creepy at the same time. --Bret Fetzer

I've always enjoyed "Rose Red" when it was aired on t.v. I have been a Stephen King fan for years. When I found the movie on DVD at such a great rate, I couldn't pass. It's great to be able to watch a "mini-series" without having to deal with the commercials.

No More Haunted Houses for Me........2007-05-18

I love haunted houses during Halloween and everything scarey that goes bump in the night during that particular time of the year. After revisiting Rose Red, forget about it. I would never get up the nerve to visit that creepy house. That's one house I would avoid like the plague.

I watched Rose Red, the mini-series, when it was on TV and loved it. I hated the breaks in it though. I always wanted more and hated waiting on the next episode. That's what is great about the DVD, you can actually sit down and watch the entire movie with no interruptions. Granted, it's over four hours long, but that's what pause buttons are for.

Stephen King is the best. I loved this creepy, scarey, way out there haunted house movie!

Great Movie.......2007-05-14

I don't know what to say about this movie, except that I enjoyed it. The interaction between the characters ran true to life.

About six people are invited to go to a house named "Rose Red," which is supposed to be a dead cell of psychic phenomena. They soon discover it's not really dead, it's just been in a coma for years. It slowly comes to life and... well you just have to see for yourself.

I did find some of the characters more believable than others, the psychics in particular were believable. The boyfriend/girlfriend relationship between Nancy Travis' character and the young fellow who played the boyfriend lacked a certain chemistry, but that could have been because she was somewhat obsessed with Rose Red.

Some of Stephen King's BEST!.......2007-05-07

As a die-hard Stephen King fan, I've seen everything he's ever done and this is by far one of THE BEST! The man just has a way of taking even the most sacred of things like the safety you feel in your own home and turning it against you! You won't want to walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night in the dark ever again after watching this!

Don't be hoodwinked.......2007-02-07

I was amazed at how many big name movie stars are in this made for DVD musical. The only decent song in the whole show is one borrowed from the 60's/70s rock group Sam the Sham and the Pharohs. If you wish your children watching other children spitting on adults as sport then this is the movie for you. There are other instances that I found disgusting. While this is an updated version of LIttle Red Riding Hood, I would not recommend this for 12 and under. Young teens will find the spitting and other vulgarities humerous, I'm sure.

Delightfully funny and charming and not too scary!.......2007-01-30

My almost four year old granddaughter picked this film as she already knew the story of Little Red Riding Hood from her mom and dad. I was a little concerned it might be too scary as it is PG but I should have realized that she was able to handle it very well.

The wolf is a werewolf. Lainie Kazan is the grandmother and is reading the story to her grandchildren. Lainie is wonderful in this!! If you are over 50 you may remember her singing on the Mike Douglas Show or on Ed Sullivan.

While the wolf swallows people whole, it is done by special effects that make it look cartoonish thus not scaring even my granddaughter! She really loved the whole film and was very enthusiastically telling her aunt, one of my other daughters, how good it was!!

If you have a mature preschooler who understands pretend and cartoon violence, they will enjoy this as the singing and fun stuff are hilarious. There is a precarious situation for the two kids in the film but even that is broken by humor and turning out not to be as dangerous as it looks. Otherwise I would recommend the viewing be by at least 5 or 6 year olds.

This movie is so entertaining I watch it with my children every time they put it on. We quote it, and sing along all the time. I rented it and my 4, and 2 year old girls watched it so much i had to buy it.

I bought the DVD for my daughter's 7th birthday. Both she and my 5yr old love the movie. They sing the songs from it all day long.

I had been looking forward to a DVD version of the Red Skelton TV specials, yet I'm disappointed that these are the shortened (edited for commercial & announcement time) versions which have several sections of each program removed, making them about 15 mins. shorter than the full (live performance) VHS tape releases. The quality of the video is acceptable, however, and is well worth getting if you don't already own the VHS tapes of the TV specials ... (just can't understand why the publisher didn't put the full versions in the collection ... probably cheaper this way ...)

ADDICTED TO BLOOD.......2006-01-16

One has to give credit for this movie's plot: vampirism is a viral infection, and once infected, one becomes bloodthirsty. However, the execution of the film doesn't really do anything with its plot. Andrew Stevens (THE FURY) stars as Owen Urban, a brilliant young maverick scientist who is working on creating powerful enzymes. Christopher Plummer is an infected scientific genius who runs a powerful company and he wants Stevens to help him find an antidote for the vampiric virus. Kim Coates is swarthy as always as a particularly gruesome vampire, who can't quite satiate his thirst. And then comes Heather Thomas (remember her from THE FALL GUY?), a sexy volunteer at the lab who finds herself infected when an inmate bites her leg. Thomas' performance as the infected titular character turns into a slutty bloodthirsty vixen and her performance is sooo bad, it's hilarious. Plummer should be ashamed of himself for doing this role. The movie also suffers from a very weak ending with no real resolution. Filmed in 1990, this loser spawned a 1997 sequel, but don't let that convince you this one's a winner.

Stephen King Collector Set.......2003-04-09

I just recently bought this DVD mainly for Rose Red and Storm of the Century. Two of King's newer Made for TV mini-series. These are definately two of his best and most watched series.

I only gave this product a 2 because the Dead Zone and Tommyknockers just don't deliver. Don't get me wrong, I love USA's Dead Zone series but this is only the pilot epsiode. I'd rather buy the complete first season. The glimpse of 2nd season special feature was only about 3 minutes long and didn't give any good details.

Then the Tommyknocker fiasco. I don't know about anyone else but I had problems with my copy. The sound and audio does not match on screen. You see the actors talking but you have to wait a half second to a full second before their lips move. Pretty bad. And of course I couldn't exchange it for another copy since I had already taken it out of the plastic. What a bummer.

Other than that, Rose Red and Storm of the Century are worth buying this. Give me what I want and I'll go away. hahaha. LEGION

As a young child, Rebecca Hoffman (played by Academy Award® winner Mercedes Ruehl) was raised by a loving and caring family, knowing she was adopted.

Following her parents' deaths, Rebecca begins a search for her natural family. She is contacted by a Navajo woman looking for her own siblings, who were stolen from her mother at birth. As the two women talk, they suddenly realize they are sisters and that Becks has found her birth family! Excitedly, Rebecca decides to take her children to meet her family on the reservation.
They are welcomed with opened arms, and begins learning the language and traditions of their rich ancestry. Her husband (Jamey Sheridan), however, is branded an outsider and has difficulty becoming accepted as a part of the Navajo community. As the differences between the two cultures come to the surface, the family discovers a commitment to each other that runs deeper than the circumstances and a heritage that captivates their hearts.

Back to Navajoland........2007-06-20

This is a good story, with much depth. About a womam who finds out where she finally belongs, and convinces her husband and children to adapt to their new found family, her Navajo family, which they do eventually,after many setbacks and heartsearching. Beautiful scenery, which does look like the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. Hopefully it is. I enjoyed this dvd very much. M.O.Australia.

A movie you will never forget...........2007-04-10

This is probably the best Native American movie I have ever watched. The story is so true of the things that happen even today, to the Indians. Heart wrenching to the core, you will cry as you watch this movie again and again. I can certainly identify with "Odette Marie". A movie filled with love, and sorrow yet so much truth, you can't help but feel the pain and joy of these precious people. For me, this is an Academy Award Winner Movie! Thank you to the people that made it!

This is a very heart warming movie about coming home. It reinforces the strong family bonds even through years of separation. It explores the need to stand up against unhealthy traditions in a changing world, as well as, traditions which can help define who we are in an ever changing world.

Adopted by a middle aged Jewish couple and doted on by her mother young Rebecca Hoffman leads a conventional life. Then her mother dies and her father remarries. In his new marriage there is no room for Rebecca. She is one to be tolerated. She no longer has a home. Years later Rebecca searches for her birth parents and comes to the realization that she is not white nor Jewish. Rebecca is Navajo.

Lost Child is a film based on the the autobiography, Looking For Lost Bird, by Yvette Melanson. In this picture we see the life of a child stolen from her birth parents and made to assume a new identity. Her adoptive father's reluctance to have her, her feeling of isolation and her quest to find her identity is both moving and tragic as we see a young woman so far from her home.

Mercedes Ruehl plays a sensitive and savy Rebecca who tries so hard to be accepted by her adoptive father. Her discovery of her Navajo roots gives her comfort and a sense of completion. Yet, she too and her family undergo some heartaches and challenges as she returns home. This movie shows the hope of a mother seeking a reunion of her children. We witness the reintergration of a woman back to her heritage. We also see the ugly side of cultural prejudice as her daughters attempt to fit in with their new family and culture.

I was very disappointed to see that this DVD was not closed-captioned. Your Product Details stated that this DVD was closed-captioned and it was not. Being deaf this is very important to me.

The King Of Laughter?.......2005-05-25

It's True Red Skelton is "The King Of Laughter." He is one of the most funniest man on this earth. His character's are so histaricall. I Love Freddie The Freeloader, Cauliflower McPugg & Deadeye. This is a good set.

I love this set of DVDs. There are about a dozen episodes that seem to have been realized on numerous collections, I myself have wound up with about three copies of each of these, but this set is all new and previously unavailable.

My only wish is that it was longer. Eight hours seems to pass in seconds when watching this collection.

Great set... And a lesson learned as well..........2003-03-27

First off let me say that I didn't buy this from Amazon.com... I purchased it off of a discount rack at a retail store. Lo and behold, when I get home and look it up I had paid 20% more than I would have if I had ordered it here... That'll teach me.

Anyhow, as for the DVD set, it's great for fans of Red Skelton, and contains just about all of his classic characters (except for the Mean Widdle Kid). The episodes are chock full of guest stars (Walt Disney, Bing Crosby, and Judy Garland pop up in one episode alone!), and the commercials and sponsor's ad segments have been all but deleted from the show (to some a disappointment, but to me it makes the shows flow better)

My main complaint is regarding the picture quality of the episodes. I realize that some of these episodes date back to the early fifties, but more than half of the episodes on the second disc are so dark you can't see what's going on at all! The Christmas episode was the worst, forcing me to turn up the brightness just to watch it.

But, I suppose I can't complain. You get a dozen twenty-minute or so episodes of great comedy, complete with the live-TV screw-ups and adlibs (my favorite being the episode guest starring Vincent Price and Jackie Coogan called 'Painting', where they take turns upstaging Red, much to his chagrin)

I would highly recommend this DVD set, despite its drawbacks.
