Writer-director Sam Raimi's extremely stylized, blood-soaked follow-up to his creepy Evil Dead isn't really a sequel; rather, it's a remake on a better budget. It also isn't really a horror film (though there are plenty of decapitations, zombies, supernatural demons, and gore) as much as it is a hilarious, sophisticated slapstick send-up of the terror genre. Raimi takes every horror convention that exists and exaggerates it with mind-blowing special effects, crossed with mocking Three Stooges humor. The plot alone is a genre cliché right out of any number of horror films. Several teens (including our hero, Ash, played by Bruce Campbell in a manic tour-de-force of physical comedy) visit a broken-down cottage in the woods--miles from civilization--find a copy of the Book of the Dead, and unleash supernatural powers that gut every character in sight. All, that is, except Ash, who takes this very personally and spends much of the of the film getting his head smashed while battling the unseen forces. Raimi uses this bare-bones story as a stage to showcase dazzling special effects and eye-popping visuals, including some of the most spectacular point-of-view Steadicam work ever (done by Peter Deming). Although it went unnoticed in the theaters, the film has since become an influential cult-video favorite, paving the way for over-the-top comic gross-out films like Peter Jackson's Dead Alive. --Dave McCoy

A Classic.......2007-06-17
This is one of the best films ever made.
I should end the review there, but I guess I'll add a few other remarks, since that line alone would strike many as preposterous. Ok, first I should clarify: this is one of the best films ever made if you like the horror genre (and especially the comedy-horror sub-genre). Obviously if you hate horror films you won't think this is very good. That's fine. Usually when I see those "Greatest 100 movies" type lists, I don't like more than 2 or 3 on the entire list. Everyone has an opinion, and opinions are of necessity subjective. So if you don't like horror... run from this page, run very quickly.
Still here? Great! Anyway, I'm not going to go over all the great stuff in the film, most people have covered that pretty well. There's gore, there's slapstick, there's a ton of sight gags and wonderfully corny lines and catch phrases. It also has some interesting characters, especially the heroic fool Ash. This is just a damn fine movie.
The packaging is certainly... interesting. The artwork inside is nice, though a depiction of the skull on the original cover would have been nice (especially since there are two blank pages). The commentary is great, with lots of entertaining stories, tons of insights and things to watch for in the movie, and some bad jokes (as one would expect). I wish they would have added another commentary or two, as there seems to be (based on what I've read) quite a bit more that could be said about this film, but I guess one will have to do. The other extras were also pretty interesting, with even the picture section (a narrated slide show) being engaging, which is a first.
excelent edition!.......2007-05-29
Hola. Este dvd de evil dead 2 es altamente recomendable para cualquier fan de los DVDS o cualquier fan de EVIL DEAD. Es un lujazo de edicion y se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo.
Absolute Comedy/Horror Standard.......2007-05-23
Allow me to preface this review with a helpful fact. A few years back when Spin Magazine was writing about the films they felt were the greatest of the 20th century, they chose to include Sam Raimi's sequel to his very first film; which was a small independent horror called The Evil Dead. The Evil Dead was a great film in it's own right, however, the editors at Spin wanted to give Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn the recognition they felt it deserved. So they placed it at the top of their list...that's right, they felt that it is, in fact, the single greatest cinematic achievement of the 20th century.
Evil Dead 2 follows Ash Williams and his girlfriend into a small creepy Michigan cottage where they stumble upon some recordings that contain readings from an ancient relic called the book of the dead, and by playing these recordings they unleash demonic supernatural forces that quickly haunt and possess everything from the trees outside and Popeye's lamp to Ash's hand and his girlfriend's severed head. The shenanigans unfold and Ash is more game than perhaps anyone to take on these evil forces as best as he can, but some sort of defeat is consistently inevitable.
As a reader I hope you are not anticipating my rebuttal to Spin Magazine here. I just so happen to concur 100% with Spin's gutsy assertion. On the surface of Evil Dead 2, we are seeing vintage 80s shock horror but it certainly isn't presented deeply enough to qualify amongst the failures within that genre. Evil Dead 2 is microcosmically structured like classic slapstick and macrocosmically it functions as pure satire. In this sense it's budget is used firmly to it's advantage and runs together with the theme of making a select audience laugh, first and foremost. Those who are both distinctly either disturbed by gore or preoccupied by gore as a strength in horror, should take keen note that gore in this film is applied almost exclusively for physical slapstick comedy. Those who hate gore will hate it here and those who love to be immersed in gore may not understand or appreciate it's use in Evil Dead 2.
We get to see a chubby fruit cellar witch's soul-swallowing head extend via shoddy stop-motion effects. We get to see an eyeball pop out of her head and shoot across the room into some chick's mouth. We get so see blood spray humorously and pretty consistently out of the walls and floors of the cottage. We get to see Ash fight his hand, cut it off, and add a chainsaw to where his hand once was. We get to see him kill his girlfriend and fight both her severed head and headless body in a tool shed at the same time. We get to see Ash get clumsily chased around the house by a force of evil we never see. We also get to see the volume of slapstick comedy increase as the film goes on and finally we get to see a conclusion that still makes me kind of wish they never made a sequel (even though Army of Darkness is in and of itself a very good movie).
Evil Dead 2 may require a deeper degree of movie history appreciation, perhaps more specifically to exploitation and horror films. I know I sound like a movie snob saying that but the film does offer some fun and fitting tributes or references to past films. I think it is definitely fair to say that Raimi has a great appreciation for movies in general and we can plainly see that he has so much fun making them. Evil Dead 2 for me is fun, affable, and carefree; it is all the things it shouldn't be on it's surface, and it is perfect for that fact alone.
brillant film funny as hell.......2007-05-07
great film very hard to get on r2 to in uk but was thrilled to find it here the 3rd and final film in the siries gr8 stuff
Groovy.......2007-05-04
The series takes a left turn towards comedy in this sequel to a straight out horror film, not to say there is no horror to be found. There are plenty of scenes that will make you jump if you don't know what is coming, but there is a lot of laughs as well. In one word, the movie is fun. Bruce Campbell carries the film since it really does focus on his character and changes Ash from a quiet person into this explosive action hero that you can't help but cheer on! Every time I think of my favorite scenes, the majority of them involve Ash, which is what makes him such a great character. The big scene I immediately think of is when he fights his own hand, you'll just have to watch to see that for yourself.
A bigger budget was used in the making of this movie, but some B qualities still can be seen in the movie. Such as you can see there is no roof to the cabin when Ash is trying to out run the deadite spirit following him into the house. Another instance being when the eye pops out of the deadite, you can see the little black piece of plastic making the eye fly. Small things like that do not effect this movie, the story is compelling and you will ignore anything that seems cheesy. There is too much good about the movie and will always win over anything bad that can be said about this movie.
People kept asking after watching the first movie, why wasn't Ash every possessed in the first film when all of his friends were? Well, he gets to be possessed in this film in more than one occasion, so it goes to show that even he isn't immune. Overall, this is another MUST SEE! I have watched the movie many times and this is definitely something that will never get old.

Though Bob (Benjamin) Clark made his mark on Hollywood with films as diverse as Porky's and A Christmas Story, he began his career with this imaginative zombie tale. Alan Ormsby (who also wrote Paul Schrader's remake of Cat People and directed the cult horror film Deranged) penned the script and stars as Alan, a flamboyant theater director who brings his company--whom he condescendingly refers to as his "children"--to a rotting graveyard on a fogbound island. There he begins a ceremony to raise the dead, but it's all an elaborate practical joke, just another mind game by the would-be demagogue... or so he thinks. As Alan continues his midnight games of manipulation and degradation, it turns out the joke's on him as the graveyard rises to life. The acting, though amateurish, is energetic and delivered with gusto, and the awkward, theatrical dialogue becomes oddly appropriate (if somewhat stiff) in the affected presence of preening Alan. The often-slow extended introduction pays off in a carnage-riddled zombie blowout, like Night of the Living Dead compressed into a half-hour highlight reel. Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things is the work of ambitious beginners, but they deliver the goods when it counts with solid low-budget effects and a well-directed finale that turns the tense humor into unrelenting horror.
The DVD mastering is unaccountably sloppy: images jerk and intermittently slow down, the action hiccups, and in the second half red and blue flares rim the right side of the picture. --Sean Axmaker
Description
The SET-UP: Five young kinky actors and their artistic director come to a desolate and nearly forgotten burial island, complete with a morbid history of MURDER, RAPE, CURSES and DEMONS. Alan (Alan Ormsby), the brilliant but bizarre Director of the company, has brought them to this foreboding place to dabble in witchcraft; specifically to dig up a fresh corpse and use it in a ritual ceremony which is supposed to raise the dead from their graves. The PAY-OFF: It seems as though Alan has really gathered his "children" here, only to play a practical joke on them and then to party the rest of the night away. However, the joke's on Alan. His bizarre ritual ceremony really does raise the dead from their graves...only they're in no mood to party! NOTE: "BENJAMIN" CLARK is really "BOB" CLARK, the creative director behind the hit films PORKY'S, BLACK CHRISTMAS and A CHRISTMAS STORY among others. ALAN ORMSBY, though he turned in what has been described as "...one of the most obnoxious screen performances in history!", has actually made a mark for himself as the screenwriter for such memorable films as MY BODYGUARD, CAT PEOPLE, KARATE KID 3 and PORKY'S 2.
Bonus Features: Scene Selection| Original Theatrical Trailer| Photo Gallery| Actor Bios.
Specs: DVD5; Dolby Digital Mono; 87 minutes; Color; 1.85:1 Aspect Ratio; MPAA - PG; Year - 1972; SRP - $9.99.

THE DEAD ARE COMING FOR US........2007-04-27
I first saw this movie some 20 years ago on a TV show called " CREATURE FEATURE" and thought it was really cool than. supposedly, this takes place on an island where some movie director and his crew of wanna be actors arrive on and 2 of his crew take the caretaker hostage while he tries to concoct a plan to raise the dead while reading some verse from a book. This is considered to be a joke and Alan and his guys dig up a dead body to bring to the cottage their staying in to poke fun at it until the dead start to rise and the real fun begins.
ok movie.......2007-03-14
i got this dvd for 2 reasons : the last 20 minutes and cover sleeve.
children shouldent play with dead things.......2007-03-11
thank you for the dvd i like think your site was verry good
Good plot, bad actors........2007-01-10
I think that this movie has a good idea going for it, but the actors really drag it down. I think that it can be remade, and be a great movie.
Great 70's horror.......2006-08-17
I really like this movie. There's not a whole lot of action for about the first hour. The focus is on character development. But I found the dialog to be very engaging and clever, and I also thought the humor was genuinely funny. The acting is also pretty good for a B movie. There's a lot of buildup to the climax of the film, which really delivers.
If you like this one, also check out "Deranged" (1974), an Ed Gein based horror movie that Alan Ormsby also worked on.

Not as good as cold be.......2007-04-11
The way they portrayed Freddy with his mask was just no good. At the time it came out there should have been better effects and costumes though out the movie, overall disappointing but you should still see it if you are a die hard Elm Street fan.
It takes a woman to go farther than a father.......2007-02-15
It takes a woman to bring about this sixth episode. Rachel Talalay revives Freddy and gives him a new dimension. First he is revived through a boy and we may think we are back to the second episode. Wrong. We all start this sixth stage in our trip in a plane and then the nightmare comes. The boy finds himself in a teenage shelter, in other words a prison for teenagers because Freddy's target is the female psychiatrist. They all believe the boy is Freddy's son. Wrong again. The boy is only the caretaker of one mission : bring the female psychiatrist to Springwood which is only two miles away. There Freddy will get three more victims, all boys. He definitely is a male-child molester more than a female-child abuser. But this time, with the help of another psychiatrist, male and black, the woman is going to get into Freddy's head, which is possible because she is his daughter and she has plenty of common recollections with him. She gets him out of the dreamscape in which he is protected and overpowerful and gets him into the real world where he is mortal. The final fight will lead to his absolute annihilation with his own claws and a good old stick of dynamite, his own penetrating and raping tools turned back onto him with the penis-like dynamite stick as a cherry to top it of, and he finally loses his cherry. The film though is more interesting than just that. First it is modern, it has grown up along with the world and we have electronic games, colour TV, consoles of all types, hearing aids and many other modern gadgets. Second it has also followed the growth of teenagers as an age group and the teenagers in the film are from our modern time : they are definitely rebellious, have been marginalized by drugs and many other things, including the abuse from their parents, and are now controled by the police and other judicial institutions for delinquent teenagers. They are at least neurotic and can become psychotic in a minute, in the wink of a dream, when the real world becomes virtual, dreamlike, or even inexistant. But the film enables us to discover Freddy in his real life. He was married and had a daughter and yet at the same time had been the victim of adults and had developed a complete tolerance to any suffering. And here Rachel Talalay plays with us and introduces a blue-beard recollection in Freddy's daughter's discovering her father's torture chamber. Finally the technique used in the film has been updated to all kinds of modern special effects. This sixth episode though wants to be the end of the saga in its title and in its closing scene and song, though the last picture is still one of Freddy himself standing upright on his feet. It is well known that the strongest nightmares are forever and ever and ever again.

a bit of a let down.......2007-02-04
i heard through the grapevine that this was a 3-D movie, which intrigued me. upon purchasing this DVD, i found that this is not the 3-D version. the SFX in this movie bite, but only because they were meant to be in three dimensions.
it is a bit of a lame focal point, but the 3-d glasses play a part in the movie (don't worry, i won't spoil how!) but it would have been better to have both the 3-d and regular versions in this DVD. I then discovered that the Freddy box set has the original 3-d version with special edition glasses, which pissed me off no short of pissing, right after i completed my own 'nightmare' collection... oh well...
at least i got the special edition of the first 'nightmare'
ok, for the money.......2007-01-10
The movie has too many cameo's or how ever it is spelled, I dont like this Freddy or the second Movie the rest our good though.
The Franchise's Dead- The Final Nightmare.......2006-12-29
It is 10 years later (though after what is never mentioned) and Springwood has lost all it's children to Freddy (Robert Englund). Now he is looking for his long lost daughter Maggie (played by Lisa Zane), who as it turns out, is a youth councilor. After many deaths and Maggie goes into Freddy's dreams to discover the secret of destroying him, and brings him out of the dreams and finally kills him, for ever and ever; or at least until the next sequel.
This movie is the absolute pits. I hate to say it, because making movie, no matter good or bad, is hard work. But it just fails on every level. As a horror movie it's a joke; as a fantasy it's dull; and as a comedy (which they could have went for with a quick rewrite) it's just boring with stupid jokes and sight gags that are just too sick to be funny. In part 5 I said Freddy was his own worst enemy, but here he is just another cog in the broken down machine. In life Freddy was a child killer, and yet he never hurt his daughter, easily the kid he had the most opportunity to mess with? Then there was the cameos; Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper (as Freddy's abusive step-father) was OK, at least not annoying. Rosanne and Tom Arnold was way too much for me though. The only saving grace was Yaphet Kotto, who played a psychologist who specializes in dream manipulation, a skill that comes in handy. Lisa Zane was a good actress in "L.A. Law", but here she dose not convince me, or even act surprised with her startling revelation. The dream sequences are the absolute worst of the series, with Freddy riding a broom like the Wicked Witch of the West, or the stupid Nintendo death scene. And oh boy, the 3D sequence. If you don't have the glasses you're going to have a bad headache after watching it.
This movie was so bad on every level that a few years later Wes Craven came back to put the series back on track. This one is for die hard Freddy fans only; one of which I thought I was until Freddy died.

Customer Reviews:
Great Horror films, great boxset.......2007-05-21
I always wanted to get these films, and when I saw this set coffin shaped and all I had to get it, great set of great horror film. Really good effects and suspence in this series. Great movies, and one of those flicks I wouldn't mind seeing remade if done the right of coarse, we don't want another Fog remake.
Oh, Brother, I'm a Blind Dead Fanboy!.......2006-06-17
Creepy? Sometimes. Intense? Rarely. Amusing? Without fail. I bought this collection without having seen the films, and, while I find the description of the series as a masterpiece of creepiness incredibly misleading, I want to attest to the series' power to yank me into the realm of geeky, cult-fan fervor. Here's my quick-as-a-whip assessemnt of the four films. The first film, "Tombs ...," is classic (especially in the realm of what one might term horny horror); the second film, "Return ...," slightly improves upon it (well, not the horny part); and then, oops, the third film, "Ghost Galleon," slips (except in its sheer ridiculousness), but, oh, then the fourth film, "Seagulls," acts like a compendium of all that was good about the first three, and it's even a little bit poetic. Get it? Watch this series (rent it, if you must, you chickens), and see if you can figure out 1) why there is a seemingly mandatory (because totally arbitrary) rape scene or near-rape scene in three of the four films, 2) why the Knights Templar always slice graphically (though not realistically) through a breast during their ceremonies, 3) how it is that the Knights Templar choose the time that they will rise to avenge their deaths, 4) how on earth they end up on a ship (in guess-which-film?), and 5) how Peter Jackson got away with ripping off the look of the Knights Templar for his Wringraiths in LotR (see any moment when the Knights are slo-mo riding across vast plains with their black cloaks trailing away on the wind behind them). Perhaps the list goes on, but the list is what makes the films such fun. Some viewers might not find points #1 and #2 here very "fun," but the absurd context in which these scenes are presented mostly take the edge off of the films' potential to offend. All in all, good, dirty grist for the cult-film mill. Oh, and "Tombs" even features a little girl-on-girl action for the straight fanboy, or the lesbian fangirl. Ah, diversity!
Well, they're not very good films really..........2006-05-31
I'd always been curious about the Blind Dead films, and a friend who's a fan gave me a pirate (aptly enough) dvd of Ghost Galleon. It's a bad film (that inspired a better one, Carpenter's The Fog) and yet somehow (despite the worst model work ever) I rather liked it, so I bought this box set, curious to see a decent print of Galleon as well as the other films. On the commentary De Ossorio, an amiable hack, says they didn't have the money to do things properly, and that about sums it up. The Blind Dead are effective and there are some creepy moments here and there, but the scripts are dreadful, the acting's dire and the directing often simply inept (for instance: bad cutting together of various poorly-chosen shots creating a confusion as to who's where doing what to who, particularly in Return of the Living Dead; appalling day-for-night shots in three of the four films that are so brazenly daylit it takes you a while to realise it's meant to still be the night; re-use of the Blind Dead emerging from their tombs and riding their horses in three of the movies). Sometimes the badness is fun, as when a girl, fleeing her kidnapper/rapist in Ghost Galleon, wastes time strapping on some elaborate high-heeled sandals that she won't be able to run in prior to attempting her escape, but mostly the bad plotting, garish acting and absent characterisation are rather dull to sit through. The creepiest effect - the Blind Dead listening for the heartbeats of their victims - is about the only thing that isn't reused, which is a shame.
The presentation is excellent: the Spanish language version of Tombs is uncut; the American one is heavily cut. All are in widescreen, and the prints are colourful and clean. The interview/featurette disc is mildly interesting and - along with a good and informative 40pp leaflet - tells you about as much as you need to know about these minor curios.
What's curious, and makes these films worth preserving, is, I think, that they gesture towards being so much better than they are: in my memory I find myself imagining what if they had been everything they might have been, remade with time and money and attention and good scripts? What if one cared about the people the Blind Dead were pursuing? What if things made sense? What if the night scenes were shot at night?
I'd say two stars for the movies, 5 stars for the presentation, so I guess about 3 stars overall.
The Knights Templar Ride Again!.......2006-04-21
This is definitely not something for the mainstream film fan, but if you're into Spanish horror and more specifically writer/director Amando de Ossorio's atmospheric four movies known lovingly as "the Blind Dead", this is the item for you.
Blue Underground has put together one of the best boxsets to come along in quite some time. Yes, the price tag is a little steep but if you're a true fan of this rarely seen series it's worth every penny. The box contains -5 discs- (4 movies and a documentary), each in their own plastic case with great cover art, a 40 page booklet with photo stills and original poster art and a sturdy casket shaped box for display (or to hide away from friends and family unsympathic with your "perverse" taste in movies).
The collection is not perfect, there are several missing scenes here and there no matter what the distributor says to the contrary. Be that as it may, these films have been unavailable for so long I'll overlook this one tiny flaw.
Warning: Be sure your wife or girlfriend are safely inside the house before viewing and if you hear the sound of hoofs approaching DON'T OPEN THE DOOR!
Very unique spanish horror........2006-01-06
The blind dead collection is fantastic, it contains all 4 films in the series complete and uncut and a fifth disc with a short documentary on the spanish director Amando De Ossorio and an interview. The films are probably a great example of the euro horror genre with the amount of blood, gore and nudity. The films also have a great gothic atmosphere and excelent music especialy when the templar knights rise from their tombs and start riding their horses its very creepy. I have heard alot of great things about these films from other horror websites and when I finaly got to watch them I was not dissapointed well except for the third film Ghost galleon which I admit was a peice of crap.
Tombs of the blind dead which centres on an evil cult of knights known as the Templars in the 13th century tortured and murdered innocent victims in a quest for eternal life. After a revolt by the local townspeople, the Templar knights were executed and their corpses left for the crows to peck out their eyes. Years later, terror begins again as the eyeless undead knights rise from their tombs to hunt their victims by sound. The victims include a couple on a train and an old friend, the girl gets fustrated with her friend so she decides to jump off the train in the middle of no where nice one!. The film wasn't exactly terrifying but it was creepy as hell I absolutly loved it, the film was a different take on the zombie genre which I thought was an original idea the Templar knights are basicly mummified skeletons that wear robes and usualy hack or slash their victims with swords and drink their blood.
Return of the blind dead which is the sequal, those who have complained about the continuety of the films should realise that all the films on their own have different storylines and even the background of the templar knights is different. In Return of the blind dead the templars get their eyes burnt out in the begining by the villigers for commiting human sacrifices, 500 years later the Templar knights return from the grave to terrorize a rural Portugese village during it's centennial celebration. Sooner than later a small group of people including the mayor, the mayor's wife, a wife and husband and their young child ect. take refuge in a deserted cathedral and must find a way to escape from the Templars. This film was deffinently my favorite out of the series since it was the goriest film (nice decapitation scene) and as cheesy and ridicioulos as it may seem you also get to see a living dead horse........
The ghost galleon was truly awful while not the worst film I have ever seen I thought it was pretty close, with cheap production values and an Ed Wood style of filmmaking and a terrible script I just thought it was horrendous. The ship that they use as background shots is a toy model ship used in a bathtub incase you were wondering. A pair of models staging a publicity stunt on the sea in a motor launch mysteriously disappear after reporting a mysterious ghost ship wooooow. After learning the ghost ship has been seen along the meridian the girls disappeared at for years, a search sets out and discovers that the ship is inhabited by the undead Templar knights. The film has just one gore scene and the rest of the film was bloodless and the acting oh dear which I didn't think would be possible is even worse than the previous films.
Night of the seagulls is the last in the series and is surprisingly good and a vast improvement over Ghost gallion, on this outing the Templars haunt a fishing village where they rise seven nights every seven years to claim a virgin for their sacrificial offerings in return for the safety of the townspeople. I was glad when they brought back the blood and gore while the film wasn't the best in the series it was still good. all four discs have trailers for the films themselves and a picture/poster gallery and overall I think that Blue underground did a great job releasing these obscure horror films and I highly recomend this especialy for euro horror fans while other viewers should watch something else cause you might notice that it was a waste of time and money like some other reviewers have said.
I thought it was money well spent even if it was a bit to expensive almost 90$, its better than ordering something like Strip nude for your killer (What the hell was I thinking!!?) theres another addition by anchor bay but you can only find it on E-Bay. The films were fantastic except for Ghost gallion and its prefrebly watched after midnight cause thats the best time to watch these.

DON'T MOVE...DON'T BREATHE...DON'T LET THEM HEAR YOUR HEART BEATING...
In 1971, director Amando de Ossorio created what horror fans worldwide consider to be Spain's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. In Ossorio's nightmare vision, a legion of Knights Templar - executed horsemen whose eyes have been pecked out by crows - rise rotting from their graves, hunting only by sound in a quest for human flesh. The BLIND DEAD saga begins here, as a modern-day tourist trip to the ruins of the Templar monastery unleashes a frenzy of lesbian desire, sexual violence and the unholy onslaught of the eyeless undead!
This Definitive Edition of TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD - the first of the four BLIND DEAD movies - contains both the original American and uncensored Spanish Versions (complete with newly translated English subtitles), all fully restored from pristine negative materials and transferred in eye-popping High Definition.

One of the better horror films I've watched as of late.......2007-06-06
I think from all of the horror films I've watched recently, "Tombs of the Blind Dead" truly had some genuine creepiness and suspense to it. I have to warn you though, it's better to watch the film in its original Spanish language with English subtitles, because the English version has been hacked to pieces.
Not bad dead cheese.......2007-05-24
I can't say this movie just blew me away. It is rather cheesy. But somehow restored and then viewing the whole Blind dead movies..I'd say this one is the best. Now..the zombie/knight/skeletons, although not very mobile, are pretty cool looking. The plot...well, kinda funny. I mean I like the whole jealousy over the man, and jumping from the train to find oneself in an ancient ruin inhabited by horse riding blind zombie knights thing. I hated this movie at first..then I watched again...and again. I now truly think this film is ok. If I were a kid I'd go nuts over it. Just realize that this would make a great Saturday afternoon in the rain horror movie. Don't look for anything else. I'd like to own a zombie tattered robe like they have on in the movie though.
VERY VERY GOOD.......2007-03-05
SO I LIKE SO MUCH THIS MOVIE IT IS REALLY UNRATED YOU CAN SEE THE RAPE THE BLOOD EVERYTHING THAT WE COULDN T SEE BEFORE SO FOR THE YEAR 1971 I THINK IT WAS TOO MUCH FOR THIS PERIOD

The first Amando de Ossorio undead Templar Knights films.......2005-11-27
"Tombs of the Blind Dead" ("La Noche del terror ciego") is the first of the four films by writer-director Amando de Ossorio dealing with the Templar Knights that rise from the dead and creep, very slowly, after their victims. Five hundred years ago the Templars were sacrificing virgins and drinking their blood. Eventually the locals attacked the Templars, burning out the eyes of the knights before burning them at the stake. Ever since then no one goes near their castle, that is until Virginia White (María Elena Arpón) hops off a train in the middle of nowhere and ends up spending the night there. That night the Templar knights, skeletal corpses dressed up in armor, rise (slowly) from their tombs and follow the sounds of Virginia's screams. The trick is to stay silent so the blind Templars cannot hear where you are, but it is difficult to stay quiet when these things are after you.
When Virginia's dead body is found her friends Betty Turner (Lone Fleming) and Roger Whelan (César Burner) decide to find out what happened to her. This is where they learn the legend of the Templars and then go off to investigate the castle, thinking that maybe somebody is using the local tale as a cover for criminal activity. This explains why they drag along local smuggler Pedro Candal (Joseph Thelman) and his girlfriend Maria (María Silva), to investigate the place, which only gives the Templars more victims to pursue (slowly). In his horror films Ossorio is all about atmosphere, so what stands out here is the thought of these shuffling corpses coming after you while the young women who are about to die take terms trying not to make a sound and then screaming all the way until the end. There is usually some blood at the end, but "Tombs of the Blind Dead" is more about spooky atmosphere. You just have to remind yourself that this film was made in 1971 and not judge its slower pace (and the slowest monsters you have ever seen) by the standard of contemporary horror films.
Actually, this is the 86 minute dubbed into English version of the original 101 minute Spanish film. What has been cut from "La Noche del terror ciego" is the nudity, a rather chaste lesbian love scene, the bloodier parts of the flashback to the Templar rituals, and one of the more gratuitous rape scenes of all-time (although the part where the rapist offers his victim a cigarette afterwards before he is killed by the Templars remains for you to scratch your head over). The edited flashback is actually the prologue for "Tombs of the Blind Dead." Obviously if you can track down the existing Spanish version (which clocks in at 97 minutes for some reason) you can see the film Ossorio actually made and not this edited down version, paying the small price of reading subtitles to enjoy the film.
This film was followed by "El ataque de los muertos sin ojos" ("Return of hte Blind Dead") in 1973, "El buque maldito" ("The Ghost Galleon") in 1974, and "La Noche de las gavitos" ("Night of the Seagulls") in 1975. Some see Jesus Franco's 1985 film "La Mansión de los muertos vivientes" as a remake of Ossorio's first film, but I think you are on safer ground if you consider it to be definitely inspired by this entire series. One of the interesting things about the series is that most of the films can stand on their own, with the second being the best of the lot.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty awful but strangely atmospheric zombie movie.......2007-02-11
Filmed in the swampy inland of Florida in 1980, "The Alien Dead" is a horrendously low-budget zombie movie. The premise is that a space-born disease infected a bunch of bayou rednecks and after they finished up all the alligators they start eating the locals.
The acting is utterly terrible, everyone sounds like they're reading a script at a rehearsal. The only good actor is veteran Buster Crab, who does a good Southern accent and plays the old "Pappy" pretty well. Everyone else has the most hideously affected accent, and they go right back to non-accented speech as soon as they start to get scared.
OK now, for those into zombie lore, as I am: first off, these are more like the zombies of "28 Days Later" than Romero, as they are actually still alive, just diseased. They are also able to use weapons, like axes and pitchforks. The makeup consists of Halloween masks for the male zombies and the women, interestingly, are mostly leggy hot blonds with white and black face paint. The music is one of the best parts of the movie, I think. It's that eerie 70s-80s synth music like you hear in Romero's early "Dead" movies which, even though it's cheap, is kind of spooky in an 80s horror movie way.
The zombie carnage in this film is actually not THE worst I've seen. Most of the victims just get knocked out, spit blood, and get dragged off screen to become food. There is one surprisingly good vore scene with a hot blond girl who gets knocked down, a female zombie rips her hand off and munches, while she writhes and vomits blood. Then, still alive, she dribbles more blood as her other arm is gnawed by a zombie guy and her throat is chewed.
All in all not the worst zombie movie ever, but far from the best.
ALIEN DEAD deserves more credit..........2006-01-15
I bought this dvd and was completely surprised! I was not expecting anything at all, due to the other reviews I read about this movie. This movies plot was very interesting and somewhat similar to ZOMBIE LAKE, but a lot better. Basically comes down to water zombies. I was completely surprised with the intro to the film and the really cool and subtle soundtrack. The acting lacks a lot, but that actually makes it more fun to watch. For the budget it had the zombies actually look really cool.
I loved Alien Dead!.......2005-06-04
The other reviews for this movie had me rolling on the floor and I am not kidding! I have to agree it is one of the worst movies ever made which is why I gave it 5 stars. Ed Wood eat your heart out. The best part is that I think that Fred Olen Ray was thinking he had directed a decent movie since he got Buster Crabbe to star in it.
I really like the soundtrack though.
Let Down.......2004-10-15
Normally I am a big fan of cheap, cheesy 1970s horror films, especially if they take place in swamps and star aging has-beens. So you'd think I'd love this film. Nope. For one thing it is too self-conscious: it actually TRIES to be funny but isn't. For another thing, whatever redeeming qualities the first half of the film may have, by the time you get to the second half it is so repetitious that it become extremely plodding. And there is no payoff at the ending because THE FILM HAS NO ENDING! Somehow Ray forgot to give the film either any sense of resolution or some sort of shock. I'd settle for even for a poorly done shock. But no, the film just ends when it could have similarly ended after the first 25 minutes.
Even worse, the prologue Ray added to the beginning of the movie some time after he finished filming and everyone had gone home manages to make the non-ending even more of a non-ending. Now THAT was an accomplishment!
Pornos have better production values...........2004-07-19
even homemade ones. I knew this was a bad movie, I didn't mind that. But the whole production makes this unwatchable. For instance, the whole opening scene on the lake looks like it was lit with a match. You cannot make out anything because it's so dark. Just because something is shot at night doesn't mean you don't light the scene!
Even if you like bad z horror movies, I say stay clear of this one. Buy something like Zombie Bloodbath or Children of the Living Dead. Those movies are horrible as well, but at least you can see what's going on.

Pure Cheez Whiz.......2006-11-18
I really think that this was made INTENTIONALLY bad! It must fall under the category of "so bad its good." A title bestowed upon classic B movie cheesey ragu sauce like "Plan 9 From Outer Space." Ok so this is no Plan 9 but anything with zombies and Tony todd in the same sentence should be at least DECENT?? NOT SO! Despite having the usually good Tony Todd (Candyman, Night of the living dead remake ) and Tony Leung ( martial arts stunman to Bruce Lee and expert martial arts master hissdamnself ) this is pretty terrible. It is more of an exploitation horror flick, a very cheesy one at that, that has plenty of girl on girl sex and gore. The acting is terrible, and even the stunts are pretty low rate. This is surprising since Tony Leung is a master of the form. The budget they had making this must have been next to nothing. Besides some cool lesbian soft core and a few deent kicks and punches, this is the worst horror movie I've seen in awhile! It incorporates zombies into the already really corny mix of occult and soft core porn. I think this had zombies solely because of Tony Todd, a "zombie flick" alumnus. Better than "Day of the Dead 2" but will this go down in the annals of a "Candyman" or "Night of the Living Dead?" Uhhhh, no! the placement of zombies is just a ploy to get Romero fans and general fans of horror to watch this. It comes off more as reason to touch oneself with ya frat buddies! Really bad and only if you MUST go so low at least absorb the cheese factor for all its worth.
Crappy horror film is also a crappy women-in-prison film!.......2006-06-02
How could director Derek Wan have possibly screwed this one up?
I mean, yes, it was almost certainly going to be campy, mixing in zombies with pretty girls behind bars, but campy is supposed to be fun, isn't it? This movie is NOT fun. It's stupid and uninteresting.
Margaret Baker was very well cast as a predatory lesbian guard who sets her sights on pretty female inmates like Misty Mundae and Ruby Larocca. But aside from some brief conversation, nothing ever happens! There's not one halfway decent girls-molesting-other-girls scene in this entire film! Obviously the decision was made to get right to the stupid zombies instead.
What a disappointing dud!
Completely redundant........2006-05-06
One would think that Fangoria editor Michael Gingold would have seen enough crappy horror movies to know when he was contributing to the problem, but Shadow: Dead Riot stands as testament to the opposite. It's a good thing that a healthy fraction of the horror fan population seems to relish any movie with bare breasts, gore, and heavy metal tunes, because those are the only people who will give this picture's investors a return on their money.
Skip this flick and go with one of the half-dozen GOOD zombie movies released in the last ten years: 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, something else besides this.
Sciamachy.......2006-04-14
There are shelves full of horror films superior to this one. It is not even in the same category as 28 Days Later, for example, and barely allowable on a list including the low budget 2000 Maniacs. That said, Shadow: Dead Riot nevertheless is better than one might expect. It has a watchable mix of mayhem, sleaze, and dark humor. If much of the cast seems plucked off a Jerry Springer Show, this is appropriate for the inmates of the run-down women's prison in which nearly the entire action takes place. Carla Greene makes her rough-edged character Solitaire sympathetic enough to build suspense when she is put in danger. Most horror fans will find this movie sufficiently entertaining.
Tony Todd, womens prison, zombies...what's not to like?.......2006-04-08
Well, you'd think this had the makings of a cult classic ala "Manos" or "Plan 9"...they've even advertised martial arts. How can you go wrong with all these elements? Oh yeah, don't write any type of script, get the worst actors you can possibly find (even Tony's horrible in this) and shoot the whole mess on video. This movie is so awful it can't even be enjoyed in that "Mystery Science Theater 3000" way.
"Shadow: Dead Riot" is, hand's down, the worst movie I've seen in a decade. Stay very far away from this. I'd give it a zero rating if allowed.
