The Evil Dead (Book Of The Dead Limited Edition)

Starring:Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi
Studio: Anchor Bay
Product Type: DVD
Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favorite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. The Evil Dead lacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness--but it is still much more than a gore movie. It marks the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation, and it stands as a monument to the triumph of imagination over budget. --Simon Leake

Customer Reviews:
a movie worth a watch.......2007-07-03
i bought the vhs version from a friend because i thought it was a zombie movie. it has somewhat of zombies but the main thing in this movie is an
evil spirit is awaken when 5 teans want to spend a few days in a forest in
a cabin but they find a book that is supposed to awaken the spirit
and the spirit is in the trees. this spirit can also turn the people into
these possesed zombie things that are controlled by the spirit. after a
good hour of the movie only one person is left (if i told you it would be
a spoiler)and that person is trying to kill the zombie things and try and stop the tree spirit. but anyway the movie is surprisingly good and is worth a watch once or twice and the ending couldve been a little better
but that is why there is a sequal i guess. also one more thing is that i wasnt really scared but there are a lot of scenes where something would jump out of nowhere but i like a good scare.
An Awesome Movie That Became An Icon of Horror.......2007-05-03
It may not look like much by today's standards, but for the budget that was used making this movie, it really comes off great. This film is different from the two sequels in a couple of ways, one being that Ash is more of the cowardly co-star and second being that this is strictly horror. Not that it is really scary, but it's intention are in that genre with no real laughs intended. Everytime I watch the movie, I am amazed with how much was able to get done with such a low amount of money to spend and how well the movie comes off. It is just as good as any major film of the same year, you can't really tell the difference between a big budget horror movie and the Evil Dead when it comes to quality.
It is easy to tell that there was talent that was working in front of and behind the camera. Not just Bruce (who would be the only star with any future success in film), but everyone else was equally impressive. The way the entire movie was written, set up and shot is nothing short of amazing for a young director and writer (Sam Raimi). Overall, if you have seen any of the other movies in the series or never have, this movie is a big recommendation. Just know that this is different from the other movies, as I said, Ash isn't the heroic icon he is known for now with the quick one liners. He is more of a side kick who accidentally has to survive his friends turning evil.
EVIL DEAD THE FIRST OF THREE.......2007-04-11
THIS FIRST EPISODE OF THE EVIL TRILOGY IS DEFINITELY THE BEST. IT IS SCARY AND FUNNY. BRUCE CAMPBELL IS GREAT. EVIL DEAD 2 AND ARMY OF DARKNESS WERE ALSO GREAT MOVIES. I RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WHO LIKES SCARY MOVIES.
evil dead .......2007-04-11
the evil dead movie is hit on my part, in my books the movie is second place so far, in 1st the therd movie army of darkness is in first. But i have not seen the second movie.I loved the movie and injoyed it a lot, will they ever die!?!?!?!
Very good scary movie.......2007-01-23
I really love this movie. It is one of my favorite scary movies of all time.

Writer-director Sam Raimi's extremely stylized, blood-soaked follow-up to his creepy Evil Dead isn't really a sequel; rather, it's a remake on a better budget. It also isn't really a horror film (though there are plenty of decapitations, zombies, supernatural demons, and gore) as much as it is a hilarious, sophisticated slapstick send-up of the terror genre. Raimi takes every horror convention that exists and exaggerates it with mind-blowing special effects, crossed with mocking Three Stooges humor. The plot alone is a genre cliché right out of any number of horror films. Several teens (including our hero, Ash, played by Bruce Campbell in a manic tour-de-force of physical comedy) visit a broken-down cottage in the woods--miles from civilization--find a copy of the Book of the Dead, and unleash supernatural powers that gut every character in sight. All, that is, except Ash, who takes this very personally and spends much of the of the film getting his head smashed while battling the unseen forces. Raimi uses this bare-bones story as a stage to showcase dazzling special effects and eye-popping visuals, including some of the most spectacular point-of-view Steadicam work ever (done by Peter Deming). Although it went unnoticed in the theaters, the film has since become an influential cult-video favorite, paving the way for over-the-top comic gross-out films like Peter Jackson's Dead Alive. --Dave McCoy

A Classic.......2007-06-17
This is one of the best films ever made.
I should end the review there, but I guess I'll add a few other remarks, since that line alone would strike many as preposterous. Ok, first I should clarify: this is one of the best films ever made if you like the horror genre (and especially the comedy-horror sub-genre). Obviously if you hate horror films you won't think this is very good. That's fine. Usually when I see those "Greatest 100 movies" type lists, I don't like more than 2 or 3 on the entire list. Everyone has an opinion, and opinions are of necessity subjective. So if you don't like horror... run from this page, run very quickly.
Still here? Great! Anyway, I'm not going to go over all the great stuff in the film, most people have covered that pretty well. There's gore, there's slapstick, there's a ton of sight gags and wonderfully corny lines and catch phrases. It also has some interesting characters, especially the heroic fool Ash. This is just a damn fine movie.
The packaging is certainly... interesting. The artwork inside is nice, though a depiction of the skull on the original cover would have been nice (especially since there are two blank pages). The commentary is great, with lots of entertaining stories, tons of insights and things to watch for in the movie, and some bad jokes (as one would expect). I wish they would have added another commentary or two, as there seems to be (based on what I've read) quite a bit more that could be said about this film, but I guess one will have to do. The other extras were also pretty interesting, with even the picture section (a narrated slide show) being engaging, which is a first.
excelent edition!.......2007-05-29
Hola. Este dvd de evil dead 2 es altamente recomendable para cualquier fan de los DVDS o cualquier fan de EVIL DEAD. Es un lujazo de edicion y se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo.
Absolute Comedy/Horror Standard.......2007-05-23
Allow me to preface this review with a helpful fact. A few years back when Spin Magazine was writing about the films they felt were the greatest of the 20th century, they chose to include Sam Raimi's sequel to his very first film; which was a small independent horror called The Evil Dead. The Evil Dead was a great film in it's own right, however, the editors at Spin wanted to give Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn the recognition they felt it deserved. So they placed it at the top of their list...that's right, they felt that it is, in fact, the single greatest cinematic achievement of the 20th century.
Evil Dead 2 follows Ash Williams and his girlfriend into a small creepy Michigan cottage where they stumble upon some recordings that contain readings from an ancient relic called the book of the dead, and by playing these recordings they unleash demonic supernatural forces that quickly haunt and possess everything from the trees outside and Popeye's lamp to Ash's hand and his girlfriend's severed head. The shenanigans unfold and Ash is more game than perhaps anyone to take on these evil forces as best as he can, but some sort of defeat is consistently inevitable.
As a reader I hope you are not anticipating my rebuttal to Spin Magazine here. I just so happen to concur 100% with Spin's gutsy assertion. On the surface of Evil Dead 2, we are seeing vintage 80s shock horror but it certainly isn't presented deeply enough to qualify amongst the failures within that genre. Evil Dead 2 is microcosmically structured like classic slapstick and macrocosmically it functions as pure satire. In this sense it's budget is used firmly to it's advantage and runs together with the theme of making a select audience laugh, first and foremost. Those who are both distinctly either disturbed by gore or preoccupied by gore as a strength in horror, should take keen note that gore in this film is applied almost exclusively for physical slapstick comedy. Those who hate gore will hate it here and those who love to be immersed in gore may not understand or appreciate it's use in Evil Dead 2.
We get to see a chubby fruit cellar witch's soul-swallowing head extend via shoddy stop-motion effects. We get to see an eyeball pop out of her head and shoot across the room into some chick's mouth. We get so see blood spray humorously and pretty consistently out of the walls and floors of the cottage. We get to see Ash fight his hand, cut it off, and add a chainsaw to where his hand once was. We get to see him kill his girlfriend and fight both her severed head and headless body in a tool shed at the same time. We get to see Ash get clumsily chased around the house by a force of evil we never see. We also get to see the volume of slapstick comedy increase as the film goes on and finally we get to see a conclusion that still makes me kind of wish they never made a sequel (even though Army of Darkness is in and of itself a very good movie).
Evil Dead 2 may require a deeper degree of movie history appreciation, perhaps more specifically to exploitation and horror films. I know I sound like a movie snob saying that but the film does offer some fun and fitting tributes or references to past films. I think it is definitely fair to say that Raimi has a great appreciation for movies in general and we can plainly see that he has so much fun making them. Evil Dead 2 for me is fun, affable, and carefree; it is all the things it shouldn't be on it's surface, and it is perfect for that fact alone.
brillant film funny as hell.......2007-05-07
great film very hard to get on r2 to in uk but was thrilled to find it here the 3rd and final film in the siries gr8 stuff
Groovy.......2007-05-04
The series takes a left turn towards comedy in this sequel to a straight out horror film, not to say there is no horror to be found. There are plenty of scenes that will make you jump if you don't know what is coming, but there is a lot of laughs as well. In one word, the movie is fun. Bruce Campbell carries the film since it really does focus on his character and changes Ash from a quiet person into this explosive action hero that you can't help but cheer on! Every time I think of my favorite scenes, the majority of them involve Ash, which is what makes him such a great character. The big scene I immediately think of is when he fights his own hand, you'll just have to watch to see that for yourself.
A bigger budget was used in the making of this movie, but some B qualities still can be seen in the movie. Such as you can see there is no roof to the cabin when Ash is trying to out run the deadite spirit following him into the house. Another instance being when the eye pops out of the deadite, you can see the little black piece of plastic making the eye fly. Small things like that do not effect this movie, the story is compelling and you will ignore anything that seems cheesy. There is too much good about the movie and will always win over anything bad that can be said about this movie.
People kept asking after watching the first movie, why wasn't Ash every possessed in the first film when all of his friends were? Well, he gets to be possessed in this film in more than one occasion, so it goes to show that even he isn't immune. Overall, this is another MUST SEE! I have watched the movie many times and this is definitely something that will never get old.

Playing House.......2007-06-02
This 1976 Jodie Foster thriller was advertised as a horror film when it came out, but there's hardly any horror at all in it: it's more like a mystery, with the viewer waiting to find out why Foster's 13 year-old character (bizarrely named "Rynn") seems to live all alone in a large Cape Cod rented house, what she doesn't want anyone to see in her cellar, and why her father never seems to be in when neighbors come to visit. And come they do, again and again; even though Rynn is supposed to be a child genius (she studies Hebrew privately, read Emily Dickinson, and becomes the master of all sorts of outlandish skills central to the mystery), she never seems to get it into her head to lock her front door. Among her unwelcome guests include Alexis Smith as the bossy and anti-Semitic grande dame of the nearby town and Martin Sheen (!) as her loathsome son, a child moesltor who takes a fancy to Rynn and who devises a most repugnant (and absurd) way of killing Foster's pet hamster. More welcome is the very likeable Scott Jacoby as a handicapped teenage magician who comes to help Rynn with her quest to be left alone.
Some people remember this movie very fondly, and it's hard to figure out why. Even setting aside such strange period touches -- Rynn's horrible hairdo, the Moroccan caftan she likes to lounge about the house in, and the odd use of Quinn/Martin-styled electronic background scoring,-- the film is impossibly and fatally stagey, with 90% of the film's action taking place in Rynn's living room. Laird Koenig, who adapted the screenplay from his own novel, is not very graceful with dialogue, and the cast, despite their considerable talents, seem to be tripping all over their awkward repetitive accusatory lines. Foster is very appealing, despite this, and the role does make good use of her intelligent oddball qualities.
Creepy, gets under your skin. .......2007-05-12
I never forgot this movie the first time I saw it as a preteen. It was CREEPY in a psychological way. How smart she was for such a young girl. Her calm demeanor, the way she could outwit adults by words, alone.
And to this day, whenever I see almond cookies or almond tea..I think of this movie, lol.
Unforgettable, chilling, a classic. Jody Foster was incredibly mature at that age to pull the character off, like that. THAT'S TALENT!
Jodie Foster Shines in this role.......2006-12-20
I just watched this movie on TCM a few minutes ago, in the early a.m. hours. Like a lot of the other reviewers, I saw this movie many years ago, and never forgot it. When I watched it this morning, I was still astonished with Jodie Foster's acting ability at such a young age.
It may be a long stretch, a thirteen year old living in a huge house in the country, with her poet father who may, or may not be, living with her. But as the story enfolds, we understand why she is not in school. Thirty years after the movie was made, I got rather frustrated about Alexis Smith's role. I mean, the rent was paid for three years, what's the beef? Too much overacting on her part. And Martin Sheen -- well, he was creepiness personified. A known pedophile in a small town! C'mon. Oh well, it is only a movie!
Great performances from everyone. The town is beautiful, filmed in Canada. About the ending -- what is she going to do now?
Thats what little girls are made of (spoiler warning).......2006-12-07
This was an excellent movie. Jodie Foster gives an impressive performance for someone her age (her character was equal parts annoy and clever). Martin Sheen was equally as good as a vile and sadistic pedophile. Basically an all around good cast. The story was so good that it kept me interested despite the plot holes. I agree with other reviewers that the story tried to deliver the right message about independence and not letting others change you into what they want you to be. But lets face it, in real life a 13 year old living on her own is not a wise idea. At the end her character even admits that they thought of everything except for loneliness and the need for human companionship. I also felt that the 13 year old carrying on a sexual relationship, let alone with someone who was obviously older than her was disturbing. It seems as if the movie was presenting some kind of double standard: Martin Sheen is disgusting for going after young Jodie but "Mario" isn't because he's her hero and within 10 years of her age.
Mario.......2006-11-22
This little girl lives by herself, Its wild how she lives, and what out for that white powder! Mario is her only friend.
And trap door is a goner.

The American answer to SHAUN OF THE DEAD?
Not really. SHAUN was about releationships and efforts to care on many different levels.
This film sinks to gore and anger.
By the end of Shaun you worry about the people involved. Here in this film, you just wind up not caring and don't give a crap and want it to end. NOW!
I'd like my money back please. And my time. And my shelf space. And my sense of humor.

Tagline: Its like a bad horror movie, only worse. (No kidding).......2007-02-18
I love "B-Horror/Comedy" . . . "Evil Dead," "Army of Darkness," "Club Dread," all great (in their own very "special" way). But this film . . . well, it is a REALLY tough call. The cast is recognizable and, oddly enough, lovable! We have Gina Philips who played the sister in "Jeepers Creepers," Erik Palladino who played Dr. Dave Malucci on "ER," Vincent Ventresca who played Fun Bobby on "Friends," and Diedrich Bader who played Oswald on "Drew Carey" . . . just to name a few!! So, if you dig mainstream horror or television, you'll already know (and probably like) the cast. (This is what actually makes you want to finish the film!)
Now, here is the thing . . . this film REALLY stinks. The "cinematography" is HORRENDOUS! It is as though someone strapped a camera to goat and said, "Go make a film, boy!" Moreover, the colors are completely washed-out (with the exception of A LOT of very "arterial" blood . . . think Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive"). And it looks like Leutwyler may have edited the film with his feet (if we are lucky). There are musical interludes about every fifteen minutes (strikingly similar to "Something about Mary") . . . and it's not just some cheesy guy with a guitar, it's a foul-mouthed hillbilly with a guitar. Not to mention, there are bizarre illustrations which clumsily mark the transitions between scenes (I guess it wasn't enough to use "Brady Bunch" wipes and silly split-screens).
It is, at times, funny. It is fairly gory (you actually don't want to watch it on Sci-Fi because all the thrill is probably in the excessive gore). But it JUST misses the mark . . . maybe it was the line-dancing zombies, I dunno. Still, if you are a zombie enthusiast, watch it just to say you did . . . and because David Carradine is in it (Umm, for about five minutes, until his bones are crafted into zombie-killing bone-stakes . . . but still) ;) (And because you will enjoy the allusions to "Evil Dead" . . . including posters and chainsaw/boomstick usage!!)
By the way, if you are buying it for Portia de Rossi prepare to be disappointed (she is in one scene for exactly three minutes). This is one of the film's true failings...deceptive promotion.
Bottom line: I was counting the seconds until it was over (I LITERALLY had my DVD player's time-stamp on-screen) . . . but it was not so bad that I failed to finish it! Huzzah!
EVER SEE A MOVIE THAT TRIED TOO HARD TO BE FUNNY & FAIL COMPLETELY.......2007-01-15
Thankfully I saw Dead and Breakfast on the Sci-Fi channel and did not rent or buy this mess. I have never experienced anything that was supposed to be both horror and funny end up being so totally neither frightening or hallarious. Dead and Breakfast works so hard to be funny and just like so totally isn't. I suspect it is because, NONE of the characters seem real. Maybe it is the fact the movie does not develop any of the characters into a likable enough persona that you actually care about any of them.
Dead and Breakfast depends on nothing but a cheap loud innane shock music score, dumb dialogue and a sort of disco rock country band that telegraph's the plot for those of us the movie considers too stupid to get what is already the weakest plot I have ever seen. Ironically while the band gets on your last nerve too soon in the movie it was the only thing in the whole movie that came even remotely close to being funny and trust me that is sad commentary on the Dead and Breakfast DVD. Dead and Breakfast is a movie with a plot so weak that if it the characters threw the script away and totally ad-libbed all their lines Dead and Breakfast would have had a stronger more coherant plot than what was written.
This movie is just a total complete and utter waste of your good hard earned money. This movie is a waste of the kenetic energy it takes to load it into your DVD player. I am sad almost to the point of tears when I think of all the otherwise hard working electrons forced to give their all to produce or play this mess. If you must buy this DVD buy then get the (Unrated Edition). Sitting through Dead and Breakfast without the aid of powerful psychoactive medication is a assault to the intellect I would not wish on my most ardent enemy in life. Paying $17.99 for a copy of Dead and Breakfast is a kin to old skool highway robbery. Quite honestly Dead and Breakfast is a DVD I would not buy if it were priced at a mere 79 cents. Dead and Breakfast is a DVD so bad it is way too expensive at ANY PRICE! If you have money to waste buying Dead and Breakfast you are not only richer than me you have means that exceed the weath of the United States and all the other Western Industrialized Nations combined.
This Movie is called Dead and Breakfast but it should be called DEAD ON ARRIVAL! Those who buy Dead and Breakfast will find everything about it Dead On Arrival. You can buy Dead and Breakfast if you want but just remember I did my level best to warn you right here! If you buy Dead and Breakfast then as a famous cartoon character used to say, REMEMBER YOU ASKED FOR IT!
A Great Movie, If You're Into That Sort Of Thing..........2006-12-15
I too went into this movie knowing NOTHING about it. I just saw it on the shelf at Blockbuster and thought eh, it's worth a shot. My boyfriend I are fans of the zombie-comedy genre, and this movie really hit the spot! It's a great film, but I think you have to be into this sort of genre to really love it. The music is great and original, and really adds to the movie. All around, I thought it was one of the better low-budget (I'm assuming) films I've ever seen.

Amazon.com essential video
Like many other films by Canadian director David Cronenberg (especially Crash), Dead Ringers presents the cinematic and psychological equivalent of an automobile accident--you dare not look, but you can't turn away. The film marked a directorial breakthrough for Cronenberg, who was able to continue some of the themes explored in his earlier horror films while graduating to a higher, more critically "respectable" level of artistic sophistication. The film is loosely based, amazingly enough, on a true story about twin gynecologists who routinely traded each others' identities, lives and even lovers. Utilizing innovative split-screen technology (years before computer manipulation made such trickery much easier), the film stars Jeremy Irons in flawless dual roles as the identical brothers Beverly and Elliot Mantle. Their ability to instantly switch identities leads them to a shared relationship with a well-known actress (Genevieve Bujold) and, ultimately, a physical and psychological tailspin that sends them both to the brink of madness and death. The scenario suggests that both men are halves of a whole, and that one cannot exist without the other. But when Beverly pursues a kinky, drug-addicted affair with the actress, his more self-controlled brother is helpless to prevent their mutual decline. In this way Dead Ringers becomes a fascinating and stylistically clinical study of duality, and Cronenberg doesn't shy away from the dark and unpleasant aspects of the story. (One look at the movie's display of bizarre gynecological instruments and you'll know why women find this film particularly--and unforgettably--disturbing.) --Jeff Shannon
Description
Claire Niveau is in love with Beverly. Or does she love Elliot? It's uncertain because brothers Beverly and Elliot Mantle are identical twins sharing the same medical practice, apartment and women - including unsuspecting Claire. In portrayals that won the New York Film Critics Best Actor Award, Jeremy Irons plays twin gynecologists whose emotional dependency collapses into mind games, madness and murder. Genevieve Bujold, the Los Angeles Film Critics Best Supporting Actress choice,? is Claire. And David Cronenberg (The Fly) won Los Angeles Film Critics Best Director honors for melding split-screen techniques, body doubles and Irons? uncanny acting into an eerie, fact-based tale ?unnerving but also enthralling? (Desson Howe, The Washington Post).

A bit of a sick film with a great performance by Jeremy Irons.......2007-06-22
Jeremy Irons has a penchant for playing bizarre sorts of men. He played Humbert Humbert in Adrian Lyne's Lolita (1997) and the creepy Dr. Claus Von Bulow in Reversal of Fortune (1990). Here he gets to play two creepy guys. One is named Beverly. Now I ask you, if you had twins boys and you named one of them Elliot and the other Beverly, what did you have in mind?
"Dead Ringer" is an old title. There are a number of movies by that name (IMDb lists four; this one of course is "Dead Ringers"), and clearly the titles suggest twins. Genevieve Bujold plays Claire Niveau, a celebrated actress who has a fertility problem and a great desire to have children. Elly and Bev are gynecologists who work with barren women in more ways than one. She becomes Elliot's or Beverly's patient. She has an extraordinary uterus, which they explore--I know, I know, this is pretty funny in a sick sort of way. The movie in fact is sort of sick but not funny--at least not intentionally. But it is interesting--appalling but interesting.
Anyway, Claire has the obligatory affair with both of them without realizing that there are two of them. They do the doctor thing with kinky sex and pills. At one point she begins to get the idea that Dr. Mantle is a bit--she calls him schizophrenic, which is, of course, for all you shrinks out there, a bit of a misnomer for what she means. Yes, one is nice and one is not so nice, one is slick with woman and the other isn't, one is commanding and the other isn't, and yes it gets more complex than that by quite a bit. They are like siamese twins joined with a long umbilical cord.
The problem for our boys, who have played this game with women many times before, is that Bev, who is always taking (you know what kind of) "seconds" actually falls in love with Claire. And she with him. And she knows the difference, once she finds out that there are two of them. And she is not pleased.
I've already perhaps said too much, but this is the setup, and it is familiar. How it works out is really the key to this movie. Irons is very good and so is Bujold of course. Both are professional actors with a lot of experience. Claire is a feisty kind of character, primitive in some ways, but ultra sophisticated in others. And very vulnerable, pathetically so it would seem. However, she is also strong. A nice contrast that gives Bujold ample range to show off her talent.
David Cronenberg, AKA "the King of Venereal Horror," directs. He has a history of serving up violence as a means of seducing the mass audience. Here he foreshadows something to come with something like forceps and other scary-looking steel instruments illustrated on the screen as the opening credits roll. Frankly I feel the pain and I don't even have a uterus.
I was able to watch until Bev, now a pill-popping menace, about 95 minutes in, grabs the surgical steel instruments that he designed for use on a "mutant woman's body," jabs them into his coat and pants pockets on his way to a rendevous with his beloved Claire, she of the triple uterus. That was enough. Knowing Cronenberg's love of blood-splattered violence, I ejected the DVD.
But you might, at your own risk, watch the ending. I've got a feeling that the title "Dead Ringers" involves a pun. You can send me a note telling me what happens. Or not. Preferably not.
Jeremy Irons gets to exceed the range of most actors even over their lifetime in this one film, and he does it very well. If you're a big Jeremy Irons fan, you wouldn't want to miss this. Otherwise, I suggest the Disney channel, quickly.
Cronenberg's best film along with Crash..........2007-04-16
David Cronenberg is a remarkable filmmaker. He started out directing shclock, B-movie material, but those were infused with his own sensibility, which really came out in his later work. Dead Ringers is one of his best films, and a truly disturbing, powerful film about identity and siblings. Jeremy Irons's performance is probably the best of his career, even greater than his turn in Reversal of Fortune. He plays both twins equally well, making each twin distinctive in their own right. There is a very interesting story behind the casting of Irons. Cronenberg said in the commentary track on the Criterion DVD that he sent this script to all the A-list talent at the time, and they all turned him down. But all of the A-list talent were American actors who were "uncomfortable" playing a gynecologist. When Jeremy Irons received the script, he immediately said yes. It shows you the vast differences between the American attitude towards sex, and the British (who are known to be prudes, but are far more intelligent than Americans in sexual matters). Cronenberg's direction is masterful, building incredible tension throughout the film, and his mise en scene and colour schemes are some of the best in his career. The "instruments for operating on mutan women" segment is one of Cronenberg's most horrifying creations (these instruments were actually displayed in many art galleries after the film was made). This film was made before the advent of CGI, so all the twin sequences were done on film. They are seamless. This film, like many other Cronenberg works, haunts you long after the theater, and is still talked about day, and with good reason...
"We do women - this is our specialty".......2007-04-15
*** This comment may contain spoilers ***
Beverly and Elliot Mantle are identical twins and have shared everything during their entire lives - their interest in the women reproductive system which leads them both to become famous gynecologists, their apartment (they both love Italian furniture), their successful practice in Toronto, and their patients. "We do women - this is our specialty" says Elliot, more confident and self-assured twin who seduces the women he meets and then passes them on to his shyer brother. Enters Claire, a new patient with an extremely rare condition and soon both brothers "are doing her" without her knowledge. But Claire feels that the person she is with is sometimes different even if he looks the same - she is an actress and to pretend to be someone else is her specialty. After she finds out that she sleeps with both brothers, the movie becomes a very interesting dissection of the most mysterious connection between two people possible and the intense look at playing with and losing identity. The movie is written and directed by the master of intelligent horror movies, David Cronenberg, and it is very clever, dark, unsettling, and uncomfortable (the main characters are gynecologists, remember?). As with many Cronenberg's films, "Dead Ringers" fits well into the "fatal error of a mad scientist" sub-genre: "Everybody's a mad scientist, and life is their lab. We're all trying to experiment to find a way to live, to solve problems, to fend off madness and chaos" (David Cronenberg).
Jeremy Irons in a dual role is mesmerizing, giving not just one but two his best performances, so powerful and convincing that I felt a lot of sympathy for the twins instead of disgust and loathing for what they were doing to their patients and to each other.
Great Minds Think Alike.......2007-04-11
After creating the viscerally charged and bewildering Videodrome, Cronenberg took on a few projects with a bit more mainstream appeal: The Dead Zone, The Fly, and this film: Dead Ringers.
It's not just a clever title (in fact, the movie was going to be called "Twins" until one of Cronenberg's old producers, Ivan Reitman, asked if he could use the title for a movie he was working on with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito). The movie stars -- and stars again -- Jeremy Irons as twin gynecologists, Beverly and Elliot Mantle. Although they are physically identical, their personalities take divergent paths as they grow older. Elliot grows into a confident womanizer, a sponge for the spotlight. Beverly withdraws into books, confident in little else other than his research.
They have a good thing going. Elliot woos the women and whisks them off of their feet, and when he tires of them, he hands them off to his bro Bev. The ladies are, apparantly, none the wiser. None, that is, until they try the stunt on Claire Niveau. Claire is a melodramatic and needy type, who has a steady addiction to pills, but she's also a pretty popular actress -- a student of human actions -- and the difference between the two men's faces are easier to hide from her than the differences between their hearts. It doesn't help matters, of course, that Beverly falls in love with her.
Like many Cronenberg films, a wealth of subtext buoys the plot along, but in this case it's just as easy to enjoy the film even if you don't necessarily "get" it. The surface ripples show two men who struggle against the divisiveness of fear and longing, how they clutch at sanity and each other as if they were the same thing. Addictions to love, to drugs, to success, and to power send them spinning around each other in mutual orbits of decay. Each tries to save the other, but it's like bootstrapping in quicksand. Neither has the ground to stand on.
Those who look close enough will see elements of Cronenberg's typically fetishistic influences: bizarre tools, the polar strategies of lunacy vs. logic, weird biologies (Claire has a mutation that becomes a fixation for one of the brothers). There's more at stake than just school boy crushes becoming grown man crazies. There's also the unity of brotherly love, salvation in sinning, and something that Beverly creepily refers to as "inner beauty."
Most of the subtleties of the film are found in Jeremy Irons, who plays both brothers with a skill that can only be described as phenomenal. With the help of cutting edge special effects techniques (this before the days of CGI and digital enhancement), Irons' brothers are an amazingly convincing pair. His performances shatter into dizzying, multi-facted brilliance as the plot progresses, until it is sometimes hard to tell which brother is which. The stunning sureness of his approach to the two characters is, by itself, enough to make this movie worth watching and owning.
It is also recommended, of course, by Cronenberg's directorial talent for deifying degradation. His sharp-eyed lens is layered with images of blood-shot confusion and the clutter of offices and brains, but without a doubt it spells out something engaging, it pieces together the details of something altogether absorbing. Leave it up to Cronenberg (with the two-fold talent of Irons at his disposal) to mastermind a movie that gives a radiant, uplifting glory to a film that -- like almost all of Cronenberg's -- slowly spirals down the gutter of despair.
splendidly perverted, cruel, and grotesque.......2007-03-26
This is an absolutely wonderful entry into a world of fantasy and obsession with a pair of inseparable twins. What makes this so fascinating are the characters, who are fabulously acted by Irons and Bujold, in truly first-rate performances of people you would not ever want to meet and yet can't stop watching - the psychology is impossibly bizarre and completely believable at the same time. But an additional atout is the imagery, which is masterly and consistent, from the artistically conceived gynecological instruments to the painful-looking positions of Bujold and Irons. All in all, and I do not want to play the spoiler, this is a gem of the psychological marginalism.
Warmly recommended.

Though Bob (Benjamin) Clark made his mark on Hollywood with films as diverse as Porky's and A Christmas Story, he began his career with this imaginative zombie tale. Alan Ormsby (who also wrote Paul Schrader's remake of Cat People and directed the cult horror film Deranged) penned the script and stars as Alan, a flamboyant theater director who brings his company--whom he condescendingly refers to as his "children"--to a rotting graveyard on a fogbound island. There he begins a ceremony to raise the dead, but it's all an elaborate practical joke, just another mind game by the would-be demagogue... or so he thinks. As Alan continues his midnight games of manipulation and degradation, it turns out the joke's on him as the graveyard rises to life. The acting, though amateurish, is energetic and delivered with gusto, and the awkward, theatrical dialogue becomes oddly appropriate (if somewhat stiff) in the affected presence of preening Alan. The often-slow extended introduction pays off in a carnage-riddled zombie blowout, like Night of the Living Dead compressed into a half-hour highlight reel. Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things is the work of ambitious beginners, but they deliver the goods when it counts with solid low-budget effects and a well-directed finale that turns the tense humor into unrelenting horror.
The DVD mastering is unaccountably sloppy: images jerk and intermittently slow down, the action hiccups, and in the second half red and blue flares rim the right side of the picture. --Sean Axmaker
Description
The SET-UP: Five young kinky actors and their artistic director come to a desolate and nearly forgotten burial island, complete with a morbid history of MURDER, RAPE, CURSES and DEMONS. Alan (Alan Ormsby), the brilliant but bizarre Director of the company, has brought them to this foreboding place to dabble in witchcraft; specifically to dig up a fresh corpse and use it in a ritual ceremony which is supposed to raise the dead from their graves. The PAY-OFF: It seems as though Alan has really gathered his "children" here, only to play a practical joke on them and then to party the rest of the night away. However, the joke's on Alan. His bizarre ritual ceremony really does raise the dead from their graves...only they're in no mood to party! NOTE: "BENJAMIN" CLARK is really "BOB" CLARK, the creative director behind the hit films PORKY'S, BLACK CHRISTMAS and A CHRISTMAS STORY among others. ALAN ORMSBY, though he turned in what has been described as "...one of the most obnoxious screen performances in history!", has actually made a mark for himself as the screenwriter for such memorable films as MY BODYGUARD, CAT PEOPLE, KARATE KID 3 and PORKY'S 2.

THE DEAD ARE COMING FOR US........2007-04-27
I first saw this movie some 20 years ago on a TV show called " CREATURE FEATURE" and thought it was really cool than. supposedly, this takes place on an island where some movie director and his crew of wanna be actors arrive on and 2 of his crew take the caretaker hostage while he tries to concoct a plan to raise the dead while reading some verse from a book. This is considered to be a joke and Alan and his guys dig up a dead body to bring to the cottage their staying in to poke fun at it until the dead start to rise and the real fun begins.
ok movie.......2007-03-14
i got this dvd for 2 reasons : the last 20 minutes and cover sleeve.
children shouldent play with dead things.......2007-03-11
thank you for the dvd i like think your site was verry good
Good plot, bad actors........2007-01-10
I think that this movie has a good idea going for it, but the actors really drag it down. I think that it can be remade, and be a great movie.
Great 70's horror.......2006-08-17
I really like this movie. There's not a whole lot of action for about the first hour. The focus is on character development. But I found the dialog to be very engaging and clever, and I also thought the humor was genuinely funny. The acting is also pretty good for a B movie. There's a lot of buildup to the climax of the film, which really delivers.
If you like this one, also check out "Deranged" (1974), an Ed Gein based horror movie that Alan Ormsby also worked on.

Not as good as cold be.......2007-04-11
The way they portrayed Freddy with his mask was just no good. At the time it came out there should have been better effects and costumes though out the movie, overall disappointing but you should still see it if you are a die hard Elm Street fan.
It takes a woman to go farther than a father.......2007-02-15
It takes a woman to bring about this sixth episode. Rachel Talalay revives Freddy and gives him a new dimension. First he is revived through a boy and we may think we are back to the second episode. Wrong. We all start this sixth stage in our trip in a plane and then the nightmare comes. The boy finds himself in a teenage shelter, in other words a prison for teenagers because Freddy's target is the female psychiatrist. They all believe the boy is Freddy's son. Wrong again. The boy is only the caretaker of one mission : bring the female psychiatrist to Springwood which is only two miles away. There Freddy will get three more victims, all boys. He definitely is a male-child molester more than a female-child abuser. But this time, with the help of another psychiatrist, male and black, the woman is going to get into Freddy's head, which is possible because she is his daughter and she has plenty of common recollections with him. She gets him out of the dreamscape in which he is protected and overpowerful and gets him into the real world where he is mortal. The final fight will lead to his absolute annihilation with his own claws and a good old stick of dynamite, his own penetrating and raping tools turned back onto him with the penis-like dynamite stick as a cherry to top it of, and he finally loses his cherry. The film though is more interesting than just that. First it is modern, it has grown up along with the world and we have electronic games, colour TV, consoles of all types, hearing aids and many other modern gadgets. Second it has also followed the growth of teenagers as an age group and the teenagers in the film are from our modern time : they are definitely rebellious, have been marginalized by drugs and many other things, including the abuse from their parents, and are now controled by the police and other judicial institutions for delinquent teenagers. They are at least neurotic and can become psychotic in a minute, in the wink of a dream, when the real world becomes virtual, dreamlike, or even inexistant. But the film enables us to discover Freddy in his real life. He was married and had a daughter and yet at the same time had been the victim of adults and had developed a complete tolerance to any suffering. And here Rachel Talalay plays with us and introduces a blue-beard recollection in Freddy's daughter's discovering her father's torture chamber. Finally the technique used in the film has been updated to all kinds of modern special effects. This sixth episode though wants to be the end of the saga in its title and in its closing scene and song, though the last picture is still one of Freddy himself standing upright on his feet. It is well known that the strongest nightmares are forever and ever and ever again.

a bit of a let down.......2007-02-04
i heard through the grapevine that this was a 3-D movie, which intrigued me. upon purchasing this DVD, i found that this is not the 3-D version. the SFX in this movie bite, but only because they were meant to be in three dimensions.
it is a bit of a lame focal point, but the 3-d glasses play a part in the movie (don't worry, i won't spoil how!) but it would have been better to have both the 3-d and regular versions in this DVD. I then discovered that the Freddy box set has the original 3-d version with special edition glasses, which pissed me off no short of pissing, right after i completed my own 'nightmare' collection... oh well...
at least i got the special edition of the first 'nightmare'
ok, for the money.......2007-01-10
The movie has too many cameo's or how ever it is spelled, I dont like this Freddy or the second Movie the rest our good though.
The Franchise's Dead- The Final Nightmare.......2006-12-29
It is 10 years later (though after what is never mentioned) and Springwood has lost all it's children to Freddy (Robert Englund). Now he is looking for his long lost daughter Maggie (played by Lisa Zane), who as it turns out, is a youth councilor. After many deaths and Maggie goes into Freddy's dreams to discover the secret of destroying him, and brings him out of the dreams and finally kills him, for ever and ever; or at least until the next sequel.
This movie is the absolute pits. I hate to say it, because making movie, no matter good or bad, is hard work. But it just fails on every level. As a horror movie it's a joke; as a fantasy it's dull; and as a comedy (which they could have went for with a quick rewrite) it's just boring with stupid jokes and sight gags that are just too sick to be funny. In part 5 I said Freddy was his own worst enemy, but here he is just another cog in the broken down machine. In life Freddy was a child killer, and yet he never hurt his daughter, easily the kid he had the most opportunity to mess with? Then there was the cameos; Johnny Depp and Alice Cooper (as Freddy's abusive step-father) was OK, at least not annoying. Rosanne and Tom Arnold was way too much for me though. The only saving grace was Yaphet Kotto, who played a psychologist who specializes in dream manipulation, a skill that comes in handy. Lisa Zane was a good actress in "L.A. Law", but here she dose not convince me, or even act surprised with her startling revelation. The dream sequences are the absolute worst of the series, with Freddy riding a broom like the Wicked Witch of the West, or the stupid Nintendo death scene. And oh boy, the 3D sequence. If you don't have the glasses you're going to have a bad headache after watching it.
This movie was so bad on every level that a few years later Wes Craven came back to put the series back on track. This one is for die hard Freddy fans only; one of which I thought I was until Freddy died.
