Wes Craven's 1984 horror film is a better movie than it is generally credited for being. Forget the tawdry sequels; this highly original, almost surrealist work stars Robert Englund as a mutilated monster who kills teenagers during their dreams. Craven, who only directed one Elm Street sequel (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), takes the Hitchcockian step of layering in psychological explanations for the terror and then proving them all irrelevant in the face of mindless evil. The horror in the film is emotionally raw, in contrast to the overimaginative set pieces of most of the sequels that followed; and the final scene is as deeply unsettling as anything Luis Buñuel ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

Amazon.com essential video

In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers of Halloween), the son (Jason of Friday the 13th fame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of the Nightmare on Elm Street series were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive imaginations of the teen victims. The first film of the series, Wes Craven's truly intelligent and scary film, was so hugely successful it begat not one, not two, but six more sequels, each pretty much diluting the originality and horror of its predecesor. (Horror fans will fondly remember Drew Barrymore's assertion in Scream that the first Nightmare film was great but all the rest sucked.) Still, there's fun to be had in the remaining films in the series, seeing as a number of aspiring filmmakers cut their teeth on the continuing saga of Freddy. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Chuck Russell (The Mask) worked on the third installment, Dream Warriors (starring a young Patricia Arquette), and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) came to prominence with the ingeniously macabre fourth film, The Dream Master, coscripted by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Craven and original star Heather Langenkamp did return for the last film, New Nightmare, which presaged the tongue-in-cheek postmodernism of the Scream films and resharpened Freddy's ability to scare. --Mark Englehart

5 out of 5 stars Simply Thrilling.......2007-05-13

Talk about good old fashion Horror Flicks. After so many years have passed, I still get chills up my spine seeing this classics.

5 out of 5 stars the nightmare on elm street collection.......2007-05-13

this is a very cool dvd collection,it is not to scary and it has some funny parts and the best thing about it is that you can watch one part right after the other without having to go buy the next one.

5 out of 5 stars A well deserved 5 stars with one exception..............2007-03-29

I'd like to start things off by saying that, in my opinion Freddy is the best slasher icon to appear in the '80s. In almost every film, the acting is superb, and the special f-x are exceptional for the time. There is not as much gore as the Friday the 13th series, but a little more than the Halloween series.

Nightmare on Elm Street: by far the best of the series in every way
10/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge: by far the worst in the series 2/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors: Not the best, but definitely not the worst 6/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master: Better than the second and third 8/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child: Not as good as the fourth: 7/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy's Dead: One of the better ones in the series besides the first and last one: 8/10
Wes Craven's New Nightmare: I'm so glad Wes Craven is back to give Freddy his frightening kick back: 9.5/10

This is my first review....

5 out of 5 stars B.......2007-03-23

WE LOVE HORROR MOVIES IN MY HOUSE,AND SO THIS CLASSIC BOX SET IS GREAT. THE ARTWORK ON EACH DVD COVER IS UNIQUE AND REALLY COOL. A COLLECTORS DREAM OR SHOULD I SAY NIGHTMARE!!

4 out of 5 stars THE FIRST IS THE BEST THE BOX SET IS STILL A GOOD DEAL!.......2007-03-20

This is a good box set if your a fan of the series. I personally think that Jason is much scarier than Freddy. There are some creepy moments in the first nightmare, but after that they seem to get a little weird.

4 out of 5 stars The behind the scenes info is well worth the price.......2007-06-07

I won't go too in depth into the story. If you don't know who Freddy Krueger is then you've been out of the pop cultural loop for well over two decades. What I will say is this DVD gives a great deal of info behind one of the classic slashers of the 1980s. Finally seeing the two alternate endings as well as listening to Wes Craven's commentary on his best movie helped to deepen the respect I have for this masterpiece, and yes, this is an excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars Truly one of the best.......2007-05-31

Freddy's debut. This film has it all, scares, gore, blood, thrills, and Freddy in his best scariest movie. This is a Nightmare On Elm Street, pleasent dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever you do: Don't fall asleep!.......2007-04-05

You won't fall asleep during or after you watch these movies.
A revolutionary series of movies that every movie buff should own.

Freddy Kruger is the worst monster that you will ever run into in your dreams. Trust me when I tell you: if you haven't seen these movies you will be frightened for a long time after. Drink lots of coffee ...and what ever you do ...don't fall asleep!

3 out of 5 stars great movie but infifilm dvd version sucks.......2007-03-10

the infifilm version sucks (2 disc dvd) it paused alot while the other one disc version worked!

3 out of 5 stars Nostalgic for Generation-X . . . But Lost on Youngsters . . ........2007-02-05

I dig this film . . . BUT . . .

If you can imagine, only four of my twenty-six film-students have seen this work: and this is an advanced horror-film class!! So if you think this is a slasher-staple . . . apparently not with "Generation Y."

I was pretty excited to screen the film. But my students' luke-warm reception of Craven's work was pretty infectious (horror tends to be a communal experience like that!) Their boredom became my boredom...and though the jokes fell-flat with them, they did find the admittedly shaky acting to be humorous. In retrospect, I suppose Freddy works better as the "caricature" he has become than the half-baked (pun-intended) monster from the 1984 original. (I think the horror-enthusiast side of me loves Freddy best in 1987's "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" while the scholarly side loves the postmodern Freddy in 1994's "A New Nightmare" . . . yes, I realize I am being very Kellogg's "Frosted Shredded Wheats"!)

Many people post about the "killings" being spectacular. This is not entirely true. The first death is awesome -- no doubt! But Depp's death is beyond uneventful -- it is as though Craven drained his reservoir of ideas and decided that Depp's bed should consume him - it's pretty unforgivable as horror, but at least it's funny.

What is valuable about this film is that we have a "Final Girl" (see Carol Clover's "Men, Women and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film") that not only fights for survival but plots the death of the film's monster. Nancy becomes fearless . . . and a master-tactician. This progressive thinking is pretty impressive if we consider the conservative Reagan-years (1981-1989).

While Craven has developed his craft and produced more technically sophisticated films like "Scream" and "Red-Eye" (note that I did not say 'better"), "Nightmare on Elm Street" was a HUGE phenomenon in its time (and I think that says something about its horror legacy).

So though this isn't comparable to "serious" slasher-films like Carpenter's "Halloween" or Hooper's "Chainsaw," (but, seriously, was it ever trying to be?!) it is critical to the genre. So, prepare to be underwhelmed by the special-effects (if you are young and somewhat impatient) . . . but, like I tell my students . . . watch it so you can understand the genre as a whole:)

5 out of 5 stars My all time favorite one........2007-03-20

i love this one it is the best one i can watch it over and over again the only one thats better then this one is the original one.

5 out of 5 stars really fun and an awesome transition.......2007-03-14

this film is really really cool the whole thing reeks of the late 80's vibe and the story is really engaging. the death scenes are awesome (as always) and freddy is still hilarious. also there's a dog that urinates fire. seriously homie, how is that not crucial braw?

ok so kristen is out of the mental institution and so are jimmy and kincaid. the threat of freddy is gone (or so it seems), and all is well with kristen she has new friends who are introduced in this movie (most importantly alice and her new boyfriend doug). but for some reason kristen is drawn to freddy's dream lair much to the dismay of joey and kincaid who are constantly being pulled into kristen's dreams because she is scared, and so it seems with good reason. that reason being freddy's back and hungry for more teenage souls (awwww poop). in this installment of the nightmare on elm street seriese the torch is passed, for kristen joey and kincaid all fall victim to freddy[totally destroying nightmare on elm street 3's legacy :*( ]. but not before kristen can pull her new friend alice into her dream, and give her the gift of being able to pull people into her dreams with a little added bonus. will alice be able to find a way to vanquish freddy once and for all?

this is my favorite in the series if not simply because it has the only good dramarama song on the soundtrack(i'll give you candy, give you diamonds, give you pills, i'll give you anything you want hundred dollar bills. you know you wanna sing along everytime you hear it) then because i wanted to be just like alice's big brother up until like a few weeks ago(he's such a macho hunk with awesome hair). there's kung fu, girls lifting weights and turning into bugs, and a nerdy girl with asthma that gets totally destroyed in the face(who doesn't wanted to see that?). it's got all the dialogue you thought was the bees knees when you where a kid, a killer soundtrack, and some pretty good special effects that still hold decently strong even today. for any fan of the series this is a must have because seriously this movie owns you when you buy not the other way around.

4 out of 5 stars What is god doing in this nightmare?.......2007-02-15

This film brings little semantically. It is the direct sequel of the previous episode, with the same surviving characters who lead to a few new ones. The pattern is the same : Freddy kills a few teenagers and is finally stopped by one of them, a girl again. Yet this film is original in two ways. First its director is extremely experienced in that kind of frightening films. He is an expert in stringing together, one after another frightening elements and effects, and when fear is not used then it is grossness and we move to some level of disgust. Yet we are never terrorized, just horrified and disgusted. Why is that ? Because the audience targeted by the film bans the idea of terrorizing them. The film director doesn't want the film to be restricted. So the film is very careful not to show any unnecessary or just alluring flesh or skin. We are targeting teenagers, so please no sex. Yet in that line of extreme ability at interweaving frightening elements one into the other, the director reflects his time with a few elements that may be surprising for a 1988 film. The characters definitely smoke too much and quite very conspicuously, and yet this gesture of lighting a cigarette is systematically associated with a bad turn in the action. In 1988 we were starting to take measures against tobacco. This film is reflecting this anti-smoking discourse directed at teenagers. This element along with the sexless vision of these young people shows how the American society had changed within ten years and had become very puritanical, though it was going to go a lot further later on. This change, of course brought up by the director, is totally in phase with the second element I want to note here as a new development in the saga. It is the religious dimension of the film. The end takes place in a church. Freddy is destroyed by his own reflection in a piece of color stained glass from a broken color-stained window in that church. Freddy is destroyed by his own reflection and by the rebellion of the souls he had captured and he was holding prisoners in his own body. They tear him apart and finally rip his jaw off and so open the evading door they need to escape. And they do and go directly into heaven. This religious theme is in many ways surprising, and yet not so much. The American society in this 1988 period is slowly moving towards some kind of self-resourcing in christianity. The Christians born again were starting to call in the wings, and even to walk in the streets. That was the end of Reagan's presidency and the beginning of George Bush Sr's four years. The theme of religious purity was obviously growing, to the point of using a horror film as the medium to bring the message to teenagers. We then understand why they avoided any theme, element or detail that could have restricted the audience in the name of the protection against sex or even violence that is curbed to a symbolical minimum in this episode.

2 out of 5 stars Deserves 2 1/2 stars really.......2006-12-28

Kristian Parker (Tuesday Knight, replaceing Patricia Arquette) is dreaming about Freddy, even though other survivers from Westin Hills warn her to try to forget him. Finally Freddy dose manage to return from the dead (again) and finish off the last of the Elm Street Children, in rather quick order. Now it is up to shy Alice to stand up against Freddy, the Dream Master, and stop his latest (and most pointless) reign of terror.

This is the point in the series when things went wrong, and most fans agree. I saw how 'Elm Street 4' was hampered by a diretor and writers strike at the time, and it shows in a silly plot that makes little since (Freddy resurrected by flaming dog urin?). I will give it this though, Renny Harlin ("Cliffhanger" and "Die Hard 2") did as good a job as I think could have been done. At least visually looks like something, even if it is a neon light music video set; Freddy's boiler room looks like a Disney Land ride! The actors are just there, and not really very interesting. The exception is Lisa Wilcox's Alice, the real Dream Master as it turns out. Wilcox really brought a fresh faced innocents and toughness that was believable, much like Heather Langenkamp did in the original. Then there is Freddy. Robert Englund plays his once feared boogyman like Bozo the Clown. His jokes, puns and one liners killed me, and not in a good way. The special effects were OK, even of they were not logical to the over all plot (again, citing the dog peeing).

I guess it's worth seeing for completeness sake, just remember it's one of those 'it's so bad it's good' movie. Wes Craven was probably crying all the way to the bank with this one.

3 out of 5 stars It might be called THE DREAM MASTER but it's far from MASTERING it's own problems........2006-11-03

NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4 - THE DREAM MASTER is the most popular in the series. Sure, the first one will always be thought of as a "classic" but THE DREAM MASTER still holds it's own in the opinions of the fans. Coming out during a time when MTV was popular and the teenage Slasher scene was just hitting it's peak, Nightmare On Elm Street 4 is a prime example of how Horror movies were done in the 80's. Bright sets with neon colors everywhere, popular clothing (at the time) being acid wash jeans and Bon Jovi hair styles. All of this is quite enjoyable for the whole "retro" factor and in some Horror movie cases, actually add's to the brooding atmosphere of doom. Any Horror fan (especially those of the 1980's) will tell you that retro factor can only hold up a movie so far. Eventually you need something else to make it enjoyable. Personally speaking, I enjoy 1980's Horror movies for alot of reasons. The retro factor is of course there but I also look for other things to make a Horror movie truely great. First and most of all, the story has to be well written. This detail might not matter to most people (especially gore hounds and slasher fans) but for me, it matters the most. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a pointless "slash 'em up" flick just like any other fan of the scene. I just hold the story side of a Horror movie higher on my list of enjoyable elements than others. Another thing I look for in a Horror movie is the fear and gore factor. I like it when a Horror movie can make you feel a primal emotion such as terror. Such classic movies as THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACARE and DAY OF THE DEAD are really good examples of what I'm talking about. Well told stories and nicely crafted scenes of hardcore terror.

Now that I've said my bit about the 1980's Horror scene as a whole, lets talk a bit about NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4 - THE DREAM MASTER. When I was a little kid in the 80's, nobody scared me more than Freddy Krueger! He was the master of pure terror because of his dark nature and wicked style of grim humor. Freddy wasn't above making a wise crack right after doing the dark deed of killing a random teenager. Freddy is a horrible dream demon that haunts your nightmares like a ghost and then sucks out your soul. His burnt skin and rusty razor claws are truely the work of a mad man. Without a doubt, Freddy Krueger is the king of the 1980's Horror scene. He ranks up there with such classics as the Friday the 13th and Halloween series. Still, with all this priase twords Freddy we haven't talked too much about THE DREAM MASTER as a movie. There is a simple reason behind that, it's just not a great (let alone best in the series) movie. The main problem I have with Nightmare part 4 is the lack of details. Normally, Freddy Krueger is a psychopath full of rich story telling (it's no Shakespeare) and interesting plot turns. That isn't the case with THR DREAM MASTER. The movie starts off a couple of months after the terror that happend in the third sequal. Actually we can only guess because the movie never really tells us that small detail. Anyways, to make long movie short Freddy comes back from the grave without any real logic or reason behind it. In a dream a dog takes a pee on his grave and suddenly *POOF!* Freddy's back! It dosn't make sense and if you ask me, it's a cheap excuse to get him killing again. After THE DREAM MASTER, they made a fifth sequal (THE DREAM CHILD) which has a much better reason for Freddy to come back. I'm not sure why they decided to rush the forth sequal considering the fifth one has a logical reason for Freddy's return. Anyways, most of the Horror is spent in a Highschool which also takes something away from the dark emotions of the past sequals. We're treated to scenes of teenagers hanging out and wearing bad clothing. Like I said before, normally this isn't a problem but with the lack of details and story it really takes the movie down over all.

By no means is NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4 - THE DREAM MASTER a bad Horror movie. I've seen much worse in my time and compared to those, Nightmare part 4 actually does seem like Shakespeare! It's not the worst Horror movie, yet it isn't the best. That being said, you could easily skip the forth sequal and it wouldn't take anything away from the whole series over all. Personally speaking, I'm a huge Horror fan and I collect movies as a hobbie. I enjoy THE DREAM MASTER for what it is, dispite some small probelms here and there in terms of plot. THE DREAM MASTER however does have wonderful special effects (especially the ending) and Freddy himself is enjoyable as usual. The cast of teenagers are attractive enough and in some cases, they can actually act! It just makes you wish the film director would have thought of a better idea behind the story. Freddy Krueger is still the best Horror movie slasher of my time and his series will always be #1 in my book! If your new to the world of Freddy, start with the first movie. Although I normally don't suggest the first Horror movie of a series (sometimes sequals can be good, I don't want people to think the first is always the best), I think it's important for people to see where he started and how he's changed over the years. The Nightmare On Elm Street series is one of the best things from the Horror scene. Pearsonally speaking, the forth movie is the worst of the series. My favorite would have to be the third sequal.

I can only suggest THE DREAM MASTER for gore hounds and special effect junkies. Everyone else, start with part one and move on from there.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Survivors unite against Freddy Krueger.......2007-02-03

New director for this third episode. The modern world is growing and we are starting to have the information highway coming into the picture. The new architecture is very striking and powerful. We come back to a girl as the center of the film, but at once that girl is living with her mother and her male guests. But also at once she is moved to a hospital where she meets a whole gang of young people who are Freddy's victims. Freddy does not try to make anyone kill the others. At first he tries to terrorize them into committing suicide. Society reacts as can be expected : the kids are calling for some attention and their dreams and suicides are nothing but the symptoms of their guilt. A junior doctor reacts positively when a psychiatrist comes into the picture, and this psychiatrist is the surviving girl of a preceding episode. This leads to a psychiatric ward in a hospital with all these kids, and group therapy. This time Freddy has a group against him, a group that can remain united, or at least the survivors can, and they can start a war against this Freddy. The film also densifies Freddy Krueger with a mother who was a medical personnel in the old psychiatric ward of the very hospital in which we are. This wing of the building was closed when this young woman was by accident left behind in the ward surrounded by all kinds of crazy criminals. She was raped and many other things and Freddy is her son. Even worse she lost her head, though not completely and could then dedicate the end of her life to religion. She became a nun. The father of the young psychiatrist who has survived Freddy was one of those who burnt Freddy to death when he was caught after kudnapping and killing twenty children. His remains had never been buried. The father will finally accept to tell where the bones are. During that time the kids and the young psychiatrist are getting into the dream to save the others who have been taken and to get rid of Freddy. They will not all come back, but they will come back after Freddy's destruction by the junior doctor burying the bones and sprinkling them with holy water before covering them with earth. It is the first time the christian theme is brought in with holy water and a crucifix, hence with a parallel to vampires. The film then is a new twist in the general fabric invented by Wes Craven and it is quite effective. We must go on in this saga to see where we are going, where we are taken to. Be sure Freddy will live forever and ever, ever after the end of each film.

4 out of 5 stars Freddy really gets going.......2006-12-27

Freddy Krueger (Roberet Englund) has tracked down the last of the "Elm Street Kids" to Westin Hills, a mental asylum where all the kids are being treated for anti-social behavoir caused by their dreams (little wonder with Krueger after them). Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp returning from the original) becomes a resident at the hospital to in order to help the kids fight Freddy. But helping Freddy is the doubting thomas doctor (Creig Wesson) and their own prejudices against each other.

Easily the best of the early sequals Elm Strret 3 is actually the begining of the larger mythology of Freddy, as we are introduced to his mother Amamda, a nun who was raped by inmates years before, resulting in Freddy's birth. It also starts the trend of Freddy using the kids' weaknesses against them, like the recovering herion addict and the fantsy obsessed kids dying by their own devices. The idea of 'Elm Street Kids' seems streaching it a little, but I guess more than three sets of parents had to help kill Freddy, right? Director Chuck Russell really pulls out the stops on special effects, while some are a little hokey (though not a serious crime) the snake Freddy and pig gag really stand out.

The kids are really nice kids and are well played by the young actors, most notably a very young Patrica Arquette. I liked the kids and could relate to them and thier (real world) problems; alienation, authority figures not beleiving them, ect. This intallment also has a pre-stardom Larry Fishburne as sypathetic orderlie Max who, while he certainly dosn't beleive in Freddy, really likes the kids wants to help them. And of course there is Englund's Freddy. It is still early in the series so Freddy hasn't become a clown yet; though he's on his way. He is still dark and believably a serious threat.

This is really the start of the franchise here. While I loved part 2, this is really where Freddy became mythic. The only real problem with "Elm Street 3" was that is weas a dark fantasy-adventure, but not scary really. Oh well, that can be over looked.

3 out of 5 stars I'll Show You the Horror.......2006-12-04

My dad, ever the moralist, never allowed me to watch Freddy Krueger movies as a kid. He said that they led to the discrimination against burn victims, and that he would take no part in that. So I'm in catch up mode with this series. This is the second that I've seen in the series after I watched the original a few months ago. Overall, it is a step down, though not a massive one. Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) from the original is brought in as a savior of sorts to a bunch of kids in a psych ward placed there because of "suicide" attempts. Patricia Arquette, looking surprisingly hot in her younger days, takes on the role of Kristen who is our main character here. From there everything else is pretty much predictable. Kids try not to fall asleep, they eventually do, Freddy slices and dices. Only in this chapter the goofiness factor is turned up full blast. Look, there's Freddy up in the sky playing the role of puppet master, oh and now he has turned into a TV set, and now a creepy little doll. There is also this terrible little twist that these kids gain certain powers when they fall asleep. The scene in which they come together for a group dream so that they can show off their powers couldn't have fallen any flatter for me. I am also hoping that somebody could explain to me the scene in which one of the kids turns into the "Wizard Master" and shoots a very 1980's pre-CGI green lightning bolt out of his hand to destroy a murderous wheelchair Freddy had turned loose on him. . .because I'm at a loss. To me that scene captures everything wrong with this film. Also, the less said about the scene where Freddy's skeleton comes to life the better.

But under all this kookiness there are some good messages to be found here. We, of course, get the traditional, fight your fears and believe in teamwork. But we also get the more unconventional lesson of never listen to your elders because they don't know what the hell they are talking about. Throughout this film (and the original) every decision made by a figure of authority turns out to be dead wrong. Here the only things more evil than Freddy are the clueless authority figures who serve the kids up to him with their idiocy. On the flipside we also get the kids who are punished for "Overt sexuality" (shock!). One if left for dead with Freddy after chasing after an easy, eager blond. The director, Chuck Russell, does find time for a striptease first. I guess he'll be sex on Freddy's hit list. I do wish that I could go back in time and enjoy this film for what it is. But my eyes have seen too many movies and have turned critical on me. So I know that the acting here is bad and the special effects (which are used liberally) are so horrible your jaw will drop. There is a kinetic energy at work here that makes it an easy pill to swallow. I will also admit that the silliness here does cut both ways. Most of the kills are borderline brain dead, but they are also interesting and eye-catching. Russell wasn't shy about screwing this one up, and oddly enough I admire him for that. **3/4

3 out of 5 stars Don't watch the second one.......2006-12-01

For me, the second one was absolutely diabolical, and seeing as I'd just bought the seven disc set, I was angry, and reluctant to watch the rest. I was persuaded, and found myself actually enjoying Dream Warriors. It continues on a few years after the first one, and it's like the second one never happened, as there's no apparent reference to it.

Dream Warriors is made all the better for a higher budget and bringing back Heather Langenkamp. She's definitely an asset to the movies and although she doesn't appear again until the seventh movie (as herself, strangely enough), hopefully the movies will continue the same as this.

A very, very young Patricia Arquette appears in this, her first film, and thankfully she has managed to hone her acting over the years. She's laughable in this. Also look out for "Larry" Fishburne!!! Larry, good grief.

The story is basically simple: a young girl (Arquette) is put into a psychiatric ward, with others, who discover they're all dreaming about the same man. They find an understanding adult in the form of Heather, who was of course in the original. She's older, wiser, and specialising in this kinda thing. She tries to help him, but when she finds out Arquette's character can bring others into her dream, they agree to go in and tackle Freddy.

What makes this film better than the second one, is the deaths are becoming bigger and better. One girl dies being put through a TV during Critters - she dreamt of being an actress. Then there's the whole back story to Freddy. We find out his mother was raped repeatedly, and actually appears in the film - a little twist in the plot. He was also never properly buried, and needs to be buried in holy ground, and that will finally get rid of him. Obviously not enough to spawn another 4 sequels.

My suggestion is that you skip the second one, and move straight from part one to part three. Honestly, you will never know the difference. Definitely the best of the series so far. Look out for a severely phallic Freddy snake, and a very cool stop motion puppet.

2 out of 5 stars What if this guy got you pregnant.......2007-03-24

If ever there was a rallying cry for abortion this film should be it. Survivor from Freddy's last bloodbath Alice (Lisa Wilcox) is the recipient of his demon seed. Freddy thus gains control over the fetus' dreams and ergo control over Alice. But instead of taking the logical way out Alice insists on keeping the baby ("Grab your crucifix") and in the process provides the fuel the story needs to power through another useless sequel. At one point one character, Mark, even thinks and then recommends that she terminate the pregnancy which she rejects outright. Mark just rolls over, like he was the father to be or something, and says "OK we'll just find another way." What a lark! What follows is a battle for the heart and mind of the not yet born Jacob. Just think of it as a "Rosemary's Baby" for a younger, simpler generation.

The main problem this franchise faced at this point was that they felt every kill had to somehow be more awesome than the last. Early on there is a head-scratcher of a scene where Dan is turned into an actual Ghost Rider. And since they are tied to this idea that every kill has to supersede the previous one you begin to realize that this exercise in extreme silliness is only working against the films. They have become so far removed from reality that you can no longer take them seriously. I would argue that good ol' Freddy jumped the shark a few films back, but as I watched this one I just had this image of his jumping sharks, one after another, in hopes that he could possibly destroy the legacy of even the first film. That said this one is a minor step up from "Nightmare on Elm Street 4." Here they dig into Freddy's very past past and find out that he was the product of a rape that occurred at an insane asylum. Since Freddy has been messing with Alice's baby she enlists the help of his mother in hopes of reigning in the deranged serial killer. The whole thing has a very Jerry Springer-ish smell to it. Since "Nightmare on Elm Street 3" the formula has been about the same and they follow it here as well. Hero has friends who don't believe in Freddy. Said friends have token hobby (here diving and comic books). Freddy kills all of hero's friends using their hobby against them. Hero beats up Freddy. The parents haven't gotten any smarter with time, but here their role is less pivotal. In this one there is a scene where the first thing out of Alice's father's mouth after her boyfriend has died is him blaming her boyfriend for his own death. Classy. The focus has shifted away from the idiocy of the parents and more on creating a nonsensical world for Freddy to frolic in. The only rule in this game is that Freddy is all powerful. My friend, who insisted that I watch the entire series, claims this one to be his favorite. I blame it on the fact that he is a comic book geek and thus represented here. . .although I'm sure he would deny that connection. To me this is the second weakest with the original remaining the only one I can actually recommend. Freddy was running in circles and sucking wind by this point. At least Jason had the good sense to eventually move his freak show into space. **1/2

5 out of 5 stars This Freddy does not like mothers and hates fathers.......2007-02-15

This fifth episode brings together the story about Krueger's mother already slightly developed in the second episode, and the christian theme heavily introduced in the fourth episode. The film is still centered on Alice but she is growing older and older. She has finally reached high school graduation time. She has also reached the time when she can have a real boyfriend, spend the night with him and get pregnant from him. But she is a daughter raised by her father who has finally promised to stop drinking his sorrow away. This motherless situation is dictating the new turn in the saga. Alice becoming a pregnant mother before being a full mother she is attracted by this motherly side of the tale, hence she reintroduces Krueger's mother and we can see the time when this mother, still not a mother, is locked up with a hundred insane criminals, and then her being more than menaced. We can see her giving birth to an abomination. And this leads to the death of the father of Alice's child, killed of course by Krueger who makes him practically commit suicide on the road and ram into a truck. Krueger is jealous of Alice's boyfriends. Before the end of the film he will get one more in his claws. But the religious theme is strong all along. Freddy is born within the total destruction of a church, which corresponds to his rebirth in the film. Then his mother, the nun, has to be found, liberated from her walled-in prison for her to fulfill her mission : protect Alice and Alice's child from her own son and undeliver Freddy back into her womb as being his new prison to bring the film to an end. The mother seen as the cause of all this evil and at the same time the one that has to be punished for it forever in order for other people and women and children to be able to live free and unmenaced. That is pushing Eve's original sin and guilt very far indeed. That is pushing Mary's mediating role definitely too far. Even if we can believe it is a cathartic way of getting rid of our guilt and sexist vision, we must admit the treatment is quite rough and more than just plain pungent, in fact definitely violent, terrorizing and lined up inside and outside with the grossest possible visions. Even Alice and her child, conceived out of wedlock and who is going to be born to an unmarried mother and widow, are shown in the best christian light possible. She will keep the child and raise him the best she can. The last scene of the film is the vision of this baby raised by Alice, her best friend and her father, with the recollection of two young men, one his father, who have died for this child to be born. And sure enough the malediction is not far away. The rhythm of the film and the extremely rapid accumulation of horrifying, terrorizing and gross elements all of them intertwined together and interlaced one into all the others gives that film a real appeal and a deep effectiveness. We can feel terrorized at times and we definitely find the situation, Freddy Krueger and the whole world quite unbearably cruel to authorize such horror to exist in our mids
