When you consider its unfortunate production history, Cursed turned out surprisingly well as a werewolf thriller that horror buffs will appreciate. It's hardly the disaster critics made it out to be, but extensive rewriting, reshooting, recasting, and lengthy delays in production and release (including the elimination of R-rated gore to earn a PG-13 rating) clearly took their toll. The result is a fun but flawed monster-show that begins when a young talk-show producer (Christina Ricci) and her teenaged brother (Jesse Eisenberg) are bitten by a werewolf, setting the stage for a horror-in-Hollywood scenario that reunites director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson, creators of the Scream franchise. What could have been a classic horror comedy is instead a fairly solid, if unremarkable, exercise in Los Angeles lycanthropy, featuring werewolf makeup by Rick Baker (combined with CGI transformation effects, of course) and some of Williamson's snappy dialogue and trademark pop-culture references. The title of Cursed doubles as a description of this movie's ultimate fate, but in a market filled with straight-to-video horror fodder, it's anything but a lost cause. The supporting cast includes Shannon Elizabeth, Portia de Rossi and Joshua Jackson, so genre aficionados should definitely check it out. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars OK WEREWOLF ENTRY! WORTH 2 1/2 STARS AND A LOOK!.......2007-07-04

This is not a classic by any means, but I thought it had enough going for it to warrant a "worth watching" review. The story seems to teeter between serious and humor and that is it's major downfall. The cast does what is can with the material given to them. The DVD transfer looks good and worth checking out.

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Horror Film.......2007-06-14

Cursed is a horror film that does not take itself too seriously! I loved the scene where they describe the werewolf to the police using human terms since no one believes them when they say werewolf. An amusing time! If you like a horror flick with some comedy, then you should like this. If you like a horror flick that is all serious and believable, then you should probably pass on this. Also note that because of the kill scenes, the PG-13 version sucks, so if you want to see it, get the unrated version!

5 out of 5 stars Werewolves, support this film!.......2007-04-26

Well, as I am indeed an actual werewolf, I liked this movie. I found it to treat the subject of werewolves with respect, while maintaining the dignity and resoursfulness of the prey (Ricci and her onscreen brother). I especially liked the car scene where the girl is cut in half, it was very surreal and attention grabbing. The whole silver thing is a bit outdated, since everyone knows we can only be killed by fire or decapitation, but all in all, not a bad attempt by you humans. Good luck actually using anything in this movie to protect you from an actual werewolf though, lol

5 out of 5 stars Light-Hearted film about Werewolfs.......2007-04-23

This movie was better than I thought. It has a young cast of familiar faces from both popular films and TV shows. It's actually on of the better Wes Kraven films in a long time (Wishmaster SUCKED)...

The plot kinda reminded me of the LOST BOYS, where it envolved siblings confronting becoming Warewolves and had to destroy the warewolf that turned them.

The movie didn't have any lows and the story flowed well. The special effects were so-so (But to me, nothing beats the FX in regards to Warewolves found the Underworld films.)

It's a cool film to watch, all and all..

3 out of 5 stars Serious Werewolf movie not even! But it is quite funny IN IT'S CHEAP HIGHSCHOOL DRAMA CLASS WAY its ONLY redeeming virtue!.......2007-04-16

Cursed in some ways does not even attempt to be a serious Werewolf Movie so I can not grade it harshly for being weakly written. Cursed has a Movie of the Week feel to it. Curse is bubble gum for the eyes fare for those like me who are old enough to Remember weak lame but always good for a laugh old Network Movies of the week. The special effects are oh so average, the script is oh so predictable. The good part about this movie is it is done in a way that is oh so funny. While Cursed does try to take itself seriously on the surface it is almost a spoof on werewolf movies in general.

If you want some really good werewolf fare buy. Underworld the first installment. All the werewolves went lame in Underworld 2 which is not worth buying in my humble opinion. An extremely good werewolf movie is also, Wolf by Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Spader, and Kate Nelligan. Wolf movie rocked my werewolf flick world but good. I collect Werewolf movies and this one while weak in many ways is at least worthy of its place in my collection. Dog Soldiers is another great werewolf DVD.

If you buy this movie expecting grearness you will be disappointed. I havew lived long enough to know few studios \ producers \ directors do the background work needed to pull off a really great werewolf movie. To do a great werewolf movie you have to immerse yourself in the world of Lycantrophy and be willing to spend time feretting out the insightful details that make for interesting plot points. Good tight writing and interestingly well developed characters in some kind of conflict round out the mix in a well made werewolf movie. Most folks that truy love werewolf movies are real lycantrophiles and we don't warm to ready made werewolf junk thrown on film. Those who love a truely good werewolf movie would rate Cursed barely 1 star. Most Lycan lovers give Cursed 2 stars only because they were feeling unusually kind for a moment.

Cursed covers well worn old ground of werewolf fare and breaks no new ground at all. Cursed is good enough to be watched once easily. Best to reserve cursed for those times when an unruly group of your feral brain cells want to watch a movie while the rest of you is sleep or thinking of something worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars No werewolves?.......2007-02-24

Sorry for the lame title.

Anyway, here we have another J-Horror movie involving some sort of curse. It is very similar to Ju-On (or The Grudge for you simpletons) where people die after visiting a cursed place, this time a little convenient store run by two very strange owners and their two unfortunate part-timers.

The scares build a lot of intensity and anxiety (especially the chase scene). There is also one scene that focuses on three of the characters simultaneously, and the horror that they each in counter. Unfortunately, there is much left to be desired upon the conclusion of those scenes, despite the dramatic build-up. There isn't a lot of character development, so it's really hard to care for the things that happen to them. Some parts also left me thinking - "That was it?"

The plot is very simple. They give little explanation to the events that occur, but they never follow through with it. If you're looking for something deep, you might want to try a different film. This movie seems to be intended just for a few fun scares, but nothing mind-blowing or jaw-dropping. Just a simple curse and the outcomes of those unfortunate enough to shop at that store.

The CGI wasn't too compelling, but it's kept to a minimal. The music sounds really good, though. However, they sometimes used music that was inappropriate or silly for a scene, sometimes involving comedic sounds and such. Obviously the filmmakers weren't looking to make a serious film, but sometimes the awkward comedic sounds hurt the film more than it helped show that "Cursed" shouldn't be taken too seriously.

But if you're looking for a fun time, perhaps with friends who are looking for something that wouldn't require the use of more than two brain cells, than you might want to give this movie a try. It's mindless fun, but don't be expecting everything to be wrapped up tight by the end of the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Average Horror Film From Japan: Worth A Watch!.......2007-01-27

"Cursed," is an average 'B' horror film from Japan. And as many of the reviewers have noted, it doesn't take itself too seriously. The film was directed by Yoshiro Hoshino, and I personally don't think he meant the film to be taken too seriously. [However, I may be wrong]. Don't go into this film expecting too much, and you won't be disappointed. The films narrative revolves around a haunted mini-mart. The owners of the mini-mart are a very strange husband and wife. The owner (Etsuyo Mitani) and his wife (Osamu Takahashi) have a few screws loose: As they spend most of their time watching the stores video surveillance cameras.

Enter Nao Shinagaki (Hiroko Sato) who is a part-time employee in the store. The cash register is very strange indeed. Whatever the customers buy in the store, the same number pops up on the register: 666 or 999 yen. Moreover, anyone who buys something in this store eventually winds up dead. An evil spirit follows the victims home. However, each haunting is different, and the same spirit never follows the victims home. Furthermore, each of the hauntings and killings are completely different from each other.

The film is not too high on the scare factor, but there is a creepiness to the film nonetheless. Just don't expect too much in the scare factor. Also, the film is very low budget, and this shows in the film. The films main protagonist Nao (Hiroko Sato) begins to notice the strange happenings at the mini-mart, not to mention the odd and very strange owners of the store. There is not much in regards to great special effects. However, the film is worth watching. Also, there are no special features on the DVD, as it is pretty much bare bones. Recommended for those who love J-Horror. However, you might want to rent it first.

5 out of 5 stars Love this movie.......2006-10-28

This is one of the gems of receint horror movies. 95% of the ones I see, especially the American ones are over the top in gore, but not actually scary at all. This one, you only actually see one death. Every thing else is done with music, mood, or shot. Completely love this flick. Pays hommage to many other movies, but mostly feels Hitchcock to me.

Shots are completely georgous, music fits the mood completely.

Can't recommend this flick any more. Origional, fun, funny, tension building...

Want to shout at the dude in the ball scene every single time I see it, "Don't go down that freaking hall!!!!"... and have watched the movie like 30+ times now. Most other movies I buy, I think I might watch them like 5-10 times, but this one is the one I throw in when anyone is over... "Hey, have you heard of this one.. you have to see it!!!"

5 out of 5 stars wow it was great! dont listen to the kids review...HAHA.......2006-08-06

ok . it was very good. yes the plot seems a little blah but it wasnt. the plot is good and the killings are good to. anyone who buys something from the store dies. Everything they buy all adds up to 666 or 999 ...clever i would say. It has never been done before and it doesnt involve a girl with long black hair.
it freaked me out on a few parts. Great movie!! u gotta see it!!
Everyone i watch it with says it is great!! dont listen to that kids review.....it is not lame at all.

2 out of 5 stars What the hell?.......2006-05-05

Product Description

In 1302, king Philip the Fair of France staged a coup against the mighty order of the Templars, which he considered to be a state within the state. The Grand Master was accused of sacrilegical practices and burnt at the stake. According to the legend, from the stake the Grand Master cursed the king and all his descendants. In fact, the king himself would soon die, and all his three sons would succeed him, but each only for a couple of years and each dying without issue. Therefore, these kings are often called "Les rois maudits", the "cursed kings". The series describes the lifes of some common people during the reign of these kings, when France was struck, inter alia, by a terrible famine and by plagues. It is beautiful pageant of Medieval Life. The video would be an ideal educational tool for the teaching of French and European history.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Strikingly disappointing.......2006-05-12

I waited years to see this series, and I couldn't believe how awfully poor the production is. Even for something made in the 70's. Any high-school drama class could do much better. At least they'd think of including subtitles! Couldn't watch more than 20 minutes of the first book. Laughed a little at the ridiculously reddish Robert D'Artois and his unconvincing acting. The worst part of the experience was that neither amazon.com nor the sellers (inetvideo.com) accept returns. Guess the garbage can will have to be it's destiny.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2005-12-08

Indeed, this is a masterpiece. I saw this when I was 15 and simply fell in love with it. I then proceed to read the seven books (the seventh one has been written some ten years after the fact and tells about the whereabouts of Jean, the supposed living heir to the throne of France, son of Guccio and Marie).

Then, I had the pleasure of seeing those Rois Maudits almost once a year for ten years since French Canadian public TV had bought it. We almost had formed a fan club for Robert D'Artois (fabulous Jean Piat).

It is by far the most intelligent way to learn about that period of French medieval history and although one might argue that it is not totally accurate (of course, Druon fantasized about the assassination of the son of Guccio Bagglioni and Marie de Cressay who took the place of the son of Louis le Hutin and la reine Clémence, which led to the theory that there was a male heir to the throne of France, meaning that the Guerre de Cent ans wouldn't have been) but all the surroundings - language, costumes, habits and customs - are very accurate to the period.

To those who think the production is lame, might I say that it is a parti-pris of mise-en-scène. French production can be lavish and grandiose, but Barma wanted to keep it minimalist, intimate and simple so one would concentrate on the human drama, not on the décor. It was not a matter of making a spectacle of it; it was a matter of scrutinizing the absurdity of life as a common denominator amongst the powerful, the meek, the strong, the weak, the victor and the loser.

I just saw the remake they did of it (yes, alas, even the French are struck by this sickness of the remake). Those who were put off by the lack of luxury will enjoy that version better. But for me, the charm is broken. I don't feel anymore as if I was hidden somewhere behind a curtain observing the life of the rich and famous in medieval times. And although I admire immensely Jeanne Moreau, for me there will always be only one Mahaut D'Artois: Hélène Duc. And I will still be in love with Jean Piat as Robert D'Artois, even thought I think that Torreton is a fabulous actor. You don't fill those red boots that easily.

Lastly, for those who are chagrined by the fact that the DVDs are not subtitled, I'd just like to say, thought luck. You can't imagine how many excellent series are not subtitled (in French) when released on DVD (I've been looking high and low for David Copperfield with Daniel Radcliff to no avail. I guess I'll have to wait until my daughter knows English better... and that is not such a bad thing after all.).

1 out of 5 stars A 5 star production but for the lack of English subtitles.......2004-10-26

I waited for years to see this on DVD, having watched the series on BBC TV - in French with subtitles in English. As soon as it appeared in France, I ordered it and anticipated the pleasure of seeing it again. Alas and merde, the lazy, arrogant so-and-sos who had made the DVD version had omitted to include English (or any) subtitles. What a large potential market they have missed. If they wanted to promote the French language, English subtitles would have taken this production to a far wider audience that the francophone one. Ah well ...

4 out of 5 stars Great story, good acting -- too bad about the production.......2004-10-24

This French television production of Maurice Druon's famous hexalogy has a great deal to recommend it: most pleasurably, for those accustomed (or resigned) to the megalomaniac meddlings of Hollywood, it is *extremely* faithful to the original books, right down to the dialogue. It is also, by and large, well executed; although the gentleman playing the central character, Robert d'Artois, has a tendency to overact (possibly because of M. Druon's repeated characterisations of him as larger than life).

Unfortunately, it has two large strikes against it.

One, mentioned by other reviewers, is that there are no subtitles. One has to wonder at the cause: indifference to foreign sales, arrogance (let them learn French), or simply laziness?

The other is that the entire thing is apparently shot in cheesy studio sets. Even quite modest settings like council chambers are unconvincing. I didn't expect a cast of thousands, but they can't even manage the forest scene where Philip the Fair collapses.

Even more irritating than the visuals, though, are the acoustics, which never change, whatever the scene. Even when it's supposedly the streets of Paris, there are no background noises, nothing but the dialogue of the principals.

Can it have been done on a shoe-string budget? A major production of a famous book by an Academician (as the titles do not neglect to tell us)? Surely not. Some comments on Amazon France attribute these characteristics to the age of the production (1972), but Elizabeth R, from the same era, is far more professional.

However, this is comparing it with the very best. By and large, the fine acting and the colourful characters and costumes make it more than worthwhile -- if you speak French! -- to catch this convoluted, fascinatingly true historic pageant of power, violence, love, hate, intelligence, stupidity, treachery, nobility, venality, and (of course) sex.

Incidentally, there are six (not seven) volumes of "The Accursed Kings" books in English, corresponding to the six episodes of the video:

1) The Iron King
2) The Strangled Queen
3) The Poisoned Crown
4) The Royal Succession
5) The She-Wolf of France
6) The Lily and the Lion

If you read these first, you will be able to get through the videos with only schoolboy French.

The 7th book, Quand un roi perd la France ("When a King Loses France"), appears to have been a later addition, not filmed and not translated into English.

Update 2007
=========

I now gather that sets and costumes were deliberately kept minimal, to give the audience the feel of a small theatre production; fair enough (although I would have thought that a small theatre used cheaps sets because it had too, not because it wanted to).

Also that the 2005 remake has realistic sets, CGI blood and guts, and (with the illustrious exception of Gérard Depardieu) inferior acting (but still no English subtitles!).

I think I'll stick with the good acting.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary and historically well documented.......2004-09-05

I saw the series in Mexican TV many years ago. It was translated to Spanish. I wish I could find those videos. I supose the Mexican TV network translated them and filed them or returned them. They never sold them. I had also read "Los Reyes Malditos" (that is the title in Spanish) by Maurice Druon. The series should have subtitles in other languages and not be only in French, so that those who do not speak French and are interested in the story of the Valois kings and the Kinghts Templars could understand it. The story is very well told and quite well documented. The costumes, settings and photography are incredible. They transport you to the France of those times.
If you understand French buy the DVD series. If not, at least read the books. The title in English is "The Accursed Kings" (in 7 volumes). The whole Valois dynasty and the French Aristocracy of the times is portrayed with all their pride, their flaws and their glory. The cruelty of Robert d'Artrois and his greedy aunt are shown in several chapters. At the end, King Philip, badly advised, has most of the Templars and thier Grat Master Mornay, killed and tortured in search of their alleged treasure which has never been found. Mornay while burning at the stake cursed Philip until the 13th generation and summoned him, Enguerrand de Marigny and the Pope to appear before the tribunal of God. All of which came to pass exactly as foretold. De Marigny, King Philip and the Pope died whithin the next 12 months, and the dynasty was indeed cursed until the last Valois generation, the ill fated and depraved children of Katrine de Medicis and King Francis. Both the books and the DVD series are excelent work and I would recommend them to anyone who wants to learn history in an entretaining manner.
