Stanley Kubrick's The Shining is less an adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel than a complete reimagining of it from the inside out. In King's book, the Overlook Hotel is a haunted place that takes possession of its off-season caretaker and provokes him to murderous rage against his wife and young son. Kubrick's movie is an existential Road Runner cartoon (his steadicam scurrying through the hotel's labyrinthine hallways), in which the cavernously empty spaces inside the Overlook mirror the emptiness in the soul of the blocked writer, who's settled in for a long winter's hibernation. As many have pointed out, King's protagonist goes mad, but Kubrick's Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is Looney Tunes from the moment we meet him--all arching eyebrows and mischievous grin. (Both Nicholson and Shelley Duvall reach new levels of hysteria in their performances, driven to extremes by the director's fanatical demands for take after take after take.) The Shining is terrifying--but not in the way fans of the novel might expect. When it was redone as a TV miniseries (reportedly because of King's dissatisfaction with the Kubrick film), the famous topiary-animal attack (which was deemed impossible to film in 1980) was there--but the deeper horror was lost. Kubrick's The Shining gets under your skin and chills your bones; it stays with you, inhabits you, haunts you. And there's no place to hide... --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars This Is It........2007-06-29

Yeah, this is it. This is the greatest movie ever made. If you don't think so, then you must not comprehend the sheer importance of any philosophy whatsoever(even if it's no philosophy at all) (don't get confused yet!)You may find this review minimalist, but that is simply due to the straightfoward (actually, not so straightforward) brilliance of this highly intelligent, and realistic picture. People are mean. Jack is mean. Women are scared of mean and angry beasts. Wendy is scared of the mean and angry beast that is her husband. Jack breaks down the door to the other side with his ax. I like to think of Wendy(the bathroom) as the super ego, the door as the ego, and the room with jack as the id. The room containing THE BEAST(which is Man himself) is much larger, and he breaks through, the id thus prevailing, as in reality it obviously does. I watched this film once. It is the gretest use of celluloid, and any other substance in this universe until this day. 7 years later one frame hasn't been forgotten, and I keep figuring things out in my head as I contemplate. I oughta watch it again sometime. It's kinda like Eraserhead for a King.
-"Wonderful party, isn't it?" (that's about how the white men kill the indian settlers, for the hotel is on Indian ground, and then they metaphorically bathe and party in their blood, for the elevator blood is that from the mass genocide of the original sttlers, and natives, and the white men just party, with their lavish gowns and Jack Daniel's(which Jack drinks, in fact yeeeaaahhh!)) Oh! The Horror!

I had to watch this! Two years ago I embarrased my Mom over
the movie The Fury(DePalma)and screamed and made her take me
to the bathroom(woman's too)to calm me down and get her $$
back for unused tickets. Now it's two years later and I am in
the same boat!I love horror films, and did than too.But mostley

Jack was scary and Shelly Duvall who for the T.V. trailer scared
the living HELL out of me for I thought she was a witch, walking
up the stairs with the big MICHAEL MYERS knife! But to tell you
all the truth,I was able to handle all that, yes the old lady
in the tub too! What got me than? What made me sleep with the
T.V. on till 2:00am?What made me have my Chris Reeve P.J'S.

It is soooo FRIGHTNING! The title track,Danny riding his Big
Wheel,Danny going to get his fire engine, those DAMN two lil

of 5 stars for me.I really wanted to point that out for I have
read alot of the reviews for this and they all touch things
like the brilliant directing,to the superb acting,to evan the
elaborate hotel.I did not however read about the music???

5 out of 5 stars The essential horror film.......2007-06-08

The Shining is one of the greatest films I've ever watched. Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece showcases some of the most suspenseful movie moments ever to be seen, and Jack Nicholson's character is simply amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Movie!.......2007-05-25

This movie was the scariest I have ever seen! I am serious! Jack Nicholson is the perfect Jack Torrance!!!! He plays his character so sphyco-like! It is one of my favorite movies ever!!!

5 out of 5 stars Jack Nicholson Is Gonna Bash Your Brains In!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-08

This movie is one of my all-time favorite movies. After I watched this for the first time, I watched again. It's one of those movies that everytime you watch it, you find something new. At first, I was so freaked out by everything. But now, everytime I watch it, I get more freaked out. I get so freaked out, I start to laugh. It's just so insane. Steven King did not like this movie. That tells you 1 thing: he's a great author with a terrible taste in movies. This is my second favorite horror movie ever, right behind Halloween. I can't find anything wrong with this. Jack Nicholson gives one of the best performances I have ever seen in any movie. You actually get scared of him. Shelley Duvall also gives a very convincing performance as most of the time she is screaming or shes in silent shock. The big thing about this spine-tingler is the atmosphere. The music literally sends chills up your spine. Another thing that I love is it seems like the hotel is a character in on itself. It's so looming and big and quiet. There are some scenes that are extremely scary because they are so random and they make no sense. There is one scene where Duvall is looking down a hallway and she sees a guy in a suit and a guy in a bear costume doing something sexual and preverted. I don't even know what they were doing, but it scared the hell out of me. This movie is just so chilling from the little kid Danny to the two little girls to the blood flowing from the elevator. It never stops. It's relentless. Hide the children, hide the axe.

Uncomfortably close to Ben Hecht and Alfred Hitchcock's film Notorious, this World War II drama (based on a novel by Susan Isaacs) concerns a love affair between a spy (Michael Douglas) and a secretary (Melanie Griffith) that goes south when duty turns him cold and pushes her into dangerous, behind-the-lines intelligence work. Liam Neeson plays the gentleman Nazi unwittingly providing Griffith with cover as domestic help. The best parts of the film are the twists and turns in the romance (Douglas is very good at playing a character who can turn off all feeling at will) at the beginning, while the German scenes are less compelling despite such high stakes for the heroine. The climax--taking us back to Notorious whether it wants to or not--is quite gripping, largely due to Douglas's performance. --Tom Keogh

Description

I stumbled across this movie at a VHS blowout sale many years ago and fell in love with it.
A little known film starring Melanie Griffith as a secretary turned spy and a "real" spy (Michael Douglas) during WWII.
Now you can own this film on DVD...so what's stopping you?!?

5 out of 5 stars If you love spy/love stories, Shining Through is for you...........2007-04-02

Shining Through was one of the best espionage stories I have ever seen. It is a accurate to the history, costumes, speech, and setting. The main characters played by Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffith had an chemistry that matched those of 1930 black and white espionage movies. I can watch this film over and over and never get tired of seeing it. In my opinion, it was Melanie Griffth and Michael Douglas's best perfoamce ever. I waited 10 years for this movie to be released on DVD. Buy it...you will not be disappointed. The book by Susan Issacs was equally fantasic to read. The movie surpassed the read which is unusal.

5 out of 5 stars Old time Hollywood.......2007-03-19

this was a great trip down memory lane. When actors actually acted!

5 out of 5 stars Spy & Love Story.......2007-01-12

This is one of my favorite DVDs. It's set between the USA and Nazi-Germany about 1945. Melanie Griffin and Michael Douglas are the primary actors, of course, with great supporting actors/actresses. Melanie is half Jewish, living in Queens, in search of a job. While looking for a secretary job, she gets the not-good-enough treatment because she's not from Vassar. Things change quickly, when they hear her speaking German to a cleaning lady. Just so happens that the head honcho (Michael) needs an interpreter secretary cause he can't speak German. Turns out old Michael is a secret spy for the USA and makes trips back and forth to Germany and needs letters translated and such.

When one of the other spies gets whacked by the Nazis, Melanie decides she wants to go into the spy thing for the US, so she can check out her Jewish relatives, last seen in Berlin, and maybe get them to safety in the US, somehow. She manages to even mix in with the German elite. Liam Neeson is also great as a high-ranking German officer. And John Gielgud is a spy too. As always, he is outstanding in everything.

There are great plots, characters, twists and turns, and lots of suspense. It's a spy thing, run-and-hide from the Nazi's (who are snoopy little suckers), get the secrets, and get out alive type movie. It's also a love story, cause Melanie falls in love with old Michael along the way and he acts like the coldest mackarel in town. Of course, if I tell you any more, I'll have to shoot you, cause it's a SPY movie. (DUH!)

I've watched this movie a bah-zillion times. It is really great.

The Brady Bunch Movie
The big-screen version of the hugely popular 1970s television sitcom takes an original angle: instead of simply re-creating the old series, the film spoofs it by presenting the merged family as blithely unaware that fashions and customs have changed in the '90s. Shelley Long and Gary Cole are hilarious as the ultra-square yet libidinous Mr. and Mrs. Brady, Christopher Daniel Barnes is an ideal Greg, and Christine Taylor seems practically cloned from the original Marcia. But director Betty Thomas (Private Parts) shifts the emphasis away from comparisons between old and new Bradys and concentrates on quasi-surreal parodies and set pieces featuring the Brady kids doing their spirited, singing thing for a disbelieving public. Smart, sharp, and happy to share its conspiratorial mood with an appreciative audience, The Brady Bunch Movie is a kick.

A Very Brady Sequel
This second ironic send-up of the old Sherwood Schwartz sitcom is even funnier than The Brady Bunch Movie. Shelley Long and Gary Cole return as the married heads of the merged family known as the Bradys, and Christopher Daniel Barnes and Christine Taylor reprise their roles as eldest stepsiblings Greg and Marcia. As with the first film, the clever premise finds the Brady clan caught in a kind of '70s time warp, while the rest of the world has moved well into the '90s. Greg is still looking for a "groovy girlfriend," Mr. Brady thinks the idea of a cable that sends 50 channels to one's TV set must be a joke, and Mrs. Brady spends hours at the beauty shop only to look exactly the same as she went in. There's a plot involving an imposter (Tim Matheson) who claims to be Carol's long-lost husband, but the real charge in this comedy comes from the way these pseudohip characters deal with sexual taboos (is there any real reason that Greg and Marcia shouldn't get it on?) and the incredulous reactions of other people. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Why didn't they make a third!!!.......2007-04-17

Now I normally despise remakes of old tv shows, but the Brady Bunch movies are different - they don't "do the same old thing" with updated sets and characters nothing like the originals...

...they are the original characters surrounded by an updated reality.

The movies are parodies of the tv show they pay homage to, but at themselves as well. They are not a desire to modernize old characters that some dilettante dingbat thinks modern audiences would appreciate (hint, modern audiences DON'T), but the writers actually did something creative without losing the essence of the original characters. They knew the charcters and how to fit the new style comedy. They have the surreal spark that actually makes doing something with an old premise worthwhile. And such a mix is a rare treat; that most tv-made-into-movies creators just cannot even begin to grasp.

The movies themselves are a handful of vignettes from original TV episodes; but warped with modern day society - including puns that would otherwise be deemed vulgar, come off surprisingly inoffensive because these characters are still in the 1970s and the rest of the world is in 1995 (or 1996).

Well, there are some differences - nobody expected the movie's writers to also incorporate the actual actors' behind-the-scenes moments into the movies as well; it has been said that the actors playing Marcia and Greg may have dated, so lo and behold the writers turn Movie Marcia and Movie Greg into doing it. This is somewhat perverse, but because we all know it's a self-referential homage, the end result is more hilarious than vulgar.

Of course, there are the DVDs themselves - the 5.1 Dolby sound is terrific, and the visual looks colorful and crisp, even if there are some periodic artifacting defects. Nothing major. And it's in 16:9 enhanced format, so I'm not going to complain.

The DVD releases are solid, there's little that could be done to improve the quality, and it's a shame a third Brady movie was never made. And it's a shame so many old-tv-to-movie shows are even given a first shot with their "movies by numbers" ineptitude.

5 out of 5 stars brady bunch movie.......2006-12-25

back in the day when jan was all like "Marshs, Marsha, Marsha . . . it's always all about Marsha!" it was great -
in the film you see the underlying Pschotic Break happening as the voice tell her what to do -
the new film versions of old shows bring in quality science -
what Lost in Space moive does to justify the classic timetravel paradox -
this here film does to explore modern thought on abnormal psychology
it's like the same entertainment we grew up with with all our education in human nature mixed in
finally the 60's and 70's have grown up with us noe having th skills to present a great story without spaceships on strings and see how a family can remain in there own personal timewarp

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Deal....First Movie takes the cake!.......2006-11-07

I am a die-hard Brady fan. The first movie is hilarious. Perfect movie to watch on a rainy day or when it's so cold out, all you want to do is relive your favorite Brady movies in these funny satires. In my opinion, the first movie is much better than the second. However, there are a few funny parts here and there in the second.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Brody is Bull.......2006-05-31

I love this movie, but this review is not about the movie itself. It is about the review "Brody "Brodyman" (Amity Island)" wrote. It was complete and utter bull that needs to be taken off this website. Brody himself needs to be removed as well, looking at many of his other reviews, which are quite gross, creepy, and uncalled for. So those of you who want to know the truth about this movie, I suggest you buy it because it really is hysterical. But obviously Brody was talking about his own family bunch, because none of what he said was true about this movie.

4 out of 5 stars 30 years later... Still poking fun at Mike & Carol.......2004-09-17

Shelley Long (as Carol), Gary Cole (as Mike) and Christine Taylor (as Marsha) were born to play these roles. The rest of the cast is great too (no-name Jan, Jennifer Cox, has some great lines and confused looks). Gary Cole nailed all of Mike Brady's mannerisms, voice inflections, and all around character to a flipping tee. Shelley Long was a great choice and she played the part of ever upbeat and quirky Carol beautifully. I couldn't have chosen two better actors to play Mike & Carol - these two performers knew their charactors like the back of their hands. For those of us who grew up in the late 1960's and 70's when the Brady's were on prime time TV - these movies are a great flashback. The Brady's are still stuck in their 70's time warp with all of America changing (1990's style) around them. The house interior and backyard scenes were just as I remembered them. While each of these movies are not deep or valuable as far as the material goes... the entertainment value in my book is still high. These 2 movies were just plain fun to watch and I found myself laughing out loud many times. The "Sequel" is equally good and just as funny. Cameos by most of the original cast and a few other stars including Michael McKean (Lavern & Shirley's "Lenny") and Davey Jones and The Monkees. DVD extras are minimal, but worth it on the low price alone.

Stephen King's The Shining is a new adaptation from the author himself, made for television, that bears very little resemblance to the 1980 Stanley Kubrick version. That's not surprising since Kubrick threw out most of King's novel and presented his own version of the story. Here King redresses the balance in a miniseries that follows his original almost to the letter, and manages to be effectively creepy despite the budget and censorship limitations of the TV format.

Stephen Weber takes over the role of Jack Torrance, the caretaker who slowly descends into madness in the haunted Overlook Hotel. His performance is as far from Jack Nicholson as you could get, with his insanity building slowly and menacingly rather than being virtually mad from the get-go. Rebecca De Mornay is superb as Wendy Torrance, struggling to hold her fragile family together amid the spooky goings-on. Young Courtland Mead plays Danny, whose unique gifts give the story its title, as one of those infuriating TV brats who overacts left, right, and center. Fortunately, there are enough creepy moments and a number of frights to hold the whole thing together, the woman-in-the-bathtub scene being a standout shocker. Sure, there is nothing quite like Nicholson's "Here's Johnny!" moment, but this is the story King wanted to tell and it still shines brighter than most of the other recent screen adaptations of his work. --Jonathan Weir

5 out of 5 stars This is the "correct" telling........2007-06-29

Perfect. Not to knock Kubrick's version, but THIS is the movie based on the book.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-06-03

Bad acting, the father is never scary. The only "good" thing about this movie is that it tells the story more accurately than the first version, I cannot read books, so this movie explained the situation much better. Still, it's so boring you'll fall asleep.

2 out of 5 stars This is a renter.......2007-04-02

Stephen King should stick to the printed word as every movie he's ever directed has run the gamut of mediocre to poor. The Shining falls into the mediocre pile fortunately, I guess. I know King was very critical of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 movie and so decided to redo the story to be more faithful to the book. Big mistake. Some people should write and others make movies. It's a rare individual who can do both and Steve-o isn't one of them.

This King directed mini-series has many flaws. Not least of which is the wildley inapropriate casting and bad acting. Rebecca DeMornay is tolerable as Wendy but nowhere near as powerful as Shelly Duval's Wendy from the original Kubrick movie. Duval made Wendy a bewildered character who discovers an inner strength she didn't know she had. Her Wendy experienced growth, Demornay reads her lines well. Stephen Weber as Jack is just too slight an actor to pull off the role, he's no Jack Nicholson. I kept thinking of that stupid comedy he was in about pilots on Nantucket or Martha's Vinyard, whatever. His descent into madness is indicated more by the amount of gorey makeup than character development. He doesn't have the gravitas, the presence when compared to Jack Nicholson. To be fair though he has a good scene near the end of the movie when he temporarily throws off the influence of the Overlook, but its too little too late. The worst however is the insufferable brat who plays Danny. He's so scrumdidlyumpciously cute, lisping his lines in a baby voice that to me was like nails on a blackboard. I just wanted Jack to smash his brains out with the crocket mallet and end the torture of having to listen to him whine, and he's supposed to be the sympathetic character? Few actors have made my skin crawl like this kid.

I did like the fact that the movie remains faithful to the book, but by slavishly following the book the flaws in King's narrative devices are brought into glaring relief. Some things work better on paper than translated to the screen. Kubrick, by elliminating the more supernatural happenings made a much creepier and scary movie whose tension slowly grows to a huge climax. The original movie concentrated more on the psychological tension within the characters thus making Jack's descent into madness that much scarier. King's version is much more of a typical haunted house tale that looks and feels cheesy. The ghostly inhabitants of the Overlook hotel look like rejects from a second rate zombie movie with their white pancake makeup and the effects aren't very special. The topiary animals are especially poor. The atmosphere and sense of isolation and ever mounting tension that made Stanley Kubrick's Shining a masterpiece of horror are largely absent in the miniseries. The pacing drags and it's just not very scary. Which as it's supposed to be a horror film, is a huge detriment. Overall the movie isn't horrible, it's worth one viewing, hence my title. But I much prefer Kubrick's bleak and very personal vision than Kings. I'm afraid that King should stick to writing and let masters like Kubrick make the movies even if they're unfaithful to the original material. So rent this movie if you're curious because I'm in doubt you'd want to see it more than once. I know I don't.

4 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE!!!.......2007-03-20

I love the 1980's version and I know for some of you it's hard BUT it's so off the track of what Stephen King wrote. I had a lot of questions about the 1980's movie like, What was the lady in the tub all about? When Wendy is going upstairs when she looks in the one room what was the man and the man dressed up in a dog suit all about? Who were they? What were they doing? Even when I LOVE Jack Nicholson as Jack in the 80's movie and NO ONE else could've played that roll at that time, I agree with King Jack Nicholson is just scare and looks insane even when he is normal. It would've have been better to have someone play the roll that looked like a normal, sane person at the beginning and watch him turn into a mad insane killing machine!! I hate reading i can't stay focoused so this version is the closest thing i can get to besides reading the book. Yes, the new verison is long, Yes, I HATE THE ENDING TO THE BOOK AND MOVIE, it's too happy BUT.... it did help me answer a lot of questions i had about the 80's version! I love Ray Noble, he sings the song "Midnight the stars and you" that is the song playing in the ballroom and at the ending of the movie panning into the black and white picture of the july 4th ball 1921. Over all I like each of them for what they are!!! I love the shining and both versions are great in my opinion!!!The only reason i gave this one 4 instead of 5 stars was because of the ending! Check them both out!!!

5 out of 5 stars STEPHEN KING AT HIS BEST.......2007-03-16

This film stays so much closer to the book than the earlier movie by Stanley Kubrick. Thanks to more modern tech, we have dissed that lame hedge maze and reinstated the chillingly lovely moving, creeping topiary hedges!!!

Also . . . big improvement by casting Steven Weber as Jack Torrance. Jack Nicholson is a great actor -- no argument there -- but let's face it. He looks like a psycho from the git-go. It is a treat to watch the hotel SLOWLY take over the mind and soul of Weber's "Jack" . . . just the way it happened in the book!

Kudos to Mr. King and the folks at ABC who let him pick up the ball and run with it.

A prime candidate for cult status (it even spawned a sequel), this apocalyptic 1995 horror flick belongs in the darker corners of the comedy-horror sub-genre that includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mimic, and Phantoms--and like those movies it's a mixed blessing with some highlights worth savoring.

This one's got Christopher Walken in its favor, starring as the Angel Gabriel, who's really mad at God for allowing humans into heaven (because, you see, humans have souls and angels don't, and God plays favorites). Gabriel takes his anger out on the human race, coming to Earth to capture the soul of the most evil human alive in an effort to defeat the "good" angels that remain in God's good graces. One of the good angels is played by Eric Stoltz, who captures the evil soul before Walken does and transfers it into the body of a little girl. Are you with us so far? Don't worry if you're not, because writer-director Gregory Widen filled The Prophecy with so many wild ideas that he didn't bother to connect them to a coherent plot.

Add Viggo Mortensen as the devil and Elias Koteas as a priest-turned detective who's tracking Walken and it's clear that Widen was attempting something ambitious here. He nearly succeeded, since The Prophecy jumpstarts its heaven-and-hell rivalry with enough action, humor, and intelligence to make the movie sufficiently entertaining. It was enjoyable enough to entice Walken back for the sequel, so if you're into this kind of thing, this one's a keeper. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars It's a Theological War Film.......2007-06-10

Horror? Bah, I say. It asks the question "Why does God love us the most, and why doesn't he love the angels as much?" Of course, you don't really get an answer, because who can really know the mind of God? Christopher Walken is fabulous (this actually might be his iconic role, once we look back on everything). Well worth the time and the thought. Highest rating.

5 out of 5 stars Check Your Haloes At The Door..........2007-05-24

Christopher Walken (The Dead Zone, Sleepy Hollow, Pulp Fiction) is the angel Gabriel, here on earth in mortal form, in order to find and acquire the darkest soul to ever live. Walken is his usual mixture of good / evil / funny / scary. He plays Gabe like a cool hitman w/ angelic abilities. Virginia Madsen (Candyman) is believable in her schoolteacher role, as is Elias Koteas as the ex-priest turned cop, Tom Dagget. We even get Eric Stoltz (Pulp Fiction, The Fly 2) as the angel Simon, and Adam Goldberg (Saving Private Ryan) as Gabriel's human slave! Even Amanda Plummer (another Pulp Fiction alum) pops up as a servant for Gabriel's use! If that's not enough, we even have Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn himself) as satan! All of these folks combine to make THE PROPHECY a classic! The little girl, Mary (Moriah Silver Dove Snyder) is convincingly innocent, and NOT a whiny brat or a trash-talking smarta$$, breaking w/ the usual hollywood idea of childhood as a time for being utterly annoying! How refreshing! Spiritual themes like God, heaven, hell, angels, immortality, souls, etc. are treated w/ respect and dignity, while keeping things exciting, frightening, and mysterious. I don't think I've seen a movie do that since THE EXORCIST and THE OMEN back in the 70s! Highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars witty, intriguing.......2007-01-19

Christopher Walkin was made to play Gabriel. He has some great dialogue to work with. The plot is riveting. Viggo was amazing as Satan.

3 out of 5 stars Great movie, transfer not so good.......2006-11-26

I won't go into the movie's worth as entertainment here - suffice to say that I think it's awesome and well worth 5 stars. But in this review I'm focusing on the technical aspects which I feel detract from the DVD.

This DVD (ASIN: 6305268819) features a transfer that is known as 'matted widescreen' which works fine on smaller 4:3 TVs, but which looks awful on larger screen or widescreen TVs. I believe that every DVD today should be made in 'anamorphic widescreen' format so that the image is enhanced for viewing on a larger screen. If it's not then I think that the low image quality should be clearly marked in some way, as the lack of an anamorphic transfer makes a big difference in quality. In the case of this particular movie the image is very poor mostly due to the matted widescreen format that results in what's known as 'gutterboxing' (black bars all around the image) when the movie is played on widescreen TVs. Some TVs allow zooming in to fill the screen in cases like this, but then the image becomes very grainy - so much so that it's probably better to watch it in the 'gutterboxed' mode.

So in conclusion, those with the older standard 4:3 TVs under 30 inches probably won't notice any loss of resolution. But for folks like me with big screen TVs I advise waiting until this movie gets an updated DVD treatment. Alternatively, if you own a DVD player that can play region 2 discs, the British version (ASIN: B000069JE7 available from Amazon.co.uk) is an anamorphic transfer.

4 out of 5 stars Gabriel played by Walken is priceless, Viggo Mortensen as the Devil, wow.......2006-11-11

The movie in itself is lacking or rather the story is cheesy. So setting that aside it is, however creative and amusing, a must own. Its about the never ending war between heaven and hell, angles have come down both fallen and still in service to God to walk the earth hunting down a recently dead evil soul that Lucifer wants for his side. One angle found it and hid it inside a small girl. An ex priest to be now detective is following this case because of a past connection and chasing down the clues only to be slowed down by Gabriel who wants to start his own war. In turn a deal with the Devil was made.
Its a fun movie, I enjoy watching it over and over again.

With the 1957 release of Paths of Glory, Stanley Kubrick confirmed his early promise and joined the ranks of world-class filmmakers. The age of the auteur had arrived, and Kubrick was a prime candidate for inclusion in the pantheon of directors later canonized by critic Andrew Sarris in his influential book The American Cinema. Ironically, this was also the period during which Kubrick left his native soil for permanent residence in England, and from that point forward, the Kubrick mystique inflated to legendary proportions. But if Kubrick was no longer bringing himself to the world, he was certainly bringing the world to his films. From the comfort of his rural England estate and locations never far from London, Kubrick would command cinematic odysseys to isolated Colorado (in The Shining), battle-ravaged Vietnam (Full Metal Jacket), upscale New York City (Eyes Wide Shut), and, of course, Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite (in 2001: A Space Odyssey).

The New Stanley Kubrick Collection includes all eight of Kubrick's films from Lolita on--a quarter-century of brilliant, challenging cinema. This second edition adds Eyes Wide Shut to the previous collection and remastered sound on five of the films plus a new anamorphic edition of 2001. Purists have complained that Kubrick's last three films have been released in full-screen format only; this was in compliance with Kubrick's wishes, and the films do not suffer unduly from full-screen formatting. This set also features a new full-length documentary made by longtime Kubrick assistant Jan Harlan, Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures. The diversity of Kubrick's work is truly astonishing, even though the director's technical precision and steely perspective on humanity may strike uninitiated viewers as cold and even misanthropic. His films almost always received mixed (and sometimes scathingly negative) reviews upon their release, only to benefit from glowing reassessment as they grew entrenched in the public consciousness. Here, in all their glory, are the collected films of a genuine master, ripe for study and appreciation for many years to come. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great Documentary.......2006-03-18

The documentary about Stanley Kubrick included in this collection ("Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures") makes it worth having. A truly great collection of movies, perfect for a Kubrick enthusiast looking to establish their DVD collection, or for people unsure about Kubrick to make them fans!

5 out of 5 stars A box set featuring the films of the world's greatest director.......2005-07-03

The Stanley Kubrick Collection features 9 amazing DVD's, eight of them films. The films include Lolita, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, the documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures and more.
First of all, the sound/picture quality is amazing. If improves vastly over the sound/picture quality over the original, now out-of-print Stanley Kubrick Collection from 1999.
Also, the films are brilliant, except the vastly overrated A Clockwork Orange. For my review on this film, visit A Clockwork Orange on amazon.com
Every Kubrick fan should own this item!

5 out of 5 stars The master of his domain.......2005-07-03

"Genius is the fire that lights itself." That could very well describe the mystique of, and the body of work from, Stanley Kubrick, arguably one of the greatest filmakers of the 20th century. This collection represents 8 of his works, from 'Lolita' to 'Eyes wide Shut', released after his sudden death in March 1999. Although other directors have a larger number of films to their credit, it only took 13 directions to go in for Kubrick to cement his legacy in the annals of movie history. From my perspective, two flicks stand out to define his greatness: 'Spartacus' (not included in this collection) and '2001: a Space Odyssey'. To do something no one else has done before, and for everyone to pull from that influence since, is a testament to his courage and perfectionism. He is listed in the Guiness book Of World Records as the director who demanded an astonishing 600-plus takes for one scene in 'The Shining'. Needless to say, Shelley Duvall was not happy after that week of shooting in the cold. But the actors who were fortunate enough to work on one of his films became major stars because of their apearances, from James Earl Jones in 'Dr. Strangelove', to Malcolm McDowell in 'A Clockwork Orange', to R. Lee Ermey and Vincent D'Onofrio in 'Full Metal Jacket', and Lelee Sobieski in 'Eyes Wide Shut'. Kirk Douglas was so fond of his talent, he made sure he got to work with him three times.

This is an excellent overview of a master artisan. Purchasing this along with the Criterion Collection version of 'Spartacus' will give you viewing enjoyment that will last a lifetime. Also check out 'A.I.: Artifical Intelligence', a Steven Spielberg product that was based on a screenplay given to him by Kubrick from ideas written in the books by Isaac Asimov. It was the last script Kubrick never finished making a movie of.

5 out of 5 stars Much better set.......2005-05-30

Includes a couple more films and Vivian's feature-length documentary Stanley Kubrick: A Life In Pictures. One look at this set may be as a cash generator (after all, WB already released a Kubrick collection), but second look is Kubrick's artifact, an in-depth, beautifully remastered, feature-packed set. At last, gone are the days of Kubrick rolling in his grave from the original clunker set. He can now rest in peace, as his films are now preserved at highest imaginable quality with immersive 5.1 surround. Bless you, Vivian.

2001 was the only film in the original set to get the 5.1 treatment. Now, four other films (Barry Lyndon, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket) have been touched by the magic wand, and given a massive makeover, including-- you guessed it-- 5.1 surround. The features on the separate discs are essentially the same as the original set (we still get Vivian's Making of The Shining documentary, only with a restoration job done), but the real highlight is A Life In Pictures. After only seeing three of his films (2001, A Clockwork Orange, and Shining), I must agree that Kubrick is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, director(s) that ever lived.

Now WB has listened to the wailing Kubrick estate, and given his films the respect they deserve. Avoid the original clunker. Buy this one.

P.S. The films that are in fullscreen were shot that way, and the original aspect ratio is preserved according to Kubrick's wishes. So stop complaining about it!

5 out of 5 stars Warner Brothers Cleans Up Its Act - Literally........2005-03-29

If you're reading this, chances are you've already seen many (if not all) of these movies and understand their significance in modern cinema. So, a review of the films themselves is fairly pointless. What I will discuss are the technical aspects of these DVDs as well as the bonus documentary "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures." Like many of you, I bought some of the original Stanley Kubrick DVDs, and I can testify that they were shameful presentations of the director's work. "The Shining" had scratches, lines, and dirt all over the film. "A Clockwork Orange" looked woefully drab and washed out. But the worst offense was "Barry Lyndon." Not only did this picture suffer from print flaws, but the image, at one point, WOBBLED. Warner Brothers knew they had a turkey on their hands, so they discontinued these films and re-released them with digitally remastered picture and 5.1 sound. The improvements are noticeable, to say the least. The opening credits of "The Shining," which feature the steadicam roaming through the beautiful vistas of Colorado, is wonderfully crisp and clear. "Barry Lyndon," a visually stunning picture to begin with, is even more breathtaking with its sharp, rich colors. And "Full Metal Jacket," looks much better without the grain. Also, in place of the mono soundtrack that Kubrick allegedly preferred, we get remixed 5.1 audio ("Lolita" and "Dr. Strangelove," however, are still in mono). Simply put, Warners literally cleaned up its act by re-doing these films and presenting them the way they were meant to be shown. The fun doesn't stop there. Unlike the original Kubrick box set, this edition has a bonus documentary narrated by Tom Cruise: "Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures." This hugely entertaining film covers Kubrick's entire filmography, featuring interviews with crew members, friends, and cast including Malcolm McDowell, Jack Nicholson, Matthew Modine, Shelley Duvall, Nicole Kidman, Sidney Pollack, and Cruise himself. Woody Allen, Martin Scorcese, and Steven Speilberg also get to throw in their $.02. While they do praise Kubrick to high heaven, some predictably admit that he was very challenging to work with (he allegedly forced many of his actors to do dozens of takes while filming). Granted, this documentary doesn't exactly get us any closer to the director himself, but it does provide a fairly intimate and thorough look at his work. I've witnessed the price on this box set go down over the last couple years, so if you've been wanting to get your hands on it (and many movie buffs do), now is the time to do so.

--Tom Keogh

Description

THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE brings the lovable family of the 1970's into the modern world, to see how their good old-fashioned values pan out in the streets of Los Angeles. The Brady's house still sparkles with the same orange and olive green furniture as the original show, but the surrounding area has changed drastically. Confronted by carjackers, new fashion trends and popular culture in general, the Brady's remain perky and pleasant to the world around them. When their next-door neighbors try to buy the Brady's home in an attempt to raze the neighborhood and develop a mini-mall, the Brady family must unite and find a solution.

3 out of 5 stars Porkchops, Apple Sauce, and Teeter Totters.......2007-06-09

When this film was released in 1995 my local paper ran a Brady quiz. Much to my horror I answered more than 90 percent of the questions right and was considered an expert. I grew up with 7 sisters and Fridays nights at 8:00 were reserved for "The Brady Bunch". Despite my resistance the Brady Bunch seeped into my subconsious. As for the film, they got the right actors to play the Bradys particularly Gary Cole(absolutely brilliant in "Office Space" and "Ricky Bobby"), Shelley Long, Christine Taylor (eerie resemblance to Maureen McCormick), and Jennifer Elise Cox. The conceit of this film is that that the Bradys are living in the day-glo seventies while the world around them is nineties grunge. My problem is that the makers of the film have kind of a cynical agenda. They want to tap into boomer nostalgia but on the same token show their contempt for it. There's something a little meanspirited about this enterprise despite the best efforts of the actors in the film. They got it right for the sequel though.

I love the brady bunch, and have for a while. so when a movie came out about them, I saw it and thought, "blah." i don't think that they got very good actors at all, and i think that he whole trying to win 20,000 dollars thing was blah. and i just think that they kind of ruined the classic brady bunch series.

4 out of 5 stars Ladies and Gentlmen...Jennifer Elise Cox!.......2007-01-19

Could she have nailed JAN any better? Amazing performance!! As for the rest -- the women are great, the men... so-so. The film is a genuinely funny romp through the Land of Brady... but the stand-out performance by far is by Ms. Cox. Marcia Marcia Marcia!

3 out of 5 stars For The Brady Bunch Fan.......2007-01-04

We enjoyed the movie. If you're not a big fan of the original show, you may not like it. It's a funny movie with crude humor.

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2006-08-04

I'm a not big fan of the T.V show. I like it, but the movie is much better. I also think Christine Taylor plays a better Marcia Brady then Maureen McCormick. I think she had no personality at all.

The movie was very funny, and so was the sequel, however there was no bonus material. I know it wasn't very popular in the 90's, but they could've added something. Maybe the original cast talking; maybe a little bit of information of how they made the movie. I know I always like to watch Deleted Scenes and the Gag Real. But there was nothing. The movie is so funny though that I didn't notice it until after I watched the movie twice.

I love the casting. Shelley Long and Gary Cole make a perfect Carol & Mike Brady. Christine Taylor, like I already said, is a better Marcia Brady. Peter annoys me, though. I love how some of original Brady cast was in it. Too bad the real Mike couldn't see how funny the movie was.

Also, I believe there is an error of Florence Henderson playing Grandma. Grandma is on Carol's side, right? Not Mike's? Well, Carol wasn't 'born' Brady, so Grandma shouldn't be a Brady. Well, in the casting, she labeled Grandma Brady. I find that an error, as, her name should be just Grandma.

Overall, The Brady Bunch movie is great. If you haven't seen the sequel, see it. They're both such great movies.

4 out of 5 stars Christmas Classic in the Making.......2007-02-20

This comedy is as gentle as a cloud, but has much more substance; mistaken identity, quirky characters, a bit of mayhem, and cute kids. This is a movie that can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. It was great to see Native Americans portrayed in such positive and clever ways. Keep an eye out for the runaway mouse. He and the vegan chef provide some of the biggest laughts in this delightful comedy.

A fun, feel-good movie, great for watching during the Christmas season.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful feel-good Christmas diversion!.......2007-01-16

Beautiful scenery (Robert Redford's Utah property) and a charming group of Native American actors make this a "different" Christmas story for the whole family.

Finally, a movie that isn't too much of anything--except for just completely enjoyable! What this movie isn't:

Not too serious
Not too funny
Not too sexual
Not too hard to follow
Not too many special effects
Not too long
No hidden messages
No politcal agenda

...you get the idea. If you want to sit back and watch a harmless holiday movie (not really what I would call a Christmas Classic, the holiday was more of a back drop and wasn't leaned on in any way for the story), and just be entertained without all the hub-bub then this is your movie! The charaters are so easy to understand and follow and care about and the story moves along at a perfectly steady pace. I never broke my spleen laughing but was happily amused throught the picture, which to me is a much greater feat for a movie!!! Not sure what to compare this too, it really has an original feel to it and is definitely what I would call a hidden gem as far as movies go...it was SOOOOO nice to have watched a movie and been given that warm fuzzy afterwards. Thank you to the everyone that had anything to do with the production of this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas in the Clouds.......2007-01-10

This is a special comedy romance story. You have to see it more than once to get all the humor that is in it. This movie deserves better recognition than it has gotten.

I highly recommend everyone watching this special video.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-06-10

This movie is the final chapter in the Prophecy trilogy. If you liked the other two, this is a must have. If you have not seen any of the other films, get them first. Or you will have no idea what is going on. These films make one of the best trilogies ever.

4 out of 5 stars Gabriel Is A Homless Pan Handler !!!.......2007-03-15

Christopher Walken is brilliant again in this third installment of the Prophecy series!! Watch and listen to him closely and you will enjoy these three films greatly!!! He is the glue that holds the films together and he out shines all other actors in this trilogy!!! ENJOY HIM !!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Ascent.......2007-01-28

I enjoyed it very much. When 3 came out, I wasn't exactly sure how it was going to work out, considering how it ended with the 2nd movie. I was highly amused with the diner scene, which was a connection with the 1st movie.

2 out of 5 stars ATHLETIC ANGELS.......2006-04-09

This third entry in the PROPHECY series is the weakest of the lot. I've seen all of them except the second one, but this one is incoherent and muddled and Dave Buggatto's performance as Danyael is really bad. It's hard to tell the good angels from the bad angels, and even Christopher Walken seems bored with it all, as he must have been since he didn't show up for four and five. Obviously trying to lure in THE MATRIX audience, the movie features too many acrobatic battles and chases, and the ending is a real copout. Brad Dourif has a cameo as what else? a looney zealot. Fortunately the next two are more entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars The Ascent DVD.......2006-03-21

Third installment of the character. Not as good as the first, but still enjoyable.

One of the hugest soul-funk groups of the last half of the 1970s, Earth Wind & Fire created a lush, trademark sound that reveals its infectious nature in this documentary look at the group's 30-year history. Founded by Maurice White in the early 1970s, EWF broke out in mid-decade with its That's the Way of the World album. The documentary offers footage and reminiscences from the band, about its origins (White had been a Chicago session musician), its breakthrough and subsequent run as America's biggest soul band--and White's eventual burnout that led to putting the band on hiatus through much of the 1980s. It all has the homogenized sound of an authorized biography (no Behind the Music revelations here), but it gains energy every time a vintage musical performance takes center stage. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best You Will Find on EW&F.......2007-05-14

Maurice White's genius comes through on this DVD. The most comprehensive look at the beginnings of Whites dream - which of course turned into the incomparable Earth Wind & Fire. From his beginnings with the Ramsey Lewis trio through forming what is probably the greatest R&B group of all time bar none. The cast White put together to form the band brought together some of the greatest vocalists and musicians, re: Philip Bailey, Al McKay, Verdine White etc ever assembled in one band - the story is amazing an interesting. If you are a Earth Wind and Fire fan - the story along with old footage of performances is a bout as comprehensive as you are going to get.

5 out of 5 stars The Best band in the world........2007-01-11

This is a wonderful look into the group's history and Maurice White's vision. It felt like it should have been longer. The old concert footage was great! Man, they used to tear it up on stage. No real discussion was done about the period during the band's breakup after Electric Universe, the solo ventures and the comeback record 'Touch The World' was not even mentioned, even in the album review section of the DVD. Nor was the '90s releases discussed. But still in all this is a wonderful story of a positive spiritual Afro-centric band that broke all barriers in the '70s. No band ever came close, except for Parliament/Funkadelic or maybe Pink Floyd, and no other band has touched the realm of professionalism and discipline since. Maurice & EWF have secured a beautiful legacy for all bands to pattern themselves after. It is interesting that they really don't recieve the recognition they should outside of their fan base. This music will live forever.

4 out of 5 stars A Satisfying Look Inside A Musical Dynasty!!.......2005-11-16

The thing that I like about this DVD is that it's
straight from the people who made the legend come to life!
Maurice, Verdine, Phillip, Larry, Al, Johnny,
Fred, Ralph, Andrew and the surviving members of
the Phoenix Horns all have their say and cover
their miraculous career / journey in somewhat
intimate detail. There are home movies of the band on tour
during their hey-day, backstage footage, etc.
as well as some well-placed snipets of the music itself.
E,W & F, to me, will always be the baddest band of all time!
Those classic albums from 1973's "Head To The Sky" to 1981's
"Raise" are etched into my DNA and still provide joy
and inspiration! A worthwhile addition to your DVD collection
if your are into documentaries of the great artists who shaped
their times and future times to come!

5 out of 5 stars A Success Story.......2005-08-09

Lots of great background info on one of my favorite groups. I though the first 10 minutes or so dragged, however, it picked up speed and became very intriguing soon after that. Lots of great clips - I learned stuff I never knew before about the group. worth ordering.

5 out of 5 stars Very indepth and Entertaining.......2005-08-01

I bought this DVD when it was first released and I must tell you that it is very indept and entertaining. It even has footage of Maurice playing drums with Ramsey Lewis. And very early shots of the original bands first performance. A must have for any EWF fan.
