House of Wax brought Vincent Price into the horror genre, where he fit as snugly as a scalpel in a mad scientist's hand. A remake of the 1933 film Mystery of the Wax Museum, this entertaining Gothic shocker casts Price as a sculptor of wax figures; his unwilling victims--er, "models"--lend their bodies to his lifelike depictions of Marie Antoinette and Joan of Arc. The film was one of the top 10 moneymakers of its year, thanks in part to the 3-D gimmick, which explains why so many things are aimed at the camera (why else would the paddleball man be there?). Footnote to history: director Andre De Toth was blind in one eye, and thus could not see in three dimensions.

Not at all a musty relic of the early-sound era, the original Mystery of the Wax Museum (shot in a soft, trial version of Technicolor) is saucy, pre-Code fun. As corpses disappear from the morgue, Lionel Atwill's wax museum adds to its displays. Coincidence, or the work of the hideously deformed fiend stalking the Manhattan night? Most of the snappy dialogue comes courtesy of reporter Glenda Farrell, a vintage wisecracking dame. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars PLEASE RELEASE THIS IN ANAGLYPH!.......2007-05-28

This movie was originally shot in 3D, and is one of the classic 3D movies with pretty good 3D when presented well-- I have an old VHS recording of House of Wax transmitted in anaglyph over broadcast TV from a decade or two ago, and it still looks pretty hot with red-blue glasses.

However, 3D with shutter glasses is now essentially useless. Most new TVs that people will buy will be LCD and most DVD players progressive scan, which just don't work with 3D. On the other hand, anaglyph should still work on LCD and computer screens. Since this is a black and white movie anyway, anaglyph isn't a bad choice for this movie (the only release I know of currently is "The Bubble" which isn't nearly as good as House of Wax). We need some good anaglyph 3D movies released on DVD, and this is a prime candidate. At any rate, this movie is well worth viewing in 3D anaglyph, and I'll keep watching my old VHS copy while waiting for it to be released in DVD anaglyph 3D.

At first I thought this was the new one and almost gave a bad review.
The new version is not worth watching.
Buy this one in 3D if you can still find it.
It is worth wearing the glasses.

5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-01-11

A fantastic movie! One of the best Vincent Price movies, imo. Highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2006-12-01

This is such a fun, kinda spooky lil movie! I can't believe some crappy b-movie "remake" (yeah, RIGHT!!!) was made recently!! Vincent Price is awesome here! I LOVE Sue's unfortunate buddy, Cathy - "You got all the brains, and all I got is [giggles] what I got!"!! The moment when she "uncovers" the truth about Joan of Arc is chilling, along with its repercussions.

The bonus film, 1933's "Mystery of the Wax Museum", is quite good! I love that it is 20 years older than "House of Wax", yet it is set in then-present-day 1933, whereas "House of Wax" is set at the turn of the 20th century. I find the older film a bit spookier! Both are highly enjoyable, and I recommend you watch 'em :)

This movie is a bit boring, typical late teen movie, no money have to save the building before the bank claims it back. The brunette is the only girl worth watching.
Not recommened.

4 out of 5 stars about the movie legacy of lust.............2005-01-31

This title is also one of the better titles of Art series films/movies for Home video which might interest some whom are potential buyers on their mindset. The story is bascially about wax figurine in their sexual posisition comes alive after an amulet of sex is put at their neck (not going to elaborate any further to make it more attractive to people whom wish to know the story). Sexual content, in this film/movie, which are numerous are strongly put across the screen rather than a more story based. What makes this title goes unrated at this point of discussion is the lesbian sex between the two alive wax figurine and four lesbian sex which follows next. (I meant with the lesbian scenes missing would be just a normal R rated). There are some other movies that comes in this form with story based which includes sexual intrigue(2000), illicit confessions(1998), play time(1994), forbidden (2001), claire dolan (1998), Fast lane in Vegas/Fast lane in Malibu, Jan Dara, Untold Scandal, Romance and Passion, Crash (1996), Close your eyes and hold me (2001), the lover and some other EROS titles. These erotic films/movies that I have reviewed so far is a "blessing" during the long wait for time which is more or less about to come true to the dreams....so far so good. I hope the recommendation is useful for those whom are interested ion these titles of movies/films. Enjoy....:-)

4 out of 5 stars Good, early, Surrender softcore........2004-04-29

Exotic House of Wax is one of Surrender's earlier titles and was made around the same time as Femalien, Virtual Encounters 1, and Virtual Encounters 2 (there's even a small relationship between EHOW's story and the one in Femalien). It isn't in the same league as those titles, but it's still good.

There are 6 sex scenes. 3 are boy/girl. 2 are boy/girl/girl. 1 is girl/girl/girl/girl. There's also a short shower scene with Blake Pickett. The best scene was the lesbian foursome. That's Jacqueline Lovell's only scene, but she was great. Romeo and Juliet's boy/girl scene and Blake Pickett's boy/girl scene were also exceptional. The other three scenes were decent, but nothing memorable. The actors/actresses stayed in their costumes a little too long for my liking and the camera was too close to the action a lot of the time. Also, this being a Surrender title, there was no audio other than the music during the sex scenes. Although 6 scenes doesn't sound like much, Surrender's scenes run longer than your typical softcore title. However, I felt this video did devote a little too much of its running time to the story.

All but two of the women were beautiful and had great bodies. Those other two were not what I would call unattractive, but just didn't compare to the other women.

I'm a big Jacqueline Lovell fan and consider her scene second only to her lesbian scene from Femalien. For that reason alone, I consider this a worthwhile purchase.

I have one gripe. The DVD is authored very poorly. There are no timecodes and no way to jump to specific scenes from the menu. There are chapter stops, so it's not as bad as it could be, but to not include those two features is just lazy.

And finally, I want to make it clear that I am reviewing the most recent DVD release from Shadow. They did get the right version for this one. It is the unrated version, not some chopped up R rated version.

You know the one about the group of horny kids who get offed one by one? Yeah, so do director Jaume Collet-Serra and his screenwriters, who have updated an old Vincent Price flick and sandwiched it between hearty slices of The Blair Witch Project and various Friday the 13th films. Lots of WB and Fox network hotties--including 24's Elisha Cuthbert, One Tree Hill's Chad Michael Murray, and, well, Paris Hilton--have car trouble and stumble onto a town populated by real killer personalities. The R-rated result is fairly gruesome and, though no one ever quite looks frightened enough, Collet-Serra knows his way around a jolting suspense sequence or two. Cuthbert and an unintentionally funny Murray (striking ludicrous poses as some kind of real toughie) act more like angry ex-lovers than the fraternal twins they're supposed to be; Hilton acts bored while her real-life video scandal is exploited for ironic kicks; and the film heads shamelessly over-the-top with each new twist. As an exercise in bloody mayhem, it has a few novel touches, but you can easily find better scares. --Steve Wiecking

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite scary movies!.......2007-06-13

I'll admit that when I first saw this movie in the theatres, I was expecting it to be bad simply because Paris Hilton and Chad Michael Murray were in it. I was extremely surprised that I ended up really liking it!

So what's this movie about? First, let me say that I haven't seen the original. And I only recently found out that this particular movie was a remake and was honestly surprised because remakes tend to be awful and this movie is far from awful. So a group of semi-young adults are on a roadtrip to go to a football game. When they stop in an empty spot in the woods for some sleep, they find out that not only did they wake up late and might miss the game, their car also has stopped working. They come across a creepy guy that takes two of the kids to a small town to find a part for their car. While searching for the car part, they stumble upon a museum, the House of Wax. Something about this museum is weird, but the kids can't put their finger on it. They eventually learn that the museum isn't the only thing weird about this small town.

What's to like about this movie? First, if you like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you'll love this movie. It's almost like it's the same movie only with different settings. Second, the storyline in this movie is actually GOOD. It's hard to find a scary movie that doesn't contain a typical or boring storyline. Third, it's gory, shocking, and mysterious-three components that make a scary movie really good.

And what's not to like? First, Paris Hilton's stripping and sex scene had me groaning in discomfort. I'm pretty sure the creators of this movie added those scenes to make us hate her character and feel absolutely no sympathy for her. Additionally, Chad Michael Murray's character annoyed the heck out of me. You just want him to shut up about his "difficult life" and stop acting like he's better than everyone else. Those are my only gripes.

One more thing I'd like to point out. This movie contains bonus features (like a play by play with the movie's main characters and behind the scenes footage). Although some of it is boring (the play by play), some of it is also interesting (the behind the scenes stuff). For example, in the scenes leading up to Paris' demise, Paris is supposed to scream. A lot. During the behind the scenes footage, Paris asks the people on set to scream with her for a little while to make her feel more comfortable. Also, the wax is actually peanut butter. Pretty cool.

If you're a horror movie fan, you MUST watch this one. Trust me, you'll love it!

4 out of 5 stars Seems more like a remake of "Tourist Trap" than "House of Wax"..........2007-06-03

I saw House of Wax in the theater and after having anticipated its release for several months I found it fairly disappointing. Not the worst movie ever and although it had its high points it was certainly not the best either. I left feeling like it could have been so much more; I also felt that it was not truly a remake of House of Wax as it shares almost nothing with the two original films of the same name except its recognizable title.

In fact, I seem to be the only person who thinks it was actually meant to be a remake of a 1979 horror flick called "Tourist Trap"--a freaky, scary horror movie that gives me the chills so much that I can really only tolerate watching it once every year or two and only in a fully lit room, with at least one other person present! This House of Wax has FAR more in common with Tourist Trap than any previous House of Wax film. I think someone realized what a great and truly creepy movie Tourist Trap is but also understood that it is not one of the more well known horror films and decided to call it House of Wax in order to bank on Vincent Price's name and talents. Watch the either of the two previous House of Wax movies, then watch Tourist Trap (not recommending you watch that one alone!) then watch this House of Wax and make your own decision...

That being said despite my lukewarm feelings for Wax in the theater, which I later chalked up to having had a headache at the time and not being in a very good mood, I did buy it right off the bat once it was released on dvd. I have seen it so many times now that I can't even count. Regardless of its shortcomings it has become one of my favorite horror movies to throw on when I fall asleep or as background noise when I am cleaning. :-)

House of Wax just seems to work better on the small screen than it did in the theater. Good points: casting. Yes, even Ms. Hilton seems to have a place in the film. I found the characters and actors to be quite believable in their roles and thought they had good chemistry and worked well together. Are they all the best actors around? No, but for what the movie is supposed to be I think they fit the bill nicely.

Suspense is another good point in the film. While it does take a bit of time for us to get to any real action (the movie clocks in at approximately 48 minutes before anyone is even attacked and this may be part of the reason a lot of people see it as dull or over-long) once we do arrive it is very suspenseful. Until the tail end of the story the movie avoids some traditional cliches and actually DOES do some stuff that you don't expect. In the theater I was saying to myself "Oh they're not gonna do that, no, they're not REALLY gonna do it" but they did--won't tell you what as I don't want to spoil anything. In the down time that leads up to that 48 minute mark where the movie explodes we do get a lot of very good character development, another point that no one can accuse the movie of falling short on.

The visuals are wonderful! It is pretty amazing the incredible detail and hard work that went into creating this town where the movie takes place, and such work should be acknowledged and appreciated. I enjoyed the behind the scenes look at creating the buildings and props and so on and I feel like it's a shame the movie didn't do as well as it could have in theaters for the reason alone that so many will miss the great set design and work that went into it.

One weak point overall is the music. The score is very good at certain points and totally ineffective or lacking in others. For the most part it is adequate but the songs that are played in the movie are terrible and add nothing to the feel or emotion. A minor complaint! Towards the end of the movie the dialogue becomes run-of-the-mill and we've heard it all before but I did like the dynamics of the surviving characters. The one thing that annoys me to no end with this movie is the very last thing they do in it. Incredibly unnecessary and ridiculous thing to tack on to the end and it nearly ruins some of the story (for me at least). When rating this movie I usually knock off a full star due to that alone.

Overall, with House of Wax you are not going to be in for a mind-blowing experience but you will be in for some great visuals, strong performances, good suspense and a horror movie that is not quite the same as the rest.

Just as a side note...for anyone who is not familiar with the movie Tourist Trap, please seek it out and watch it! Then if you've seen at least one of the two previous House of Wax films as well as TT let me know whether you agree with my comments about the similarities (or please leave comments if you have already seen all of these films). I am highly interested to hear other opinions on the subject! Thanks!

2 out of 5 stars Dull and Not Scary.......2007-05-07

I found myself pausing the movie and walking away quite a bit. Nothing really new here, nor scary for that matter. An hour in and I didn't find myself scared about anything.

I wouldn't recommend watching this.

1 out of 5 stars REALL REALLY BAD.......2007-05-03

THIS MOVIE SUCKS NEED I SAY MORE

3 out of 5 stars Strangely...........2007-05-01

I think the best part in the whole movie was Paris Hilton with a pole through her head... The wax house was very cool, Vincent was really interesting. The acting was...nominal.... but the hack and slash nature of the film probably saved it. Nothing really new except Vincent and the house itself. Maybe it was too bad the cameras didn't get bogged down in the wax more often. At least a gag reel of that would have been worth it.

Thanks!

I expected it to be horrible...and it wasn't. The transfer was good. The acting was ok. It was interesting. The special effects were good. It's not a Vincent Price movie but it was pretty good.

A fairly good horror movie with gritty horror scenes. Paris does a decent job acting but probably will be most noted for looking fantastic by gaining weight. I think this remake is a good buy, I personally have never seen the old House Of Wax so I cannot comment on whether or not this movie was an improvement over the original, but I can tell you it was entertaining and the Blu-Ray looked really nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Blu-Ray Transfer! A Decent Horror Flick!.......2006-09-23

Ok, this plot has been done before, (like so many horror films of today)but it still manages to have some fun and provide some good moments of suspense and fright!
Paris Hilton is not the main star of this, and her scenes are pretty minimal compared to the entire film, (she actually does a decent job considering her limited acting experience.)
This is actually a film you'll enjoy, unless you are very picky about what you choose to watch, and/or are not into horror films.
As to the Blu-Ray transfer, its VERY good. A really nice transfer and scenes are pretty stunning to watch at times, the melting wax at the end is particularly good, but pretty much everything is good in this transfer!

1 out of 5 stars Drippy.......2006-09-09

The primary appeal of this movie seems to be: Paris Hilton dies. Come on, most of the people who went to see it were probably dying (no pun intended) to see it happen. Sadly, Hilton's death is attached to the remake of "House of Wax," a campy screamflick about Madame Tussaud's gone bad. Good Lord.

Six nubile twentysomethings are en route to a basebell game when (surprise surprise) they break down. They stay overnight in a creepy forest, only to have their car sabotaged by a mystery driver -- and just how does a fan belt break in a stopped car? Sabotage. A few hitch a ride into the town, and soon find that the town is even weirder than an episode of "The Simple Life."

The feel is 1960s-ish. The buildings are literally made of wax. Corpses are being dumped in pits in the woods. And there is a creepy museum called the House of Wax, with some very suspicious-looking figures in it. And worst of all, someone seems to be hell-bent on adding our clueless protagonists to the House of Wax.

To be honest, "House of Wax" reminds me of an old "Get Smart" episode I once saw, except that that episode was more fun. In fact, "House of Wax" is so cliched and so bad that it actually comes across as a parody. We have clueless young people, girls in skimpy attire (including Hilton in red lingerie), redneck psychos, blood and body parts, and death by sharp objects. All it needs is a screaming virgin.

Well, at least it doesn't pretend to be clever or innovative. It doesn't even try.

What is good? The wax effects, and the climactic blaze. And it does have some entertainment value as a cliched cheesefest. The script is a bad hybrid of "Halloween," Vincent Price, and one of the worse episodes of "X-Files," and sadly the direction follows in kind. It has a B-movie flavour, despite the more polished filming techniques.

The climax is probably the most worthwhile part of the whole movie, when a fire causes the House of Wax to melt. The special effects are pretty amusing. Seeing people fall through stairs and walls is actually kind of fun, as is the gruesome scene where we see someone getting a wax job. (Rim shot)

The acting here is strictly scream-horror fare, meaning it's bad. Not entertainingly bad, just forgettably bad. Despite the unsurprising disaster of Hilton's performance, she's no better or worse than the other stars here, such as Elisha Cuthbert or Chad Michael Murray. All of them are playing one-note idiots -- acting doesn't enter into it, and the best moments are right before people die.

The most entertainment "House of Wax" can bring you is a drinking time, where you take a swig every time a horror cliche comes up, or a character does something moronic. You'll be passed out before Hilton dies.

1 out of 5 stars Dark and dismal.......2006-11-12

t would be hard to find a collection of horror movies that is as completely worthless as the "Dark Castle Horror Collection." Every movie here is an atrocious compost heap of "boo" scares and verbal drivel, until the best thing you can do is switch on some Vincent Price movies. The best thing here is an impaled Paris Hilton.

Six nubile twentysomethings are en route to a basebell game when (surprise surprise) they break down. To make matters worse, their car is sabotaged by a mysterious figure in the woods. So a few manage to get into town... only to find that some sort of dementoid is running the "House of Wax," and they are going to be the next attraction.

"Gothika" is one of those blots on Halle Berry's resume: She plays a criminal psychologist at a women's prison, and to make things a bit more convenient, she's married to her boss. But her world takes a horrifying turn when she has a car accident, and wakes to find herself an inmate at the prison -- accused of murdering her hubby. And she's seeing ghosts to boot.

"Ghost Ship" makes trouble for a salvage crew, when they find an Italian ocean liner that has been wandering the seas since the 1960s. Something horrifying (and very bloody) happened there when the liner vanished, and when the salvage crew claims the boat, they are slowly picked off by supernatural forces. From the liner, of course.

"Thirteen Ghosts" haunt Cyrus Kriticos's house, which has been left to his grieving nephew Arthur (Tony Shalhoub) and his family. Of course, they decide to head inside -- only to discover that the tormented souls are very real. And worse, they're trapped in a house that is a "machine" to open the very gates of hell. Saw that coming.

"House on Haunted Hill" cinematically rapes the original cult classic. An oddball millionaire (Geoffrey Rush) invites several people to an old lunatic asylum, which is said to be haunted -- if they make it through the night, they will each receive a million dollars. But then the ghosts of the asylum start rising and killing the people there -- assuming that they don't kill each other first.

Horror movies are struggling at the moment, since moviemakers don't have the slightest idea how to creep people out. And so we end up with dreck like these miserable gorefests -- pile on the blood, guts and cheesy cliches, and hope that people actually care enough to watch to the end. It's hard to imagine that anyone would.

"Gothika" ends up being one of the few with an actual plot, albeit a ridiculous one. The other movies are just variations of the typical "locked in a haunted house" storyline, with the requisite mutilated bodies and CGI ghosts. None of them have much atmosphere at all, and the goofy-looking ghosts may inspire laughter instead of fear.

There are a few decent actors in these messes, such as Berry, Robert Downey Jr., and the ever-lovable Shalhoub. Unfortunately, most of the actors are forgettable and bland, and are only called on to shriek out incredibly silly lines ("The house doesn't care what's fair, who lives or dies. Know why? Cause it's a f**king HOUSE!"). "House of Wax" also has the dubious honor of having socialite Paris Hilton in it, though admittedly her death scene is kind of fun.

Poorly-written, badly-acted, and aimed straight down to the bottom, the "Dark Castle Horror Collection" is a perfect example of what NOT to watch on a spooky, stormy night.

"The Erotic House of Wax" is for the most your typical 'B' movie fare: College girl inherits financially decrepit house of wax from her weird grandfather. Girl and her friends, with unexpected help of a mute mystical woman with magical amulets possessing powers of lust brings 'erotic' wax figures to life. Well, you can probably figure out the rest. All said, "The Erotic House of Wax" is the only movie in this set worth having. The other three leave much to be desired - In fact, I wound up fast-forwarding through them!

This movie was stupidly funny. The one part that grosed me out was when that guy cut off that one chicks finger with the wire snips. The funniest part was when Paris Hilton had that big stake go through her head. Do not rent this if you want to be scared. Ha
