A jewel of a sleeper, The Man in the Moon comes off as a nearly perfect short story of two sisters' first competition in the field of love. In a 1950's small Louisiana farm town, 14-year-old Dani falls for Court, a 17-year-old engaging neighbor boy. The two become great friends, but Court is more interested in Dani's 17-year-old sister, Maureen, who is blossoming. Dani will look for any justification why she should be with Court, but as human law dictates, there is no cure for a 14-year-old with a crush.

The film is another winning portrayal of small-town adolescence from Robert Mulligan (To Kill A Mockingbird). His eye for casting is impeccable, with Sam Waterston and Tess Harper as the earnest parents and newcomer Jason London as the dreamy Court. The real find, though, is Reese Witherspoon as Dani. Her timeless work here is magical. The PG-13 rating is a bit heavy-handed--although the film does not shy away from its look at budding sensuality, or a horrific and emotional accident. Mature 10-year-olds may find one of their favorite films here. --Doug Thomas

Description

Oscar(r) nominees* Sam Waterston and Tess Harper and veteran actress Gail Strickland (Norma Rae) join three talented newcomers in this deeply moving film (Los Angeles Times) about coming of age and sexual discovery in rural, 1950s Louisiana. Brilliantly directed by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Summer of 42), The Man in the Moon is a poignant and bittersweet tale Roger Ebert calls a wonderful movie...a victory...a meticulously prepared masterpiece. Fourteen-year-old Dani (Reese Witherspoon) and her older sister Maureen (Emily Warfield) have always shared everything. But when Court Foster (Jason London) moves in next door, the sisters become rivals as Dani experiences her first feelings of affection and Maureen finds the true love she's longed for. But with love comes heartache, and the sisters soon learn a tough life lesson when tragedy strikes and the strength of their bond is the only thing that will keep theirhearts from breaking. *1984: Actor, The Killing Fields; 1986: Supporting Actress, Crimes of the Heart

This movie was a joy to watch. NO nudity, NO bad language, just a simple story line about a family, a real family, and how they handle life. I have seen this movie more than once and will probably see it again.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Movie.......2007-03-16

Absolutely excellent movie about a teenage kid (Reese W) who falls in love with a boy 3 years older who in turn falls for Reese's older sister, the acting is superb and Reese shows us in her debut movie what we have seen for many years now - that she is a great actress. this is a film for all ages that everyone can identify with - the teenage crush and subsequent heartbreak when things go wrong. the screenplay is exceptional and director Mulligan keeps the film interesting at all times.

5 out of 5 stars A coming of age.......2007-01-11

5 out of 5 stars Great comedy!.......2007-04-18

Hispanic-American Rudy (Cheech Marin) is just having a fine day until an immigration raid as he's wrongfully prosecuted as an illegal immigrant. He doesn't know a word of spanish and forgot to bring his wallet and ID, he's forced to be deported to Mexico as he must find a way to get back to the U.S. even if he has to work for a club owner (Daniel Stern) for money.

Entertaining, underrated and hilarious cult comedy written and directed by Cheech Marin in based on his comedy parody album of the same name. Co-starring Paul Rodriguez, this lighthearted comedy has good laughs and an original storyline from Marin fresh off his Cheech and Chong stuff, this is one of the best and funniest comedy movies i've ever seen for i highly recommend it.

The DVD here has good picture and sound with both fullscreen and widescreen versions and one extra which is the theatrical trailer.

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-03-29

I personally love this movie, first time i saw it, a long time ago, i didnt like it because I was a Kid,,, then i saw it a few years later and love it,,, now i went to amazon and looked for it,,, its now on my collections... Its not a huge Classic movie, but it makes you have a good tome.

2 out of 5 stars Born in East L.A........2007-01-06

I have been waiting for some time to buy this movie because it was one of my all-time favorites when I first saw it on television. Waiting to see if it would appear at a discount price (about $5-$7)I decided to go ahead and purchase it. I was disappointed to find out that this version had the shorten-version that did not show the marriage on the float at the end of the movie. Only then did I learn this movie had two different endings. Regardless, since it was one of my favorites, I decided to keep it anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Good, politically incorrect ethnic humor!.......2006-11-11

What made this film funny is that Cheech Marin's character Rudy Ramos tried to behave as the straight guy while acting out just about every bad Mexican joke that's ever been told. In this respect, it's one gaffe right after another.

BTW I also got a big kick out of Paul Rodriguez as the cousin, Javier, who acted like the picture of Jesus with the phone behind it was talking to him... at one point, he obediently brings "Jesus" a can of beer, LOL!

If only the real situation were not so depressing. I went to Tijuana in December '88 with a buddy who's an American citizen (he's of Mexican descent, but looks Egyptian... so the border guards never gave him any trouble), and came back across at the end of the day wondering why any sane person would want to live there. As bad as Tijuana is, however, I've heard it's nowhere near as bad as Calcutta ( =Tijuana if it was hit by a bomb).

4 out of 5 stars Funny as Hell'o.......2006-08-24

Too funny. Send a copy the mexican border, both sides should see this movie!

Though well short of the classics he would go on to make with Budd Boetticher (Seven Men from Now, The Tall T, et al.), Man in the Saddle is measurably superior to most of Randolph Scott's other '50s Westerns. The script has enough characters, criss-crossed revenge subplots, and tortuous romances for a miniseries; yet somehow, within a B-movie running time, director André De Toth manages to give all of them enough attention so that the movie makes sense, even threatens to get really interesting. He also finds distinctive ways to stage standard set pieces like, say, a saloon shootout. And there's a cumulatively amazing fistfight that starts in a mountain cabin, totally uses up that set, then spills downhill through snowfield and waterfall. Randy's character is a more complicated fellow than usual, and the Scots-Canadian actor Alexander Knox, best known for his Oscar®-nominated turn as Woodrow Wilson, makes a creepily compelling range baron. --Richard T. Jameson

Description

In MAN IN THE SADDLE we see Randolph Scott in an archetypal role as Owen Merritt, a man of few words, unerring aim and unbreakable principles, who swallows his pride when the woman he loves marries for wealth. But when her wildly jealous husband vows to ruin Merritt's ranch, Merritt strikes back. A satisfying combination of action, romance, and breathtaking high-desert scenery, MAN IN THE SADDLE also features Tennessee Ernie Ford in a rare movie appearance.

4 out of 5 stars "Man in the Saddle (1951) ... Randolph Scott ... Columbia Pictures Classic Westerns".......2007-04-08

Columbia Pictures presents "MAN IN THE SADDLE" (1951) (87 mins/Color) (Dolby digitally remastered) --- Starring Randolph Scott, Joan Leslie, Ellen Drew, Alexander Knox & John Russell. --- Directed by André De Toth and released in December 2, 1951, our story line and film, A rancher is forced to stand by as his girl friend is lured away by a wealthy neighboring rancher. When the neighbor is killed, Scott is accused of the murder, and must clear himself. After a blood-spattered fistfight with a gunslinger and several gun battles, Scott consoles himself with schoolteacher Ellen Drew. Based on a novel by Ernest Haycox, Man in the Saddle was the first of the lucrative collaborations between star Randolph Scott and producer Harry Joe Brown --- some of the stand outs of the film: seeing "Tennessee" Ernie Ford without a mustache singing "Man in the Saddle"; Alfonso Bedoya's too brief scenes as a cook; the color photography of the high country, and the fight scene there with John Russell --- Randy Scott's a 'peaceable man' in the tradition of Wild Bill Elliott, but don't provoke him you'll soon see the other side of the coin --- It becomes an open war after Richard Rober kills brothers Camerone Mitchell and Richard Crane who work for Scott, then everything breaks loose.

Under André De Toth (Director), Harry Joe Brown (Producer), Kenneth Gamet (Screenwriter), Ernest Haycox (Book Author), Charles Lawton (Cinematographer), George Duning (Composer (Music Score), Charles Nelson (Editor), George Brooks (Art Director) - - - - the cast includes Randolph Scott (Owen Merritt), Joan Leslie (Laure Bidwell), Ellen Drew (Nan Melotte), Alexander Knox (Will Isham), Richard Rober (Fay Dutcher), John Russell (Hugh Clagg), Guinn "Big Boy" Williams (Bourke Prine), Alfonso Bedoya (Cultus Charley), Clem Bevans (Pay Lankershim), Cameron Mitchell (George Virk), Richard Crane (Juke Virk), Frank Sully (Lee Repp), George Lloyd (Tom Croker), Frank S. Hagney (Ned Bale), Don Beddoe (Love Bidwell), Grant Withers, Tennessee Ernie Ford, James Kirkwood (Sheriff Medary) - - - - Randy Scott had a quiet gentleman nature about him which is not seen in the films of today ... Randy took his job and his responsibility to his audience very seriously ,,, would not settle for anything less than his best ... same was true in his personal life.

4 out of 5 stars All action colorful Randolph Scott western from 1951.......2007-01-04

MAN IN THE SADDLE was the first of six westerns that Hungarian director Andre de Toth made with veteran western star Randolph Scott. No quite up to Scott's later collaboration with Bud Boetticher, which commenced in 1956 with the marvellous SEVEN MEN FROM NOW. Nevertheless, MAN IN THE SADDLE is a very worthy contribution to the genre. This film also marked the first teaming of producer Harry Joe Brown, with Randolph Scott as associate producer and was known as a SCOTT-BROWN PRODUCTION.

The story was from a novel of the same name by Ernest Haycox. Owen Merritt (Scott) had lost his sweetheart Laurie (Joan Leslie) to local cattle baron Will Isham (Alexander Knox) Isham tries to buy out all the local ranchers by fair means or foul. Merritt resists being drawn into a fight for Laurie or over Isham's land grabbing venture fearing that it will be taken for sour grapes. Plenty of action on the way to the final showdown with Scott assisted by his ranch hands and close-neighbour Nan Melotte (Ellen Drew). The film is memorable for its wonderful night-time photography and a marvellous extended fight in a mountain shack between Merritt and Hugh Clagg (John Russell), which really did "bring the house down". Tennessee Ernie Ford makes a brief appearance and sings the title song. High quality transfer to DVD

...what more do you need? Scott does what he does best in this above average western made with high production values and a touch of angst. Good classic supporting cast and good locations as well as excellent direction make this oater stand alone and stand out in Scott's film's from the 50's.Good,clear DVD issue make this a must.

4 out of 5 stars Better Randy Scott Western.......2005-08-14

MAN IN THE SADDLE (1951) is a very fine little Western, directed by the underrated director Andre De Toth, with a fine screenplay written by Kenneth Gamet. Despite the formulaic story line, the film never drags or dawdles. Randy Scott illustrates, once again, all the fine acting characteristics that made him one of the top ranking "Western" actors of all time. Alexander Knox, an interesting choice for the villain, adds much to the story. Other members of the cast, including Alfonso Bedoya and John Russell, round out this solid oater, well worth investigating. Finally, the title song is sung by none other than "Tennessee Ernie Ford," and remains in the memory long after the movie's images are gone....

Winner of numerous awards including Best Actor at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, In the Mood for Love confirmed that Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai is a major figure in world cinema. As passionate as it is politely discreet, his film takes place in 1962 Hong Kong, where neighboring apartment dwellers Mr. Chow (Tony Leung) and Mrs. Chan (Maggie Cheung) discover that their oft-absent spouses are having an affair. This realization parallels their own mutual attraction, but fidelity and decency ensure that their intimate bond remains unspoken though deeply understood. With a stealthy, eavesdropping camera style and a screenplay created through spontaneous on-set inspiration, Wong Kar-wai crafts an intricate, finely tuned platonic romance, enhancing its ambience with a kaleidoscope of color (most notably in Cheung's dazzling wardrobe of cheongsam dresses) and careful attention to character detail. Deservedly placed on many critics' top 10 lists, this elegant film should not be missed. --Jeff Shannon

I was more engrossed in this film than I should have been. It has a very simple plot. No twists and turns. Just the one question: "Will they or won't they?"

Basically, it's the prolonged musings of a man and woman thrown together because their spouses are having an affair. They're too principled to readily give into their own obvious chemistry. Or are they?

Like the other Wong Kar Wai films I have seen, this is beautifully directed and photographed. It is set in Hong Kong of the 1960s, therefore, vaguely familiar to us Westerners who remember the 1960s. But, if I watch it again, it will be to revel in Maggie Cheung's sex appeal, due especially to the form-fitting cheongsom dresses popular in Hong Kong the 60s.

5 out of 5 stars What's so special about Criterion Collection?.......2007-06-07

Of course, I dig the movie. But does anyone know why Criterion Collection costs twice as much? Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars QING!.......2007-05-18

Is this another of Amazon's DVD language oversights? For the single DVD version of In the Mood for Love they list the film's language as ENGLISH! YET the language of the Criterion version (which is more than double the price of the single version and that Amazon sells) the language is listed correctly as Cantonese.

What gives with Amazon - is the Criterion in Cantonese and the single DVDs in English? Qing!(Please!)

5 out of 5 stars wow awesome film.......2007-04-29

i have to say the film was one of my faves. when i read the plot outline i saw it was boring and slow and dumb and i thought "pfff i aint buyin this!" but then i watched a commercial for it (yea im obsessed w/ commercials) and just in the commercial itself the cinimatography (sp?) was AMAZING.
the film was slow and if wong kar-wai wanted, he could do the same story in 30 minutes but it would never ever meet the graceful and elegant movie here. the slowness is not boring but enchanting and beautiful. its a film of its own kind. i strongly sujest it.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to a dream!.......2007-04-19

I bought this DVD after reading a review on a magazine about they way it was beautifully shot and referring to the movie as a wonder to look at. Well, I have to say that this movie by far exceeded my already grand expectations of it. It truly is like entering a dream in which you feel like a close spectator of a reality that defies reality. You know it is not real; yet, you can't help but stare and believe. The scenary is just something that will haunt you for days. The music is just amazing and complements the visual effects very well. It adds to the surreal dream-like aura. The dialogue does not waste a single line. From the get-go, we are being seduced into a trance that allows the movie to capture us and take our imagination to another place. This movie is like a hallucinogenic that allows us to marvel at the simplest of things like the sound of a heavy rain. It has taught me that sometimes you say the most by not saying much and just listening and observing. That's what you should all do...get this movie, listen and observe.

Product Description

In December of 1969, four months after Woodstock, the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane gave a free concert in Northern California, east of Oakland at Altamont Speedway. About 300,000 people came, and the organizers put Hell's Angels in charge of security around the stage. Armed with pool cues and knifes, Angels spent the concert beating up spectators, killing at least one. The film intercuts performances, violence, Grace Slick and Mick Jagger's attempts to cool things down, close-ups of young listeners (dancing, drugged, or suffering Angel shock), and a look at the Stones later as they watch concert footage and reflect on what happened. ++++ DVD FEATURES: This officially licensed release from South Korea is All-Region NTSC Code 0 (playable worldwide) with Full Screen display and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound in ENGLISH with optional (removeable) English or Korean subtitles. 5 out of 5 stars Stones shine amid the horror.......2005-12-01

Watching this after a screening of WOODSTOCK is a real study in contrast. ALTAMOUNT was always on my radar, growing up, and I had seen this in the theater back in the 70s, but revisiting it now ... what a revelation. There was a perception that WOODSTOCK had been an incredibly significant event in the counter-culture galaxy; a peace+love tribal congress. This concert came four months later, and because it was the west coast rebuttal to the upstate NY megafest, would be even better - better bands, better drugs, hipper hippies, freakier clothes, groovier vibes. The crowd shots are both revealing, and inevitably, terrifying as the claustraphobic crush tightens around the stage (crowd control plans, anyone?) and the HELLS ANGELS react like bears in cages being poked with sticks ... they erupt in an orgy of beatdowns and over-the-top violence. After all, that's what they do. Was anyone truly surprised? The various bands (Airplane, Santana, Dead, Stones) are merely ineffectual witnesses (with a good view) to what goes on, tho Marty Balin does get coldcocked during the Airplane set. I'm sure the musicians to this day feel fortunate that they did not get stomped on stage by the ever-growing legion of wild-eyed, wooly strangers standing nearby. (keep an eye out for the 300 lb. naked man careening through the crowd) If Woodstock gave us a pleasant marijuana buzz, Altamount grinds our collective molars with a bad blend of street meth and bootleg LSD. Man, am I glad I wasn't there.
All this being said, a good portion of this excellent documentary features the Stones backstage, in the recording studio, on the road, and performing with aplomb at a Madison Square Garden show. In '69, after all, they were in midseason form.

3 out of 5 stars Makes a better series than movie.......2005-08-11

A few years ago I decided to watch Starblazers: Quest for Iscandar on account of simple nostalgia. Watching all of the episodes took quite a bit of time, however, so I decided that rather than sit through the entire Comet Empire series, I would just watch the condensed version, the original movie CE was derived from.

There are major story differences between the movie and the series. Essentially, this movie doesn't exist in the overall Yamato/Starblazers continuity. Since the series could not have possibly continued with the movie ending, it was disclaimed shortly after release by the powers that be, serialized, and given a much more upbeat ending as the Comet Empire season we all remember here in the US.

The movie ending is not only a surprise, it also has serious problems for an American audience. Namely, after watching for over 2 hours, I expected an ending that would at least make some sense. Apparently, the japanese characters that appear let you know exactly what happened, but all I saw was the Argo floating away into the distance and a small flash of light. This is a major letdown, particularly after several previous false endings.

On the plus side, the music and animation are a startling improvement on Iscandar, and the Andromeda was really cool, with its double barrelled Wave Motion, errrm, Undulation Gun. Although I am not a big fan of Japanimation and this is probably considered some sort of heresy among its crowd, I'll take the Comet Empire series over the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Somber and simple.......2006-08-08

Writer director, Cacoyannis has done numerous films and probably the most popular is the 50's movie, Zorba the Greek which starred Anthony Quinn.

This black and white 1956 Greek film tells the story of a family two adult children, Marina, a beautiful young woman, her brother Mitso, now unemployed, and the mother, who became a widow at 32. The father was a merchant with wealth and now, the family's home is in disrepair and they are hounded by shame, hate and death, and more recently toward the mother, who is looked upon as a [...], simply because she needs love and affection too.

When two men arrive from Athens for relaxation and the family rents the upstairs to the men, and the writer, also known as a playboy, falls for Marina. The young men in the community, mostly strapping handsome men, view Marina as a stuck-up who doesn't talk to anyone. We learn from the past that Christo was in love with Mariana before, but he used her plain-looking sister to get to Marina and that sister drowned by the hurt. Christo and his buddies taunt her and her family and for laughs, they play a trick on the man from Athens who is in love with her. The cruel trick goes awry with devastating results.

With color, the views in Greece would be gorgeous. Don't expect a really memorable film, it is somber and simple. No other special features come with the DVD. ...MzRizz

5 out of 5 stars michael cacoyannis: A girl in Black.......2005-08-03

In this film two Athenians, an architect and a novelist, on holiday in a Greek island, are confronted with an archaic society merciless in the double standards it applies to men and women it sees as sexual offenders, in this case a love-starved widow and her bragging seducer. The novelist's wooing of the widow's daughter (the Girl in Black) stirs up trouble with the girl's rejected suitor, and their rivalry leads to a situation of almost unbearable suspense and a tragedy that neither could have foreseen. The harsh world of the island, beautifuly and appropriately filmed in stark black and white under the relentless glare of the Mediterranean sun, forms the backdrop to a tale of extreme cruelty mitigated only by the empathy that is one of Cacoyannis's most appealing characteristics. His direction is largely responsible for the success this magnificent film enjoyed in its day, as is the photography of Walter Lassally, who performed prodigies of skill with the one camera that was apparently allotted to him for this low-cost film made entirely on location. The director is well served by a trio of sensitive actors, Dimitri Horn, George Foundas and, last but not least, the poignantly beautiful Ellie Lambetti, who plays the title role.

Despite the archaism of the society it depicts, "A Girl in Black" has lost none of its interest today and it is hard to explain why this masterpiece is not better known.

The Girl in Black "reveals Elli Lambetti as an actress of truly tragic stature." The story of a young Athenian writer on holiday who falls in love with a girl of impoverished gentility and is unable to respond to her. A disaster provoked by spiteful peasants shocks him into a new awareness of his own involvement in life. The film has a simplicity and a vibrancy that make it stand out from even the best of foreign films.
