Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting.......2007-04-05
I would recommend this for anyone. It's something that draws your attention so well. Sometimes you follow individual people in their efforts to explain some wild weather, and other times see tragic advents or watch amazing footage or learn about the science and nature about a certain storm. A tornado, perhaps, or an earth quake. Sometimes you even get some history with different time periods.
I will never regret watching this. It's made me more aware of storms than ever before.
One of the Best DVD sets.......2005-06-08
You will love this DVD set by National Geographic. They have put some of there best shows in this collection. It has some great bonus features too. I love watch documentaries about nature and are plant. This set was very informative and great to watch. Nature Fury was the best out of all 3 shows.
A decent exploration of Mother Nature and global weather.......2004-04-07
The Restless Earth Collection by National Geographic explores aspects of natural disasters, space phenomena (asteroids), and weather systems that affect our world throughout our lives. Spread out over 3 discs, the material is presented in a well narrated, matter of fact approach that keeps your interest throughout the programs.
'Asteroids: Deadly Impact' explores the history of asteroid and comet strikes on our planet and speculates on what future consequences we might experience when (the law of averages are we will be hit again someday) that impact occurs. Interviews with experts on heavenly bodies and our solar system reveal interesting information regarding our ever changing galaxy.
'Volcano: Nature's Inferno' is an excellent documentary on the massive and awesome display of incredible power harnessed by the earth. Volcanologists are followed to various areas of the globe where they research, report on, and study some of the earth's most active volcanoes. There is really impressive footage of lava flows, eruptions, landslides, and avalanches. A bonus feature on this disc is 'Into the Volcano' where a seasoned photographer and his crew venture close to active volcanoes and craters and record amazing footage.
The last and most interesting disc in this collection, in my opinion, is 'Nature's Fury'. Here is a no holds barred look at earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods. The overwhelming power and devastation of these natural disasters have to be seen to be believed and it is truly astonshing in almost all cases. This disc documents Mother Nature releasing her fury in locations throughout the globe and how science is working today to better understand what causes these disasters to happen and how we can better prepare for it. Two bonus programs on this disc are 'Tornado Hunters' and 'Lightning Strikes', both are interesting and offer decent material.
All in all, National Geographic has produced a nice collection here that doesn't disappoint. The DVD footage is very clear and impressive and each disc offers Dolby 5.1 Surround which sounds really good. If there is any down side at all, it may be that more footage would have been nice of the natural disasters (tornadoes, hurricanes) and that is my reason for only 4 stars. Still, for the asking price, this is a worthwhile purchase if you enjoy this subject material. Recommended.

The wit and whimsy of John Linnell and John Flansburgh, collectively known as They Might Be Giants, is on display in this thoroughly entertaining video compilation. Twelve of the group's videos (dating from the mid-'80s to 1998) are here, filled with all manner of craziness and looking and sounding great. But the real prize may be the two clips from Tiny Toon Adventures, marrying TMBG's silly but also smart and clever music with the cartoon series' riotous animation; the twin Giants actually didn't write "Istanbul (Not Constantinople)," a "Puttin' On the Ritz" soundalike that's also one of the 12 main videos (with different animation), but it fits their style to a T. All of this quirkiness and freneticism can get a bit wearying after a while, but in small doses it's lots of fun. DVD extras include Linnell and Flansburgh's straightforward, informative audio commentary; there are also bonus audio tracks, a live video, and more. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:
Good TMBG, better time capsule.......2005-09-15
This excellent compilation of video work from They Might Be Giants could in one sense be a model of how to combine images with music. The artistry here shows that songs mixed with imaginative visuals can, in the right hands, become more than the sum of their parts, and with most of these, that is exactly what happens.
It's almost worth the DVD alone for not one, but two versions of "Istanbul(Not Constantinople)," both using animation, but in completely different styles. The song is catchy enough on its own, but the visual elements make it irresistible. Other favorites are "Snail Shell," "The Statue Got Me High" and "They'll Need a Crane," as well as the now-classic "(She Was A) Hotel Detective."
If not every single track is at the same high level, never mind. This DVD is still a terrifically entertaining document that shows these guys at their creative best, not to mention valuable for marking their progession over the years. The extras are good, too, but the videos are so good -- and the price is so low -- that any extras almost don't matter.
MTV - is it Art?.......2005-04-11
Maybe a Picasso or a Garfunkel. Like all new forms, a lot of the most creative usage of MTV occurred when MTV was brand new. These guys could dominate largely because there was so little there as precedent.
We institutionalize everything. That is the end point of human endeavor.
But these guys were successful so long as they could set the bar for the next player. If they've done that, they're going to be long remembered.
Oh, how paltry MTV looks now!.......2004-02-11
Jonathan, you might want to check your DVD player, because I had none of the problems you had -- "Play All" DOES play all, and all of the videos have commentary. A few of the older videos are grainy, but I suspect that's more due to the source material, and I doubt they'd go to the trouble of professionally touching up and restoring them.
I don't know why they bothered to put the Quicktime "home movies" on the disc. I thought it was odd that they didn't make them available as regular DVD "special features" videos, but then I found out -- they're VERY low quality, and they're only about a minute each -- just snippets of the songs. There could have been much more in the way of extras, but, fortunately, there's a treasure trove of extras available on the _Gigantic_ DVD, and the ones that are included here -- the "Tiny Toons" clips, the "fiery" live performance, and the audio tracks -- are not on the _Gigantic_ disc. Plus, the "commentary" for the "Snail Shell" video is actually another song! Overall, this is a great video collection for TMBG fans. (By the way, I'm sure that the reason "Boss of Me" is not included is that it's owned by Fox, so perhaps they couldn't get the rights to it, or didn't think it was worth it, or maybe they're saving it for the next collection...)
Great collection but..........2003-12-26
The collection is great but on the John & John commentary, John Linnell is extremely hard to hear which is extremely dissapointing.
Videos are fun, Commentary is Priceless!.......2003-10-12
This DVD is definitely a must-have for any TMBG Fan. The video commentary is absolutely hilarious! Other extras include a few audio-only songs, and a live video of "Why Does the Sun Shine?".
There's not much more to say. It's just classic TMBG fun!

"Kurtwood Smith's triumphant return to the big screen" -- Ain't It Cool News. In HARD SCRAMBLED Kurtwood Smith (RoboCop, That '70s Show) stars as Bruisin' Benno, an ex-prize fighter and now short order cook at Alice's Diner in what Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times calls a "powerful performance." This dvd includes more than 20 tutorials on directing, writing, producing, and editing your own movie. The Washington Post calls this bonus DVD "...a must for would-be filmmakers."

Fasten your seat belts; it's much more than just "one bumpy night" with this hilarious cast of characters who are always wildly over the top!
Customer Reviews:
love it or leave it.......2007-01-12
This is neither the best movie nor the worst, but middle-ground. I think it attempts to be more than it is, which is mildly eye-popping. if you're the type to actually WATCH soap operas and get a kick out of the spoofing of them, you'd be better off with SOAP (the wonderful sally field movie). If you're into gay films, well there's really not much of that here. sure you have one hubby lamenting the constant provocations of his brother-in-law, but that is only talked about, and you get very little of it on-screen (unfortunately). the majority of the film is the over-the-top imitation bette midler performance offered by the grande dame (really a guy in drag) and her insane hubby. But the acting is all over the place, as sometimes the actors are playing it straight while delivering rotten dialogue (the actress playing cynthia is wonderful) and other times (the actors playing the hubby and the brother nicholas) the acting - and dialogue - are deliberately bad to showcase how bad soaps are in general. I really think the actors here could be good actors, but the thing is, like a lot of soap actors hired for their hunk appeal, they're not meant to be good. But there are some bad casting choices here, mainly the houseboy, who seems to be a twink in search of a - what? I couldn't see the appeal, frankly, and found tiresome all the scenes which were about him or featured him. In fact, it seemed his scenes were all some different - purposeless - movie. One additional bit of carping, that I found distracting, is why are all the men wearing lip gloss? I wanted to take a tissue and wipe all the faces. So if you're looking for a gay film, you're actually better off looking elsewhere. Or just rent this one, for an experiment. this is definitely a love it or leave it film.
Parody and what it is not.......2007-01-08
Joe Castro wrote and directed THE YOUNG, THE GAY AND THE RESTLESS with an obvious attempt to make us giggle at just how preposterous the daytime TV soaps are. In many ways he manages to show us that madness: quick scenes between characters that flash on and off the screen in seconds with only a few lines delivered to make room for the next split second vignette suggestive of commercial breaks; actors that are attractive despite being unable to demonstrate even the basics of the art of acting; situations so over the top that they require one-ups-manship in the next moment to keep the plot from sinking into the absurd.
The plot is simple: a dying unpopular mother Victoria Gaylord (Ms. Elliott is the actor's moniker) is wealthy, married to a lecherous Francis Gaylord (Joe Haggerty), and has a wild group of children of questionable heritage - Cynthia (Holly Karrol Clark) and her narcissistic husband Phillip (Caleb Campbell), Nicholas (Justin Marchert) who has his gay eye on Phillip, Josh (Jeremy Dubois) etc. all of whom have an eye on Victoria's fortune. The Gaylord house is filled with party fixings and among the decorations are the topless butler and his entourage of would be assignations - Damien Christopher, Michael Oliviera, Dennis Richardson, and Kerry Liu. The 'good doctor' Dr Bender (Buck Davis) is called along with his nurse/illegitimate child/fortune hunter (Chris Brown) and the many secrets of this absurd family all surface with the subsequent murder, brain transplant, ménage a quatre...it just goes on and on.
Parody on the order of, say, Gilbert and Sullivan can be witty, acerbic, naughty, and very intelligent. Castro seems to have written this little bit of treacle in an evening, called in his friends and neighbors to pose and read lines with the emphasis on exaggeration, and quickly turned out a movie for public consumption. Unfortunately the mixture (though a good idea) just doesn't work. One 'good' but still annoying aspect of the film is the presence of a music score obviously added in the editing room at a level that covers the lines so that they are inaudible: that is a mixed blessing. This is a film for the curious viewer who has a lot of patience and easy laugh quotient. Grady Harp, January 07
Pretty bad.......2007-01-06
This dvd had its moments, but only a few. I enjoy camp, and have a good sense of humor, but there was very little humor here. The acting and dialogue were so poor that I couldn't enjoy the camp value that was intended. Sound quality was also very poor; at various points in the movie I couldn't hear what was being said because of the loud background music. Not worth the money by a long shot!
Pure Camp.......2006-12-31
"THE YOUNG, THE GAY AND THE RESTLESS"
Pure Camp
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
There is something about drama queens. They manage to get themselves into all kinds of situations and they can be extremely tiring. "The Young, the Gay and the Restless" (Ariztical) has more than its share of drama queens and they are fun. This campy satire on television soap operas with grabby friends and deceitful relatives is just fun.
Victoria Gaylord is very rich. She also has an illness that cannot be cured and she invites all of her relatives to come to her home and share her last few days. Little does she know that they are planning to take over her wealth. This comedy has so many twists and turns that sometimes you feel you need a road map t keep everything--shall I say--straight?
* Quite honestly I expected this to be a really bad movie. The original screener I received from Ariztical would not play on my DVD player or my computer and I took this as a sign that the movie wasn't worth my time. I was very much in error. I found myself laughing aloud several times. This is a real gay comedy. To make it more believable and to resemble a soap opera, there are a few straight characters thrown in for balance. Everything about the movie resembles soap--the acting, the editing, the sets and the film work.
* I can't say the acting is memorable aside from being memorably bad. And the script needs work. For a movie like this, you have to take it for exactly what it is--a spoof, a satire. But to write a good satire is not easy and that is what bothered me the most. I saw so much that could have been improved and I saw the seeds for a really funny movie. Instead we get a fun movie that is occasionally funny. It is too bad that those occasions are when it is not supposed to be funny.
* But there are good things in the movie as well and you may have to search for them. I have read several reviews but I have yet t read one that in some way did not slam this movie, I am not going to slam it, I had a good time with it because I knew what I was watching. As silly as it was, it is an attempt t broaden gay cinema and to me that is very important. Every movie can't be a "Brokeback Mountain" and every comedy is not "Another Gay Movie". I say that we have to give newcomers a chance and although this is a movie that is far from perfect, it is a start and everyone deserves that.
HILLARIOUS sendup of soaps with gay characters!.......2006-12-17
In this clever, over-the-top satire of daytime soap operas, "The Young, The Gay and The Restless" (2006) especially pokes fun at the current trend of including gay characters in such shows, by providing a storyline where everyone seems to be gay, married to someone gay, flirting with someone gay, or contemplating murdering a gay character. And, like actual daytime "soaps", there's several plots going on simultaneously, as well as instances of cheating spouses, sexual predators, longtime grudges, incest, sluts, suicide, jealousy, gold-digging relatives worried about their inheritance, a secret past criminal record, and even a bisexual foursome as a bit of icing on the cake.
In charge of this extended dysfunctional family is elderly but feisty and rich matriarch Victoria Gaylord, who brings everyone together for her birthday celebration, which is cut short when she has a fainting spell. Her husband, Francis (who has some skeletons in the closet as well), calls Dr. Bender who arrives on scene and proceeds to argue with Francis about who has her best interests in mind. Daughter Cynthia arrives at the party late with her husband Phillip, who is concerned that his wife is a bit TOO close to one of her brothers, and is also afraid of being "hit on" by gay brother Nicholas. Meanwhile, flirty gay houseboy Andrew is juggling a couple of prospective future as well as one former boyfriend, all of whom show up to court him, as does a young lady who wants to be Andrew's "try it once" woman. Dr. Bender's sassy assistant, Nurse Jones, arrives last, but her treatment plan for Victoria isn't exactly what others had in mind.
A well-written, campy, tacky, sarcastic, (intentionally and brilliantly) overacted and hillarious treat, not to be missed! The only negative is a technical gaffe: the background music is way too loud, and sometimes drowns out the dialogue. But I can't hold that important enough to give this creative confection less than a full five stars out of five! DVD has no extras, other than chapter stops.

A TIRELESS FIRST LADY.......2000-11-26
Orphaned at an early age, rejected by relatives who thought she was ugly, and very shy, Eleanor Roosevelt's prospects for the future looked dim. Even her marriage to her distant cousin, Franklin, wasn't great. She was dominated by her mother-in-law and he was a womanizer. What could the future possibly hold for such a plain woman?
Eleanor Roosevelt surprised them all! Biography gives a wonderful review of a woman coming into her own sense of self. Eleanor redefined the role of the First Lady. Her deep caring for people, love of politics and tireless energy made her the equal of her husband. The two formed an alliance which made them partners in politics but gave them seperate social lives. Eleanor served as Franklin's emissary as she traveled around the world explaining his programs and finding out the needs of the common person.
Biography reveals the tensions in the marriage, their intimate lives with other people,Eleanor's emerging independence and her political awareness. She was more active in the political scene than any other First Lady. Although she was the representative of her husband, she also had her own ideas and concerns that moved beyond the political realm.
Enjoy this film where you will see a woman who had a great impact on the political scene. Watch how she moved from a shy dominated woman to a self assured matron who was a force to be reckoned with in her own right.

Come on, it's funny!.......2007-01-17
We all know this movie isn't going to win any awards but come on! Lighten up! We all know why we watch these kinds of movies...and it isn't for special effects. haha. If you like cheesy movies with a good amount of sex in it, you'll like this one. If nothing else, you'll get a good laugh.
PSYCHIC STINKER.......2005-03-27
This so called psychic thriller is no more than a soft porn attempt to show off siliconized breasts and hairy male butts. Now if that's your cup of tea, then drink this one in. But if you like your "b" movies a little more tasteful, RESTLESS SOULS is not for you. A newlywed couple on their way home from the wedding have car trouble and seek help in an apparently abandoned house. Now who in their right mind would stay in a house like this, where everything seems "just planned" for them? Needless to say, the place is haunted by the spirit of a Civil War general who made a pact with the devil in order to assure the South's victory. Of course, we know the South came out on the losing end, so why does this ghost want to keep his pact with the devil by having a virginal woman conceive the devil's offspring? He says he wants to get vengeance on all those Union Southerners who betrayed him? Oh, joy!!! The psychic "professionals" include a stern professor; a somewhat laidback professor of some kind who can touch things and see what happened and will happen; a telekinetic young sexbomb and another sexbomb who lures the ghosts in for a last seduction. The highlight (?) of the movie is the telekinetic masturbation and oral sex scenes that save the day. Yuck, this movie is so unabashedly stupid and its attempts at eroticism are miserably executed. Avoid or buy some stinkypoo remover when you're done with this one!
Uh, Hello?.......2004-08-03
"lecudedag" was right with his description, but come on! This movie is great. It's cheesy, sure. Why is that a bad thing? What do you expect from movies like this? Movies like these aim to be cheesy. Most people know this going in.
The petite girl mentioned is Ahmo "Amy" Hight. She does have fake breasts, but they're not freakish or anything. If you have ever seen the movie "Hotel Exotica", she was the younger sister. IMHO, she's hot. I think she used to be a gymnast. You can tell. ;-)
If you like late-night Cinemax films, you'll probably like this. If you like the "Sex Files" films, you will most likely love this. At least rent it if you're skeptical.
Give it a rest!.......2003-07-11
Restless souls is the story of 'erotic possession'. A young married couple are lured by strange circumstance to an abandoned hotel.
The 'virginal' bride, petit as she is, has the most faked boobs - probably a wedding-present from the in-laws. She is seduced by an evil spirt - some kind of throwback from the US Civil War. She vanishes, and her hubby calls in a team of ghostbusters to rescue her... only they all have sex a lot as well.
Very little plot, saved only by some nice looking nude women - but not worth the purchase price.

Description
There is no doubt that spirits of some kind exist. Whether they are ghosts in the paranormal sense or merely the memories of long ago tragedies, MORE HAUNTED HOUSES visits five homes where the past impresses itself on the present. At each one, psychics, scholars and descendants of the people involved help to tell fascinating stories from beyond the grave. At the Donnelly Farm in Lucan, Ontario, a family of Irish immigrants was burned to death over a century ago. The descendants of the vigilantes who killed them are still haunted by the long-ago crime. California's Winchester House was specifically built to house the spirits of those killed with the legendary Winchester rifle--but does it also house the ghost of the eccentric woman who had the mansion built? On New Orleans' Rue Royale, people say the spirit of the black mistress of a rich white man still haunts the site of their forbidden love. The shade of a "devil baby," abandoned at birth in Chicago's Hull House, is said to reside within those walls. And a building that is now a housing complex for Army Officers is overshadowed by the fate of Mary Surratt, who was hung there for her role in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. You don't have to believe in ghosts to be enchanted by the spooky stories of MORE HAUNTED HOUSES.
