SUSPENSE CLASSICS 50 MOVIE PACK is a nicely mixed collection of lesser known thrillers, both domestic and imported. Half of these are foreign productions, while a small percentage were originally made-for-TV. Video quality of MILL CREEK ENTERTAINMENT products tends to be good and for the price you definitely can't go wrong with their SUSPENSE CLASSICS set.
The current average 1 to 10 scoring for these 50 titles (as voted on by users of a film data website) is: 4.7.
Program list is alphabetized and includes individual movie ratings, original titles (in parentheses), years of release (and country, if other than USA) as well as principal actors.

I won't resell this because..........2007-01-27
I would not want anyone else to be subjected to these choices of movies. Upon afterthought of when I read the reviews before I made the purchase, I began to wonder if maybe some hadn't been paid. The sellers(Mill Creek)could certainly have offered ten people a hundred dollars each + or - to write a seemingly regular person review, but make it reasonably positive enough to cause people to try out the DVD set. Hence, a simple $1000 advertising budget. So without emotion or fanfare, I will itemize my experience with this set.
I saw 41 of the 50 movies. The nine I did not see were because the write-up of them already told me the content was not something that I wanted to fill my mind with. Most of them were European/Italian made. Out of those, about 1/2 dozen had such bad sound I was unable to understand them. (If just the sound had been fixed a little, I would have been willing to pay a couple dollars more.) Three were so hokey, I did not continue viewing them. Four had content that was on the verge of sick. And the most surprising of all, ten had nudity from complete to partial. For those who value the beauty and sanctity of the created body and its intimacy in marraige, and prefer not to degrade it by exposure and abuse, this information would be appreciated. For those who don't care, so be it. That leaves seventeen that range from bearable to a few good. Even with the good ones, however, the sound was not great.
Now for the itemization of costs. New, at $19 (including S&H), 50 movies would be around $.38 each. Sorting through the trashy ones to get the possible 17 viewable movies makes each one around $1.11. I won't argue that is an okay price, but to find the 17, who wants to fill their mind with what I've just done? I wish I'd never seen the images I did, and I did turn off several after I found out what they were about, but that did not take care of having to be surprised and see them in the first place. That is why I will not resell this set. I am now going to throw the entire set into the garbage
Suspense Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection.......2007-01-13
50 DVD for less than $15? How can one complain. I bought this item with the full understanding that the DVDs were not remastered. The picture quality on some was poor and some good. However they are all viewable and quite entertaining. I have not seen all of them but from the few I have seen, I would recommend this product to anyone who likes pure black and white suspense from the past but is willing to overlook some flaws in picture quality.

Angela Lansbury does the honors as Agatha Christie's determined sleuth, Miss Marple, in this adaptation of Christie's novel. A washed-up movie star (Elizabeth Taylor) is attempting to make a comeback but is driven to distraction by a mysterious event from her past. Also problematic for Taylor's struggling actress is a series of murders occurring with clockwork regularity in the quiet, 1950s English village where a film is being produced--killings that are all somehow connected to her. Despite the British backdrop, most of the suspects, including Rock Hudson, Kim Novak, and Tony Curtis, are American in this 1980 feature directed by Guy Hamilton (Evil Under the Sun). (At least Miss Marple's nephew, the redoubtable Inspector Craddock, is played by Edward Fox.) The bad news: this is a curiously flat, monotonous film, with a mystery hook that, sad to say, is among Christie's more familiar and predictable. Hamilton doesn't demand much of his largely ornamental cast, and they don't volunteer much to fill the void. Still, fans of Miss Marple and Christie, especially those with a burning hunger to see every film or television program based on the books, will want to check it out. This DVD edition is presented in the film's original widescreen format, and it includes television spots that were part of the film's marketing at the time of its theatrical release. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
"What are you supposed to be, a birthday cake?".......2007-06-12
There are about five glorious minutes in this 1980 adaptation of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple whodunnit when Elizabeth Taylor and Kim Novak--all in purple and pink (respectively)--face off against one another as rival aging movie queens at a St. Mary's Mead function and try to outdo one another with great catty zingers. This must have been the only possible reason why these two came out of retirement to do this film (that and the chance to wear some great Tudor costumes as Mary, Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I in the film-within-a-film they're making), because otherwise there's not much point to this movie, which falls somewhat dully. Rock Hudson and Tony Curtis also appear in duller roles as a director and producer, and they don't get much spark going; even Taylor seems sort of benumbed through the whole thing except for her great scene whooping it up with Novak. Only Novak herself really seems to be having a good time. Angela Lansbury works hard as Miss Marple (it has even been suggested this performance cinched her job for many years as Jessica Fletcher in MURDER SHE WROTE), but she acts far too grandly for the part, and seems hampered by the aging make-up they used. While the period costumes fare a bit better (Taylor has a purple and white sprigged turban that must be seen to be believed), the sets are as terrible as the make-up: everything seems done by Laura Ashley and looks not in the least like 1950s Britain.
There's a great howler of a flashback at the end of the film where Taylor's character is doing a 1940's USO show and the director mericlessly cuts between closeups of her plump face and then of her body double's slim figure shown from the back that's about as technically sophisticated as THE PATTY DUKE SHOW. Other than that sequence and the catfight, there's not much else worth seeing.
"A bit of a bore. . . but you don't kill someone for that!".......2007-02-16
Well, I actually liked this version of Agatha Christie's murder mystery, because it swayed from the pretentious. It was like wanting to see a great "cop" movie and got stuck watching "Police Academy." Honestly, there is no way this movie could be taken seriously, it was a joyfest for the aging movie stars to give it one last rumble.
A young celebrity fan gets caught up as the victim, by the murderer who discovers a hidden secret from them, that destroyed their life. However, the victim is meant to appear as a mistaken murder, with the murderer posing as the actual intended victim. Not a bad plot in reality, but lost in muddled star cameos. I hate to say it, but I entirely looked at this movie as a comedy, and glad I did. It worked better that way, than real mystery drama.
Agatha Christie's he Mirror Cracked.......2007-01-12
This story is not one of Christie's best in my opinion, where Miss Marple becomes involved in the glamourous world of films. All star cast but not an all star script. Lansbury is fine as Miss Marple, but rather different from Joan Higdon who has made the character her own. A must for Christie fans, but not one of the best.
"Murder, She Droned".......2006-07-18
For anybody that is expecting production values similar to those of the best TV mysteries of the nineties and later (like the Marple series with Geraldine McEwan or David Suchet's Poirot) this production will be a big disappointment. Angela Lansbury makes a really awful Marple and the addition of various "big name" stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson ruin the mood even further since the director is apparently forced to linger and linger on meaningless scenes that give the "stars" extra screen time.
The sets look like somebody decided to save money by putting in the minimum effort to make them look like they came from 1953. You could barely tell the difference between the interiors from this film and what you would expect to see on Magnum P.I.
Although this is probably one of the less exciting Miss Marple stories the terrible production values, awful casting, and absurd cliches ruin whatever chances this had of being watchable.
The Mirror Crack'd.......2006-07-03
Movie arrived in excellent condition in the expected week.
Can't claim. I watched the movie and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dirk Bogarde risked his career to make this 1962 film about a lawyer who risks his career to stand up to blackmailers. Part crime thriller and part plea for tolerance, Victim uses the terror of a blackmailing ring to point out the injustice of Britain's antisodomy laws. Bogarde plays Melville Farr, a married lawyer who learns of a blackmail scheme when one of its victims, an old friend, commits suicide rather than tell the police. As Farr conducts an investigation, he must confront his own past. Victim was ahead of its time--it was the first English-language movie to use the word "homosexual"--and as such it seems quaint and stilted at times. Straw-man clichés about homosexuality must be knocked down, and, like in all first-wave issue movies, occasionally characters need to have rather stilted debates. Still, the crime plot stands on its own, the performances are excellent, and the film is brave enough to make some very good points. This is an interesting and worthy bit of cinematic history. --Ali Davis
Customer Reviews:
Victim.......2007-07-02
Basil Dearden's tense, gripping drama was daring for the time in addressing the victimization of closeted homosexuals by unscrupulous criminals. Bogarde is superb as Farr (no relation), and Sylvia Syms shines as his stoic wife. Extremely effective film helped launch a reform of laws against homosexual activity in England.
great movie.......2007-01-03
this is an excellent movie.
great story, great direction, and wonderful acting!!!!!
Fascinating Time Capsule of 1960s Perception of Homosexuality.......2006-05-01
Daringly forthright, this suspenseful story of blackmail (expertly performed by a great cast led by Dirk Bogarde) is a valuable time capsule of the pervasive homophobia that dominated all reaches of 1960s society. There are great, timeless moments that remind the audience of simultaneously how far and how little we have progressed since then.
A 30 minute television interview from 1961 with Bogarde is also quite interesting, particularly for American audiences who may only be peripherally aware of his wonderful work on the stage, in film and as an author.
Controversial classic that's more than historically interesting.......2006-04-17
Melville Farr (Dirk Bogarde), a married and highly respected barrister on the verge of making QC, becomes embroiled in a homosexual blackmail plot when a youth he befriended is arrested and commits suicide. As Farr attempts to track down and expose the blackmailers, much to the distress of his secretly gay acquaintances and colleagues, Farr and his wife are forced to confront his own ambiguous sexuality... I hunted this film down because it came up time and again in reviews and discussions about "Brokeback Mountain" and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. It was apparently a pivotal moment in the history of British cinema, being the first movie to use the word "homosexual" let alone pitch an argument against Britain's anti-sodomy laws. That's all a bit irrelevant - almost comical - these days, and certainly no reason to bother watching this unless you're particularly interested in film history. What struck me, however, and what prompts me to recommend this film, is the way it still stands up as a dramatic thriller even today. It's beautifully paced, finely crafted in terms of shooting and editing, and the writing is marvellously fresh. It feels almost contemporary. The way the opening thirty minutes unfold are a short course in screenwriting: just enough information is revealed to keep you engaged, while enough is held back to make it intriguing. For the duration it remains true to the demands of a mystery plot. Never becoming just a social essay, it almost completely resists the urge to preach to the audience, notwithstanding the controversial topic. My only reservation is around the ending - Laura's final decision strikes me as both too needy and too generous to be quite credible. But overall this is an excellent film.
Bogarde's finest hour..........2005-05-16
...well, 90 minutes...
A wonderful and courageous film that Dirk (Death In Venice) Bogarde literally risked his career on. Thankfully the gamble paid off, and the film was a success both in terms of the box office, and also in opening up the debate over the suppressive and archaic laws regarding homosexuality.
I recall an interview in which Dirk talked about how strong and supportive the divine Sylvia Syms had been throughout the making of this classic of the British film industry; and the chemistry between these two superb actors is a major component of the film's power.
As others have pointed out in their superb reviews, homosexuality was still very much illegal in 1961 while film was being made, and even after it was decriminalized in 1967, the age of consent for homosexual sex was 21, while it was only 16 for heterosexual sex.
After much pressure from the GLBT community and other concerned groups, the age of consent for homosexual sex in Britain subsequently dropped to 18 in 1994 and 16 in 1998.
An essential film that may well have been the catalyst for some long overdue social change.

These organized crime stories are fairly obscure second-tier movies. A good percentage of the GANGSTERS 20 MOVIE PACK titles were made outside the USA. There's famous actors in every single one of these films (domestic and foreign); some appear in support. This collection should be of interest, if only for the personnel involved.

Part 1: In this explosive story of revenge and urban violence, Charles Bronson plays Paul Kersey, a bleeding-heart liberal who has a change of opinion after his wife and daughter are violently attacked by a gang of thugs in their apartment. His daughter is raped, his wife raped and murdered. Bronson then turns vigilante as he stalks the mean streets of New York on the prowl for muggers, hoodlums and the like. A violent, controversial film which is frank and original in its treatment of urban crime and the average citizen's helplessness in dealing with it.
~~~~~~~
Part 2: Charles Bronson returns with a vengeance in this sequel to the popular crime thriller DEATH WISH. Bronson reprises his role as vigilante Paul Kersey, whose family is once again victimized after moving to Los Angeles from New York. Kersey is mugged by a gang of street punks who later break into his home and brutally assault his maid and daughter, resulting in their deaths.
~~~~~~~
Part 3: Paul Kersey has moved from LA to New York City to escape the crime and begin anew. But after an dear friend is murdered, the architect-turned-vigilante begins to deliver his own inimitable kind of street justice. The rugged Mr. Bronson is back again as Paul Kersey, the Korean War vet who loves to lure street thugs to surprise endings.
~~~~~~~
Part 4: When his girlfriend's daughter overdoses on toxic "crack," vigilante Paul Kersey explodes into action in an all-out war to exterminate the cocaine network in L.A.
~~~~~~~
Part 5: Aging ex-vigilante Paul Kersey has made a quiet life for himself: he's now a teacher, and engaged to a lovely woman, Olivia. But when Olivia's clothing business is menaced by mobsters -- led by her sadistic ex-husband -- Paul reverts to his old gun-totin', thug-wastin' tendencies, as he attempts to deliver his own brand of justice in a variety of grisly ways.

Customer Reviews:
All the boys want Susan George...even the homicidal ones..........2004-10-31
`In the genre of "virginal babysitter vs. homicidal manic" films, Fright (1971) truly stands alone.' That's what it says on the back of the DVD case...after seeing the film, I find the veracity of that statement to be genuinely false. The film does not stand alone, or even out, among the myriad of other films within the genre, ultimately blending inconspicuously into the pack. Based on a story written by Tudor Gates, whom had two of his other stories translated to film the same year in Lust for a Vampire and Twins of Evil, Fright was directed by Peter Collinson, who previously directed The Italian Job (1969). The film stars two obvious victims of the British dental system in Susan George (Straw Dogs) and Ian Bannen (Flight of the Phoenix). Also appearing are Honor Blackman (Goldfinger), George Cole (The Vampire Lovers), John Gregson (The Lavender Hill Mob), and Dennis Waterman (Scars of Dracula).
As the movie begins, we see a pretty young woman named Amanda (George) arriving at a large and spooky house (Scooby Doo, where are you?!), greeted suspiciously by Helen (Blackman). Amanda has been hired to baby sit while Helen and her husband Jim (Gregson) have a night out on the town (Jim's due for an oil change, I think). After some pleasantries (and booze...would you normally offer the babysitter liquor before you leave? I mean, you can't really keep them away from the stuff once you're gone, but offering it up front kinda opens the door), the couple leave, and Amanda is left alone with the sleeping tot, or so she thinks. She begins hearing noises and seeing faces at various windows, thus causing much freaking out. Her amorous boyfriend Chris (Waterman) arrives, and she quickly blames him as she thinks he was the one at the window earlier trying to scare her (it wasn't). After numerous attempts to get his freak on, Amanda finally kicks him out, but probably wishes she hadn't as a strange figure (Bannen) finds his way into the house and turns a cushy babysitting gig into a night of terror as the stranger is in fact an escaped homicidal maniac (is there any other kind?) with depraved plans of his own.
Fright is listed as a horror, but it tends to lean more towards being a suspenseful thriller (it's rarely suspenseful and hardly thrilling). I had read where someone thought the makers of this film (produced in England) suffered greatly from extremely strict British censorship laws imposed on cinematic sex and violence effectively watered down the proceedings from what they could have been, had the film been produced, say, in the United States. This may be partly true, but a crafty director would have found a way around such impositions, in my opinion. The movie is all right, but pretty much forgettable as I found myself becoming increasingly bored. Most of it takes place within the house, and I would have liked to seen more of it used, rather than just a few rooms. From the outside, it looked large and expansive, so I was expecting more with regards to the interior shots, than I got. I will say many of the elements are present, and put together with the craftsmanship of someone who knows his business (lighting, framing shots, etc.), but there's something missing, a sense of passion for the genre, I think...really good directors manage to infuse a bit of themselves within their films, and it generally shows, but I didn't get that here. I've never really thought of Susan George as an especially talented actress, and she didn't change my opinion here with her constant overacting (Amanda was suffered from bouts of extreme hysteria, which can be quite painful, not to the victim, but to those forced to watch). I think the character required a subtle touch, one not possessed by George. I thought Ms. Blackman did well, but then I suppose maybe I'm a little biased, as she's very easy on the eyes. Bannen's (who I generally like) character seemed entirely paper-thin, hardly presenting the threat we're lead to believe he is...and here is the problem...how can a movie like this be expected to work when the antagonist is does very little to frighten the audience? I will concede (just a little) that given the film was released in 1971, maybe it was a bit scarier then, but today's audiences probably won't think so (Robert Wise's The Haunting, an English production, released in 1963 still has the power to scare, despite its' age or restrictive elements of its' originating country...go check it out)...there are spots of shimmering originality within the story, but those were mired down as we're forced to slog through a great deal of seemingly useless filler. One thing that really annoyed me within this film, and is a common element in many horror type films is the quickness and ease to which the antagonist was able to get around, appearing in one place, and then, if by magical, appearing somewhere else. It's doesn't happen often in this film, but a few times, and given the fact that most of the movie is actually put together well, it tended to stand out. At the end of the day, this is a film I'd expect to see on the Lifetime channel, as it more akin to a `woman in distress' film rather than a chilling, spooky horror movie. If you're looking for something more, I'd suggest Black Christmas (1974) or When a Stranger Calls (1979), both being much more fun.
The widescreen print (1:66:1) provided by Anchor Bay looks really good and very clear (from British vault elements, no less), but I thought the audio a bit soft, even muddled, at times. Special features include an original theatrical trailer, and a detailed biography of the director Peter Collinson. Also included is a nice reproduction of a poster for the film on a card inside the DVD case, the flipside displaying the chapter stops.

Has some creepy moments in the beginning.......2004-10-19
FRIGHT is a British film that probably scared viewers back in 1971, but standards have changed and viewers expect more. FRIGHT is about a young lady (Susan George) who is babysitting for a mother and her boyfriend while they are out for dinner. Problem is, the mother's ex husband has escaped from an asylum and has arrived to seek revenge on whoever is in the house. His motif is not explained, safe to assume it is because he is a fruit loop.
What I liked about FRIGHT is that there are some genuine creepy scenes in the beginning. For example when Susan George is in the kitchen and there is someone out in the courtyard, but she doesn't know this. Allyou want is for her to lock that door, and eventually she does. There are a couple more creepy scenes to follow.
However, after that the film slowly went downhill. The bad plot (or lack of) didn't help matters, nor did the dragging of the film.
I think it is still worth seeing just to see a British attempt at horror/thriller. If anything, you will get a good laugh or two over the acting of the maniac. Fortunately, Susan George was wonderful in her role, very convincing ... so this also deserves credit.
Give it a whirl one Friday night when its cold outside!
ANOTHER FIRST-RATE BRITISH CHILLER!.......2004-10-09
Pretty blonde Amanda (Susan George) arrives at an isolated British manor to look after a young boy for the evening. It seems that the child's mother, Helen (Honor Blackman), is hiding a dark secret: She has a crazy ex-husband locked away in a nearby asylum. The secret is out when the psycho escapes and returns home for revenge. He terrorizes the babysitter while Helen and her new boyfriend are out on the town.
One of the first babysitter-in-peril flicks, Peter Collinson's FRIGHT is also one of the best. George gamely takes on a role that requires her to maintain a state of terror while being assaulted by a non-stop bag of horrors. The results were so convincing that she played another victim later that year in Sam Peckinpah's STRAW DOGS. Ian Bannen's performance is also a triumph. He actually makes you feel a great deal of sympathy for the male maniac.
Horrible!.......2003-11-30
This is without a doubt, the WORST "horror" film I have ever seen, and I've seen them all. It is slow, plodding, and outright laughable. The fact that Susan George is beautiful dosent't make up for the fact that this story was so predictable, the "frights" so laughable and the acting so pitiful. Yes, it may have started the "trapped babysitter" genre, but it is horrible. If you truly want to see a great "trapped babysitter" film, rent Halloween.
A forgotten horror gem.......2002-05-24
A truly frightening film. Babysitter (Susan George) is hired to take care of kid, while couple goes to dinner. But that couple has a skeleton in its closet in the form of the woman's ex-husband who once tried to kill her. He's sent away to a psychiatric hospital, but escapes and decides to get even with wife who put him there.
Film contains truly scary sequences and is a hundred times better than the generic "babysitter in peril" that appeared during the late 70's-early 80's. Acting is superb throughout, and Ian Brennan as the psychotic ex-husband is truly brillant. Film is a must see for horror fans.
