5 out of 5 stars Due South - Season 1.......2007-05-18

You just can't say enough good things about Due South, the storylines, actors and music were always entertaining.

I am completely satisfied with the product, quality, delivery and am just happy I have Benny to keep.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Canadian Content.......2007-05-07

How good is the first season of Due South? The pilot and several episodes were written by later Oscar winner Paul Haggis (Crash), which is a good way to start. The show was a perfect amalgum of humor, action, and drama. A joint US/Canadian production, canadians watching the show could mock the portrayal of crass Americans while American audiences could laugh at the overly-polite Mountie Benton Fraser, played by Paul Gross. While the show played up the culture clash between the US and Canada for laughs, many of the plots dealt with poor, desperate people in tragic circumstances. The two part episode Victoria's Secret, in which Fraser's world comes crashing down when he falls for the wrong woman, is as good as network TV can get.

5 out of 5 stars season 1.......2007-05-04

I first got into this show through fanfiction. After scouring the internet and reading various reviews, I was a bit reluctant to buy this show. After all, what's the point if the picture quality is bad? The menus don't really bother me.

All in all I absolutely love it. Picture quality is one of the best I've seen in a long time. My only real problem with the dvd set is the sound, the music being louder than the vocal. I sincerely recommend this show to everyone. Paul Gross is hilarious as Constable Ben Fraser and David Marciano as Vecchio works wonders. A very good show.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show!.......2007-03-17

Because it is still not available in german :-( I ordered Season 1 in the USA. What should I say? Just enjoy the uncommon characters and plots of the episodes. That 's really special! And although I love this TV show so much, it is nice that it comes to an satisfying end. A lot of schows don't accomplish this (sadly "X-Files"), because they go the "commerce" way at some point. This show stops on the top.

So, thank you kindly!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Series That Deserves A Better DVD In America.......2007-02-01

The first season in a couple of words is simply fantastic. The story of a Mountie and his wolf teaming up with a Chicago detective makes a really interesting story that works. Paul Gross is definitely the right choice to play the lead in this series and Benton Fraser. Some stories are funny and others are touchingly emotional. Even now, this series hasn't aged one bit and it is a shame that it is never talked about much here in the US. Great episodes are in this season, but the DVD is lacking when it comes to content and picture. No special features are to be found on this DVD and the picture quality isn't the best, with streaks appearing for a couple of seconds in about three episodes, but most of the time it is great. But with those small flaws, the episodes are so great, all of the mistakes with the American DVD can be forgiven. This is definitely a great series that is recommend for all.

4 out of 5 stars Due South - Season 2 DVD.......2007-06-20

My family and I loved this 2nd series as well as the 1st one.
It's so much fun and always gives us a good laugh.
Not only that at times it can be sad and you really 'feel' for the characters. There's usually plenty of action too.
This is a very cleverly written series.
I wish there were more like it!!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as season 1, but still worthwhile.......2007-05-07

Season 2 of Due South isn't quite up to season one's standards--creator (and subsequent Oscar winner for Crash) Paul Haggis had less to do with the show, and star Paul Gross began taking over as writer and executive producer. The show is still excellent, but the humor became broader (Leslie Nielsen's character, played straight for drama in season 1, now has persistent flatulence) and the situations less realistic. For the price it is still a great deal for fans of the show, but season 2's drop in quality presaged the further drop when the show later went into syndication. Definitely worth getting for any fan of the show; newcomers might want to check out seaon 1 before deciding to buy season 2.

5 out of 5 stars Due South .......2007-03-26

I love this series! Paul Gross is wonderful, adorible and witty. I love his interactions with Diefenbaker and of course, Dief himself! As others have said, it would have been nice to have extras on the disks, but I'm just really pleased to have the entire series available to own & watch commercial-free!

5 out of 5 stars Fond memories of a great show.......2007-02-17

I bought the first two seasons of Due South on DVD to save space from all the VHS tapes I've saved since the show was on. The DVD quality is fine, picture and music both sharp. The show is fantastic and re-watching this old favorite has brought back a lot of fond memories. I stopped at the first two seasons because after David Mrciano left it wasn't Due South for me any more.

4 out of 5 stars Medium Quality Transfer, Top Quality Program........2007-05-14

As an Australian fan of this program with no hope of ever finding a Australian released version I jumped at the chance to get my hands on a copy to enjoy this fantastic program and I'll tell you right now I was not disappointed with the show in any way what so ever. I was a little disappointed in the quality of the DVD transfer. It was a little like watching a high quality video but to be honest I knew it was going to be like that and given the price compared to the Canadian version and the fact it has ALL the episodes I would buy it again if I had to. If you already have season one I can assure you it's better quality then that but not as good as you would expect from a fairly new release DVD. Be that as it may if you are a fan of the show, don't have the money to buy the Canadian version, which is separate box sets of Season 3, Season 4 and a separate copy of the double episode finale, don't mind watching a slightly lower quality version and don't mind a box cover that isn't really designed for this season (the images are of the original Ray and of episodes from season One) then get to credit card out and buy this killed before it's time program.

4 out of 5 stars Gets the job done.......2007-02-19

I have been a big fan of Due South since it first aired on television. With the U.S. version of the DVD's though, don't get your hopes up when it comes to any extras because there aren't any. The discs are about as plain as they come. So as long as you aren't expecting anything other than the show itself, you won't be disappointed. The picture quality is the same as when it first aired on television. Other than that, the DVD's came out fine, just check to make sure nothing is wrong with the discs as some of them tend to shift during shipping.

I have heard that if you can afford it, get another country's version of the sets, such as the Canadian version, because it has better picture quality and it actually has extras on the DVD's. I would have given the DVD's a five star rating had it had extras.

3 out of 5 stars Don't Disparage the Canadian Release.......2006-02-06

True, the US sets are cheaper than the Canada sets (though if you buy the canada sets from Amazon.ca, they're LOTS cheaper than buying them as imports from Amazon.com). True, the Canadian sets have difficult packaging (DVD overlay and spindles that require a lot of pressure before you can pop out the disk without risk of damage). True the first two Canadian season sets use the dreaded "flipper" (2-sided) disks. True what we saw in the US as a third season of 22 (missing four episodes, by the way) was produced and broadcast in Canada as two seasons of 13 each -- and the third and fourth DVD sets are released separately too. (Does the US "third season" set have all 26?) And most ironic truth of all: if I'd known that by waiting, I'd have gotten all three sets cheaper from an American distributor, I'd've taken that route too.

However -- the Canadian sets feature pristine transfers. (I've read that the US sets use videotape as the masters; I'm not sure where this info comes from, but it doesn't make sense that the masters would be any different than what the Alliance sets drew upon, since they license the material.) The Canadian sets feature disks running at the highest speed. (The American disks are single sided because they jam twice the normal amount of eps. per side, and run at a slower speed. That, it seems to me, would account for VHS-like resolution.) The Canadian sets, for whatever it's worth, do feature accurate packaging (the right cast members listed and featured in illustrations). And finally --

-- small thing though it may be --

-- the Caniadian Final (4th) Season set does have a small but utterly delightful extra. Paul Gross does a running commentary for both parts of CALL OF THE WILD. I can live without most commentary tracks I hear, but this is one you'll return to. It's witty, wryly funny and thoughtfully observed.

I won't tell you not to save the dough on the American release, I empathize ... I'll only tell you, the Canadian sets have more vibrant sound and video. And in the end, it's what's ON the DVD that matters the most ... isn't it?

3 out of 5 stars Four for the season, but three for the DVDs.......2006-01-16

There are two camps in the DS fandom: those who fangirl the "real" Ray from the first two seasons (played by David Marciano) and those who adore Ray Kowalski (Callum Keith Rennie) from the last season. This DVD set is the last, third season (as seen in the US, instead of broken into two seasons as it was in other countries) and depending on which camp you fall into, you'll either love it or hate it.

The DVDs themselves are only of average quality, not really what you'd expect from a professional DVD release. More like something that you'd find on VHS. There aren't any good features, either, and CKR is nowhere to be found on the box. But on the other hand, the entire third season is here. No having to buy a whole other box set just to get the last few eps.

As for the show itself, it definitely took a different turn in the last season. I thought it started taking itself less seriously in most eps (there were exceptions for character development) and with Paul Gross at the helm as both actor and producer, it took more chances. Supernatural story lines (not out of the realm of believability, considering that the ghost of Fraser's dead father has been hanging around since the first season), Fraser becoming a bit more "superhero-like" in his abilities (which I saw as tongue-in-cheek, not bad writing), and most definitely a nod to fans of slash with major subtext between Fraser and Kowalski. (Something that pleased CKR fans, but made "real" ray fans do Linda Blair _Exorcist_ impressions; major split in the fandom.)

Paul Gross put more fun in the third season and yes, the writing could get wacky, as could the acting, but they were all having fun and if you look at it from that angle, you get a good laugh out of it. The finale is probably one of the best parts (aside from the two-part "Mountie on the Bounty"). It took that wackiness to a new level with the "resolutions" of the characters (the actors got to decide how they wanted their characters to end up), and best of all (depending on your view point), Fraser and Kowalski actually do ride off into the sunset together. In a dog sled. With Stan Rogers' "Northwest Passage" playing in the background.

Sweet? Funny? Just plain bad? It's all a matter of opinion, but whichever you choose, it's not dull. Due South never failed to be exciting and surprising, and the third season was a good example.

3 out of 5 stars Three stars for content, three for video quality...and what's up with the packaging? Would the real Ray please stand up?.......2006-01-15

I found out about the domestic release of Due South on Amazon.com, and rushed out to buy all three seasons. The Canadian box sets are $80 Canadian, so buying all four seasons from Canada is an expensive proposition. The American release costs a third of that, and contains the pilot to boot, which wasn't included until the Season 3 box set in Canada.

Due South followed the misguided adventures of Benton Fraser, a constable in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, as he tracked his father's killers to Chicago. After closing the case, his Canadian superiors advised him to lie low, so he remains in Chicago as a liaison at the Canadian consulate and works cases with Ray Vecchio, Chicago cop, along with his deaf wolf Diefenbaker (named after a former Canadian Prime Minister). The Canadian/American and wilderness/city culture clash leads to some humorous moments along the way.

The picture quality is noticeably grainy since it was taken from videotape rather than the masters, but for the great price (I now have all the seasons for less than one season of the Canadian box set), it's a compromise that was worth it. Like the Canadian set, there are no extras, also no closed captioning. Menus are bare bones and include episodes and chapter menus (hardly "interactive" menus as stated on the box). The packaging is a big step from the clunky Canadian design, featuring an attractive foldout cardboard case with large photos of Ray, Benton, and Dief.

The DVDs are single sided, meaning easier handling. All 26 third season episodes are here, including the two part "Mountie on the Bounty" and two part series finale "Call of the Wild." Nicknamed "The show that would not die," Due South was resurrected from the dead for the third season, when they were already destroying sets and many of the original cast had other work. David Marciano (Ray) was replaced by Canadian tough guy Callum Keith Rennie from Hard Core Logo. Marciano's absence was explained by having him on an undercover drug bust in Mexico, and Callum was a stand-in as Ray. Paul Gross took on the triple hats of actor, director, and producer, as well as doing most of his own stunts. And the show took a much darker, gritter, sexually charged tone in its final reincarnation. Citing reading Due South slash fiction (homoerotic fan fiction), Gross included elements (real or implied, your call) of homoerotic tension between Kowalski and Fraser, more violence, explicit songs on the soundtrack, and a less family friendly tone in general. My greatest disappointment was with the series finale, in which the storylines are wrapped up in an improbable, flippant way that insulted fans of the first two seasons. Et tu, Benton?

Hardcore fans will want the third season (originally split into two seasons in the US), but the best episodes are in the first two seasons with the "real" Ray. And what's up with the packaging? All the box art shows David Marciano instead of Callum Keith Rennie--not a major gripe, but inaccurate to say the least.

It's appropriate that this extravaganza of lowbrow cinema had its premiere at the 2006 Cinevegas Film Festival, because what happens in Artie Lange's Beer League should stay in Artie Lange's Beer League. Lange is most recognizable for his stint in the Mad TV ensemble, but probably more idolized by the people who will get wild kicks from his leading man debut as the resident guest-baiter and booze/scatological/flatulence/sex joke expert on Howard Stern's radio show. Those are the same kinds of laughs this movie relies on in telling the wisp of a story about a bunch of New Jersey boneheads whose lives are fulfilled by softball games and the beer-guzzling that goes on before, during, and after. Artie's team is proud to be in the bottom ranks of their league, especially when brawls erupt at games against their slick, archrival team. Artie and the rest of his team know these arrogant jerks in their immaculate black (of course) uniforms are unbeatable, so it's only natural that Artie thinks its easier to just beat the hell out of them. The local cop who's had to deal with both teams finally gets so angry with the escalating brawls that he issues an ultimatum: Whichever team loses the season has to disband and never play on the league again. It's kind of an utterly tasteless version of The Bad News Bears for people who like their movies vulgar, offensive, misogynistic, and often really funny in spite of it all. Some of the subplots and supporting players include Ralph Macchio as one of Artie's childhood friends who's about to get married (cue depraved bachelor party scene with lots of topless babes), Mary Birdsong from Reno 911! as a kooky waitress, and a delightful turn by crusty character actor Seymour Cassel as Artie's teammate Dirt, who may be old but loves booze, fisticuffs, and debauchery as much as anyone. For some reason, Artie's foul-mouthed slobbery attracts a local Jersey girl (Cara Buono), even though he's jobless and still lives with his mom (Laurie Metcalf, who should get some kind of good sport award). The buffoonery doesn't just stop with the movie. There's also more than two hour of bonus material tailored for Artie Lange enthusiasts who probably number more than you'd think -- whether they'd ever admit it or not. --Ted Fry

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-07-05

This movie makes Porky's look sophisticated. Don't think too much and just enjoy the movie for what it is. Definitely NOT a Family movie... Unless you're in the Manson family. Artie Lange is hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than Expected.......2007-07-04

If you like Happy Gilmore, Animal House and Tommy Boy, then this is worth a watch. Don't expect a high budget movie, but there are some really good one-liners that are not given away in the trailer. I liked it so much I am even buying a copy (spent $15 bucks just to watch in a hotel).

4 out of 5 stars Lewd, crude, offensive, and downright hilarious.......2007-06-25

For the purposes of my review of Beer League, I want you to forget about Howard Stern - more to the point, don't judge your potential enjoyment of this movie based on your dislike of the infamous shock jock. I for one do not care for Stern (and I had no idea Artie Lange was ever involved with the radio show), but I pretty much loved this movie. Sure, it's tasteless and juvenile and has to rank near the top in terms of its curse words per minute average (the MPAA's R rating is based on "non-stop language" among other things), but you know what? I say this is all about boys being boys - Jersey boys being Jersey boys, to be more exact. As a proud Southerner, I'm not naturally drawn to full-fledged Yankees, but you can't help but feel a kinship with real, 100% men like Artie and his gang who concentrate on the three B's: brewskis, baseball (or softball), and babes.

You know how some guys never grow up? Well, that's Artie DeVanzo in a nutshell. He's a thirty-something, beer-guzzling, unemployed lazy slob who lives with his mother (Roseanne's Laurie Metcalf) and is still all caught up in a high school rivalry with the slick and slimy Dennis Mangenelli (Anthony DeSando). Things get especially heated between their respective softball teams. This year, the police chief has had enough of breaking up the annual fisticuffs, so he decrees that whichever team finishes behind the other one will be thrown out of the beer league. This puts Artie and his buddies at quite a disadvantage, as they really aren't very good. Artie himself likes to smoke and drink out on the field. After an 0-5 start, though, the guys decide they might need to actually practice if they want to make a miracle comeback and give themselves a chance to knock out Mangenelli's team in the championship game.

Artie Lange is pretty funny, but he could never have carried this movie on his back; luckily, the supporting cast is very funny. Johnny Trinno (Jimmy Palumbo) always made me laugh with his play-by-play of his .700-chasing at bats, Cara Buono is great as Artie's used-goods but improbably attractive girlfriend, and Ralph Macchio proves he has put his annoying Karate Kid character completely behind him as he plays Artie's best friend Maz (who, in the spirit of the Jersey beer league, postponed his wedding until the end of the season).

Beer League is clearly a guys' movie; unless your girl likes to engage in belching contests and actually understands the basics of professional baseball, she probably ain't going to like this movie one single bit. It's not like Artie is a noble hero in disguise; he's a jerk for the most part (except when compared with Mangenelli), he's offensive in just about every way possible, and he's basically everything a woman isn't looking for in a man. For us guys, though, Artie's crude gestures and words, not to mention the give-and-take and acerbic dialogue that defines this movie, are oftentimes as funny as all get out.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a few laughs.......2007-06-03

This movie is about a man who is unemployed, living at home with his mother who continues to live life to it's fullest...at least full on whiskey. Artie Lange plays a man who lives for softball, but hasn't played well in years. Now after letting his temper get the best of him as always, his team may be out of the league forever if they do not try and turn it around. Also featuring Ralph Macchio and Jimmy Palumbo, this is a pretty funny crew. The humor is relatively crude, but still make will make you laugh enough to enjoy at least viewing this once. Onother note, special features are really not that special. Rent this or borrow it, but not a buyer.

3 out of 5 stars It's Not Bad!.......2007-05-31

This movie wasn't as good as I thought it would be. But it wasn't terrible either. It's an average movie with some admittedly hilarious parts here and there. I can say that I didn't regret my purchase of this movie.

When it comes to an expressive set of lungs for horror, it's hard to match Jamie Lee Curtis, who set the standard for nonstop screaming in Halloween. She built her reputation as a scream queen in such subsequent outings as The Fog, Terror Train, and this similarly themed and relatively subpar horror outing. A progenitor of I Know What You Did Last Summer, this film focuses on four high school friends on prom night who are being stalked by a masked maniac seeking revenge for a death that occurred six years earlier. Guess who lives to tell the tale? --Marshall Fine

Product Description

Directed by Paul Lynch, this cult horror masterpiece starring Leslie Nielsen and scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis paved the way for future slasher films and inspired such blockbusters as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. For six long years, Hamilton High School seniors Kelly (Marybeth Rubins), Jude (Joy Thompson), Wendy (Eddie Benton), and Nick (Casey Stevens) have been hiding the truth of what happened to ten-year-old Robin Hammond the day her broken body was discovered near an old abandoned convent. The foursome kept secret how they taunted Robin - backed her into a corner until, frightened, she stood on a window ledge...and fell to her death. Though an accident, the then-twelve-year-olds feared they'd be held responsible and vowed never to tell. But someone else was there that day...watching. And now, that someone is ready to exact murderous revenge - on prom night.

1 out of 5 stars Disco hell.......2007-05-14

I read a startling bit of news the other day on one of the horror websites I frequent on a regular basis. According to this article, someone in Hollywood is rolling full steam ahead on a "Prom Night" remake. Oh no! What is going on out there in Tinseltown? Is there no one left with an ounce of creativity? "Prom Night"! Next thing you know, someone's going to start talking about remaking "Black Christmas". Oh wait--that already happened with absolutely devastating consequences. After finally sitting down with the original "Prom Night," I can't imagine why anyone would want to bring this one back to the silver screen. It's not good in any way, shape, or form, and it's extremely unlikely a "reimagining" (That's a new word Hollywood unloads on the anxious suckers worried about a remake that might soil an original classic--sounds better, friendlier, don't you think?) will improve upon the pedestrian qualities of the original. I've seen billions of slasher flicks, many from the heyday of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and "Prom Night" ranks as one of the worst. It's even worse than "Terror Train". Sadly, both films star scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis. No wonder she left the genre.

"Prom Night" starts off with a childhood tragedy that should never have happened. A bunch of kids playing some sort of game in an abandoned house end up killing one of their playmates. How does it happen? The kid does a header out a window and slams into the ground. Why did it happen? The four youngsters taunted the other kid so badly that in the process of trying to escape, she backed up to that window ledge. Ooops. The surviving little ones immediately make some sort of pact, a promise if you will, that no one will tell the adults exactly what took place. After all, they're afraid something bad will happen to them if they tell the truth. What they don't know, what they won't know until their teenage years some years later, is that someone saw what happened that horrible day. And that someone is silently hiding away, biding their time and plotting a nasty vengeance that will rain death and destruction down on this little town. The resulting horror will take place, of course, on PROM NIGHT! Bum, bum, bum! Oh the humanity! Oh the horror! Oh brother! I wish I'd taken the header out the window after viewing this trash!

Six years later, all the kiddie murderers are grown up and planning their prom night. We have Kelly (Marybeth Robbins), Jude (Joy Thompson), Wendy (Eddie Benton), and Nick (Casey Stevens) all going through the motions planning for the big night. Also looking forward to the big event is Kim Hammond (Curtis) and her brother Alex (Michael Tough). It was their sister who took the Nestea plunge all those years ago. It's kind of a bummer for them since their father Raymond (Leslie Nielsen) is the school principal, but you gotta do what you gotta do. As the nighttime party nears, all four of the principals involved in the accident receive a frightening phone call from some wacko who likes to tap a pencil on a pad of paper. Hmmm. The story tries to fill time by introducing us to various tensions involving getting dates for the dance, keeping a date for the dance, hooking up with a ridiculous nerd driving a van, fighting in school, and trying to undermine the prom queen (Curtis, of course). You get the idea. By the time we get to prom night, I'm ready to turn in for the evening. Nothing exciting happens in this film aside from those creepy phone calls.

Actually, that's not quite accurate. A few things of interest do occur, and it's worth mentioning them here. One, "Prom Night" is relatively sauce free. Sure, we get a neat decapitation at one point in the proceedings, but most of the kills in the movie take place in that great unknown land called "Offscreen". That's a big strike against the movie right there. Two, the movie came out in 1980, which meant that filming probably took place a year or two earlier. You know what that means: DISCO! Yep, expect to see plenty of disco dancing in this film. It's painful in the extreme. I'd rather take an axe in the head than watch interminable scenes of Jamie Lee Curtis cutting the rug with her best Travolta dance moves. Feel the energy! Feel the excitement! Why I can't I feel my legs anymore? Yuck. I'm watching the disco fever unfold and preying the psycho sets off a car bomb outside. Anything to make the pain go away. Because that's what we're dealing with in "Prom Night": severe pain from watching such an inept clunker unfurl on the screen. I didn't even care about the identity of the killer in the end. All I wanted was to see the closing credits.

Two interesting notes about "Prom Night" and then we'll call it a night. First, I think the movie is in the public domain because all sorts of inferior prints of the film are circulating out there in movie land. The copy I watched on DVD looked awful and didn't have any extras. Second, the film must have done well at the box office since Hollywood unleashed no less than three sequels on an unsuspecting public. Have I seen any of them? Nope. Would I watch them? Probably. What can I say? I'm a sucker for horror flicks. That, and I'm sure they don't have disco scenes. Looking back over my review, I say go ahead and remake this movie. It can't be any worse. They should keep the disco scenes intact, though. That way if the horror doesn't work, at least the audience will find some entertainment through laughter. One star. Avoid the original "Prom Night" at all costs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-05-14

I had this movie a long time ago but I lost it this is the best movie that I have ever seen I ahve always loved Jamie Lee Curtis she is a really good actor.

5 out of 5 stars PROM NIGHT: Everyone is preparing for the prom...If your not back by midnight you won't be coming home!!!.......2007-02-25

PROM NIGHT is a disco-classic slasher frenzy that will make you watch it over and over

5 out of 5 stars Disco,Jamie Lee Curtis and Rolling Heads..I'm There.......2007-02-10

"Prom Night" Is another of my favorite early Slashers.
I love the disco soundtrack and the whole late 70's feel of the movie. Ever since I saw Halloween I craved more Jamie lee Curtis and this gives you a healthy dose.
The plot is pretty usual but the killer wasn't predictable like a lot of slasher movies.
It's a horror/slasher classic,not much gore but still effective .
Can I say as a woman I would never take a ride from a fat boy in a VAN~!!
Jude~! what were you feelin girl?
And in the 70's and 80's slashers the jocks usually didn't have any muscles
But the girls always had big [...]. go figure. ANYWAY..buy the movie it's slasher royalty.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Series .......2007-07-03

One of the best Sci-Fi shows ever produced with non stop action and a few tongue in cheek zingers to keep you guessing. Highly recommended for any Sci-Fi fan.

3 out of 5 stars A bold experiment........2007-06-26

Starhunter was someone's attempt to create a completely new scifi series, it failed, but it was a very good try. The stories tended to be a tad dry sometimes and the acting wasn't the best. Effects were cheap and the settings tended to all look the same.
But, if you used your imagination and focused on the story ideas, it was a very entertaining show. You have mankind spread out across the solar sytem, earth is in ruins and the various planets and moons have their own soveriegn goverments. The only real law capable of moving back and forth are freelance bounty hunters and our three heroes are a bounty hunting team, working for some guy who you see give a narration at the beginning of each episode.
The show tended to be more cerebral then the average scifi fan might like, but it was a good first try. If you're a die hrad fan who is always looking for the new and unusual, like I am, you'll enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Never saw it before.......2007-06-12

But, I got it on the reviews and what I had read elsewhere. Turns out to be pretty good for a series. Some effort was put in to the visuals. The stories are a bit simplistic and the teen niece is almost too much to bear, but definitely worth the price and enjoyable on a Saturday afternoon.

4 out of 5 stars Nice transfers, nice price, but..........2007-06-02

Okay, so I'm glad there's finally a Region 1 set of the entire first series of this interesting and underrated SF series. Nice that it's on four disks instead of six individual disks in my Australian Region 4 PAL set of the same series. The NTSC set also has a crisper image transfer than the Aussie set. However, Echo Bridge Entertainment, would it have been too much trouble to actually place the episodes IN ORDER on the disks? For those of you not initiated on Starhunter yet, "The Divinity Cluster" is the first episode in the series, although it's number 4 on the first disk. View it first. It contains key points that run through the rest of the series. Why they were not transfered in order is unfathomable to me, but oh well...

4 out of 5 stars Best set we could hope for.......2007-06-01

This new set is an improvement over the old ones. They reduced the number of episodes per disc which cleared up the picture problems. It's still grainy and in full frame but I'll take it. Pick it up at this great price.

Who doesn't enjoy watching big things fall to pieces? Category 7: The End of the World wreaks havoc on the Eiffel Tower, Mt. Rushmore, the Pyramids, and a midwestern trailer park, among other things. More or less a sequel to Category 6: Day of Destruction (presumably the latest in a series that began with Category 1: Don't Forget Your Umbrella), Category 7 offers the reassuring sight of Gina Gershon, skilled with disasters like Showgirls, taking control of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Confronted with city-destroying weather, she calls in rebel meteorologist Ross Duffy (Cameron Daddo, star of such classics as Pterodactyl and Anthrax), who runs the Extreme Weather Lab and harbors theories that threaten the political status quo. Ross brings in Tommy Tornado (Randy Quaid, the sole returning actor from Category 6), Faith Clavell (Shannen Doherty, Charmed), and Col. Mike Davis (Tom Skerritt, Alien) to gather data...which isn't the most dramatic of activities (even when it involves souped-up cars and superjets), so the movie adds a subplot about a religious zealot (Nicholas Lea, The X-Files) who wants to unleash the plagues of Egypt so that everyone will realize it's the End of Days. What does it all add up to? A lot of over-the-top hooey (and that's not including the assorted family turmoils), but pretty entertaining nonetheless. It's like a lesser Michael Crichton novel: Take an inflammatory vaguely scientific premise, add two-dimensional characters, cheesy but spectacular effects, and a full-throttle if nonsensical plot, and presto! Over three hours of silly yet utterly watchable television. For added fun, drink a shot every time one character tells another "You're the most important person on the planet right now." --Bret Fetzer

Product Description

The Ultimate Superstorm is Back -- And This Time it's Deadler...The hair-raising sequel to the highly-rated TV event, "Category 6: Day of Destruction".

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A dissapointment after Category 6 ............2007-06-13

Some movie sequels out-do those that precede them, but this ain't one of them.

The saving graces of Category 7 are superb performances by Tom Skerritt and Sebastian Spence, bigger and better city-eating storms, and being given the answer to the question left dangling at the end of Category 6 (the storms do continue world-wide and the reason why is discovered and applied successfully, albeit after much silly political wrangling).

Beyond these three things, this sequel disappointed me in every other aspect. The many (*too* many) ridiculous mini-dramas were annoyingly distracting rather than adding any amount of depth to the storyline. The performances of the majority of actors cast left much to be desired. And I think that Tornado Tommy (Randy Quaid) held together much better in Category 6 ... that fantastic twister ride he took last time apparently dropped him in Oz and scrambled his brains but good. He'd have been much better off remaining happily ensconced in Munchkinland, in my opinion.

Okay, Category 7 continues the story begun in Category 6. That would be the main reason to see it and why I watched it (though I ended up impatiently sighing my way through a whole lot of stupid sub-plots waiting for the grounding appearances of Tom Skerritt and Sebastian Spence ).

Not the worst movie sequel I've ever seen, but most definitely quite far from the best.

4 out of 5 stars Category 7 End of The World.......2007-05-25

This movie is good I liked it but there is one thing wrong with it the ending is cut short the last thing that you see is the Torch of
The Statue of Liberty coming down on two people and that is it. It states to be continued where? there is nothing else that's it this is where it ends it is supposed to be part of a Mini-Series or so it states and it is supposed to be complete don't be fooled it's not complete where is the rest of it you don't just leave people hanging on waiting for the rest of it. This is a good one to have along with Category 6 I have both
but Cate 7 is not finished or is there another one to this one? Who knows?

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-02-15

Category 7 was interesting and had many good points. It holds you at the end of your seat. My only disappointment is that most of the characters from Category 6 was not in Category 7 - especially the reporter and the secretary of energy that were in Category 6.

5 out of 5 stars Have 2 of 3 in series.......2007-02-12

We own Day of Destruction, and Category 6. oth movies should make people realize accually what we are doing to earth. These storms can happen. Randy Quaid is awesome and as usuall, a great performance. Wake up world, any of these situations can happen. Watch and learn before it's to late.

4 out of 5 stars Really Cool,I Liked It!.......2007-02-03

I haven't seen any of the others in this series, butI really enjoyed this one. The special effects are awesome, and I really liked all the storylines, and the characters are well developed. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars,is because it isn't a movie that I would want to watch again, but that is because of my preferrences and so much going on,just seemed too "over the top" for me. No offensive elements here either. Definately worth a view.

Product Description

Featuring 22 Episodes! The untamed glory of the Old West as it really was returns when Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years saddles up for another season of high-spirited episodes, with a new look and an exciting cast of characters struggling to survive on the wild frontier. The year is 1880. Curtis Wells, the locale of Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years, is now a boomtown on the Montana frontier. When neighboring Sweetwater was left in ashes by a prairie fire, its whores and desperadoes took up residence in Curtis Wells, changing its character forever. Newt Call has come back to the town after living the past two years on the trail as a bounty hunter. Call is a man whose past has left its scars. Having left Curtis Wells a few nights after the explosion which killed his beloved Hannah, Call went on a downward spiral, aimless and soulless, eventually hitting bottom. Coming back to the town has reopened some of those old wounds for Call, not the least of which is his unresolved business with Clay Mosby, the man who coveted his wife before the fire took her. Mosby has made Curtis Wells his personal dominion. Behind his charming, roguish facade, he is a ruthless businessman, swift and severe with those who cross him, ready to shape the town to his own dark vision. Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years brings to life all the grit, romance and excitement of the West--an untamed world where anything is possible.

All the Lonesome Dove series, the first series to the Outlaw Years. We were addicted to them..watching two and three at a time! Wish they made more shows like this again. after watching the original lonesome dove with tommy lee jones and robert duvall the outlaw years is very poor. the acting is poor and the storylines are not much better

5 out of 5 stars Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years........2007-05-13

I have the whole collection of Lonesome Dove. In my opinion; it's an outstanding collection. I've watched the whole series from start to finish, three times. Excellent, excellent movie. I think there should be more series. The actors are great also. It's very well put together (I would change a couple of things, but I'm not a director. It's still the best movie.) I'll wait a couple of weeks, then watch them again.

5 out of 5 stars pinkgranny's review.......2007-04-11

I just loved this darker of this series. Hanah's death seemed to bring out the dark side of those who loved her. This series had a gritty, sordid look which I think was more realistic of those times.

5 out of 5 stars Bring back this show.......2006-03-24

Lonesome Dove was one of the best television series ever produced. The episodes that comprise "The Outlaw Years" feature engrossing stories about realistic people that, like a good novel, just leave you wanting more. I can highly recommend this DVD set to anyone who enjoys good storytelling. While it is not necessary to see the first part of the series, it will help you to better understand the characters' motivations on TOY. I hope someone is smart enough to bring this show back to television someday with the same production values shown in the original

3 out of 5 stars SOUNDTRACK PROBLEM BUT GREAT MOVIE.......2007-06-12

I loved this movie. When I first saw 10.5 I knew I'd want to own it, especially without the zillion commercials TV fills it with! Then I found this sequel and without seeing it I ordered it.

I love the movie! Plenty of special effects and there's always something going on. It's a long movie but well worth the time and you won't be bored if you like disaster films. So why did I rate it only 3 stars? After watching this movie my first thought was, what happened to the soundtrack! When I saw the ocean pulling back from the shore I didn't expect it to sound like a wind tunnel test done in a tin can. (this is at the beginning of the movie so I'm not giving anything away) Voices come through fine but the special effects are confusing to the mind. Your eyes see one thing and you hear something completely different.

The original 10.5 was put out by Lions Gate Films. The 10.5 Apocalypse on Amazon says the DVD is put out by Platinum Disc? but my DVD was put out by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment. I contacted them about the soundtrack and received an email today stating that they are aware of the soundtrack problem and IF they ever reissue this movie the problem will be fixed. But the DVDs they put out there are defective.

So I say 5 Stars for the movie, 3 Stars for the awful soundtrack. If the DVD you order is put out by Echo Bridge Home Entertainment, I feel you should know about the defect up front, not after you buy it. I bought it for a great price so I'm willing to live with the defective soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of action........2007-04-16

Short, sweet, and to the point.

Wall to wall action, even the filler is action...maybe a little too much action. Three and a half stars--I rounded up.

1 out of 5 stars Great movie but negative.......2007-03-11

I saw it on TV and LOVE that movie. I was so thrilled to get DVD to watch it again BUT the negative thing is there is NO CLOSED CAPTIONED or SUBTITLE for Deaf, Hearing Impaire and Hard of Hearing people. Its too sad. It isnt worth it to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-02-24

I really liked this movie. Any movies that show something wrong with the Earth I watch. It is fascinating. I sometimes wonder about the catastrophes that happen. I have been in eartquakes and hurricanes too. The one thing in the movie I have thought a lot about is, at one time was our land here on earth one big slab of dirt?

4 out of 5 stars A STORY THAT ROCKED THE NATION.......2007-07-01

As a genealogist, I collect period movies. This is one of the first movies I ordered. This story is only one of many stories that occurred during the slavery peiod in this country. Because it was Thomas Jefferson - that made it big history. There were several slave owners who not only bed their slaves, some fell in love with them. The acting is excellent and the movie is very relevant. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Just Unbelievably Awesome!!!!!!!!.......2007-03-20

I ordered this movie and it came within a just a week. I love it. I culd watch it over and over again becuz i've been searching everywhere 4 this movie dying 2 c it again; I remember the movie from when it came on CBS back in '99 or 'oo. Tina Andrews did her research well and I love the way Sally Hemings was protrayed in the film. She's beautiful (thanks to Carmen Ejogo) and intelligent as well as feirce and kind at the same time. She's quite confident of herself. I also liked the way Jefferson was portrayed. It's almost completely believable to me-it's nice 2 hav an imagination. The other acters like, Diahann C., Mario V.P., Mare W., Amelia H., and Klea S. are great as well. I wish it culd hav gone into detail about her mother's, Betty, life and her Sally's two youngest sons, Eston and Madison. If you're interested in good entertainment of or the scandal of the U.s. 3rd president, you shuld seriously consider viewing this movie. I really like it and I am sooo glad I own it.

5 out of 5 stars Sally Hemings: Excellent Story Told of Love, Betrayal and Oppression.......2007-03-08

This movie was excellent. It was much better than the version that came out in the early '90's. If you love period films than you will definitely love this historical piece. This is the perfect example of people caught between privilege and oppression. Excellent!!!

1 out of 5 stars Godawful.......2007-02-27

Just terrible. Makes claims that not even the most ardent Sally Hemings promoter believes. Turns Sally's brother James into some sort of martyr to the cause of political correctness. Has Jefferson (atrociously played by the completely out-of-place Sam Neill) traipsing around with Sally Hemings in public in a completely unrealistic way. Given the almost certain fact that Jefferson really did have children with Sally Hemings, this premise might have made an interesting and insightful movie. Instead, the producers used it as an excuse for creating a complete historical romance fantasy that tries at the same time to be titillating and preachy, and maybe it succeeds--but at the cost of any degree of historical accuracy. If you want a movie about Jefferson, get the much less awful Jefferson in Paris, which at least has beautiful production values and nice music.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT LOVE STORY!!!.......2007-01-09

I bought this dvd as a gift for my mother and she loves this movie. If you love romantic love stories, this is a good buy to witness a great love affair that happened between President Jefferson and Sally Hemings. I have seen this movie more than once; and everytime it is a joy to watch.
