Thomas, as anyone familiar with the eponymous, wildly popular TV series knows, is a very useful engine, and never more so than in his first theatrical release, which was a modest box-office success. On a tank filled with little more than pluck, determination, and goodwill, Thomas sets out full steam ahead on a danger-fraught mission to help his friend Mr. Conductor. The conductor's stash of magic gold dust has run out, leaving him stranded on the Island of Sodor with Junior, his flaky cousin, and Lily, a little girl enlisted to lift her grandfather out of a funk on nearby Muffle Mountain. When Thomas bravely chugs beyond his hometown tracks' buffers with Lily aboard, he's transported to Muffle Mountain's secret railway and to Lady, a long-lost steamer whose legendary engine makes her more powerful than Diesel, the train-yard bully. Together, Thomas and Lady lead Diesel on a chase that causes a bridge to collapse, taking the dastardly Diesel down with it. Most impressive about the movie is its marquee names: Alec Baldwin works magic as the dutiful worrywart Mr. Conductor, Mara Wilson is Lily, and Peter Fonda plays the cool-looking but lugubrious Grandpa. It's a cast that'll keep put-upon parents watching, if halfheartedly. Thomas fans 5 and under, meanwhile, will wish the actors wouldn't blow so much hot air; they'll want to see their hero a bigger part in steaming up the story line. --Tammy La Gorce

My grandson absolutely loves this movie. "TT" as he calls Thomas has wonderful stories, and this is definitely one of them. I love the fact that they have combined real people with the animation. This is definitely one of our favorite movies to watch again and again.

My 2 year old (who loves Thomas) doesn't have the patience for this VERY silly and poorly acted, directed, and written movie. The plot makes no sense for a movie and EVEN THOUGH IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE FOR KIDS, even they deserved a movie that doesn't make the parents cringe. TRUST ME, I ENJOY KIDS MOVIES, BUT THIS IS JUST PLAIN BAD!!!

My two-year-old twins love Thomas, and they really love this movie. I enjoy the sappy music, and I don't mind having it play in the background. They've been watching the Thomas tv episodes for a while now, but they've started asking for this movie specifically, and won't be satisfied with the episodes when they want th movie.

Most of you are taking this movie way too seriously, and judging it by "artistic" standards. Give me a break. It's a Thomas the Tank Engine movie...for kids!!

Anyway, we got this DVD out of a bargain bin, and both my 8 year old and 3 year old love it. I was surprised to see a big name like Alec Baldwin in it, but hey, they didn't force him to do it. I thought he did a great job. He put a lot of effort into playing Mr. C., whereas a less talented actor would have just seemed silly. He did much with what he was given, and he deserves some credit.

The kids in the movie are extremely dull and should have been left out. Less kids, more trains. Same could be said for Peter Fonda's role.

All in all it's still a great Thomas movie. Just take it for what it is.

2 out of 5 stars Buy at Your Own Risk.......2007-03-04

Movie was not I how expected it to be. As for families this is more of a "Buy at Your Own Risk". As for me I was able to see this movie from a borrowed DVD from someone else who enjoyed it. When I stared watching Thomas on PBS I enjoyed it because it had trains all through the show which reminded me of my LEGO trains. For this movie forget it. Thank goodness it was a short 85 minute movie as I was getting tired of it after the first half. Next time please show all Thomas stories on television where he belongs not in movie theatres!
