This smart, tautly directed thriller from Wolfgang Petersen is about the cat-and-mouse games between a Secret Service agent named Horrigan (Clint Eastwood) and the brilliant, psychopathic assassin (John Malkovich) who's itching to get the President in his cross hairs. The back-story--Horrigan is haunted by his inability to prevent John Kennedy's assassination (Eastwood is computer-generated into archival footage)--is more than a little hokey, but the plotting itself is smartly, even ingeniously, constructed. Petersen manages a viselike grip on the tension and Eastwood even gets to deliver an ever-more-timely lecture on the diminished nature of the office of President. Eastwood's as gruff and as infuriating to the by-the-book Powers That Be as ever, and Malkovich oozes delightful menace. Renee Russo capably costars as a colleague with whom Horrigan gets friendly. --David Kronke

Between his directorial duties on A Perfect World and The Bridges of Madison County, Clint Eastwood starred in this pulse-racing 1993 thriller. In the Line of Fire was directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the brilliant director of the World War II U-boat masterpiece Das Boot. Eastwood gives one of his best performances as Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, who still feels responsible for the death of JFK 30 years earlier. Horrigan gets a shot at redemption when challenged by a psychotic but highly intelligent assassin (John Malkovich) who intends to kill the current U.S. president. Tension builds as this intellectual cat-and-mouse game reaches its climactic confrontation, but not before we've seen the killer at work, covering his trail with ruthless precision. Tightly scripted by Jeff Maguire, the film cuts Malkovich loose as one of the most memorable screen villains of the 1990s, and costars Rene Russo as Eastwood's sharp Secret Service colleague and romantic partner. --Jeff Shannon

    4 out of 5 stars A Star Combination.......2007-05-24

Eastwood plays Horrigan a veteran secret service agent, who is trying to stop an ex-cia hitman from killing the President.
John Malkovich plays the assassin and steals the film from Eastwood (and believe me Eastwood is very good).

There are a number of brilliant scenes where Eastwood and Malkovich talk over the phone, playing games of cat and mouse with each other. Credit for these must go to the screenplay by Jeff Maguire, but Wolfgang Peterson's direction is very good as well.
This film will grab you from the first scene to the last and certainly holds up well for repeated viewings. Very entertaining indeed!

3 out of 5 stars Good movie with excellent acting.......2007-01-13

Clint Eastwood and John Malkovich are at their very bests in this spell-binding and original thriller. Eastwood, in a role not far removed from his "Dirty Harry", plays a veteran U.S. Secret Service Agent who is constantly haunted by his failure to prevent the assassination of Present Kennedy 30 years ago. However, Eastwood gets a shot at redemption when a mysterious stranger sets his sights on assassinating the current president. John Malkovich is terrific as the killer: a master of deception who thrives on mind-games and doing more psychological than physical harm to our hero. Plenty of twists and surprises, superb acting and a great script makes In The Line of Fire a fine chapter in the legendary career of Clint Eastwood.

5 out of 5 stars What if you had a second chance?.......2006-12-01

Without hesitation, this film has been one the best achieved ones of the decade; not only because the formidable directorial accuracy (the best film of Petersen after his masterpiece Das Boot) ; there also other highlights such the towering performance of Eastwood as the agent who failed to protect JFK thirty years ago and the breathtaking acting of John Malkovich as the killer, the script is sharp and incisive and explores the undermined conscious filled of a strong sense of missed responsibility at the moment to avoid the inevitable murder in 1963. So in this brilliant thriller we assist once to a cat and mouse game in which one of them will have to fail in order to redeem himself or fail again.

Tense, absorbing and well made thriller.

    2 out of 5 stars Sort of "Ho-hum".... I was expecting more........2006-11-20

This movie certainly had some strong actors and actresses in it and that with an interesting storyline landed it on my viewing list.

Overall, I was somewhat disappointed with this film. I figured there would be a little more real suspense or "thrill" but it never materialized and instead just followed many of the usual plot events. The biggest failure was the completely unneccessary cheesey romance between Eastwood and Russo. It was contrived, lame, and almost laughable. I had to rub my eyes to make sure I wasnt having a nightmare!

John Malkovich does a great job as the wackjob and is totally convincing in this role. Unfortunately the script didnt do him enough justice and even his character did some staple moves. Clint Eastwood was great as always but he did play his usual self. No problem here though, Clint was solid.

The film just fizzled as it went along and it started to get tiresome towards the very end. The climax was rather anti-climactic except for the shooting scene which was kind of cool although I saw it coming a mile away. There was not as much suspense as I was hoping for and the "thrill" was mostly missing.

What else can I say, watch it and make your own decision but overall I was not that impressed and the film let me down a bit after such glowing reviews.

5 out of 5 stars John Malkovich is Great........2006-09-09

Movies about presidential assassinations (whether fictional or non-fictional) are usually lame. They follow the same formula and they always end the same. I guess, technically, "In the Line of Fire" is nothing new for this kind of movie but it's got an exciting plot, awesome acting, and well basically...Despite the familar formula, it's a damn good movie. Clint Eastwood plays a Secret Service agent named Frank Horrigan, who is still haunted by the fact that he could've saved Kennedy from being assassinated had he reacted quicker. Since this incident, Frank has been reduced to a drunken under-cover Secret Service agent who longs for something meaninful to happen. It does in the form of Mitch Leary (John Malkovich, in an Oscar nominated performance). After Frank follows up on a tip that Leary may be up to something, he recieves a phone call from Leary who tells him that he is going to assassinate the Presidents. It seems doors are re-opening for Frank. As Frank and Leary begin talking to each other over the phone, while Frank and the rest of the agents descend upon the case it becomes clear that Leary is no ordinary crazy assassin. Rene Russo co-stars as Lilly Raines, a female Secret Service agent and the love interest of Frank. Dylan McDermott also co-stars as Frank's partner Al. Anyway, the plot is good...It has its moments of predictability, but I actually must admit that Leary's decision at the end genuinely surprised me. Anyway, I don't watch many Eastwood movies (I've only seen some movies he's directed, Any Which Way You Can, Escape from Alcatraz, and that's about it); I think, in all, I've seen 5 movies he's acted in. But I can honestly say that this is, probably, one of his strongest performances. Malkovich is what made me want to see this movie, the man is an amazing actor folks. Every film I've seen him in, he fascinates the viewer. Here, the casting doesn't get much better for his role. I can't think of another actor who could play Leary as well as Malkovich. I'm not sure if it was Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive) or Martin Landau (Ed Wood) he lost the Oscar to, but this is a completely Oscar worthy performance here. Russo is good (she has the strong look of a career woman, but can be vulnerable to Franks "charm."), as is the rest of the cast.
But, Eastwood and Malkovich are the core of this film. Out of all the films I've seen by director Wolfgang Petersen (I've only seen The Perfect Storm and Poseidon), this is definitely his best.

    "The Everlasting Secret Family"

    Disturbing but Well Made

    Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"The Everlasting Secret Family" (Ariztical) is a very distiurbing but well made film. One the reasons that it is so disturbing is because it is based on the life of a prominent Australian politician, Rich in dramatic conflict and loaded with sexual nuance, it is a provocative film. The subject matter deals with a youth who is inducted into an all pervasive secret society whose members include high ranking and powerful men in Australia. Likewise it also confirms what some sections of society believe--this is how rich and powerful homosexuals operate. In exposing this aspect of Australian society, the film is tantalizing.
The atmosphere of the film is bucolic which makes sense of we look at the location of Canberra, the capital of Australia and its location--in the middle of nowhere. Senator Arthur Dignam (John Meilon in quite a performance) and his "peers" meet as an exclusive secret family which recruits young boys from the most select schools and uses them to pursue the decadence of their erotic desires. One young boy Paul Goddard (Mark Lee) particularly attracts Dignam and he leads him into a world of degrading behavior and thought. The Senator also takes a wife which makes Paul realize that if he loses his youth, he will also lose his position as Dugnam's favorite, a position that is particularly financially appealing to him. To assure his position with the Senator, Paul uses his energies to raise his son. After sixteen years, the son, heavily influenced by his mentor and companion accepts his own homosexuality and is initiated into the "family". The focal point of both the Senator and the son is the same man--the lover of one and the mentor of the other--or is there more?
The movie obviously had to be made to show how Australia was when homosexuality was illegal and contacts were made through the underground.
What we get is not a pretty picture. We see a society of gays involved in subversive activity, a secret homosexual society that infiltrated the upper crust of the Australian political and
class system in a subtle and silent way. The movie says a lot and Australia has ever reason to be proud of how far she has come.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful.......................2006-02-06

This Movie somehow really grabbed me. The Acting was really good and the plot was great. As funny as it may sound it had some deepness to it which really pulled me in I Highly recommend This Movie.

    2 out of 5 stars Creepy Weirdness.......2005-05-17

This film is dated in every way, and creepy beyond explanation.

It depicts a supposed culture of older, aristocratic men who can afford to "keep" younger men as lovers in a possessive, manipulative way. It isn't love or attraction as much as it seems to be simple lust and convenience.

The creepy weirdness increases when some of the characters decide they are "entitled" to interludes with some of the boys because they have been good servants for so many years. The mother is creepy too and does her best to manipulate the situation to her advantage, as does the main character.

So, this is an artificially artsy-feeling movie full of scheming scoundrels looking for a good time at someone else's expense. It doesn't get better at the end.

This must have been ground-breaking for it's time, and it's interesting enough to watch through, but it's value (and it's drawbacks) is in it's age and it's (probably) accurate depiction of prevailing attitudes and stereotypes of several decades ago. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except the die-hard fan of gay movies.

2 out of 5 stars Dated film that shows its age.......2005-03-10

Don't be fooled by the 2004 DVD release date. This movie was made in the 1960s and has primitive film coloring and a horrid sound track that grates.

The acting is competent though not inspired, which earns the movie two stars rather than one, and there were a few interesting and entertaining devices. One can imagine how daring this must have been for the period in which it was released. The plot, which is most unusual, earns some credit by its originality, at least among movies, if not books.

However, overall the film takes a sordid, bleak and depressing view of the subject matter, which is typical of older films. The politician is portrayed as snobbish, cold, controlling, humorless and unlikable. The youth, who is supposed to be sixteen, can't be a day younger than thirty. The courtship (mentioned above in the movie description) does not exist, as the young man is simply plucked out of a classroom with no explanation. The movie description would have you believe this film is somehow deeper, sensitive or more intelligent than it actually is.

At best, this film is a crude rip-off of "Dorian Gray". At worst, it's an indulgence of the grossest stereotypes from yesteryear.

This was probably judged a fair film for the genre back when it was one of a very few, but nowadays there are so many other, better films available, that I cannot imagine any reason for bothering with this one, other than nostalgia, which probably is the excuse for the positive reviews you read here.

3 out of 5 stars Not a complete movie! Some deleted scenes as always :(.......2004-12-07

Why am I surprised? In these days is easy to find some movies with deleted scenes. I don't want to buy or watch movies without the original content. It is like take a look at half of Mona Lisa, don't you think? Why this studios not release the whole movie? :(

1 out of 5 stars Secret Games 3.......2002-07-06

This so-called unrated version should be rated PG. I have the version taped from cinemax, and it is much better. I bought this DVD thinking it was that version. Boy, was I wrong. If you want hot & steamy, don't buy this one. It's not even luke warm.

5 out of 5 stars Be careful, buyers.......2000-10-06

I have seen both the rated and unrated versions of this movie. All I can say is the rated version is a rip off. The unrated version features a 5 min long love scene featuring Branda Swanson in the sex club, but the rated one only has a 40 sec long love scene. There are other cuts on these critical moments.

2 out of 5 stars Secret games 3.......2000-02-13

The so called NR dvd you see above in not NR. If the racey seen were left intact, as in the true NR version, this movie is hot as it were intended by the producers. This R rated version is like watching an R rated version of a XXX movie. Totally worthless

      3 out of 5 stars action.......1999-12-22

This movie is about a wife who wants some good action. She becomes a whore and becomes the obsession of one man. Rochelle Swanson is hot. Doesn't have much variety in formations though. Good looking chick. Could have thought out the sex scenes better.

      5 out of 5 stars Great movie........1999-08-30

This was a great movie but it should have had a more protective rating. R is not strict enough. It should have be NC-17 or higher because this was a great pornographic film.

The digital video disc offers standard and widescreen formats. --Jeff Shannon

      4 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2006-09-06

Review Clarification: This review is based on my viewing of this movie in the theater, and on Laser Disc. I have not viewed the DVD (any version).

This is my favorite Clint Eastwood movie of all time, better than all the Dirty Harry, Spaghetti Western, and Sci-Fi/Space movies.

I first viewed this movie in the theater, and I was completely blown away. I am disappointed that John Malkovich has chosen not to be in more mainstream movies, because I immediately wanted to see everything he was in, after watching this movie. (I immediately rented "Being John Malkovich" when it became available, and was quite disappointed when he was not the protagonist.) John plays a brilliant Psycho in this movie, and plays it very well. In fact, I actually changed my image of him after this movie. If I were to see him on the street, this is the only memory I would have of him.

I recommend this movie highly. One of my favorites.

Line of fire alone is worth buying this box for. Eastwood s great in just about all his movies and this is no exception.

This boxset offers good value for money, the titles all transfer to DVD well enough wihtout being spectacular, and if you like these titles you could do a lot worse than buy this boxset off Amazon.ocm

Like a high-tech version of the Christian apocalypse tale Left Behind with a skeptical skew, Gordon Chan's Armageddon (not to be confused with the Bruce Willis giant asteroid adventure of the same name) haphazardly combines end-of-the-world prophecies from various faiths with a murky X-Files-like mystery. The world's greatest scientists spontaneously combust after receiving a cryptic note ("You Have No Choice"), and communications genius Andy Lau (Savior of the Soul) is roused from mourning the death of his fiancée to investigate. Anthony Wong (Hard-Boiled) costars as his buddy and bodyguard, a shaggy, sloppy street cop out of place in the high-tech environment, and Michelle Reis (Fong Sai Yuk) is the dead girlfriend who steps out of his flashbacks and into his life, like a ghost providing him with clues. The darkly handsome film is more tech noir than action thriller, with a spiritual undercurrent, a serious tone, and a slow, moody buildup. Chan breathes some excitement into the otherwise somber film with some intriguing effects and a striking climax, but he never really clears up the cryptic mystery. Still, he got the jump on Hollywood. Produced and released in 1997, when the fear of Hong Kong's return to China was investing everything from gangster movies to costume epics with a rumbling, paranoid sense of confusion, his millennial thriller is at least as interesting as the U.S. attempts that followed (End of Days, Stigmata, Lost Souls) and certainly more fun. --Sean Axmaker

I saw this in the theatre in 1997 and thought it ruled. Andy Lau was brill as the scientist, Anthony Wong is always fantastic, and it was a great supernatural thriller, which is a genre you don't see so much of in HK films. I really enjoyed it completely and I have no idea why anyone else dislikes it--perhaps it's just not what they expect from an HK film? But if you like things like Twin Peaks, Supernatural, Profit, Hex, Existenz, or The Matrix I think you will enjoy this movie!

2 out of 5 stars Why am I watching this???.......2005-01-09

Terrible ending to this apocalyptic sci-fi thriller. Andy Lau (in his umpteenth lead role) plays a scientist and head of a telecommunications MNC whose girlfriend (Michelle Reis) has just died, and then gets involved in an international cult that believes the end of the world is nigh. With a cop friend (Anthony Wong) he got tracked down by the Caucasian cult leader who wants to ordain him (?). At the end the director and writers probably run out of ideas, or funds, or both. Whatever good the film does in the first one hour is undone by the abysmal end. You'll be a saint not to throw things at your television set. Pretty boy Andy gets to decide the fate of the world? Gimme a break! Is this the end of the world or what?

1 out of 5 stars Blah blah, rent the "Returner" instead........2004-02-24

This is a supernatural "thriller" about a mysterious cult that is murdering famous scientists (why?) by spontanteous combustion. Our hero, played by the talented Andy Lau, is a scientist on the list who has police protection forced on him, but will only accept his old friend the cop, played well by the accomplished Anthony Wong, as a bodyguard. Things get weird as Andy's dead fiancee starts appearing to him and everyone else and soon it becomes clear as the cult invites him into their inner sanctum, that God is pissed and everything falls to Andy making a decision.
Despite competent direction and good acting all around, this just drags on, makes no sense in many places, and has a ridiculous sappy ending that will make just about anyone cringe. The few positive moments are all in snappy banter between the two friends and virtually no action exists here. Unless you can't resist the re-united beyond the grave love story thing, avoid this one.

      2 out of 5 stars Oh, what a mess.......2000-05-11

Andy Lau is the scientist. Anthony Wong is his buddy, the cop assigned to protect him when leading scientists start getting knocked off in some unusual ways. Oh, and there's a dead wife coming back here and there to torment Andy.Actually, this film held my attention for about the first 45 minutes. It seems to be headed in some neat, techno occult direction, but . . . well, this one falls apart and it's not pretty. One last question: how come all the worst Caucasian actors are in Hong Kong? I think some L.A. waiters should buy a plane ticket and try their luck.

5 out of 5 stars SHOULD BE 1998 NOT 1989.......1999-10-17

Andy Lau's is a super star and idle for whole Chinese communities. He published a lot of films and songs for over 17 years. He done much charity works and gained more awards.
