Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra star in this visually stunning metaphysical tale of life after death. Neurologist Chris and artist Annie had the perfect life until they lost their children in an auto accident; they're just starting to recover when Chris meets an untimely death himself. He's met by a messenger named Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and taken to his own personal afterlife--a freshly drawn world reminiscent of Annie's own artwork, still dripping and wet with paint. Meanwhile a depressed Annie takes her own life, compelling Chris to traverse heaven and hell to save Annie from an eternity of despair.

The multitextured visuals seem to have been created from a lost fairy tale. Heaven recalls the landscape paintings of Thomas Cole and Renaissance architecture complete with floating cherubs, while hell is a massive shipwreck, an upside-down cathedral overgrown with thorns and a sea of groaning faces popping out of the ground (one of those faces is German director Werner Herzog). Williams is the perfect actor to play against the imaginative computer-generated imagery--he himself is a human special effect. But the lack of chemistry between Williams and Sciorra is painfully apparent, and the flashback plot structure flattens the story's impact despite its deeply felt examinations of the heart and the spirit. Still, there's no denying Eugenio Zanetti's triumphant production design and the Oscar-winning special effects, which create a fully formed universe that is at once beautiful, eerie, and a unique example of movie magic. --Shannon Gee

1 out of 5 stars flat, unoriginal, and over-done.......2007-06-13

This is pretty bad: a guy dies and lives on in some bizarre afterworld, where he rights certain wrongs and gets an idiotically sentimental philosophical perspective on his life and love. Then, of course, he takes a dare and changes the destiny of his great love, etc.

The film totally failed to sweep me into some believable fastasy, but just came off as pretentious and emotionally flaccid. It is a total bore and there is nothing new whatsoever.

It seems that this is not a general opinion, given the other reviews, but this is how I saw iy and I cannot change that if I want to be honest. Not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Films ever made!.......2007-06-04

This film opens the mind and heart to explore life after death and the very meaning of love. It is totally out of the box and is like nothing else that has been done about life after death. The messages are there and so is the love. This is a film that should be seen at least once - perhaps, several times. It has some worthy issues to think about and may be an enlightening resource to some people.

Robin Williams is at his best with a great script and wonderful and inspiring filming!

While it doesn't hold together as a three-hour TV drama, Dreamkeeper should prove enthralling to anyone interested in Native American myths and legends. A variety of tribal folklore provides the episodic thrust of this typical Hallmark production, which relies too heavily on digital effects--and the plodding direction of Hallmark regular Steve Barron--in telling the story of a resentful Lakota teenager (Eddie Spears) who reluctantly agrees to drive his wise old grandfather (August Schellenberg) from their South Dakota "rez" to an All-Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along the way, the tradition-bound elder serves as tribal "dreamkeeper" for his initially resistant grandson, who gradually realizes that his grandfather's stories--visualized through effects-laden reenactments involving all manner of magic and mystery--are essential in preserving the fading cultures of the Lakota and the several other tribes whose folklore depends on unbroken generations of oral tradition. While some of the lavishly dramatized tales can stand alone as authentic Native American myth-making, Dreamkeeper lacks the overall structure that could've given the stories a cumulative magical impact. Still, it's an admirable attempt to introduce neglected cultures into the television mainstream. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

A century old storyteller and his grandson, a troubled 17 year old boy embarks on a cross country journey toward self-discovery. Like Old Pete's wise tales themselves, Dreamkeeper is important and illuminating storytelling for the entire family.

    5 out of 5 stars Dream Keeper.......2007-06-01

We love this movie. We had it on VHS, we had taped it off of the TV. The tape has been watched so many times, it was beginning to wear out. I decided to look for it online. You don't know how happy we were when I found it. Thank you so much!

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-30

The Amazon.com reviewer didn't give this movie the credit that it deserves!

This is one of my favorite films about Native Americans. It features well known Native American actors such as August Schellenberg, Floyd Red Crow Westerman and Tantoo Cardinal, among others. I've watched the DVD too many times to count. If you're interested in Native American culture, then you'll find that this production is a real treat.

    5 out of 5 stars So moving!.......2007-05-30

This is a remarkable film/study of the great lore and legends of the Native American Nations.
The special effects were magical! As a white person, I feel privileged to have been allowed to peek through the veil which has protected the privacy of the Lakota People' s legends. It was as if I had been personally invited to learn about the "Mysteries".

It was moving to watch the relationship between Grand'Pa and Shane take on a new dimension, which ultimately put Shane back on the "Red Road". The Native American family has something very special: a long, long history to draw upon.

Loved the film as well the added bonus of having the Sound Track CD, which I play over and over.
    A "must see" and a "keeper"....Well done!

    5 out of 5 stars legends.......2007-05-13

A great movie. Plenty of action and humor. An honest story with plenty of moral values of the people. A good insight into the Indian explanation of life. Very authentic.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, lets have more dreamkeepers.......2007-04-30

When the movie starts, one may think that got a wrong movie. But, if one be aptient enough, emotions will get its place. I smiled and cried many times.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Most Courageous film ever........2007-06-11

American people should be proud of this film, the courage of showing such a disgusting subject and not only the courage of producers, but the actors and the director are equally courageous. Why I said that American people should be proud of this film, unfortunately United States are the greatest producer of pornography and all kind of pornography of the whole world, in Miami for example white americans get men from Africa and countries like Cuba and put them to make sex with "barely legal white american girls" creating tons and tons of sexual sites that are a direct offense to American families and to American history, someone should do something immediately, maybe CIA or FBI, someone, so this film is an alert to American people of what's been happening nowadays, thank you Nicolas Cage, sometimes is necessary to show things even when it is not what we want to see. It is necessary to recover the moral values of the founding fathers.

    4 out of 5 stars Dark film.......2007-05-05

An interesting choice for Nicolas Cage, but he and Joaquin Phoenix are great in this film. A little disturbing, a great but twisted plot.

    5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Film.......2007-03-14

Once you get past the nagging and uninspired performance of Catherine Keener, You will find this to be an outstanding and often times very uncomfortable (in a good way) film. With the exception of Keener, great performances abound....Including Cage, who in my opinion has never returned to the form he displayed in "Leaving Las Vegas"...This movie being the exception. Joaquin Phoenix, however, is the real standout. Great performance. James Gandolfinni is completely unlikeable, but being the villan, that is a good thing. Great story, beautifully shot and completely engrossing. You cannot lose with this film. This is great filmaking !!! 5 Stars.

5 out of 5 stars You will not be disappointed........2007-03-10

A dark, gritty view of the darkside of our humanity and sexual interests.
Nicolas Cage portrays an average family man who, by his job as a private eye, is thrust into a sinister world of sexual depravity. Deeply moving, emotional, frightening, and almost too real.

5 out of 5 stars This is NOT your Everyday Creep Fest!.......2006-11-05

This movie actually takes you like it or not to a completely different world and I don't mean by use of a Star Ship or matter energy transporter. No the strange new worlds one experiences watching this movie are found right here on Earth in the seedy sides of town. OFTEN SOME rich powerful men by day have GIGANTIC strange even perverse sexual appitites by night for treats both subtle and gross. As we know in the United States wherever there is money waiting their is no need so twisted, saddistic and sick that some willing hard up enterprising soul won't make it his personal business of satisfy fully completely and often.

Men of wealth with perverse sexual needs and those who satisfy them is the core of the story. 8MM is a peek into a world of, rich powerful men with saddistic sexual needs that appear to know no boundries at all. 8MM also highlights in great detail the things done by those thuggish brutish men who make it their life's work to satisfy their clients most craven evil ruthlessly profligate dispicable passions. How the movie unfolds I won't share here but trust me this is an action adventure movie with a truly sick and twisted plot. 8MM brings to the surface some of the gruesome horror lurking in deep shadows of some alternative sexual lifestyles. 8MM will imprint itself on your mind because, a visit to the world it reveals is not one easily forgotten at least by me and I loved watching it.

A note this movie is diffinately not family viewing. 8MM is not even for the faint of heart from polite society. I am warning you that while still VERY MUCH Hollywood this film does a pretty good job of being real in ways that could way too easily gag a maggot!

This thoroughly unpleasant thriller from the hands of Joel Schumacher (Batman and Robin) offers very little in its lurid tour of snuff films and the seedy pornographic underworld. A wooden Nicolas Cage stars as a private detective hired by a tycoon's widow, who discovers in her dead husband's safe some 8mm footage of a young girl being sexually abused and slaughtered. Cage's job is to determine the veracity of the film and to find out the girl's identity, whether she be alive or dead. What could have been a taut, nerve-jangling thriller is instead a lumbering, overwrought but underwritten tale of vigilante justice. Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker also penned the imaginative and compelling Seven, but you wouldn't know it from this tired and monotonous script. Schumacher tries for echoes of both The Silence of the Lambs and Paul Schrader's Hardcore (which stars George C. Scott as a father trying to find his daughter in the seedy porn industry), but despite some slick camerawork, the film fails to draw the audience into either the mystery of the missing girl or Cage's supposed internal conflicts. It's not so much the unsavory subject matter as it is the sloppy and unimaginative filmmaking that makes the movie unbearable. Of the entire cast only Joaquin Phoenix, as a charismatic goth boy who works at an adult book store, comes away with a memorable performance. --Mark Englehart

    4 out of 5 stars Awesome!!.......2006-11-05

This is a very well-made movie that made me feel a lot of different emotions. Disturbing to think about "snuff" films and its great that someone made a good movie revolving around that. Nicholas Cage once again displays his talent as an amazing actor. I am really impressed by this movie and how it made me feel throughout. Unique, creative, thrilling and chilling!!!! I love it!!

3 out of 5 stars Two stars for the movie and another for Joaquin Pheonix.......2006-04-03

The main plot of the movie: a rich man dies; his wife hires Cage as a PI to see if a woman was really killed on a film she found in his safe. While the material that is dealt with in the film is disgusting, it's not why I didn't like it. I usually like Cage and think he is a great actor, but he was stiff and un-Cage like throughout the movie. He just couldn't get into the part and become his character, rather than just saying the lines. The movie moved sooo slowly, that I just wanted to skip to the end and find out what happened.

The only true treasure of the film was Joaquin Pheonix, whose role was unfortunately too short. He was the only one who seemed to hold the film together and made it worth watching. It reminded me just how good of an actor he is, even in a small part like that. Other than that, I did respect the end of the movie, which showed that anyone could be a monster, your neighbor, your friend, even someone in your family...and monsters aren't dressed like the boogeyman, but rather look like everyone else on the street.

If you have nothing to do and like Pheonix, then I recommend it. If you like Cage then don't watch it, you will be highly disappointed. The unfortunate thing is that the plot is a good idea; it just wasn't pulled off well.

3 out of 5 stars Disturbing Subject Matter.......2006-02-06

The first time I saw this movie I found it so disturbing in subject matter that I thought I would never watch it again. It is still disturbing but I don't find it as bad as the first time I saw it. The topic and what the film is based around is the underbelly society and the horrible side of human behavior in the outlaw culture of underground pornography, specifically snuff films. Snuff films are supposedly an urban legend where some one is raped and or assaulted and then killed on film. The premise revolves around a rich widow who finds a reel of film in her recently deceased husbands safe that contains what appears to be a 'Snuff Film'. She hires family man and P.I. Nicholas Cage to investigate and says she only wants to know if the film is real, who the girl was and if she is alive or if she was murdered on film. This plunges family man Cage into the scummy dark world of outlaw underground porn and the sick disgusting people that bottom feed there. And as the old saying goes and as Joaquin Phoenix warns Cage, "when you dance with the devil you don't change him, he changes you."

Good movie but definitely not for everyone and the material can be very disturbing to those who can't handle it. Katherine Keener is good as is Peter Stormare and an unforgettable villian simply known as The Machine.

5 out of 5 stars Dark Disturbing and Utterly Enthralling.......2006-01-14

It seems that whenever this movie is brought up in a discussion the general negative reaction seems to be: It was so *bad*! The entire thing was about violent porn! Who on Earth would *like* that?!?!

Well, no one. And that's the point. This movie is *not* made as a way of glamorizing violence and death so that the viewer will like it. The entire point of the movie is to show that there happens to be a very real and very ugly world out there that we happily do not or can not see on a day to day basis.

The film pulls no punches with reality even going so far as to be the only film of it;s kind in history to have a paid dominatrix as a consultant. It shows a gritty part of the porn industry that 20/20 in all of it's Oh So Shocked pompous news reports would vomit at the site of.

But don't let that turn you off. The worst of it is mostly psychological. As for violence the hardest part for me to watch was in the beginning when Cage is watching the snuff film he's asked to investigate. We see the girl's killer sock her in the face before slashing her to bits which I found hard to watch because: 1) I HATE seeing women get punched. So from a moral stand point I was offended which is a good thing. Seeing things like this serve to remind us of why it's important to hold onto our own morals and ethics which seems to be the theam of the movie. And...2) The actual "slashing to bits" is never shown at any point throughout the movie, but what we *do* see is Cage's expression when watching the film which sometimes can be more jarring than seeing the actual deed its self.

Watching this movie I'm reminded of another book I read where the author had written something along the lines of: I make a point to never turn away from torture. It seems disrespectful to turn your head away because you have the option when the person who is in pain has nothing at all. To shut of your TV because you found some of this offensive to your person seems like a cheep way out. More than anything this film serves to remind us that there are parts of you that you may not like, but exists anyway.

How you deal with them after that will determine who you are.

2 out of 5 stars Who did the music?.......2006-01-09

At best this is a bad B-movie remake of Hardcore.

But who did the music? the credits only list two peices, neither one of which apppears to be the arabic music all thru the film.

    5 out of 5 stars a good christian film.......2005-12-05

Martha Richards was in winter. Her heart was cold and unable to let go of the pain and resentment that filled it like a December blizzard. It had not always been so. When she and her husband Jed loaded their wagon, her heart was in the sunshine of summer. With their two beautiful daughters they headed west in hope of a better life. Her precious daughters died on the journey, and her heart was lost in a winter of pain. When orphaned Danny enters her life, she is unwilling to love him. Winter's grip on her heart makes her unable to love either him, her own husband, or her savior. Will the blush of spring ever touch her aching heart again? Find out by watching this beautiful touching story. While the movie is a low budget film with low production values, the story in it easily outweighs these factors.

5 out of 5 stars Movie FOR the heart.......2005-08-21

This movie was utterly stunning. We had read the story for Christmas every year, and when we found out there was a movie for it, we were amazed. Sam Hennings did a tremendous job as the father, and the mother also-OF COURSE so did the little boy!!
I couldn't help from crying over and over because the movie was so touching and plays with your emotions greatly.
It starts out as when a mother and father, now parentless because of the death of their two daughters, are given a boy to take care of around the age of seven or eight. The father begins to love the boy, but how can the mother when her two beautiful daughters are dead? Always turning cold towards the boy, the mother doesn't know how to love him....but then again...hearts can be mended in Seasons of the Heart.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story and Setting Less Than Perfect Acting.......2004-01-03

If you're looking for a good christian family movie, Seasons of the Heart is for you. It gives a beautiful yet painfully real picture of pioneer life. And it gives testament to God's healing power. This world brings death, but, God is the Life-Giver!

5 out of 5 stars This Is A Good Movie!.......2005-10-07

I watched this movie on TV and I really liked it. It is based on a true story and is about Olympic track and field athlete Wilma Rudolph who had contacted Polio when she was 4 years old and despite that went on to become an olympic gold winning athlete and this movie is an inspiration to follow ones dreams and never give up. Wilma Rudolph is played by Cicely Tyson who was wonderful and I highly recommend this movie!

4 out of 5 stars If only this were the Children of the Dust-4 hour version..........2004-10-04

I watched this mini series when it first aired and loved it! I've been hoping whoever decides to put this stuff on dvd would come to their senses and put the 4 hour mini-series on dvd, instead of this watered down version they are selling, A Good Day to Die. I have seen Children of the Dust dvds offered on ebay but they are like region 2 or 4 and won't play on US/Canada dvd players. It almost makes me want to invest in an all region dvd player!!!

4 out of 5 stars Thought about this movie since the age of 15..........2004-07-06

I first saw this movie back in 1995 when it aired on TV. I was then only 15 years old. I shrugged off hanging out with friends, doing homework, finishing my chores all for the sake of watching this... and wow, it sure was worth it. Now almost 10 years later, I found myself thinking about that movie, 'Children of the Dust'... and decided to get on the 'net and check it out. Well, I found it, though it was hard, since the name was changed. But wow! You can't imagine how happy I was to find it when I did! I'm thrilled to own the movie now, so that I can watch it when I please. Though, along with others, I too am dissapointed that they cut and edited this movie almost down to nothing. There was really no reason to do so. Too many vital scenes were cut... that's why I'm only giving this movie 4 stars instead of five.

5 out of 5 stars America the Boiling Pot.......2003-11-10

I've never seen "Children of the Dust," and purchased this video on the basis of the reviews here. The cast is strong. I follow a lifelong interest in race relations, in the roots and sources of bigotry, and in what it takes for a racially prejudiced person to gain the self-enlightenment to change his or her views. This film presents a story of 19C America that, among other things, investigates this question. The diverse characters are well drawn and the story is strong.

3 out of 5 stars Too bad it was edited down to nothing...........2002-07-23

As the four hour Children of the Dust on television, this was an exciting and poignant story. However, for the video and DVD release, it was edited down to just two hours. Too many of the important scenes were cut, and what was left made almost no sense. I want the complete movie on DVD!

      Description

You know what they say about favors never ask anyone to do something you wouldn't do yourself! Fromthe director of Mystic Pizza and Miss Congeniality comes a "funny, light-hearted comedy of errors" (LA Weekly) about a woman who learns this lesson the hard way. Starring Elizabeth McGovern (The Handmaid's Tale), Harley Jane Kozak (Parenthood), Bill Pullman (While You Were Sleeping), Brad Pitt (Thelma & Louise) and Ken Wahl ("Wiseguy"), The Favor is a "laugh-out-loud, light-hearted romp" (Boxoffice)! On the eve of her 15-year high school reunion, Kathy (Kozak) fantasizes about making love to her hunky ex-boyfriend Tom (Ken Wahl) because she never got to in high school! Now married, Kathy devises an ingenious way to sleep with Tom without cheating: sex through proxy! Begging her open-minded best friend Emily (McGovern)to seduce her old flame so she can get all the juicy details, Kathy is unprepared for the consequences when Emily falls for Tom! Suddenly it's like high school all over again as these two friends sharpen their claws over "the favor" that has gone too far!

3 out of 5 stars Agreeable, yet unremarkable romantic comedy.......2007-04-10

Harley Jane Kozak is good in her role as Kathy, a woman stuck in a good marriage to brainy dweeb Peter. Despite having a brilliant husband and two young girls, she is nonetheless unhappy because her impending class reunion is dredging up fond memories of her hunky and athletic high school flame, Tom. This mid-life crisis makes her wonder how delightfully romantic life with Tom would be now. Compounding this is her envy of her gorgeous friend Emily, a single woman who has had too many romantic encounters to recall. Kathy obsesses about Tom because they never consummated their relationship, and she simply must know his current status. Since Emily is going be traveling in Tom's vicinity, Kathy asks Emily for The Favor. This is where the trouble begins. Bill Pullman is decent as the absent-minded professor, who only has work on the brain, and Brad Pitt is uniformly fine in his supporting role as Emily's immature young paramour. Larry Miller delivers most of the film's funny lines and I can always watch the beautiful Elizabeth McGovern. Although the film is cute, it makes for little more than an amusing diversion for an hour and a half or so. This isn't a must-see movie, unless one happens to be a huge fan of one of the actors involved.

5 out of 5 stars A silly comedy that shines - thanks to its stars.......2002-05-05

Let me start by suggesting that you buy, not rent, this movie, because you might well find it too silly at first, then you'll surprise yourself with the urge to watch it over and over again. Yes, with a plot that's nothing better than a good episode of "Three's Company", the cast and crew deserved all the credits to make "The Favor" one of the most entertaining comedies reflecting various facets of love and marriage. Except for Elizabeth McGovern (who shines in almost every role given to her, especially in "Men & Women, Stories of Seduction"), other actors seemed to deliver their best performances here: Harley Jane Kozak, Bill Pullman, Larry Miller, the Orti sisters... I give this film 5 stars, one of which goes to the screenplay that's full of hilarious one-liners, so wisely interwoven with simple but thought provoking dialogues (the conversation between Bill Pullman, Harley Jane Kozak and Leigh Ann Orti in the "kitchen scene" being my favorite one).

      4 out of 5 stars Family Pleaser.......2000-08-20

This movie was "adorable". After seeing this movie and loving it, I had to take it to the rest of my family and watch thier reactions. It's a keeper. The plot is yes, a little corny and yes, a little silly. But, the cast was well positioned in thier characters. The thing that most amazed me was how sweet the artist character in this film was. Previous to my awareness of Brad Pitt, I thought he was wonderful. And after I realized it was him I had seen in this movie...I had to see it again and yes....again.

      4 out of 5 stars A Delightful Romantic Comedy.......2000-02-12

I found this movie to be one of the best romantic comedies of all time. It has an outrageously funny storyline coupled with fine performances by sexy Bill Pullman and sultry Elizabeth McGovern. A must see for any Pullman fans!
