Claustrophobic, dyspeptic and pathological, sex, lies and videotape revisits the insalubrious Freudian vertigo first visited upon the public with Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Tormented, arrrogant, self-destructive Spader made his case as Gen X's Richard Burton with this, then Crash. Unlike the Great Drunken One, however, it's Spader's feminine facial features (prominently displayed here) that gives the plot thrust it's disarming realism. Of course, Andie MacDowell kicks off proceedings in therapy, where her professional medicine man fails to get her talking about ... sex. Soderbergh is a clever lad - notice MacDowell mimicking Spader's black top and blue jeans near the close. Queasily perfect -

EXCEPT the final scene. What's up with the happy ending? I LIVED this movie and, let me assure you, there is NO happy ending to this stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Dense plotline, pretty interesting approach .......2006-11-11

This movie was very erotic without being truely graphic. It was a new approach for it's time. James Spader was very good (best actor though?), and Andie Mcdowell played the neurotic housewife well. Based in New Orleans, Mcdowell finds herself in therapy and in a loveless marriage, while her husband is confirming her suspiciouns of an affair. Then, a stranger comes to town from her husband's past and turns her life upside down. The pace is slow at times, but it pulls you through just fine. The ending was lackluster, but they had to end it somehow. If you like darker movies, with a little dark humor, then this is worth a watch for you.

I already knew Steven Soderbergh was a talented director, but I'd never seen a film that he had written. This movie, his first, is written and directed by the Oscar winner (Best Director, 'Traffic') and it's one of my favorite movies by him. I think it's better than both Traffic and Erin Brockovich. The only Soderbergh film I've seen that I like more is Out of Sight. This movie is funny, interesting, intriguing, and very entertaining. I thought there was one downside to the movie...No nudity. The whole time I was watching this movie, everytime Laura San Giacomo was onscreen I was thinking "Take off your shirt." But, I'm getting ahead of myself. The movie stars Peter Gallagher ("American Beauty") and Andie McDowell ("Michael") as a married couple John and Ann. Ann is a stay at home wife, who secretly attends therapy sessions where she confesses her relationship with John isn't much and that they don't have sex. Meanwhile, John (a lawyer) is having sex with Ann's sister Cynthia (Giacomo). At the same time, an old friend of John's named Graham (James Spader in one of his best performances) arrives at their house to stay for a few days until he gets on his feet. Ann is drawn to Graham and finds him interesting, but her opinion is changed when she finds out that Graham interviews woman and asks them personal questions about their sex lives while filming the entire thing. After hearing about this, however, Cynthia takes an interest in Graham. It's basically just one big love triangle. But, this movie is truly a fantastic and extremely interesting film. Soderbergh brings up really interesting points about everything from love to sex to marriage to impotency. The score by Cliff Martinez also helps to move the film along perfectly.

It's remarkable that this movie is more than a decade old and yet, its story is still as relevant and potent as nowadays. With a shoestring budget and with a basic premise of analysing the dynamics of a relationship between four persons, this movie captives my imagination from beginning till the end. The title itself can be misleading. Whilst from the outset, it's literally sex, lies and videotapes but without those issues, there wouldn't be the much needed honesty, transparency and communication that facilitate a satisfying resolve for all parties that are concerned. An intelligent movie indeed. Highly recommended. No extras in the DVD other than the set-ups.

The movie was good but i dont know how james spader got best actor for it..dont get me wrong he was good in it, but i guess the rest of the nomminees really sucked..i like james spader and this was one of the only things ive seen him in, besides boston legal, and the last season of the practice.. worth the money i spent on it..recommended for fans of james spader..

I bought this looking for some decently explicit lesbian movies and in many ways I found this to be quite enjoyable, a believable, well acted story line with some srong characters...

The story revolves around 2 young women one sexually experienced and confident the other shy and innocent... how they use their sexuality to manipulate men... all works well but soon things turn ugly for both... there is a fair amount of nudity and lesbian sex scenes which fit in well with the story... as usual the lighting, camera angles and distance from the subject make it a little less graphic than it could have been... all in all it was enjoyable.

The anthropologist Jules Henry once wrote that "men compete for power; women compete for men." Okay, it's kind of simple minded, but this movie neatly illustrates the point Henry was trying to make. Two women, Sandrine and Nathalie, meet by accident and begin an affair. Nathalie, the older and more experienced of the two, teaches Sandrine how to seduce her way up the corporate ladder, including instructions on how to improve your fake orgasms. Treat them nice and then dump them for someone better, but do it subtly.

The first guy at this huge corporation is nothing more than target practice for Sandrine. She works through him to get at the next guy in the bigger office, a happily married winsome man with a face that has all the sympathetic appeal of road kill. Sandrine, following Nathalie's instructions, works overtime at the office and spurns all hits until one night she allows the 47-year-old boss in the bigger office to catch her in a do-it-yourself mode. The older man, Delacroix, whom I'd supposed to be dead since 1863, begins a passionate affair with the delectable young Sandrine. She teases and taunts him and makes him feel vigorous again. He can't do without her. Then after tricking him into visiting her unannounced at her home, she lets him wander in on her and Nathalie while they are making love. Only in a French movie would his first question be, "Are you in love with her"? No bothering with the fact that he's just surprised two lesbians at work in front of him. That is what we blue-blooded church-goers call "sang-froid." Anyway -- skipping some additional steps -- Sandrine finally makes it into the office of the boss's son, a young rich hunk, Christophe. The real boss doesn't count because he's old and moribund. (He's my age.) But now our story turns a bit and begins to get REALLY creepy.

It develops that Nathalie has having an affair with Christophe and has been spying for him too. And this Christophe is a match for the two plotting women, believe me. "Me, cruel? Am I more cruel than God or creation?" What a cold blooded cad. Or cod. Let's see. The film turns into what could have been a soft-core porn film from any country except that in France they do it to an oratorio by Handel. We have ordinary intercourse, but not much of that. Then there's the lesbian affair of course. And, let me think, oh yes, incest and orgies. Christophe winds up marrying Sandrine and as a special treat on their wedding night he has her dragged screaming down to a dungeon and gang banged by a bunch of strangers. All this to the tune of Bach's Missa Solemnis or something and the reassuring sight of softly billowing scarlet curtains. When Nathalie finally plugs Christophe (seven times) he begs her not to commit suicide because then she will follow him to hell and harass him for eternity. When Christophe dies on the staircase his body is enshrouded by white smoke and a hawk lands on his chest and begins tearing at the bullet holes around his heart. Don't ask.

Well, Nathalie doesn't kill herself. She goes to prison for seven years, marries her prison guard, and has a family with him. Sandrine, having lost her husband, inherits everything he had, meaning their vast estate and the huge corporation. She runs the business with the now-chastened Delacroix as her loyal assistant.

I'm not trying to hack the movie to pieces, although I have made fun of some of it. I found myself genuinely interested in where it was going -- in where it could POSSIBLY go next. And I was sincerely happy that both women wound up evidently satisfied with their secure circumstances. And I appreciated the way Sandrine presented herself. She's attractive without being beautiful. And she has a way of grooming herself and walking and posturing that makes the most of what the Intelligent Designer has given her, a trait more commonly found in Europeans than Americans, if I may make such an Olympian generalization. The story, and some of the scenes, are pretty erotic but they're done with style. There's little nudity and what there is of it isn't vulgar. I kind of liked the whole thing.

with but a couple of glaring exceptions, the dialogue was generally free from the oh so predictible narcissisic franco prattle. the story was done reasonably well, and the physical beauty of the femmes kept this viewers interest. the modern no nonsense wife liked it too.

The movie was O.K. It's about two women and how they try to get to the corperate ladder. A couple of good sex seens, but nothing grafic. It's all in french, with english subtitles.

Got this movie with my sorority sister at a grocery store on sale for 2 movies for $10. The plots not that great and the acting isn't that great, but we enjoyed the flick. We made our entire sorority watch it. Its more like soft-core porn than anyhting else. There was a sex scene every 10 minutes, including my persnal favorite, rub a dub dub. Run time is really about 55 minutes with 35 minutes of credit.

If you are looking for something different then this video might suit you. It is a little slow at first the but the sex and its intensity pick up at the end. The women are not top shelf but attractive. I would imagine there is better French soft core out there.

There is a fair share of solid erotica to be found on this unrated version, with particular note going to a single but tantilizing sequence in a movie theater with porn star Tatiana, and two very stimulating scenes involving video vixen Jacqueline Lovell. The story is sometimes humorous, always cheesy, and if not for the DVD packaging I might actually have given this film a better rating. Now for the incredible negatives on this DVD package. There is no menu. I mean, there is no menu! No scene selection, no promotional features, nothing. The DVD starts immediately with two previews then follows the feature presentation as if it was being shown on VHS. The picture quality is fine, and the sound is passable, but to have to watch the film from beginning to end in one sitting is ridiculous! What if I can't watch the whole thing at once? There is no scene selection, so by the time I want to view the DVD again, picking up where I left off, I will have to fast forward through the previews and on through the film until I find the last scene I saw. What if I want to watch a particular scene again? I would have to fast forward to get there. Oh, but that's not all! In this unrated version, whenever an uncut scene unfolds a subtitle appears at the bottom of the screen that reads: "For Screening Purposes Only." It stays there for the duration of the scene. Not only is this distracting from the torrid action, the words are so large that they often obscure parts I would like to see in full. The film itself is fine with some scorching sequences worthy of every man's full attention, but the packaging is completely undesirable. Don't pick up this edition...unless you love to fast forward. This DVD is ridiculous!

Do you remember the movie back in 1989, "The Turn On," when a mad scientist uses a special remote control to turn on women? I'm sure some of you remember. After eleven years later another sequal came out called, "The Ultimate Attraction."

"Sex, Lies, and Politics" is the third installation of "The Turn On." This story involves money, power, seduction, and a man named "Ron Slick" who loves to use the remote control on beautiful women when they least expect it, such as Congress Woman during her conference, a sexy reporter during a newscast, and so on so on.

I'll give it three stars for the effort. There are total of 6 installations of "The Turn On." Well, three down and three more to go. It took a long time for each movie to come out. By the time the last one becomes available, a decade will pass, and we'll all be ten years older.

      Cesc Gay directed this Spanish film, "In the City" in which he holds nothing back as the looks deeply into the lives of his characters. The lives bounce off of each other and great intensity is shown in this film. Here is a study of middle-class life in Barcelona.
      Tomas is a recently divorced college professor who we first see in bed with one of his students. The girl seems to be mature and understands well that she is having an affair with an older man but all is not what we suspect. As we meet the other characters we see how the lives are all enmeshed.
      Mario is an architect and Sara is an actress. When she begins acting strangely, Mario discovers that she has been having an affair with an actor in a play for which she has been rehearsing. Monica, a media worker, meets Ana, a successful photographer, by accident. Monica's marriage has been rocky of late and her friendship with Ana appears to be a diversion for her. Sofia is a lonely woman who is alone having watch life pass her by. Because of her loneliness she is led to lie about her love life. She tells her friends that she has been having an affair when in reality nothing has happened.
      What we are witness to are the secrets and lies of a group of people in their thirties. Even the characters spend a great deal of time together; their lives are plagued with feelings of isolation. They speak a lot but do not communicate. There are a lot of characters and the problems are unfortunately not very interesting and nothing is resolved.
      The plot never really gets off of the ground but Maria Pujalte's performance is a standout. She exquisitely captures the habit of going after the unattainable and men do not respect her. She does not accept attention fro a sensitive and real man and feels he is not up to her level. Instead she prefers to deal with what she cannot achieve.
      The movie has its ups and downs and is basically a voyeuristic look at a very strange cast of characters whose relationships are tenable to say the least. Nevertheless, with all this said, it is interesting to watch even if it is unfulfilling.

      2 out of 5 stars Mild and laid-back movie about Barcelona couples.......2005-06-12

      A laid-back, very relaxed, subdued movie, never jolting or over-dramatic. Maybe TOO relaxed. Not the worst choice of a movie for a rainy day, though best accompanied by a bottle of wine or, if you prefer, some other central nervous system depressant. Unfortunately, I consumed coffee. Instead of the MPAA rating, movies should just tell you what to eat and drink before watching.

      Not much of moment really happens other than the indiscretions of several couples. I lost interest after an hour, but the thing just kept going on and on. A friend found it mildly interesting, so I listened off and on in the background, but nothing drew me back in. A yawner. No sexual/erotic/romantic fireworks.
