This film help break the barrier for Mexican cinema........2006-06-10

Came across this film just the other night and thought I give this one a try. "Dreaming of you," was humorous. Sexual coming of age films have a very narrow road to success in my book. They have to be believable without being explicit. This film has a great approach. Most foreign language films have a different point of view from the typical "Hollywood" film. Yet I found this film surprisingly "Hollywood" in its style but then again Mexican cinema has come along way referred by the previous reviewers. Mexican Cinema was under appreciated for such a long time and its lately getting the credit it so deserves. Check out its most recent film.

The director, Marisa Sistach, takes a good story by Jose Buil and Alfonso Reyes and keeps the pace moving, while getting solid performances out of the talented cast. Played as a comedy, the performances are never over the top. Well, Moises Ivan Mnora (Quique) pushes the envelope, but it is a good counter to Martin Altomaro's performance as Toto. Perhaps a little too low keys for your typical fourteen or fifteen year boy, Altomaro's performance makes the film work. His role has to be believable or the film will fail.

The sexual scene is done in the traditional compositing, long dissolves to reduce the explicitness while still retaining the intimacy. What is surprising to me is that you can do this type of scene with a male actor who is clearly under the age of eighteen. I doubt that you could have filmed this in the USA, not that it is exploitative. Leticia Perdigon and Altomare, however, are nude.

This a great film and I would recommend it to those who love foreign films and especially to those who had or is in to this affair, you know who you are. Happy viewing.

Great Mexican comming of age story!.......2004-12-20

I didn't have hopes for this movie being good. I was pleasantly surprised. Great story, great acting. A fun and not depressing comming of age story for a handsome 16 year old boy in Mexico City. He gets a surprise move in for what he thinks is a 11 year old girl cousin, she has grown up to be a hot hot hot older woman. He can't stop dreaming about her..she is dumped on by her neglectfull boyfriend..He lets his dreams be know to her...she eventually gives in to his strong boyish drive to be with an older woman...Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Que cosita linda Mama.

I first saw this movie when I was in Mexico about a decade ago. Many of you will feel identified with this kid who falls in love with an older woman who lives next door. Everything is about the forbidden desire for a teenager in Mexico in the 1990's. I cannot wait for the DVD release. You will see a different movie which will send you back to your teenage years.
