He's had some good performances in supporting parts, but Richard Pryor never starred in a film that captured his comic brilliance the way his concert films did--proving that magic isn't something you can bottle. This 1985 film is no exception, even though it was directed by Walter Hill three years after he turned Eddie Murphy into a movie star with 48 HRS. The seventh film reworking of a warhorse stage play, this movie stars Pryor and John Candy as a pair of minor-league baseball players whose best days are behind them. Then Pryor is informed that he's just inherited a fortune--$300 million. But it comes with a condition: he must spend $30 million in one month, with a number of rules about how much he can spend at one time and how many of any one thing he can buy. Both Pryor and Candy were at the top of their comedy game at this point in time but were utterly failed both by ham-handed direction and by a script that left them higher and drier than seems humanly possible, given the comic talents involved. --Marshall Fine

FUN FUN FUN!!
I would love to have the chance to spend this kinda money!
30 mill to get 300 mill!!
That would make a great TV reality show!!
Another great under dog movie!!

5 out of 5 stars Splendid comedy!.......2007-03-06

Montgomery Brewster (Richard Pryor) is a failed baseball player who inheirites a fortune from his late uncle (Hume Cronyn) but there's a catch to it all. He must spend 30 million dollars within 30 days in order to receive 300 million for he also must never tell anyone else why he has to spend the money, he gets help from his best friend Spike (John Candy) to spend the dough within 30 days or else if he fails he doesn't get the money.

Entertaining and underrated comedy flick is perhaps one of my favorite comedies ever! this is based on an original 1910 novel of the same name but i think this is the best adaptation of that story yet. The film co-stars Pat Hingle ("Batman" and "Maximum Overdrive") and Jerry Orbach, it's a very fun and funny comedy that is worth owning if you like good comedies.

The DVD has good picture with decent sound with only a few extras like production notes, cast and filmmakers bios and the trailer.

5 out of 5 stars Spend 30 million and have fun!.......2007-01-16

First, let me say that I love this movie. Brewster's Millions is great, and I'm biased. The combination of sports, comedy, and a great movie idea cannot be understated.

Richard Pryor and John Candy (as Monty Brewster and Spike Nolan, respectfully) are hilarious, delivering punch-lines, comebacks, and pithy comments throughout the entire movie. They're both washed up baseball players who, because of Brewster's unexpected inheritance. He's got to spend 30 million in 30 days without letting anyone know, without having any assets at the end of the 30 days, and be totally broke. If he's successful, he gets 300 million, the real inheritance. It's an ingenious idea for a movie. How would you do it?

Personally, I don't think it'd be that hard to do. I'd hire a bunch of celebrities to do things for me, essentially what Brewster does on a smaller scale (if they didn't bite at the offers, I'd hire washed-up celebrities that resort to reality tv to stay in the public eye).

I'd hire:
-Halle Berry as my personal bather, like the women that bathe Eddie Murphy in "Coming to America" (same outfits)
-Mike Tyson as a bodyguard
-Dale Earnhardt Jr. to be my chauffeur, make him speed excessively, and pay for his tickets and bail as needed
-Mariah Carey to sing me to sleep every night
-James Earl Jones to narrate my daily life (BOOMING VOICE: Jason wakes up. Jason opens the fridge to get milk for his cereal.)
-The Laker Girls to celebrate every time I opened a door, and Michael Buffer to announce my entry
-Jessica Alba to be my personal masseuse

The possibilities are endless, and the 30 million would be gone well before 30 days.

How would you spend 30 million!?

4 out of 5 stars A Richard Pryor & John Candy Great! 4/5 Stars!.......2005-06-14

I had never heard of this movie, but have always been a John Candy and Richard Pryor fan! Once I read the description, I had to see it! John Candy is Fabulous, and Richard Pryor Gives a great Performance, I can't complain about the movie, I didn't give it all 5 stars because it doesn't set as a classic picture in my mind.

Bottom Line: Great Movie! Lots of Laughs! If you're in my age group (18-24) and are looking for a movie to watch with some friends, I definitely recommend this one, I'll bet they haven't seen it, and they won't be able to hold back the laughs!

Millions wears its heart on its sleeve, and it wears it well. Two boys, still grieving the death of their mother, find themselves the unwitting benefactors of a bag of bank robbery loot in the week before the United Kingdom switches its official currency to the Euro. What's a kid to do? Director Danny Boyle takes a simple premise and, with the help of Frank Cottrell Boyce's sweet, smart script, finds something special to say about the hopes everyone has for the future of a changing world. Brothers Anthony and Damian have vastly different agendas for the stash, and then have to deal not only with the money's original thief but with the disarming woman who seems to be stealing their widowed father. The film is full of quirks that work--seven-year-old Damian (an endearing Alex Etel) has private conversations with a collection of eclectic religious saints--and a technically spirited way of commingling both the scary realities and fanciful imaginings of young minds. --Steve Wiecking

Millions (Danny Boyle, 2004)

I don't know what happened to Danny Boyle in 2002, but whatever it is, I have to say, I'm pretty impressed with it. I always avoided Boyle's films, save 28 Days Later..., because of my deep, abiding hatred for Trainspotting. Now, though, swayed by the critical acclaim (which is almost universal), I rented Millions to see if Boyle is, in fact, capable of making a decent comedy-drama. Surprise--he is.

Millions is the story of Damian (Alex Etel, in his first screen role), a kid who has a huge bag of cash fall--literally--into his lap a week before England converts to the Euro--so he's rich, for the sum total of a single week, unless he can find some way to change the money without being suspected of any wrongdoing or give it away to charity. His materialistic brother is all for the former option, while Damian, who's obsessed with Christianity and often sees (and converses with) the saints of antiquity, likes the latter idea. Unfortunately, he doesn't think too hard about it, and one particular sizeable donation draws the attention of Dorothy (Daisy Donovan), who finds herself both intrigued by the charitable nature of Damian, and attracted to his recently-widowed father (James Nesbitt). The four of them, and a cast of neurotic minor characters, count down the week to Euroization, but the original owners of the bag of money haven't forgotten about it...

While it's not as out-and-out hilarious as one might expect from such a ludicrous premise, it does fire on enough cylinders to make it well worth watching. The plot is crazy enough to keep everything moving, and the characters are as believable as possible given their unbelievable situations. (This rule is waived for some of the minor characters who exist in the film just for laughs--the Mormon collective at the end of the street, for example--but even those characters are at least consistently funny.)

Surprisingly good. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars It's lovely.......2007-05-10

That's all I wanted to say: "It's lovely". More? This, "Saving Grace", "Driving Lessons" and many others. Gentle, British films that entertain without the sugary syrup of America's movies.

4 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Heartwarming Family Film.......2007-03-21

Young Damian (Alex Etel) and his investment-minded brother, Anthony, miss their recently deceased mother very badly. So does their father. With that in mind, Damian and Anthony's dad moves them out of their old home and into a new one hoping to exorcise any painful memories. Once moved in, Damian sets up a cardboard house along the railroad tracks where he can escape into his own little world. While playing one day, a bag full of money literally falls on top of Damian's world. He shares his good fortune with Anthony who immediately begins to strategize on how to invest the money wisely. Unfortunately for the duo, the money will be useless in just a few days whenever the UK converts all of its money into Euros. Damian, being a very, very devout Christian, decides to give the money to the poor because he believes that it is a gift from God. Anthony, worried about things such as exchange and interest rates, tries to spend as much of his money on himself and stash some of it away in investments such as real estate.

Of course, this wasn't a gift from God. It was just one sack of a number of sacks of money strategically stolen and hidden by bank robbers. One of them was supposed to pick up the bag that young Damian found, and quickly begins to follow the young boy in order to get his money back. All of this is done without Damian's father knowing about this until one day at school, Damian makes a rather large contribution to a fund for poor children. The lady who is collecting the donations (Daisy Donovan), falls not only for the boy's giving heart but for his father as well.

As the story unfolds, Damian, Anthony, their dad and his new girlfriend struggle over what to do with the money. All the while Damian is getting advice from Catholic Saints who visit him throughout the film.

What happens to the money? Does the criminal ever catch up to Damian? You'll have to watch to find out. As another reviewer stated, this film does start out a tad bit slow but it soon picks up to a very nice pace. I don't recall any major curse words in the film. There is a little bit of peril, though, that might scare a few youngsters. Still, this is a wonderful film to watch with your entire family. After watching it, I'm sure that it will trigger many questions and comments from all observers.

It's a cute and heartwarming tale that is sure to please everyone in the family. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars you're either a giver or a spender.......2007-03-20

*Millions* was an interesting movie about money falling "from the sky" and seeing how people react with money.

The movie takes place in England. The family of three (a father and his 2 sons) move out of a house to a new place. They're all grieving for the wife/mother in their own way.

Damian is an imaginative young boy, who has no problem entertaining himself. He carries imaginary conversations with notable Christian saints. Anthony is the older brother who puts on this tough look.

One day, a large bag of money falls on top of Damian's play fort, which Damian notifies Anthony. They both decide to keep hush about the money. However, they both have different approaches of how to spend the money. Damian gives money to whomever needs it the most, especially to those he perceives as poor. Meanwhile, Anthony is tight with money by spending it only on himself or on things that will increase values.

However, there are 2 things going on as well. Britain will be converting their pounds to euros. So, pounds must either be spent or deposited to bank accounts within a few days. Otherwise, the pounds will no longer be valid. Another thing is that someone else wants that bag of money. The robber gets a hold of Damian and threatens him. Damian is scared and agrees to comply with the robber's demands.

However, the money becomes overwhelming for the boys. They get their dad involved as well as his new girlfriend.

*Millions* is a wonderful movie about how people react to a large sum of money. Of course, there are other sub-stories in this movie. If you're a softie, there is one part of the movie that'll make you cry. Just have that Kleenex ready...

4 out of 5 stars Richard Pryor Fan.......2007-03-17

If you like Richard Pryor, you'll love this DVD. Pryor plays three different characters in "Which Way is Up" and every character is a riot! His interaction with the children in "Bustin' Loose will have you in stitches! The only reason this doesn't get five stars is because of "Brewster's Millions", which I did not find quite as funny as the other three movies. Three great and one decent Richard Pryor movies all on one DVD---you can't beat it for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining!.......2007-01-09

Though I could not (and still cannot) get this DVD to play in my DVD player of choice, when I did have the opportunity to set it up in another room it was pure enjoyment. Richard Pryor was born to make laughs.

3 out of 5 stars Good Movies, Bare Bones Treatment.......2006-02-09

As you may know, comedian Richard Pryor passed away in December of 2005 following a massive heart attack. The award winning funnyman had also been suffering from Multiple Sclerosis. On February 7th, Universal released a four movie collection titled The Richard Pryor 4-Movie Collection. Universal re-released Bustin' Loose on DVD last year as part of their Soul Cinema collection, so I was a bit curious as to why this film was being released on DVD again.

The Richard Pryor 4 Movie Collection features the following films-Which Way Is Up, Brewster's Millions, Car Wash, and Bustin' Loose. This is a good collection of Pryor's funnier films. The bad thing about this collection is the bare bones treatment. There is no booklet, there are no new bonus features (as a matter of fact there are no bonus features at all), and there aren't even four discs. The movies are packaged on dual sided discs with two movies on each side of one disc. Each film is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1).

As for the movies, you may have seen them before on DVD. Which Way Is Up? was released on DVD in the past but has been out of print for awhile. This was one of Pryor's funniest vehicles. In this film he plays three different characters. Many critics have said that Eddie Murphy was inspired by this film because in later films Coming To America, and The Nutty Professor he juggled multiple roles. In this film Pryor stars as three different characters. Pryor stars as Leroy the orange picker, Leroy's father, and he stars as the minister who sexed up Leroy's wife while he was away working. Leroy himself also falls in love with another woman and finds himself juggling relationships.

Car Wash is a classic film with a host of guest stars. Pryor wasn't the star of Car Wash despite his name usually getting top billing in cover art. It's an ensemble film about people working at a popular car wash. Antonio Fargas (Starsky & Hutch), Bill Duke (Menace 2 Society) and George Carlin (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure) co-star in the film.

Bustin' Loose ushered in a new era of Richard Pryor films. This ushered in the family friendly Richard Pryor (although there is still strong language in the film). Richard Pryor stars in this film as a man on parole with the threat of going back to jail held over his head. He doesn't have much time but he has to transport Cicely Tyson and a group of rag tag youths across the country.

Brewster's Millions is a very popular Pryor film although it's considered a dud by many. In this film Pryor has inherited a lot of money, but to get the money has to spend $30 million dollars in thirty days. There is a catch. He can't purchase anything large like a house. It's a fun film and John Candy co-stars.

The set just comes across as cheap when you look at other movie collections that Universal has released in the past year. The Alfred Hitchcock Collection, and special editions of To Kill a Mockingbird, The Sting and The Deer Hunter seem so precious, unique, and effort filled. This set just seems thrown together. If you already own these films on DVD, keep your single disc sets. This collection is so bare bones it deserves to be in the bargain basket. What else is tragic about this movie collection is once again no bonus features. This is at least the third incarnation of Car Wash on DVD. So many of the people involved in the film are still alive and working in the industry. It would be great to get some kind of commentary or bonus featurette for this film one day. Also, since Richard has passed, it would have been nice if they held up this set's release to include some kind of tribute to Richard.

The bottom line is if you already own these films keep your single discs. If you don't own these films, this is a reasonable way to purchase all of the films.

Recorded at their 2000 dates from Wembley Stadium, England, Familiar to Millions celebrates not just nearly a decade of dominance by Oasis but also the fact that it is still actually possible to get them on the same stage at the same time. Moreover, while the band certainly had their troubles getting there (not the least of which was Noel Gallagher's decision to stay at home for many European dates), this finds all concerned with blistering form, with even the newer band members sounding like they were born to play with the monobrowed ones. The chosen set list also wisely skimps on selections from their recent work, preferring instead to concentrate on the likes of "Cigarettes & Alcohol," "Wonderwall," "Supersonic," "Shakermaker," "Don't Look Back in Anger," "Champagne Supernova," and a superb Noel-sung version of Neil Young's "Hey Hey My My."

The actual concert footage itself, though, is only the tip of the iceberg, with special features including a discography, graphics that were specially filmed for the dates, multicamera angles on "Cigarettes & Alcohol," and a documentary by Grant Gee, previously responsible for Radiohead's Meeting People Is Easy documentary. The most entertaining aspect of this DVD by far, however, is a Gary Crowley-conducted, pre-gig interview with the siblings in which ex- cokehead Noel gleefully admits that he can remember absolutely nothing whatsoever about recording (What's the Story) Morning Glory? --Warren Wayans

Description

The song choices were poor - "There and Then" was SIGNIFICANTLY better. And the audio on this DVD was very bad and muddy, probably because it is offered as "5.0," whatever that is supposed to mean.

4 out of 5 stars Great to have, even if you already own the CD.......2007-03-29

Now, maybe I'm a bit biased since Oasis is my favorite band ever, but I really am glad I bought this DVD. The image quality is quite good, and it's fun to have the bits of in-between-song banter that are cut from the CD. As far as the bonus features go, they're a bit minimal-- and to be honest, the crowd shots are a little silly at times -- but the interview portion is a good bonus, especially with Noel talking about his thoughts on the albums they'd released at that point. I don't think you have to be a super-fan to enjoy this.

4 out of 5 stars Some captions for the lads!.......2006-11-02

A really nice gig and a nice DVD presentation. It was a good show and the crowd was just awesome. The documentaries included are nice, really do a good job of making you feel like you actually attended the show. The last part of the show is Oasis at their best, compared to any other DVD or live show out there. At the beggining it drags a little: 'Who Feels love' and "gas Panic" are not great songs to play live and can get a little boring. Other than that , I wish the interview included captions, I cant understand a word they are saying!

4 out of 5 stars Familiar to everyone.......2006-10-24

I agree this is not as good as There and Then. But only because of the songs. This tour was in support of the 'standing on the shoulder of giants' album which is my least favourite in the entire Oasis catalogue. But as far as sound and visuals go, I reckon this is a lot better. You actually feel like you are a part of the event that took place on the night of the 21st of july 2000. Hard to believe it was that long ago. I have seen Oasis live a few times and they are excellent live, so if you have never seen them in concert and would like too I highly recommend this as a substitute for now.
The special features are outstanding and the accompanying interviews Liam and Noel actually make sense for a change, instead of their incoherent rambling from the past.
The versions of 'stand by me' and 'don't look back in anger' are my standout tracks here. I look forward to the next live DVD release from Oasis.

4 out of 5 stars Our Mum's dead!.......2007-05-27

5 out of 5 stars Great comedy!.......2004-07-06

3 out of 5 stars 1OO% CHEESY but it wasn't TOO BAD!.......2004-03-27

Here's the basic plot: A pack of money-grabbing, extremely rich and attractive relatives (the Ferretti's) are trying to take over their ailing uncle's industrial empire.
The pack is led by Maurizio Ferretti (played brilliantly by Billy Zane), a rich, very savy and attractive million dollar playboy...his main goal is to take over the family's million dollar business while his Uncle Leo is dying in a hospital somewhere. And how does he plan on doing this? Black-mailing his father, sleeping w/ numerous women (for pleasure AND to get what he wants, of course) and being an all around money hungry, scheming jerk!
Lauren Hutton plays Cristina, Uncle Leo's estranged wife who seems to be the only one staying at his bedside...
Carol Alt plays the beautiful (...)/wild child/bad seed niece who can't seem to keep her clothes on or get her life on track...and Alexandra Paul plays the promiscuous, (...), seductive, cold-hearted sister in-law. The plot is okay, but aside from the characters listed above, the acting [is bad]. And even though this movie was released in 1991, the bad hair and fashion looks like something out of a late 80's movie.
Lauren Hutton looks ravishing, Billy Zane is extra-yummy, and Carol Alt is extremely pretty...even Alexandra Paul (known for the flat-chested plain jane Lt. Stephanie Holden on Baywatch) gets into the seductive-(...)-queen role rather well.
But nothing can save the cheap quality, chessy (...) soundtrack, blah acting, and bad ending. If you have a hour or so to kill and don't mind seeing Billy Zane sleep w/ a bunch of women, including his cousin, his sister in law, and his dad's mistress or watching a bunch of rich spoiled people plot, whine, and (...) each other - then go ahead and pick this one up. I guess it can't hurt, call it a guilty pleasure.

3 out of 5 stars International corporation hi-jinks.......2003-01-18

Three reasons to rent (or buy) this movie are: Carol Alt, Alexandra Paul and Lauren Hutton. Two former supermodels and a Baywatch Babe to boot!
The plot is not that great. Billy Zane plays a rich young heir and stockholder in an international company who wheels and deals his way to increase his fortune, stabbing other family members in the back. He crosses paths (and bedsheets) with several women, among them the married Alexandra Paul and Zane's hot nightclubbing cousin, Carol Alt.
Don't expect too much. Aside from some European vistas and bed-hopping, it was a bore. It reminded me of a Judith Krantz novel. Maybe it was?

    1 out of 5 stars unwatchable.......2005-04-29

When this DVD arrived home, I expected quality for the price. It's not that the plot was bad - it's not. Rather, it's a bumbling comedy and actually quite amusing in a clumsy Austin Powers set in Rome vs. Great Britain sort of way - if one could see the picture! As soon as the credits rolled, snap, crackle, pop! All scenes in mottled gray midnight. This looks dubbed from a VHS cassette that was overplayed. I could still see lines in the picture. This was made in someone's basement maybe. I don't know. The image will shimmy, shake, flutter and flicker and the audio is muffled. The film ran a little over one hour, forty minutes of which gave me a migraine. I returned this DVD and found a restored copy via Troma company and guess what? The picture was restored, the audio clear as a bell and about 30 minutes of deleted scenes! Now this movie makes sense. It's a silly romp, for Hoffman fans it's a neat flick to own. But, Passion Productions wanted a fast profit without working to bring this movie up to 2005 DVD standards. I can't believe it was even sold for this price.

    1 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2003-09-24

I found the exact same edition of this DVD brand new at a discount store for $3. When I got it home, the video was terrible, and there was no audio. The recording quality is the worst I have ever seen, and there are NO extras. Even the film description on the box is full of typos, spelling errors and incorrect grammar. There was not even a paper insert in the DVD case. This looks like a DVD someone made in their garage...and they want $25 for it? I have seen this film before, and while not remarkable it is enjoyable for Hoffman fans. That having been said, I suggest you wait until they re-release in in watchable form!

5 out of 5 stars RAISING INCOMPETENCE TO NEW HEIGHTS WAS NOT THE PLAN.......2003-09-22

When a deported gangster dies in Italy, the U.S. Treasury department is very interested in the $1,000,000 Madigan owed the government, but managed to take to Italy with him. They send Jason Phister to Italy to find the money. His criteria for the job is that no one would ever guess he’s an agent for the U.S. government.

5 out of 5 stars Dustin Hoffman Rules!!.......2003-09-18

Dustin Hoffman rules as an american agent in Italy investigating the million dollars that is owed to the US Treasury from a deported American gangster!!It's a must see!!

    1 out of 5 stars What a turkey!.......2002-07-05

Not even Dustin Hoffman's presence can save this movie. It is simply awful. A joint American-Italian effort (though 'effort' may be misleading), Madigan's Millions is utterly inane and devoid of entertainment. Hoffman looks ill at ease, and fails to convince the audience that he enjoyed making the movie. The poor chap was simply embarrassed, no doubt, at being implicated in such an abysmal attempt at film-making. Dire.

1 out of 5 stars incredibly, unspeakably bad.......2006-04-02

Save yourself. Do not rent, purchase, or otherwise obtain this film. Do not view it, it will kill brain cells and make you sterile; it is so bad. Even if you are the biggest Ken Russell fan in the world, do not see this film. In fact, if you are the biggest Ken Russell fan in the world, you have every reason NOT to see this film. Remember the man for his 'triumphs' (if they can be called such), like THE DEVILS, WOMEN IN LOVE, MAHLER, or THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM. I would not see this film even if you just want something awful to giggle at at one of your little parties with your special friends. Nope. It's the cinematic equivalent of moldy spam.

1 out of 5 stars The Fall of the Louse of Usher.......2004-03-16

I'm a fan of both Ken Russell and Edgar Allen Poe and looked forward, in anticipation, of Ken Russell's reworking of Poe's horror stories. Well I was definately schocked: not in horror, but by the fact I wasted money on such a bad film. Calling the film amateurish would give it a redeaming value. All the performances were appalling: what's with all the BAD accents? Actors with teeth that bad should never show them, much less get a close up (and no it wasn't makeup)! Now I know why I couldn't find this film to rent first--it's that bad. ...

4 out of 5 stars The Great Man Does It Again.......2003-09-27

The great Ken Russell does it again; he takes the digital filmmaking revolution that giant step forward by showing everyone with a dv video camera how to make a bonafide feature film -- and a strikingly inventive and entertaining one at that! Bravo, Ken! More! More!

      5 out of 5 stars Russell-ific.......2003-09-20

I was super curious waiting for this one. How was Ken Russell going to pull off his newly found freedom, that of taking digital camera in hand and filming friends and cohorts in his back garden in loosley structured ten minute bits, stringing it all together, finding wide release and perhaps regaining the acclaim that has been missing him all these years? How? With skill, as simple as that. There is, as Russell-ites know, more skill in this man's pinky toe than all of Hollywood. And beginner film makers should take note. There is a world of possibilities in cinema. They are as limited as your imagination. "Louse" is wildly inventive and has all the great Russell trademarks: shock editing, surrealistic sets, costumes and make-up. And I'll be darned if their aren't some fabulous music videos with soulful music and classic Russell-ian touches: lovers by the sea side, a dancer on a gravestone to name a few. And since this is a horror movie, don't forget, be prepared for some pretty unsettling images. The humour is droll and Ken Russell acts through out. I was, quited frankly, impressed by the quality of the images. There may be some noticeable budgetary restraints, but after you settle in to the movie, you'll be back in Russell land. Ahhhh. It's been a long time.
