This is the restored, 209-minute director's cut of Wolfgang Petersen's harrowing and claustrophobic U-boat thriller, which was theatrically re-released in 1997. Originally made as a six-hour miniseries, this version devotes more time to getting to know the crew before they and their stoic captain (Jürgen Prochnow) get aboard their U-boat and find themselves stranded at the bottom of the sea. Das Boot puts you inside that submerged vessel and explores the physical and emotional tensions of the situation with a vivid, terrifying realism that few movies can match. As Petersen tightens the screws and the submerged ship blows bolts, the pressure builds to such unbearable levels that you may be tempted to escape for a nice walk on solid land in the great outdoors--only you wouldn't dream of looking away from the screen. The digital video disc offers either the German-language version with English subtitles, or the dubbed-into English version; the Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack reproduces every chilling depth charge and metallic groan with nerve-racking clarity. Also included is a short feature on the movie's production, but the segment gives away a lot, so watch the movie first. --Jim Emerson

This is the model for films about war at sea. The direction and photography are expert: there are very few scenes that look like model work, and you have no trouble believing you are on board the U-boat under the most perilous of conditions. I did think some of the depth charge explosions were too close to be survivable, but I'll accept that as arising from the film's need to get explosions and submarine into the same frame. The crew show a believable and gripping range of characteristics and emotions, including courage, desperation, and ingenuity. These men believe in their country but have little time for ideology. They have a bond that holds them together under the worst of circumstances, and the first-rate acting makes that very real. The ending brings home the cost and futility of war.

This 282-minute version of Das Boot is the full-length TV series, originally shown in six parts but here edited into a seamless whole. Director Wolfgang Petersen has since graduated to mega-budget Hollywood productions (2004's Troy for example), but has never managed to even come close to this, his German-language masterpiece. Petersen and his sterling cast (including Jürgen Prochnow in his best role as the U-boat Captain) went to great lengths to ensure that this claustrophobic depiction of life aboard the German sub U-97 while attacking British convoys in the Atlantic is thoroughly authentic, and totally convincing. Even the set itself, which is a replica of a U-boat interior, had no false walls, so all camera angles are necessarily from within its horribly narrow, overcrowded and sweaty confines. The result is certainly the finest submarine drama ever made, and one of the most compelling depictions of the physical, psychological and emotional effects of warfare.
This miniseries is rather longer than the movie version, which is also available on DVD in a director's cut version. The differences are not in matters of plot, but in the pacing: everything here takes longer to happen, while the crew must sit around, bicker, swear, and sweat it out--the agonizing searching for action, the tension of the attack, the terrible stress of hiding from enemy destroyers. Everything unfolds as if in real time, which is the great advantage a TV production has over a movie (contrast, for example, Band of Brothers with Saving Private Ryan). This, therefore, is the definitive presentation of a World War II classic. --Mark Walker

The Original Uncut Version.......2007-06-27
The full-length "uncut" version ties together a lot of loose ends that
were present in the shorter versions. In the shortened versions, it was
never clear why the U-96 was ordered to make the extremely dangerous run
through the straits of Gibralter or why U-96 was reprovisioned in the
Spanish port of Vigo. The uncut version provides an answer to that. It also
adds a bit of suspense because it becomes evident in the uncut version that
u-boat operations may have been penetrated by British Intelligence and Admiral Dönitz was taking measures in an attemp to throw the British off
their scent. The Germans were indeed trying to get some u-boats into the
Mediterranean to help secure Rommel's supply lines. This version also gives greater depth to the relationship between the captain and his crew
and their determined loyalty to him. Individual characters are seen much
more fully developed, this seemed especially true for radioman/sonar operator/medic Hinrich and the extraordinary care he rendered to the badly
injured Kriechbaum after U-96 was strafed by a British fighter in the
straits. This version does take some liberties with the english
sub-titles compared to the German dialogue, in many instances the "translation" does not fit at all, as a german speaker I did find that
a bit annoying but overall it doesn't detract that much from this version.
If you like submarine movies and "Das Boot" in particular, the "uncut"
version is highly recomended.
Director's cut is for women & children; Un-cut is for men........2007-06-12
I originally saw this on VHS ages ago (back before DVD), which was the original uncut version. An absolute riveting masterpiece to me at the time. I was watching it when I myself was sailing on a merchant vessel in the middle of the ocean and had plenty of time to kill, so I could some-what relate to the movie at the time I suppose. Years and years later, I bought it on DVD for my collection, not realizing it was a different, shortened Director's Cut version. It just wasn't the same movie!
I think the editorial review at Amazon says it best when it compares the Directors cut/Un-cut versions of Das Boot with Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers. Its the pace that sets the two versions apart, with the un-cut version seemingly unfolding in real time, and making you really feel what its like to be part of the crew. You feel the clausterphobia, and how tired you get of your shipmates faces, and the agonizing feeling of helplessness of getting blindly depth-charged. Really the true telling of a World War II epic of a submarine patrol! And the character development is lacking in the Director's cut version, as well as plot development. And we're not talking just a few outside shots of the submarine being edited out from the Director's cut, we're talking an hour and a half of the director's original vision gone! Imagine taking an hour and a half out of another long-telling epic war movie, like Lawrence of Arabia, and boiling it down to just the more action-packed sequences. It wouldn't have been anywhere near the Best Picture oscar winner that it was! Its all those little, subtle things that all add up into making it fully what it is. (kinda random example, but hopefully helps to illustrate the point). The Director's cut version of Das Boot is more of just a shallower action-flick, but admittedly is much more appealing to those with short attention spans.
But anyone who is into war movies, for their ultimate telling of the human condition in times of the most extreme psychological and physical conditions mankind can come up with, will appreciate the complexity of this full length version. Those brave movie-goers that want to explore the depths and voyage into the misery, the insanity, the desperation, and the shear terror of war, will find the Un-cut version the ONLY version; and the Director's cut a much simpler, dumbing-down-of-america, crowd-pleasing type of movie.
When the original, un-cut version was finally released on DVD several years later, I rushed out and bought it THE VERY DAY it came out, and skipped work to go home and watch it. Ah ya, baby, that's the good stuff. Just what I had originally remembered, and what I had been jonesin' for since I was forced to settle with the inferior Director's cut version many years before.

got this for my hubby and he is very happy with it and the price we paid
Sub lovers highly recommend!.......2007-05-09
Outstanding uncut, detailed, emotionally filled action submarine classic. If you watched the original movie in the past and enjoyed it, I would highly recommend this full, uncut version of this movie! The only negative issue I saw in the movie, was the special effects, (i.e. model ships/subs) took away somewhat the full impact of the classic 'sub vs ship' hunts. But I guess that is understandable since the movie was filmed circa 1981. Very good submarine movie; recommend using the subtitles option, in order to feel the full experience of the German crew aboard their U-boat!

Description
DAS BOOT: This gripping tale from Academy Award® nominated director Wolfgang Peterson follows the daring patrol of U96, one of the famed German U boats known as the "gray wolves." The crew aboard the U96 is graphically portrayed in a desperate life and death struggle, coping with endless hours of claustrophobic boredom at sea, which quickly gives way to terror when confronting the enemy. DAS BOOT delivers an amazingly accurate account of Germany's elite U boat crewmen, as it deliberately hammers away at the tragic waste of war. ANZIO: Screen greats Robert Mitchum, Peter Falk, and Arthur Kennedy star in the riveting war drama ANZIO, a vivid portrait of one of the bloodiest WWII battles ever fought. After landing with allied troops at Anzio, Italy in 1944, war correspondent Dick Ennis (Mitchum) and buddy Corporal Rabinoff (Falk) tell Anzio commander General Lesley (Kennedy) that the road to Rome is wide open. But instead of heading to Rome, Lesley attempts to build a coastal stronghold, only to discover that the Germans have outflanked them by enclosing the Anzio beachhead. Four months and over 30,000 casualities later, the Allied forces smash through the German lines and victoriously march to Rome. Directed by highly-acclaimed action director Edward Dmytrk (The Caine Mutiny, Back to Bataan), ANZIO is a powerful film and a symbol of heroic tenacity. THE CAINE MUTINY: This is a classic film of modern day mutiny aboard a Naval vessel based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Herman Wouk. The nervous and inept behavior of Captain Queeg (Humphrey Bogart) during maneuvers aboard the U.S.S. Caine a destroyer/mine sweeper attracts the attention of the ship's crew members and it's executive officer, Maryk (Van Johnson). When Queeg's neurotic behavior reaches a breaking point during a fierce typhoon, Maryk takes command of the ship. Queeg then retaliates by having Maryk court-martialed. In a tense courtroom sequence, Lt. Greenwald (Jose Ferrer), assigned to Maryk's defense, systematically breaks Queeg down on the stand. Maryk wins the case but the victory is short-lived as Lt. Greenwald reveals that the men have all been the unwitting victims of a deceptive shipmate named Lt. Keefer (Fred MacMurray), who actually instigated the mutiny for his own purposes. An all-star cast makes this film one to remember. SECRETS OF THE SEA WOLVES: Learn what life was like aboard a Nazi sub in the North Atlantic during World War II. WWII's longest, most crucial battle was waged at sea where German U-boat packs roamed the Atlantic hunting their prey. In a campaign to cut off vital supplies from the U.S. to Great Britain, they came close to starving England into surrender. If they succeeded, the Allies would almost certainly lose the war. Using archival footage of U-boats at work, we see that the Germans were at the forefront of technology, and how the Allies fought back to force the U-boat menace into submission.

Another Collectable.......2007-01-09
I have every DVD version of Das Boot. I have even watched it with the Audio in German and English subtitles, it never fails to shock me. Together with Anzio & the Caine Mutiny, these movies really start to bring home what our Fathers and Grandfathers went through during WWII, lest we forget!
When you can buy great, multiple movies together like this, it's a no-brainer.

A Necessary Diversion--Get a Code-Free DVD Player!!!.......2007-01-11
With all of the versions of DAS BOOT floating around, one would wonder which is THE version to buy. First of all, if you are considering the full Television Series--this is probably the one to buy, since the German version has no subtitles. And, if you have not figured out how to make your DVD player CODEFREE or found one (there is a large online auction that has many such players) and you are a serious DVD collector, it is about time you bought one!! They are not that expensive....before this came out on DVD, I scrounged the studios to find a VHS player that was multi-region, and it was used and cost me $275!!! I bought it to view the then-available 6 cassette version of the original television series (6 parts).
So, if you really want to get the feeling of being in a 50-man Type VIIC U-Boat AFTER the Happy Times of the early Battle of the Atlantic, you must watch this version. There really is nothing like it--before or since. Most highly recommended!

How do you expect other sub movies to compete?.......2006-11-24
By now you know everyone thinks this is one of the greatest movies in the cinema. It is described as realistic, and has great camera work. You could probably go on forever about the actors and the directors and so forth. What is really interesting is they are all correct; this is one of the best sub movies ever. And you do get swallowed up in the action. There are other movies that can rival this one. Yet it does not diminish what was accomplished here.
The base story is the daily lives of an Unterseeboot crew. It shows the trials and tribulations they must go through to accomplish their missions. One thing you can be sure of is that this is not an anti war movie. They would not be there if they were not hunters.
You do get the feel of what it is like when the hunters become the hunted.

The Patriot
Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Emmerich embraces clichés and hackneyed melodrama that a more gifted director would have avoided. Instead of attempting a truly great film about the most pivotal years of American history, Emmerich settles for a standard revenge plot with the Revolutionary War as an incidental backdrop. On those terms, the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honor exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father. At its best, The Patriot conveys the horror of war among innocent civilians, and the epic battle scenes, while by no means masterful, are graphically intense and impressive. And although Ledger's love interest (Lisa Brenner) is too bland to register much emotion, the focus on family (which frequently relegates the war to background history) provides a suitable vehicle for Gibson, who matches his achievement in Braveheart with an effectively brooding performance. --Jeff Shannon
A Knight's Tale
There's no rule against rock anthems from the 1970s in the soundtrack for a movie about a medieval jousting champion, but if you're going to attempt such jarring anachronisms, you'd better establish acceptable ground rules. Writer-director Brian Helgeland does precisely that in A Knight's Tale and pulls off this trick with such giddy aplomb that you can't help but play along. (Upon witnessing a crowd of peasants at a jousting match, singing and clapping to the beat of Queen's "We Will Rock You," you're either going to love this movie or dismiss it altogether.) Other vintage rock hits will follow, but Helgeland--the Oscar®-winning cowriter of L.A. Confidential--handles this ploy with judicious goodwill, in what is an otherwise honest period piece about a peasant named William (Heath Ledger) who rises by grit and determination to the hallowed status of knighthood. As if the soundtrack weren't audacious enough, Helgeland (recovering from the sour experience of his directorial debut, Payback) casts none other than Geoffrey Chaucer (wonderfully played by Paul Bettany) as William's cohort and match announcer, along with William's pals Roland (Mark Addy) and Wat (Alan Tudyk), and feisty blacksmith Kate (Laura Fraser). Of course there must be a fair maiden, and she is Jocelyn (newcomer Shannyn Sossamon), with whom William falls in love while battling the nefarious Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) on the European jousting circuit. Add to this an inspiring father-son reunion, Ledger's undeniable charisma, a perfect supporting cast, and enough joyful energy to rejuvenate the film's formulaic plot, and A Knight's Tale becomes that most pleasant of movie surprises--an unlikely winner that rises up, like its hero, to exceed all expectations. --Jeff Shannon
Das Boot
This is the restored, 209-minute director's cut of Wolfgang Petersen's harrowing and claustrophobic U-boat thriller, which was theatrically rereleased in 1997. --Jim Emerson

Flammen in Paraise (Fire in Paradise):
On her honeymoon the daughter of a rich plant owner realizes that she's not happy with her marriage and she decides to swap roles with the missionary to India...
Das Boot ist voll (The Boat Is Full):
During World War II, Switzerland severely limited refugees: 'Our boat is full.' A train from Germany halts briefly in an isolated corner of Switzerland. Six people jump off seeking asylum: four Jews, a French child, and a German soldier. They pose as a family: the deserter as husband, Judith as his wife, an old man from Vienna as her father, his granddaughter and the French lad, whom they beg to keep silent, as their children. The fabrication unravels through chance and the local constable's exact investigation...
Der Berg (The Mountain):
In 1922, a weather observer and his wife lived in a remote cabin high in the Swiss Alps. As this drama begins, they are being joined by a third person, an Austrian (Peter Simonischek) who coveted the job the Swiss man had won in this bleak location. Not only that, but he also has his eyes on the Swiss man's lovely wife...
Die Reise (The Journey):
The Journey is an objective look at neo-Fascist terrorism. Markus Boysen plays a member of a terrorist gang who breaks away from the movement. He also ""kidnaps"" his son from the gang's commune, rather than have the boy raised to be a terrorist himself. In flashback, we see that Boysen was the son of a celebrated Nazi author, whose mansion was confiscated by the occupying American troops...
