Amazon.com essential video

A conventional boy-and-his-horse story set against the red rocks of remote Australian mountains. (If there's a wide-screen edition, grab it. The scenery is one of the movie's strongest features.) Tom Burlinson is Jim Craig, a young man left stranded after his father's death who is struggling to save the family farm. He proves his manhood during a hair-raising hunt over the wooded slopes in search of an escaped stallion. The great, grizzled, Australian character actor Jack Thompson (the idealistic lawyer in Breaker Morant) is the tough, older horseman who takes the lad under his wing. The director, George Miller (not to be confused with the action-master who made the Mad Max films) allows costar Kirk Douglas to mug and grimace and prance far too much in a duel role as a pair of lovable old coots who hate each other's guts. Luckily, one of the coots has a handsome daughter (Sigrid Thornton, an Elizabeth McGovern-type with grit), who also has a way with horses. So it isn't all rocks and pine trees. --David Chute

Description

With its unforgettably heroic story, its stunning cinematography, and acting performances that are uniformly excellent, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER is one thrilling adventure you won't want to miss. Set during the 1880's, when the Australian frontier was as wild and dangerous as the American West, the film follows the exploits of a handsome youth (Tom Burlinson) who sets out to tame a wild herd of horses. Taking on a challenge many men had attempted before him, he rides deep into the treacherous and untamed wilderness of his native timberlands where boys become men fast - or die trying. Featuring Kirk Douglas in a remakable dual role and highlighted by a climactic chase involving 40 horsemen and 90 wild stallioins thundering across snow-covered peaks, THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER is destined to become a legendary film!

3 out of 5 stars Why No Widescreen?!.......2007-06-30

This is a great movie, but it was originally shown in theaters in the 2:35:1 Widescreen format. I know some people like the full screen format over widescreen, but so much of the beauty and landscapes are lost in pan and scan full screen. Why can't this film be released with both pan and scan & widescreen. I know I am not the only person who would like to see it released in widescreen. Please consider a re-release Disney for the widescreen audience. Thanks

Writer-director Sam Raimi's extremely stylized, blood-soaked follow-up to his creepy Evil Dead isn't really a sequel; rather, it's a remake on a better budget. It also isn't really a horror film (though there are plenty of decapitations, zombies, supernatural demons, and gore) as much as it is a hilarious, sophisticated slapstick send-up of the terror genre. Raimi takes every horror convention that exists and exaggerates it with mind-blowing special effects, crossed with mocking Three Stooges humor. The plot alone is a genre cliché right out of any number of horror films. Several teens (including our hero, Ash, played by Bruce Campbell in a manic tour-de-force of physical comedy) visit a broken-down cottage in the woods--miles from civilization--find a copy of the Book of the Dead, and unleash supernatural powers that gut every character in sight. All, that is, except Ash, who takes this very personally and spends much of the of the film getting his head smashed while battling the unseen forces. Raimi uses this bare-bones story as a stage to showcase dazzling special effects and eye-popping visuals, including some of the most spectacular point-of-view Steadicam work ever (done by Peter Deming). Although it went unnoticed in the theaters, the film has since become an influential cult-video favorite, paving the way for over-the-top comic gross-out films like Peter Jackson's Dead Alive. --Dave McCoy

Description

Ash (Bruce Campbell), the sole survivor of The Evil Dead, continues his struggle with the forces of the dead. With his girlfriend possessed by demons and his body parts runnning amok, Ash is forced to single-handedly battle the legions of the damned as the most lethal -- and groovy -- hero in horror movie history!

Welcome to Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, director Sam Raimi's infamous sequel to The Evil Dead and outrageous prequel to Army of Darkness! This unhinged horror classic is now fully remastered in state-of-the-art Dolby Digital 5.1 supervised by THX and packed with extras. So, sit back, strap in and rev up the chainsaw: Evil Dead II has returned...like you've never seen or heard it before!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-06-17

This is one of the best films ever made.

I should end the review there, but I guess I'll add a few other remarks, since that line alone would strike many as preposterous. Ok, first I should clarify: this is one of the best films ever made if you like the horror genre (and especially the comedy-horror sub-genre). Obviously if you hate horror films you won't think this is very good. That's fine. Usually when I see those "Greatest 100 movies" type lists, I don't like more than 2 or 3 on the entire list. Everyone has an opinion, and opinions are of necessity subjective. So if you don't like horror... run from this page, run very quickly.

Still here? Great! Anyway, I'm not going to go over all the great stuff in the film, most people have covered that pretty well. There's gore, there's slapstick, there's a ton of sight gags and wonderfully corny lines and catch phrases. It also has some interesting characters, especially the heroic fool Ash. This is just a damn fine movie.

The packaging is certainly... interesting. The artwork inside is nice, though a depiction of the skull on the original cover would have been nice (especially since there are two blank pages). The commentary is great, with lots of entertaining stories, tons of insights and things to watch for in the movie, and some bad jokes (as one would expect). I wish they would have added another commentary or two, as there seems to be (based on what I've read) quite a bit more that could be said about this film, but I guess one will have to do. The other extras were also pretty interesting, with even the picture section (a narrated slide show) being engaging, which is a first.

5 out of 5 stars excelent edition!.......2007-05-29

Hola. Este dvd de evil dead 2 es altamente recomendable para cualquier fan de los DVDS o cualquier fan de EVIL DEAD. Es un lujazo de edicion y se lo recomiendo a todo el mundo.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Comedy/Horror Standard.......2007-05-23

Allow me to preface this review with a helpful fact. A few years back when Spin Magazine was writing about the films they felt were the greatest of the 20th century, they chose to include Sam Raimi's sequel to his very first film; which was a small independent horror called The Evil Dead. The Evil Dead was a great film in it's own right, however, the editors at Spin wanted to give Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn the recognition they felt it deserved. So they placed it at the top of their list...that's right, they felt that it is, in fact, the single greatest cinematic achievement of the 20th century.

Evil Dead 2 follows Ash Williams and his girlfriend into a small creepy Michigan cottage where they stumble upon some recordings that contain readings from an ancient relic called the book of the dead, and by playing these recordings they unleash demonic supernatural forces that quickly haunt and possess everything from the trees outside and Popeye's lamp to Ash's hand and his girlfriend's severed head. The shenanigans unfold and Ash is more game than perhaps anyone to take on these evil forces as best as he can, but some sort of defeat is consistently inevitable.

As a reader I hope you are not anticipating my rebuttal to Spin Magazine here. I just so happen to concur 100% with Spin's gutsy assertion. On the surface of Evil Dead 2, we are seeing vintage 80s shock horror but it certainly isn't presented deeply enough to qualify amongst the failures within that genre. Evil Dead 2 is microcosmically structured like classic slapstick and macrocosmically it functions as pure satire. In this sense it's budget is used firmly to it's advantage and runs together with the theme of making a select audience laugh, first and foremost. Those who are both distinctly either disturbed by gore or preoccupied by gore as a strength in horror, should take keen note that gore in this film is applied almost exclusively for physical slapstick comedy. Those who hate gore will hate it here and those who love to be immersed in gore may not understand or appreciate it's use in Evil Dead 2.

We get to see a chubby fruit cellar witch's soul-swallowing head extend via shoddy stop-motion effects. We get to see an eyeball pop out of her head and shoot across the room into some chick's mouth. We get so see blood spray humorously and pretty consistently out of the walls and floors of the cottage. We get to see Ash fight his hand, cut it off, and add a chainsaw to where his hand once was. We get to see him kill his girlfriend and fight both her severed head and headless body in a tool shed at the same time. We get to see Ash get clumsily chased around the house by a force of evil we never see. We also get to see the volume of slapstick comedy increase as the film goes on and finally we get to see a conclusion that still makes me kind of wish they never made a sequel (even though Army of Darkness is in and of itself a very good movie).

Evil Dead 2 may require a deeper degree of movie history appreciation, perhaps more specifically to exploitation and horror films. I know I sound like a movie snob saying that but the film does offer some fun and fitting tributes or references to past films. I think it is definitely fair to say that Raimi has a great appreciation for movies in general and we can plainly see that he has so much fun making them. Evil Dead 2 for me is fun, affable, and carefree; it is all the things it shouldn't be on it's surface, and it is perfect for that fact alone.

5 out of 5 stars brillant film funny as hell.......2007-05-07

great film very hard to get on r2 to in uk but was thrilled to find it here the 3rd and final film in the siries gr8 stuff

5 out of 5 stars Groovy.......2007-05-04

The series takes a left turn towards comedy in this sequel to a straight out horror film, not to say there is no horror to be found. There are plenty of scenes that will make you jump if you don't know what is coming, but there is a lot of laughs as well. In one word, the movie is fun. Bruce Campbell carries the film since it really does focus on his character and changes Ash from a quiet person into this explosive action hero that you can't help but cheer on! Every time I think of my favorite scenes, the majority of them involve Ash, which is what makes him such a great character. The big scene I immediately think of is when he fights his own hand, you'll just have to watch to see that for yourself.

A bigger budget was used in the making of this movie, but some B qualities still can be seen in the movie. Such as you can see there is no roof to the cabin when Ash is trying to out run the deadite spirit following him into the house. Another instance being when the eye pops out of the deadite, you can see the little black piece of plastic making the eye fly. Small things like that do not effect this movie, the story is compelling and you will ignore anything that seems cheesy. There is too much good about the movie and will always win over anything bad that can be said about this movie.

People kept asking after watching the first movie, why wasn't Ash every possessed in the first film when all of his friends were? Well, he gets to be possessed in this film in more than one occasion, so it goes to show that even he isn't immune. Overall, this is another MUST SEE! I have watched the movie many times and this is definitely something that will never get old.

Recorded on a single night in June 2000, In the Flesh: Live is a thrilling live testament to the strength of Roger Waters's peculiar artistic vision. Backed by a crack ensemble of both fresh and seasoned players, the former Pink Floyd songsmith powers through Floyd classics, underserved relics, and highlights from his spotty solo career. The man is in great shape, physically and musically, and he obviously has a blast playing live.

What of the axe work? Accept the fact that Waters and Floyd guitarist David Gilmour no longer play together, and you'll appreciate stand-ins Snowy White and Doyle Bramhall II--and the degree to which they honor the parts and solos immortalized by Gilmour. (See the lavish but impersonal Pulse for a healthy dose of Gilmour's Floyd.) The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix is massive, presenting both the music's inherent spaciousness and the favorable acoustics in Portland, Oregon's Rose Garden Arena. The DVD's 18-minute documentary is long on downtime and short on musical interplay. Any way you cut it, though, this is a must for Floyd fans and a real treat for lovers of arty, intelligent rock. --Michael Mikesell

Description

Columbia recording artist and Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters toured the United States for the first time in 12 years in 1999-2000 with his highly acclaimed "In The Flesh" show that presented, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of Waters's music including: early Pink Floyd material; classic compositions from his masterpieces "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon;" less well-known pieces from "Animals," "Wish You Were Here," and "The Final Cut;" songs from the solo tour de force "Amused To Death" and "The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking;" and the debut of a new song, "Each Small Candle." Songs: In the Flesh, The Happiest Days of Our Lives, Another Brick in the Wall Part 2, Mother, Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert, Southampton Dock, Pigs on the Wing Part 1, Dogs, Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-8), Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Breathe (In The Air), Time, Money, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking Part 11 (5:06 am? 5 out of 5 stars Wow -Absolutely amazing.......2007-05-14

When I bought this DVD I didn't really know what to expect from Waters, being more of a David Gilmour fan I was a bit skeptical, but totally blown away nonetheless. This is a must have for anyone who loves the late seventies/early eighties Floyd. I hate to admit this, but I actually enjoyed it even more than PULSE.

5 out of 5 stars sweet.......2007-05-09

It is a pretty decent concert- sound and video pretty good- its a keeper

5 out of 5 stars Pink Floyd: Uncovered.......2007-04-27

Being a fan of Pink Floyd's music in the early 80's, this DVD was a real treat! For the first time, seeing Roger Waters singled out was a real eye opener for me. I had only really thought of Pink Floyd as a sum of its parts; not as unique musicians coming together to be a part of something very special.
Seeing Roger on stage, behind the scenes and interacting with his fellow band mates made everything seem more "real", better understood.
I whole-heartedly recommend this DVD for those who are only even partially interested in Pink Floyd's music. The sound quality is unbelieveable and the video quality is at least as good.

"Shine on, you crazy diamond!"

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!!!!.......2007-04-12

Waters the Pink Floyd's Soul & Brain comes back with this amazing concert, a real masterpiece, the only sad thing is that is not a DTS sound in the DVD but that's not a impediment to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-02-10

WOW, fantastic sound, entertaining show, polished performers and those wonderful Pink Floyd songs. Personally, I really enjoyed hearing Roger's solo work. My favorite was 'Amused to Death' but 'The Bravery of Being Out of Range' has an upbeat energy and is done very well with a better sound than the released 'faux' concert version on the original album. After seeing Roger's 2006 tour I now think the visuals were the only weakness in this DVD but the true fan will love it and look forward to his next release from The Dark Side of the Moon tour. Here's to hoping!

4 out of 5 stars A bit of false advertising.......2007-05-20

I bought this dvd because I enjoyed the Snowy River movies, and I like Guy Pearce and Hugh Jackman, so I figured, "Why not?"

The DVD consists of 3 episodes of the series set in Australia - The McGregor Saga - which, I gather, was created following the success of the Snowy River movies. Those 3 episodes are "Comeback", "The Grand Opening", and "Black Sheep". While I enjoyed the episodes quite a bit, it was a bit like jumping into the middle of something with little context, because of the nature of it being a TV series and these episodes not being the first. I'd like to see more. But, the thing that really got to me is that Guy Pearce doesn't appear ONCE in any of the three episodes. His character is talked about, but is evidently 'away' for the period of these three episodes. I guess they are trying to capitalize on his more recent success, but I don't care for the misleading tactics. Hugh Jackman, of course, is great as always.

All of that said, I would recommend this to anyone interested in good family viewing (as long as their heart is not set on seeing Guy Pearce). It's like an updated, less corny Bonanza, set in Australia.

5 out of 5 stars Snowy River: Macgregor Saga.......2007-04-01

The movie was great. It's an Austrailan Western, which features a young
Hugh Jackman. If you are a western or Hugh Jackman lover, this is the perfect movie.

A handful of enchanting stories by Ezra Jack Keats (1916-1983) are beautifully adapted as "moving storybooks" in this treasury of tales beginning with the Caldecott Medal winner, "The Snowy Day." When Peter discovers a pristine world of white outside his window, his wondrous day unfolds with the simple pleasures of sticks, snow-laden trees, and snow angels. Peter appears in six more stories growing from a small boy in "Whistle for Willie" to adolescence in "Pet Show!" In Keats's words, "All that happens in a child's life is meaningful." His stories depict common childhood experiences such as moving and making friends, facing fears, adjusting to a new sibling, and discovering nature. Faithful to the gently paced books, Scholastic's film tribute is narrated by soothing storytellers, and accompanied by flute and guitar instrumentals. Viewers have the option of reading along with words on the screen... and don't miss the bonus featurette, a 1969 interview with the beloved author. (Ages 3 to 7) --Lynn Gibson

My grandson, age 3, had been asking and asking and asking for the Snowy Day DVD because the "book" was already one of his favorites. Although we have several DVD's with accompanying books, we didn't have The Snowy Day DVD.
When DVD arrived, it just happened to be a snowy day. Jacob was completely spellbound watching this very special DVD about a boy's experience with snow, while he read along from one of his own favorite books and told me all about the story.

My 5 month old baby watches the images. I can't wait until he is older to really enjoy these. I enjoy watching them also. Great find

5 out of 5 stars This has been in the DVD player for months........2005-01-30

When I was a child, I loved "Snowy Day," the picture book about Peter, who brings a snowball inside in his coat pocket, and every other Ezra Jack Keats book my parents read to me. Other than "Pet Show" (1992), these were all produced soon after each book was written (1960's -- early '70's) and, I feel, were done very faithfully.
These pieces represent an era when producers didn't have a lot of effects to work with -- just the picture in the book, a narrator (and these narrators are all great), and music -- and couldn't count on licensed character synergies to carry a child's interest. My first video editing assignment ever was to shoot, cut, record, select music for, and edit a children's book. It's not as simple as it might seem. (I set "Where the Wild Things Are" to REM's "Perfect Circle" for the quiet bits of sailing over the sea and such, and something from Hüsker Dü's "Land Speed Record" for the wild rumpus.)
The overall mood of these pieces is very quiet, gentle, thoughtful. "Peter's Chair" would be good for discussing any new siblings that might be arriving in your house.
I believe Loretta Long, the narrator whose voice sparkles in several of these short films, went on to become Susan on Sesame Street.
I am consistently turned off by almost all children's programming. Buy this DVD.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2004-03-18

Some of the reviews have comments about the animation of this DVD. Keep in mind that these stories were books first (with very good illustrations). Children who have grown up with video games may not have the attention span to enjoy these stories.

I especially enjoyed the interview with the author that is included as a bonus.

4 out of 5 stars Very good resource.......2004-02-02

I have used this video/dvd for my first grade classes in the school library after reading the stories to the students first. When presenting the video/dvd stories, I use the captioning option so the students can read along with the stories being presented. I have found that the classes are riveted to the stories, even though they have heard them from the librarian. To children raised in the audio/visual age, these videos/dvds work well. Could they be better and have better animation? Yes, but they are an excellent available resource.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Addition for the Thomas Fan.......2007-05-14

This is a nice DVD for the Thomas fan, although it is fairly short. Stories include "It's Only Snow," "Jack Frost," "Toby Had a Little Lamb," "Snow," "Thomas' Christmas Party," and "Thomas and the Missing Christmas Tree." There are also three very short, very easy games--"Thomas' Order Fun," "Match the Snowflake," and Decorate a Christmas Tree." For those with young children who are huge Thomas fans, this will be a welcome addition to your DVD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Watch, Learn and Grow - .......2006-01-27

I am a big fan of all Thomas videos as they teach toddlers good manners and have a positive story. Good DVD!

    3 out of 5 stars Typical Thomas.......2005-12-28

The actual Thomas videos are standard fare, but the video extras are not very exciting. There's one sing-a-long, which is "Winter Wonderland." Our copy came with a cute frozen Percy and Christmas Caboose.

We have found that with the Carlin/Baldwin/Starr (this one is Carlin/Baldwin), our son is not as interested as with the British narrator. Our son (two and a half) is used to watching Thomas on Saturday mornings on PBS. This is our first video. It has taken him a while to get used to the different narrators. Actually, the first few times, he lost interest almost immediately. As he has become used to the different narrator, he's gained interest, but if this is your first entry into the different narrators, just keep this in mind!

Overall, I'm just glad to finally have Thomas on demand!

5 out of 5 stars We love this DVD!.......2005-09-29

A wonderful DVD for the holidays. We bought this last Christmas, and have enjoyed it all year. It comes with a darling wooden Holiday Caboose.

    5 out of 5 stars a terrific conclusion.......2005-09-28

In my opinion this is one the last really enjoyable Thomas videos. I still videos like this one and the older George Carlin and Ringo Starr videos at the age of 12. This is probably the most recent Thomas video that I still watch and throughly enjoy. Most of my other favs are the ones from Carlin and Starr's careers. An excellent Thomas video.
