Armchair sleuths, get out your trenchcoats: Universal has released the sophomore season (1972-73) of the classic detective series Columbo, starring Peter Falk as the sage but rumpled police lieutenant. As with the first season, there's plenty of star power in front of and behind the camera to abet Falk in these eight 90- and 120-minute episodes: John Cassavetes stars in the season premiere, Etude in Black, as a philandering symphony conductor, with Blythe Danner and Hollywood legend Myrna Loy in support; Oscar winner Ray Milland is a scheming orchid grower in "The Greenhouse Jungle," co-starring Bradford Dillman and William Smith; Robert Culp and Dean Stockwell are a football team manager and owner, respectively, whose disagreements blossom into murder in "The Most Crucial Game"; and Jeanette Nolan offers stellar comic relief in "Double Shock," which features Martin Landau as identical twins--one of whom has murdered their uncle. Performances by Richard Basehart, Laurence Harvey, Leonard Nimoy, Anne Francis, Anne Baxter, and Mel Ferrer also highlight the season; direction by small-screen stalwarts like Boris Sagal, Jeremy Paul Kagan, and Nicholas Colasanto ("Coach" on Cheers) and scripts by Stephen Bochco also bring quality and style to the proceedings. Sadly, no extras are available in this five-disc set, but the stellar image and sound quality (and lack of commercials) should appeal to series fans and newcomers alike. --Paul Gaita

Columbo Just gets Better!.......2007-06-05
There are few mystery shows that I tend to watch over again but Columbo is one of them. I bought Columbo for the British Dagger of the Mind partly taken off of William Shakespeare's Macbeth. The fact that the main characters are an acting married couple playing the deadly couple onstage only to become a reality offstage by killing Sir Roger. Anyway, there are other treasures here and one of my favorites if Etude in Black with John Cassavetes and Blythe Danner with Myrna Loy about an American conductor who kills his mistress. Of course, one of the hilarious moments is when Columbo meets his match in Jeanette Nolan who plays a devoted, immaculate housekeeper in DOuble Shock with Martin Landau playing identical twin brothers. The Most Crucial Game stars Robert Culp and Dean Stockwell as a football team owner and manager who thinks he is gotten away with murder. Then there is the one episode with chess starring Laurence Harvey as a star chess player who is against the Russian champion. Of course, Leonard Nimoy plays a diabolical doctor in a Stitch in Crime. Now for English teachers who want to teach Shakespeare, I would recommend Dagger of the Mind for the honors or advanced group of kids. I do love Anne Baxter in Requiem of a Fallen Star.
ESSENTIAL.......2007-05-29
John Cassavetes, Myrna Loy, Blythe Danner, Ray Milland, Robert Culp, Valerie Harper, Richard Basehart, Anne Baxter, Mel Ferrer, Leonard Nimoy, Anne Francis, Laurence Harvey, Paul Stewart : they're all here in this second season which is essential to all of us who are longing for quality mystery TV shows. Let's admire them in :
Columbo Collector's Edition: Etude In Black : ***** For John Cassavetes, one of the most interesting American directors, this episode must be seen again and again.
THE GREENHOUSE JUNGLE : ***** Second apparition of Ray Milland in the show. Directed by Boris The Omega Man Sagal.
THE MOST CRUCIAL GAME : ***** Directed by Jeremy Kagan, the esteemed director of Big Fix and Heroes.
Columbo Collector's Edition: Dagger Of The Mind : ***** Columbo in London. Still in shape despite the jet lag.
Columbo Collector's Edition: Requiem For A Falling Star : ***** With Anne Baxter. Columbo in Hollywood with Edith Head as herself. Great episode.
Columbo Collector's Edition: A Stitch In Crime : ***** It's the first time Lt. Columbo loses his temper, in front of Leonard Nimoy. Also a great episode.
Columbo Collector's Edition: The Most Dangerous Match : ***** In my opinion, the best episode of the season and maybe of the first two seasons. Don't miss Laurence Harvey's nightmare about a human chess board.
Columbo Collector's Edition: Double Shock : **** Great comedy scenes between Peter Falk and Jeanette Nolan and Columbo as a chief cook in Martin Landau's TV show.
A DVD box set which should already be in your library.
columbo, the greatest.......2007-05-13
to me, columbo has always been the only detective show that I liked. in his apparent absent minded way he could solve any case. If you have never seen one of his shows, do it now. thru amazon you can get all seven complete seasons....don't delay!
Outstanding TV drama, please don't pass it up.......2007-03-26
In a plea for the release on DVD of the Banacek series I wrote in an earlier review: "Over the years there have been a number of entertaining series on TV. But, as one looks back, it is clear that only a few TV series -- including Remington Steele and Columbo -- stood out sharply from the crowd as both unique in concept and very well done." Columbo was definitely unique in concept and went beyond very well done, it was outstanding. Peter Falk was superb as Columbo and deserved the Emmy awards he received for this role, but each episode was also very well written and directed and the guest stars were consistently outstanding. Quite simply, Columbo was TV drama at its best.
I have all of the Remington Steele DVDs and still hope that the episodes of Banacek will be released soon. Until then there is still Columbo for those, including me, who want superb TV drama on DVD.

Fantastic Job!.......2007-03-30
I bought all seven seasons and could not be happier! They are better than the original in that I don't have to watch commercials and the closed captions are white which make them much easier to read. I'm looking forward to the next releases. I would highly recommend these to everyone as there is no offensive language or overly gruesome scenes. A great big thanks to Universal for this re-release and I hope for more of them.

Ok.......2007-02-07
I bought this for my husband for Christmas who is an ultimate fan of Columbo and I was very dissappointed that this particular season contained episodes that he didn't like much. I would say to make sure you or the person you are gifting to like the shows contained in this collection. I had to send it back.

Fans of Orlando Bloom will get a chance to see the youthful leading man venture into darker territory in this intriguing crime thriller set in the exotic Cayman Islands. Though Bloom is top-billed in Haven (and shares a producing credit), his role--as a lovestruck Briton who falls in love with a local girl (Zoe Saldana), much to her family's consternation--is less of a lead than part of a larger ensemble cast, some of which is involved in another loosely connected storyline about a businessman (Bill Paxton) who has arrived on the islands to escape an FBI investigation. The players (which include Agnes Bruckner as Paxton's daughter, Bobby Cannavale, and Stephen Dillane) handle the neo-noirish material well, and director Frank E. Flowers makes excellent use of the exotic locations, though a connection between the stories could have been more clearly struck beyond thematic implications of the corruption of natural beauty. The DVD offers full-screen and widescreen versions, as well as a making-of featurette. -- Paul Gaita
Description
From the makers of Crash comes this electrifying thriller with an all-star cast. On the idyllic shores of the Cayman Islands, Shy (Bloom) and Andrea (Saldana) share a secret her parents can never know Â- they are in love. But a night of passion leads to their discovery and a devastating act of vengeance by Andrea's brother (Mackie). Meanwhile, a shady American businessman (Paxton) has fled with his daughter to the Islands to avoid federal prosecution, only to be drawn into a dangerous web of deceit. As lives intersect and truths are revealed, a chain reaction of violence is set in motion that will determine whether love can survive the fall of paradise.

If you are looking for a glimps of the Cayman Islands, this is not it!.......2007-04-25
I just want averyone to know that were this movie was filmed in the Cayman Islands and directed by local Frank E. Flowers, that the storyline is completly fictitious. Being a Caymanian myself I am very proud of him for his acheivement in film, but I want people to know that this is no indication of the lifestyle of the people of the Cayman Islands.
Where we are not 100% crime and drug free, please do not think that you can just walk into a club or party and see people snorting cocaine and smoking a joint...it's just not real!
Overall I liked the stories, but as a local i was somewhat offended by the way some people will look at it.
Mixed Feelings..........2007-03-31
I bought "Haven" when it came out and watched it the same day. I have had mixed feelings on the movie ever since. It gets 4 stars for originality, believability, and for one of Orlando Bloom's better performances to date.
However, the movie was overloaded with profanity (which doesn't bother me really but might bother some) and the whole "let's see Orlando puke his guts out" scene was perhaps the only turn off (for me because I hate vomiting in movies) that I could come up with.
However, other than that the movie was fantastic and I would certainly recommend it to any fan of Bloom's.
Haven.......2007-03-09
Solid performances by Bill Paxton, Orlando Bloom and Zoe Saldana. This movie gives you a glimpse of Paradise you don't see very often. It's also nice to see Orlando Bloom in a film other than a period piece and playing a character that's not necessarily a good guy all the time.
Never heard of it, pleasantly suprised.......2007-03-04
Poweful movie that kept you drawn in. I really was not expecting much from this but really enjoyed it. A great breath of fresh air. If you want something a little different and kind of gtitty check this out.
O my God. That has to be the best movie I've seen in a long time........2007-03-04
What is wrong with all the people leaving these bad reviews. I'm not a big fan of any of the cast members in the film and was not expecting much after all of the critisizm that I have been hearing about the movie. It was a very pleasant surprise to see that this movie was FANTASTIC!!!!!
It's to bad that it did not make it to the masses. It really deserves a ton of awards. I am a big movie going and love the big special effects and all that jazz, but this movie didn't need any of that. It had me captivated from beginning to end. I stood up on my couch at the end and applauded the ending. Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fantastic!!!!!!!!!
O my God!!!!! Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was very pleased with how easy it was to find and order things on Amazon. My order was delivered on time from Amazon. The DVD that I ordered was given as a gift and the child loves it. I have used Amazon in the passed and I will continue to order.
A decent ninties movie.......2007-01-31
This is and old movie that has been around for a long time in it's theatrical form. This movie was released in theratical real form all the way back in 1993 when I was about seven years old. However for reason I do not know it took about eight years after it was first released before it was again reformated again and released in VHS format in early 2001. A word of warn even though this movie got a G rating it has some parts in it that might be to intense for kids under the age of 7. This movie is about a group of animals that live in a place called Dapplewood. The movie start off nice but then things get dark. After the young animals walk on to the road a young Hedhog named russel survive be run over my a car luckely the cars wells don't touch him. Shortly after world a chemical truck drive down the road. Pops its tire and piece of glass from a broken bottle. The truck flips over and a deadly gas is released into the woods. The old bager Cornelius sensing something is wrong. He returns to there home to find half the forrest dead. The young badger Micheal runs in to see here family. Machiel parents lay at there table dead by the gas. The young mouse Abigal draggs the young unconcus Michel out of the burrow. Now the life of the beloved michel hangs by a friend. Here three friends Russel the Hedge Hog, Abigal the mouse and you Edgar the mole must make a heroic quest to save micheal from certain death. Will they succed or will Michael like here parent's be lost forever. This movie has some decent musical numbers but it was not as intense as some of the movies that came before it. If you like this for those of you ages ten or older I also recommend Secret of Nimh 1 and 2 and the two Furnegally movies.
Childhood wonders regained........2007-01-05
My grand daughter and I watched this twice a week for months when she was 4 or 5. Our reunion with Once Upon a Forest was cause for celebration, and also for wonderment, as we saw it with older eyes, and wondered even at ourselves, who we could have been "way back then."
Thanks for having it available. Kenny
Forest Critters.......2006-07-11
This movie is like Secret of NIMH with a children's twist. It's full of comedy, adventure, and friendship. This movie is entertaining to children as well as informative for parents. This is absolutely a great movie.
"Once Upon A Forest": Guaranteed To Make Your Children Cry.......2006-07-10
I like how most of these reviews mention the fact that Michelle goes into the toxic gas-filled house and "finds her parents". They conveniently forgot to mention that, when she goes in and "finds her parents", she sees them with their heads down on the kitchen table DEAD. It's dark and gloomy inside, and they're DEAD.
I mean, yeah, this movie has a good message about being environmentally conscious (and the other parents emerge at the end alive), but they totally downplay the emotional trauma that Michelle probably endured when walking in to find her own parents dead from toxic fumes, not to mention the fear that the other animals felt when thinking that they had all lost their parents. How is a young child supposed to watch this and interpret that scene? Are we just assuming that they're too young to understand or "get it"? And, if one would answer that previous question with a "No", then why would we purposely want to subject them to such a depressing theme in the first place?
And do we really need such an extreme to get the point across? The answer is no -- Ferngully made a much stronger point about saving the environment, and even that annoying bat didn't die in the process.
The bottom line is, this children's movie is really depressing. The major problem here is the fact that a young character clearly walks into her house to find her dead parents (whether you want your kids to watch that or not is up to you). Yes, The Lion King showed Simba cuddling his dead father, BUT the difference here is that the mice are living in a "domestic" environment, much similar to humans. In other words, the Lion King is more primitive, whereas these little furlings go to school, wear clothes, act like children, have homes with kitchens and mothers that wear aprons. It hits a little closer to home, don't you think?
Aside from that, it is, for the most part, pretty formulaic and typical of the genre. So, if you don't want your children to be exposed to as mature a theme as the death of family, there are plenty of other movies to choose from.

Straight from the set-'em-up and knock-'em-down school of teen-horror filmmaking, Stay Alive gives literal meaning to the parental lament, "Those games will kill you someday." Not that you'll find any parents in this gimmicky thriller set in New Orleans; they're conspicuously absent when Hutch (Jon Foster) and his hardcore gamer pals discover "Stay Alive," a mysterious next-generation computer game that has a nasty way of precipitating mayhem, horror, and death. If your character dies in the game, you're doomed to die in identically grisly fashion in real life. So, just don't play the game, right? WRONG. This being a teen horror flick with a screenplay that makes no sense whatsoever, the gamer pals (including victim #2, Hutch's boss, played with game-addicted fervor by Adam Goldberg) obsessively investigate the game and its creepy Ring-like origins in the 17th century murder spree of a woman known as "The Blood Countess." Because movies like this are best viewed on a steady diet of Pop Tarts and Ritalin, Jimmi Simpson earns top honors as the gamer pal with the creepiest behavior, and Malcolm in the Middle fans will enjoy the presence of Frankie Muniz as a gamer geek whose primary fashion statement consists of grimy T-shirts and green plastic poker-visors. While not nearly as fun or clever as the Final Destination movies, Stay Alive delivers a few good deaths while blatantly stealing most of its horror highlights from Ju-On and other Japanese horror hits. It's junk from start to finish, but its target audience of mallrats and gamers (especially those with attention deficit disorder, which helps to ignore the plot holes) won't mind a bit.--Jeff Shannon
Description
The blood runs deep in this extended director's cut of STAY ALIVE, the mind-bending thriller about a killer video game. The real world and the game world gruesomely collide when a group of friends play STAY ALIVE, a mysterious underground videogame that kills the gamer whose character dies in play. In a death-defying race against time, the survivors must solve the mystery of the game while desperately trying to stay alive. More spine-chilling gore and action, plus all-new never-before-seen material -- including a new character and subplot -- push this version way over the edge of what could be seen in theaters.
Customer Reviews:
This was a good horror flick.......2007-06-30
I liked this horror flick because it was a different kind of story. It was a story of some people getting together and playing the same game of a "ghost that was called back from the dead" only to realize that the ghost was looking for revenge to anyone that encounters it within the game. If you would "die" in the game, you would die in real life of the same circumstances. It was a good horror flick and did keep me interested through out the movie. I do highly recommend this movie to anyone that is a horror fan and likes a "different" story.
Why Not Just Destroy the Game.......2007-06-24
Stay Alive has an interesting premise and a good looking cast. The problem is that the execution (no real pun intended) is horrible. This was the last film made in New Orleans pre Katrina so I had some interest in seeing it. I must say that the City is quite possibly the best character in the film.
Hutch (Jon Foster) is an avid videogamer who inherits a prototype game from a recently deceased friend. After playing the game with a group of friends they begin to die in the way they were killed in the game. On a mission to find out how to stop the deaths the legend of the Blood Countess is revealed by an author who sounds amazingly like Elmer Fudd. What follows is standard slasher fare with the obigatory jerky girls of Asian horror thrown in for good measure.
The film looks terribly dark through most of the film and the sound design is not the best that I've heard on a new film. Add to this a weak storyline and too perfect characters and you get a film that it is better to stay away from.
Not recommended.
An OK horror flick........2007-06-09
Major points to the creators of this film for creating a horror movie that is different from the rest of the movies in its' genre (in terms of the video game aspect). That being said, this movie could be much better as it pulls ideas from many other horror movies.
So what's to like about this movie? As I said above, it's different. A group of kids must stay alive by playing a video game that controls how they die. As far as keeping my interest, it did a fair job of doing so.
What's not to like? I would have liked for the creators to have more of the actual video game in the movie. If these kids are literally trying to stay alive by playing a video game, you would think that they would show more of the actual video game to let the audience see what is going on. Also, the characters are nothing to be excited about. In general, "scary" movies" contain likeable characters so that you feel some sort of emotion when something bad happens to them. This creates a more intense movie. Unfortunately, Stay Alive's characters are incredibly unlikeable. Furthermore, if you've seen any scary movie, you'll know what's going to happen in this movie. It's very predictable.
My verdict? 3/5 stars. It's an ok movie. Nothing special. The flaws I mentioned above ruined what could have possibly been a great movie. If you really want to see this movie, I suggest renting it rather than buying it.
Some will watch it more than once.......2007-05-28
I don't know why all the negative reviews for this movie. I watched it a number of times and had fun with it. I enjoyed the characters and the way they were depicted. Rip Off of other films? Hey, in today's (especially horror)movies, what isn't? The idea is to make the next one better than the others or just as darn good. I thought Stay Alive did that.
I give it four stars for it's entertainment value, but that's just me.
Not your average horror flick........2007-05-01
I'm sure most people interested in this movie have seen the trailer at the least, which tells you most of the story right there. Dude gets a killer video game, literally, and wants to share with friends. It's interesting, the graphics decent, the acting not bad. Through most of it, I'm thinking to myself, 'It's Doogie Howser turned techno geek'. As my daughter and I watched it, I kept waiting for Sophia Bush to get 'bumped off'. While some pople think it's cliche, I thought it was a bit more innovative than that. The whole set up, of it being a killer video game, while reaching into fantasy, was actually done quite well. There isn't an overabundance of 'hack and slash' like the Jason or Freddy movies, it is somewhat unique. It's not a movie for everyone, but it is worth seeing at least once if you are into special effects and graphics. It isn't nearly as cheesy as most of the garbage that's been getting onto the sci-fi channel. I don't know if I can take another really horrible sci-fi thriller starring Casper Van Dien...Someone save us from that crappolla!!

Michelle Pfeiffer's husband, television producer David E. Kelley (Ally McBeal), is partially responsible for this entertaining tearjerker about a widower (Peter Gallagher) who can't let go of his late wife and whose relationship with his adolescent daughter (Claire Danes) is stalled as a result. Invited for a weekend at the beach by his worried sister-in-law (Kathy Baker), Gallagher's character faces various humiliations (he's been set up to meet a single woman) and fatherly crises (his growing girl is attracted to a local boy). Pfeiffer plays the ghost of the dead woman and Danes is terrific, but it's Gallagher who gets a rare opportunity to carry the ball for an entire feature, and he does it very well. Michael Pressman directed what is, in the end, a very nice movie. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Forsake your dearly departed or you'll be sorry.......2005-10-08
B Grade movie, really poor script.
Bulk of movie is boring, superficial, stereotypical.
Real purpose of movie is Baptist condemnation of the supernatural.
Story line.
The wife of a couple deeply in love dies in a boating accident during a beachhouse visit. The husband feels a deep loss for two years during which he is frequently visited by the ghost of the wife.
On the second anniversary of the accident relatives and friends gather at the beachhouse and push the husband to come to grips with his grief and refocus his energy to move on with his life.
Overtones.
The leading man is depicted as unstable, self-centered, reckless, irresponsible, and fantasy-prone.before and during the two year period. When revealed to the those assembled, the spirit contact with his wife is universally condemned. His "giving up the ghost" is seen as a great relief and the first sign of maturity he has displayed in his life.
The daughter has dream sequence with the mother in which the mother coaxes her into a head-on crash with a car.leaving her frightened and distraught.
Media Messages.
The film illustrates the creation and reinforcement of a cultural taboo.
1. Spirit contact is dangerous, selfish, and emotionally unhealthy.
2. The personal grieving journey of another should be co-opted by peers.
3. Condemnation is the only acceptable response to spirit contact. There should be no expression of curiosity or investigation like "What did she look like?" "What kinds of things did she say?"
4. Messages from loved ones in dreams should not be trusted.
In short the movie creates a set of automatic responses all of which mitigate against a common sense acceptance and appreciation of the value of spirit contact with loved ones..
In life our conduct is about building bonds of love and trust with those around us. In passing over these ties endure and can be building blocks for a link to the beyond. When William Blake's brother passed, he appeared and taught the skill engraving thus providing humanity for centuries thereafter with icons known to all.
Many near-death experiencers have wisely learned that they must keep their wisdom to themselves. The inner teachings are sacred and must not be diluted and defiled by small minds. The same is true for after-death communications largely because of media images that create a cultural storyline like that in this film.
To Gillian on her 37th Birthday.......2005-09-07
An easy to watch drama (with some comedy) that is sweet but thankfully not the "over the top sweet" these kinds of movies often become. It's a simple engaging story that is very easy to relate to since the movie tackled subjects like loneliness, moving on, and connections in an amusing and ultimately heartwarming way.
Peter Gallagher stars as David who after 2 years of his wife's death Gillian (played by the gorgeous Michelle Pfeiffer) due to a boating accident still cannot seem to accept the fact that she's gone. In fact when no one is watching he still interacts with her dead wife like she was still alive. That causes a conflict with his daughter who was having a hard time dealing with her mom's death because her father doesn't seem to acknowledge that her wife is already dead. Kathy Baker played Gillian's sister who wants to take her daughter since she doesn't think that David was capable of raising his daughter.
Peter Gallagher gave a great performance. He gets to butcher the song "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing", compete with a nine year old in building a sand castle contest, and he gets to play the heartbroken man who was so in love with his wife he doesn't want to let go. It was a great part for him. Claire Danes once again showed her sensitivity as an actress as she realistically portrayed the aches of her character. Michelle Pfeiffer in a semi cameo role was luminous, in the few scenes she was in she lights up the screen like a goddess.
Towards the end of the movie, the supposedly rational Kathy Baker and Bruce Altman after giving lectures on practicality, responsibility etc. and how talking to your dead wife is silly, were both secretly jealous that they don't have that kind of passion for each other.
It's those kinds of moment that elevate this film into just another romance movie.
Grade: B+
Love and Loss-The most powerful emotions.......2005-04-28
This is a fantastic film, from the writing to directing to the score to the acting. Peter Gallagher is superb in conveying the torment and guilt felt by a widowed husband. This is a situation that occurs all over the world all the time-losing a loved one is probably the most trying event that any person can ever go through. It's perfectly paced. David Kelley is such a great writer, it's just a joy to let him take you on this ride.
People compare this film to the play too much. They're completely different, theater is much more dialogue, film much more visual. I read the play after seeing the movie first, and although I'm always tainted by what I see first, I still feel the film is better. The characters aren't shallow in the film-they're just what's needed for how many of them there are.
I can't imagine what it's like to lose someone you love. I'm sure I will someday, but after watching this film you'll see how it can drive someone nearly mad trying to move on with their lives. A beautiful achievement.
He knows she's dead.......2004-09-28
Here's the thing about this movie: He knows she's dead. A lot of the other reviewers here seem to forget that he acknowledges she's dead but that doesn't matter. She is dead but not gone. For some people, that statement sounds like some kind of sacchrine line to calm children. Sometimes it's the truth, though, and that's what this movie is about.
The movie does take itself seriously, but the subject IS serious. This is a solid movie, it's not a great film. Taking yourself seriously is not the same as claiming greatness. David Kelly is a capable director and the cast has chemistry and participate in the telling of a good story. That's it. It's a good story, and a fine film.
Great Subject - Medeocre Exicution.......2004-07-11
If you don't analyze this movie, it's great. But if you do, you realize that it's not more than a series of emotional triggers. It is one of my favorite movies because I can relate to some of the subject matter, but if you do analyze it, you can quickly see that the reason the story doesn't flow very well is because they were trying to hard to strike such a wide variety of emotional chords, the story-telling suffered and became shallow.
If you want to see a good emotional drama that will have some appeal to just about everyone, this is the movie for you. If you are going to analize it, you'll be dissapointed.
It's a great story and has a great cast, but something is missing. That said, if you just want some emotional heroin, watch this movie.

Original Sin belongs in the "so bad it's good" category of languid potboilers, offering enough nudity, sexual chemistry, and far-fetched plotting to make it an enjoyable lazy-day diversion. Based on Cornell Woolrich's novel Waltz into Darkness (previous filmed by François Truffaut as Mississippi Mermaid) and set in turn-of-the-century Cuba, the film traces a tailspin of amorous obsession when coffee plantation owner Luis (Antonio Banderas) discovers that his American mail-order bride (Angelina Jolie) is not the plain wife he'd expected, but a beautiful, scheming thief who's after his fortune. The movie asserts that love is truly blind, but absurd twists of plot make Luis appear more stupid than passionate. Writer-director Michael Cristofer fared better with Jolie in Gia; here, he's made another good-looking film about beautiful people, but its plot just can't be taken seriously. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Excellent!.......2007-05-13
I had been searching for the Original Sin DVD for a number of years. I had seen it once when I was very young, and it wasn't available in the UK. It may not be a life changing movie, but I found it very enjoyable to watch. Jolie and Banderas work very well together. A lot better than you'd think.
Definitely one to buy!
Passion of Mind entertwined with Passionate Bodies.......2007-02-15
The film is well titled and is full of intrigue and mis-direction, yet it always returns to its central theme of over arching sexuality and attractiveness.
Better than expected.......2007-02-13
I had seen the rated version of this movie, but bought the unrated version instead. Great Movie...!! Rated or not. Worth the watch. Angelina Jolie is wonderful in this movie. And Antonino Banderas-its always a pleasure to watch him.
Sexy afternoon thriller.......2007-01-25
Please don't buy this film if you are a super film critic and wish to tear apart the weaker aspects of Original Sin. Buy this film if you love love and are fans of Antonio Bandaras and Angelina Jolie. It was quite a strech for these two blockbuster actors to do such intimatly nude scenes together, I have never seen either do nudity. They were beautiful together and sizzled the screen with their bedroom and tub love making. It was definatly an afternoon turn on to see these two great actors make love in such a realistic fashion it made me blush. Thomas Jane added more to the film with his bad boy good looks, these three actors were made to take their clothes off, they all had such awesome bodies, it was art on the screen. The plot was set in Havana, and shot in Mexico and you could really get a feel for the Spanish influence Antonio wore elegant panama suits and the wedding scene all the people wore beautiful panama draped white suits it really made you feel you were in Cuba, the shots of the cuban country side were rich with sensual colors and mexican people and planations were beautiful. The plot had many interesting twists to keep you intrigued. When I saw this movie I was extrmemly surprise that it didn't get a better box office review, but I am the kind of person that doesn't always like what everybody else does and this is one film I really loved.
Original Angelina.......2006-09-11
I am really glad that I got the unrated version of this movie. It was worth the extra cost. I would put this at the top of my favorite Angelina Jolie movies list.

Heavy Traffic is writer-director Ralph Bakshi's follow-up to Fritz the Cat, so if you're looking for a little something to watch with the kids, you might want to search elsewhere. It's an odd little movie, one that seems to both condemn and celebrate depravity at the same time. The hero is Michael, an artist who still lives with his battling parents. Michael is far too sensitive for the cruel city, though he sure seems to draw an awful lot of pictures of it. Michael hooks up with cool bartender Carole and the two of them set off to... well, they plan to do something. More engaging than the story are Bakshi's visual techniques, which include blending animated and live-action sequences and layering old film clips into cartoon backgrounds. Though interesting as a piece of animation, Heavy Traffic is difficult to recommend. There is a running thread of misogyny that makes the film off-putting, to say the least. Yes, all of the characters are unpleasant and yes, most of the violence is over-the-top enough to make a case for it being comic. It is the constant, casual misogyny that's unsettling--at one point Michael backhands Carole across the face and everyone, including Carole, seems to be fine with that. Keep an ear out for Jamie Farr and watch it for the animation, not the plot. --Ali Davis
Description
"Heavy images, crazy violence, insanity verging on insecurity and brilliance" (Films & Filming)! Heavy Traffic, the second feature from writer/director Ralph Bakshi (Fritz the Cat), combines a quick-edit pace, a frenetic story line and an array of eye-popping animation and live-action styles. "Powerful, raw and valid" (Los Angeles Times), this "remarkable blend" of filmic styles is a "hypnotic, life-giving experience" (The Hollywood Reporter)! Michael, a young artist who lives with his neurotic mother and two-timing father, escapes the absurd and often ugly side of life on New York's tough streets by satirizing its rich yet wacky characters in wildly entertaining cartoons. From the gruff homeless and wisecracking prostitutes to gun-toting gangsters and corrupt cops, Michael's world becomes an outlandish kaleidoscope of shocking images and horrifying events that are either a testament of his wild imagination or a reminder of the strangeness of reality.
Customer Reviews:
A little bit o' personal history..........2006-11-07
Heavy Traffic will likely never receive the attention or respect it deserves as a piece of honest to goodness Americana. Like most of Ralph Bakshi's most personal work, it is rough hewn, obscene (though never pornogaphic) outrageous and damn honest. Along with Coonskin and Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic is about life in the 60's (in fact, taken together these three films form a kind of animated triptych). All three films are about revolution of one kind or another, personal or social, contain plenty of poetry, both visual and narrative and are more about life as we know it then the fantasy of life as we might wish it to be, which seems to be the standard for most animation today. Let's hope that eventually Ralph will get his due as a pioneer of animation.
Brutal, sad, depressing, violent, happy....just like life..........2006-09-13
This is another great film by Mr. Ralph Bakshi, one of the most unheralded filmmakers of his era. I don't think he's ever gotten the respect he deserves as an artist, because all of his film were animated or were animated with some live material. This is his darkest film, a surreal, sad, brutally funny, politically incorrect film about the loner Michael (who may be based on Bakshi himself) and his world. His world is bleak and scary, yet, he somehow finds meaning through his art. Some have called the film racist, misogynistic, vulgar, and trash. It isn't any of those things. Bakshi's work has always brought on controversy, especially this film, and the ones that preceded it and followed it, Fritz the Cat and Coonskin. This is a companion piece to those films, almost an unofficial trilogy. This film was also X rated when it came out, so that naturally gave it notoriety (it was later re-rated R). It's a shame they don't make films like this anymore. Bakshi is a genius. He is not only a great animator, but a great filmmaker/director.
Get out of your Ghetto.......2005-09-13
Breathtaking. Get past your own discomfort with relating to racial sterotypes and realize that this film is genius. A love story at heart, and perhaps one of the most profoundly honest and insightful films to date, Heavy Traffic broke the barriers of 'political correctness' before the people who coined that term were even born. If nothing else consider what is being said about settling for the familiar and not venturing outside of your personal neighborhood. Awe inspiring, Ralph Bakshi should be canonized.
Highest Quality Surrealistic Piece.......2005-07-08
What is to be highlighted: The highest quality of this truly classic surrealistic piece. I take it as a qualifying American answer to such European surrealistic classics as Luis Bunuel's "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie." Each absurd of our life, pictured there, is blown-up to a quite visible and sensible proportion. It is my opinion, that "Heavy Traffic" even surpasses "Fritz the Cat," regarding such qualities as range and depth of depicted ugliness of the "dark side" of human nature.
Also important is than not everybody appreciates surrealism. Therefore, this item is not for everyone, and especially is unsuitable for not mature audience (because of quite credible quality of certain graphic scenes).
I find as no surprise that some of the most notorious faces from "Heavy Traffic" can be spotted in recent times in many places, take "The Simpsons" as example.
Not your average cartoon!.......2005-01-13
This movie is strange. I love the animation especially from the 1970s ERA. This movie is hillarious. Don't expect to know what's going on. This isnt about the life of some celebrity. The Writer had just drew something up off his mind and posted on the big screen. And Yes, it's funny.
