The title is a mouthful, but Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story hits the winner's circle as a warm and inspiring family film. Ben Crane (Kurt Russell) is a Kentucky horse trainer who watches in horror as a championship filly breaks its leg during a practice run. Ordinarily that means curtains, but today Ben's daughter, Cale (Dakota Fanning), is at the track, and Ben impulsively buys the horse and loses his job in one fell swoop. The rehabilitation process is almost too much for a farm that's already struggling to survive in a modern economy, but the horse turns out to be a much-needed salve to the nearly broken family, including Ben's wife (Elisabeth Shue) and father (Kris Kristofferson). The cast is excellent, especially Fanning (who at age 11 has become a major star and was branded by Entertainment Weekly as the most powerful actress in Hollywood), and the film is well-paced by director-writer John Gatins and beautifully shot by cinematographer Fred Murphy. Surely the ultimate fate of the horse and the family won't surprise anyone, but young girls who love horses often don't need a surprise ending. They need a reason to cheer, and Dreamer delivers all the way. (Ages 6 and older: moments of horse peril) --David Horiuchi

for the horse lover.......2007-07-04
Bought this DVD for my daughter for Christmas and she loves it. She is an avid horse lover and we also bought the Dreamer plush backpack. Made a great gift and the story is heartwarming.
Fabulous movie.......2007-05-10
We loved it. Great movie for all ages, but especially for anyone who loves horses.
"The Best of the Best".......2007-04-28
Dreamer is an excellent movie because it really tells a great story and it really happened. The mean guy in dreamer had no right to make her break her leg. all that really was, was abusing animals.
I'd give it 10 stars if I could........2007-03-31
The perfect movie, with the perfect cast, perfect direction, perfect music, perfect cinematgraphy. Everytime I watch this movie it just gets better. For me personally, this is one of the best movies I have ever seen.
DAKOTA SHINES IN GREAT FAMILY FILM.......2007-03-20
DREAMER is one of those wonderful, feel-good movies, all too rare in today's Hollywood of sex, drugs and violence. The based-on-a-true story of a trainer (Kurt Russell), who buys a horse with a broken leg and brings it back to racing condition, is well-acted all around and has a tight script. The trainer's daughter (Dakota Fanning) befriends the horse and becomes involved in its recovery and ultimate entry into a Breeder's Cup race. Dakota Fanning is amazing in this role as both a sweet and tough-minded child. She demostrates the acting ability of someone twice her age. DREAMER is a fine show for the whole family, entertaining while giving inspiration and painlessly teaching positive values in the process. A must see.

Originally released in 1984, the second Urusei Yatsura feature offers characters created by Rumiko Takahashi (Ranma 1/2) and a screenplay and direction by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell). As the perpetually lecherous Ataru and his friends prepare for a carnival at Tomobiki High School, they gradually realize the days are literally repeating themselves. Any effort to break the pattern dumps them back where they started. They later discover their town has been reduced to a circle of land a few miles across, poised on the back of a gigantic sea turtle--a reference to "Urushima Taro," a Japanese Rip Van Winkle story. Takahashi and Oshii weave elements from other Japanese folk tales into their science fiction adventure. Although she's described as an alien princess, Lum has many of the attributes of an oni (demon), including horns, the ability to fly, and a tiger-skin costume (although hers is a bikini). The character designs reflect an interesting moment in animation history, when the influence of Western TV shows was giving way to the familiar anime style. Lum has large eyes and long viridian green tresses, but Ataru and his pals sport more Caucasian-looking hair and features. Unfortunately, the good-natured story runs out of steam after about an hour, and the film falters to a conclusion in an annoying series of false endings. Unrated; suitable for ages 12 and up: minor nudity, profanity, and cartoon violence. --Charles Solomon

A Beautiful Anime: A World Of Reality and Fantasy!.......2007-04-23
I am a late comer to anime. Yes, I own a few, which are some of the better known anime. One in particular that I was really impressed with was this anime, "Urusei Yatsura" aka: "Beautiful Dreamer" Amazing that an anime as old as this one [1984 release] has been able to hold up to time so well too. I first saw this anime back in 1990, but did not purchase it until 2004. There have been some very good reviews of this film, and it is deserving of its high praise. I have seen many anime films, some I like, some are okay, while others, such as this film are a real treat and worth adding to ones collection. As I stated in the beginning, I am relatively new to anime. I have seen several, but not a lot. This one belongs in your collection whether or not you are a fan of anime. It's really that good!
Moreover, this is one anime that I would have loved to have seen on the big screen in a good theatre. I saw the film in a cheesy dive that did not have the best of sound equipment or subtitles. [Many of the subtitles were difficult to read]. I understand that this film is the second of part of a six film collection. Unfortunately, I have yet to see the others in the series. However, this one is great even if there were no others in the series. I will have to seek out the others some time. I found the anime to be very funny and entertaining, yet also very philosophical too. I do not wish to rehash what had already been said by many reviewers, and more importantly, I do not wish to spoil this film for those who have not had the chance to view it yet. However, the films story centers on reality and dreams. What is real? And more importantly; What is love? The film starts off with the changing of the world, where events seem to repeat themselves: And eventually result with disappearing people, streets and the changing of reality itself. But what is reality?
I have to admit, that when I first saw the film I did not understand some of the film; with both reality and fantasy blurred, and I had to view it again to catch some of the films meaning. Therefore, it was a real treat to finally purchase this film a few years ago. [repeated viewings are necessary]. And I never tire of the repeat reviewing. Also, one more thing, the musical score in the film is great. It seems to go with the film. Also, do not let the age of the film deter you from purchasing [or renting the film] as the animation is just terrific. I highly recommend this film to all viewers. It is well worth purchasing, and if you are not sure, then at least rent the film. You will not be disapointed. I know I was not when I first saw the film, and when I eventually purchased it. Highly recommended!
amazing.......2007-03-05
My friend first saw this film back in '98 when Sci-Fi channel aired it on their "Saturday Anime" programing block; for two weeks he could not stop yammering on about it. Four years later he picked up this DVD and called me over to watch it. I had seen some of the TV series before, but Movie 2 amazed me. It captures all the slapstick elements of the show, but they flow with in the context of a deep plot where the same day repeats over and over, much like the film Groundhog Day. As clues begin to surface that might shed some light on the strange occurances, people begin to disappear.
This film is probably the most popular title in the UY universe and for good reason. With the exception of a few characters, a viewer can jump in totally ignorant to the prior portions of the series. Also, it has a nice balance to the light hearted antics of the TV show, but combines that beautifully with the deeper existentialist trappings of the plot. The ending is satisfying, although the home stretch does drag some. All in all its a great buy for some one who has had some experience with anime, but its not a good starting point for the uninitiated.
This DVD is the only title not put out by Animiego, but it was translated for CPM by the same team, so the continuity and translation is exicelent. This also makes it the only one that is dubbed. its only in fullscreen which might bother some people.
sorry for non-japanese speaker fans........2005-12-05
When I watched this movie in 1984. I stayed in the cinema for more than ten hours straight to watch the same movie three or four times that day. (In Japan, once you paid admission you could stay in the cinema until you were physically out of the cinema.) 21.5 years and a few movies later, I have never seen any movie that gives me more goosedumps that this movie. And many animation fans over 30 years old and a few greatest animation creators in Japan agree with me, including original Gundams' creator.
Urusei Yatsura was popular even when it was on the comics, so when it was recreated as TV series in the early 80s, it had got experienced voice actors (dubbers?). And without their unique voices, expressions, dialogs, and strange dialects you are experiencing this movie only by 50%. I watched the english version and I was impressed the work of translation, however unless you know the language, it's difficult to enjoy every aspect of it.
Simply the best.......2005-10-20
It's hard to describe the effect that first seeing this movie had on me the first time I saw it five years ago, but it's something that's sucks with me at the very least.
This was the first bit of UY I ever saw, and I quickly become addicted to the series because of it. The animation is wonderful, the characters are all nifty, and the mysteries that abound in the story are all intriguing. I sometimes find mindself just randomly whistling the music from this movie as it's so...so simply wonderful.
Still Riding the Turtle's Back..............................2005-04-07
I'm not a huge anime fan, but there was some great imagery here. Scenes linger in your mind, touching on some great memory you know you had but can't remember. You will begin to care abou the characters, and yearn to be part of their "perfect world." Dealing with how to cope with a natural (or unnatural, in this case) calamity is what makes this a survivalist's story: the ability to live and have fun doing it. Whoever made this needs to be acredited with making a modern masterpiece, because the experiance of watching Beautiful Dreamer is inspiring and intense. If you close your eyes you can almost see the broken ruin of Tomobiki high. I could see myself under the big sun above Tomobiki, listening to funky 80's japanese pop while taking in a beefbowl with a smile on my face, waving to Lum and Ataru as they tear up the lake in their Kawasakis.

Seventeen-year-old Yume Kikuchi comes to Tokyo for training as a mage and discovers a sophisticated urban world unlike anything she's experienced in the countryside. Requests for the use of Special Powers are regulated by the government and can be granted only by mages who have completed the training program. Yume embodies the old saw "you can take the girl out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the girl." Naive and even prudish, she constantly apologizes to everyone for everything. There's little need for apologies: in the world of Someday Dreamers everyone is nice and all the males are bishonen (beautiful boys), beginning with Yume's languid gay instructor, Masami Oyamada. Aimed at an audience of adolescent girls, Dreamers plays like a very tame cross between Harry Potter and Sailor Moon. (Rated 13 and older: tobacco and alcohol use, mild risqué humor) --Charles Solomon
Customer Reviews:
A pleasant way to spend some time.......2005-09-08
"Someday's Dreamers" is a pleasant coming-of-age story of a young "mage" who is required to spend her summer break training with a certified mage in order to become a certified mage herself. Yume struggles to come to terms with her reasons for becoming a mage and to develop self-confidence in her actions as well as to develop an appreciation for the limits (artificial and otherwise) placed on her powers.
The story has fun with the bureaucracy within which Yume and her trainer work. Yes, she starts her first official day of training watching training videos! Although rules do get broken and bent more often than not, the interesting thing is that the bureaucracy is not portrayed as simply evil-hearted or mindless; at times, it is explained why the rules exist and why they make sense. I especially loved the discussion of ethics for mages.
The series is episodic for the most part. However, the last three episodes create a darker story arc as Yume suffers a crisis of confidence as she faces her final test. On a final note, this series is an homage to the city of Tokyo. Yume comes to the city in confusion and trepidation, but as time passes, she falls in love with the city and its people. Tokyo deserves cast credit: "Tokyo as Itself."
Cute.......2005-07-24
A very very nice anime. No action or violence or anything like that. But just plain cute. The only other anime series that came to mind when I was watching this was "Kokoro Library". And although the storyline and characters are entirely different, it has the same feel of cuteness, as well the difficulties and dilemnas endured by the characters are also on the same level of........ importance?
I recomend all anime fans to watch this series.
Also the boxset looks awesome on the anime shelf ;)
Don't bother........2005-05-23
Though having a few good bits in it for the girls, this series was terrible. Don't bother buying it. It doesn't go anywhere.
Nothing New, but Plenty of Fun.......2004-05-08
"Someday's Dreamers" is the story of Kikuchi Yume, a young girl who comes from her country home to the big city of Tokyo for mage training. Like most anime heroines, Yume has an amazing power sleeping inside her, and an uncanny ability to act with the right intentions at the wrong time.
Before you start drawing connections between "Someday's Dreamers" and "Harry Potter"...don't. Although the wizard-in-training bit is present and accounted for, that's about where the similarities end, and Dreamers doesn't feel or play like some kind of quick cash-in Potter rip-off.
The show itself is fairly light for now. The four episodes on this disc each stand well on their own; each episode involves Yume being faced with a problem and having to solve it, usually through the use of her magic (or Special Power, as it is called in the show.)
Technically, the show is impressive. The animation is clean and bright, and the music is perfectly suited to the chiefly gentle nature of the show. (I would recommend checking into the soundtrack CD, available domestically from Geneon-Pioneer.) Both the English and Japanese voice casts turn in solid performances in their various roles.
On that note, there's some difference between how the subtitles and the dub are presented. Pioneer makes some interesting choices with the subtitles, including leaving names Asian style (e.g. Kikuchi Yume instead of Yume Kikuchi) and leaving honorifics (e.g. -san, -chan, sensei) intact. The subtitle translation also handles "Dreamers"'s use of polite language--and there is a lot of it--in a somewhat literal fashion, creating a translation that can sound a little awkward at times, and may be the slightest bit confusing for viewers unfamiliar with some Japanese expressions of politeness. But it hardly hinders the translation enough to make it unwatchable, and some fans may indeed prefer this style of translating.
The dub feels almost like a nod to convention in the face of the subtitles on this disc; names are flipped (Western-style) and honorifics have been dropped per normal. But as I mentioned, the cast still delivers a perfectly good performance, and whether to watch subbed or dubbed is a matter of preference here.
The actual story construction in Someday's Dreamers will either delight or confound you. The stories here are straightforward, and the relentlessly upbeat nature of the show generally makes it clear that everything will turn out alright. There is, in short, nothing particularly groundbreaking in this show. But the series has such sweetness in the form of its friendly characters (perhaps especially the uber-innocent Yume) that it may well survive on charm alone. (Oh, and maybe it's just me, but I think that pretty series box you can buy with volume one is worth the entire price of admission.)
People out for a thick and dramatic plot should definitely look elsewhere. But people who just want something cute and uplifting to watch have found their ticket.
~
Up there with Miyazaki !!.......2004-01-28
This anime is so good in so many ways I don't know where to start.^_^ The first thing you notice is that the animation is outstanding and very realistic. The character development is excellent and you get emotionally involved with the characters and the plot much more than even in the average good live-action dramatic film.
Yume, the protagonist of the series, is a young mage-in-training. Despite her obviously overwhelming powers, she struggles with insecurity and shyness. We see, however, how Yume's powers come from her intense feelings of love and her concern for others.
Obviously the series is inspired in Studio Ghibli shojo like Kiki's Delivery Service, Whisper of the Heart and Umi ga Kikoeru. And it really does measure up to Studio Ghibli standards. I guess that's the ultimate compliment you could give any anime. ^-^

Some of the wildest action of Extreme Championship Wrestling, an organization that prides itself on being the cutting edge of professional wrestling, is contained in this extravaganza in which men (and even a few women) beat the hell out of each other with chairs, tables, barbed wire, and, you bet, even some wrestling moves. Such ECW luminaries as Rob Van Dam, Mike Awesome, and Tommy Dreamer appear in matches that certainly look far more brutal than the usual wrestling fare found in shows put on by the WWF or WCW. Billed as uncensored, the competitors on this video generally wind up bloody, which isn't too surprising considering how many steel folding chairs go zinging through the air. When Mike Awesome power bombs an opponent through a folding table, the energized crowd packed into the dingy ECW arena gleefully breaks into a resounding chant. The centerpiece of this video is the classic barbed-wire match fought in 1996 between ECW stars Sandman and the Raven. The barbed wire enclosing the ring soon becomes the weapon of choice, and both men are reduced to bleeding messes before several tables get smashed and the loser is the man rendered most senseless. You have been warned, this material isn't for everyone. But those who love ECW will be in chair-shot heaven. --Robert J. McNamara

Crazy Stuff On This Tape.......2006-06-18
After being somewhat disappointed by ECW's debut on the Sci-Fi channel, I popped this old tape in my VCR to see something that wasn't filled with 30 minutes of lame skits.
The first match I saw was Jerry Lynn vs. Rob Van Dam. This is Jerry Lynn's most famous match I'm sure. He takes a nasty fall from the turnbuckle to the floor and lands right on his face, and he's out of it for a little while after that. Still manages to tough it out to put on an outstanding match loaded with unexpected reversals.
Next matchup is Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka. These guys had some of the best matches I've ever seen. Man, they can put on a show. This match was right up there with all their other ones. Tanaka tries a tornado DDT and gets it reversed into a spinebuster right on top of some steel chairs. Ouch. Tanaka superplexes Awesome through a table. Great. Awesome finally ends the match after powerbombing Tanaka from the top rope. Personally, this is my favorite match on the tape.
Next I see Raven fighting the Sandman in a barbed wire match. This is without a doubt one of the most violent matches I've ever seen, but then again, I don't watch Japanese wrestling too much. The Sandman looks pretty fat in this video, but he's definitely as crazy as ever. He throws himself around into tables quite well in this match. It gets my attention as well as the attention of Joey Styles. Both Raven and the Sandman cut themselves to bits. Blood everywhere. Crowd seems to like it. This is as real as wrestling gets right here. It sure ain't pretty, but it's definitely something to see.
Fourth match I see is a tag match and the only guys in the ring I remember are Saturn and Dr. Death. Dr. Death is pretty intense, and Saturn's hefty looking partner is surprisingly athletic. Saturn does an elbow drop from a scaffold and wins. I wonder what Saturn is up to these days.
Last match is a mixed tag match with Shane Douglas and Fancine against Tommy Dreamer and Beulah. This is a fun match to watch. Shane Douglas tries his best to make the crowd mad, and does a good job I think. Beulah does a moonsault and ends up getting the heck beat out of her. I was laughing through this whole darn thing.
Even though ECW was some sinful programming, this tape definitely delivers some excitement. Sometimes I wish wrestlers didn't put themselves through so much, because my enjoyment of the footage depicting their most painful moments makes me feel guilty.
Extreme Action.......2006-05-28
Another compilation of matches from various ECW TV shows & PPV's with an introduction to each match by Joey Styles.
Television Champion Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn - What can be said about their series of matches that hasn't already been said. This match topped their match at the PPV before & what can I say but this was professional wrestling at it's best right along Flair/Steamboat & Angle/Benoit.
(Also available on "Rise & Fall Of ECW")
ECW Champion Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka - Every time these two get together, you see one of the most intense & stiff matches in your life & this was absolutely no exception as this was their greatest match in ECW & will go down as one of the greatest title matches in ECW history. I don't know what else to say here that I haven't said about their previous matches except to expect stiff chair shots, tables breaking, & plenty of power moves.
Barbed Wire Match: ECW Champion Sandman vs. Raven - This match gets overshadowed by the more violent match between Sabu & Funk later on but this was still good here as it was your typical Raven vs. Sandman brawl with the barbed wire shredding clothes. This match is real rare as it was never before released.
Tag Team Champions Balls Mahoney & Spike Dudley vs. Dudley Boyz - This was at the first ECW on TNN taping that wasn't used on the debut show. This was probably their most violent & best encounter as everyone was fighting all thoughout the crowd with plenty of weapons & even double stacked flaming tables that Spike went though. This was the best tag match between these four guys & another match that was never released before.
Eliminators vs. Steve Williams & Terry Gordy - This was a match between one of the best tag teams in wrestling vs. one of the best tag teams in ECW. However once you get past that fact, this match was nothing special past the ending where Perry Saturn did the most dangerous elbow drop in wrestling history.
Sabu vs. Taz - This was dubbed "The Grudge Match Of The Century" as Sabu & Taz had a legit beef with each other dating back to when Sabu was fired from ECW in April '95 & if was perfectly built as they didn't fight each other for over a year leading up to this match as it had a great mix of wrestling from both men along with each incorporating their styles of Sabu's high flyin' & Taz's judo martal arts submission as well. The match itself lived up to the hype eventhough they would top the match later on in ECW.
(Also available on "Barely Legal")
Tommy Dreamer & Beulah vs. Shane Douglas & Francine - This match itself was full of highlights such as Francine having a "wardrobe malfunction" and a fan attacking Douglas with a chair in the crowd. Besides that it was an average but enjoyable matchup.
DVD extras include an Extreme Moments section which includes the match between Chris Benoit & Sabu where Benoit breaks Sabu's neck earning his nickname "The Crippler", Taz suplexing Tommy Dreamer off a balcony though a table, and a New Jack dive off a basketball backboard. There's also a hidden Cactus Jack "anti-hardcore" promo.
Basically, the only flop on this DVD would be the Eliminators vs. Williams & Gordy match (minus Saturn's elbow drop) so I highly recommend this for anyone.
Good Video.......2006-03-12
I get all my ECW from ECW666 Videos. They have every ECW show in its entirety and are authentic, not Vince's version. Check them out at http://ecw666.cjb.net . I get my videos within 3 days of ordering and they have the best prices hands down...
This is not EXTREME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-11
I love ECW but this is average at best.
Match 1 - RVD vs. Jerry Lynn 10/10
This is the best match on the video. An instant classic.
Match 2 - Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka 9/10
A great match between the most underated feud of all time.
Match 3 - Raven vs. Sandman 7/10
A below average match between two ECW legends fails to deliver to the hype it is given by other reviewers at amazon.
Match 4 - The Eliminators vs. Terry Gordy and Dr. Death 3/10
The only good thing in this match is the flying elbow off the scaffold by Saturn.
Match 5 - Tommy Dreamer and Beulah vs. Shane Douglas and Francine 5/10
The only good thing in this match is the "wardrobe malfunction" by, the queen of extreme, francine.
ECW Extreme Evolution.......2005-09-22
Great compilation, I liked all of the matches on here. RVD vs Lynn the same match thats on Rise and Fall Of ECW,wished they included the beginning intros a little more but the difference is that you get the complete ending of the match with Joey Styles handling the replays nicely. Awesome vs Tanaka great rematch from the title win from Anarchy Rulz 99 where Awesome and Tanaka double team Taz then each other, slightly better than average filler match. Raven vs Sandman a fave for hardcore fans, I think this match was not on the VHS? Sandman is real nasty here getting hung up on the barb wire ring ropes, cutting down the wire and wrapping it around himself while Raven fights to untangle his hair half the time. Raven blows a piledriver through a table which results in a tounge lashing from the crowd but gets the win and a can of beer from the crowd, sloppy but entertaining. Dudley's vs Ballz's and Spike, one of the best matches on the disc some classic ECW! Brallfest all around the arena in and out of the crowd then back stage to the consession stands for a tasty snack. Bubba Ray Dudley turns to the camera wipes blood on his face and says "Spike..your blood is my blood..." then the camera guy freaks and cuts away abrubptly. The match ends with spike going through two stacked tables on fire, a better camera angle could have been chosen but it still delivers. Eliminators vs Doctor Death and Bam Bam Gordy. Feels like a filler match but turns out not to be at all, nice to see where Kronus got some of his character gimmics from. Scaffold elbow drop from Perry Saturn rounds out a good and not too long tag match. Taz vs Sabu. Plucked from Barely Legal PPV, a little overhyped but one of the better grudges youll see in ECW. Big main event! Franchise and thong clad Francine vs Tommy Dreamer and Beulah. Gets pretty out of control to say the least, Franchise gets real ruff in the crowd after a fan gets in a chair shot and franchises arm gets caught in the chair. Francine even gets a couple shots on Hat Guy in the front row taking a baking pan from him which she then tries to use on Dreamer. But Dreamer with the eyes in the back of his head routine grabs her and sets her up for a pile driver resulting in the famous nip slip with Joey Styles exclaiming "Did I just see what I think I saw" line. Top it off with decent extras- Benoit breaking Sabu's neck,New Jack doing a big drop through a table, Taz Suplexing Dreamer off the Crows Nest onto two tables and you got a great compilation that lacks some of the real boaring matches that whole PPV'S usually seem to have. Main track runtime 2 Hours and 42 Minutes. Back of the box runtime Approx 171 Minutes. Also who can spot The Rude Boy in the crowd just to the right of the 'Detroit Juggalos' sign.

ROAD TO CONNECTICUT & TELEVISION.......2007-02-04
If you have grown up on watching ONLY wrestling on TV, such as WW, or WCW, then you WILL hate this, as mentioned by the previous reviewer. This is NOT WWF or WCW. This isn't filling the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, or the Pontiac Silverdome with 50,000 screaming fans.
It's also not what this DVD is about, and it's not for the fan of WWF, or WCW. This is independent wrestling, and if you're a fan of what you see on TV each week, then you more than likely think that tons of bodybuilders call Vince McMahon every day and are instantly hired and put on TV. (Although considering some of the talent currently in WW, it's easy to believe that!) Contrary to popular belief, wrestlers don't just call McMahon and are instantly signed to the WWF. It takes years and years of experience to earn a spot on television, and even longer to main event. Some are pushed to the top faster than others based on their charisma and ability, but generally, it takes a while, just as in any other sport or form of entertainment, you have to learn what you do and be good at it.
This is about what fans of wrestling on TV know nothing about. The independent circuit. All across the U.S., there are small independent promotions (independent of WW) that hold shows usually a few times a month in local gyms, nightclubs, bars, etc. This is where the people you see on TV come from. This is where you learn your craft, the art of the promo, and get ring time. This is for people who don't care about if WW calls them or not. They wrestle because they want to wrestle, because they love the sport. Fans are usually as low as 5-8 to highs of 1000-1500. Sometimes, you'll see wrestlers who are in the twilight of their career, or perhaps looking to reinvent themself and their career wrestling on the independent circuit. Every so often, like in the case of the UPW promotion, or NWA Wisconsin (independent home of Ken Kennedy and Little Bastard), you'll find an independent promotion that is looked at more frequently than others, due to the quality of the training received by the wrestlers, and while not an "official" developmental territory, they do often use the fact that several of their wrestlers have gone on to WW as a selling point of their shows.
While sometimes these shows do have local TV access through cable access TV, or if the quality of their videos is good enough, can score a deal to have their shows on a local INDemand, or downloadable. However, most of the time, their shows primarily generate revenue from the live ticket sales, and the sale of merchandise such as DVDs, autographed photos, and t-shirts.
So, if you're looking for the slick, glossy, picture perfect sports-entertainment production values that a billion dollar corporation produces by hiring television executives and professional video production and distribution companies, then don't buy this. You'll hate it. However, if you're a fan of wrestling and not sports-entertainment, and want to see what it's like when you're first starting out as a wrestler, and are more in favour of good wrestling and don't need the slick production values to enjoy your shows, then pick up this DVD, and gain new appreciation for what these talented athletes go through. Then, when you're done, find a local independent promotion, attend one of their shows, and tell them you're a new fan. You'll find the independent wrestlers are usually far more accessible than your favourite WW superstar, and are generally more grateful for your support.
Support your local independent wrestling.

It is what it is........2006-03-11
Usually, when wrestling fans see a DVD collection like this, they think they're in for a treat. The cover to this DVD features one of the hottest commodities in recent pro wrestling history, John Cena, and also boasts that the business' "biggest superstars" are on display in over 4 1/2 hours of nonstop action before they became such huge successes.
Why isn't this flying off the shelves? I mean, WWE has put out several "insider" DVDs about their biggest talent of the past and shown how they rose to the top: The Undertaker, The Road Warriors, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart...the list goes on. Nostalgic wrestling fans eat that stuff up, so why not release a DVD comp with footage of some of today's biggest stars and how they "broke in"? Should be a big success, right?
Sales-wise...not exactly. Entertainment-wise...well, maybe...
The first thing you should look at is the company that put this collection together: XEG (Xtreme Entertainment Group). In case you're not familiar with them, this is the same company that distributes collections like "The Bum Fights Collection", "Backyard Wrestling", "The World's Deadliest Fight Clubs", and various "Girls Gone Wild"-type videos. Ring a bell? Well, if it does, you should also expect the same type of quality in "Road to Glory".
In theory, the product seems pretty solid. It's a collection of past talent from Rick Bassman's developmental wrestling promotion, UPW (Ultimate Pro Wrestling), and quite a few of the faces you'll see are very recognizable. Of course, there's John Cena (going by the ring name "Prototype", and looking a lot more ripped than he is now), but you'll also come across other familiar faces like Horshu (Luther Reigns in WWE), Chris "Masters" Mordetzky, Christopher Daniels, Samoa Joe, and Frankie Kazarian (all popular in the TNA organization), and Heidenreich, to name a few. Many of the guys you'll see here ended up making it as far as the WWE midcard, and some others went on to become independent wrestling legends.
The bulk of the collection is the matches these guys have with each other, but there is also just a bit of footage of the wrestlers practicing their promos (smack talk before a match), working out and rehearsing in the ring, and talking about what UPW is all about, which is developing wrestlers for potential greatness.
Now, you have to keep in mind that since UPW is a developmental organization, the quality of these matches in general is not going to be that great. And that's true; some of the matches are just plain awful to watch, especially if you've been watching WWF/WWE most of your life. The best advice I can offer when considering buying this collection is that you've gotta take it for what it is. This was basically put out there for those wrestling fans who may be curious as to what top players like John Cena were like while they were learning the ropes of pro wrestling. The footage and matches were shot with low-quality cameras, and the "arenas" are high school gyms and nightclubs with maybe a hundred or so people in attendance. The video and sound quality goes up and down, usually while the matches are taking place. You'll be fiddling with your remote quite a bit while you're watching.
The "shining" moments in this collection come mainly with guest appearances from the greats, like Rob Van Dam, the Road Warriors, and Diamond Dallas Page (who, coincidentally, celebrated his 76th birthday the day this DVD collection was released). A few of the matches in here are actually pretty good as well and show some very cool sequences; one particularly memorable is Christopher Daniels and Rob Van Dam in an independent brawl for the ages, despite the ring breaking a couple of minutes into the match.
Bonus features on the 2nd disc include trailers for other XEG products (the trailer for "Backyard Wrestling" is just sick to watch), footage from UPW's "Promo School" (more wrestlers practicing their promos), and a comedy skit called "Bruce Laundree" featuring Heidenreich and ripped karate dude Patrick Nguyen. You'll think it's either hilarious or completely stupid.
(I couldn't decide, although I did laugh at it.)
In a nutshell, this collection does what it set out to do. It doesn't do it that well, but you will indeed get an inside peek at what developmental wrestling organizations are like, and how they can actually produce a superstar or two. Take it for what it's worth, but don't expect much in the way of quality. Caveat emptor.

A thought provoking film, shot on video.......2006-05-24
I learned about this film from my video editing magazine. A new (and I should say talented) director, George Johnson, shoots a feature length movie entirely on consumer video equipment. He does manage to push the video format to the limit with good filming techniques, clever editing and some surprising special effects.
This is a movie about making a movie and, generally speaking, pursuing your dream despite the obvious obstacles. A teenager (Kevin) borrows his grandpa's video camera to shot a "movie" in the woods, with his friends as actors. Kevin wants no violence, drugs, adult language or sex scenes in his movie, but, as the script becomes popular, a producer with money offers him help if Kevin agrees to alter the script. I won't say anything else about the plot, except that I liked the intense dream sequences.
Recommended for teenagers and adults that would like to see something different, a thought provoking film. One more thing: I purchased my DVD copy through the Allegory Pictures web site.
This is one strange flick.......2005-09-07
When I first popped in the DVD, I thought I had accidentally bought a copy of somebody's home video. It looked like something shot with an old full-size VHS camcorder. I was intrigued by this gutsy stunt, but at the same time, hoped it wouldn't last too long. Thankfully, about two minutes into the film, it changed over to a nice, film look. Turns out, the beginning is intended to look bad so that the "film" portion of the movie would look better. Interesting idea, and well executed.
As far as the story goes, I found myself confused, perplexed, laughing, and even a little frightened at times - but consistently intrigued. It was obvious that there was more to the story than initially meets the eye. There was a sub-level story going on, and it was a fun mental excercise trying to put it all together.
The end is absolutely GREAT! I don't think that it is humanly possible to guess how it will wrap up, and it really sends you on your way thinking about life, and what kinds of possibilities it has to offer.
A great story, interestingly told. A rare treat for those who like original stories.
