Salma Hayek makes up for many bad movies with her fierce performance in this sumptuous film. Hayek plays the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, whose tempestuous life with her unfaithful husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), drives the story of Frida. Maverick director Julie Taymor (Titus, the Broadway stage production of The Lion King) pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo's spine to her and Rivera's trip to New York City, where Rivera's political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family. Though the script spends too much time telling us how great Frida's painting is (rather than trusting in the power of the images themselves), Taymor's dynamic energy and Kahlo's forceful personality give Frida genuine emotional impact. The superb cast includes Roger Rees, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas, and Edward Norton. --Bret Fetzer

I could not get into this movie at 1st,but the more i watched it i liked it more and more.if your a salma fan it's good.i expected there to be alot of naked scenes but there were only a few

5 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL!.......2007-05-30

salma hayek is BRILLIANT and julie taymor needs to make more films! absolutely stunningly gorgeous film with vibrant colors. the film may not be in spanish, but the culture is certainly made apparant through the visual aspects of this film. one of my all-time favorites! everyone must own this film! especially those who are fans of the artist herself - frida.

3 out of 5 stars is her art as forgettable as this movie?.......2007-05-12

she painted alot of pictures, and she married a famous artist, and she had a mustache, and theres alot of nice music. the film is vastly less important than it thinks it is; i dont know enough about its subject to determine if thats fair ...

3 out of 5 stars Whitewash.......2007-03-13

Frida is a cinematic whitewash of the real Frida Kahlo who was both physically beautiful and spiritually ugly. She was regarded by many of her fellow artists as being a "despicable cur." This movie presents a sanitized version of Kahlo's life and left out much of what was an oftentimes ugly personal life.

Frida Kahlo was a great artist and a horrible person. This movie fails to present the latter part of her personality and it suffers because of that deficiency.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Yet Pretty Unattractive.......2007-03-06

Frida is a visually attractive, yet over the top glamorization of egocentric, self-righteous artists that just click. Besides the fact that the film tries really hard to come off as artsy, Hayek's acting shows too much effort and the continuously very short sequences have a TV sit-com feel.

Hollywood loves taking stories like these and making lives that are degenerate look like sacrifices for noble causes be it art, politics or love. In the end Kahlo and Rivera were great artists and poor humanitarians, with a penchant for stupidity. From this movie you'd think that's a wonderful thing.

It must be hard to make movies about artists because there are so few that are that good. Pollock, Vincent And Theo, Basquiat, Lust For Life, Modigliani, Surviving Picasso all were enjoyable films in degrees; but they all focused on and romanticized some of the worst aspects of the artists' lives like egotism, womanizing, alcoholism, mental illness, and drug addiction, and rarely show the more vulnerable weakness's that was the cause of the problems. The characters in all those movies just end up seeming like two-dimensional modern cliches of what we expect from artists. Frida is yet another example of that but one of the poorer ones yet.

    5 out of 5 stars Awful.......2007-04-07

This movie is awful, terrible, and has no redeeming value. This is much like the original Reanimator. I loved it! Okay, the acting may have not been Oscar worthy and the plot was kind of stupid, but it had Herbert West up to his experiments again. If you want Gone With the Wind, why even bother reading reviews of this type of film. If you want a camp culture classic with no social value and plenty of gore and pointless shots of the totally unsympathetic heroine's fishnets, this is it! Gotta love it.

2 out of 5 stars A BOMB of a flick except for a few good gore effects.......2007-03-13

This sequel to a horror classic started out ok, but by the middle, none of it mattered anymore, I even got a bit tired of the well done gore effects because I had to sit through scenes of a severed [...] and rat duking it out! The original "ReAnimator" is a great flick to see if you want excellent and original gore effects as well as a creepy storyline, but this sequel just stinks.

3 out of 5 stars The Doctor Is In(sane)... .......2006-06-04

Jeffrey Combs returns once more as Dr. Herbert West, mad scientist and iconic miscreant! This time he's operating from behind bars, using his nefarious expertise to capture the life-force from the prison's rodent population. Of course, things just wouldn't be right if he didn't start re-animating human corpses as well! With the help of the new prison doc, West begins his work on the inmates and the sadistic warden. A nosey (and beautiful) gal reporter snoops about until her curiosity gets her killed. Then, it's Dr. West to the rescue! Lots of gushy gore, drool, and minor nekkidness. Watch for the severed, re-animated male member vs. the zombie rat during the end credits! Eeegads!...

1 out of 5 stars Miserable acting, horrible script, inane directing........2006-01-29

What a mind-numbingly inept end chapter to a series that began with the greatest horror-comedy of all time, The Re-Animator. Continuing in his deluded quest to claim the Re-Animator series for his own, and to convince us that he can direct, producer Brian Yuzna has managed the opposite. Beyond Re-Animator merely confirms what was evident about the Yuzna-directed Bride of Re-Animator, that Yuzna knows nothing about directing actors and story.

As with Dagon, Yuzna seems to have secured financing from Spanish sources for this film. Unfortunately, the problem is that they also tried to force in a mostly Spanish cast. This is a story set in Massachusetts, for crying out loud -- why would the warden of the prison, the reporter coming to cover the story, the guards, and a good 90 per cent of the inmates all have Spanish accents? It wouldn't be as howlingly horrible if these guys could act, but they can't. Simon Andreu as Warden Brando and Elsa Pataky as love interest Laura Olney get the most screentime of anyone in the cast, but their acting is so bad, and their ADR-afflicted lines so glaringly off, that they manage to sink the film every time they open their mouths. Yuzna seems to pick his leading ladies based on their willingness to take off their clothes (witness the gratuitous "nurse nipple" scene in this film, or Fabiana Udenio and Kathleen Kinmont in Bride of Re-Animator), and Pataky makes for one of the most unsympathetic love interests I can remember.

But even Pataky and Andreu pale in incompetence next to that blustery, seething mass of bad acting that is leading man Jason Barry. Based on Yuzna's shoddy history with actors, one might be tempted to blame it on the director, but the fact is that in this film, Jason Barry is incapable of pulling off a single believable moment, basic elementary acting. His every internal and external beat rings false, his dialogue delivery sounds like a cold reading, and even his basic body movements look like amateur theatre. Most high-school students do better than this. Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West, seasoned pro that he is, gamely plays along, but the script puts West's character so far off to the sideline in favour of the vomit-inducing Pataky-Andreu axis that Combs is unable to save this film.

On a strictly technical level, the cinematography looks good, the score is all right (though often too serious-minded for its own good), and the film doesn't look low-budget. But when the "story" is such a mess and the actors so inept, no amount of slick lighting and camera moves can save a film. Yuzna really should stick with producing, because on the Stuart Gordon-directed Dagon, at least there were some good moments. But Beyond Re-Animator is beyond salvaging, possibly the worst film sequel I've ever seen, and way up there in the list of worst films I've ever subjected myself to.

5 out of 5 stars see it if only for the music video.......2006-01-26

Yes, the original Re-Animator and it's sequel, Bride of Re-Animator, are very cheesy and of course Beyond Re-Animator is probably the cheesiest by far, but I still love them! Jeffrey Combs was born to play Dr. Herbert West, forever on the quest of developing a re-animation agent.

We find Dr. West in prison in this chapter, for the atrocities that occurred in the last movie. He doesn't quite fit in with the other cell mates, he is too sophisticated and too strange a man. His dull prison life is soon interrupted when a new doctor, whose sister was killed by one of West's "patients", becomes part of the staff and wants Dr. West to assist him.

Together they assemble a lab and begin to develop the re-animation serum along with trying to perfect a new part of the process which transfers the missing essence of one's soul into the patient- hypothetically making them act more like people and less like zombies. Of course it doesn't quite work and chaos ensues.

Beyond Re-Animator is great fun, especially if you don't take it too seriously. It is easy to root for Dr. Herbert West as he tries once again to successfully re-animate the dead. Jeffrey Combs is brilliant and the prison makes for a great atmosphere. Rats are also featured quite hilariously in the movie, which is personally a favorite little creature of mine. There are a few extras on the DVD, including an awesomely bad music video called something like "Re-Animate You Feet" or "Move Your Dead Bones". If you like bad horror movies then this one is for you.

Notice to all insomniacs: watch this film. You will be cured!!! Seriously, the pace is extremely slow. My wife and I both appreciate slow paced films, especially foreign movies, that gradually reveal sublteties that most other movies do not. While the slow pace of this film produces some rewards, the length of the film (nearly 2 hrs) was not worth the meager rewards of this adaptation of Gabriel-Garcia Marquez's book.

    Description

The Rottweiler was bred to kill. Raised with cruel discipline, trained to terrorize chain-gang prisoners with steel incisors implanted into its jaw, the Rottweiler was allowed to taste the fresh kill of attempted escapees after hunting them down. Imprisoned for a crime he did not commit, Dante managed to escape the prison walls, only to feel the Rottweiler's hungry eyes upon him….

    Customer Reviews:

    1 out of 5 stars Bad dog...*BAM!*.......2006-04-24

"Rottweiler" is terrible. There's no way getting around it. Directing-wise, it REALLY tries to be artsy. There's gratuitous amounts of slow-motion, Rottweiler-vision, and weird angles. To top it off, the story is not told in your typical narrative. It occasionalyl jumps from one point to another. While I wasn't entirely lost as to what was going on, it was just really bizarre for this type of movie. It worked with "Reservoir Dogs" because it was structured and helped the story. Here it's just ridiculous.

The other problem is the Rottweiler "monster" that is dispatched to kill our hero once he escapes from the prison. Domestic pets becoming monsters has always been a tricky matter, because if done wrong they can turn the film into an unintentional comedy. Look at any horror movie that has tried making domestic cats scary and you'll see what I mean. Dogs are easier, and certainly Rottweilers (along with Doberman Pinchers) are notoriously nasty dogs. However, this Rottweiler was not as convincing. First, it has weird patches of fur taped to it, and has more of a look of "Ooh, is that a bone?" than "Must kill." The puppet for close-ups is terrible - what does it look like? Imagine Triumph the Comic Dog without the cigar and with blue eyes. I am not kidding. Whenever I saw it I expected it to say, "What a great script...FOR ME TO POOP ON!"

Another matter I have to discuss is our hero. He gets a lot of innocent people killed in his stupidity. The Rottweiler follows him, and he knows its following him, and doesn't seem to mind the innocent people murdered as a result. Take, for example, the mother and daughter he runs across. He could have told them about the dog, but instead doesn't, getting their two pet dogs killed and their house under attack. Then when the mother fires a rifle and plugs a round into the Rottweiler through the front door. The hero says, "Give me the gun! Trust me!" He then - get this - sticks it through the bullet hole! Any one who has seen a Bugs Bunny cartoon knows this is a no-no. As you might suspect, the Rottweiler grabs the barrel of the gun, pulls it out, and destroys it. What does this result in? The Rottweiler chases them outside and the mother has to sacrifice herself to save her daughter. The daughter gets to watch as the Rottweiler tears her mother to shreds: tears fall down her cheeks, she cries out her mother's name as blood drips onto her face...and all because the guy said, "Trust me!" when the mother seemed perfectly capable handling the rifle.

    Our hero, ladies and gentlemen...

So do not see it. Go to your adoption center and get a real dog. Not a Rottweiler, get a Great Dane. They're as faithful as German Shepherds, but without the separation anxiety.

    2 out of 5 stars Woof!!.......2006-02-19

"Rottweiler" is just plain bad. It features plenty of no-name actors and actresses and a cyborg mutt with a really bad attitude. It takes place in the near future somewhere in Spain. As we watch the story unfold, we learn that our hero, Dante, has been thrown into a futuristic prison for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He and his girlfriend, Ula, are playing a deadly game known as "Infiltration," in which rich kids scamper across the world and try to get away with big capers. Well, their luck runs out in Spain, and Ula is forced to do a deed to get them released from prison. Naturally, things don't go quite as planned and Dante is left to attempt an escape with a cellmate. The prison's guards sick "Rottweiler" on them and he quickly dispatches Dante's mate. Dante then runs off into the wilderness only to be captured a few days later. He escapes again, but does so by killing the rottweiler's owner. Not a good idea.

The cyborg pooch goes ballistic, killing any and everything in sight while he attempts to catch Dante and exact his revenge. Sounds decent, right? The truth is that this story is flat from the opening credits. Dante isn't a likeable guy, the rott seems terribly vicious when it catches anybody but Dante, who manages to escape rather easily.

The dog looks pretty good considering the shoestring budget this snore-inducer was made on. However, the director takes a little too much artistic license with flashback sequences and makes it rather hard to understand exactly what is going on. Also, the ending is nothing short of dull, making me wonder why I wasted so much time on this flick.

As B-flicks go, this one includes plenty of nudity (and a little bit too much in one sequence). It's also got a reasonable amount of gore, not to mention one rather violent sequence that lets us see a young child witness her own mother's death. It isn't a funny B-movie, and it isn't even a serious B-flick. It's just a mush of gore, nudity, and violence that leads nowhere in the end.

Two stars are given for the dog in this flick. He actually looks pretty convincing through most of the film. However, I would only rent this flick if I were into cheesy B-horror. If you don't fall into that category, I'd skip this snoozer altogether.

    Not recommended.

1 out of 5 stars This may very well be the dumbest movie............ ever!!!.......2005-12-02

It's kinda like The Ring movie Ya know if you watch it youll die.Well you wont die from watching it but I garinty you will become dumber....see I cant even spell anymore!!I have been raeding encyclopedia's like crazy and I still can't Un-dumb myself.

I would rather have someone kick my face into a running lawnmower blade than EVER watch this movie again.

Screw war.We could take over the planet in a matter of months if we flooded other countries with this movie. They would become so dumb they would forget they hated us and would have no clue how to operate any weopon system what so ever.

when I am on my death bed the thing I will remember most is the whole 1 1/2 hrs of life I lost watching this movie that I will never get back!! GOD please forgive my soul for using the precious gift of time to watch something so..so.....so.....so......so .......dumb!!

1 out of 5 stars Calling this movie bad is an insult to bad movies........2005-09-16

Selecting to view the film, Rottweiler, as it features a half cyborg killer dog in it may reflect poorly on my taste in films. Be that as it may, Rottweiler makes a key mistake in my opinion by focusing on the humans in the film. It is set in the future and the Spanish prisons apparently have cyborg hunter dogs as part of their retrieval teams for escapees. Rather than follow the hapless "Dante" on his often al fresco journey across Spain, featuring incomprehensible flashbacks and odd one dimensional characters, why not more of an examination of the dog? The movie is titled Rottweiler. It might be interesting to know how the dog was created or changed. The runtime says 97 minutes but it feels much longer. Go with "Man's Best Friend" or "Cujo" if you want psycho dogs. A thoroughly disappointing effort.

2 out of 5 stars One of the worst films...it's an insult to the dog to have to be in it!.......2005-08-23

I watched this with my dad the other night. This movie is so stupid, no words can describe it. The plot is worthless and has no point. It doesn't fully explain what's really going on. I should have relized the movie was going to be horrible when it's only 10 minutes in and two people have died and he's already escaped. They also did a horrible attempt on making the dog look real. In about half the movie, it's a real dog but when it's not, it looks so fake it's unbelievable. Besides, a lot fo the people in this movie have no common sense at all. It's a good idea to create a vicious half dog and half robot pooch that's used to track down prison escapees but come on! This movie? This is the best you can do?
I think the movie deserves only one star but I gave it an extra one because the dog (when it's a real dog) is awesome! I love the rottie's ice blue eyes.

    Description

Leos Carax's (Pola X, Lovers on the Bridge) brilliant feature debut follows the relationship of an aspiring filmmaker (Denis Lavant), who has just been left by his lover and a suicidal young woman (Mireille Perrier), who is also reeling from a failed romance.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars A weak beginning for a good director........2006-01-14

I admire Leos Carax. How could one not admire a man so fixated on his grandiose ideas that he once bankrupted three producers and built a life-size replica of part of central Paris? At the same time, I confess that I don't so much like Boy Meets Girl, his first film. It leaves me with a feeling of dissatisfaction.

The protagonist, who looks exactly like Nick Cave, is an unemployed young man of ambiguous origins. He lives by himself in a small room somewhere in one of the shadier parts of Paris. When he gets tired of hearing the bickering of the couple next door, he skulks about the streets with his portable cassette player and glowers darkly. By chance, he comes across a depressed young woman named Mireille, and follows her to a party somewhere. He makes her acquaintance, they talk about their woes, and then he gets her to bring him home with her. Finally, disaster strikes and their romance is tragically cut short.

Mireille is also disturbed. She lives with a man who hates her and whom she despises. This situation is painful to her, and has presumably gone on for a long time. However, she shows no desire to change it, and continues to live in idleness, although her boyfriend is not so rich or successful as to be able to provide her with a luxurious existence. She is not married to him, and they have no children. It appears that she has never loved him at any point in time.

The film presents these facts without explaining or analyzing them. So, we learn that the protagonist wants to be a film-maker, although he has never actually made a film, and he does not really want to go through the process of making one. Similarly, we are told that Mireille wanted to be a model, but failed for some reason. We do not learn how they came to accept the lifestyles that they now lead, or even what they think about them. They make no attempts to justify themselves. Consequently, they come across as total ciphers.

Worse yet, both of them are incapable of empathy with each other, or with anyone else. When the main character has a chance to talk to the heroine, he talks about his suffering, argues that the woman should love him because she will eventually grow old and lose her good looks, and suggests that she could participate in a polyamorous relationship with him and his ex-girlfriend. Earlier, we learn that he has mistreated his ex-girlfriend, lied to her and even hit her, and that she has left him. He does not wonder whether she might have had good reason to do so. Mireille's troubles do not interest him either. But he does not even attempt to analyze his own feelings. It is impossible to understand what thoughts, objects and activities comprise his world. His apartment is totally bare. The only object in it is a typewriter that he doesn't use.

Mireille, likewise, is devoid of compassion for anyone other than herself. In depicting her, the film does not show her ever having a single kind thought. Her self-obsession, however, is lacking in self-awareness. She wallows in endless self-pity without really thinking about her life, or even acknowledging events and people around her. She is unwilling to do so. The film gives no plausible explanation for what might have driven her to such a state. Because of this, it is difficult to take her angst seriously.

And, since the film revolves exclusively around the angst of the protagonists, that means that there is nothing else to engage the viewer's own empathy. The viewer is left to wonder, uncharitably, whether the main characters are not merely engaging in such strange behaviour to be fashionable, there being no apparent cause for it in their lives. As the tagline of the film is "love without regrets," this was probably not the director's intention.

In addition, the dialogue is badly written. Carax's later film Lovers On The Bridge is much stronger and more believable in this regard. Here, the characters talk into space, not to each other. With each thing they say, the film becomes progressively more detached from reality. The plot device used to separate the main characters in preparation for the tragedy is especially silly. When Mireille leaves the party and takes the protagonist along, he has to stop somewhere to use the restroom, and then becomes engrossed in an arcade game for no apparent reason, so Mireille gets tired and leaves without him. Carax dwells on the arcade game for longer than necessary. He's not alone there, though. Such acclaimed directors as Wim Wenders and Chris Marker were also unduly fascinated by eighties technology.

To top it all off, the film isn't particularly visually interesting. Certainly it pales in comparison to Carax's own later films. The blurb on the cover says something about "night scenes in Paris," but there are almost no such scenes. Most of the film takes place indoors, in generic-looking apartments and kitchens. Despite Carax's love of the French New Wave, his camera here is boring and static. There are just a couple of Godard-style jump cuts, awkwardly placed. But it's not that he doesn't have a voice of his own. He just hadn't found it yet by this point.

The one scene here that works perfectly is the one where the protagonist overhears his ex-girlfriend talking in bed with her new boyfriend. Not only is it realistic, in contrast with the overwrought monologues that comprise most of the script, but it suddenly makes the protagonist's angst more comprehensible. Surely any man who overheard a woman he loved saying such things would feel just about the same way. Still, I think that the film is weak on the whole, and that Carax's next two films are far superior in both style and content.

    5 out of 5 stars TUFF LOV!.......2002-06-18

This bizarre, graphic and ultimately very moving journey through love's little foibles is brilliantly realized by auteur LEOS CARAX. In some ways a 'throwback' to the glorious days of Alain Resnais - superbly photographed and deliberately paced to draw the viewer [voyeur?] into the lives of our loving couple. Carax later works disappoint slightly, but let's face it he never is quite as boring as the other 'would be's"!

If you yearn for a good moody art movie - get this one!

Then explore the beginnings of this movement!

4 out of 5 stars Companion To Eraserhead.......2001-09-10

I have finally found a film to view alongside David Lynch's Eraserhead! This film shot in Black and White has the same grotesque abnormalities of Eraserhead, as well as the deadpan humor. The characters are shape much the same way, lonely but lovable in that they deal with life's uncertainties and love that has failed or been lost.

Bountiful with all the Lynchian eccentricities that, either you'll find yourself understanding them or you just won't! The film, is playful in much the same way as early French New Wave but thought provoking and with a sense of muted charisma. This film will definitely take more that a one-time viewing to really get any thing out of it due to emotions flying high and low throughout. The shots of Paris at night are truly remarkable in that the warmth of the wet streets can almost be touched ,walked, and perhaps even a slight aroma can be imagined. The "you are there" surroundings seem like a heated dream you are about ready to wake up from. A surreal moment in modern french cinema or rather a filmed performance piece with textures abound. Watch with the intent of being a fly on the wall and you may experience certain particles of your life appear before your very eyes. ...

2 out of 5 stars beauty is skin deep... ugly goes all the way through.......2001-05-22

On the surface, Boy Meets Girl is a beautifully shot film... sort of a classic film noir meets French new wave. But scratch off the artistic cosmetics and this is one ugly boring waste of time. Lots of pretentious babble and angst. Unlikable characters and a plot so uninteresting, I just wanted to hit the fast-forward button. Leos Carax has some talent and smarts (check out Pola X and Les Amants du Pont Neuf) but this ranks up there as a throw-away.

    Description

CRUSADER is an action thriller set in the world of telecommunications and television journalism. A journalist (Andrew McCarthy, TV's "Kingdom Hospital," St. Elmo's Fire) at a small television station, using less than ethical methods, manages to get an informant to divulge information that could potentially alter the world of telecommunications and the Internet. In the mix are an array of colorful characters who are connected by one common denominator: they all have something to hide.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terrible beyond words.......2005-11-15

Bryan Goeres shouldn't be directing films. After the infamous ART HEIST, he scores this media thriller. A B film made in Spain with terrible local actors, and Andrew McCarthy wishing he was doing Manequin 6.
The plot is ridiculous. A terrible waste of time.

    1 out of 5 stars Action?.......2005-08-31

This is an average action movie. The story is okay, media companies try to buy each other to dominate the industry and hire hit man. Young journalist from America finds himself in the trouble and solves the puzzle. It is an action movie but action scenes are far away from action. If you really have time and really like the action then buy it, otherwise you are not missing a lot.
