As of its release in early 2007, Planet Earth is quite simply the greatest nature/wildlife series ever produced. Following the similarly monumental achievement of The Blue Planet: Seas of Life, this astonishing 11-part BBC series is brilliantly narrated by Sir David Attenborough and sensibly organized so that each 50-minute episode covers a specific geographical region and/or wildlife habitat (mountains, caves, deserts, shallow seas, seasonal forests, etc.) until the entire planet has been magnificently represented by the most astonishing sights and sounds you'll ever experience from the comforts of home. The premiere episode, "From Pole to Pole," serves as a primer for things to come, placing the entire series in proper context and giving a general overview of what to expect from each individual episode. Without being overtly political, the series maintains a consistent and subtle emphasis on the urgent need for ongoing conservation, best illustrated by the plight of polar bears whose very behavior is changing (to accommodate life-threatening changes in their fast-melting habitat) in the wake of global warming--a phenomenon that this series appropriately presents as scientific fact. With this harsh reality as subtext, the series proceeds to accentuate the positive, delivering a seemingly endless variety of natural wonders, from the spectacular mating displays of New Guinea's various birds of paradise to a rare encounter with Siberia's nearly-extinct Amur Leopards, of which only 30 remain in the wild.

That's just a hint of the marvels on display. Accompanied by majestic orchestral scores by George Fenton, every episode is packed with images so beautiful or so forcefully impressive (and so perfectly photographed by the BBC's tenacious high-definition camera crews) that you'll be rendered speechless by the splendor of it all. You'll see a seal struggling to out-maneuver a Great White Shark; swimming macaques in the Ganges delta; massive flocks of snow geese numbering in the hundreds of thousands; an awesome night-vision sequence of lions attacking an elephant; the Colugo (or "flying lemur"--not really a lemur!) of the Philippines; a hunting alliance of fish and snakes on Indonesia's magnificent coral reef; the bioluminescent "vampire squid" of the deep oceans... these are just a few of countless highlights, masterfully filmed from every conceivable angle, with frequent use of super-slow-motion and amazing motion-controlled time-lapse cinematography, and narrated by Attenborough with his trademark combination of observational wit and informative authority. The result is a hugely entertaining series that doesn't flinch from the predatory realities of nature (death is a constant presence, without being off-putting), and each episode ends with 10-minute "Planet Earth Diaries" (exclusive to this DVD set) that cover a specific aspect of production, like "Diving with Pirahnas" or "Into the Abyss" (the latter showing the rigors of filming the planet's most spectacular caves, including the last filming ever officially permitted in the "Chandelier Ballroom," a crystal-encrusted cavern found over a mile deep in New Mexico's treacherous Lechuguilla, the deepest cave in the continental United States.)

With so many of Earth's natural wonders on display, it's only fitting that the final DVD in this five-disc set is devoted to Planet Earth: The Future, a separate three-part series in which a global array of experts is assembled to discuss issues of conservation, protection of delicate ecosystems, and the socio-economic benefits of understanding nature as a commodity that returns trillions of dollars in value at no cost to Earth's human population. At a time when the multiple threats of global warming should be obvious to all, let's give Sir David the last word, from the closing of Planet Earth's final episode: "We can now destroy or we can cherish--the choice is ours." --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars A Must See.......2007-07-05

I bought this as a gift and the photography is truly amazing. All the DVDs are exceptional - they will be enjoyed by people of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars Planet Earth - amazing visual treat.......2007-07-05

When I first heard about this documentary, I just heard about some of the more sensational items (lions teaming up to kill an elephant, baboons practing cannibalism against competing tribe), and thought this was one of that new generation of animal "snuff" films. However, taken in context of 10.5 hours of the whole series, it doesn't seem out of place or sensationalistic at all.

My parents bought this for me and my family to watch when they came to visit us in Germany, as they know our 2 children (6 and 9), love animals. However, it was great for the whole family. It is a visual treat, and some of the scenes displayed are amazing, both for the impressive cinematography as well as the rareness of the event being captured. My daughters laughed hysterically at the bizarre mating dances of various birds of paradise.

There are 11 different episodes, which cover every aspect of the Earth, from the arctic Poles to the deep ocean. There are of course favorites like the Great Plains and Jungles, but what's amazing is how interesting even segments like the Desert or Caves can be when treated so skillfully. My only minor complaint is that Sigourney Weaver's narration seemed a little flat, and got old to me after a while. This is undoubtedly a subjective thing.

This was probably the most amazing nature documentary I have ever seen, and I came away with much more of an appreciation of the abundant varieties of life we have on this planet. I would think almost everyone would enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-05

i bought the UK version with interesting words like "respearitory", "skeleetal" and "kilometer" (damn metric system)... Attenborough does the whole thing, so there are no Americans like on the discovery channel, but other than the narration, it's the same thing.

absolutely amazing. i've never seen shots like this before and the behind the scenes (diaries) are almost as cool as the actual documentary. i bought it for my girlfriend's birthday, but i've watched it twice since i gave it to her (she likes it too, but it was more of a present for me). does that make me a bad person?

5 out of 5 stars Amazing videos!.......2007-07-05

The scenery and imagery of the planet as we know it, is awesome. Not for the youngest people in your family if natural birth and death are an issue that you really don't want to have to explain. A little gruesome and depressing for our 5 year old. However, for the rest of us, we all love it and enjoy watching over and over. Plus, David Attenboroughs narration is perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning. Breath-Taking. Beautiful........2007-07-05

If there was any doubt that HD was worth the money, PLANET EARTH lays the question to rest.

This series is, without question, the most breath-taking, exquisitely beautiful and stunningly filmed series ever produced. Five years in the making, $25 million in production, 2,000 days of patient, timeless, extraordinary shots of nature at her most intense.

The breadth of the series is the planet. The pace is measured in the torrential downfall of rushing waters or beats of a hummingbird's wings or in the patient stillness of a snow leopard stalking her prey. The depths lie far beneath the surface in hidden crystal caves of Mexico. The heights are from outer space - we see our earth, as well as ourselves, in ways we have never dreamed possible.

Truly, the Creator's majesty is manifested in the tiniest details of creation. Nowhere is it more beautifully and astonishingly depicted as in PLANET EARTH.

5 out of 5 stars Great documentary.......2007-07-05

I was so impressed by this filming of our planet. The scenes are absolutely breathtaking in Hd. Some of the video captures are totally out of this world. I found this to be probably the best hd title in my whole collection so far.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most earth-shatteringly beautiful documentaries of our time.......2007-07-05

Narrated by David Attenborough, one of the signature narrators in the history of documentaries, you will be pulled in to the beauty that is the very planet we live on. Nothing short of fantastic, all of the images are beautifully crafted and set. You can most assuredly tell that many, many years-worth of time were put into the making of this production. Even if you've never seen a documentary before, this set will keep you mesmerized. For those who are more seasoned, this is your paradise. It is nothing short of incredible. While it is obvious that a few shots were not done in 1080p, most of the footage has incredible detail and color. Your search for the most fantastic documentary of recent time is over.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Series in Perfect Quality.......2007-07-04

This is an absolutely stunning box set. If you have an HD ready TV and and HD DVD player then you cannot afford to miss this. The footage is out of this world and the picture is so sharp I almost cut myself.
I watched a few of them when it was on the TV and swore to buy the box set when it came out. When I learned that I could get it in HD it was a no brainer. Buy this and chill for many hours.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2007-07-04

This BBC series "Planet Earth" is one of the most beautiful productions I've seen. After seeing a few episodes on PBS, being able to see this in wide-screen HD format is an unbelievable experience. My 15 year old son and 9 year old daughter have been completely enraptured, and she actually pleads to watch it again (quite a step up from Sponge Bob, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars WOW WOW WOW.......2007-07-05

This is a great series period. However, add the clarity of Blue-Ray and it is an entirely different experience. I put it on with at a gathering of friends, just as a background distraction, and the entire room stopped down and watched it for 2 hours!

5 out of 5 stars Consider this your Blu-Ray demo disc........2007-07-05

The series is very informative and entertaining, but it also serves as the perfect demo disc to show off the "Blu-Ray Experience".

5 out of 5 stars WOWSER!.......2007-07-05

You think you know Planet Earth? Think again. This is the most indepth, unbelieveable presentation ever of our natural world. In Blu-Ray HD, it is beyong breathtaking. I am 57 years old and a nature show enthusiast, but many scenes were of such beauty and majesty that I was left gaping like some little child seeing his first circus ever. This is a must-have for anyone who loves this planet and its innumerable wonders. Many will come away from viewing this series and feel small by comparison. I came away feeling priviledged to be a part of the great mystery, majesty, miracle that is our home - Planet Earth.

5 out of 5 stars Planet Earth--Complete BBC Series in Blue Ray.......2007-07-05

Finally I received the complete collection in 1080P in Blue Ray narrated by David Attenborough--The only way to see it is via HDMI 1000 Cable connection. On my Sony 60 inch SXRD the images were life like and the surround sound very 'enveloping'.Good job BBC for the series and Sony for the TV.
Would love to see the BBC embark on a series about the great train journeys around the world in Blue Ray.(Contact me for some possible 'journeys')

Amazon.com essential video

Originally broadcast in April and May of 1998, the epic miniseries From the Earth to the Moon was HBO's most expensive production to date, with a budget of $68 million. Hosted by executive producer Tom Hanks, the miniseries tackles the daunting challenge of chronicling the entire history of NASA's Apollo space program from 1961 to 1972. For the most part, it's a rousing success. Some passages are flatly chronological, awkwardly wedging an abundance of factual detail into a routine dramatic structure. But each episode is devoted to a crucial aspect of the Apollo program. The cumulative effect is a deep and thorough appreciation of NASA's monumental achievement. With the help of a superlative cast, consistent writing, and a stable of talented directors, Hanks has shared his infectious enthusiasm for space exploration and the inspiring power of conquering the final frontier.

NASA's complete participation in the production lends to its total authenticity, right down to the use of NASA equipment, launch locations, and even spacecraft. The re-creation of the lunar landscape is almost as impressive as the real thing and is further enhanced by the use of helium balloons to lighten the actors playing moon-walking astronauts. (These and other backstage details are revealed in the "making of" featurette, along with a wealth of supplemental materials, on a bonus disc in the miniseries' DVD package.) With a fictional, Walter Cronkite-like TV reporter (Lane Smith) serving as the dramatic link for all 12 episodes, this ambitious production may not be a great work of art. But as a generous and definitive example of nonfiction drama, it's full of the same kind of awe, inspiration, and humanity that led to "one giant leap" in the all-too-short history of 20th-century space exploration. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars wonderfully told history .......2007-07-06

We first watched this entire series on netflix and fell in love with it. If you have any interest in the space program at all it will hold your interest and you will learn even more.

When Amazon ran this as a gold box special we bought 3 sets - one for us and one for each of our parents.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome buy.......2007-06-09

Great quality, wonderful packaging and super fast delivery. This is a must for anyone interested in space history.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2007-06-08

This is a great series that shows just how great our country was when it really put its mind to doing something. Its sad how far we have fallen and how little interest there is in space. We used to lead the world in science, now we are dismally far down the list. This series shows the pioneering spirit that made our country great.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets..........2007-05-17

I was born after the Apollo missions were a thing of the past, so I have no personal recollection of any of the events depicted in "From the Earth to the Moon." And I have never been particularly fascinated with space, never one to say as a kid that I wanted to be an astronaut when I was older. I thought "Apollo 13" was a solid film. I say all of this to provide the context to suggest that I was not naturally predisposed to love this miniseries.

Nonetheless, I found "From the Earth to the Moon" to be utterly fascinating, a remarkable piece of filmmaking. It helps that it covers a piece of history that is full of great stories. I was in awe of the size of the task that lay before all those involved in the Apollo missions and the synergy of a million little decisions and inventions and steps and tasks that needed to come together to make Apollo 11 possible. Thankfully, it didn't appear that the filmmakers felt inclined to exaggerate the stories. Instead, they allowed the power of that slice of history to stand on its own.

Another strength of this miniseries was the technique of having different directors for each episode. This allowed each episode to have its own feel, its own flavor. This variety was refreshing and never allowed the nearly 12 hours of film to become stale. Of course, there were a few episodes that I found to be less appealing, as one would expect from so many different approaches, but the diversity of storytelling techniques made a few personal dislikes to be worthwhile.

A final major strength was the fact that each episode focused on a different set of people in the whole scheme of things. One episode focused on the media. One episode focused on the wives of the astronauts. One episode focused on the company contracted to build the lunar module for the Apollo missions. One episode focused on the scientists within NASA who battled amongst each other on such things as the location of the next landing site. One episode focused on the relationships between the three astronauts assigned to a particular mission. Again, this varied focus provided each episode with a unique perspective and shed new light on the events.

My only complaint, and this is minor, is that the extras were very underwhelming. One "making of" documentary was interesting, but the rest of the extras were rather forgettable. I suppose that this was produced on the front end of the extras phenomenon, but I would have liked to have seen more interviews, unused footage, and maybe even some bloopers.

Overall, I would rank "From the Earth to the Moon" among the finest pieces of filmmaking that I've ever seen. The acting was fantastic, and all of the production values were top-notch. I was utterly captivated and wish that the series had continued into Skylab, the shuttles, and beyond!!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MINISERIES.......2007-05-14

I've loved this series since it first premiered on HBO. I am very happy to now have it in my home collection.

A sleeper at the time of its release in 1984, Thom Eberhardt's Night of the Comet has built a small cadre of fans thanks to its breezy performances and blend of comedy and tongue-in-cheek science fiction. Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney are thoroughly likable as a pair of San Fernando Valley sisters who find themselves completely alone after the arrival of Halley's Comet reduces their affluent community--and most of Los Angeles--to dust. Their subsequent nonstop shopping spree is soon interrupted by predatory zombies, as well as a sinister scientific cabal (led by cult favorites Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis) with designs on the girls. Stewart and Maroney are terrifically game as the heroines (especially Maroney, whose flair for bubbly comedy was never given another chance on screen), and Robert (Star Trek: Voyager) Beltran is also on hand as a fellow survivor and romantic lead. Fun for '80s enthusiasts and sci-fi fiends who don't mind a little fizz in their end-of-the-world scenarios. -- Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Apocalypse...Valley Girl Style.......2007-07-04

A signifcant cult hit when released in late 1984, NIGHT OF THE COMET is an admittedly cheesy film even by the standards of low-bduget offerings, and dated as well; given the time in which it was made, it screams "Eighties!" But it still somehow comes off as a completely fascinating oddity, combining tongue-in-cheek 80s comedy with science fiction and horror.

The premise is a fairly simple one: A large comet (contrary to what some reviews have said, this comet does not have a name attached to it) makes an uncomfortably close encounter with our planet while millions have come out this night to watch its arrival. But the following morning, two Valley Girls (Catherine Mary Stewart; Kelli Maroney) come out, and realize, albeit slowly, that everyone and everything around them has literally turned to dust; and if they haven't turned to dust, they've either gone psychotic or turned into zombies. The City of Angels is now a veritable ghost town. And along with an Hispanic trucker (Robert Beltran), they soon find themselves at the mercy of mad scientists searching for a vaccine from the comet dust that killed or zombified everyone else.

Provocative title aside, nobody is going to mistake NIGHT OF THE COMET for such similar films as DEEP IMPACT, METEOR, or the hyped-up ARMAGEDDON by any means; the dialogue has so much in the way of Valley Girl lingo that there's no mistaking its era. These flaws aside, however, writer/director Thom Eberhardt manages to make the most of a parlous budget. Apart from the slightly lame dialogue and comedy, NIGHT OF THE COMET has a lot in common with the 1971 sci-fi thriller THE OMEGA MAN (scenes of a deserted Los Angeles), and its source material, Richard Matheson's classic 1954 book "I Am Legend"; and Eberhardt's decision to use orange filters to create an L.A. skyline shrouded by comet dust has echoes of an early Steven Spielberg TV project, 1971's L.A. 2017.

Quite campy by today's standards and a product of its time, NIGHT OF THE COMET nevertheless remains very watchable in ways that many other films like it with budgets one hundred times bigger aren't. It is a midnight cult item that should be seen to be believed.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, Funny, Cult-Classic.......2007-06-28

Make some popcorn and settle into your favorite chair for this one. As the opening narative states, the world has not seen a comet like this since the dinosaurs disappeared. A good foreshadow as one comet-watcher assures everyone that nothing happened when people were so worried about Halley's Comet coming around so there's no need to worry now. Well they should've worried, as we soon find out in this OmegaMan-knockoff. Yes this is a B-movie and yes there are some inconsistancies, but for the most part the plot has good execution and follow-thru. If you're a scifi fan who enjoys recognizing stolen moments from other movies, or you like a movie that can poke fun at its own genre, or you just want some good clean fun to make you laugh, this movie is for you.

2 out of 5 stars Hollywood, Please Remake This One! Thanks........2007-06-18

This is a "nice" little C-grade movie. This movie is NOT 4.5 stars in the 21st century. "Night of the Living Dead" (1968)-now that's 4.5-5 stars still in today's age. I believe the people that rated this movie past 2 stars are promotional stand-ins for Hollywood. Either that or they've been watching some pretty whacked out flicks. Speaking of Hollywood-Hollywood this would be a lovely little movie to re-make. I would hope that you don't do much worse than the original like the Hollywood remake for "Black Christmas"-an atrocity. But to prevent another remake catastrophe, Hollywood, please grab either Sam Raimi, Quentin Tarantino, John Carpenter or even Steven Spielberg before attempting a remake of this film. This why I am so NOT liking this film: I asked myself: why the "Star Wars" intro? Boring. Why the banter between snobby mom and snobby child? Boring. Why the movie theater and radio station scene? Nothing really happens. Boring. Then it hit me these scenes are just space fillers. The only thing worth watching is the 3 or 4 zombies that debut in the film and the no-nonsense, woman scientist, Audrey. She's lethal like her shot. This movie is absolutely afraid to be horror. Horror to the point where Ms. Cheerhead gets "done-in" for real by Audrey. Horror like poppin' the zombie kid in the noggin-just for kicks. Or horror, like the zombie kid eats Mr. Knight in Shinning Armor. Horror like RUN Ms. Cheerhead over at the end-I mean get real she asked for it by running out in the streets challenging Fate at its best! These are just some improvement horror suggestions. I mean come on in a real-life event one of them would die if not all, in their case, but no everyone stays alive. And with no surprise, the ending is too "happily ever after." Horror should never be happily ever after unless there is a grotesquely sarcastic twist i.e, the ending of John Carpenter's "Village of the Damned" and "The Thing." Or the ending of Robert Rodriguez's "Death Proof" (Note: SHAME on you movie watchers who did not understand "Grindhouse"). Now those are some endings that leave you thinking. This movie is probably best served to newly found horror fans or some Halloweeners on October 31st. Sorry folks, I have to be honest. This movie really ain't worth a nickel, until the remake. That is if there is one and if Hollywood doesn't F&$K that up. I'm selling my copy of "Night of the Comet." Anyone want to buy? Sorry no "nickel discounts".

5 out of 5 stars Good 80s campy fun.......2007-06-16

Do you like zombie movies but feel that Romero is too preachy? Well this may be the movie for you. It has the scared female protaganist of Night of the Living Dead, the blantant capitalistic joys of malls like Dawn of the Dead, and the confined underground scientists of Day of the Dead. It has zombies at different levels of intelligence in it like Land of the Dead which came two decades later, making it ahead of its time when it comes to the zombie genre.
Now in all seriousness Night of the Comet is cheesy as it gets and if you are one that enjoys movies so bad that they are good than give this movie a shot. It doesn't offer any special features and although I wish it did provide a commentary of sorts, the cheapness of the product lets this omission slide. So get a few friends, a few drinks, pop in this DVD, and let the campy fun begin.

A hallmark of the science fiction genre as well as a wry commentary on the political climate of the 1950s, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a sci-fi movie less concerned with special effects than with a social parable. A spacecraft lands in Washington, D.C., carrying a humanoid messenger from another world (Michael Rennie) imparting a warning to the people of Earth to cease their violent behavior. But panic ensues as the messenger lands and is shot by a nervous soldier. His large robot companion destroys the Capitol as the messenger escapes the confines of the hospital. He moves in with a family as a boarder and blends into society to observe the full range of the human experience. Director Robert Wise (West Side Story) not only provides one of the most recognizable icons of the science fiction world in his depiction of the massive robot loyal to his master, but he avoids the obvious camp elements of the story to create a quiet and observant story highlighting both the good and the bad in human nature. --Robert Lane

Description

The Day The Earth Stood Still depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C. hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can tell them more specifically what he has come to warn them about. Losing patience, Klaatu slips into the human world, adapting a false identity and living at a boarding house where he meets a smart woman with a conscience and her inquisitive son. Both mother and son soon find themselves embroiled in the complex mystery of Klaatu, his message and the government's witch hunt for the alien.

Who knew that actress Patricia Neal and good old Francis Bavier (Aunt Bea from Mayberry fame) would ever appear together, along with Michael Rennie, in this sci-fi-cult screamer of a black-and-white classic, and that we will forever remember the line: "Gort! Klaatu Barada nikto!" This item is worth having just as a peerless piece of 50's memorabilia! Get it, watch it... and Wikipedia it for little known factoids!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sci-fi movies of the 50's.......2007-04-24

If ever a film could capture the very essence of syrupy conception while making us love it with utter devotion, this is it. The story is perfectly linear in construction, the characters neat and tidy. The story unfolds before you like a clean, speckled linoleum walkway. Just put on your high-tops and stroll along, glass of milk in one hand, cookies in the other. This is the film that reminds the peacenik in us that those higher powers, you know - the guardians of intergalactic peace we just know are out there, are watching, waiting for that single telltale act of malicious intent from homo sapiens that will bring down every last heat ray of righteous fury the outer space cops can muster and "leave our world a burned out cinder."

You'll love the fact that huge diamonds are the currency on the space cops' planet, and that he carries a few million dollars worth in the pockets of his borrowed woolen suit for change. You'll especially love the fact that just three little words, constructed of strangely Germanic phonemes, when spoken to a ten-foot tall robot awakened with a boy scout's flashlight, can belay its built-in command to destroy our world. Watch in bug-eyed awe as Michael Rennie's hands play over those big `ol light bulbs that double as his flying saucer's controls, waving this way and that, as he launches the most complex shipboard functions. Gasp agog as you discover that the cop's ship is made of material so tough that it's un-scratchable, un-filable and un-blowtorchable. Watch the space cop scribble the answer to a monstrously long mathematical equation on Albert Einstein's doppelganger's chalkboard to get the pipe-smoking professor's attention. It's pure poetry I tell you.

5 out of 5 stars The Day the Earth Stood Still.......2007-04-04

This is the original classic movie that everyone should see. The props and the technology of film making has advanced but the differences in our world are the same. Man only does one thing well. He finds improved ways of killing each other. In this movie, though many years old, man is faced with a dilemma. Live in harmony or be eliminated by higher intelligence. Let's face it folks, no intelligent life form would want to have anything to do with a race of people that only excell at murdering each other and their own environment! It is a great movie.

5 out of 5 stars The Earth Stood Still This Movie Moves On.......2007-03-19

After so many years this movie couldn't have been written better today than it was back then. A great theme ahead of it's time with a great cast. I wish they could still make movies today like they did back then. Unfortunately most of these older movies have lost their moral meaning throughout the 60's, 70's, 80's, and whatever was the 90's. It just goes to show that just because something is new doesn't make it better. Watch this movie and you will know what I mean.

James Mason plays Professor Oliver Lindenbrook, a scientist hoping to find the world's core in this 1959 adaptation of the Jules Verne novel. He leads his unusual party on an expedition to the center of the earth, by way of a volcano in Iceland. On the way, they encounter enormous mushrooms and giant prehistoric monsters. Produced by Michael Todd with then-spectacular special effects, the story was modernized to 1950s sensibilities. Mason gives this class, while Arlene Dahl and Diane Baker are the romantic interests. And Pat Boone is more palatable than you might expect as a secondary lead. You can watch this with your children and not be bored, and they will surely love it. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the Center of the Earth.......2007-07-04

My son was so interested in seeing this movie after seeing the book at a Doctor's office. He has been thrilled with the quality and the story!

4 out of 5 stars In the spirit of Jules Verne.......2007-06-29

Collectively, Verne's novels were called "Les voyages extraordinaires", and this film, whatever licenses have been taken with the source, aspires to that. While the prelude to the journey is too long (we even have to endure Pat Boone croon a tuneless number), once we've plunged into the Earth, the film takes on an air of wonderment.

Cast chemistry contributes in a big way. James Mason, a brooding but stout leader. Pat Boone, surprisingly effective as an eager student (but not so successful as a Scotsman). Arlene Dahl, a ravishingly beautiful damsel who is sage and sane and only distressed when she really really needs to be. Real-life Icelander Peter Ronson, a tall man's man -- who loves his pet duck. Gravelly-voiced American (believe it or not) Thayer David, pure villainy.

While the special effects are often praised, I think much of the credit for the wonder and awe of the film goes to the elaborate sets.

And I doubt that Bernard Herrmann had a better vehicle for his mystical, sonorous music.

Add the final ingredient: a script that mixes fun and excitement with the fantastical.

Blend thoroughly and you have an extraodinary voyage for the teenager in you.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Adventure Movie of All-Time!!!.......2007-06-17

I am in my late 20's and I saw this for the first time when I was a young teenager. It captivated my imagination in so many ways and after viewing it repeatedly within the last few years after getting it on DVD I have to say it completely stands the test of time. I wouldn't change a single thing about the characters, actors chosen to play them, the plot, the special effects, anything. It all fits together perfectly, like in the same way Goonies and Ghostbusters did. Plus the soundtrack is phenomenal. Every time I hear an excerpt from it I get sucked back into the movie. It's perfect music for the journey.

The screenplay is excellent. It has the right amount of scientific basis, comedy spots here and there, intelligent lines, logical dialog, and the best possible way of telling a story about a journey to the center of the Earth. I'm no scientist, but I'm pretty sure the center of the earth is molten and extremely hot and not possible to get to. So the story in general cannot actually happen in real life. But that doesn't matter. the story here is presented in the best possible way that it *could* happen if it were a possibility. And presented in a way most people would actually want it to happen.

The reason I love older adventure movies more than newer ones is because they didn't have computer effects to use so they made every thing, which in turn gave it a more tangible quality and made it more real. Most of the special effects completely hold up. The lizards seem real, the ocean scenes and the journey down all seem extremely real.

It's a top notch production all the way through. Every now and then the stars align on a film and it surely did with this one. I wouldn't change a thing about it. I like it even more than "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" which is another Mason classic.

If you haven't seen it then without a doubt get it. It's great for the whole family. Nothing is excessive or would limit any age groups.

5 out of 5 stars Classic film.......2007-05-18

This movie is a classic and should be in the library of any Jules Verne fan!

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the Center of the Earth.......2007-05-13

What a great movie! I saw it on the big screen when I was a kid. I bought the DVD as soon as it came out. Beautiful scenery and some majestic shots. My favorite part is where they find all the crystals. OK, the story line is a little hokie and special effects don't measure up to today's standards but still a really good movie for the whole family. Watch the movie, eat popcorn, don't judge it by today's movies, enjoy. Where else are you going to get to see Pat Boone naked among a herd of sheep?

There is a thinly, thinly, thinly veiled attempt at creating a plot and at acting in this fairly dirty blue movie. Kara (Venesa Talor) is sent to experience bodily pleasure by her alien species, which leads to numerous unconnected, plot-irrelevant encounters with all kinds of buxom babes and buff guys. The pool, the massage parlor, the avant-garde theater--these kooky humans seem to be going at it everywhere! Kara must believe that she's landed not on Earth, but the planet Silicone, but she never seems to kvetch about it. On the plus side the actors are attractive and keep their wooden deliveries at a minimum to allow full enjoyment of the wretched porno-quality soundtrack. Surprisingly, no mention of thanks to Lee Strasberg in the final credits. Plenty o' skin. --Keith Simanton

1 out of 5 stars Femalien.......2007-05-31

A soft adult movie. Good to watch once if you are in the mood for that type of movie.Save your money and get something else.

1 out of 5 stars Crappy.......2007-03-27

Should have 0-star as a choice. Horrible excuse for a sci-fi movie. I don't see what the other reviewers seen in here. Poor DVD quality. Lucky for me, I don't plan on watching it again.

3 out of 5 stars hummm.......2007-03-19

This wasn't what I thought it was more soft core I guess.I watched it 2 times and I guess I got what I paid for.LOL

3 out of 5 stars Good enough not to skip ahead.......2006-09-04

There is enough of a plot and the acting is good enough that this movie is watchable, even if it is not just the soft porn that you are looking for.

2 out of 5 stars Relaxing viewing time.......2006-07-17

A DVD of clear good photography and quite pleasant to watch but a little embarrasing in family company. Really only suitable for watching in private.

Avatar the Last Airbender: Book 2 Earth, Volume 3 covers chapters 11 through 15 in the ongoing saga of Aang, the 12-year-old reincarnation of an avatar destined to reunite the warring nations of fire, earth, water, and air. Still traveling with his friends Katara, Sokka, and newcomer Toph, Aang gets into some of the strangest and most compelling situations yet seen on his journey to master control over all four elements. The first story, "The Desert," finds Aang so upset over the abduction and criminal sale of his flying bison, Appa, that the powerful boy shows a streak of rage, demonstrating to himself that he could easily use his emerging skills to harm enemies if he wished. Still, Appa remains missing through this volume, leading the gang on a mission to survive a desert sojourn and survive during a perilous flight (with a young family in tow) over a pass through mountains and ocean in "The Serpent's Pass." They also get involved in a bizarre fight (in "The Drill") against the Fire Nation army and its gigantic drill, which is aimed at the outer wall of Ba Sing Se, a city occupied by earth people. Once inside Ba Sing Se, however, things get really weird: smiling officials (in "City of Walls and Secrets") outlaw any discussion of the war outside in order to keep the population placid and the economy rolling. Finally, "Tales of Ba Sing Se" is an original piece made up of individual vignettes focusing on each of the major characters. If there is anything surprising about Book 2 Earth, Volume 3, it's the amount of romance (kissing, even!) in the air. These Avatar boys and girls are growing up. --Tom Keogh

Product Description

Aang, Katara, Sokka and their new friend Toph are searching for Appa while traveling to Ba Sing Se to tell the Earth King about their attack on the Fire Nation. Along the way they meet up with old friends and fight off the Fire Nation's evil Princess Azula.

5 out of 5 stars Avatar! Avatar! AVATAR!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-28

I love this DVD. I could watch it again and again and never get tired of it. The only bad part was that it didn't come with a mini-comic. I love to see what's happening, but without the third part... Did anyone else have this problem? Anyway, a must buy!

4 out of 5 stars Great, But..........2007-06-15

The episodes are fantastic, but this DVD did NOT come with the third part of the comic as advertised... did anyone else have that issue with their DVDs? The first and second DVD of Season 2 came with the mini-comics, but not this one...

5 out of 5 stars go Avatar.......2007-06-04

This is a multi-generational hit. My grandson, my daughter and I can all sit dopwn and watch it and wait for the next installment - the only thing that really makes me angry - is why aren't th
