5 out of 5 stars Kathy is A-List all the way! .......2007-07-03

Season One of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List" is finally available, and the nice folks at Bravo have even gone the extra mile to tack on "Kathy Griffin is...Not Nicole Kidman" which is a stand-up special from 2005. I don't know what I've enjoyed more! Kathy is so quick and so impulsive, even the members of "Team Griffin" it seems are often surprised at how funny she is when she's not even trying. Even her stand-up special is so original and unscripted, it's like watching one big improvisational conversation, between Kathy and her audience. My only gripe is that the Bravo people found it necessary even here on its DVD release, to 'bleep' the explatives like they do for the TV broadcasts. While it might be a bit more family friendly, Kathy's cusses make it all the more chuckle worthy. (***Check out Kathy's DVD "Allegedly" for more uncensored laughs than you can handle. ***) All in all, it's a great DVD. Looking forward to Season 2 of My Life on the D-List. Thanks for all the laughs Kathy!

5 out of 5 stars She is just the BEST.......2007-07-01

I love Kathy Griffin and I love this show. I really want a deluxe set with all three seasons and the specials included. I also want the show to last all year long and air three hours a day. What I really want is all Kathy, all the time.

I am a happily married heterosexual woman. My husband loves her too! She stops at NOTHING for a laugh. I want to be her when I grow up. Even though I am several million years older than she is already.

5 out of 5 stars She Is So "A" List!!! .......2007-06-22

Ok, Kathy Griffin is not for EVERYONE. However for those of "US" she is for, there is just NO one that will make you laugh harder! Kathy has that special way of telling her stories and her observations are keen and whitty. No one is "safe" (including Kathy herself) from her stories and she finds humor in it all. Can't wait for season 2 on dvd. (and you can watch season 3 on bravo Tuesday nights all summer.....Ok kathy...you OWE me Girl!)

5 out of 5 stars IF YOU DONT LOVE IT....YOU CAN SUCK IT & HERE's WHY..........2007-06-22

Well i was on holiday in LasVegas when i got hooked on this show. And as soon as i got home, i was desperate for a DVD! Having bought the chokkingly funny 'Allegedly' , i couldnt wait to get my hands on Kathy's D-List life!!!OMG!
The wonderful, beautiful & extremely witty KG invites us into her hectic life (D-List). Its pee-extractingly funny! With generous dvd extras!
From the dorky ex-husband, to the slave driven PA, to the laugh a minute parents,,,Kathy's D-list life makes a great show and an extremely hard act to follow!

She is a genuine, comedy genius! Who is quite literally not fully appreciated in her own time.
I love her! And you will too,,,so buy this DVD NOW!!!!

5 out of 5 stars FROM ONE REALITY SHOW HATER TO ANOTHER, THIS SHOW ROCKS...!!!.......2007-06-15

The one thing that's always bugged me about reality TV, is the fact that most of it looks staged ("Gee, I think, for no readily available reason, I'm gonna take off my cloths and jump into this public swimming pool...") but that is the one thing that grabs you from the get go in this show, is that Kathy Griffin seems so frazzled most of the time (what with her self proclaimed D-list status, making her do twice the amount of work, for half the recognition) and doesn't really seem to notice the camera invasion, about 95% of the time (the other 5% has her playing to the camera like any comedian worth their salt would, being as cuttingly insightful as she can be, and ripping on anyone she can get her mind around, including, herself).

It's GREAT to finally get the whole first season (with the second to follow, fingers crossed) on DVD, as here in Canada, it was next to impossible to find it's air time on the station that was broadcasting it, and as a result, I only managed to see an episode and a haf of the show, but what I did see was a funny, oddly cute, but also vulnerable, side of Kathy Griffin ("don't call me GIFFORD!!!") that wasn't so much evasive (as most reality TV tries to be) but more documentaries, in a wholly entertaining and unabashed look into this funny lady's hectic life.

Just a note, yes the censor bleeps are still there, but in all reality, I think it adds to the hilarity of the show (kind of like Yo' Semity Sam, from the Buggs Bunny Show, when he'd curse under his breath, you couldn't quite make out what he was saying, and that only made it all the more funnier).

Or is it just me?

Steven Spielberg had a banner year in 1993. He scored one of his biggest commercial hits that summer with the mega-hit Jurassic Park, but it was the artistic and critical triumph of Schindler's List that Spielberg called "the most satisfying experience of my career." Adapted from the best-selling book by Thomas Keneally and filmed in Poland with an emphasis on absolute authenticity, Spielberg's masterpiece ranks among the greatest films ever made about the Holocaust during World War II. It's a film about heroism with an unlikely hero at its center--Catholic war profiteer Oskar Schindler (Liam Neeson), who risked his life and went bankrupt to save more than 1,000 Jews from certain death in concentration camps.

By employing Jews in his crockery factory manufacturing goods for the German army, Schindler ensures their survival against terrifying odds. At the same time, he must remain solvent with the help of a Jewish accountant (Ben Kingsley) and negotiate business with a vicious, obstinate Nazi commandant (Ralph Fiennes) who enjoys shooting Jews as target practice from the balcony of his villa overlooking a prison camp. Schindler's List gains much of its power not by trying to explain Schindler's motivations, but by dramatizing the delicate diplomacy and determination with which he carried out his generous deeds.

As a drinker and womanizer who thought nothing of associating with Nazis, Schindler was hardly a model of decency; the film is largely about his transformation in response to the horror around him. Spielberg doesn't flinch from that horror, and the result is a film that combines remarkable humanity with abhorrent inhumanity--a film that functions as a powerful history lesson and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the context of a living nightmare. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars A movie that will change your life........2007-06-18

Schindler's List, directed by Steven Spielberg, is a film about the Holocaust. This movie will break your heart and change your life.

So what's this movie about? This movie is mainly about the Holocaust with a side story about a man named Schindler. Schindler was a German who knew Nazis in higher power. He used his good standing to help Jews. He owned a factory and recruited Jews to work for him so that they wouldn't have to go to concentration camps.

What's to like about this movie? First of all, aside from a little girl's coat, most of this movie is in black and white. Also, there's a ton of detail in terms of costumes and props. The realism as well as the camera work are a huge plus. Second, it's EXTREMELY emotional. You see everything. From people getting shot to dead bodies being burned, Spielburg doesn't hide anything. The one scene that truly had me in tears was when a trainful of Jews were squished together in the extremely hot weather. Schindler persuades the Nazi soldiers to spray them with firehoses. You can see one person drinking the water that falls down from the top of the train. It made me realize that these people were treated like animals, not human beings.

What's not to like about this movie? The reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 is because the big plot of this movie was to show how the Jews were treated during the Holocaust. If you're like me and you've studied books and watched movies about this subject, not a lot of what happens in this movie will surprise you. For the average person, this movie will completely shock you and have you in tears. The only thing that was new to me was Schindler's story.

This is a movie that EVERYONE needs to watch. There's a ton of nudity and violence so I would hold off on letting young kids watch this but adults will be completely enthralled.

    5 out of 5 stars Necessary.......2007-06-16

I rate this movie 9.5/10 or 5 stars. This movie is among the 1000 Best Movies in DVD's by Peter Travers and in the Top 10 list of Best American Movies Ever. The movie won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director. Steven Spielberg directs this movie 10 years after he read the book for the first time and was completely fascinated with the story. As a Jewish himself, he brings to the screen the story of those Jews who survived the Holocaust thanks to one man -Oskar Schindler-, who gave them the opportunity to work in his factories during the end of World War II. The movie shows the brutality of the Nazi army against the Jews, and how they were being killed at different Death Camps (Auswitch, etc.). The movie is based on true facts collected after the testimony of many people who experienced the Holocaust and survived. The movie is rated R for obvious reasons and it is very difficult to contain the tears. This DVD Collector's Gift Set edition is absolutely wondeful, including a special plexiglas casing, a picture book showcasing images by photographer David James with a foreword by Spielberg, the Original Soundtrack by the Oscar winner and always superb John Williams, and a rare limited edition senitype individually numbered and made from a actual film frame from the movie. (So the price it's just a bargain with all of that!). I want to say that, despite not being a Jewish nor coming from a country involved in World War II, I feel absolutely moved by the story told here and I have enormous respect and empathy for the Jewish community and for all the atrocities they have gone through their history. This is a necessary movie that needed to be done and needs to be seen by as many people as possible, so we don't make the same mistakes in the future. We are all human beings, and we all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, regardless our religion, ethnicity, race, social status, sexual orientation, etc. Unfortunately today, we are still witness of so many intolerance and bigotry that makes me feel embarassed and very sad. We all should work together for human peace, love and understanding among all peoples from all countries in the world. This movie helps people understand how important it is to know each other and understand each other, so ignorance and hatred does not govern our lifes.

P.S. If you like my review vote YES. You can read all my other reviews if you wish to. I modestly write them to help people form an opinion about movies, music and books, but if nobody reads them (if you don't vote I do not know if you did) there is no point in writing them.

    5 out of 5 stars a whole new language.......2007-06-04

Stephen Spielberg's SCHINDLER'S LIST is simply the finest motion picture ever made.

The story brings us face to face with the most organized evil of which humanity has yet proven itself capable. Spielberg's direction and performances of Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes attain that level at which matters are simply beyond improvement. One merely stands in awe.

After viewing the LIST for just the second time since its debut in 1993, this reviewer can think of no more adequate response than the exhortation to buy, rent, view, and then bow silently or in prayer before the fact of evil and the potency of good.

Sadly, it takes a wickedness so vile as to require its own language to occasion a work of art so noble in its conception and execution that language fails to describe it.

'The LIST', as Kingsley's Yitzhak Stern says with a different intent, 'is an absolute good.'

    Product Description

The DVD debut of the Oscar-winning film delivers an outstanding image and sound experience (both 5.1 and DTS tracks are provided), although the single disc needs to be flipped to see the entire film. The centerpiece of the extra features is the new 70-minute "Voices from the List," in which the men and women saved by Oskar Schindler talking about their experiences and memories. The film does an excellent job of complementing the film without overshadowing it in any way. It came out of the Shoah Foundation, which Steven Spielberg started after the film to record first-hand experiences of the Holocaust. A 10-minute featurette updates the foundation's efforts. Unfortunately, there is no insight on the making of the film except a few liner notes. Perhaps the film has such a revered status, deconstructing it might be something Spielberg doesn't want to do, but it's frustrating not to hear from the cast and crew who helped put together one of the 1990s' most distinguished and well-crafted films. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars needs no review.......2007-06-10

    this is a phenomenal film.

    everyone should own it.

    2 out of 5 stars Movie Reveiw.......2007-05-30

I ordered this movie without having ever seen it before. I got it, watched it, and was pretty disappointed. It was so boring I coulden't get through the whole movie.

    Description

At a rundown bus station in rural Cuba, the line of passengers waiting just keeps getting longer. The problem is that every bus that passes by is already full. Their only hope is to wait for the station's bus to be fixed. As the disparate group settles in, relationships start forming between the passengers: Emilio (Vladimir Cruz), a young engineer, becomes smitten with a beautiful young woman (Thaimi Alvarino) who is en route to meet her Spanish fiancé, a blind man (Jorge Perugorria) gets support from the others to go to the head of the line. Frustration and disorder reign when the one bus brakes down and no one can leave. Resigned to working together, the group magically transforms the station into a beautiful place where no one wants to leave. Award-winning director Juan Carlos Tabío (Strawberry and Chocolate) successfully blends magical realism and social commentary in this crowd-pleasing romantic comedy. 5 out of 5 stars Juan Carlos Tabýo has done it again .......2006-04-09

In case you are not familiar with the name, it was Juan Carlos Tab?o who co-directed Tom?s Guti?rrez Alea's last two films ("Strawberry & Chocolate" and "Guantanamera"). I highly recommend THEM as well.

Tab?o's films are definitely NOT for the average audience in the United States. Most of us are too braindead to appreciate his brilliant creativity and his subtle messages. But for those of us old enough to appreciate the films created in Hollywood prior to Star Wars, and for those of us who appreciate slightly offbeat plots and outstanding character development, Juan Carlos Tab?o's films are a treasure.

Tab?o is a genius whose comprehension of human nature is as keen as Steinbeck's. But that is where the similarity ends. His sense of irony takes his plots into the realm of "theatre of the absurd". Or is it just the absurdity of LIFE that accomplishes this FOR him? Here, passengers are trapped in a remote bus terminal -- the buses always pass full, and none of the awaiting passengers can board. They are stranded. And how they -- as typically resourceful Cubans -- deal with this situation is the rest of the story, part of it dream, and part of it real, but ... which is WHICH? And once they DO get the chance to leave the terminal, do they really WANT to? Or have the relationships they've established become more enduring than the one's they knew outside of the terminal? Is the terminal a microcosmic analogy for the island of Cuba itself? Determine that for yourself as you enjoy this brilliantly conceived and brilliantly produced movie.

This is a heavy film, but with plenty of humourous moments. It includes many of Cuba's finest actors, and a script written by one of the greatest directors in the world. DON'T MISS IT.

    5 out of 5 stars A Lesson for Life.......2005-07-21

This movie develops in a Cuban Bus Terminal when a bunch of people find themselves stocked there because the only autobus available for service is broken. With no other choice, the terminal is now their home. For me, it was like the cuban version of "The Terminal". The film contains a pretty straightforward message: A Happy life is not about what you have, it is about what you share.

5 out of 5 stars An Allegory of the Potential Latent in Common Interest.......2005-03-21

Waiting List is an excellent allegory on how the recognition of common interest, especially under conditions of scarcity, can naturally lead to collective action that benefits all in ways not imagined initially.

The movie opens at a bus station where would-be passengers selfishly compete for the few seats on the buses that stop at the station en route to other destinations. The figure of the scarcities produced by capitalist economies is obvious.

The bus station has its own bus, but it is broken down. The necessity of repairing the bus, as well as finding food to feed everyone stranded at the bus station for several days, causes the would-be passengers to move from understanding their interests individually and selfishly to understanding them collectively. Once they realize their interests collectively, the characters and their aspirations are transformed in a manner that seems natural.

At first a few qualified leaders emerge to harness the collective will and interests of the passengers by motivating them and providing them direction. However, in due course the leadership "withers away" because the passengers begin to actualize their unique talents and potential for the common good--abilities, in some cases, that have lain dormant for years. This is an apparent analogy to the Marxist belief that socialist societies will require the direction of a vanguard of communist visionaries and leaders until a communist societies evolve which require no leadership at all. In my view, the plot's ability to allegorize the naturalness of this evolution is its best achievement.

In time the passengers transform the bus station physically and spiritually as well. The bus station ceases to be a point of departure and becomes a point of arrival because the passengers discover community, solidarity, love and sustenance simply by pursuing their common interests collectively. The bus station becomes home, and the passengers want to remain in the community that the bus station provides because the solidarity and equality they've discovered is now understood as what they've really wanted all of their lives. The movie pulls all of this off masterfully.

But then the film surprises us. We discover that the events (the substance of the allegory) were a collective dream held by the passengers during the course of one night. Yet the dream alone, absent its realization, benefits the passengers in obvious ways. They now relate to one another out of their awakened sense of common interest and altruism as demonstrated by the help they provide one another to travel to their separate destinations. In essence, once the film persuades us that this communistic society was real, it then jolts us with the realization that such a society is as yet an unrealized dream. We are brought back to reality (to the circumstances that opened the film), but now reality is charged with the potential of collective fulfillment.

I have one issue with the film. During the dream sequence, one of the characters dies. The death seems to have no purpose other than to make the film's message about the possibility of collective fulfillment explicit during the stationmaster's eulogy. The film could trust itself more. It doesn't need to explicitly "tell" us its message. It has masterfully shown us its message already.

This is another Cuban film of remarkable acting, direction, subtlety and insight. It is well worth purchasing.

    5 out of 5 stars A Major Message from a Simple Story.......2005-03-08

Writer/Director Juan Carlos Tabio ('Strawberry and Chocolate', 'Guantanamera', etc) brings to Cuban cinema a very special quality of color and light that makes the people of this island appear to have their priorities better in line than in countries without the problems of dictatorship. Written with Senel Paz based on a story by Arturo Aranjo, WAITING LIST is a film about how people respond under less than positive circumstances and how such interaction produces community and understanding and love.

Set in a dilapidated seaside bus station Tabio sets in motion his story with the arrival of Emilio (Vladimir Cruz - memorable for his work with Tabio in 'Strawberry and Chocolate'), a handsome and kind Engineer who, having agreed to work his ailing father's farm until he can afford to return to his career for which he has been studying, seeks to travel to his country home. The station is full of irate people, each arguing a case for who should be first on the next bus to pass through. It seems the station's own bus is inoperable and the people must wait for the rare other buses to take them to Havana or to Santiago.

The group of people include a variety of ages, many who have lost their dreams, some who are belligerently self-centered, a 'blind man' Rolando (Jorge Perugorria - also from 'Strawberry and Chocolate') who is faking being blind to gain favor with the others, a bruja who guarantees resolution to any problems by using her herbs, two men who appear inseparable and very young in their view of life, mothers with children, retired couples missing the love of youth, etc. The stationmaster tries to calm the crowd, finally 'fixing 'the station bus, only to have it collapse again!

Emilio and Rolando slowly engage the stranded folk and convince them the bus can be fixed. During all this time Emilio has his eye on Jacqueline (Thaimi Alvarino - a very fine and sensuous actress) who is panicked that she will not make it to Havana to me her fiancé who is coming from Madrid to marry her: Jacqueline is obviously likewise attracted to the handsome kind stranger! Once the focus of the mission to repair the bus is established, the newly friendly folk set about to make the best of what they have. Night comes, all sleep, and at this point Tabio transforms his story with Latin American Magical Realism that is as tender, celebratory and lovely as any on film.

The ending of the story has to do with waking up to reality and how the shared dream has transformed the lives of everyone. To say more would dispel some of the magic this film holds. The acting is superb, the atmosphere is both very real and very imagined, and it all works extremely well. This little film is a breath of fresh Caribbean air! Grady Harp, March 05

5 out of 5 stars BEST CUBAN FILM SINCE MEMORIES OF THE UNDER DEVELOPMENT.......2004-11-25

It is a testament to the producers and writers they were able to do this film in a way that did not ruffle the feathers of state sensors. The movie is a delightful story for all ages and is able to poke fun at how people living in a dysfunctional governmental system are able to over come challenges. Films such as these show that big budgets do not always equal big quality. Hollywood can learn from the Third World Film Industry.

Very strange movie, kind of off-the-beam, but that's OK. It's very worthwhile if you're a Dayton Callie fan. He wrote the script and has a good-sized part in the film.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not great.......2005-11-06

So whaddya get when you put Dennis Hopper, Darryl Hannah, Michael Madsen, and Kiefer Sutherland in a mob comedy-drama? The Last Days of Frankie the Fly. The title character, played by Hopper, is a kind of zhlub (Yiddish for semi-putz. Oops, that's also Yiddish. Well, you know, a sort of nebbish. Is that Yiddish also? OK. Sorry. A meek guy who doesn't do much. How's that?) who's the gofer for local small time mob boss Sal, played by Michael Madsen in another of his smarmy nasty roles.

Madsen's type casting does him proud, but it's interesting to see Hopper cast somewhat against type as a meek guy. Now add in the mix Darryl Hannah as a porn actress (OK, she's not the greatest actress in the world, but she's actually OK here) and Kiefer Sutherland as a porn movie "director" (an NYU Film School graduate, no less), and there's your recipe for...well, not disaster really, but a relatively enjoyable little crime drama that confines its action to romance, murder, torture, and humiliation, rather than tackle the big issues like corruption and desperation.

So it's not exactly noir per se, but on the other hand it's decent. Hopper falls in love with Hannah, who's a lot more intelligent than the typical porn actress, constantly berated by Sutherland, who's a gambling addict, in hock to Sal (Madsen) to the tune of more than 100 G's. Hopper agrees to place some bets for Sutherland at the track provided that Hopper can write and direct a film for Hannah.

Sal complicates things by being brutal and nasty, ably abetted by his henchman Vic, played by Damon Callie, who also wrote the script. OK, sure, this is not a cinematic masterpiece. But there are a lot worse ways to spend an hour and a half of your time. The most fun is watching the four leads do their thing; especially in the early part of the film, Sutherland is hilarious with his rapid fire sarcastic jabs. And Hopper is fine in his part as well.

As mentioned, not a great film, but worth seeing.

          Description

High-class call girl Gabrielle (Madchen Amick) stages her own arrest in a scheme to blackmail her well-known clients, including respected lawyers, honorable judges and even the Governor. The list is submitted as evidence in court and presiding judge, Richard Miller (Ryan O'Neal), is thrown into a moral dilemma. He can make the list public, incriminating friends and colleagues, or he can seal the list and keep its secrets. Whatever he chooses, someone's going to lose and there are people willing to commit murder to stay unnamed.
