Perhaps the Greatest Vampire Movie of all Time.......2007-06-12

Fright Night is a horror movie in its most simplistic form. A teenage boy named Charlie Brewster (William Ragsdale, "Herman's Head") believes that his next door neighbor Jerry Dandridge (Chris Sarandon, "The Princess Bride") is a vampire. Of course no one believes him, especially his girlfriend Amy (Amanda Bearse, "Married with Children") and his buddy "Evil" Ed (Stephen Geoffreys, "Heaven Help Us"). Oh by the way, Evil Ed's classic line in this movie is, "Oh you're so cool Brewster."

Amy and Ed are concerned about Charlie's well being and figure humor his claims that his neighbor is a vampire. So Amy and Ed go to speak to Peter "The Great Vampire Killer" Vincent (Roddy McDowall, "Planet of the Apes"), a burnt out horror movie star turned late night T.V. show host for campy horror films (mainly his own). Charlie is a huge fan of Peter Vincent's work and conceders him a hero. This is why Charlie's friends seek Peter out. On the flip side, Amy and Ed are thinking Charlie's imagination is running amuck about Jerry because of all of his Peter Vincent viewing. Anyway I digress; Amy and Ed talk to Peter about their friend Charlie and the obsession that Jerry is a vampire. Now how two teenage kids are able to convince a movie star (burnt out or not) to speak with their "potential" insane friend, still befuddles me. Anyway, after some pretty definitive proof, it is discovered that Jerry REALLY IS A VAMPIRE! Charlie's confirmation is now fact and the other characters are quite shocked at this finding.

I will not give away any details or spoil this flick for anyone who hasn't seen it yet. Fright Night is really a fun movie and yes it does have some creepy and scary parts to it. I will also add that the movie has some pretty good special effects, they really aren't that cheesy. This movie was also made in 1985, which is the zenith of the 1980s, however this movie really doesn't seem dated. As a matter of fact, it is quite possible this movie is as relative today as it was back in 1985. The one part of the movie that could be abased for having a 1980s flare is the night club scene. There is the peachy music, "colorful" outfits and the hair sprayed hair. Then again, 1980s fashion is somewhat neo in these contemporary times, so it might not seem so dastardly. Ultimately, this movie isn't overshadowed by the fact that it was made in the 1980s.

Now when I say that this is the best vampire movie ever made, that is exactly what I mean. This movie has nothing to do with Dracula it is a basic vampire movie, so any comparisons with a Dracula is dubious. Hence Fright Night it is a marvelous vampire movie, not a marvelous Dracula Movie.

The acting in this movie is also really good; Chris Sarandon is smooth and suave as a vampire. He makes being a creature of the undead look like a lot of fun. Roddy McDowall is awesome as Peter Vincent (I love the throwback to Peter Cushing and Vincent Price in the character's name); he is dichotomy in his grapples with believing in vampires and faith. I think this was a bold performance by McDowall. William Ragsdale did a good job as Charlie. He looked a bit older than a 17 year old teenager, but then again this type of realism isn't why I am watching Fright Night. If that was the logic, then Elizabeth Shue was way too hot to be a hooker in Leaving Las Vegas. Consequently, these are the little persnickety thoughts I place into the box labeled "it is only a movie". Amanda Bearse was also fine as Amy, being both reserved and sexy. Stephen Geoffreys was also quite vexing in a jovial sort of way in his performance as Evil Ed. I also like how Jerry's "roommate" looks like a Xerox of Bill Paxton. Did anyone else notice that or was it just me?

As for the DVD itself, it is presented in letterbox/widescreen. There are several subtitles that can be utilized, so it is foreign speaking friendly. The original preview/trailer is included, which is somewhat a disappointment. It seems rather a mundane promotion for such a great movie. Nevertheless, it is cool that the trailer itself is included on the DVD.

Fright Night is great horror movie period. It also spawned a pretty good sequel in Fright Night 2. However, Fright Night stands fine by itself and I wish future vampire movies would use this movie as a paradigm. Mainly by having a basic story, good characters/acting performance and special effects that don't totally rely on computer graphics. Overall, a timeless piece of horror cinema which I am sure will still be enjoyed for many years to come.

Classic Horror, 80s Cheese.......2007-06-08

Ol' Charlie has a new neighbor and he turns out to be a blood sucking monster. No one believes Charlie. Not his mother, the police, or his girlfriend. They all believe he is crazy. If only they were right.

This is a horror classic from the mind of Tom Holland (Child's Play). If you've never seen this 80s incarnation of vampire cinema then you've been deprived. Before Vamp and the Lost Boys was the original horror comedy involving teens and the undead.

Wickedly campy romp!.......2007-06-04

This is one of the most memorable horror movies from the 80s, not because it was super scary or anything but because it was such a fun vampire flick. Charlie [William Ragsdale] is a horror buff who is convinced that his new next-door neighbor, Jerry Dandridge is a vampire. He tries to convince his girlfriend Amy [Amanda Bearse] and his best friend Evil to no avail. His last hope is Peter Vincent [Roddy McDowall] a TV actor who plays a vampire killer. The rest of the story deals with their efforts in tracking down and killing the vampire. The acting here is above average, and each character is memorable. William Ragsdale brings a certain earnestness to his role as Charlie, and Amanda Bearse plays the role of love interest to Charlie & Dandridge convincingly. However, the best role is the one of Jerry Dandridge, played most convincingly by Chris Sarandon. He is wickedly evil, with a wry sense of humor and dashing countenance.The storyline may have flaws in it, but this is just a fun vampire movie that should be enjoyed for what it is.

Great 80s horror film.......2007-05-13

As someone who saw almost horror movie made in the 80s, I can tell you that this is one of the better ones. It combines horror and comedy incredibly well and the older actors(Roddy McDowall and Chris Sarandon) deliver incredible spot on performances. The younger group do a good job as well, though they have their moments of "roughness". If you enjoy a great horror movie that is also very funny at the same time(purposely, not campy)...this is the movie for you.

My favorite vampire movie from the 80s.......2007-04-26

Who doesn't like Fright Night?...I haven't met one person yet that didn't enjoy Fright Night. I for one, love this movie and think its one of the best vampire movies from the 80s. Its kinda hard to believe that Amanda Bearse went from this..to Married..with Children....holy smokes!..lol...anyways, again as i said, this movie tops the 80s horror right along with Halloween..etc. etc. and should truly be in your horror collection..a true classic for all time, and remember, they barely play this film during Halloween as well...when is the last time you saw it on TV?...think about it!..thats why this is a must have!. Highly Recommended!!

This unusual film begins deceptively, seeming to be yet another high-tech spy flick laden with futuristic weaponry, computers running top-secret software (with the requisite flashy graphics), and the talented actor Patrick Stewart slumming at the center of a nonsensical mishmash. Stewart's presence itself is something of a tip-off, but when his character is soon glimpsed hanging upside down from an exercise device, watching a wall of security cam monitors while quoting H.L. Mencken, it's apparent that this isn't just another action film with an outsized firearms budget. In fact, nothing much seems to be what it appears. Mace Sowell, Stewart's character, claims to be a retired intelligence agent, but his daughter, who doesn't believe a word of it, trots him around to a succession of skeptical shrinks. And while his daughter interviews potential caretakers for her apparently deranged father, Sowell is viewed through the patio doors of his lavish house taking rather acrobatic target practice in the back yard. There is the plot of a thriller in all of this, but make no mistake about it, the most entertaining aspect of this quirky film is watching Stewart have a wonderful time playing an endearing curmudgeon who might be the craziest man alive, or perhaps a totally rational man who really does know some secrets that put himself and others in danger. --Robert J. "James Bond gets old".......2007-01-15

That's the premise of this little made-for-cable gem, according to the writer / director, and it's a pretty cool exploration of the idea. Patrick Stewart is never less than convincing, either as a retired military intelligence legend obsessed with his own security, or as an old man whose mind is failing long before his body.

Suppose Sean Connery's Bond had aged gracefully, settled down somewhere and tried to live a normal life. Would he still be spending his evenings with lovely ladies and vodka martinis? Or would he be a prisoner of his own past, constantly fearful that all his old enemies would come back to haunt him? And what if his friends and family didn't really believe he'd ever had those grand old adventures?

The beauty of 'Safe House' is that there's no evidence to support the lead character's paranoid claims of government conspiracy, and it's entirely possible that he's imagining the whole thing. Yet the film keeps flirting with the possibility that his fears are real, teasing us with suggestions of menace that never entirely come to fruition. Is there a true danger, or is it all in his mind?

Watching 'Safe House', we don't find out...until the very last scene. I wouldn't dream of letting you know which it is in this review.

A little gem of a film.......2006-05-07

I enjoyed seeing Patrick Stewart portray a wide gamut of human eperience and emotion, embedded in a gripping story with a sharp twist at the end. He demonstrates the terror and grief that can be brought only by the knowledge that one is slowly but surely losing one's mind and one's self, while at the same time fighting to do the right thing with the secret information he holds in fear of his life.

This DVD is a must have for every Stewart fan.

Effective combination of psycological drama & spy thriller........2006-03-13

Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard from Star Trek) plays a retired security agent who's developing Alzheimer's disease. He plays wargames & simulations to keep his mind sharp, and believes he's the victim of a conspiracy. His well-intentioned daughter hires a new housekeeper to watch after him, and after a rough start, they seem to make friends. But it's increasingly less clear whether all of his suspicions are unfounded, and gradually becomes more intriguing, both a psychological drama and suspense thriller.

I must admit I thought this movie was going to be hokey when I purchased it. I purchased it strictly for Patrick Stewart since I've been a fan of his for years. Surprisingly, the movie is great and of course Stewart is great in it. I highly recommend the film to those who are also Stewart fans and to those who enjoy a film that is a little off beat and not too predictable. It is comical, suspenseful, and touching all at the same time.

My admiration of Sophia Loren borders on idolatry. Though she will not go down in history as one of our great actresses she was not bad in the movie.
Eduardo Ponti made this movie with his mother in it and it is decisively a success. I loved the subtle play of relationships and experiences that are all too familiar to us. It is a lovely gentle movie in which the characters remains true to themselves and the story line is soft. I appreciate that the movie goer's intellect are not doubted by spelling/blaring/yelling out the plot or clues. We are trusted to pick them up ourselves and interpret them as we wish.
This movie is a true celebration of woman without needing to burn the bra.

Sophia Loren in "Between Strangers".......2005-10-05

I found this to be a very experimental and unusual
concept for a drama. It's always a visual treat to see a
fine performance from Sophia Loren. Her dramatic range
has expanded in her later years, lending pathos to a film
which features frankly depressing subject matter. While
the three protagonists escape their circumstantial and
unfulfilled lives rooted in unhappy relationships with their
fathers or spouses, that escape doesn't occur until the
very very end of the drama, painting the experience in very
gloomy colors. The concept of the three parallel lives is an
interesting one and I wondered throughout if the director,
Edoardo Ponti might be the now adult son of Sophia Loren.
I'm sure he's some relationship to Carlo Ponti. I enjoyed
Between Strangers, but it wasn't thrilling.

Three Women, Sins and Forgiveness: Familiar But Well-Acted .......2005-07-12

Set in modern-day's Toronto, 'Between Strangers' follows the lives of three women loosely connected to each other, played by Sophia Loren, Mira Sorvino, and Deborah Kara Unger. The film's director Edoardo Ponti is the son of Ms. Loren.

Mira Sorvino is a successful journalist Natalia, whose recent photo shot in Angora is nationally praised, and was even used for the cover of Time maganize. But Natalia is still tormented by the sense of guilt, for she thinks she could have done something to the little girl instead of taking photos, even though she was in the war.

Deborah Kara Unger is renowned cellist Catherine, who has run away from her husband and daughter, and keeping herself aloof from others, she is thinking about plans that have something to do with one aged male (Malcolm McDowell) who has just come out of the jail. And Catherine is holding a loaded gun.

And Sophia Loren is a timid housewife Olivia, who works at a grocery store, and is married to John, a grim-faced man in wheelchair (Pete Postleswaite). One day, as you and her friend Max (Gerald Depardieu) will find in the nearby park, Olivia has been seeing in her dreams the dark figures coming out of rocks, and is drawing the pictures of them on paper. Later, as you know, we come to realize the real meaning of them.

The three stories are interwoven deftly, and the characters including the supporting ones are memorable. The acting is unanimously good, but the most impressive is naturally Sophia Loren, who has literally become an ordinary wife. Olivia has buried her own dream in the past, decided to live a stiflingly dismal life with her husband, and is still aware that her life is lacking something vital, and as the other two women do, she finally finds what to do in the end.

Sadly, however, the ingredients themselves in this film -- like journalist's ethics, troubled relations with father, or anything else -- are all nothing new to me, and though the script about sins and forgiveness is well-crafted, and eveything goes smooth and fits in the right place, I for one needed something more, something unique.

Maybe I have complaints about the film because I have seen films like 'Short Cuts' or 'Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her.' But Sophia Loren is another story, and her acting alone can make this film worth your money and time.

Fate's intersections!.......2005-02-13

Three stories leaded by women. Three solvent actresses will make the best she can to solve her ethical and problems. Three different occupations: the devoted wife and her invalid husband, the winner photographer of the year and a cellist who faces a brutal drama familiar will fight against her fears, disappointments and disillusions with conviction, honesty following her respective bliss.

It's remarkable to underline the smart device of the phantom girl who appears in dramatic moments was used previously by Kieslowski in his masterwork: Decalogue.
Another important issue: the attack to the old man: Malcom Mc Dowell works out a incisive destiny irony due precisely Mac Dowell thirty three years before in the Clockwork Orange plays a similar role but from the other side of the street when he makes the same against an indigent in the park with his fellow friends.

The presence of Klaus Maria Bandauer and Gerard Depardieu add this artwork film another quality seal . Mira Sorvino makes a convincing role as the winner who suddenly realizes the slender difference between duty and ethic. Loren displays all her experience in a devastating revelation

"Between Strangers" was an incredibly moving film, and I am glad to have had the opportunity to see it.

It's In 3-D!!! But You Ain't Gonna See It!!.......2007-06-16

I'd really like to say some good things about Amityville 3-D, but who am I kidding? It sucks. Now, I understand that Part 3s must be an awful thing for a director to sign on for. Inheriting an film series must be pretty tough, and by the time you get to a Part 3 of something, you're most likely gonna be going over ground covered before...and covered better at that. And in dealing with a series that involves a haunted house, your options are quite limited. I mean really, what can you do? Well, why not do it in 3-D? That's really the only thing this movie has going for it, and it's not even available on this dvd. I don't mind a plot being rehashed(if I did, I certainly wouldn't own the Friday The 13th box set), but if you're gonna do it, you should at least put some flair in it. In this film, Woody Allen regular Tony Roberts plays a reporter who likes to expose fake psychics and hauntings. This is to assure us that we're really dealing with skeptical man who's gonna be tough to break. He winds up buying the Amityville house coz it's cheap, available and no one wants it(kinda like alot of chicks I've dated). After he's moved in, we get the usual Amityville shenanigans, but without any creepiness or zip. Hell, even if it were so bad it was funny, at least that could be something worthwhile. Problem is, it's just bad, period. Boring too. This time around, the house actually attacks people and kills them. This is a first in the series(possessing the kid in part 2 doesn't count). Plus, it seems to be able to kill people away from the house. How about them apples? There are a few decent scenes that spark a bit of hope, but it's all too little, too late. A ghostly apparition of Lori Loughlin(remember? Uncle Jessie's chick from Full House?) walking through the house while she actually lies dying outside is okay. And the grand finale where a rubber demon jumps out of the glowing well in the basement and spits fire into Robert Joy's face is a bit of silly fun(the demon is the coolest thing in the movie and you see it for about 4 seconds). Joy's scream is priceless. Plus, I do remember the old vhs box for this film having a cool looking cover with a demon hand coming out at you from the house. Otherwise, you'd do well to leave this one alone. Unless you're a hardcore Tony Roberts fan, that is, and who isn't? Still I'd think about it.

3.35 STARS: Certainly not great but does not get the credit it deserves........2007-03-19

After the brilliant sequel to this series, "Amityville 3" is clearly a step down and a big one at that. However, "Amityville 3" is not as bad as some people would make it out to be. In fact, "Amityville 3" succeeds on an important level where so many horror movies fail in creating an effective horror movie atmosphere conduicive to a good movie about a haunted house. There is no question that "Amityville 3" is not nearly as good as "Amityville II: The Possession", but the movie picks up the haunted house theme quite well and provides the viewer with a nice little horror movie experience.

In "Amityville 3", Tony Roberts stars as an agnostic journalist who unwittingly decides to purchase the Amityville house and live in it notwithstanding the house's dark history. Roberts' character does not believe in the house, but the Amityville house will make a believer out of Roberts' character by the end of the movie. Clearly, it is Roberts' character's disbelief versus the evil that resides in the Amityville house that drives this film. Roberts' character must pay a hefty price for his naivety and close-mindedness.

"Amityville 3" a/k/a "Amityville: The Demon" solidifies the idea that something evil resides deep within the Amityville house, and presents this theme to the audience quite effectively. In fact, "Amityville 3" seems to pick up on the idea developed by "Amityville II: The Possession" that a demon actually dwells within the Amityville house walls which obviously is a "pathway to hell", perhaps the same demon that possessed Sonny in part two of this series. At any rate, Roberts' character confronts the Amityville house head on and bad things start to happen, and people start to die as well. Can Roberts' character stop the evil from inside the Amityville house before its too late? Will Roberts' character realize the evil that lurks within the basement of the Amityville house before he loses everything?

"Amityville 3" is no classic by any stretch of the imagination, but this movie stays within itself and does not try to do too much as the creepy atmosphere, some unexplained horrible deaths and the reputation of the Amityville house itself are quite enough to keep a serious horror movie fan interested. One thing that is characteristic of the Amityville house is its evil essence which only works to propel the action and suspense of "Amityville 3". The only criticisms with this movie are with regard to the acting which is average for this type of flick and the ending which I did not like as I thought it was rather unimaginative and cliche-esque for lack of a better term, but, nevertheless, the viewer should be free to draw his own conclusions and opinions regarding the ending of the film. All and all, this is a relatively solid horror flick and a worthy sequel which compares rather favorably to today's garbage that Hollywood calls "horror movies".

Nowhere near as good as the UK version........2006-09-25

There was a version released in the UK and it includes an excellent 3-D DVD extra disc, you need the right TV to play it but it looks fanatastic. Go for that one instead.

Meg Ryan, Haunted Houses, Killer Flies, and 3-D.......2006-08-31

This movie is not as bad as everyone says. As a matter of fact it is a guilty pleasure. Not a whole lot of people talk about Meg Ryan as a young white trash ghost hunter in this film.And they fail to mention her terrible haircut. There are some genuine scenes in the film that made me jump. Doors slamming open, suprises behind doors. The scene where Meg Ryan says "whoo ooo" into the well (supposed gate to hell) in the basement, and a voice moans back from the well is chill inducing. This looks like a Lucio Fulci movie (The Beyond, Gates of Hell, Zombi), as in the dark mood of the film. Maybe that is why I like it so much. The opening seance scene is effective and filmed quite well. However there are some laughable moments which include:the flies in the attic, followed by the over-acted death of the fat man. The out of control elevator is also funny. Some of the score music sounds like it should be from a comedy film. And you can see the strings attached to the stuff that flies at the camera for the 3-d effect. This is a fun film with a dark mood, very appropriate for halloween time.

Amityville III: The Demon (aka Amityville 3-D) (1983).......2006-08-02

In 1983, AMITYVILLE III: THE DEMON (aka AMITYVILLE 3-D) came our way as the third rendevous in the whole AMITYVILLE franchise. Now, the first two films were based on the actual events of the Amityville murders. This film is, indeed, a sequel, but the events that go on in this film, are ficticious. This film was not as good as the first two, but I still enjoyed this film to a rather good extent, but I wish it had been more terrifyingly scary, as the first two had been.

Ignoring the house's sinister evil past, JOHN BAXTER (played by Tony Roberts) unwittingly buys the Amityville house on 112 Ocean Ave., after being divorced from his b*tch of a wife, NANCY (played by Tess Harper). John has bought this house for the solitude he needs in order to write his first novel. John also has another profession, dealing with supernatural investigation. His partner in that business is MELANIE (played by Candy Clark). One afternoon, Melanie heads over to the house to meet John there, but she has an encounter with the house's evil, where she runs out of the house, after John arrives. He talks to her about it, but he can get out of her is that she knows there's something in that house that is pure evil.

John's beautiful daughter, SUSAN (played by Lori Loughlin), and her friend, LISA (played by a young Meg Ryan), go into the house and look around, where Lisa tells Susan about the DeFeo's, who murdered by their oldest son, Ronald. They head into the basement, and find a well, where the evil is contained. As they look at the well, while talking about the murders, they begin hearing footsteps right above them and over to the basement stairs. The footsteps belong to John. The girls are relieved.

That night, Melanie leaves the house and heads on home, but on her way, Melanie is locked in her car, where she suddenly catches on fire, and burns to death. Coincidentally, the man who sold John the house, had also been killed, but a sworm of flies. Seems as though, whoever comes in contact with John and the house, ends up with a brutal demise.

The next afternoon, Susan, Lisa, and their friends, head over to the house. They hold a seance, where they ask if there is anybody in danger. The cup moves towards "Yes". They ask who it is that is in danger. The cup begins to spell out Susan's name. The drop the seance and head out into a boat (since the house is by a river). Nancy arrives at the house, knowing Susan is there. As she enters the hosue, Susan comes into the house, soaked from head to toe. Nancy tries to get Susan's attention, but Susan will not answer. She only turns to her mother once, smiles, and then heads up to her room. She tries to get Susan to unlock the door, be she won't open the door. At that moment, John drives up with a couple bags of groceries. He finds Lisa and her friends pulling someone out of the water. He runs over and finds that is...Susan being pulled out of the water. Susan had mysteriously fallen out of the boat and into the water and drowned. What Nancy saw was Susan's ghost, which is now being taken over by the house's evil. Nancy refuses to believe all this, which is her reason for not going to her own daughter's funeral.

John knows something is in the house. He has his team of supernatural investigators come to the house and set up. The team is lead by ELLIOT WEST (played by Robert Joy). They find that the evil is in the well, located in the basement. Nancy is in Susan's room, where she hears Susan's voice, where a blue figure appears, and leads Nancy down into the basement. The evil comes out and pretty much kills off everybody in the house, except for John and Nancy, who escape the house, safely, where the house then explodes.

This was not the best and scariest installment to the whole series, but there are five other films to be included in this whol franchise. I won't lie to you, this film was not that great, but it certainly was not bad, either. You should definitely check it out.

Robin Cook is the prolific author of several medical thrillers, in which medicine goes wrong, and the hero/heroine have to face the dire consequences. In ACCEPTABLE RISK, we are introduced to the story via a 1709 hanging of a woman suspected of being a witch. In fact, twelve of these damsels hung that day. Fast forward to the future and we meet idealistic Dr. Chad Rowe, and his lovely wife, Kelly Rutherford who have just inherited the house of the long dead witch. While renovating the house, Lowe discovers a shimmery mold and takes it to his lab, and finds out it has some unusually powerful capabilities: it intensifies his emotions, and seems to cure brain damage such as in Alzheimers. He secretly starts ingesting the formula he's made from the mold, called Ultra, and starts experiencing some of these effects. Needless to say, things start going wrong, and then he decides to enlist other team members to come up with a viable potion.
Lowe and Rutherford do well in their roles, Rutherford looking like a young Judith Light, and Lowe a young Rob Lowe. (Ha ha). Add Sean Patrick Flannery as friend Bobby, who seems to have been a little loose cannon anyway, and you have the ingredients for medical mayhem.
This is a made for TV movie, but its production values are good and I found it intriguing and entertaining.

Really enjoyed this album. I loved to see his family and home and he seems genuine in his faith. That makes me like his music even more. The music is found on other albums but put on this DVD in a nice package.

The styles are varied in this wonderful show, but the quality always high, with renditions of familiar classics along with a few original songs, with some numbers that are truly thrilling, among them the opening song, a bluegrass flavored "It's a Time for Joy" with Karen Peck and New River, the Gaither Vocal Band with David Phelps doing an exquisite tenor solo on "The Christmas Song" (and Mark Lowry doing Johnny Mathis !), "Children Go Where I Send Thee" with The Bishops giving us harmonies from heaven, the country rockin' sound of "Go Tell" with The Martins, and best of all, "Mary, Did You Know ?" (music and lyrics by Mark Lowry and Buddy Green), sung by the Gaither Vocal Band featuring an emotionally stirring solo by Mark Lowry. The words, melody, and interpretation of this song fills my eyes with tears when I hear it...the disc is worth it for this number alone.

The music is so inspired, I probably would have preferred less humor...one segment in particular isn't that funny and has a "secular entertainment" feel to it, but that is a minor quibble when compared to the overwhelming spirit of this disc, which I'll enjoy any time of the year, with the musicians and singers giving 100% of their talent, and moving one to praise and worship the Lord, in the true spirit of Christmas.
The show was filmed in the Alabama Theater, a lovely ornate theater in Birmingham, Alabama, in 2001, and total running time is 90 minutes.
The DVD extras include an interesting piece titled "Project Spotlight" with people like Joni Eareckson Tada, and subtitles are also available.

Propoganda film has nice bits, but does not fare well with time........2007-02-13

In 1943 this episodic story tells the history of Britain by following the history of a house and the two families whose lives were entwined with it. This RKO film opens by saying that it was collaborative effort of many studios. Having more than 30 major stars, many of them Brits, and listing 7 directors, its stated purpose is to serve as a tribute to "united effort" clearly an implicit allusion to the United States joining in WWII.

The opening drags a bit, an American in war torn England making the moves on a practical, modest Greer Garson-esque British young woman - .who just happens to own the painting he has come to negotiate for. At a point in their conversation, they stand on a porch, and she talks of wanting to know the people who lived there before; it is an effecting moment, where suddenly the camera pulls blocks away to show the buildings on the horizon on fire.

Many wonderful little performance light up the moving history show, Merle Oberon and Ida Lupino fare particularly well. Still, the overview is so enormous, and the film just regular length, so there really is not much to hold on to, making the film feel both slight and too long, simultaneously.

As the purpose of this film was to link us in sympathy, the script works in the English emigration to America, as well as vastly downplaying the class system. There are no scenes here of lush, lavish aristocracy that Americans have come to dote on via the BBC miniseries of today. The focus is on everyone just trying to get by in everyday life - "they're just like us."

In this film they're a little too much like us. We never did go to the movies to spend 10 minutes bothering with bathtubs and plumbing. A dated piece of propaganda that reminded us -even then - how many of our familiar film actors were British imports.

Values To Fight For, With A Great Cast.......2005-05-29

This is the story of a London house, from when it was built in 1804 as Napoleon was threatening to invade England, to the height of the blitz when Hitler was threatening to invade England. It's the story of the people who built house, who lived in it through the generations. It also is a valentine from Hollywood to the people of Britain to let them know their bravery and steadfastness is recognized and understood in America. The Hollywood studios collaborated on the film, allowing dozens of British actors, writers and directors in Hollywood, many under contract, to volunteer their talents: Directors like Rene Clair, Victor Saville, Alfred Hitchcock, Edmund Goulding; writers like Christopher Isherwood, James Hilton, John Van Druten; actors like Charles Laughton, Merle Oberon, Herbert Marshall, Anna Neagle, C. Aubrey Smith, Ray Milland, Ida Lupino, Claude Raines. The list of actors alone, some in quick cameos, others as major players in the story, numbers well over 100. Surprisingly, the movie manages to tell a coherent story.

One night in the middle of a German bombing attack, an American named Gates Trimble Pomfret (Kent Smith) finds his way to Number 6 Pomfret Street. At the behest of his father he wants to sell the old house to the young woman now living in it, Lesley Trimble (Ruth Warrick). He and his father have no use for old houses. He meets Miss Trimble in an underground shelter which can be accessed through the home's basement. Londoners are singing songs to keep up their spirit as the bombs fall. She lets him into the house and tries to explain why she wants to buy the place. She starts to tell him the history and says that somehow the people who lived here were all people she'd like to have known...and we flashback to 1804. Old Admiral Eustace Trimble buys land to build his house, a house meant to last. He builds it of stone and brick and timber. Even if Napoleon invades, he says, he and his family and his house will fight on to repel the invaders. He sets his house on the ancient fortifications built by Caractacus, who fought to repel the Roman invaders. In the cellars of his house he places a carved stone in one of the walls. Chiseled in it are the words "Eustace Trimble built this house and wishes well to all who shelter here."

Children are born, tragedy is endured. In time the house is bought by a rapacious squire named Ambrose Pomfret (Claude Raines). It eventually becomes the property of Dexter Pomfret, who in 1847 marries a woman named Mildred Trimble. He and his wife prosper and his son eventually inherits the house. In 1897, the family's maid (Ida Lupino) decides to join her special friend, a mechanic named Jim Trimble (Brian Aherne), a poor distant relative of the Trimbles, to go to America, to work hard and to make a new life. The house is eventually sold as too large and becomes a hotel, a genteel place for genteel people. Assisting to manage it is Marjorie (Merle Oberon), and in 1917 she meets a young yank who has 24 hours leave. His name is Ned Trimble. Later, as a widow, she and her daughter will buy the decrepit old building and try to renovate it. And the daughter, Lesley Trimble, now living in the house by herself, explains all this to Gates Pomfret.

The bombing is getting worse and the two of them return to the shelter. The German bombs strike closer and closer. At the all clear, they discover the house has taken a direct hit. In the ruins still survives the portrait of Admiral Eustace Trimble. Gates, who now realizes what this house has stood for all these years and generations, suddenly says, "Let's build again. He would," and he looks at the admiral. "Yes, he would," Lesley says. "He built a shelter, decency, dignity, everything a home should stand for. Oh, but he'd want to make sure first none of this would happen again." "You bet he would," Gates says to her. "And that's our job...yours and mine."

Sure, the movie is a bit dated, but the acting is great, ranging from Charles Laughton's tipsy butler, C. Aubrey Smith's blustery and brave admiral, to a very funny bit involving Cedric Hardwicke as a Cockney plumber and a silent Buster Keaton as his assistant. The story sequences are well told and interesting. Some are dramatic, some are humorous, some a combination. And they all hit right on the head the message that English values will endure and triumph. Forever and a Day is an unusual and effective piece of movie making. For a movie as old as this one, the DVD picture is in very good shape.

Amazing collection of stars in a classic epic film.......2002-12-08

Forever and a Day is a marvelous, lyrical piece of World War II propaganda that boasts one of the most amazing casts and crew ever assembled for a motion picture.

As the film begins, the Nazis are bombing London and an American visitor, Gates T. Pomfret (Kent Smith), journeys into the city searching for a house his father owns and that the current boarder, Lesley Trimble (Ruth Warrick), wishes to purchase. Gates' sarcastic attitude about the house leads Lesley to relate the history of the manse, and how both of their families have been intertwined since Admiral Trimble (C. Aubrey Smith) built it back in 1804. The house eventually fell into the hands of the Pomfrets, who later leased it out as a hotel during the First World War. Now, the building is only used as a bomb raid shelter.

In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Hollywood was inundated with a phalanx of British actors and directors seeking refuge from the war while continuing the careers. Forever and a Day was specifically designed as a morale booster for the folks back home as well as a bit of propaganda for American audiences. The house, of course, is a metaphor for England herself--stalwart, traditional, broken but defiant and ultimately triumphant. The film combines laughter and tears to achieve its end, and though the fadeout is bittersweet, it's still incredibly uplifting.

To create the film, one of the largest all-star casts imaginable was assembled to portray the various personalities who inhabit the house during the century and a half. Besides those mentioned above, there's also Ray Milland, Victor McLaglan, Anna Neagle, Herbert Marshall, Claude Rains, Dame May Whitty, Gene Lockhart, Anna Lee, Buster Keaton, June Duprez, Nigel Bruce, Elsa Lanchester, Donald Crisp, and many, many others. My favorites in the cast include Smith, who's alternately amusing and moving; Charles Laughton as a tippling butler; Ida Lupino and Brian Aherne as a maid and coal tender (respectively) who develop a romance during Queen Victoria's jubilee; Gladys Cooper and Roland Young as parents awaiting the return of their son from World War I; and Robert Cummings as an American doughboy and Merle Oberon as a hotel secretary who fall in love during that war.

There was an all-star line-up behind the camera as well, with such acclaimed directors as Rene Clair, Edmund Goulding, Cedric Hardwicke, Frank Lloyd, Victor Saville, Robert Stevenson, and Herbert Wilcox. The writing credits are equally diverse, including such names as C.S. Forester, James Hilton, Christopher Isherwood, Donald Ogden Stewart, and John Van Druten. I can't say who wrote or directed which episodes, because it's all been so seamlessly and exquisitely combined.

Students of history and classic film are sure to thrill to Forever and a Day; modern audiences that just like a good story well-told are bound to enjoy it as well.

The DVD is a bare-bones presentation, with just the film and chapter selections. The picture is a bit dark at times, showing its age, but the sound is marvelous.

Struggles To Maintain Your Interest.......2000-06-28

This film suffers slightly from being a product of its times. The Second World War was in full cry and to help raise morale (and money) well-meaning directors and actors got together to make 'Forever and a Day'. In fact the cast list is one of the prime reasons for buying this DVD - it's certainly why I bought it. Jessie Matthews, Elsa Lanchester, Claude Rains, Charles Laughton - even Buster Keaton - they're all here! But you can't escape the feeling that this is a 1940's 'USA for Africa'. Whilst you loved hearing Lionel Ritchie, Michael Jackson & all singing 'We are the World', it was never as good as listening to their solo work. 'Forever and a Day' just has too many actors and directors to produce a fully coherent movie. I may be mistaken, but I'm sure somebody once said of this film 'Never have so many given so much for something so dull'. That's a little harsh but for once I have to disagree with Leonard Maltin and award this only average marks. I'm still glad I have it in my film collection - if only for that great cast and it's historical interest.

One Of The Best Epical Films Yet..........1999-05-06

The British, and some American, cast shines in thiswnderful depiction of a grand English mansion and its inhabitants for over one-hundred years. The scenes of this picture are geniusely executed and planned out to the second! The efforts of actors such as Ray Milland, C. Aubrey Smith and Claude Rains were beyond words.
