5 out of 5 stars Two sitcom veterans, one great sitcom!.......2007-06-12

Yes,two sitcom veterans,Katey Sagal("Married...With Children) and the late John Ritter("Three's Company","Three's A Crowd","Hearts Afire") make this great but short-lived sitcom entitled 8 SIMPLE RULES FOR DATING MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER. Ritter is Paul Hennessy,a sportswriter who is a loving and protective father of two girls, age 16 and 11 or 12. The girls' mother is Paul's wife Cate(Sagal). Paul just typically warns boyfriends to treat his elder daughter with care. This ABC sitcom premiered on Ritter's 54th birthday,September 17,2002. Ritter has many other September family events, those being his widow Amy Yasbeck's birthday on the 12th,their daughter Stella's birthday on the 11th(Ritter succumbed to a sudden heart ailment on Stella's fourth birthday in 2003) and Ritter's and Yasbeck's wedding anniversary on the 18th(they were married one week after Stella's birth). Many remember Ritter's portrayal of Jack Tripper on TC and its not-too-popular spinoff TAC(both ABC alumni). Many also remember Sagal's portrayal of the gorgeous but lazy housewife Peggy Bundy on MWC,Fox's inaugural series that ran from 1987 to 1997. Ritter died just after this sitcom's second season began production at the Burbank,California hospital he was born in in 1948. That hospital stands across from the studio where 8SRFDMTD was taped. After Ritter's death, writers had Paul dropping dead of a heart attack while grocery shopping. Many viewers believed that the show wasn't too great without Ritter. That's probably why the show got the Nielsen axe after 2004-05. Throughout the series, several respective castmates of Ritter's and Sagal's guest starred such as Ed O'Neill and the late Don Knotts. I dedicate this item to the memory of Ritter.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show, Great Season and nice price..........2007-06-11

I am so happy that 8 simple Rules is finally being released to DVD on 8/07/07 and season 1 is defintely one of my favorites out of all 3 hillarious seasons. I loved John Ritter in "Three's Company" and I think his roll in "8 Simple Rules is just as funny and a must own set. I was quite shocked at the low $17.99 price for this set and I would definitely pre-order it while the price is still good with all of the online market place sales that are going on right now temporarily.

Paul (John Ritter) died off of the show as well as in real life in the beggining of season 2 and I find some of the episodes very sad because I knew that he would no longer be in the following seasons. There was a special two part show entitled "Goodbye in season 2 for the loss of John Ritter. After that, there was a few following episodes that dealt with the family coping with their loss and the stress of the children losing there father. I thought that the show would never be the same after that but it quickly picked back up pace, in which the show survived until after the third season and then came to an end. I did miss John Ritter after he was no longer part of the cast but the show continued with great hillarious episodes and I think that the other seasons did remarkably well.

Buy and enjoy season 1 because John Ritter is on all of these shows and is so fun to watch. His memory through his comedic work is still with us and is here to be watched and enjoyed for all time. Here is a complete list of all 28 episodes that will be included with this set, including the rare pilot that started it all!

Amazon.com essential video

In adapting his own novel The Cider House Rules for the screen, John Irving sacrificed at least some of the depth and detail that made his humanitarian themes resonate, while the film--directed with Scandinavian sobriety by Lasse Hallström--is often vague about the complex issues (abortion, incest, responsibility) that lie at its core. Allowing for this ambiguity (which is arguably intentional), the film retains much of what made Irving's novel so admired, and like Hallström's earlier feature What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, it's blessed with a generous, forgiving spirit toward the mistakes, foibles, and desires of its many engaging characters.

Central to the story (set during World War II) is Homer (Tobey Maguire), a young man raised in a Maine orphanage, where the ether-sniffing Dr. Larch (Michael Caine) rules with benevolent grace while performing safe but illegal abortions. To expand his horizons, Homer follows a young couple (Charlize Theron, Paul Rudd) to do fieldwork on an apple farm, where his innocent eyes are opened to the good and evil of the world--and to the realization that not all rules are steadfast in all situations. By the time Homer returns to the orphanage, The Cider House Rules--which features one of Caine's finest performances--is memorable more for its many charming and insightful moments than for any lasting dramatic impact. Is Homer fated to come full circle in his kindhearted journey? It's left to the viewer to decide. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Honored with two Academy Awards(R) -- Best Supporting Actor, Michael Caine, and Best Adapted Screenplay, John Irving -- THE CIDER HOUSE RULES tells a compelling and heartwarming story about how far a young man must travel to find the place where he truly belongs! Homer Wells (Tobey Macguire -- PLEASANTVILLE, THE ICE STORM, WONDER BOYS) has lived nearly his entire life within the walls of St. Cloud's Orphanage in rural Maine. Though groomed by its proprietor, Dr. Larch (Caine), to be his successor, Homer nonetheless feels the need to strike out on his own and experience the world outside. Then, while working at an apple orchard, Homer falls for the beautiful Candy (Charlize Theron -- REINDEER GAMES, THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE) and learns some powerfully indelible lessons about life, love, and home! Based on John Irving's best-selling American classic and featuring a sensational all-star cast including Delroy Lindo and newcomer Erykah Badu, this entertaining motion picture earned raves from critics and moviegoers everywhere!

5 out of 5 stars The craft of story and character.......2007-05-23

After multiple viewings, I still adore the richness and humanity of this modest little story. The subject matter, the setting, the era, the details, the characters, they're all exquisitely rendered. Toby Maguire offers a supremely generous lead. He is a canvas, basically, upon which the other actors draw their characters. Michael Caine is particularly stunning, but the whole cast is in capital form. Kids have never looked better or more believable on film, ever. Lasse Hallestrom gets my vote as the reigning saint of intelligent film-making. Everything he does is ambitious and edifying and humanscale, and altogether marvelously uncommercial. He is everything that Hollywood should aspire to be, but does not.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect .......2007-05-17

This is a great movie. It was in perfect condition. Never used when we got it and it was a reasonable price. :)

5 out of 5 stars "Princes of Maine - Kings of New England".......2007-04-11

If you read John Irving's books, you'll encounter quotes like these from time to time - all humorous, serious and significant to the story. Irving 's orphan heroes are made to feel that despite being 'unwanted' by society, they were given the most regal title by Dr. Larch so they know they are loved and important. Dr. Larch knows about people and their flaws, and life and it's inevitable tragedies and miracles. You have the same chance of being brought up in riches as you do being raised in an orphanage. Circumstances create all kinds of situations where your life (or death) could change with one mistake or 'choice'.
Irving himself grew up a princely comfortable life in New England, and many of his stories take place in his home state (New Hampshire) and surrounding Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts. He often depicts likeable, quirky characters brought up in 'provincial' New England. That being said, I can attest that Irving is no snob. He's a brilliant writer and his books are among my favs! A Prayer For Owen Meany is a treasure! ~ Enjoy this book and 'spot on' screenplay/film! Jayne Tyau

4 out of 5 stars Cider House Rules.......2007-04-10

I saw this movie several years ago and didn't appreciate the deeper meanings the director was trying to bring out. It was recently recommended to me by an attorney when we were discussing how people go forward after a judgement is made.

This is film that will make you think. I recommend giving it your full attention to appreciate it's subtleties.

1 out of 5 stars The search for honest, genuine, responsibility has failed.......2007-04-10

The orphanage is neat, and is portrayed in a nice, familyish way. The care that is shown there is touching. Beyond that, I search for someone that stands out as true, genuine, and responsible, and I don't find one. The meaninglessness of life without God is starkly portrayed.

A not-quite dazzling array of cinematic tricks (split screens, freeze-frames, running the film backwards, rapid editing, etc.) are used to depict college students floundering in the pursuit of love and meaning. Drugs, blow jobs, pornography, booze, rape, masturbation, '80s pop tunes, beatings, suicide, attempted suicide, faked suicide, loss of bladder control, and trite pseudo-philosophy are on display as pretty young actors with squeaky-clean images (like James Van Der Beek and Jessica Biel) attempt to dirty themselves up. The Rules of Attraction comes to life for about five minutes when an actor named Russell Sams appears for an outrageous restaurant scene, then slumps back into terminal disaffection when he departs. Also featuring Shannyn Sossamon, Faye Dunaway, Swoozie Kurtz, Ian Somerhalder, Kate Bosworth, Eric Stolz, Fred Savage, and many strikingly good-looking young people. The filmmakers are attempting to depict the vacuousness of today's youth but only succeed in portraying the void in their own hearts. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-06-15

Went into this one not expecting much, and was surprised. Very good.

1 out of 5 stars Truly horrible.......2007-05-26

This is one of the nastiest things I've sat through for a long time. I kept waiting for some hint of wit or wisdom to emerge but it simply cloaks its vacuousness with some pretentious flashback trickery. Every characterin it is repellent and despaired, sex-obsessed and self-absorbed; the violence and abuse is graphic and it has nothing to say about human nature beyond what we know happens to people who have lost touch with all decent values. I'm told that it is satirical but it's too witless to be trenchant or mordant in its observations and as for comedy - I'm afraid I could not laugh at its glorification of decadence. People who live like this live neither long nor happily but this film attempts more to legitimise and normalise their casual misery than to satirise it. Real "vomit of despair" - avoid it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, dark, and very funny.......2007-05-21

Bret Easton Ellis is an awesome writer. I think his book "American Psycho" captures a certain essence of modern America that eludes most authors. It's difficult to say that about a book whose main character spends most of his time killing people in the most nauseating ways possible while working days as a Wall Street insider. Based on that plot summary alone, I would say you'd have to be insane to think "American Psycho" is a modern classic. It is, though. It's how Ellis captures the vacuousness of the elites, the absolute absence of any form of morality, which makes the book shine. Too, he captures the mindlessness of rampant consumerism perfectly. He takes it over the top, I think, but he does so only to emphasize the emptiness of his characters. Not surprisingly, his other novels look at the same ideas from different perspectives. "Less Than Zero" cast a scathing eye on the immoral goings on amongst wealthy 1980s youth in Los Angeles. Then there's "Rules of Attraction," a book, eventually made into a major motion picture in 2002, which does the same thing for wealthy college students. I think I detect a pattern unfolding here!

"The Rules of Attraction" exposes the antics unfolding at Camden College, one of those snooty, Ivy League type schools attended by the offspring of America's rich and famous. Let's meet the cast of characters, shall we? We've got Sean Bateman (James Van Der Beek), a drug dealer in hot water with his supplier Rupert Guest (Clifton Collins, Jr.). Lauren Hynde (the delightful Shannyn Sossamon) is a pretty young girl saving herself for her boyfriend Victor (Kip Pardue), who in turn is currently making the party rounds in Europe. Lauren's roommate Lara (Jessica Biel) likes to mix it up with the entire male population of Camden College. Paul Denton (Ian Somerhalder) is a chap that likes to swing both ways. He used to date Lauren before coming out of the closet, so to speak, and now has eyes for Sean Bateman, who he thinks swings both ways as well. I think that pretty much covers the main characters. We've got a host of minor actors in the unfolding story arcs--people like Candice (Clare Kramer), Kelly (Kate Bosworth), and Marc (Fred Savage)--to keep things popping. We also see Faye Dunaway and Swoosie Kurtz as parents in a particularly amusing sequence.

Whew! Just trying to keep track of the characters takes up most of your first viewing experience. You'll need to watch the film again to get the most out of it, however, because director Roger Avary employs a most unusual narrative technique to tell these characters' stories. When we first enter the movie, Sean's prowling about the infamous "End of the World" party held every year on campus. We hear him talking about himself and his actions in voiceover, a tactic used for other characters as well, before the weirdness begins. Scenes start rewinding at an incredible pace, zipping back through what we've already seen in order to take us to another character's sad tale of woe. We see Sean's problems with Rupert, Lauren's romantic difficulties, and lots of out of control partying. We learn that Sean receives love notes in his post office box that he thinks Lauren sent. The two meet but eventually drift apart before anything serious occurs. That's mainly the crux of the film right there: interesting things start to happen but don't due to inaction, misunderstandings, and a lack of communication. It doesn't help that the characters labor under vacuousness so total as to preclude meaningful relationships with anyone other than themselves.

I got a huge kick out of this movie. Then again, I also got a huge kick out of the film versions of "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho". Others disagree, obviously, but I think Ellis's novels translate well to the screen. "Rules of Attraction" works under the capable guidance of Roger Avery. I think a lot of people complain about this movie, and by extension the other film versions of Ellis's books, because they don't understand the subject matter. You can complain about the film's lack of substance (not substance abuse, though, because there's plenty of that to go around), but that's the point. Ellis writes books that expose the various forms of decadence plaguing our society, and writes them in order to show the consequences on its practitioners. If you can't grasp that concept, you won't like this film. Then again, maybe you will if you like your humor as black as pitch. Let me cite two wickedly funny sequences in the movie as proof. One, the scene in which Sean attempts to take his own life had me howling with laughter. I watched it again and again, and it never lost its ability to amuse. Two, Victor's sojourn through Europe is a sight and sound experience one should not miss. Hilarious. If you still can't groove to the flick, two words: Jessica Biel.

You'll find great picture and audio quality on this DVD. Supplements include an intriguing 26 minute "Anatomy of a Scene" that explains how Avary and company pulled off an especially tricky piece of camera work involving Sossamon and Van Der Beek. We also receive trailers and television spots for the film, promotional material, and a commercial for the book. We also get SIX commentary tracks. One of them is a bonus commentary with comedian Carrot Top (?). The rest rely on the various actors and a few crewmembers. SIX COMMENTARY TRACKS! What were they thinking? If you listen to all of them, and I did, you'll spend days working your way through this disc's special features. I like the movie, I'm giving it five stars, and even I don't think I needed to know this much information about the film. What's surprising is that director Roger Avary isn't on a single one of these tracks! Weird. Anyway, enjoy the film. It's a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book Adaption, Not so Great Film.......2007-03-14

Despite many large and small changes to the characters and storyline (what little there is) of Bret Easton Ellis' book, "The Rules of Attraction" manages to stay completely faithful to the novel's spirit and tone. In this, it a far more successful adapation of Ellis' work than any film thus far. Roger Avary has created an incoherent, chaotic, frenzied work, full of unlikable, selfish characters. Anyone that's read Ellis' book knows that's exactly what it is. However, what works on page often does not work on film, and this film is a clear example of that. Even though the entire cast is great, and James Van Der Beek has never been better on the big screen, the film simply does not really click. I don't know if Avary could have made the film differently and still stayed faithful to the book, but the end result is a great book adaption and a not so great film.

My advice? If you've read and liked the book, you'll like the movie despite its big, glaring faults. If you haven't read or didn't like the book, don't see the movie.

The unflinching realism and searing performances of Monster's Ball are stunning in all the connotations of the word. Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and Leticia (Halle Berry) inhabit stark, queasy realities of the contemporary South, he as a death row corrections officer and she as the soon-to-be widow of an inmate (Sean Combs) whose execution Hank helps conduct. In the aftermath of the execution, both lose their children to tragic deaths and they form an unlikely bond. In the hands of lesser participants, the fateful plot might strain credibility and seem tailored to allow for liberal sermonizing about the obvious wrongs of our legal justice system, but director Marc Forster and cinematographer Roberto Schaefer balance the contentious nature of the film's issues--the death penalty, racism both overt and subtle, interracial couples--with a flawless attention to character and visual detail that completely convinces. The moral ambiguity of both central characters is given full voice as our sympathy is drawn out reluctantly at first but all the more resolutely in the end. Thornton draws from seemingly limitless resources to deliver yet another outstanding performance, but it is Halle Berry who is a revelation as she sustains throughout the complex tenor of brutality witnessed and raw courage defined. --Fionn Meade

4 out of 5 stars Halle Berry at her best!.......2007-06-26

I saw "Monster's Ball" in the movie theatre. I felt then that it was a good movie, but the key reason I even went to see it in theatres is because Halle Berry, one of my all-time favorite actresses, was starring in it. I have seen most of Halle's movies, and I can attest to the fact that this is, acting-wise, her best film. Halle is an outstanding actress, but I have never really seen her give her all, until now. Halle really went all out for this movie, and she deserved the Oscar. Although I don't think it's fair that so many African-American actresses before Halle have done phenomenal jobs in movies and never received an Oscar, but Halle shined in this film and that Oscar had her name on it as far as I'm concerned. The ranting and raving about Halle had to be foremost, however, the entire cast did a great job. Billy Bob Thornton, Heath Ledger, Mos Def, and Diddy all showed their acting abilities, and I was impressed.

This was not an easy film to watch. It didn't have a Hollywood ending or cheesy subject matter. The film shows us three generations of corrections officers, a grandfather, a father, and a son. The father and grandfather both have prejudiced mindsets, however the son doesn't. We learn that the father (Hank) doesn't love his son, and his son does an unlikely thing to show how upset he is about that, commits suicide in front of his father.

We meet Leticia and her son Tyrell. Leticia's husband is given the death penalty, and she's naturally on-edge. She attempts to relax her nerves by smoking, drinking and lashing out at her obese progeny. As the movie progresses, Tyrell is tragically killed in a hit and run. From what the movie implies, all Leticia had was her son. She was never seen with parents or friends. After her husband and son die, she's all alone in life, until she meets Hank. Hank sees Leticia and her dying son on the side of the road and decide to stop and offer aid to them. He rushes them to the hospital, and from there, the two of them build a friendship, and then a relationship.

Hank and Leticia both feel vulnerable because of the unfortunate occurrences they both lived. Their relationship, from the outside looking in, resembles two people who are yearning for a happiness they'd seemingly never come across and hoped to find in one another.

The irony of Hank and Leticia's relationship is that Hank was one of the correction's officers who helped kill Leticia's husband, but she is oblivious to this.

This motion picture will totally lure you into it's painful plot. Other reviews that I've read on this movie said that it was boring, and perhaps to some, it is; but if you give this movie your undivided attention from start to finish, there is hardly a boring moment in my opinion.

I DO NOT recommend this picture for the faint of heart. It includes some of the most graphic scenes cinema has ever seen, and some of them are not easy to stomach. Also, that oh so popular sex scene...very candid and graphic. However, if you can handle it, by all means take a look at this heart-wrenching film.

2 out of 5 stars Oh, come now...........2007-06-13

This is one of the most over-rated movies I've ever seen. It is too contrived in plot and too manipulative, particularly with respect to the sex scene between Thornton and Berry. Consider the following:

Billy Bob Thornton plays a racist prison guard who takes a sort of military pride in the structured electrocution of condemned prisoners. His son, a non-racist guard under him, is not up to the same standard. A condemned prisoner, the husband of the woman played by Halle Berry, is put to death.

Through a convoluted set of circimstances, Thornton takes up with Ms.Berry, after Thornton's son commits suicide and Berry's overweight son is killed in a car accident. Neither knows of their connection to the electrocuted prisoner until the end of the movie. The device used to reveal the connection should be obvious to any viewer Are you following this?

For some reason (perhaps the fact that Halle Berry is drop dead gorgeous) Thornton gives up his racism and has an extremely steamy sex scene with the beauteous widow. Well, that's understandable, but the fact that she is magnificent to look upon is grossly manipulative. Would Thornton have been so solicitous of her if she had been an average looking African American woman? I doubt it. Beauty trumps racism.

Several movies have been made, through the years, about a racist white becoming liberalized by association with an African American, and in virtually every case the device for attaining this has been so contrived as to make a viewer groan. In one case a blind white girl falls in love with a very nice black man. In another case, a racist white is chained to a black man and they have to cooperate to escape pursuers. In yet another, a white girl brings a black man home to meet her upper class parents--but the black man is a handsome Ivy League surgeon. Sidney Poitier, a fine actor, was in all of these.

In all of these, including Monster's Ball, the devices are just too heavy handed and obvious. The acting in Monster's Ball is OK, but the story is the problem. For example, I never believed for a second that the Halle Berry character would have said, "Make me feel good" and seduced Thornton. Why? I don't object to sexy scenes, per se. I object when sex scenes are included to titilate the viewer, and that was exactly the case in Monster's Ball.

1 out of 5 stars best part of the movie was Halle Berry.......2007-03-09

This movie was boring, it was like one of those sundance films, interesting enough to watch once, then put it away forever. The best part of the movie was Halle Berry's sex scene's they were brief, and tastfully done, however if it wasn't for her I never would have watched it. If I ever watch it again, it will be to get my Halle Berry fix......Keith

4 out of 5 stars You Get What You Need.......2006-11-30

This is a different sort of movie; a sort of mixture of "Affliction", "The Green Mile" and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". The characters are difficult to warm up to which may have been the writer and director's point. We get plenty of love stories that lead us down the primerose path. What about a love story about two people who never should have been associated with each other. Two people whose stars not only didn't cross, they were magnetically repelled from ever even nearing each other. This is what "Monster's Ball" is to me. In that sense, it is an interesting movie.

The characters are rather extreme but, then, that's in keeping with the extreme nature of the message. Still, it's hard not to be put off a bit because of how disfuctional the main characters are. By the mid-point of the movie, we know who we DON'T like and the rest of the movie tries to salvage two out of those three. This change of direction would seem impossible except for the introduction of exteme crises that alter the lives of the people we are reluctant to care about. We reach the end of the movie shaking our heads but relizing that, in some perverse way, there's someone for everyone. I'm reminded of the Rolling Stones's song with the lyrics "You can't always get what you want but if you try sometime, you just might find, you get what you need." Not inspiring but a reminder that even scoundrels need someone to hold onto from time to time. I found that the premise worked well enough for me.

Director William Friedkin knows a thing or two about staging harrowing action sequences, and if you don't believe that, you've never seen The French Connection or To Live and Die in L.A. He comes through niftily in this film as well, with an opening Vietnam battle sequence that sets the stage for the rest of the story, and then with the central moment in the film: a rescue mission involving Marines extricating the American ambassador from an embassy surrounded by hostile protesters in Yemen. Unfortunately, Friedkin can't do much about the implausible plot that follows, in which the Marine commander, played by the always-terrific Samuel L. Jackson, is accused of slaughtering innocent civilians (who actually were shooting at him and his men). He must rely on an old Marine buddy--a lawyer played by Tommy Lee Jones--to get him through the jury-rigged court martial. But the central premise--that an evil presidential aide would perjure himself and destroy evidence simply to maintain good relations with U.S. allies in the Middle East, rather than defending a highly decorated Marine colonel who risked his life--is inevitably hard to swallow. And the ending is even flimsier. --Marshall Fine

3 out of 5 stars Leaves the wrong message.......2007-07-01

I don't understand why the filmmakers were trying to convince everyone that Samuel L. Jackson's character couldn't have violated the rules of engagement. The opening scene sets his attitude pretty well when he blatantly kills a Viet Cong prisoner to encourage the enemy commander to call off his unit which is killing everyone in Tommy Lee Jones's platoon. While the plot is different, the atmosphere of old, beat-down, used-up has-beens reminds me of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. The problem lies in the ending.

I think it could have been a good movie, but it lacked a key ingredient. I lost that suspension of disbelief that makes it necessary to enjoy the movie. I will illustrate this point next, but beware...

SPOILER AHEAD...

When the old Viet Cong commander who stopped the attack on Tommy Lee Jones's platoon shows up in the court room to testify, I was stricken with how unlikely that would be. When he testified that Samuel L. Jackson murdered his radio operator to force him to call off the attack, I figured it was a done deal. Regardless of all the emotion brought forth by Tommy Lee Jones's defense, which sounded good, but didn't change the facts, the whole time I'm watching this I'm thinking "guilty, guilty, guilty." I was sure they weren't going to convict the main character, I was just wondering how he was going to get out of it. The ultimate defense was Tommy Lee Jones asking the Viet Cong commander if he would have done the same if that had been his friend's platoon being killed. Of course, the guy says "yes." So the viewer is supposed to believe that makes it ok? Since when did the American military hold the values of the Viet Cong up to such high admiration that they condoned flat-out murder, point-blank, in the head, to an unarmed prisoner? This is just too unbelievable.

2 out of 5 stars A Lot of Nothing.......2007-01-12

This movie goes from Dumb, to Dumber, and finishes with Dumbest.

3 out of 5 stars Important questions, disappointing answers.......2006-07-23

The charisma of Tommy Lee Jones & Samuel L. Jackson & the gripping theme of this film make it quite watchable. Hard not to be taken in. I rented it; I'm not sorry. Would I buy it? No.

In the last analysis, it's a cynical and manipulative film, not least because the final captions suggest it is a true story -- and I see from some basic internet research that it is not.

Also, it mericilessly milks a number of stereotypes: some of them concern the Yemeni characters; others Vietnam; the relationship between the black and white characters; the main characters' relationships with their families (the lawyer with his overshadowing father, estranged wife, and pacifist son; the colonel Childers with the Marine Corps, the flag, and his non-existent family). Finally, this is a gripping film that does not do justice to its underlying themes, which include a racial aspect that goes entirely unexplored.

Today -- July 22, 2006 -- there are desperate issues in the world that could have been illuminated by a film like this one. They are not, which may explain why Secretary of the Navy James Webb, who reportedly originally worked on the concept, ultimately withdrew. These are questions -- when does war become murder? what counts as torture? what as innocence? how complicit must civilian populations be before they become targets themselves? -- that are too important to be left to films as un-self-conscious as this one.

2 out of 5 stars Subtexts.......2006-07-02

On the surface this film is a pretty good courtroom drama.

Underneath, however, the director seems to have a couple of other themes going. One thing that stood out to me is that the film is full of people who are "caught between a rock and a hard place". Right from the start, where Childers has to choose between following the rules of war or saving his best friend. He has a similar choice on the wall in Yemin - fire into the crowd or let the attack on his people continue. I think he knew at that moment that his career was in the crapper. Jones' character said as much during the trial: "Whatever happens here, this man will never command marines again". The "bad guy" national security advisor was in a bind: do what is best for America's interests or back up the colonel? The ambassador had to make a hard choice: lie on the stand or lose his job, his status, his reputation? Even his wife had to decide whether to tell the truth or stand behind her husband's story. Biggs, the prosecutor, got caught up in it - he started out with the intent to prosecute what he was convinced was a legitimate case, then got tossed a 'hot potato' by the NSA right in open court. Childers' second-in-command, Captain Lee, had to decide whether to tell the truth or back his colonel. And so on.

The court-martial itself seems to pit logic against emotion (shades of Star Trek!). The differences are clearest in the closing arguements - Biggs is the Joe Friday "just the facts" type; he presents the panel with A. this happened, then B this happened, and so on. Hayes' whole arguement is based on emotion - and then, finally, the jury is left with yet another hard decision.

I found the movie very interesting in terms of what is going on with the characters - a lot of films are like this, if you look a little deeper, there's more there than the surface story.

Description

Jean Renoir's 1939 classic is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, and Criterion is very proud to present the film in a special two-disc edition. Cloaked in a comedy of manners, this scathing critique of corrupt French society is about a weekend hunting party at which amorous escapades abound among the aristocratic guests-which are also mirrored by the activities of the servants downstairs. The refusal of one of the guests to play by society's rules sets off a chain of events that ends in tragedy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rules of the Game.......2007-06-21

Director Renoir's scathing critique of French social conventions and hypocrisy caused quite a stir on release, and it's not hard to see why. A bit too clever and close to home for its time, the film's sublime satire has a cutting edge, as both masters and servants fixate on trivialities and behave foolishly, while all around them, Rome burns- or is it Paris? (Only a year after the film's release, the Nazis would occupy France). This is one game still worth playing.

5 out of 5 stars quick note on the subtitles.......2007-05-06

The folks at "Criterion Collection" sure do go out of their way to tout their products -- such as this release of Renoir's immortal "Rules of the Game" -- as being the alpha and omega of DVD releases.

This two-disc set sure has a lot of extras bundled in, but I'm disappointed in one major category: although you can get the English subtitles off the screen, you cannot have it display French subtitles, in case you're passable at French or would like to clarify or improve something.

There is quite the literate commentary track in English, however, although the movie has not been dubbed into English on any audio track. Be aware that the commentary is not "live:" it's someone reading an academic essay. (Peter Bogdanovich reading an appreciation by Alexander Sesonske.)

5 out of 5 stars Who says the French are boring?.......2007-04-22

Asinine comments such as "The French are boring and do not know how to entertain us" (this from a Finn, of all people) or the predictable "It's the French, what can I say?" perfectly illustrate this false perception of French films being "boring" and "self-absorbed". French films like this one and countless others have not only been praised by some of the best directors in the world - from Scorcese to Kurosawa, - but hugely influential as well. Broadway-adapted French classics such as "The Fanthom Of The Opera", "Beauty And The Beast", "Les Miserables" and "Notre Dame De Paris" have entertained millions (and made many wealthy) to this day. So who says the French - who by the way invented Cinema - are boring?

5 out of 5 stars The Most Sympathetic of Social Satires. .......2007-01-25

Regarded by many as one of the greatest movies ever made, Jean Renoir's "The Rules of the Game" had a poor reception in Paris in 1939. Audiences were enraged. French conservatives were offended. This social satire about the games of love as played by upper class acquaintances and their domestic servants who assemble at the country home of the Marquis de la Chesnaye for a weekend of hunting nearly moved people to riot. Watching "The Rules of the Game" now, it's impossible to see it as audiences did then. The characters are charming relics of an extinct society. And the film we see isn't what audiences saw in 1939. The original edit was 94 minutes long, then cut to 81 minutes in a futile attempt to appease the public. The film was reconstructed in 1959 from all available footage, resulting in the extended 106-minute version that we see today. Earlier versions were harsher, allowing for less character development and emotional depth. Quite simply, the wrong film was shown to the wrong audience in 1939. "The Rules of the Game" opened on the Champs-Elysees, where bourgeois audiences saw their values mocked on the big screen.

Inspired by 18th century comedies and Musset's "Les Caprices de Marianne", Jean Renoir went one better with the stock characters of husband, wife, mistress, lover, and interceding friend. He doubled them, creating matched opposing pairs in the upstairs/downstairs social circles. The Marquis Robert de la Chesnaye (Marcel Dalio) invites an assemblage of friends to his country home for a hunt and a party in honor of a new national hero, the aviator Andre Jurieu (Roland Toutain). Robert plans to dismiss his mistress Genevieve (Mila Parely) and pursue a more sincere relationship with his somewhat naïve Austrian wife Christine (Nora Gregor). But Christine is pursued by the handsome young Jurieu. Old family friend Octav (Jean Renoir) negotiates a fine line as friend and accomplice to all. Christine's maid Lisette (Paulette Dubost) watches with interest as she evades her earnest gamekeeper husband (Gaston Modot) in favor of a flirtatious poacher (Julien Carette).

Considering Jean Renoir's communist sympathies in the 1930s, it is easy to see "The Rules of the Game" as a critique of bourgeois materialism and propriety. But the film is not so limited. It's a broader commentary on the consequences of etiquette that every society imposes on its members by necessity. The consequences of not understanding the rules and of understanding them all too well. Whatever he may be criticizing, Jean Renoir's sympathies are clearly with his characters. These hauts bourgeois, with their alternating spectacles of slaughter, farce, and delicacy, are ultimately likable and sensitive. Renoir scholar Alexander Sesonske called "The Rules of the Game" "the most complex social criticism ever enacted on the screen." Perhaps it is simply the most sympathetic. And to that the film owes its enduring success. French with optional English subtitles.

The DVDs (Criterion Collection 2004): Disc 1 contains the film, a "Renoir Introduction" (6 1/2 min) in which the director talks about the film's reception and why it was considered controversial, an audio commentary, comparison of different edits, and some additional scene analysis. The white English subtitles are sometimes difficult to read and would have been better in yellow. The audio commentary is a good scene-by-scene analysis of the film written by Renoir scholar Alexander Sesonske and read by Peter Bogdanovich. It discusses the political atmosphere in the time between Munich and the War, themes, social context, characters, structure, social juxtapositions, class distinctions, etc. "Version Comparison" includes the film's final scenes as they appeared in the 81-minute edit of the film, which change the meaning of the final act. Professor of Film at Carleton University in Ottawa Chris Faulkner compares (13 min) the final scenes in the 106-minute version with the same scenes in the 81-minute version, which omitted many of Octav's scenes. "Scene Analysis" is by Renoir historian Chris Faulkner: "Public and Private" (5 1/2 min) analyzes the opening scenes and the final scene. "Corridor" (3 min) discusses depth of field in one scene.

Disc 2 includes television shows about Jean Renoir, the film's production history, and interviews. "Jean Renoir, Le Patron" (31 min) is from the French TV series "Cineastes de Notre Temps". In this 1967 interview, Renoir discusses the script, characters, and deep focus. Includes a conversation between Renoir and Marcel Dalio in which they talk about creating the character of the Marquis. In French with English subtitles, but the quality of the print is poor and burned out. "BBC Documentary" (1 hour) is the first part of a 2-part 1993 documentary which follows Renoir's life "From La Belle Epoche to World War II". Includes interviews with Jean Renoir, his son, and those who knew him. Talks about his childhood and youth as the son of painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, his career in filmmaking, influence during the 1930s, until his departure to Hollywood in 1940. "Production History" includes a video essay (8 min) narrated by Chris Faulkner that traces the film from its conception until its reconstruction in 1959, as well as an archived interview with Jean Gaborit and Jacques Durand, who did the 1959 reconstruction. "Interviews" are with people who took part in the film: Production designer Max Douy (9 min), 2003, French with subtitles. Actress Mila Parely (16 min), 1995, French with subtitles. And assistant cameraman Alain Renoir (19 min), 2003, in English. "Tributes" (text) are 13 brief essays by writers, directors, and critics paying tribute to "The Rules of the Game".

5 out of 5 stars Gallic Goings-on Upstairs and Downstairs During an Eventful Weekend at a Chateau.......2006-09-13

I didn't know what to expect given the vaunted reputation of Jean Renoir's acknowledged 1939 masterpiece, but what surprises me most is its frenetic energy, really akin to a Marx Brothers farce in depicting the goings-on of the French bourgeoisie during the tenuous period just before WWII. The 2004 Criterion Collection DVD contains a masterfully restored print of this social dramedy focusing on a diverse group of characters on a palatial country estate during a weekend hunt.

The event is spurred by André Jurieu, an adventurous aviator who just crossed the Atlantic to a hero's welcome only to find his lover Christine has not greeted him. Petulant about his rejection, he is invited by his best friend, the boorish, seemingly happy-go-lucky Octave, to the hunt since it is at La Colinere, the chateau of Christine and her husband, the wealthy Marquis Robert de la Chesnaye. Also invited is Robert's mistress Genevieve, and romantic complications inevitably ensue. All the while, the servants carry on with their own shenanigans as Christine's soubrette maid Lisette, married to the Germanic estate gamekeeper Schumacher, dallies with Marceau, a new domestic hired by Robert after getting caught poaching rabbits on the grounds.

Even though it looks like it will be a serious character study from the outset, there are actually quite a few moments that border on slapstick. But there is an increasing gravitas to the proceedings sparked by the actual game hunt where we see rabbits and pheasants slaughtered mercilessly by the guests. Renoir obviously wants to show us the unconcerned attitudes of the rich encapsulated in one defining scene, and it works. From that point, the various deceptions start to unravel until André makes a serious-minded proposition to Christine that amounts to breaking the rules of their elitist existence. It isn't too surprising that tragedy subsequently occurs as such violations are intolerable among the upper crust.

The cinematography by Jean-Paul Alphen, Jean Bachelet, Jacques Lemare and Alain Renoir is most impressive as it alternates fluidly between realistic documentary-style shots with dramatic deep-focus tableaux in the house that capture the fulsome activity. The acting is first-rate with stand-out work from Roland Toutain as André, Marcel Dalio as Robert, a comical Julien Carette as Marceau and Renoir himself as Octave. Although I don't think it's completely necessary, some knowledge of European history during this period is helpful in understanding some of the film's nuances such as making Christine an Austrian or having one of the servants mouth such anti-Semitic remarks as everyday conversation.

Criterion's two-disc set is chockfull of extras beginning with Renoir's own introduction of the film taped in 1966. There is audio commentary narrated by Peter Bogdanovich from notes supplied by film scholar Alexander Sesonske, and scene-specific commentary from Renoir specialist Christopher Faulkner. There are three extended video excerpts included on the second disc - the first from 1966 with Renoir's participation, the second from an extensive 1993 BBC documentary, and the third a video essay on not only the original production but the reconstruction that took place when original footage became lost during the war. This all seems luxuriant, but this classic film does live up to its reputation.

dvd driver education: good learning tool, current information, virtual driving puts things into perspective

2 out of 5 stars Video games are more useful for parallel parking.......2006-07-03

I bought this DVD thinking that, among other things, it would help me with parallel parking for the purposes of the driver's test. The distributor's site claimed that the DVD explained parallel parking in "a few simple steps," and even mentioned that there was a 3D model that could be viewed from multiple angles. I am notorious for not having the best spatial judgment, and bought the disc assuming that it would offer some sort of fool-proof advice that I hadn't stumbled across so far.

These hopes, however, were quickly dashed when I actually watched the clip on parallel parking; in fact, my first reaction was something along the lines of "that's all?" The instructions expect the driver to be able to line up with the car in front of the parking space-- perfectly good advice, as long as there's a car to line up with. At my own local DMV office, there's literally nothing in front of the parallel parking space with which to line up, so that advice is rather futile-- and I would *almost* be willing to excuse this, were it not for the fact that the accompanying footage shows a DMV office with the very same arrangement.

Similarly, the distributor claimed that there was a "simple explanation" for which way to turn the wheel when parking on a hill. Simple, that is, if you can easily remember seemingly random directions by rote without getting them all mixed up; as is the case with a number of other explanations on this DVD, I would have found some elaboration on *why* the rules should be followed far more memorable than an unconnected bunch of easily confused rote facts.

But there are 3D models that might be helpful, right? Yes, if you're one of those sorts of people with reasonably good spatial skills that can work things out from an outside-the-car perspective. I would have much preferred to have at least one perspective showing the view from *within* the car, particularly during the parallel parking clip, so I could get just a vague idea of what a successful maneuver should look like from my own perspective.

I can't *completely* fault Jumby Bay for this release, however, because they did do something that seems to be quite a rarity on independent educational videos: namely, they actually considered the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students by offering a subtitle track. That alone is worthy of an extra star.

1 out of 5 stars lame driver ed video.......2006-03-08

I bought this DVD for my 16yo son and previewed it. It is SO lame that I hesitate to even give it to him. The kids are so scrubbed and clean-cut as to be nauseating even to me. the cuts to a state trooper are largely purposeless..he sounds unscripted, COPS video where it is shot from the front seat and he never looks at the camera (he is driving while talking!) and the material he delivers has NO relationship to what they just interrupted. The questions are so general as to be obvious without any attention to the video. NOT a good effort. Save your money. "Death on the Highway" 30 years ago got your attention, this doesn't.

4 out of 5 stars Rules of the roads.......2004-08-12

"Rules of the road" has two major blind spots and few minor ones. I, personally, do not like how parallel parking (#3 Road test) was presented. It does not look comprehensive. The authors even did not mention obvious rules usually taught about parallel parking. Well, parallel parking between two pairs of construction barriers obviously looks cute but it may not reflect real situation at the exam and especially at the street. Episode about drug/alcohol driving made ridiculously schematic. There is no definition of BAC, no particular mentioning of how different alcohol beverages may affect it. There is also no mentioning of how to avoid DWI or DWI-drug. Com'n guys! It is simple and this is very important! They even did not say anything of how regular prescribed medicine can affect driving especially in combination with alcohol. Furthermore, driving with cell phone in some areas is already illegal. The authors of the movie said opposite: it is dangerous but if you want it, it is all right, go ahead! As minor inaccuracy of this movie I would consider that they never showed steering weal in the car except a small episode in "basics" as well as there was no mentioning of the U-turn. Watching this movie, it is impossible to figure out there are some of the machine tools are located. I've got no idea of the location of head lights (high and low bins) hazardous lights. However, regardless of what I said, you may want to buy due to the only particular reason. I do not see any reasonable commercially available substitute for it.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Read The Manuel Instead.......2003-08-06

Cheesey video, bad interface, offers little instruction, tests are too easy to be useful. Save the money and go take a driving lesson from a licensed instructor instead. We purchased this to help with parallel parking. The topic is mentioned on the video but there is virtually no instruction. And so it goes with most of the other topics.....

This DVD was hilarious... funniest thing Ive watched in a long time!! Definate 5/5

5 out of 5 stars The Dice Is The Best.......2007-01-04

"Diceman" was so ahead of his time. It's really sad the liberal media sort of black listed him. Let's face the facts, it was all based on his racial jokes, gay jokes, etc....Of course if he was female, mexican, or black doing the very same thing, the media would have accepted him with open arms. He's just the best at what he does, and they hate him for it. The great part is, working America loves him. This is the reason he still makes six figures a night. Roll on "Dice". You are the man.

5 out of 5 stars Great laughs for a long time fan........2005-10-14

I'm a long-time Dice fan and especially like his earlier stuff. This show is pretty early in his career and I busted up at material that was new to me. I've seen him in concert 3 times, 2 big venues and once in Vegas. This dvd reminded me of the Vegas show, small venue w/ comedy room atmosphere. Get this dvd you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great standup routine, Odd intro, and Stupid concert ending.......2005-10-12

When the DVD started off I thought I had the wrong product. The beginning isn't standup comedy, but a few clips and skits in a movie like format. The skits were actually pretty funny. Especially when the store clerk curses at Dice using mixed phrases. "You @ss-head! You mother b*tch!"

When Dice stated doing his routine, I knew it I had the right DVD. His standup was hilarious. He makes fun of a lot of people, he can definitely be offensive, but that's his act. He tells jokes at people's expense, but they are jokes. (Japanese people could be very offended, he goes off on a tangent for a while)

The end of the DVD has like 20 minutes of Dice actually singing with a band. He obviously idolizes Elvis, but C'mon! That really shouldn't have been included. If it didn't have the rock and roll part at the end, this would have been perfect.

I give it five stars anyway because his routine was that funny.

I suggest buying online because you'll never find this in stores anymore.

    1 out of 5 stars Never showed.......2005-09-07

I placed my order on the 7th and got multiple notices that my product has shipped yet. Finally I clicked ship in multiple orders overnight. Everything showed up 20 days late accept this one. Which never showed up at all. Go Amazon! Anyone who reads this go to blockbusters site for movies at least when you pay for overnight the show up the next day like they should!!!!

this book written by Sam's Brother is a in depth look to Sam, something the cameras didn't see. if you enjoyed his comedy or if you want to get into his comedy, this is a book for all! some cool photos too.
    I LOVE YA SAM

2 out of 5 stars Ok but Not Great.......2006-12-31

I saw him live in 1987 when he was hot and hoped this would be a great reminder of his hilarious sense of humor and delivery but it was far too short (only 45 minutes) and only had a couple of good routines. My hopes were higher than what this delivered! The bonus material was taken from Vegas when he was near the end and it really was not very funny. I would recommend looking at another DVD of his rather than purhcase this one.

5 out of 5 stars BREAKING THE RULES WITH SAM.......2006-07-13

only Sam Kinison could imagine so much to rant about when it comes to everyday life...but in reality...he loved life!
    May God Bless his soul!!!

What happened at the Branch Davidian compound in Mt. Carmel, Texas, in 1993? Why did 4 federal agents and 86 civilians lose their lives? The powerful documentary Waco: The Rules of Engagement asks these and many other difficult questions, and the answers are deeply disturbing, even for the most cynical. Using interviews, news footage, testimony before Congress, and infrared photographic analysis, the film relentlessly chips away at the government's story that David Koresh and his followers were a dangerous cult involved in strange sex and drug practices who were preparing to slaughter their neighbors and that they immolated themselves à la Jonestown, rather than give themselves up peacefully. Nearly every element of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms' and the FBI's cover-up is exposed as fraudulent and the viewer is left wondering when, if ever, justice will finally be served. Warning: There are a few minutes of extremely graphic footage of the burnt bodies of the Davidians; though this is sickening, it seems less so than the tragic mistakes made by law enforcement officials. --Rob Lightner

    Description

Shaking the foundation of democracy, the shocking revelations behind the tragic series of events outside Waco, Texas that killed four federal agents and 76 men, women and children of the Branch Davidian religious sect has finally been exposed. Winner of an Academy-Award® nomination in light of its incredible discoveries, Waco: The Rules of Engagement brings forth devastating evidence of federal law enforcement gone tragically wrong. It dares to suggest the ATF provoked war with a group whose apocalyptic religious beliefs and rumored manufacturing of illegal weapons made them easy targets for an inevitable abuse of its members' civil and human rights. Waco: The Rules of Engagement will change forever the way the world thinks and talks about the tragedy at Waco and, most importantly, it will renew our commitment to the basic precepts of tolerance and freedom upon which American society is built.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars No Bull.......2007-02-06

This documentary feeds you no bull. No hype. Simply the truth. While the "official" line is full of holes...this documentary gives us a clear picture of what happened at Waco... From the missing tapes, to the missing front door of the compound, this video reveals to you things that the ATF doesn't want you to know!!

    3 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking documentary.......2007-01-27

I'd seen this movie before, but wanted it on DVD. It's one of those interesting documentaries that make you wonder what really happened. I took most of their "facts" with a grain of salt. Though I think the movie raises enough questions to make you want to check into it further. The filmed government hearings alone are enough to make you want to know more. So it's worth watching, just to get somebody else's view of what happened.

4 out of 5 stars Tendentious but unforgettable.......2007-01-20

First, the flaws. The (very dramatic)FLIR section--purporting to show that the Davidian compound was fired upon by the government's forces during the catastrophic fire--has been shown to be meritless. Interviews and testimony have been edited so as in some cases to misrepresent the opinions of those shown and quoted. The dishonesty, incompetence, and venality of the US government and its agencies in this ghastly, sickening tragedy are glaring enough that there's no need to distort the truth in order to get the point across.

Nonetheless, what happened to the Davidians was so horrible, and this film is so powerfully made, that it will haunt you.

3 out of 5 stars This same corrupt government..........2006-10-09

Has killed alot more people in Iraq than Waco. Ours and theirs all for some made up excuse about "Weapons of Mass Destuction" and Religous Zealots. Sound familiar? The only problem the war is taking us down a terrible path.

5 out of 5 stars Congress rips them up!.......2006-06-24

This video will show you hands down the corruption of the government. Unlike 911, this was not covered up very well at all. A lot of evidence was avaiable.

I was VERY VERY amazed by this one, but not at all shocked.
