Product Description
Prop man turned director Charles Lamont was a master at directing short and feature length comedies. Among his more famous directional efforts are Shirley Temple and the Three Stooges. In this classic feature film - a full-length murder mystery - Lamont demonstrates his versatility as director. A2ZCDS have brought this old Hollywood Classic feature films on DVD. "Director Charles Lemonts versatility at directing movies, based on a wide range of topics from side-splitting comedies to hair raising horrors and mind boggling mysteries, is evidenced in this enthralling vintage murder mystery that has the audience guessing for the better part of the show. Based on an amazingly intriguing plot, the narrative is full of twists and turns, making it very difficult for anybody to guess who held the murder weapon. Some award-worthy performances from Irene Ware, Ray Walker and Berton Churchill help in adding to the charisma of this historic classic. The absorbing account ends just when you are congratulating yourself and saying, "Hey, Ive got it all figured out". Few, if any, among the audience are likely to deduce who the real villain is. Experience this mystifying drama from A2ZCDS, which will leave you shaking your heads in disbelief when the plot finally unfolds!"

3 out of 5 stars The Dark Hour.......2006-07-29

It is difficult to judge this film. It is 70 years old, acting and directing methods have changed, the acting may appear to be stiff, it is better than today's talent.

2 out of 5 stars "Dressing as a woman ... I know it's illegal.".......2005-12-14

When wealthy, crotchety bachelor Henry Carson (William V Mong) is found murdered in his study, there are plenty of suspects. Henry Carson and his reclusive brother Charles (Hobart Bosworth) lived together in a remote mansion with their niece Elsa (Irene Ware). Shortly before his death, Henry seemed nervous, and no one is exactly sure how he made all his money. Young detective John Landis (Ray Walker) is romancing Elsa, and so more experienced, retired detective Paul Bernard (Berton Churchill) steps in to help solve the crime. The suspects include: a sneaky butler, a garden prowler, the cross-dressing uncle, Elsa's Aunt Tallman (Hedda Hopper) and an ambitious chemist who lives next door.

Directed by Charles Lamont, "The Dark Hour" is fairly unexciting, standard fare, and the entire production contains a stiffness and artificiality that is unappealing. While the conclusion of the investigation is unnecessarily complicated (it's impossible to guess who murdered Uncle Henry), little time is spent on motive. The idea that the plot contains a cross dresser makes the film sound more interesting than it is, but there's still some fun to be gained by watching 30s detective work. This Alpha DVD print was decent with just a few white vertical lines at the very beginning of the film--displacedhuman

5 out of 5 stars A Departure for Charles Lamont.......2006-05-23

Charles Lamont as a director is more well known for his classic comedies and this film is a rare departure for him from his usual Shirley Temple fare. In this effort he tries to create a suspensful murder mystery and succeeds very well. He does so using almost no stars. He's helped along by a very strong script that kept be guessing to the end and the fact that he clearly had more money to work with than most guys of the film noir era. A top notch job all around.

5 out of 5 stars a veteran mystery aficionado - till the very end.......2006-05-03

"Agatha Christie couldn't have come up with a more gripping yarn. Berton Churchill and Irene Ware outdo themselves and do complete justice to their roles. `The Dark Hour's plot is so finely tuned that it baffled me - a veteran mystery aficionado - till the very end."
