4 out of 5 stars A must for the avid fan's.......2007-05-19

Great movie selections, old fashioned camera tricks, if you missed the good old days or just waana relive the memories of your childhood, watching these movies really do remind me of my simple and fun days as a kid.

They're not bad at all, they are classics and worth to be in your DVD collections.

5 out of 5 stars Harryhausen Rules !!.......2007-05-16

It's always fun to watch Ray Harryhausen's films. Stop animation is all but a lost art because of computer graphics. CG is cool too, but there's a nostalgia with stop animation. Save for Tim Burton and the Wallace and Gromit folks, no one is doing it anymore and I think it's so much fun to watch. All of the movies in this Harryhausen set are worth watching. The best one is Jason and the Argonauts. It's also fun seeing that at the end of all the Sinbad movies, two creatures always duke it out while Sinbad and his crew are trying to get away. So grab your popcorn and have a nostalgic movie night with this set!

5 out of 5 stars A must for Sci-Fi enthusiasts.......2007-01-15

My family grew up watching these movies.I purchased this series right before the holidays and it was really fun watching the younger kids faces light up as they watched for the first time at our family Christmas party. I'm sure we will get hours of enjoyment out of this "fantastic" collection.

5 out of 5 stars "All of Sinbad".......2007-01-10

I was very pleased with my purchase. I am a fan of "Sinbad" and was so
happy to get this. It's so nice to be able to watch any time I want.
Any "Sinbad" fans would do well to order this product.

"Now you see it. You're amazed. You can't believe it. Your eyes open wider. It's horrible, but you can't look away. There's no chance for you. No escape. You're helpless, helpless. There's just one chance, if you can scream. Throw your arms across your eyes and scream, scream for your life!" And scream Fay Wray does most famously in this monster classic, one of the greatest adventure films of all time, which even in an era of computer-generated wizardry remains a marvel of stop-motion animation. Robert Armstrong stars as famed adventurer Carl Denham, who is leading a "crazy voyage" to a mysterious, uncharted island to photograph "something monstrous ... neither beast nor man." Also aboard is waif Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) and Bruce Cabot as big lug John Driscoll, the ship's first mate. King Kong's first half-hour is steady going, with engagingly corny dialogue ("Some big, hard-boiled egg gets a look at a pretty face and bang, he cracks up and goes sappy") and ominous portent that sets the stage for the horror to come. Once our heroes reach Skull Island, the movie comes to roaring, chest-thumping, T. rex-slamming, snake-throttling, pterodactyl-tearing, native-stomping life. King Kong was ranked by the American Film Institute as among the 50 best films of the 20th century. Kong making his last stand atop the Empire State Building is one of the movies' most indelible and iconic images. --Donald Liebenson

DVD features
Not surprisingly, the eighth wonder of the world's DVD treatment is nothing short of spectacular. The newly restored, digitally mastered print of the 1933 version of King Kong is sharp, well balanced, and given that this film is seventy years old, has very few scratches or blemishes. The restoration is nothing short of amazing. What may frustrate some is the audio. Though crystal clear, it is still in 2.0 Mono. The soundtrack on Kong is such an integral part of the film you really wished they could have pulled it out to at least 2.0 Surround; but this is a minor criticism. The bulk of the commentary track is by visual effects veterans Ray Harryhausen and Ken Ralston joyfully discussing the special effects of the film and discussing why King Kong is such a favorite and important film to the community of visual effects artists. Spliced between their commentaries are colorful and humorous anecdotes from director from Merian C. Cooper and Fay Wray. The two documentaries on disc two run over three and half hours long. I Am Kong! The Exploits of Merian C. Cooper is an engaging documentary on the renegade, Hemingway-like director. It is fascinating to learn that Cooper was every bit the adventurer that the fictional director Carl Denham in King Kong was in the film. RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong, Eighth Wonder of the World is a two and a half hour documentary broken into 7 parts: "The Origins of King Kong," "Willis O'Brien and Creation," "Cameras Roll on Kong," "The Eighth Wonder," "A Milestone in Visual Effects," "Passion, Sound and Fury," "The Mystery of the Lost Spider Pit Sequence," and "King Kong's Legacy." Also included is complete footage of the legendary "The Lost Spider Pit Sequence." Presenting the segments are various film historians and filmmakers including Rudy Behlmer, Cooper biographer Mark Cotta Vaz, the Chiodo Brothers (of Team America: World Police special effects fame), and directors John Landis and Peter Jackson. Here you will learn everything you would ever want to know about the making and importance of King Kong, including that the producer/director team of Cooper and Schoedsack played the pilots who shoot Kong off the Empire State Building. The highly anticipated, long-awaited release of King Kong will meet most viewers' expectations, and exceed everyone's else. --Rob Bracco

Description

Seeking a backer for his movie, Merian C. Cooper approached a top Hollywood mogul. "You know what a 50-foot gorilla would see in a five-foot girl?" the mogul asked. "His breakfast!" The studio chief wasn't buying but the public was. King Kong saved RKO from bankruptcy and became an all-time classic, ranking 43rd on the American Film Institute's list of Top-100 American Movies. King Kong teems with memorable moments: a moviemaking expedition on a fantastic isle filled with dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures; the giant simian's lovestruck obsession with the film shoot's blonde starlet (scream queen Fay Wray); Kong's capture; his Manhattan rampage; and the fateful finale atop the Empire State Building, where Kong cradles his palm-sized beloved and swats at machine-gunning airplanes. "It was beauty killed the beast." But in these and other great scenes, Kong lives forever.

5 out of 5 stars King Kong (1933).......2007-01-04

I now have all three versions of this story. I prefer the 1933 original
version. The last release was OK, but I felt overwelmed by the CGI stuff.
The 1976 version just did not produce. The original, projected the terror
and the love intrest of Kong.

5 out of 5 stars IT WAS BEAUTY THAT KILLED THE BEAST..........2006-05-29

As a young child in the nineteen fifties, I used to watch this film whenever it appeared on TV on "Million Dollar Movie". I loved it then. I love it now. Time has not diminished the capacity of this film to mesmerize and hold the viewer in its thrall.

The story line is basic. Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong), a filmmaker and entrepreneur, leads an expedition to Skull Island where he discovers its deep, dark secret. It is a land where time has stood still, and prehistoric monsters still hold sway over the island and its inhabitants. There, the natives pay homage to the one whom they revere as "Kong", and who is, indeed, king of the island.

Denham, together with his beautiful, budding starlet, Ann Darrow (Fay Wray), as well as with the crew of the ship that brought him to Skull Island, investigates the strange ritual being performed on the island by its native population. Before she knows it, Ann finds herself captured by the natives. She is to become the bride of the mysterious "Kong".

When Ann discovers who the mysterious "Kong" is, she starts screaming and doesn't stop. The ship's first mate, Jack Driscoll (Bruce Cabot), who happens to be in love with Ann, manages to rescue her from the clutches of "Kong". Notwithstanding the fact that "Kong" has taken a shine to her, Ann is relieved to have been rescued by the man whom she loves.

Denham then arranges to capture the creature, whom he calls "King Kong" and takes him back to New York with them on the ship that brought them to Skull Island. There, King Kong makes his debut, one that movie lovers will long remember.

The special effects of this film were superlative for its time and still pass muster today. The relationship between the beauty and the beast still makes the viewer sit up and take notice. This is an attention grabbing film that is as exciting today, as when it was first released over seventy years ago. It is a truly timeless, cinema classic. Bravo!

Ebulliently imaginative and far more cleverly presented than you would expect from a TV miniseries, this satirical adventure succeeds by never pandering to the lowest common denominator. Closely based on Jonathan Swift's 1726 classic, it is enhanced by dazzling special effects from Jim Henson Productions and a superb, multi-ethnic cast. The biggest surprise is Ted Danson in the title role--one of his best performances, even if he is the only person in England without an accent. He conveys amusement, amazement, and intelligence as he travels from one strange country into another. Not that anyone back in Merry Old England believes Mr. Gulliver's tales of little people or giants. The story is told in flashback from an insane asylum, where he is forcibly confined. This far outshines several previous adaptations of Swift's satirical novel. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2007-05-26

Most films on Gulliver's travels show Lilliputian and not much else. This movie tries to follow the book. Overall they did a good job.

The story was well done. The guy comes back after a long-time and tells people what he has seen. Of course no-one believes such stories of small people, giants, flying castles and intelligent horses. He has to prove that he is sane.

The acting was good. I liked the scene where he is explaining to the audience in the madhouse, how he was flying in the air in a castle.

5 out of 5 stars Long way out for a short way home.......2007-05-17

Gulliver the book and Gulliver the movie are different but, after a while, the difference stops being important. In the book, Gulliver is superior to all of his adventures. He possesses a perspective on the whims and eccentricities of kings in a writing meant as a criticism of all who hold themselves superior. The movie Gulliver enjoys his status at court. His sincere explanations/justifications of England's political practices seem even more ridiculous in the telling than in the reading. What movie Gulliver finally focuses on are the relationships between himself and his wife and son. They remained faithfull to him despite his having abandoned them. The wife's defense for her husband is that Gulliver has harmed no one. The son's providing the critical piece of evidence deflects the prosecution. Gulliver discovers that everything that he left home to find was already there. The book Gulliver remains aloof from everyone.

Dear Sirs, I have not received the order so far. I only wish I have.

5 out of 5 stars J. Swift would be proud.......2007-03-08

This is almost the perfect movie for the book. Though they invented a framed narrative that wasn't in the book, it makes the movie so much more powerful and believable. It also unifies the story under one overarching narrative.

Really memorable performance by Ted Danson. It's hard to imagine anyone else as Lemuel Gulliver now.

5 out of 5 stars Special effects almost in the same league as those in Star Wars........2006-12-25

The film is told by way of flash backs. Gulliver (Ted Danson) finds himself ashore in England after a harrowing nine year absence from home. Unfortunately, once back at home in England, he suffers from periodic flashbacks wherein he provides narratives about his adventures in Lilliput, Brobdingnag, on a flying island, and elsewhere. Also unfortunately, even his wife (Mary Steenbergen; wife in real life too) does not believe the contents of his flash-back narratives. For example, towards the end of the movie she is asked if she believes her husband. Instead of saying "no," she avoids the question by replying, "I believe in him."

Everybody will be able to enjoy the brightly colored pomp and fanfares found in the various kingdoms that are encountered during Gulliver's travels. The special effects are almost as good as those found in the early Star Wars movies. Unlike most adventure movies, the movie under review has a high degree of character development. The credentials of the actors, e.g., Peter O'Toole, speak for themselves. Excellent "character actors" are also found, such as the rustic wheat farmer who discovers Gulliver and displays him in a one-man circus. In addition to the special effects, the presence of a boy character (Gulliver's son) and a girl character (wheat farmer's daughter) enhance the attraction of the film for kids.

What the movie is really "about" is not tiny villagers, flying islands, or talking horses. What the movie is really about is certain bizarre aspects of the social order, found at the time of Swift's writing. For example, one goal of the Gulliver story was to protest the practice of selling (as opposed to voting) government positions. Therefore, it might be to the advantage of any viewer, or parent, to become familiar with the social/political customs prevalent at the time. A suitable book (which actually covers France, not England), is The French Revolution and Human Rights by Lynn Hunt (1996). As with the Gulliver movie, this book explains the existance of formalized upper and lower classes, and the practice of selling government positions.

Product Description

"Gullivers Travels" was written by the famous 17th Century writer Jonathan Swift and adapted for the screen by Edmond Seward and his gifted team. The well-known tale is retold in a fascinating manner in this animated feature. The stunning visuals, hilarious dialogues, lively background music and vivid imagery witnessed throughout the film are characteristic of the Fliescher brothers, Max and David who produced and directed the movie. The visuals are absolutely stunning, considering the fact that this feature was produced in an age when computer assisted programs were unheard of. No detail is left to imagination and the story unfolds as an uninterrupted narrative. It is not surprising that he film went on to win two Academy Award Nominations - for the Best Original Score and the Best Song (Faithful Forever), and surely deserves the accolades that have been showered upon it through the decades."

...but not that well done. Disney had set the standard with Snow White, and the Fleischer's were just not up to it. Had Snow White not come out first, this would have impressed people more. But the Fleischer's Popeye cartoons were far superior to Disney's Mickey Mouse or any other character. While Disney still had the craft more perfected, but Fleischer had the characters with personality. There was something less sanitized and more subversive about Popeye and Betty Boop, and they were much funnier and entertaining than the restrained Disney shorts. Gulliver was simply not their strong suit. Historically, it's a significant piece and any animation historian should have it, but for somebody who simply wants to entertain, there are better options. If you're a real fan of the story itself, this is not the adaptation for you either. See the live action version with Ted Danson (I kid you not.)

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Old-Fashioned Cartoon.......2006-11-14

Lemuel Gulliver, the shipwrecked one, ends up in Lilliput. Its inhabitants are the Lilliputians--miniature people. To them, Lemuel is a giant, and they suspect that he is an enemy. So, while Lemuel Gulliver is sleeping, they tie him up. Upon awakening, he breaks free of the bonds, and shows the Lilliputians that he is their friend. The Lilliputians then love him.

But some enemies of the Lilliputians do not. They plot to kill him. They manage to steal Lemuel's flintlock pistol, and set it up as a "cannon". In time, they deploy it in order to fire at him.

In a battlefield scene, Lemuel Gulliver is dodging the miniature rocks hurled by the slingshots of the miniature-people enemies of the Lilliputians. Lemuel has no hostility to these people, and, in fact, wants to effect a reconciliation between them and the Lilliputians. He is completely unaware of the "cannon" set to be fired at him. I will not spoil the ending by informing the reader what happens to Lemuel Gulliver as he stands helplessly within sight of the barrel of the "cannon".

5 out of 5 stars A NOT so small achievement!.......2006-06-02

Walt Disney said of this film, the first non Disney animated feature to hit theaters just 2 years after Snow White (the first animated feature), "We could have done better than that with our second unit of animators". Well, that may or may not be true, depending on how one looks at the film. True, the animation overall, but particularly of the incidental and secondary characters, is a bit on the crude side. Also, the character designs, as a whole, seem a bit more dated than the earlier "Snow White". Still, one of the things I have always loved about the Fleischer Studio is that they were the one studio that never tried to be Disney. MGM, Universal and even early Warner Brothers tried to emulated the lush quality of Disney cartoons and, for the most part, always fell short because by the time they got to where Disney was, Disney was already far ahead of them. But the Fleischer cartoons were always different. They developed a kooky but brazen quality all their own. There is no mistaking a Fleischer cartoon from the 1930s to around 1942. They have a unique, eccentric look and way of movement that no other studio had. A quirky, imaginative, jaunty quality that was bold, innovative, and unashamed. Once the studio was taken away from the Fleischers and changed over to "Famous Studios" all that changed and the studio output became more mainstream. But, during the great Popeye, Betty Boop and Superman era, the Fleischer cartoons remained origina and uniquel. And even with the rather "rubbery" Prince and Princess and the somewhat stiff Rotoscoped looking Gulliver, this feature embodies all the wonderful Fleischer qualities of their shorts, pushed up a notch for a feature and embellished with lavish backgrounds and dimensional sets or "setbacks", great songs and a wonderful rich score by Victor Young. Don't miss Gulliver and, if you like that, check out "Hoppity Goes to Town", (the second and final Fleischer feature). It is also very enjoyable.

When I was a child my dad used to read Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" to me and I loved it. My favorite part was always when the liliputions tie him up and beat him even though they are so tiny.

Therefore when I saw this film on the list I knew I had to order it. I was very happy with what I got. This is an older (classic) cartoon that takes all of hte best scenes from gullivers travels and puts them together in a semi-musical format (there is not that much singing.)

It's very faithful to the book as I remember it as a kid.

This 1939 animated film is based on Jonathan Swift's classic novel about a sailor stranded on an island populated by people the size of his thumb. When Gabby, the town crier, discovers Gulliver on the beach, he runs to tell the king. But the king is preoccupied with the impending wedding of his daughter, Princess Gloria, to Prince David from the neighboring kingdom. When the kingdoms can't agree on which song to play at the wedding, Gulliver is caught in the middle of a war. His common sense helps the two sides resolve their dispute, but not before a lot of adventure and romance.

A milestone in the art of animation, this was the second animated motion picture of its magnitude ever produced, after Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It has been digitally mastered and visually enhanced, making it first-rate family entertainment even today. --Elisabeth Keating

4 out of 5 stars Innocent Pleasure........2007-06-13

I watched this with a 3 year old whose mother is very particular about what he watches, (absolutely no violence), and he loved it. It really is magical for innocent little ones. The songs are kind of cute when you watch them with someone so completely uncynical. He was captivated and told me what a great movie it was. After we watched it we went to a bookshop and bought the book, so it has stimulated an interest in literature as well. I recommend this one wholeheartedly for little kids, especially ones not ruined by too much TV. Or maybe you could use it as an antidote for much of the nasty "children's" product available now.

5 out of 5 stars This is definitely the version to get........2007-04-30

I've read that other versions of this dvd have omitted scenes for some weird reason. One scene in particular that was left out of the other version was the "All's well" song sung by gabby.

This version has it all, the picture quality is absolutely stunning. I own a VHS copy of this movie and i can't believe how beautiful this version looks. I'm seeing things on film i've never seen before. Another great feature of this dvd is the sound format. They offer several different sound formats, you can watch the movie with enhanced sound features, or just watch it with the original soundtrack, there are others i just can't remember.

Yes it has no subtitles, but i think you can live without subtitles. I'd rather have a complete movie without subtitles, than a movie that's been shortened with subtitles.

They also have some cool bonus features such as two Gabby episodes, showing you the cleaning up process of old fleischer films, and also how the old school fleischer films were made.

All in all for roughly 10 bucks, you're getting a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Great vintage cartoon.......2007-01-30

One of my boyhood favorites that never seems to get shown on TV. Just as I remember it...better, because now that I own it, I can show it to my grandkids whenever I want(they loved it!) Wonderful restoration of sound and color. Animation as good as you'll find anywhere. I highly recomend for families and those into real animation. For the same reasons I also recomend "Hoppity Goes To Town".

4 out of 5 stars Classic movie, and a fairly good DVD at that!.......2006-08-24

[...]

I bought this DVD for $[...] General and was very pleased with it. The transfer is not Criterion caliber, but considering some of the awful video and DVD copies available in the marketplace, this one's quite good, and even contains the original opening and closing Paramount logos, as well as the original theatrical trailer after the movie!

The movie itself is very enchanting and a great document of early color and early feature-length animation. The artwork is quite good for something not made by Disney, and the songs are lovely.

I truly suggest this DVD if you're looking for a cheap copy that's better than most available copies. Someday I may be able to get an even better copy, as I've heard of a couple out there that are considered to be very high quality. But for now, Diamond Entertainment's DVD is good enough for me.

1 out of 5 stars Gulliver's Travel.......2006-07-11

It's a very old and bad copy from a original and excellent clasic. A pity. Not have aditional idioms and subtitles, like spanish. This information it's out of the saling panel.

Imaginative special effects by the legendary Ray Harryhausen are the highlights of this adaptation of Jonathan Swift's classic fantasy novel. Kerwin Mathews, who rose to fame after appearing opposite Harryhausen's "Superdynamation" effects in The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958), stars as the English Dr. Gulliver, whose travels bring him in contact with both the diminutive Lilliputians and the gigantic Brobdingnagians. Director Jack Sher's script (with Arthur Ross) tempers Swift's pointed satire in favor of broader humor, and the musical numbers are decidedly unwelcome, but viewers of all ages will be delighted by the film's spirited action and Bernard Herrmann's rousing score. Harryhausen aficionados may be disappointed by the lack of fantastical creatures on display (though a giant squirrel and alligator are impressive), but his matte work here is nothing short of spectacular. --Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars No Monsters But Still Watchable.......2007-03-21

3 Worlds of Gulliver has some pretty high expectations to meet being that special effects master Ray Harryhausen was involved. The master of stop motion model effects, Harryhausen was responsible for creating giant Cyclops, Medusas and battling skeletons in other films like "Jason and the Argonauts" and "7th Voyage of Sinbad". Unfortunately, "Gulliver" did not call for such a roster of memorable creatures.

Most of the effects have to deal with size, true to the novel by Jonathan Swift. Gulliver either occupies a world of giants, or a world where he is the giant. Harryhausen pulls off these sequences quite convincingly using minatures, over-sized props, or perspective shots with the "giants" closer to the camera than the "little people.". Nevertheless, there are a few stop motion monsters that are in line with Harryhausen's other works- a giant alligator for Gulliver to fight in the land of the giants, and a giant chipmunk sequence that makes for one of the films best scenes. Still and all, despite the shortage of stop motion monsters, Gulliver is harmless entertaining family fun. It is a well mounted production that still holds up today, and completes the collection for any Harryhausen fan.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and witty film. . ........2007-01-29

Ray Harryhausen, Kerwin Matthews and company do a fine job with Jonathan Swift's outrageous and scathing satire, and it's a film the whole family can enjoy (although wee ones may be a bit scared of the alligator and laugh at the squirrel). I have no problem with the fullframe presentation, although it would have been nice to see it in its original ratio, letterboxed. The transfer is fine and crisp, and Bernard Herrmann's delightful score is clear and full. As for the aspect ratio, originally it was in 1:85, which is pretty darn close to TV framing, so fullframe doesn't really hurt THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER. The only Harryhausen film this would have been a problem with is FIRST MEN IN THE MOON, as that is his only film in 2:35 widescreen. Columbia does have their DVD edition of this film in its proper ratio. GULLIVER is just fine. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars the 3 Worlds of Gulliver.......2006-11-03

Its a great movie, good graphics non violent makes one use their imagination.

4 out of 5 stars quirky and wonderful version.......2006-01-13

This was one of the first films I ever saw and parts of it stuck in my imagination for 43 years. So, sitting down with my kids, I was very curious as to how I wd find it. In a nutshell, it is great.

But the most rewarding thing was how much my kids loved it, in particular my son. At 6, the whole story to him was fascinating and got him to ask me all sorts of questions, like, why are the Lilliputians arguning about such silly things and why are the giants so dumb? That is exactly what Swift was hoping to do with this tale, which espouses many of the theories (rationality, the uses of science in human society, etc.) that were becoming popular with the enlightenment. What a delight to discuss these issues with my kids!! THen there are the characters, such as Gulliver's naivte, which leads to some life-threatening situations. Finally, there are the wonderful special effects - Harryhausen had a certain genius for his time - which are crude by today's standards by still enthralling.

Warmly recommended for the entire family. (Note: I got this as part of the 5-film package deal of Harryhausen films, which cost just 1/3 more than this stand-alone version and lacks the documentaries, which I don't think are worth the difference in price.)

3 out of 5 stars Noncombative answer to screen ratio transfer debate........2005-03-29

If you're considering a purchase of this title, but are wary because of the occasional misinformation and confusion regarding the original screen ratio and the preservation of this ratio in the transfer, then don't fret. With no intention of starting a debate, I can comfortably state that the film hasn't been re-formatted to fit your screen (although this is inaccurately stated before the film begins). Concerned that the studio/corporation had balked on an authentic widescreen transfer, I spent more time than I care to admit in pursuit of clues and/or answers without doing any severe film-scholar-like research. Anyway, although you may encounter what appears to be a 16X9 transfer in the U.K. and EU markets, I don't believe that these are any more accurate than the supposed widescreen preview/trailer found on several of the Harryhausen Collection discs. In fact, it's the very preview on "3 Worlds" for "3 Worlds" that solved the riddle. Here's the deal: It's a banded, or barred trailer (wherein the black bars at the top and bottom are actually hiding or covering the picture beneath). Whether this was done for exhibition on a 1:85 to 1 or 16X9 big screen, I can't say, but the visual material in between the bars is composed the same as the "supposedly" cropped transfer. I took a couple of easy-to-find images from the trailer and double-checked them by using the chapter search. Anyway, you don't want the widescreen version of "3 Worlds" anymore than you want a widescreen version of "Shane." It simply isn't the screen ratio in which these films were shot. If you think I'm wrong, then please check for yourself. Screen composition and visuals are only being compromised in the artificially "wide" versions. Lastly, while viewing this watered-down, but totally delightful feature, you'll notice that the on-screen composition fits the 1:37 to 1 ratio, which is to say that the character group shots fit very comfortably, as does the entirety of the film's action, while there aren't any distracting pan-and-scan artificial edits that usually show up during two-shot dialogue sequences and the like... Please pardon this messy and long-winded response to the transfer complaints that I came across, but I felt sort of obligated to save some time for those of you who may want to view or purchase this title, but may (understandably) hesitate due to the feedback conflict.

Okay, we all love the scene in "North By Northwest" in which Cary Grant is being chased across a field by the crop duster plane. It is a nail biting, edge of your seat scene, and we want to yell, "Look out Cary, it's coming back at you!" I would never take anything away from that class act, but fans of The Duke, may remember that he did it first about 27 years earlier, in this wonderful mystery/serial. And not only was he being chased by a stunt plane, but was carrying an injured woman in his strong arms at the same time!!! That's our guy, even early on, quite the hero.

"Shadow of the Eagle" is a real treat for John Wayne fans. It's runs about 3 hours, and the action and adventure, the mystery and suspense is non stop. Wayne plays Craig McCoy, a stunt pilot and is part of a traveling fair. When a mysterious pilot known as The Eagle", starts making murderous threats with sky-writing, our guy jumps into action to try and find this villain. Suspect everyone, suspect no one, as for 3 hours, the upper hand and evidence jumps back and forth between the bad guys and the good guys. Keep in mind this was an originally a 12 chapter serial, so each chapter may be considered a kind of cliff hanger.

What is most fun about the story is that all the performers of the traveling fair get involved in one way or another. Some are prime suspects(for a while), others, like the strong man, and the ventriloquist use their talents to help catch the criminal.

This film can be found on a DVD released by Platinum Disc(who do all those fun Great American Westerns). Although it starts out a little scratchy, I was very surprised by the quality of both the sound and the picture. It didn't get a total restoration, but a very decent view, and the film plays completely through with no breaks between the chapters. There are 3 other films of Wayne's included on this DVD. "Rainbow Valley", "His Private Secretary", and "Paradise Canyon", all from the 30's, and they do show their age). The DVD is simply called John Wayne" Enter B0001I2C4I into the DVD search and it will take you there, if you are interested in it. It is also part of a 2 pack John Wayne collection(9 films in total)Enter B0001OGVBM. So lots of choices here.

Witness the early beginnings of a legend in action...and enjoy!....Laurie

4 out of 5 stars okay, but not as good as Marengo Films previous version.......2005-08-25

Marengo Films decided to add back in the chapter stops to this latest version of 'Shadow Of The Eagle', and honestly, I have no idea why. What was a unique move on their part by eliminating the repetitive summaries between each chapter, is now back again...adding an unnecessary 40 minutes more to the viewing time. I'm glad I still have the original version they put out, as this version is just like every other one out there on the market. It's a shame they never put out 'The Hurricane Express' and 'The Three Musketeers' serials without the summary chapters as well. The first version of Marengo Films 'Eagle' is the one that really soars!

5 out of 5 stars THE NEW IMPROVED PRISTINE VERSION HAS ARRIVED.......2004-12-25

MARENGO FILMS IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE NEW VERSION OF THE SHADOW OF THE EAGLE IS AVAILABLE NOW. THE COMPANY RE-MASTERED THE FILM INTO CHAPTER FORMAT IN ADDITION THEY DID ANOTHER SOUND DESIGN, COLOR CORRECTIONS AND NEW CHAPTER CARDS. THIS DVD IS NOW THE BEST VERSION OF THIS SERIAL ON THE MARKET.

5 out of 5 stars A classic John Wayne.......2003-06-22

It is great to see John Wayne in the early years . It was both funny and action packed and comsidering it was 70 years ago it was of a great quality .

Wayne even went so far as to name his son Ethan after that character...The inscription on the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to him in 1979 reads, simply, "John Wayne, American."...After meeting the late Superman star Christopher Reeve at the 1979 Academy Awards, Wayne turned to Cary Grant and said "This is our new man. He's taking over."...Turned down the role of Marshal Dillon on "Gunsmoke" (1955) because he did not want to commit to a weekly TV series. He recommended his friend James Arness for the role, and gave the on camera introduction in the pilot episode...I would like to be remembered, well...the Mexicans have a phrase, 'Feo fuerte y formal'.
