Michael Winterbottom's amazing In This World is a docudrama that reportedly re-creates the harrowing journey of two young Afghan males smuggled, one step at a time, from a long-established refugee camp in Pakistan across central Asia to their London destination. Shot with remarkable fluidity and narrative thoroughness in what appears many times to be dangerous situations with border guards and untrustworthy handlers (in Iran, Istanbul, Turkey, and France), In This World is anchored by non-actors Jamal Udin Torabi and Enayatullah, playing characters of the same names. The rapid pace and frequent fade-outs in this 88-minute film paradoxically force one's imagination to underscore the agonizing slowness and anxiety of the young men's trip, a technique that becomes nightmarish when Jamal and Enayat are locked for days, with other refugees, inside a ship's container. Winterbottom (24-Hour Party People) and his characteristically protean style maintain remarkable inventiveness throughout. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Decent film that needed to be made.......2007-07-03
Be warned; dont watch this film with a strong moral view regarding imigration legal or otherwise this is simply the story of what many go through in order to reach the west.
We hear every day (in Europe at least) of iligal imigrants 'flooding the country' but we know almost nothing about them. This film goes some way to answer that question. Many are simply economic migrants rather than fleeing persecution in their homeland and many are arriving on our shores for no other reason that financial.
We see in the film how they bribe their way across Pakistan to Iran, how they change their clothes to 'blend in' with the locals, taken from there to South East Turkey (the smugglers heartland of that country) where they stay with Kurdish smugglers, passed on to sweat shops in the big cities they work until being shipped off to Europe.
The actors are genuine not least because they are migrants from their homeland its an interesting insight into the people we see everyday. From those begging or street vending in the big cities to working in the back of resturants or on building sites.
Recomended film.

I feel that the words "gripping documentary film" is inacurate for two reasons. I would not quite call it a documentary, as it is all reinactment, and, secondly, I think "gripping" is a stretch. I always welcome a chance to be reminded of the realities of life for those in less priveledged societies, but I felt that was really the most that this movie offered.
Unusual combination.......2005-09-29
Terrific film, realistic and informative, and dramatic without being overly dramatic. Shot like a documentary, and usually with the slower pace of a documentary, too. It shows you how difficult the journey really is, it shows you a little of what the cultures are like, compared with each other, it shows you what the land looks like. It's also a great variation on the road picture.
I am glad I finally saw it..........2005-08-21
I watched this movie with a lump in my throat. While I can understand how to some people, this film may have lacked some background information, to me, it was just perfect. The subject is not uncommon, the characters only wanted a better life, and as someone mentioned, they did not care about politics and money, as most people don't, contrary to popular believes. The movie concentrated on the journey and nothing else. I loved every minute of the movie no matter how uncomfortable it was. I was touched by the humanity of the people and I am grateful that the director didn't squeeze any emotionally charged moment, because simply put, I would have bawled. I am not sure I care about the presentation of the movie as much as I care about the point it drove home and this was far more superior to anything else.
Powerful and moving.......2005-08-17
This movie is powerful and shot in such a way that it feels real. This movie gives us the perspective of two Afghan refugees who want to get from Pakistan to London, and reveals the danger and risk of such a long journey. I highly recommend this movie as it gives us a small peek into the hazardous journey that many many refugees try to make every year.

great!.......2006-05-26
This old Holmes fan absolutley adores Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century. Very well done! I just wish all of the episodes were available.
Quality.......2006-03-20
This DVD is nice. It's good to have more of these episodes on DVD, however this collection (just four episodes) is a bit on the skimpy side. I wish it contained more, or that they just released boxed sets already... Bottom line, if you like the series, you'll like this DVD. :)
Eyes and brains Watson.......2005-08-23
This is an excellent disc of a great series.I am a fan of the
old black and white episodes, but this is good too. The animation is very nice, the music good and most of the stories
are interesting and can be watched several times before you know them too well. Use your eyes and brains and give it a chance.
My children love it :).......2004-10-04
Our children, boys and girls, from 11 to 5 love this dvd. It is Sherlock Holmes of a childs dreams. I see that the original series had 26, I wish they were all on dvd. They may be simple or even simplistic rejuvinations of the authors original works, but they may spark our children into reading the full, indepth versions as they grow. :)
Good Clean Fun!
Enjoyable animation adaptations.......2004-05-29
In 1999-2002 Scottish Television Enterprises released 26 anime-influenced episodes that mostly adapted the classic stories of Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle. Although intended for children, the animations are enjoyable to adult fans of Sherlock Holmes to see where characters, plot threads, and dialog has been lifted from the original stories. The animations are well done, and the episodes have some surprisingly sophisticated vocabulary, as "conundrum" and "sibling rivalry."
Seven of the 26 episodes have been released on two DVDs issued by different companies:
(1) The fall & rise of Sherlock Holmes (released 4/02 by Trimark) contains (TT 1.18):
The fall and rise of Sherlock Holmes [adaptation: The final problem]
The crime machine [adaptation: The valley of fear]
The hounds of the Baskervilles: [adaptation: The Hound of the Baskervilles]
The sign of four
also: a multiple-choice game
(2) Out of this world (released 9/03) by UAV contains (TT 1.28):
The sign of four
The adventures of the dancing men
Silver Blaze
The Gloria Scott
Note that "The sign of four" is duplicated. "Fall," "Crime," and "Hounds" are the first three episodes;
the other episodes are out-of-sequence.
The episodes are enjoyable if watched in small doses, for example, for snippets of dialogue from the canon, plus robotics and modernistic stuff like "DNA scans." The first episode ("Fall") will be of greatest interest in transporting Holmes from the 20th to 22nd century.

Product Description
Australia released, PAL/Region 4 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: Farsi (Dolby Digital 5.1), English (Subtitles), ANAMORPHIC WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SYNOPSIS: Michael Winterbottom's film about two young Afghan refugees trying to reach London begins on the Pakistani border and unfolds on the blurry frontier between documentary and fiction. Shot in digital video with non-professional actors, it has a harsh immediacy that forces you to confront the terrible plight of the world's displaced people one face at a time. But this story of peril, frustration and heartbreak also has moments of great warmth and vitality. Jamal (Jamal Udin Torabi), the younger of the two travelers, has a tough, impish joie de vivre, and as he and his cousin make their way west, they encounter decency as well as indifference. This movie has the paradoxical effect of forcing you to confront the enormity of the world's cruelty and the overwhelming scale of its suffering, and at the same time making you feel glad to be in it.
Okay........2007-04-10
