When Julie Andrews sang "The hills are alive with the sound of music" from an Austrian mountaintop in 1965, the most beloved movie musical was born. To be sure, the adaptation of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's Broadway hit has never been as universally acclaimed as, say, Singin' in the Rain. Critics argue that the songs are saccharine (even the songwriters regretted the line "To sing through the night like a lark who is learning to pray") and that the characters and plot lack the complexity that could make them more interesting. It's not hard to know whom to root for when your choice is between cute kids and Nazis.

Charmian Carr, who played
Liesl von Trapp in The
Sound of Music. |
It doesn't matter. Audiences fell in love with the struggling novice Maria (Andrews), the dashing Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), and, yes, the cute kids, all based on a real-life World War II Austrian family. Such songs as "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and the title tune became part of the 20th century Zeitgeist. In addition, The Sound of Music officially became a cult hit when audiences in London began giving it the Rocky Horror Picture Show treatment, attending showings dressed as their favorite characters and delivering choreographed comments and gestures along with the movie. So why resist, especially when the 40th Anniversary Edition is the best DVD yet.
The DVDs
As if the direct involvement of Julie Andrews weren't enough, the 40th Anniversary Edition of The Sound of Music is a must-have for fans because of the fond sense of nostalgia that will touch all but the worst cynic's heart. Andrews introduces both discs and contributes a commentary track on the film. It's a joy to hear her speak about the film (for example, she explains how she solved her dislike for the lyrics of "I Have Confidence"), and also heard are remarks by Christopher Plummer (who at one point refers to his being 48, which if true would mean his comments were made in about 1975), Charmian Carr (Liesl), choreographer Dee Dee Wood, and Johannes Von Trapp (the real-life Maria Von Trapp's youngest son, who admits that his father did have a whistle but claims that he was not as stern as portrayed in the film). Even with all those people involved, there are still significant gaps of silence, however. Retained from the previous two-disc editions is the commentary track by director Robert Wise, which during the musical numbers becomes an isolated score with no vocals. Also new are sing-along subtitles in English, Spanish, and French, which allow you to have your own sing-along at home. In addition, the film's remastering shows off a truer and much warmer sense of color.
On the second disc, Andrews participates in a new 63-minute documentary "My Favorite Things: Julie Andrews Remembers." But it's really a general making-of documentary with contributions from a number of principals, including director Robert Wise, who died in mid-2005 (not surprisingly, some stories are repeated from the commentary track and from the 87-minute documentary on the previous DVD). Andrews also shares a warm 19-minute sit-down with Christopher Plummer. Carr, who over the years has become the film's biggest advocate, narrates a new 22-minute documentary, "On Location with The Sound of Music," in which she revisits the places in Salzburg where the movie was filmed, and even joins one of the "Sound of Music tours" that have become a booming industry. And acknowledging another big industry, there's a 12-minute featurette on the sing-along phenomenon, focusing specifically on the audience, costumed and otherwise, that attended a sold-out Hollywood Bowl sing-along in 2005. Making special appearances at the event are four von Trapp great-grandchildren and all seven of the actors who played the children. Thankfully, those actors also appear in a 33-minute documentary "From Liesl to Gretl: A 40th Anniversary Reunion," in which they explain what they do now (many are still in show business) and share stories about the film, who was afraid of Christopher Plummer, and what they feel is their responsibility to the film's passionate fans. What's touching is how the group still considers themselves a family so many years later. Other material includes an A&E documentary on the von Trapps, Mia Farrow's screen test for the Liesl role, and a restoration comparison.
What's Missing?
If you already own the previous two-disc editions, you'll want this 40th Anniversary Edition as well, but you might not want to toss those versions. Probably the most significant omission from this edition is the original 14-minute documentary Charmian Carr made in 1967, "Salzburg Sight and Sound." Carr's new documentary includes only a couple clips from the vintage piece. It's not a great work of art, but it's a notable loss and would have made a good contrast with the new documentary. In addition, the new making-of documentary is about 24 minutes shorter than the old one. Also missing are the audio-only features--the interviews, the radio programs, the Ernest Lehman spotlight--and the historical still gallery examining the history of Salzburg and the film. Granted, this material probably got the least play of any of the old features, but completists might want to hold onto their old discs for it. It would have also been nice to have screen tests other than Farrow's. Tests for all the children and for Christopher Plummer (including singing in his own voice before he was dubbed for the film) were included on Hollywood Screen Tests and Rodgers and Hammerstein: The Sound of Movies. Again, they're not critical but it would have been nice to have them all in one place. So maybe the 40th Anniversary Edition isn't the complete package on The Sound of Music, but it's the most satisfying edition yet, with enough new material to please even the veteran SoM DVD watcher. --David Horiuchi

The Sound of Music.......2007-07-02
Shot in pristine color on location near Salzburg--and featuring that dizzying opening shot of Maria belting out the title tune from a verdant hilltop--"Music" fully deserves its reputation as one of the most popular films of all time. The daisy-fresh Andrews is simply terrific, whether she's acting or singing, and the songs--"Do Re Mi," "Climb Every Mountain," and "My Favorite Things"--have become part of our cultural heritage. Adapted from the Rodgers and Hammerstein Broadway play, the film might be a bit schmaltzy at moments, but in all, it remains utterly irresistible. The hills are still alive--and your singing pipes will be too--with the wondrous "Sound of Music."
the magic is alive..........2007-06-26
I was only six but I still remember when my mother took us kids to the movies to see 'The Sound of Music'. A memory permantly ingrained as is this film. From the most amazing opening shot ever filmed this classic film never lets go of yor senses. It's fun, thrilling and holds up extremely well. Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer are exquisite. Sure some of the lyrics are corny and simple but it all works and I'm not even a fan of musicals.
Pure Magic.......2007-06-25
Who doesn't know the general plot of this movie? Well just in case: Maria is thinking of becoming a nun, yet Sister Superior isn't so sure about that and sends her off to become the governess to seven Von Trapp children. There she meets the very strict father and the not so angelic children. She quickly wins over the children and their father. While all this is going on the Nazis are slowly but surely taking over the country. By the second half of the movie they become a true family and decide to make a dareing escape from the Nazis.
Now that pretty much wraps it up plot wise, yet there is so much more. The songs are very sugar coated but so what? They are there for a purpose: teaching children to not be afraid, coaching them on how to sing, etc. In most parts they are there for the pleasure of the young and the young at heart.
I'll close with an example. I was driving with my wife and our girls in the car, and we were looking at about an hour trip to my mother's house so we popped The Sound of Music in the DVD and we were on our way. As I heard (I coudn't see the movie of course) the movie and we sang the songs on our journey, I looked back and every face was smiling. Now if you are looking for a movie like that you've come to the right place.
The Sound of Music .......2007-06-11
A Family Night is made of... Sound of Music. Worth watching over and over.
saw it as a child and now at my 40s.. it still holds the magic.......2007-06-05
This review is about the movie and not the DVD Product-
I saw it yesterday, Im 43, last time I saw ir I was 28 and prior to that I was 12 the first time I saw it. It still holds the magic, and now I can say its a classic for all the family.
Yes, now I see details I previously did no see. The plot is so idillic that you don't feel the nazi presence inspiring fear, the love scenes are a perfect example of puritanism and political correctness. Yet there is love and there Julie Andrews gives a performance larger than life to captivate all public.
I do not know why in the review preface there is some critisims of the lyrics of the song "Sound of music"- those were elaborated lyrics and none of that senseless rap or overly simplistic lyrics. Sugarcoated? You bet, but just like the pinl lemonade they were sipping on the terrace, "its not too sweet, not too acid, its just too pink "
The movie has an ending that is rather sudden, just as it starts with that glorious song it should have ended with one as well, a triumph song. I still have the same feeling I did when I was 12, what happened to them?

It's still one of the sweetest kisses onscreen, up there with Bergman and Grant, Bogey and Bacall: the moment when pampered purebred Lady and streetwise mongrel Tramp, sharing a moonlit plate of spaghetti in an alley behind an Italian café, unknowingly slurp the same strand, and suddenly find their mouths meeting in surprise and tenderness. Ah, puppy love. Lady and the Tramp is a delight of animation and surprisingly deep character development, given that the stars are all dogs. Lady, an adorable Cocker Spaniel, feels neglected when her owners become distracted by the pending birth of a baby. But the last straw is clueless Aunt Sarah's appearance with her conniving Siamese cats (among Disney's most creatively evil villains), who wreak havoc on Lady's blissful home life. Soon Lady is off on an adventure in the streets, where the savvy Tramp takes her under his paw. The lessons of friendship and loyalty, of integrity--not to mention trusting in the kindness of strangers--ring true to delighted children and adults alike. And unlike many Disney films, there's no real violence, only challenges that smart dogs (including a tough-talking vamp named Peg, voiced sublimely by Peggy Lee, who also wrote the songs), banding together, can tackle. The animation is terrific; the scene where we first meet Tramp shows him rinsing off under a pipe, and his subsequent shaking-off of the water follows the detailed rippling up and down his back that any dog lover will recognize. And is there any song more romantic than "Bella Notte"? Bellissima! --A.T. Hurley

Lady and the Tramp.......2007-06-26
One of Disney's most endearing family classics, "Tramp" is a marvel of lively animation, bright voice acting, and sensational songwriting, courtesy of the inimitable Peggy Lee (who also voices the sinister twin kitties, Si and Am.) Watching a pampered female pooch fall for a declassé but charismatic male doggie is not only fun but enlightening about the magic of mutual attraction. And the famous spaghetti-slurping scene leading to a surprise first kiss is charming no matter how many times you view it. Highlights include the vamp-y "He's a Tramp" and "Siamese Cat Song."
It's Lady And The Tramp And We Love It!.......2007-06-25
LADY AND THE TRAMP is my favorite of all the Disney animated films. It has great memorable characters from the down on her luck show dog Peg (voiced by the fabulous Peggy Lee who also voices a couple of other characters) to Aunt Sarah's sly pair of Siamese cats. The music is also among the best from Disney with "Bella Noche", Quiet As a Snowflake" and especially "He's A Tramp" with the wonderful dog pound chorus as well as a couple of other memorable songs. The film touts the virtures of both pure bred dogs like the beautiful sweet Cocker Spaniel Lady and also the advantages of mixed breeds like her clever Heinz 57 mate Tramp. This movie is a must for dog lovers and can be enjoyed by all ages.
Memories.......2007-06-09
Just as I remembered it with my son (now 42)and enjoyed equally with my grandkids (3 & 5)
Lady and the Tramp.......2007-05-18
Lady and the Tramp was one of my favorite movies in childhood. Watching it again only supports my endeared feelings I have had for so many years. I am glad I was able to watch, go back and experience like I did when I was a child. This movie, I will always hold dear. The talent has transcended into this decade and has kept the meaning of romance and true love alive with the music and animation.
Sweet Disney classic.......2007-05-15
Gorgeous Disney classic film. An original, beautiful story in a new format that can't be missed. The extras make this a very special edition.

Cary Grant's penultimate feature before retirement was this cheerful 1964 effort to overturn his career-long image of urbane sophistication. As the unshaven, messy misanthrope Walter Eckland, a World War II-era beach bum who monitors Japanese air activity for the Australian navy in exchange for booze, Grant makes a convincingly hard-bitten, hard-drinking antihero. Until, that is, a pretty French schoolmistress (Leslie Caron) and her seven little charges (all girls) survive a nearby plane crash and invade Eckland's raunchy isolation. Directed by 1960s hit-maker Ralph Nelson (The Lilies of the Field, Charly), Father Goose is a glossy comedy that also does justice to its more suspenseful scenes (a deadly snakebite suffered by Caron's character is especially memorable) and leaves plenty of room for Grant to indulge in some entertaining if atypical screen behavior. All in all, this is a minor treat in the actor's magnificent filmography. --Tom Keogh

Great Movie!!!.......2007-05-16
I was practically raised on this movie. I have so many memories of watching it with my grandpa, and the movie never loses it's sense of excitement for me. While not sure if I am truly a Cary Grant fan, I still absolutely adore this film. It's one of those things that I can't get out of my system. I could watch this movie repetitively until I die, and still never get enough!!!1

Timeless classic...a must for anyone's movie collection. A near perfect role for Grant at that time in his career and it's a brilliant performance.

One of the finest American musicals, this 1944 film by Vincente Minnelli is an intentionally self-contained story set in 1903, in which a happy St. Louis family is shaken to their roots by the prospect of moving to New York, where the father has a better job pending. Judy Garland heads the cast in what amounts to a splendid, end-of-an-era story that nicely rhymes with the onset of the 20th century. The film is extraordinarily alive, the characters strong, and the musical numbers are so splendidly part of the storytelling that you don't feel the film has stopped for an interlude. --Tom Keogh
Description
St. Louis 1903. The well-off Smith family has four beautiful daughters, including Esther and little Tootie. 17-year old Esther has fallen in love with the boy next door who has just moved in, John. He however, barely notices her at first. The family is shocked when Mr. Smith reveals that he has been transfered to a nice position in New York, which means that the family has to leave St. Louis and the St. Louis Fair.

Meet Me in St Louis (1944).......2007-06-28
Mid-October through the Christmas Holiday's we never seem to watch TV. But are DVD player is going most of the day.
My daughter and I loved this addition to our Christmas Holiday collection. I only wish I had ordered the DVD...a slip up on my part somehow.
Anyway, it is a great holiday classic and a treat for the whole family.
A Double Scoop of Nostalgia.......2007-06-16
So much has been written about Vincente Minnelli's MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that I'm hardly being original in observing that one of the benefits the film provides a contemporary viewer is that it offers a "double dose" of nostalgia--both for a time that virtually no one currently alive can remember (the turn of the LAST century) and for the golden era of Hollywood musicals (which significantly more certainly can). Both appear to have been simpler, more innocent times. And therein lies much of this classic musical's appeal.
Non-ironic nostalgia has been a tough sell in Hollywood for decades now, in no small part due to this film's star herself. The all-too-familiar tragedy of Judy Garland's life and death casts something of a pallor over the good cheer and sentiment of many of her early films. The charm of a film, wherein a family's biggest problem is that they may have to move from their beloved home town if the pater familias accepts a promotion might begin to pale compared to the real life drama of its star, who in later life almost lost her home to the IRS. And let's not even get started on Judy's real life "boys next door."
In some ways, though, the complexities of Judy Garland's real life--and our own--actually serve to make this film all the more poignant. You might wonder if the driven young Judy Garland of 1944 didn't herself yearn for the simpler life of a turn-of-the-century Mid-Western belle like Esther Smith, whose life seems to revolve around tennis matches, trolley rides and lively social gatherings--and lots and lots of occasions to sing her heart out. Which is never a bad thing.
That three of the movies songs ("The Boy Next Door," "The Trolley Song," and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas") would become concert staples for Judy throughout her career should count for something. You could say that St. Louis provided her with more of her standard repertoire than Oz ever did. Moreover, all the numbers are beautifully shot, as is the entire movie. Vincente Minnelli was justly lauded for his visual sensibility, and it was never better realized than in this gorgeous film.
One of the ironies about the great Hollywood musicals is that often the best of the breed had the slightest of plots. It's significant that Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli's own daughter Liza had HER biggest success with the much darker, infinitely more cynical neo-musical CABARET. But even at its most willfully innocent, MEET ME AT ST. LOUIS hints at things that are darker and scarier than the day-to-day bustle of hearth and home. The genuinely spooky Halloween sequence reminds us that our childhood innocence is also beset with childhood fears.
A timeless classic!.......2007-06-14
This has been a favorite with our family since it first came out on VHS. It's a great classic movie with catchy songs and great dialog. Even in our modern day and age, the family touching and humorous family dynamics in this film still ring true. See it. You won't be disappointed!
Judy Garland at her very best.......2007-06-11
"Meet Me In St. Louis" is a timeless classic and one of Judy Garland's very best films. This is a beautiful and very wholesome movie that your entire family will surely enjoy because of the talents of Ms. Garland and the rest of the cast in this MGM classic. The music is also second to none. I only wish movies were still made like this.

Ranking just behind the best of animator Don Bluth's films (Anastasia and The Secret of NIMH), Thumbelina is a bubble-light version of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. The finger-sized heroine goes about the old-fashioned trials of trying to find a good man, but the film is clever enough to make it endearing for the 3-6 set and more than passable for adult viewers. Barry Manilow provides much of the song score, which helps immensely. The ballad "Let Me Be Your Wings" is as good as Disney's best. Carol Channing and Charo have a good ol' time with their songs too. The voice of Thumbelina is none other than Jodi Benson, who gave voice to Ariel in Disney's The Little Mermaid. --Doug Thomas
Customer Reviews:
Beutiful movie!.......2007-06-14
This is a beautiful movie! Fun for kids and for all family! The songs are great too! I recomend Thumbelina!
Not what I remember.......2007-05-06
I bought this since I thought this was an old favorite DVD when I was little but looking back, it just makes no sense and is really redundant. I only recommend for little children to watch.
Thumbelina DVD.......2007-01-16
The movie came in great condition. It took a really long time for it to get here but I think that had something to do with the bad snow storm in Colorado since it was stuck in Colorado forever. Overall it is great!!
Worthwhile if only for the score..........2007-01-13
Thumbelina is a delightful little tale set in Paris about little people (Namely, Thumbelina and Fairy Prince Cornelius) finding true love and overcoming impossible odds. A bit cliche, perhaps, but in my eyes, it never gets old. The only animated film that I enjoy as much is Anastasia, another movie by Don Bluth. If you like Disney style classics, (Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin.. etc..) you'll love Thumbelina. At 16 years old, I love it even better than when I used to watch it as a little girl and hum along with the songs. Speaking of the songs, I adore the music! Let Me Be Your Wings is so sweet, I would buy the DVD if only for that scene and song which replays in a few reprises throughout the movie. The other songs are also catchy, and although not as pretty, I dare you to listen to Jacquimo the sparrow's song, "Follow Your Heart" and not hum it to yourself the rest of the day. ;) I highly reccommend this movie to anyone with a love for Fairy Tales and good, clean romance.
Don Bluth's Thumbelina.......2007-01-11
I was so delighted to finally obtain the CD version of Thumbelina recently. I bought the VHS back in 1998 for my 4 year old daughter and she loved it. Besides the story, characters, and celebrity voices, it's the music that we still enjoy the most 8 years later. Barry Manilow's music, along with lyrics by Jack Feldman and Bruce Sussman are a gem. Thank you Amazon for rejuvinating my 12 year old daughter and I back to children again!

Fun is probably worth the purchase for "Mickey and the Beanstalk," the second half of this combo-film. "Beanstalk" includes the last performance by Walt Disney of Mickey Mouse. It also has Donald Duck and Goofy as comrades who climb the beanstalk in their back yard to face Willy the Giant. This segment actually achieves the goals of the film's title. The first half, however, is "Bongo," the story of a addlepated circus bear. "Bongo" is more poky and interest-free. Dinah Shore warbles and narrates the segment, and it goes on much too long for its purpose. Don't trade your cow in for it. --Keith Simanton
Description
FUN AND FANCY FREE, Walt Disney's 9th full-length animated masterpiece, is a delightful gem that not only sparkles with charm, but is unbelievably rich in history-making Disney moments. It was the last animated feature starring Walt Disney as the voice of Mickey Mouse, and the only film featuring all four of Walt Disney's most famous characters -- Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, and Jiminy Cricket. Following Disney's classic tradition of great storytelling, unforgettable characters, music, and adventure, FUN AND FANCY FREE is the joyful telling of BONGO and MICKEY & THE BEANSTALK, two timeless tales magically brought to life by the beloved Jiminy Cricket and the masterful combination of animation and live action. And now, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, FUN AND FANCY FREE has been beautifully restored so a whole new generation can experience the magic of Walt Disney's original theatrical vision -- for the very first time! One of Disney's happiest films ever, FUN AND FANCY FREE makes a valuable addition to your Disney video collection.
Customer Reviews:
Not one of Disney's Finest...........2007-05-30
I watched this DVD with a younger family member recently and found the first story "Bongo" way too long and such a product of the 1940's to be only of historical interest. The second story "Micky and the Beanstalk" is better though I admit I found famed ventriloquist, Edgar Bergen's, two puppets a little, er, unsettling. If you are intent on viewing or owning every Disney animated classic ever made go ahead and choose this but the average viewer is not missing much in skipping this one.
Excellent Product.......2007-05-18
Product was in perfect condition. My kids and I love it. It brings back a lot of fun memories.
Fun and Fancy Free.......2007-03-08
My son loves this DVD very much. He is only 2, I don't think he understands the whole stories, but he loves those characters.
Classic and charming DVD.......2006-12-06
When I ordered this I didn't exactly know what I was getting. I knew it had the classic "Mickey and the Beanstalk" that I had loved as a child, but I didn't know it was the edited version narrated by Edgar Bergen. I also didn't know about the other short feature "Bongo", narrated by Dinah Shore.
I admit I was a little put off at first, but this quickly became one of our very favorite movies. "Mickey and the Beanstalk" is presented as a story told by Edgar Bergen at Luana's birthday party with many silly interuptions by Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd. Jiminy Cricket chimes in occasionally too. On a child enjoyment level the character interaction at the party is excellent and really entertains children. The actual cartoon has really withstood the test of time. My daughter adores Mickey Mouse and she gets absorbed in the exploits of Mickey, Donald and Goofy as they take on the giant to rescue the magic harp. The giant is a particularly charming character. For adults this is like owning a little piece of cinematic history. You have the classic cartoon with classic characters as well as Edgar Bergen and his two famous "friends" Charlie and Mortimer. I take off one star because we don't love the Bongo cartoon.
A true gem restored.......2006-10-18
I loved this movie, particularly the Mickey and the beanstalk as it was originally done with Edgar Bergen. I hated the fact he was dropped in the TV version.
As a professional ventriloquist myself, I am slightly biased as I am a big Bergen fan. Even still, Mickey and the beanstalk was one of the funniest cartoon Disney ever did.
Bongo was cute but maybe too cute for my taste. I liked Dinah Shores narration. Don't forget she was a big star when this movie came out.
Get it and enjoy the fun!

Shortly after Dick Van Dyke played Bert in Mary Poppins, he starred as Lt. Robin Crusoe in this lesser known 1966 comedy, splendidly showcasing his myriad comedic talents in a South seas setting. Families who remember Van Dyke's riotous romp as Navy-pilot-turned-island-native will appreciate this digital release of the original film. The laughs begin from the moment Crusoe is marooned at sea on a military-issue rubber raft and fights off a shark while reading a step-by-step survival guide. By the time he washes ashore on the island, discovers the wonders of bamboo, and stumbles upon a poker-playing astro-Chimp, audiences are given over to the gigglefest. Nancy Kwan, as Wednesday, adds to the merriment as the island's other castaway who plays a humorous game of charades with Crusoe before revealing her status as an exile, having escaped her overprotective father. With the battle cry, "Women have rights too," Crusoe and Wednesday prepare for the inevitable patriarchal showdown, a madcap misadventure. While special features are sorely lacking--such as an interview with Van Dyke--this decent family flick remains a rich Disney relic. (Ages 4 and older) --Lynn Gibson
Description
Escape to an island full of castaway comedy as Disney favorite Dick Van Dyke and Nancy Kwan star in this hilarious South Pacific adventure. Lt. Robin Crusoe (Van Dyke) is an all-thumbs Navy pilot who ditches his plane after engine trouble. He survives a riotous raft ride only to find himself marooned on a lush tropical island with a poker-playing chimp, a gadget-rich abandoned sub, and Wednesday (Kwan) -- a wild but beautiful native girl in exile for disobeying her overprotective father. You won't stop laughing as all the natives get restless in this paradise of clowning and chaos.

I was 8 and now I still remember some of the scenes after 40 years. It was quite a fun movie and surely left a great impression on me.
Dick Van Dyke as Robin Crusoe.......2007-05-10
Another favorite from kid-hood, I have always been a big fan of D.V.D. (not just DVD) and this is one of my Favorites, this film probably couldn't be made in todays overly PC world, but its still a pretty funny movie if you watch it in the vien it which it is presented.
Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N. DVD.......2007-01-10
Great comedy!!!
The only bad part I found was the way they made all women seem a little stupid. I overall enjoyed this movie.
Mindless Fun.......2006-11-10
This is a typical 1960s Disney style movie that has good humor and is fun to watch.
Disney Classics Never Die!.......2006-02-22
My Dad used to own a video store when I was young, so we saw all of the Disney movies and owned tons of them. Lt. Robin Crusoe is one movie I loved to watch because of the chimp in it. So when it came out on DVD I just had to get it. My two girls are ages 5 and 3 and I didn't think they would like to watch it just yet but I was wrong. They love it! Even though they don't understand some of the humor, they still enjoy it. The movies that are being made today are getting worse and worse, with the exception of Disney's and very few others. The movies that were made 20 years ago are so much more decent and very enjoyable for the whole family. This movie is one of the great Disney classics that should belong in every home!!

Description
Mirror, mirror, on the wall who's the fairest storybook heroine of them all? Snow White! Sarah Patterson (The Company of Wolves) stars as the fabled slumbering beauty while Emmy winner* Diana Rigg ("The Avengers") serves up some "delicious comic villainy" (Variety) as the wicked stepmother who's consumed by vanity in this thrilling live-action adaptation of the classic Brothers Grimm tale. After her jealous stepmother (Rigg), the queen, tries to have her killed, Snow White (Patterson) runs away into the forest, where she finds refuge with seven kindly dwarves. But when thequeen discovers she's still alive, she decides to destroy her rival herself using clever disguises. Finally, a poisonous apple does the trickor so she thinks until the handsome prince arrives to save Snow White!
Customer Reviews:
wonderful Cannon MovieTale version.......2007-05-21
It's very rare to have a screen version of SNOW WHITE that tries to stay faithful to the original Grimm Brothers fairytale. This rendition, part of the fabulous Cannon MovieTales series, does tell the story with a faithful eye to the original material.
Young Snow White flees into the forest after her jealous stepmother the Queen (Diana Rigg) tries to have her killed. The girl finds a safe haven with seven dwarfs, but her life is threatened once more when the Queen discovers her hiding-place. After several thwarted attempts to kill her, the Queen conjures up a poisoned apple...
As in the original Grimm Brothers story, this version depicts the Queen in several disguises trying to kill Snow White, using a tight-fitting bodice, a poisoned Japanese hair-comb, and finally the poison apple.
Diana Rigg plays the evil Queen with relish. Nicola Stapleton plays little Snow White, with Sarah Patterson ("The Company of Wolves") playing the older incarnation.
The Cannon MovieTales series was filmed--rather economically--in Israel, where producers had access to a wide range of appropriate locations. Most of the films have now found their way to DVD (the series also includes "Hansel & Gretel", "Rumplestiltskin", "Sleeping Beauty", "The Frog Prince", "Red Riding Hood", and "Beauty & the Beast").
(Single-sided, single-layer disc).
snow white! much better than the disney version!.......2007-01-29
I have seen several version of the beloved fairytale and this has to be the best one i've seen. I enjoy the disney version but this one sticks to the origional grimm story. The queen gets snow white with the corset, the comb, and the apple. I also think the romance is more touching than the disney version and that is what i love about fairy tales. The songs are more catchy as well. I like "everyday","the one i long for",and "let it snow" I have seen this cannon movie tale and sleeping beauty and really enjoyed both and i recomend them to anyone who loves live action fairy tales or at all.
Grimm story reborn........2006-06-26
Brothers Grimm stories are far less cutesy than we think. This version is much closer to the original German story without being quite so grotesque. It is certainly closer (and in a way more interesting) than Walt Disney's version. I don't like the names for the dwarves (there Disney is at least more memorable). The Dwarves are very good, led by Billy Barty. Diana Rigg as the Queen must have loved doing this stuff. She is to the hilt and just shy of over the top. Delightful. The King is okay, the 1st queen not so hot. Young Snow White is just too precious, but the grown up heroine is very good. The songs are okay to very good. They aren't wonderful, but they don't jump out as awful either.
The Fairest One of All!.......2006-05-20
Legendary stars Billy Barty and Diana Rigg bring one of the world's most beloved fairy tales to life in the Cannon Movie Tale, "Snow White." Starring beautiful and charming Sarah Patterson (The Company of Wolves) in the title role as the princess who fled her wicked, jealous, and murderous stepmother's castle as a child, "Snow White" tells the tale of how the princess is taken in by seven kindly dwarfs living in a cottage in the forest. As the dwarfs go off to dig in their mines each day, Snow White cooks and keeps house for years, growing into a sweet and lovely young woman. But, as Snow White grows ever more beautiful, the evil queen grows ever more jealous. Consulting her magic mirror and book of spells for ways to terminate Snow White, the dwarfs must repeatedly undo her vicious magic. It seems the final spell is beyond even the dwarfs abilities to break though. Their only hope lies in a young prince who is returning home from a long journey still seeking a great discovery to satisfy the longing in his heart.
"Snow White" sits among the best of the nine wonderful Cannon Movie Tales, which are among the best live-action fairy tale films available to date. Sticking more closely to the original stories from the Brothers Grimm, "Snow White" and the other Cannon tales mix in simple but fun-filled songs with fantastic casts and writing that blends realism and fantasy seamlessly. "Snow White" features some of the best songs in the lot, and it's clear that Diana Rigg really has a ball with her villainous role. It's so terrific that these childhood favorites many of us remember from the Disney Channel's 1980's and early 90's glory are finally available on DVD (most of them at least). The DVDs include trailers (not sure if these films ran anywhere theatrically), and "Snow White" is the only one of the four that I currently own that is presented in a letterbox format (though not much of one). The Cannon Movie Tales are mostly family fun, though be warned that some can have their scary moments (for example, "Red Riding Hood," my favorite, is done as a werewolf story that at times may be a bit frightening). The other Cannon Movie Tales, all of which I highly recommend, are: Rumpelstiltskin, The Emperor's New Clothes, Red Riding Hood, Puss In Boots, Hansel and Gretel, Beauty and the Beast, The Frog Prince, and Sleeping Beauty. Those last two have not yet been released to DVD, and I have yet to see Rumpelstiltskin at any retail stores, though Amazon seems to carry it. I wish to get them all, but currently only own my favorites: Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Puss In Boots (starring Christopher Walken!), and Hansel and Gretel. Fairy tale fanatics should own all these films, and I also highly recommend my top favorites, the Disney animated versions. Also, for a scarier version of Snow White, pick up the outstanding, "Snow White: A Tale of Terror," starring the beautiful Monica Keena. More recommendations: Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre collection (also best known from the Disney Channel airings), Shrek and Shrek 2, The Slipper and the Rose (for a live-action Cinderella), Ever After (another live-action Cinderella), The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996), Peter Pan (2003), The Wizard of Oz, Return to Oz, and Rodger's and Hammerstein's Cinderella (1965) among others!
snow white.......2006-03-02
When i saw this version of Snow White, it became my vavorite. It brought this fairy tale to life better than I have ever seen,
it stayed with the Brothers Grimm story very well. I have also
seen their Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, and Rumplestltskin
all of these have been a favorite of mine.

Description
Fred Astaire becomes both the benefactor and suitor of Leslie Caron in this charming story of a playboy who falls under the spell of a beautiful French orphan. While traveling through France, Jervis Pendleton lll (Astaire) anonymously sponsors an 18-year-old girl named Julie (Caron), whom he sends to college in America. Two years later they finally meet face to face and start to fall in love. But complications arise and their happiness is threatened when Jervis embarks on a noble yet misguided attempt to do "the right thing" about their age difference. Featuring imaginative production numbers and a Johnny Mercer score that includes the 1955 Oscar® -nominated hit for Best Song "Something's Gotta Give", Daddy Long Legs is a song-filled blend of dance and fantasy for romantics of all ages.

Daddy Long Legs.......2007-03-24
I think this is one of Fred Astaire's best. A lot of people rave about "Top Hat," but I like his later movies better. His dancing is exceptional. The only problem I have with the film is it's another of the "teen age girl falls in love with old man" movies. That hasn't changed much over the years if you've seen any Clint Eastwood movies. Of course, I am an old man who would like to think it could happen to me.
Fred is a "stand-up, elegant" dancer compared with Gene Kelly who is a "squat low, gymnastics" dancer. Both are great. In this film, I think Leslie Caron was superb. She had an air of innocence which she portrayed very well and she is such a lovely dancer. I think she fits as a dance partner better with Fred that with Gene who is better suited with someone like Cyd Charisse.
I saw the movie when it first came out in 1955 and several times since. It has remained one of my favorites because of the music and dance routines more than the storyline. I would have purchased it earlier, but it wasn't digitized for DVD until 2005 and I didn't want the VHS version.
If you are a fan of musicals like I am, you will love this film.
A touch of Old Fashioned Charm.......2007-02-21
This is a Musical for the discerning. Someone who appreciates the way things 'use to be'. Mr Astaire executes with effortless elegance, grace and 100% charm.
A Youthful Leslie Caron almost flawlessly mirrors Mr. Astaire's natural effortlessness and makes you wish that you had enough talent to look so relaxed partnering a legendary entertainer.
If you enjoy the innocent/natural charisma of a bygone era with its genteel elegance....you cannot go past this classic!
On the downside [purely personal taste] I think that Miss Caron's 'fade to dream dance sequences' are too long and too numerous to hold my attention and don't add enough 'value' to the overall storyline.
Ultimately, Uncle Jervis is everyone woman's dream man [fully loaded, without the traditional 'drop dead/georgeous' skin deep covering...but what he lacks in 'looks' is outweighed by his endless charm, charisma and downright Godgiven talent! Delightful!
Delightful Golden Oldie.......2007-01-14
Daddy Longlegs is a wonderful movie showcasing the great dancing of both Fred Astaire and Leslis Caron. If you are a fan of either, this is a must-have. There's also some good extras on the DVD.

this was one my favorite movies growing up. it's classy, elegant, and charming. it was made when you didnt have to have any profanity, nudity, or violence to make a good movie.

Based on the book by Ève Curie, Madame Curie is a tender tribute to the two-time Nobel Prize winner (and first female recipient). Narrated by screenwriter James Hilton (Mrs. Miniver), the biopic begins in the 1890s while Marie Sklodowska (Oscar winner Greer Garson, Mrs. Miniver) is enrolled at the Sorbonne. She's a poor Polish exchange student with a passion for physics and chemistry. When he finds out about her precarious financial situation, a professor recommends her for a position with the "nervous and impatient" Dr. Pierre Curie (Walter Pidgeon, Garson's Miniver co-star) and his assistant David (Robert Walker, Strangers on a Train). Curie believes that "women and science are incompatible." Marie, who will graduate at the top of her class, quickly proves him wrong. Just as quickly, he falls in love with her and introduces her to his parents (Henry Travers and Dame May Whitty). An engagement leads to a wedding, which leads to a partnership, which leads to the discovery of radium. Tragedy will eventually divide the couple, but Marie refuses to let their work die. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy (Little Women), Madame Curie may be heavier on the romance than the science, but charm is in abundant supply. With her regal bearing and breathy British accent, Garson isn't the most obvious choice for the famed physicist, but she effectively conveys the "stubborn, eager" woman's fervor for her field-and for her husband. Margaret O'Brien (Meet Me in St. Louis) co-stars as future Nobel laureate Irene Curie. -- Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Perennial co-stars Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon followed their triumph in the Oscar-winning Mrs. Miniver, with this memorable biographical classic. Garson portrays the young Polish physics student Marie, who soon falls in love with and marries Dr. Pierre Curie (Walter Pidgeon), in whose lab she had worked. On their honeymoon they decide to investigate a strange effect Professor Becquerel (Reginald Owen) has noticed with the uranium/thorium stones for Marie's dissertation, and they determine there must be additional radioactive elements causing it. After years of experimentation in a makeshift lab at the University, they are finally able to isolate a few grains of a new element, radium, from 7 tons of raw material. Unfortunately, at the height of their success, tragedy strikes. The grand success of Madame Curie continued Garson's winning streak as one of the biggest box-office stars of the decade.

Customer Reviews:
Yet another great paring of Garson and Pidgeon.......2007-05-30
This bio-pic is the third paring of Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon and this demonstrates MGM's skill in developing first rate vehicles for its leading stars. Who would have thought that the discovery of radium would make for an exciting drama? This necessitates some fictionalization. There is no mention of Marie Curie's political involvement and concern for the fate of her native Poland. However Pidgeon and Garson are interesting to watch on the screen. Though appearing now somewhat tame, it is interesting to note that here is the story of a woman who not only has a career, but also wins two Nobel Prizes. Quite a departure from the usual woman's picture plot devices which generally revolve around marriage and children.
This film is a delight to watch, particularly for the chemistry between Pidgeon and Garson. While the science is somewhat suspect, it shows a woman effectively competing in a man's world.
Madame Curie.......2007-05-14
Madame Curie
An old classic with brilliant transfer to DVD. Cast and acting are top rate with a good storyline,
A true classic movie.......2007-05-12
Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon are at their best in this fine biography of a couple of great scientists. The true dedication of their lives despite the perils of ill circumstances was very inspiring and something from which modern movie makers could learn a lesson.
Great old Movie..........2007-03-26
I remember seeing this movie many many years ago. I looked and looked for it and was overjoyed when I found the DVD. Quality is perfect, delivery exceptional.
Science of Love.......2007-02-21
Madame Curie is part science part love story. Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon are teamed up again, and while Garson seems to carry the show (after all it is about Madame Curie)the story focuses upon a genuine love story between husband and wife. The search for radium and thew success is tempered by the death of Monsieur Curie on the day they are to be honored. It isn't the myhtical story of Edison played by Spencer Tracy but it is a movie that I'd recommend for working couples, and guys who can't build up the courage to ask a woman to marry him.
