Hailed by many critics as one of the best films of 1995, this finely tuned black comedy sparked a renewed interest in movies based on books by prolific crime novelist Elmore Leonard, whose trademark combination of tight plotting and sharp humor is perfectly captured here. After the success of Pulp Fiction, John Travolta continued his meteoric comeback as Chili Palmer, a Mob "mechanic" whose latest assignment takes him to Los Angeles, where his fascination with the movie business turns into a new career as a would-be movie producer. He pitches ideas with a sleazy producer (Gene Hackman) and a major star (Danny DeVito), and also finds time to deal with a vengeful Mobster (Dennis Farina) and assorted Hollywood types (including Renee Russo and Delroy Lindo) who all want their piece of a tempting show-biz pie. The plot unfolds with enticing precision, but it's really Elmore's snappy dialogue--and the performances that bring it to life--that make this one of the best comedies of the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2007-01-11

Too bad there were so many great actors in this movie. I watched it because I thought it was a comedy, which it was not. I can't say it was a black comedy either. Great cast, good acting, but the idea of the movie and the end product just doesn't make it. Watching the movie was a waste of time.

4 out of 5 stars getting better.......2007-01-04

This is a great movie, very very funyn, it makes you love and hate Mr Palmer al the way through the movie, too bad the sequel was a carbon copy of it. The dvd is all about the movie, no extra features, but a great price

4 out of 5 stars Moview Review.......2006-11-04

Hilariously clever plot which glides from gangsters to Hollywood. Dennis Farina is a standout in a perfectly casted film.

4 out of 5 stars Very original comedy.......2006-10-07

This movie was well thought out and is not one of those movies wear an actor uses a catch-phrase that he did in 10 other movies. However, the sequel (Be Cool), basicly re-hashes the same jokes in this movie, with a similar storyline.

5 out of 5 stars The best movie of the 90's.......2005-09-22

Word's can hardly desribe the genius film. It is without a doubt the peak of mystery, romance, action and pure cinematic brilliance!
The fantastic screenplay perfectly shows how equally amazing Elmore Leanord's book is to the movie. It is also, by far, John Travolta's best role ever, and without him the movie would be nothing. This film is perfect for everyone, the alluring plot, amazing acting, entertaining screenplay.
It is truly, a gem.

"Now you see it. You're amazed. You can't believe it. Your eyes open wider. It's horrible, but you can't look away. There's no chance for you. No escape. You're helpless, helpless. There's just one chance, if you can scream. Throw your arms across your eyes and scream, scream for your life!" And scream Fay Wray does most famously in this monster classic, one of the greatest adventure films of all time, which even in an era of computer-generated wizardry remains a marvel of stop-motion animation. Robert Armstrong stars as famed adventurer Carl Denham, who is leading a "crazy voyage" to a mysterious, uncharted island to photograph "something monstrous ... neither beast nor man." Also aboard is waif Ann Darrow (Fay Wray) and Bruce Cabot as big lug John Driscoll, the ship's first mate. King Kong's first half-hour is steady going, with engagingly corny dialogue ("Some big, hard-boiled egg gets a look at a pretty face and bang, he cracks up and goes sappy") and ominous portent that sets the stage for the horror to come. Once our heroes reach Skull Island, the movie comes to roaring, chest-thumping, T. rex-slamming, snake-throttling, pterodactyl-tearing, native-stomping life. King Kong was ranked by the American Film Institute as among the 50 best films of the 20th century. Kong making his last stand atop the Empire State Building is one of the movies' most indelible and iconic images. --Donald Liebenson

DVD features
Not surprisingly, the eighth wonder of the world's DVD treatment is nothing short of spectacular. The newly restored, digitally mastered print of the 1933 version of King Kong is sharp, well balanced, and given that this film is seventy years old, has very few scratches or blemishes. The restoration is nothing short of amazing. What may frustrate some is the audio. Though crystal clear, it is still in 2.0 Mono. The soundtrack on Kong is such an integral part of the film you really wished they could have pulled it out to at least 2.0 Surround; but this is a minor criticism. The bulk of the commentary track is by visual effects veterans Ray Harryhausen and Ken Ralston joyfully discussing the special effects of the film and discussing why King Kong is such a favorite and important film to the community of visual effects artists. Spliced between their commentaries are colorful and humorous anecdotes from director from Merian C. Cooper and Fay Wray. The two documentaries on disc two run over three and half hours long. I Am Kong! The Exploits of Merian C. Cooper is an engaging documentary on the renegade, Hemingway-like director. It is fascinating to learn that Cooper was every bit the adventurer that the fictional director Carl Denham in King Kong was in the film. RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong, Eighth Wonder of the World is a two and a half hour documentary broken into 7 parts: "The Origins of King Kong," "Willis O'Brien and Creation," "Cameras Roll on Kong," "The Eighth Wonder," "A Milestone in Visual Effects," "Passion, Sound and Fury," "The Mystery of the Lost Spider Pit Sequence," and "King Kong's Legacy." Also included is complete footage of the legendary "The Lost Spider Pit Sequence." Presenting the segments are various film historians and filmmakers including Rudy Behlmer, Cooper biographer Mark Cotta Vaz, the Chiodo Brothers (of Team America: World Police special effects fame), and directors John Landis and Peter Jackson. Here you will learn everything you would ever want to know about the making and importance of King Kong, including that the producer/director team of Cooper and Schoedsack played the pilots who shoot Kong off the Empire State Building. The highly anticipated, long-awaited release of King Kong will meet most viewers' expectations, and exceed everyone's else. --Rob Bracco

3 out of 5 stars Jackson does it better.......2007-06-06

I've watched this film 3 times in the past 7 months & I don't care what a lot of people or a few blind critics say: this is NOT on any level better than Peter Jackson's `05 version. Don't get me wrong, this version is good & deserves credit for moving film into a new age but Jackson's remake makes this one look old. Carl Denham is the only character who even APPROACHES a real 3-dimensional person status. Wray's Ann is likeable enough, but seriouisly, is she anymore than a brainless piece of eyecandy found in any horror movie? She certainly doesn't posses the depth (and more importantly the heartache) that Watts' Ann has. This movie lacked everything it needed to rise above the level of an unscary horror movie (fleshed-out characters, a relationship between Ann & Kong & an epic feel in both scope & soundtrack.) Sorry movie fans, but no matter what you think, Cooper may have had the epic idea but Jackson made it an epic reality.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Awesome Thriller Of All Time!.......2007-03-22

PLOT: The film begins in New York City in 1933, during the bottom of the Great Depression. Filmmaker Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) has charted a freighter boat called Venture to take him to a filming location somewhere in the Indian Ocean. Denham is most well-known for making adventure films in exotic locations. He is keeping many of the details about the trip very secret. His backing studio announces that they refuse to get him a leading lady for his film without more details about the film itself, so Denham goes out to find a girl on his own. On the streets, Denham finds a poor, starving girl (Fay Wray) caught trying to steal an apple. The girl is very beautiful and Denham just knows that she is right for the part. He buys the girl a meal and introduces himself to her. Her name is Ann Darrow and she happens to have some acting experience. He offers her the film role and the chance of a lifetime. Ann is apprehensive at first, but finally agrees to it. Denham and his film crew finally set sail on the Venture. For weeks they sail towards Indonesia; Denham promises to tell Captain Englehorn (Frank Reicher) their true destination once they get close enough. The first mate, Jack Driscoll (Bruce Cabot), is a real tough guy who feels that the ship is no place for women, but he soon finds himself falling in love with Ann. Denham finally tells Englehorn that they are sailing towards a place called Skull Island. It is only charted on a map which was sold to him by a Norwegian captain in Singapore; the location of the island was given to the captain by a native who was swept out to sea. Denham tells eveyone that there is a wall on the island that is so large and so old that the natives there don't even remember who built it. Apparently it was built to keep something out from the other side; legend says that it is a monstrous creatures simply known as "Kong". The ship eventually enters through a thick fog which hides the island on the other side. The film crew comes to shore on the island's penninsula, which is the only place on the island not surrounded by rock. They begin to spy on some natives who are having some sort of ritual. Many of the men are dancing around dressed as gorillas and yelling, "Kong! Kong!" The natives are also adorning a young girl with flowers and jewelry. The native chief spots the film crew, so they decide to show themselves. Engelhorn is able to understand the native language and acts as an interpreter for both groups. When asked what they are doing, the chief explains that they are offering a wife to their god Kong. Suddenly the chief gets a look at Ann, whom he thinks is a much better choice for Kong's bride than their own native bride. He offers the film crew six native girls in exchange for Ann, but they refuse. The chief becomes angry and tells them to leave. Later that night on the Venture, Jack and Ann openly express their love for one another. Jack is called to the bridge and Ann is left alone. Suddenly, Ann is kidnapped by a group of natives that canoed to the Venture. The crew later find a native bracelet on the deck and realize that Ann was kidnapped. Back on the island, the natives open up the gate at the wall and leave Ann on the other side. They hit a large gong to summon the mighty Kong. Kong finally emerges from out of the jungle and reveals himself to be a giant gorilla. He grabs ahold of Ann and proceeds back into the jungle. The film crew then get to the wall and take control of it from the natives. A small group of them decide to go off into the jungle and rescue Ann. What they don't realize is that they are about to enter a world filled with prehistoric beasts which were thought to be extinct long ago.

COMMENTS: King Kong has to be one of the greatest films of all time. It's astounding special effects must have blown the 1933 audiences away. Despite the fact that it was made during the Great Depression, it still attracted a huge audience. Unlike other horror films at the time, it was not based on a novel; it was a pure invention of hollywood. It was the first hit film to feature a life-like animated central character in any form, thanks to stop-motion master Willis O'Brien. Kong was created through the use of two stop-motion puppets (an 18" and a 24"), a life-size mechanical bust for Kong's close-ups, and a life-size mechanical arm for close-ups of Kong holding Ann in the palm of his hand. The combination proved to be extremely effective. O'Brien had previously used his stop-motion techniques to create the dinosaurs in The Lost World (1925). Next, he was hired to create the dinosaurs for the film Creation (1931), but the film was never finished. Many of the dinosaurs from the production were later used for King Kong. Many of the scenes in this one film alone are considered to be some of the most memorable in cinematic history, especially the scene of Kong atop the Empire State Building as airplanes are shooting at him. King Kong ultimately spawned several sequels, spin-offs, remakes, and rip-offs. Since the film was such a huge hit, RKO Pictures quickly filmed and released a sequel, Son of Kong, that same year. The premise of that film was that Carl Denham returns to Skull Island and discovers that Kong had an albino son. In 1949, a spin-off called Mighty Joe Young was released. This film told the story of a young girl named Jill Young who adopts a baby gorilla whom she names Joe. Joe later grows to a very large size (not as large as Kong, but larger than an average gorilla.) Joe is later brought to the U.S. to be the star of a Hollywood nightclub act. Joe was also created via stop-motion by Willis O'Brien. The film was later remade by Walt Disney Pictures in 1998. In 1962, the Japanese-based Toho Studios, who had created the giant radioactive monster Godzilla, obtained the rights to make a King Kong film. They decided to place Kong against their own creation Godzilla in the classic monster movie showdown King Kong vs. Godzilla. The film served as both a sequel to Son of Kong and Godzilla Raids Again (1955). This was the first movie where both of the monsters were seen in color. Rather than using stop-motion animation, Kong was brought to life using the popular Japanese form of suitmation known as "kaiju". Many Kong fans noticed that Kong is much larger in this film than in the original 1933 film. This was because Godzilla was actually much larger than the 1933 King Kong. Toho Studios decided to scale Kong up to Godzilla's size to make the fight more fair. The film's explanation for this was that Kong ate berries which contained growth hormones. Kong next appeared in the Toho produced King Kong Escapes (1967), which pitted Kong against Mechani-Kong (a robot version of himself). In 1976, Italian film mogul Dino De Laurentiis decided to produce a big budget remake of King Kong. Kong was brought to life through suitmation. The detailed suit was created by special make-up effects master Rick Baker (who also actually played Kong). The film had several major changes from the original film. It received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, but depite all that it was commericially successful. The De Laurentiis remake was followed by a sequel, King Kong Lives, in 1986. The film was a commercial flop and is regarded by fans as the "worst King Kong movie of all time." King Kong was remade again in 2005 by New Zealand director Peter Jackson, who also directed the highly succussful Lord Of The Rings (2001 - 2003). Jackson stated that the original film was what inspired him to be a film director. This time, Kong was created through a highly evolved CGI process in which sensors are placed all over an actor's body to create the movements. The actor picked to portray Kong through this process was Andy Serkis, who also portrayed the CGI-created character Gollum in the Lord Of The Rings films. The film was extremely faithful to the original and it became a mega-hit. This DVD presents the film in its original full screen ratio. The footage and audio have been completely digitally remastered. The 2-disc set also contains "I'm Kong: The Exploits of Merian C. Cooper" -- 2005 documentary, Merian C. Cooper Movies trailer gallery, RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong, Eighth Wonder of the World - 7 Part Documentary, Creation test footage with commentary by Ray Harryhausen, and commentary by Ray Harryhausen and Ken Ralston, with interpolated interview excerpts of Merian C. Cooper and Fay Wray.

5 out of 5 stars You can't beat the original........2007-02-10

On time. As advertised. Can't beat that. Better in every was than the latest released version. Original story line more credible, and Fay Wray was far prettier than the recent lass.

The "new" version seems banal and vulgar.

5 out of 5 stars Coolest old movie EVER!!!.......2006-12-05

I really love old movies, but this is definitely my favorite. This is the kind of movie that surround sound was made for. Even though it's black and white, it's so easy to picture everything in color. King Kong beats the tar out of Godzilla! All the screaming got a little annoying after a while, but that's just about my only complaint. Peter Jackson completely messed up when he tried to re-remake it.
KING KONG RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars way better then the other 2.......2006-11-30

5 out of 5 stars Makes Me Wanna Dance !!.......2007-06-09

I rented this DVD on a whim... and was BLOWN AWAY !!

I like to think of myself as a bit of a musicologist, from Chicago blues to Stax R&B to that unique amalgam of styles called N'orleans jazz. The performances on this DVD concert-documentary are nothing short of stellar. The Joint is Jumpin'!!

The documentary sections will remind the viewer of the critical importance of New Orleans in the history of American music. It will also demonstrate that the heart and soul of NOLA is still alive (if not entirely well) in the aftermath of Katrina.

This DVD is a party on-film... Rent it, buy it, DIG IT !!

Based on a story by Damon Runyon, this Frank Capra film was nominated for several Oscars® after it was released in 1933 (it was remade by Capra as Pocketful of Miracles in 1961). A tenderhearted Depression-era comedy, it tells the story of Apple Annie (May Robson), a panhandling street vendor who has kept her real identity hidden from a daughter being reared in Europe. When the grown-up daughter comes to New York for a visit, Annie turns to gambler Dave the Dude (Warren William) for help. He transforms her--temporarily--into a high-society grande dame, but not without complications. The film is nearly stolen by Guy Kibbee, as a judge posing as Annie's husband, but Warren William, a John Barrymore lookalike, and dour Ned Sparks get laughs too. --Marshall Fine

Description

A Cinderella fairy tale set in the early 1930s, Lady for a Day is a delightfully charming mix of drama and comedy that earned four Academy Award nominations and propelled Frank Capra to the top ranks of popular filmmakers. Based on a Damon Runyon short story, Lady for a Day tells the tale of Apple Annie, a cantankerous New York City fruit peddler who has been pretending to be a high-society matron in letters to her daughter. When her daughter comes to visit with her aristocratic fiance, Apple Annie enlists her seedy gangster friends, who hilariously transform her into the grandest of dames!

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-06-29

I seen this on TCM and thought i would buy it. I got to say that when i seen it on TV it looked better then it did from the DVD. Not a very high qualty dvd it is more like a dvd disk for your cpu.

4 out of 5 stars The Dude.......2006-10-11

I know it's a stretch, but I can't help but think that the Coen Bros. knew this film well, when they wrote, "The Big Lebowski".

Both "dudes" share a disdain for the establishment, and yet are well respected by their peers. Both men attempt a good deed, but not without the prospect of a payout at it's completion. Both appear to be the most astute within their respective circles, and seem to be drawn into a larger episode against their will.

It seems that the constuction of "The Big Lebowski" in it's relationship to "Lady for a Day", is similar to the construction of "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou", in it's relationship to "The Odyssey". There is a basic premise from which a very enjoyable romp ensues.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful surprise.......2006-07-12

This is the most wonderful movie with nobody I ever heard of except for the director, Frank Capra. May Robson is just fabulous -- tugs at your heartstrings, makes you cry and laugh. This is surely one of Capra's best movies -- not over the top or overly sentimental. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a two-hour smile.

4 out of 5 stars a too rarely seen depression-era goody.......2006-05-04

this is the original version of frank capras better-remembered "pocketful of miracles", about a bag lady who has been sending her child to convent school in europe and is now faced with the prospect of her grown daughter coming to visit her supposedly grande dame mother in new york. the latter movie filled in alot of detail, but softened the sting of the depression-era original. i like both, but this is the better one.

4 out of 5 stars All For One.......2006-04-03

Lady For a Day is about a woman named Apple Annie (May Robson). She has an illigitimate daughter who lives overseas; her daughter believes she is wealthy and married, which is okay because she will never find out. However, Annie's daughter wants to get married to a high-class man from Spain whose family wants to meet hers before they are wed. Annie is in a terrible spot and plans to fake her own death until she is able to win the support of several in her community to impersonate her wealthy alter ego.

Robson is great in her part, a sympathetic and dynamic character whose emotions ring absolutely true throughout. Guy Kibbee plays a unique role as an intelligent man who displays class and wit, unlike his standard drunken parts. Warren William also plays against type as a charitable man. Glenda Farrell has a small, forgettable part, but she looks more beautiful than ever.

This film displays the uplifting spirit that Capra's films became known for, a symbol of a by-gone era, one that many will not let themselves forget.

With its spectacular sweep of earthly treasures--the peak of Mt. Everest, a lush valley in the Western U.S., a whirl of land and sky as seen from the cockpit of an aerobatic flyer--America's Heart and Soul is an unusual Disney documentary visually grand yet thematically intimate, focusing on two dozen people from around the country who have found purpose through their passionate endeavors. First-time director Louis Schwartzberg embraces the soulful, gritty, sometimes painful cost of American freedom in the stories of cowboy Roudy Roudebush, a recovering alcoholic; Marc and Ann Savoy, Cajun musicians whose family has lived on the same Louisiana land for seven generations; and California dancer-mountainside rappeller Amelia Rudolph, who choreographs eccentric performances below the cliffs at Muir Beach. Chapters about ex-con Michael Bennett, who survived prison to become the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team captain, and the Reverend Cecil Williams, founder of a truly inclusive church in San Francisco, are particularly inspiring. --Tom Keogh

Description

From sea to shining sea, from amber waves of grain to purple mountain majesties, it's not merely the land that makes America beautiful -- it's her people. Captured with stunning cinematography, AMERICA'S HEART & SOUL takes you on a journey that weaves across this great nation, revealing a rich tapestry of ordinary people living extraordinary lives as they follow their dreams with the freedom of spirit that's uniquely American. From the Vermont dairy farmer, to the blind mountain climber, to the father and son marathon runners, their inspiring stories are as different as can be -- passionate, colorful, courageous, funny, touching. Featuring an exclusive new song by John Mellencamp, "The World Don't Bother Me None," AMERICA'S HEART & SOUL is a gloriously joyous celebration of being an American.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars America has Heart and Soul.......2007-03-19

This is such a lovely documentary it should have received much more attention. It was somehow, incorrectly, reviewed as a backlash to Michael Moore's movie because it came out at a similar time. This is not a political movie and it has nothing to do with the events of 9-11. In fact, all of the movie was shot before 9-11 occurred. It was not released earlier because of the extensive editing and because a distributor had not yet picked it up. I would recommend this delightful look at passions and businesses of everyday people across America.

5 out of 5 stars AMERICA'S HEART AND SOUL.......2007-03-09

America's Heart and Soul is a wonderful documentary of true Americana. It renews our love of country and the people who inhabit it. It lifts our spirits and gives us to realize that no matter the bad times we go through, there are more than enough good times and places and people to constantly restore our souls. We are taken from sea to shining sea to meet the people who reach for the stars and push the envelopes. From the Vermont farmer and his son to the soul singer/musicians in New Orleans and the oil fire fighters in Texas, we get a wonderful glimpse of the folks who prove day after day that America is still the land of the free and the home of the brave and that those who have dreams can see them come true, no matter the odds. It speaks to the heart and gives us pause. It entices us to rekindle our own dreams and realize what is really important in this life. And most of all, it makes us realize that America is still the greatest land of all. I recommend it for children and adults alike. A wonderful gift to bestow on friends and family. Great cinematography, a fantastic experience that will bring tears to the eye and laughter to the heart. I cannot praise it enough. Wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational and Wonderful.......2007-01-15

I happened to meet Dan Klennert in Elbe Washington, who is featured on this book and video. I was inspired and awed by his works. Disney has done an unbelievable job of finding unique, interesting and inspirational people throughout the United States. This book and video will just make you feel good.

5 out of 5 stars America's Heart & Soul.......2006-11-12

The absolute best documentary about the vast differences in America from the language of New Orleans to the language of the mountain people in NC, and the wild, wild, west. This footage ofers places unseen by many including those who done extensive traveling. After seeing the beauty, color, and richness of the people within the greatess nation on God's green earth, the film leaves you with laughs, tears, and joy. You feel proud to be an american: part of such a great group of people. Another good thing about this film is for those who enjoy traveling, this will stir you up, make you excited, and ease your worries about staying inside the U.S. to travel because after you see the wonderful colors of mountains, streams, the praire, cowboys ridin the fences like they did a 100 years ago, the big cities and everything in between you'll be amazed that you are not making some travel plans to go see some of these places for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Feel good about being an American living in the USA.......2006-04-22

This is the kind of feel-good documentary that will leave you teary-eyed and longing for more human connection. The exquisite cinematography, and lilting, moving soundtrack, capture the essence of America and its people, be it those living in "Small Town USA," the "burbs," or on some rich, cultural urban island. The common thread is humanity, a shared sense of identity, history, goal-oriented struggle, family, and an unwavering optimism and hope for the future. Buy a copy for everyone you love or, better yet, gather all around the TV and watch it together. It was just what my husband and I needed one night to renew our faith in all that is uniquely American - our blended culture, our loyalty to God, country and family, our ties to our land and heritage, our rugged individualism, and our never-say-die dogged determination. This could bring flag waving and the Pledge of Allegiance back into style...

5 out of 5 stars King Kong (1933).......2007-06-20

Warner Home Entertainment has surpassed itself with this painstaking restoration of the 1933 adventure/horror classic. The movie has not looked this good in my lifetime, which only reinforces how well "Kong" stands up as entertainment after over seventy years. The groundbreaking stop-motion effects work of Willis O'Brien are on full display, and while the acting style is decidedly pre-Method, the story enthralls, and the picture moves briskly along to that immortal climax atop the Empire State Building. An early sound masterpiece from directors Merian C. Cooper (who also helped originate the story) and Ernest B. Schoedsack. This still outshines both re-makes.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Adventure film ever made! by Ian C., 12-year old filmmaker.......2007-04-12

King Kong is one of those films that is just excellent in every sense of the word. Warner Home Video finally (it was definitely worth it, though) released this film on a DVD (luckily it is packed with special features). By the way Automated Message "estrusone" how can you not comphrend this masterpiece (oh wait, this is the guy who gave "Citizen Kane", "The African Queen", "Jaws", "Shawshank Redemption", "A Clockwork Orange", "Taxi Driver" and "Apocalypse Now" 1 star, but then he gave that stupid goddamn racing movie "Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift" 5 stars). Anway, to end this review the film is great (oh, and Automated Message "estrusone" you know where you can put "Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift"? And if you're not man enough to do it, I'd be happy to oblige).

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTY AND THE BEAST..........2006-12-21

As a young child in the nineteen fifties, I used to watch this film whenever it appeared on TV on "Million Dollar Movie". I loved it then. I love it now. Time has not diminished the capacity of this film to mesmerize and hold the viewer in its thrall.

The story line is basic. Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong), a filmmaker and entrepreneur, leads an expedition to Skull Island where he discovers its deep, dark secret. It is a land where time has stood still, and prehistoric monsters still hold sway over the island and its inhabitants. There, the natives pay homage to the one whom they revere as "Kong", and who is, indeed, king of the island.

Denham, together with his beautiful, budding starlet, Ann Darrow (Fay Wray), as well as with the crew of the ship that brought him to Skull Island, investigates the strange ritual being performed on the island by its native population. Before she knows it, Ann finds herself captured by the natives. She is to become the bride of the mysterious "Kong".

When Ann discovers who the mysterious "Kong" is, she starts screaming and doesn't stop. The ship's first mate, Jack Driscoll (Bruce Cabot), who happens to be in love with Ann, manages to rescue her from the clutches of "Kong". Notwithstanding the fact that "Kong" has taken a shine to her, Ann is relieved to have been rescued by the man whom she loves.

Denham then arranges to capture the creature, whom he calls "King Kong" and takes him back to New York with them on the ship that brought them to Skull Island. There, King Kong makes his debut, one that movie lovers will long remember.

The special effects of this film were superlative for its time and still pass muster today. The relationship between the beauty and the beast still makes the viewer sit up and take notice. This is an attention grabbing film that is as exciting today, as when it was first released over seventy years ago. It is a truly timeless, cinema classic. Bravo!

1 out of 5 stars Raising more questions than it answers.......2006-12-16

Am I supposed to believe that this big honking gorilla wants to have sex with something that could easily fit up his rectum? OK, so maybe he's more than a one-night stand, but still, is he out of his pea-brain? I mean, you ever see a mouse run by in the kitchen and go grabbing after it because you wanted to rescue it from its loveless plight? Do you not think I know that I've just asked three questions in a row? Far more interesting, but never addressed by the director, is how King Kong got to be so big. Did this island belong to Dr. Moreau or was it Jurassic Park? Was he buddies with Godzilla? Did he give pointers to the Hulk? Could he dance with a Sentinel? And what, exactly is the joke I missed that has Kong wearing such a sh**-kicking grin in all of his scenes?

5 out of 5 stars Be VERY Careful.......2006-04-02

The image on the "Collector's Edition" page is that of the deluxe "King Kong Collection," which contains Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young in addition to the two-disk KK in the collector's tin. Conversely, the King Kong Collection's image is that of the Collector's Edition--Amazon is responsible for a rather sloppy reversal of images.
I highly recommend going the extra mile for the Collection, which was formerly available only through BestBuy, and which contains extra art work in addition to the two extra films and the tin, all packaged in the box shown (I'm a sucker for special editons). If you're budget-minded, the films are available as a plain-vanilla box that's also available on Amazon.
No need to elaborate on the films themselves except to mention that I love them all, the prints look great, and the extras, including the commentaries, are super. I don't think the Collection is available at BestBuy anymore, so grab it while you can now that it's available through Amazon--it's a keeper. Just make sure you order the right one, else you'll be returning it as "not as pictured."

2 out of 5 stars A Freakish Journey.......2002-09-17

I gave this film a rating of two out of five stars. I think the idea of a circus sideshow, complete with grotesque freaks is a terribly wonderful idea. Although there are fewer and fewer traveling circus' displaying freaks these days, the topic is wide open for horror interpretations. I enjoyed a couple of the characters, but thought that overall this film could have been given a little more life with better writing and directing. This film should have had a grittier atmosphere and more gore. For a superior film about traveling circuses, I would recommend Something Wicked This Way Comes. I gave this film two stars out out five, although ti was somewhat closer too a 1.5 on a five star scale. If you can rent it, as for buying it...thats up to you.

5 out of 5 stars Good film deserves more of a chance.......2001-04-15

I do not understand all the negative reviews this film is getting. Sure, it is by no means one of the greatest films ever made, but it does have some redeeming qualities. As others have noted, Phil Fondacaro's performance is good. Another performance that shouldn't be overlooked is that of Scott Clark, who played Grant, the boy in the wheelchair. I really identified with the character he played, perhaps because I am also in a wheelchair. This movie deserves your look.

Although D.W. Griffith was best known for directing serious epics with a social conscience, the master of silent cinema was no slouch when it came to heartwarming comedies. Griffith's 1925 feature Sally of the Sawdust is further distinguished by its starring role for comedian W.C. Fields, reprising a role he originated on stage in Dorothy Donnelly's play Poppy. Fields had been firmly established in vaudeville as a gifted comedian and juggler, and those skills are readily apparent in this sweet-natured story about a young circus waif named Sally (latter-day Griffith ingenue Carol Dempster). Sally's mother was rejected by her wealthy father for marrying into show business, then died during childbirth, leaving Sally to be raised by lovable circus performer and con artist J. Eustace McGargle (Fields). Destiny eventually brings Sally back to the luxurious home of her grandparents, who remain unaware that she is family. Legal hassles erupt when McGargle is accused of fraud, and matters are further complicated when a local socialite falls for Sally's considerable charms. Only the truth of Sally's lineage can save her and McGargle from jail, and Griffith milks this amusing melodrama for all it's worth. Propelled by a wonderful piano score adapted from the film's original 1925 cue sheets and performed by Philip Carli, this delightful silent has been faithfully preserved and remains highly entertaining. It's fascinating as W.C. Fields's first screen success (he later remade this film as Poppy in 1936), and the little-known Dempster proves to be a charming comedienne in her own right. The DVD transfer is remarkably pristine, retaining the tinting of the film's original release. --Jeff Shannon

Description

In a fascinating departure from the austere moral drama in which he specialized, D.W. Griffith demonstrates his talent for warm-hearted comedy with "Sally of the Sawdust." Fresh from the Ziegfeld Follies, W.C. Fields made his second screen appearance as Professor Eustace McGargle in a rare silent screen role showcasing the comic juggling and dry wit that would make him a legend.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entertaining and enjoyable .......2007-04-24

Next to "Battle of the Sexes" this charming silent film surely rates as a superb example of legendary director D.W. Griffith's versatility and skill. While probably best remembered for his serious historic and moral epics of earlier years, Griffith kept up with the times and directed a variety of other films in the mid to late 1920s, of which "Sally of the Sawdust" stands out as one of the best. With outstanding stars such as W.C. Fields perfectly cast in the colourful character of Professor McGargle, and Carol Dempster as Sally, who replaced Griffith's earlier `stock' actresses such as Mary Pickford, Lillian Gish and Mae Marsh, this film shines and is entertaining and enjoyable every single minute. Carol Dempster, who only appeared in over a dozen films and mostly under Griffith's direction, plays the part of Sally wonderfully and brings the character and whole story to life as she leaps spritely from scene to scene as the circus orphan who is devoted to her guardian and her `Pop', Professor McGargle. But unknown to her, she has living grandparents who are also unaware of her existence, which makes for considerable emotional suspense and also sentimentality as the plot unwinds. This busy story was in fact a popular stage play called "Poppy" in which W.C. Fields played the same role of Professor McGargle, and whose screen appearance in this film led to further future successful screen roles. Griffith often demonstrated his skill in building suspense and action in his films, and "Sally of the Sawdust" is no exception as Sally waits for her Pop to evade a gang of thieves and finally arrive in court to tell the stern judge - who is in fact Sally's grandfather - who her mother was so that she wouldn't be sent to a home for wayward girls. There are delightful moments of comedy as well as action and drama, all without the intensity and heaviness often characteristic of Griffith's earlier dramatic sagas. Together with very good and clear picture quality and a perfectly suited piano score based on original cue sheets, this Kino Video production is high quality all-round, and shows Griffith and his stars at their best.

5 out of 5 stars Poppy is a must see!.......2001-06-25

The 1936 version, entitled 'Poppy', as was the original play, is a must see, hilarious film! Got to agree with the other reviewer, it contains some classic Fields scenes... how about the croquet game, or the get-away on the mayor's horse... or the scene where Poppy announces that she is indeed the heiress... to which Fields replies, "Well my dear, I'm glad to see you've finally come around"!.. or the toothless guy who spends the entire movies chasing the $5 Fields has bilked him out of in the first 5 minutes!

Please, please, please WHOEVER put the 1936 Poppy on a DVD!

4 out of 5 stars A "must" for Fields fans.......2000-02-13

A sentimental comedy with an inevitable happy ending but still good fun. Carol Dempster does a convincing job as a free spirited circus girl, Sally, brought up by McGargle (Fields, of course)after the death of her parents. The silent Fields shows his physical comedy skills, which are often forgotten due the later strength of his spoken comedy. The quality of the picture is excellent - again showing for me that B & W movies gain most from DVD if the manufacturers make an effort. A good movie for anyone to watch, it is a must for the Fields fans to see the earlier stages of the character that was to become so familiar in the later films.

5 out of 5 stars Original Fields at his best in the role he was born to play!.......1999-10-30

Quality of the DVD; The picture quality was great, and was taken from an obviously well restored print. Sound was excellent as well, (although this is a silent movie). I have seen very good silent movies with terrible sound tracks of ill fitting music, but with this movie they used the original sheet music that was made for it, with delightful results. This is a silent movie, but if you are a Fields fan, you will not want to miss this one. The movie captures the essence of all of Fields' future movies, utilizing the formula of where he is the down trodden father with the loving and devoted daughter and they see it through with each other's help and find the golden lining of the grey clouds. You even get a peek at some of Fields' juggling. Best viewing wishes, Dave
