Dead End is no dead end........2007-05-27

I really enjoyed this flick. It very deftly combined comedy with horror, which is no easy task. I was totally caught off guard by the humor. Most horror movies either have no humor, or the humor is poorly executed. I expected the same here, until I found myself busting out laughing at several scenes. The "do you have to suck on the bottle like that?" line starting things rolling and there were several others that elicited more than just a chuckle.
But a horror movie's main task is to frighten and scare you. This does that as well. Driving down a deserted road late at night makes for a nice setting. And as the events start happening to this family you can't help but feel their despair. Another thing I like is how they slowly start breaking down psychologically and turn on each other (some of the funniest lines come out here). And then you get the ending, which didn't turn me off like it did so many others.
Overall an enjoyable ride that I'd gladly take again and again.

If you are familiar with Lionsgate, a film company with a bad track record, you won't be suprised by my next words: this film is crap. The only highlight of it was at the end where Steve Valentine makes an appearance, though it's only for about seven minutes or so. Don't waste your time on this. Life is too short.

I watched this movie with my older sister, her boyfriend and her friend, and I can tell you, we had a fun time watching the movie! There were so many scary parts that made shivers run down our spines, that made us scream and that made us cover our eyes!

There were many scary parts, such as the part where Marian's brother and the lady in white started kissing and a very gross part happened, when the mother started going insane with the gun, the part where the father and daughter are in the forest, the shadows around the car and the baby's face were just some of many different scary parts in this movie.

I absolutely had an amazing time watching this movie. It had it's touch of comedy, which was fun, and the ending was (in my opinion) very good. Some may say this movie wasn't good, but it is definitely worth a try!

Real Christmas horror flick.......2006-11-28

This movie is a Christmas eve horror flick. If you would like to be scared by a movie that holds your interests, then this is the one. Why this movie is so scarey to me is that I have been lost when driving late at night. So, what the movie does is captures your fear of being lost with no one around to ask directions from. Great movie for a very low budget!!! Highly recommended!!!!

Don't bother.......2006-06-24

I just watched this with a friend and it's just sad. Just before Brent died things were getting bad on tour. And after Brent died, there is not one Dead show that it worth viewing or listening too. I would have thought they would have put out something better than this as their next release after the Buffalo shows which were pretty good. They have SO many hours and hours of Great footage and music. Why they chose this is beyond me. If you are a true die hard Dead Head, don't bother buying this one. All around... just bad. I would encourage you to write to them and ask for better stuff. Great footage is around from late 70's to early 90's. Let's get it out there!

This video may be worth renting, once. I saw shows on the 1995 summer tour, and it was just sad. Their were very few positive things happening, and SO MANY bad things happening. If you REALLY need to see that, watch this video. (If you're looking for Band Shots/Concert Footage - don't bother.) Don't expect much in the way of cinematography. This is NOT a high-quality Montery Video release. This is someone who had alot of parking lot video cam footage cashing in on it.

Disappointed.......2005-09-12

I thought this was going to be more of a "chat with the band *AND* fans" kinda thing, but it's mostly just film of the parking lot parties before the Dead shows. I came to the Dead late (about 2002) as a fan, so maybe I just don't get it (and I'm completely anti-drug). It could be that this film is just for those who actually were there and this is like a filmed class reunion.

The summer tour that this film captures was filled with many problems. I saw shows during this tour and unfortunately, there were harmful elements that I witnessed that had encroached into the community that followed the Grateful Dead. I commend the filmmaker for showing an honest perspective without sanitizing the negatives. I appreciated that the film also avoided sensationalizing events such as when unruly fans crashed through the fence at Deer Creek Amphitheatre. This could have been easily exploited with a drawn out examination for dramatic effect but instead it lasted less than two minutes. In the next scene, the film presents a very inspiring sequence where older Deadheads take accountability for not properly educating the new generation of fans. The determination of those interviewed to confront the problems on tour was very uplifting. Tragically, their vision was never realized as life following the Grateful Dead ended with Jerry's untimely death. Without a doubt, the closing scenes of fans gathered to celebrate Jerry's life makes this film worth purchasing. I highly recommend this film not only for Deadheads but more importantly for younger fans who have adopted the nomadic lifestyle of following the next generation of bands. There are lessons in this film to be learned, gathered and passed on.

like bad home movie footage.......2005-08-18

I was eagerly anticipating this one but was left sorely disappointed. I give it two stars, just because seeing the remaining band members give speeches at funeral/celebration was interesting. But really, the first hour of this documentary is pretty bad. It's shot with a cam corder, albeit a decent one, and it's essentially a series of interviews with heads in the parking lot. All the cliches are there... the tiedye shirtmaker, the people who haven't showered since god knows when... don't get me wrong, I'm a huge head myself, but this wasn't worth watching. The time period was 3 months before Jerry's death until his death. But there's no footage of the band playing. None. I guess that's what I wanted most, not home movies of parking lot interviews. Even a little concert footage would have gone a long way. Sorry, my two cents. I absolutely loved "Downhill from here" and "Truckin up to Buffalo", both DVDs from 1989 concerts.

Hard-core and unsentimental, this low-budget road movie/romance between two HIV-positive gay men manages to be bizarre, bitter, and intriguing. Figuring they have nothing to lose, Craig Gilmore and Mike Dytri hit the road as fugitives, where they act out bad-boy fantasies amid provocative conversations. Director Greg Araki, who also wrote the script, does a decent job of juggling black humor and bleak rage. It's a tough movie to watch, but nihilism rarely looks this good. Badly acted film convoluted by its blatant politicization of AIDS.......2005-11-17

AIDS may well be a disease allowed to fester and grow as the result of U.S. government policy. That IS the belief of many activists. And yet, today (2005) we see that even with all the information, the cautionary advice, knowledge about how to prevent and avoid AIDS, many in the gay population are ignoring that advice and eschewing any protection and even refusing medication as some believe that there is NO such thing as AIDS. Rather it is the medication that is causing the sickness.

When this film was made, it was full of sound and fury signifying "something", I'm sure. However, in retrospect, it is quite obviously a first attempt by a freshman director at writing and filming a feature film. On that front, it does not work.

The acting in The Living End is so poor that it was painfully difficult for me to watch the film through to the end. The staging and premises were stilted and hackneyed. It would seem that the actors were cast for their "hunk" factor and nothing more.

Araki has gone on to make more fully developed and complete films. The Living End is a film that started his career (though it wasn't really his first film) and certainly garnered him praise by the gonzo film set.

However, if you are looking for a fully realized film like his own Mysterious Skin - don't look here. Parting Glances is a film that provides a far more full realization of the anger that some feel regarding AIDS. So too is Longtime Companion. The Living End tries to be a gay/AIDS Thelma and Louise. It isn't.

I give it two stars for its efforts, but that is stretching it even in my book...

What a smart director can do with no budget.......2005-07-27

This movie is harsh and brutal, but bizzare and engrossing all the same. Although slghtly flawed by the whining character Jon {his monotone gloom does get on one's nerves}, the movie moves along at a fast pace, erotically tinged and violently charged. And judt when things get a little too bleak, something bizzare occurs, occasionally too hysterically funny. The two lesbians who pick up Luke at the beginning are completely off the wall.The dialogue is smart and witty. The direction is gritty. Reccomended.

a complex and challenging movie.......2005-05-20

Gregg Araaki is not afraid to go there and he does in this seminal classic. The love story is unconventional and so are the politics,mood and story. This one isn't for everyone but for fans of kick ass subversive cinema its a must.

A good film (in its time) with some flaws.......2005-01-12

I liked this film so much years ago that I bought it. (VHS) I looked past the uneven script and occasionally cheesy and hysterical acting, and saw the love story.

The leads here are relatively strong and believable, and the story differs markedly from every AIDS cliche. It's a decent effort and a decent film.

It is "irresponsible" in its depiction of violence and even violence between the lovers, but it's a thrill ride of a movie that has some sense of resolution and some sence of acceptance that I appreciated.

It's rough and certainly not for everybody, but it's worth seeing. Recommended.

So what ever happened to Mike Dytri?.......2004-11-21

This is my favorite American film. It is pleasant and relaxing The violence is never gratuitous. Some of the scenes, such as the two murderous lesbians and the wife with the knife, suffer from some poor acting, but the two leads are delightful, especially Mike Dytri as Luke, a lovable hunk who can act, and is very easy on the eyes. The sex scenes are too tame, but the portrayal of two men in love is quite convincing and enjoyable. Like most American movies there is too much aimless action and too little intellectual interest, but perhaps this is just a mirror of the culture itself.

Some of the gun play is a little tacky, and the sub-plot of Jon's fag-hag is not very believable. Also one wishes for a sound track, especially in the love scenes.

Very informative........2006-07-27

I expected this to be more of a music video than a commentary. I should have done my homework before I bought it. The commentary was done very well. The music videos of "The Bonny Swans" and "The Mummers' Dance" were very enjoyable. I have yet to view or listen to the snippets offerred on the dvd of other songs from her cd's yet. I have all her cds with the full song versions.
As I said, I should have done my homework. I am happy that I did not pay the price that stores and some websites are charging for this dvd.

The Lady of Shalott Live: Takes the Breath Away.......2006-01-19

The high point of this production is a breathtaking performance of "The Lady of Shalott". The performance is a stripped down rendition but that doesn't hurt the song. The extra production layers that featured Loreena's voice on harmony as well as the lead vocals are gone. The song is shorter as well, probably due to the time restrictions of the original broadcast. What comes out is four minutes of absolutely stunning ethereal beauty! McKennitt is an exceptional vocalist at the worst of times. At her best she combines the best elements of expression and restraint to form an almost otherworldly presence. The arrangement is strong and rich but never overwhelms her vocals and never becomes submerged by them either. The cello line is played by Ofra Harnoy in this rendition and is much stronger in the mix than on the original recording. This is wonderful addition for anyone who sees and hears the performance because Harnoy is as expressive with the cello as McKennitt is with her voice. They've worked together since this was recorded and hopefully will do so again. All that can be said about this is that's it's pure magic, enchantment guaranteed to leave the viewer begging for more.

The remainder of the content is a mixture of the same strengths and faults inherent in almost all of the documentary profiles that come from Public Broadcasting (PBS). The subject matter is interesting, and, as is the norm with the network, treated with great respect. There's plenty of commentary and most of it is well worth the time to needed to absorb it. They keep things sanitized (which means anyone looking for ribald tales of orgies and infighting needs to look somewhere else) but (to their credit) they manage to steer clear of the vacuous sorts of sound bytes that occur when Network people interview politicians or athletes. McKennitt comes across as soft spoken, and extremely thoughtful. The things she says do give the viewer and added insight into the workings behind her work. The commentary is (for the most) nicely interspersed with bits of music. The only complaint is that it cuts into the music too often. This is especially true when she discusses the creation of "The Dark Night of the Soul" (which I personally feel is one of her very best works). If this video is missing anything it's a complete performance of that work.

The DVD is uneven from a technical standpoint. The most important points, the quality of the sound and the video itself, are exemplary. There are also a couple of nice extra features added; the DVD includes the original videos of the Bonny Swans and the Mummer's Dance. The menus are another matter. They're easy enough to navigate but they have a couple of quirks. The opening menu won't let anyone advance to the next stage until after they select a set of subtitles. Those can be turned of once the program is running but that should have been an option in the first place. The choice between audio tracks (PCM Stereo or 5.1) has to be made before the program starts. And it can't be changed once the feature starts, at least not without going back to the main menu. What were they thinking?

These are minor complaints though. Though the content ranges between good, great and magnificent and (as stated earlier) the sound quality is exceptional. The 5.1 track is the better of the two (even on conventional stereo) as it seems to have more information on it. Right now this DVD is added as a bonus to any of the remastered albums if they're purchased directly from Loreena's site. The sound quality of the original releases was very good (considerably better than almost anything else that was issued during the same time period in fact) the remastered audio is a huge improvement over the originals. For anyone interested in McKennitt's work this is worth considering.

Overall this is a wonderful introduction for people unfamiliar with McKennitt and an excellent addition for those already entranced. For lovers of great music her performance of "The Lady of Shalott" makes it a "must have".
