5 out of 5 stars a wonderful collection.......2007-05-15

I love this collection. It brings me back to Hemingway who I read while growing up in the Fifties and Sixties. The restorations of the Scope movies are outstanding and the extras are informative. The cinematography and music of Adventures of a Young Man are very moving. This film brought me back to my youth. I highly recommend.

3 out of 5 stars why do Fox do this.......2007-03-26

I have already purchased Snows of Kilimanjaro and The Sun Also Rises. I would really like to add Adventures of a Young Man to my Fox CinemaScope collection but why do they (Fox) force me to pay $44 for the lot. Come on Fox Classics why not release these as singles. Same with Soldier of Fortune and The Tall Men. I wonder if the studios read these messages but if they did they would find out what people want. I am collecting the entire 20th Century Fox CinemaScope collection from 1953 to 1967 and its nice to have them in single discs so they can be placed one year after the other. Waiting for all those other classics to be released like King of the Khyber Rifles, The Rains of Ranchipur, Woman's World, The Cobweb, The Adventures of Hajji Baba and many more. Come on Fox Classics bring 'em on.

4 out of 5 stars Great Kili DVD.......2005-10-19

Excellent film... shame that IMAX films are typically only 40 mins long.. but the dvd has extra features such as a 'making of' which adds to the package. From someone who's climbed the mountain the movie is a nice reminder of the experience.. some amazing aerial shots... worth the money just for those.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE! Inspiring!.......2005-06-09

This movie was great! It had beautiful cinematography and it was great seeing it on the IMAX screen!
I felt that it was inspiring and made me want to climb Kilimanjaro myself.

I saw it 2 times in theaters, then bought it on
DVD.

In the movie, they show 5 ordinary people brave the mountain. They go throught 5 different climate
zones, all beautiful and mysterious in their own ways. This movie also teaches you about Kilimanjaro itself,
the Great Rift Valley, and other unique features. The narrator and trek leader- Jacob. The trekkers- (adults) Roger, Heidi, Audrey, (kids) Hans, and Nicole (also Nicole's father, but you don't really get to now him) are ages 12-64 years old. David Breashears, the Director/Producer says he pick those 5 people to represent the audience- the ordinary people.

The movie shows each trekkers journey with interviews along the way.

Also another great feature of the film is the music. Composer Alan Williams really brings to life the beauty, power, and mystery of Kilimanjaro with the great score!

Other reviews criticize this movie because they don't show how hard it is to climb this mountain and what not. I say WHO CARES?!?!?!?!?! THis movie isn't about the hardships of making it to the top, it's about Kilimanjaro; its beauty, power, and mystery.

There are special features on the DVD that are a Making of Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa, production slide show, quiz, and what else is on DVD.

Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa is a great and inspiring movie that moves you.

5 out of 5 stars Needs some straight-talk on Western Breach.......2004-10-05

I came across this DVD a couple months before leaving for Kilimanjaro and enjoyed it much. If you are going to climb the mountain via the Western Breach route, purchase is a no-brainer.

It, along with a Nova documentary that appeared about the same time, seems to have contributed to an explosion of thousands of Americans climbing Kilimanjaro in the last 3 years. Said one porter-aid worker I met in in Moshi, "Americans used to be rare in Tanzania, but in the last 2-3 years, they are suddenly common ...". Everyone I met seemed to have viewed or been prompted to go by these two videos.

The film is definately IMAX-ie; beautiful photography, nice swelling music, numerous scenes of herds of animals fleeing in terror along the plains of Africa as the camera swoops down from an airplane overhead. You get the idea.

The narrator (mountain guide Jacob Kyungai) intones that climbers of Kilimanjaro are "ordinary people people, mostly", then goes on to introduce a Gilligan's Island cast of climbers, picked to reflect (or engage) the folk who might go to the science museum IMAX theater on a Saturday afternoon -- as compared to those who actually climb Kili.

You have The Professor (Roger Bilham, an expert volcanologist), Ginger/Mary-Ann (Heidi Albertsen, identified on the DVD only as "Trekker: Denmark", but in reality a New York super-model you have probably seen more often on the cover of women's magazines at your grocery store check-out line), a couple of precocious 12-going-on-25 year old kids (self-possessed and well-behaved, every Yuppie parent's dream-child), a writer (Audrey Salkeld), and Rick Thomson, who barely made it out of the editing room, but is the father of the 12 year old girl (and was in a bad car accident shortly before the climb and had a pin in his hip, etc.)

Basically, the film shows a sort of idealized climb. This is not a movie about man against nature, or pushing the limits of human endurance. It's about a beautiful, diverse mountain and some "ordinary" (*cough*) people who went to the top.

Bottom line: if you are going to experience a Kilimanjaro climb, it's hard to beat tagging along with an expert volcanologist and a super-model.

The DVD contains a "Making of" feature that is of even more interest to prospective climbers than the main film. Behind-the-scenes shots of the logistics and events provides context to the apparent effortless serenity of the main feature.

The problem with the film is this: having climbed Kilimanjaro (via Lemosho - Shira -Western Breach route), the depiction of the Western Breach is disturbingly glossy. This problem is not unique to this film; it exists in the Nova documentary and virtually all text and sales-pitches advocating the Western Breach. Basically, the pitch is that the Western Breach route is "non-technical" and suitable for anyone in good physical condition who is capable of hiking for 6-8 hours a day.

The reality is there are at least 4 spots where you will find yourself clinging to an ice-covered rock, searching for slight finger & toe-hold indentations as you skitter 20-30 feet sideways. Miss a finger or toe, have a balance problem, or slip more than one hold, and you will fall 1000 feet to the rocks below. And aside from those 4 sections, a misstep or slip on any of the rest of the breach also means falling hundreds of feet. And keep in mind you are likely wearing a 20+ pound pack with several pounds of water. Basically, anything is "non-technical" if you don't use safety equipment.

The Western Breach is precarious and dangerous. In the film, they show the cast clambering over refrigerator-sized, step-like blocks of stone. This amounts to at most 15% of the climb. The rest is not really shown, probably because it is too precarious to get footage of. A parent allowing a 13-year old on this route is inconceivable to me, unless ropes and support equipment were used to assist.

While clinging to ice-covered rocks and seeing nothing but air beneath my feet, my initial reaction was anger at the public-relations puff-job in this movie and other sources. This was quickly subsumed by the desire to simply stay alive, repeated a couple dozen times that day.

While this movie might lead people in good shape, used to jogging around the park or hiking the local hills, into thinking it's no big deal to climb Kilimanjaro via WB ("hey, a couple 13 year olds did it"), the reality is inexplicably different than the PR. You have been warned.

By the way, if you read the companion book to this film, there is a note at the end that mentions that a few months after filming, the cast and crew was reassembled and climbed Kilimanjaro AGAIN (a 2nd time) to obtain more shots.

4 out of 5 stars NICE IMAGES, NOT TOO EXCITING.......2004-08-13

This is a very nice video in which you get the see all the amazing sites of Kilimanjaro. After having climbed, I can say that it is as nice as it seems in this video.

The only problem with the video is that there is not too much excitement upon achieving each of the stages. Reaching the summit is very anti-climatic, as they simply walk onto it. Perhaps it would be impossible to express the true excitement and beauty of the summit, but I do believe they could have tried harder.

If you are planning a trip to Kilimanjaro, it is a nice video to see what you are going to face. But don't rely on it to predict the difficulties, I think it is a bit more difficult and a bit more exciting than they make it out to be.

4 out of 5 stars Great flick.......2003-11-25

I enjoyed this movie a lot... went to the IMAX theater 3 times to see it! The cinematography is terrific... some totally unbelievable views. Made me want to go and climb the thing (sabbatical coming next summer)! Anyone who likes the mountains/hiking/climbing should see it... go to the IMAX to see it first, then order the DVD.

I agree that they could have spent more time showing the climbers personal experiences. There was a "Naked Planet" special on Kili that was on PBS a couple of years ago, that did it much better.

Just a few clarifications to som of the other reviews: the approach is via the Machame Route, but the summit climb is via the Great Western Breach, which is the most difficult trekking route on the mountain. The route that is known as the Coca-cola route, is the Marangu route, which is the most popular route on the mountain, that also has the highest failure rate, because it ascends too fast.

Amazon.com essential video

Several pieces of Hemingway fiction fold together for this pastiche movie, in which a writer (Gregory Peck) lies on the slope of Africa's famous mountain and thinks back on his life while awaiting medical attention. "Africa" in this case is a back-screen projection; fortunately, the majority of the film is told through flashbacks set in France, Spain, and other parts of the Dark Continent. Peck's relationships with various women (played by Susan Hayward, Ava Gardner, and Hildegard Knef) are at the center of his recollections, but the overall thesis is a very Hemingway-esque summary of the responsibility of a writer to get at the truth. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-05-07

A fan of Gregory Peck, will enjoy this movie. Unfortunately the quality of my DVD,made watching this movie to fuzzy to enjoy. Thereby I recommend asking about clarity before purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars What might have been.......2007-04-11

This film can only be characterized as a huge disappointment. A great cast, a screenplay based on the works (and life) of a great author, a dangerous, romantic setting, and this film simply doesn't go anywhere at the end. This film opens with the main character Harry Street (played by Gregory Peck) lying in bed at a safari camp in Africa, wounded, perhaps mortally, and being attended by his lover, Helen (played by Susan Hayward). We are then taken back to Peck's earlier life as a young, talented writer (much like Hemingway himself) through a series of flashbacks. We see the ups and downs of his life, his loves, and his mistakes. We are occasionally taken back to Africa where Street reflects on his life, the women that he loved, and the relationship with his current love. This is a tale of adventure, of life, of love, and of reflection, it could have been an all time great film, but unfortunately falls well short. There is a lot to like in this film. The acting is, for the most part, top notch. Great performances by Susan Wayward and Ava Gardner in my view. The complex relationship between Peck and Gardner is particularly well done. You'll really feel the emotions of their love affair, as well as their ultimate lack of any real connection. I also thought that the overall portrayal of Street's life and his successes and failures, both professional and romantic, was well done. There are some things I really dislike about this film though. The cinematography in Africa is horrid. One thing that the audience can usually count on in films set in Africa (particularly with a safari-related theme - compare with other Africa films shot in the same era such as Mogambo or King Solomon's Mines) is spectacular cinemtography of the wildlife, the landscape, etc. These scenes are so dark and poorly shot that you'll be left wondering why you bothered. Second, the writer/producer/director went over the top with the melodrama at times, and it really weakens the overall effect of the film. I found the ambulance scene in Spain in which Harry Street comes across his long lost love in the middle of a battle to be almost laughably overblown. Finally, the ending is unimaginative and anti-climactic. Did Street truly find the women he loves because she spent one night taking care of him on what may be his deathbead? A pretty good film that is best remembered for what it might have been.

5 out of 5 stars I love the video!.......2007-03-19

At last I'm happy to watch the movie, one of my favourite Gregory Peck's movies, in excellent quality! Video&sound of new release (from March 6, 2007) are marvelous! I had been watching this as though it was a completely fresh movie. I began to love this even more.

5 out of 5 stars THIS is the official Fox "Snows of Kilimanjaro" DVD to get! .......2007-03-13

For the first time in home video history, Twentieth Century-Fox Home Entertainment has released "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" in a NON-public domain edition. Since the advent of the VCR, "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" has been resigned to crappy, public domain videos from just about every cheapy distributor around. FINALLY Twentieth Century-Fox, the original studio behind this classic, has taken it from the public domain and given it a proper home video release on DVD. If you love this fan, you can use all previous DVDs of this film for coasters for your drink as you enjoy this marvel. Completely remastered and restored, "Snows" is nothing less than a technical wonder. For years I thought the only way to watch this film was on washed out, dark and scratchy prints. No more! Twentieth Century-Fox gives us a glowing transfer, superb soundtrack and loads of extras. Included as part of the "Ernest Hemmingway Film Collection", this DVD is also sold separately, which is basis for this review. Do not hesitiate to buy this version, which currently retails for under 20 bucks. It is worth every penny! Good-bye poor quality PD DVDs, hello "Snows of Kilimanjaro" the way it was meant to be seen!

4 out of 5 stars A big popular star film of its time..........2007-01-14

Gregory Peck plays Harry Street, a famous American writer, who lies dangerously ill in a hunting camp at the foot of the highest peak in Africa, Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro... His lovely companion Susan Hayward, who had arranged this hunting trip in the hopes of winning his love, takes care of him faithfully and prays for his recover... Peck, surrounded by vultures in the trees, is semi delirious and fears that he's going to die from an infected wound...

His feverish mind goes back to his youth... He recalls his uncle Bill (Leo G. Carrell), who guided his life in those early years, Connie (Helene Stanley), the first girl he was interested in, and his travels around the world in search for something he never seemed to discover...

We see him entering a charming bistro in Montparnasse, Paris, where he first meets the beautiful (Cynthia) Ava Gardner... Inspired by her love, he writes his first novel, making her the central character without conscious planning...

'Snows of Kilimanjaro' is Hayward's third movie with director Henry King, and her second with Peck after "David and Bathsheba." Hayward and Peck's scenes at the foot of Kilimanjaro are constantly interrupted by flashbacks and this, plus the fact that most of their sequences in France were left on the cutting room floor, made Hayward's part sort of 'evaporate' from everybody's mind... However, she does have strong dramatic scenes at the end of the movie... Ava Gardner appeared as the ideal Hemingway heroine...

The film celebrated the mastery of Benny Carter--one of the most important and influential musician in the history of jazz, and got two Oscar nominations for Art Direction/Set Decoration and Cinematography...

Description

Explore Kilimanjaro—the breathtaking island in the sky.

At 20,000 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak and also the world's tallest volcano. Rising through a shroud of mist and clouds, Kilimanjaro floats like a mirage above the African savannah. A trek up its steep flanks takes climbers through five different worlds of climate and vegetation, ranging from rainforest near the bottom to arctic ramparts of ice surrounding a rocky crater at the peak.

Kilimanjaro is not only a nature-lover's paradise, but also a tantalizing mystery for many scientists. The glacier atop the mountain has shrunk by over a third in the last decade due to global warming, and could disappear altogether by 2015. And although classified as dormant, Kilimanjaro has begun to stir, and evidence suggests that a massive landslide could rip open the side of the mountain causing a cataclysmic flow of hot gases and rock, similar to Mount St. Helens.

NOVA takes an unusual expedition to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro to investigate these two scientific mysteries, and to explore the unique beauty of this "island in the sky." Joining NOVA on this breathtaking adventure is African-born naturalist Robin Buxton, who was disabled by polio at age two, and who now dreams of summiting a mountain he has long studied.

Special DVD features include: materials and activities for educators; a link to the NOVA Web site; scene selections; closed captions; and described video for the visually impaired.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly realistic.......2007-01-10

Though we enjoyed the IMAX Kilimanjaro film, it fairly well glossed over the difficulties of climbing the mountain, and pretty much ignored the porters who labor climbers up the mountain. This Nova special is a bit more realistic, and brought back memories of my Kili climb two years ago. The scripting is a bit hokey, and they use the term "high altitude mountaineering" with annoying regularity... "high altitude trekking" would be more accurate. At any rate, it's an interesting film, and discusses the problems on the mountain associated with global warming and climate change. The quality isn't IMAX, but it's still pretty good, and worth having a look.

    4 out of 5 stars A trekker's presentation.......2007-03-29

This is a very interesting presentation --not polished-- but very informative from a boots-on-the-ground trekker's perspective.

I'm hoping they produce a DVD for the Machame-ascent/Mweka-descent. Don't forget to visit their website ([...]); it's loaded with information.

I have the other two popular DVDs on Kilimanjaro ('To the Roof of Africa' and 'Volcano Above the Clouds'), but this one might be my favorite due to it's unique point-of-view.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile for those considering a Kili trek - but a bit rough around the edges........2006-08-22

If you're considering a trek up Kilimanjaro - this video is a nice overview of the Western Breach route, and informative on what to expect from a competent outfitter. Take notes and you'll probably have some good questions to ask an outfitter (regardless of the route you take) before making your deposit. For that reason alone it is worthwhile.

    The only caveats:

    - It's produced by a Kili outfitter. Naturally there is some bias toward their company. That element doesn't overly dominate To their credit, they seem to offer some compelling services - an all-inclusive package, chemical toilets, showers, that many outfitters omit.

    - This is not a glitzy docu-film like the IMAX video that's available. It doesn't really compromise the video - but it's worthwhile to have your expectations in check. Most of the video is shot handheld with associated narration, and some of the maps and similar are actual video of a paper map. The upside to this is that it comes across a bit more 'real' than a high-dollar production.

If you're considering a trek up Kilimanjaro and haven't done a lot of research - this is probably a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute must before you climb Kili.......2005-09-07

I have gone up twice ... the second time with Kiliwarriors. The IMAX movie is instructional about the mountain but does NOT show the climb the "way it is". This DVD shows the routes clearly on maps and conditions to expect and food, tents, etc. Maybe more importantly it shows some of the often overlooked dangers. It will show you questions to ask a potential outfitter. It goes through a recommended guide for equipment to bring with you. Having gone with Kiliwarriors I now know they are the supreme caretakers of climbing companies bar none. I highly recommend the DVD and the company that made it.

--Tom Keogh
