The 2006 limited-edition two-disc release of George Lucas's epic space fantasy Star Wars is not only the first time the movie has been officially available by itself on DVD. It marks the first-ever DVD release of Star Wars as it originally played in theaters in 1977. What does that mean exactly? Well, for starters, the initial title crawl proclaims that this is just Star Wars, not Episode IV, A New Hope. Second, the film is without the various "improvements" and enhancements Lucas added for the theatrical rerelease in 1997 as well as the DVD premiere in 2004. So no more critters and droids scurrying around the port of Mos Eisley when Luke and Obi-Wan Kenobi first arrive, no meetings between Han Solo and Jabba the Hut and between Luke and Biggs (extraneous scenes that were cut in 1977), no enhanced explosions during the final reel, and--most importantly to some fans--no more of Greedo shooting first in the bar. Instead Han is free to be the scoundrel and not even let Greedo squeeze off a shot.
What do you lose by watching the 1977 version? Dolby Digital 5.1 EX sound, for one thing (only 2.0 Surround here). Digital cleanup for another--Tatooine looks like it's been coated with an additional layer of sand cloud. But for home-theater owners, the biggest frustration will be from the non-anamorphic picture. On a widescreen TV, an anamorphically enhanced (16x9) picture at a 2.35:1 aspect ratio will fill the screen with the exception of small black bars on the top and bottom. The original edition of Star Wars, however, is not anamorphically enhanced (sometimes referred to as "4:3 letterbox"), so on a widescreen TV it will have large black bars on the top, the bottom, and the sides unless you stretch the picture (and distort it in the process, especially considering the substandard picture quality). If you're watching on a standard square-shaped (4:3) TV, though, you won't notice a difference.
Yes, it's true that serious home-theater lovers who want spectacular sound and anamorphically enhanced picture can always watch the 2004 version of the movie also included in this set. But chances are good that they already picked up the trilogy edition of all three films, so their decision to buy the 2006 two-disc edition depends on how much they want the original film. The official LucasFilm stance is that this is an individual release of the 2004 version of Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope, and the 1977 version of the film is merely a "bonus feature." Common speculation is that the only reason the original versions are seeing the official light of day at all is to undercut the booming black market for the laserdisc version. Star Wars fans will have to decide for themselves if that's worth the purchase. --David Horiuchi
Description
For the first time ever and for a limited time only, the enhanced versions of the Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi will be available individually on DVD. Plus, these 2-Disc DVD's will feature a bonus disc that includes, for the first time ever on DVD, the original films as seen in theaters in 1977, 1980 and 1983.

Aliens is one of the few cases of a sequel that far surpassed the original. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, who awakens on Earth only to discover that she has been hibernating in space so long that everyone she knows is dead. Then she is talked into traveling (along with a squad of Marines) to a planet under assault by the same aliens that nearly killed her. Once she gets there, she finds a lost little girl who triggers her maternal instincts--and she discovers that the company has once again double-crossed her, in hopes of capturing one of the aliens to study as a military weapon. Directed and written by James Cameron, this is one of the most intensely exciting (not to mention intensely frightening) action films ever, with a large ensemble cast that includes Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, and Michael Biehn. Weaver defined the action woman in this film and walked away with an Oscar nomination for her trouble. --Marshall Fine
Description
In this action-packed sequel to Alien, Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, the only survivor from mankind's first encounter with the monstrous Alien. Her account of the Alien and the fate of her crew are received with skepticism - until the mysterious disappearance of colonists on LV-426 leads her to join a team of high-tech colonial marines sent in to investigate.
Personally supervised by director James Cameron, this special edition includes scenes eliminated prior to the film's 1986 release which broaden the narrative scope and enrich the emotional impact of the film.

Customer Reviews:
Marketing ploy to enjoy.......2007-06-16
If you're not the type to run out and replace your VCR collection as soon as the new format arrives, you probably appreciate a slightly clever ploy to spring for a new version of a classic. An additional 17 minutes of film may seem little justification for this expensive proposition. But seeing the slimey xenomorphs on DVD is reward enough for a fan. The discs include the theatrical release and the director's cut along with other extras, which include an interview with director James Cameron. Cameron dwells excessively on his strained patience dealing with a British film crew. His comments may reveal insight into Cameron's choice to forgo taking the director's seat for the third film (which received some critical acclaim but disappointed fans).
I originally screened Aliens in the theater in July 1986. I remember watching the credits roll with the powerful soundtrack that kept the heart pounding as the last of the text disappeared. Even with the lights coming up, the sound of a slithering alien sent chills down my spine. Sadly, this part of the track is missing from this set.
Successive viewings have not spoiled enjoyment of this finely crafted script and its special effects. Rubber suits, scale models and puppetry have never been used to such great effect. The scenes involving the "drop ship" are stunning. The breathless sequence that takes the drop ship from the mother ship to the planet's surface is but one of many that make this nightmare so real.
Few pauses and a lot of action pace this relentless story. Cameron's decision to write Marines into the confrontation was nothing shy of genius. The Marines think they're heading to a "bug hunt." Bill Paxton's Hudson, who provides comedic relief, describes the array of weaponry they bring. But for all the techno gadetry and fire power, the Marines find themselves stranded amid an army of aliens intent on making them hosts for more bugs. Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, whom we didn't know was a parent from the original release, provides a first-rate performance in the escape ahead of the massing aliens.
Cameron's tip of the hat to Hitchcock is one the best moments in cinematic history. The confrontation in the bowels of the disintegrating atmosphere generating plant is as disturbing as anything science fiction has to offer. Not since Hitchcock's "The Birds" has there been anything like it. And, there's more. The final battle with the queen alien is a masterpiece of action filming. Not until the survivors are snuggly tucked into their cryotubes, do we finally get to gasp a sigh of relief.
This Time There's More..........2007-05-31
After achieving huge critical and box office success with 1979's "Alien", it is surprising that 20th Century Fox didn't rush a sequel into production, although at the time sequels were not so quick to arrive after their predecessors, but still the property was hot and the decision would have made them a lot of money. On the flip side, if a sequel had been rushed, the story may have suffered which would have lent to reduced box office and possibly the death of the franchise, so it's probably a good thing that Fox exercised patience with this franchise and waited 7 years before releasing the James Cameron directed sequel, "Aliens" to excited audiences worldwide.
"Aliens" begins with Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the only surviving member of the Nostromo crew, being discovered by a salvage ship a half century after the events in "Alien". Upon arriving on Earth, she discovers that a human colony has been set up on the very planet her former crew had found the creatures on. Not surprisingly, contact with that colony has been lost, and a squad of Marines are being prepared to be sent to the planet to determine what happened, if there are any survivors, and exterminate whatever creatures are left. However, the best bet the Marines have for success is if Ripley returns with them to the planet, so after just recovering from her fight with the first alien, and her excessively long sleep, Ripley finds herself face-to-face once more with the creatures of her nightmares.
James Cameron (director of "The Terminator") was given no small task when he wrote and directed this sequel to the incredible 1979 film "Alien". A major decison that Cameron made in creating this movie was changing the tone and type of movie this is from that of its predecessor. Instead of being a methodical game of cat-and-mouse, relying heavily on atmosphere and the audience's imagination to craft the horror like the first movie, "Aliens" was a much more action-packed thrill ride with a little bit of horror thrown into the mix. The decision could have been costly by isolating fans of the work Ridley Scott had done on the first film; however, the decision worked out for the best, delivering audiences what is quite possibly a superior movie to "Alien". The story was much faster paced, yet still not skimpy on the details or the fear factor, with more action involving the aliens. Though shadows were not used as heavily in this film as they were in the original, the suspense surrounding when and where the aliens would strike next was equally thrilling to that of Ridley Scott's creation. The special effects work in this one was better than the original (as it should be considering advancements made during the 7 year gap between films), but the best part about the effects for this movie was the practical effects work that was done to create the massive alien creature known as the Queen. The effects for that alien is some of the best practical effects seen in almost any movie, and the final fight between the Queen and Ripley is incredibly fun to watch.
The cast, led by Sigourney Weaver (the only returning cast member from the original), was full of talented actors such as Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, and Lance Henriksen who each brought a depth and reality to each of their characters that is often lacking in action/horror films. The success of "Aliens", coupled with that of the first film brought even more acclaim for actress Sigourney Weaver, who solidified her place in the pantheon of great action heroes (or heroines), and even garnered her an Oscar nomination for her work in this film.
"Aliens" is rated R for violence and language.
A classic science fiction movie with Sigourney Weaver at her best.......2007-05-17
It is very rare that we have the chance to see a science fiction movie where part two of the movie was better than part one. This is that kind of movie. If you are a fan of science fiction movies then you must add this one to your collection. Although this one was better than the first (Alien 1979), you'll still want to add the first one to your collection as another science fiction classic.
A brilliant sequel.......2007-04-19
James Cameron directed one of the most exciting and fascinating SF action adventure films ever made in Aliens. Not only does the story flow seamlessly from the first film of the series, Alien, but the characters, special effects and directorial pacing cause the film to pound like a sledge hammer from start to finish. The action is nearly non-stop once it begins and the character of Ripley as all protagonists should be, is driven further and further up that tree of absolute peril until you are just sure she'll be torn limb from limb. The grisly antagonists drive the action with such relentless power that the screen seems to come alive with their swarming malice. No surprise there though, since these monsters were dreamt up by Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett and brought to organic, ghastly life by the artist and sculptor H.R. Giger. If you haven't seen it, see it. If you've seen it already, see it again and tune into the finer cinematic touches that make the danger so palpable, especially the sound.
modern day giant bug movie.......2007-03-26
Oh yeah. Ripley as the Orkin Man. This is the version with the extra dialog, softening her up a bit. It was a bit noticeable, but I've seen this about 50 times so it was more apparent to me. It was actually kind of good because it made her transformation all the more logical. The movie is rip roaring great on all levels. The bugs are on screen much more than in Alien, and the momma bug is a sight to see. The two momma figures battling it out over their progeny (sort of) is truly great ("leave her alone, you beotch!" being a highlight). Special effects are good, Sigourney Weaver is good, Bill Paxton as the coward is excellent, livening things up a bit.
This movie is in a different category than Alien, the first movie, but as itself it is still great entertainment.

Bob Hope is in top form in this Technicolor parody of pirate pictures, doing his best vaudeville shtick as an inept performer trying to save princess Virginia Mayo from the evil clutches of governor Walter Slezak and pirate Victor McLaglen. It's all ridiculous fun, of course, but if you're a fan of Hope, you never tire of his self-effacing gags and double-entendres. His out-of-place show biz jabs were always clever, and they're all the funnier in this period setting--particularly the Bing Crosby jokes. But Walter Brennan nearly steals the film as a wacky pirate scheming to steal buried treasure, and tattooing the map on Hope's chest. Yet the two best routines are when Hope tries to conceal his chest while taking a bath with Slezak, and when he tries to impersonate McLaglen as "the Hook." --Bill Desowitz
Description
The legendary Bob Hope takes to the high seas in this hilarious, OscarÂ(r)-nominated* romantic comedy co-starring Virginia Mayo, Walter Slezak, Walter Brennan and Victor McLaglen! Sylvester the Great (Hope) is a 17th-century entertainer with an act so atrocious, he's exiled from England. Aboard a ship bound for America, he finds himself falling for the beautiful Princess Margaret(Mayo), a woman uninterested in lovenot to mention his lousy one-liners. But when an evil band of pirates attacks the ship and captures the princess, her only hope is the cowardly comedian. Can Sylvester stop cracking jokes and muster the courage to rescue his royal love? In other words, will heand Margaret end up walking down the aisle or walking the plank? *1944: Art Direction (Color); Nonmusical Score

At Last!.......2007-06-11
I don't know about those other reviews, my copy seemed fine so they must have fixed those poor CQ issues - what else is there to say; Its Bob Hope and Pirates!!!
One of Bob Hope's Best.......2007-05-21
I found this movie to be one of his best. In this swashbuckling movie I found a great mix of Pirate action adventure and comedy. The action adventure was real clean fun, and the comedy romance wasn't too mushy. This is a great film for both young and old alike. My 4 yr old boy loved it; I was amazed it kept his attention. He learned alot about Pirates too.
My friends 13 yr old daughter couldn't stop laughing.
Awesome comedic swashbuckling fun!.......2007-02-12
What a cute movie! Bob is just the best when it comes to comedy. This is probably the funniest swashbuckling comedy I've seen so far. Love who Virginia Mayo leaves with at the end of the movie - you know it isn't going to be Bob, he usually can't seem to get & keep the girl!
If you want a funny twist on pirate movies, look no further than this movie. A nice alternative to the over-the-top performance of Johnny Depp's as Captain Jack Sparrow.
fun romp with bob hope.......2007-01-17
want a good way to pass some time when all 123 stations on cable have nothing good on? pop some corn, sit yourself down and enjoy a fun movie from an era that didn't need special effects or violence to make a good movie.
Poor quality DVD - Good movie........2006-10-24
If you want a good clear image, you won't be happy with this DVD. I thought I just had a bad one, but as you read the other reviews, you can see that they all have the same problem. I am returning mine. Hope MGM fixes the problem.

As first lines go, Scaramouche's is irresistible: "He was born with a gift of laughter, and a sense that the world was mad." This exuberant period adventure is pretty irresistible itself--even more than Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk, likewise derived from Rafael Sabatini novels. Within more or less one day in pre-revolutionary France, devil-may-care Stewart Granger learns he's the bastard offspring of a nobleman, gets orphaned, realizes he's fallen in love with his sister (Janet Leigh), swears to avenge his best friend's murder, becomes a hunted traitor, and breaks into show business. George Sidney directs as if making an MGM musical, only with swashbuckling instead of song-and-dance. The unlikely casting of Granger and Mel Ferrer as overripe nemeses proves delightful, cameraman Charles (Sunrise) Rosher's Technicolor palette alternates commedia dell'arte garishness and misty, Watteau-like imagery, and the climactic six-and-a-half-minute duel all over a Parisian theater is a tour de force. --Richard T. Jameson
Customer Reviews:
A great story and Stewart Granger, too.......2007-05-22
Is it just me? I love Technicolor.
This film is fabulous. The plot moves quickly, and the fencing scenes are great. I really like Stewart Granger; he brings a credibility and a personality and a sense of fun to his characters that makes them very real. And, Stewart Granger did all his own stunts; that always adds to a film. I have to say, the man looks good in tights, too (not many men do).
The famous sword fight is done without any dialogue or background music, which makes it very effective. Modern filmmakers should take note.
CLASSIC RASCAL- ROGUE ADVENTURE.......2007-05-08
More over CASSANOVA, DON JUAN, and make way for the man who "was born with the gift of laughter, and the sense that the world was mad", the irrepressable SCARAMOUCHE!
Fencing fans will love the best and longest dual to date and yes, they actually TOOK fencing lessons!..and talk about your O'HENRY endings.. YOU definitly will because THIS is a RARE and seldom televised JEWEL!
The mask of a clown, the heart of a patriot!.......2007-03-19
Andre Moreau (Stewart Granger) strikes a blow for vengeance and the French Revolution while traveling with a theater company, and hides his true identity at night behind the mask of stage clown Scaramouche. The beautiful Lenore (Eleanor Parker) is his love interest in the Theater Company and the lovely Aline de Gaurillac de Bourbon (Janet Leigh) is his love interest in the French nobility. Aline just so happens to be `engaged to Noel Marquis de Maynes (Mel Ferrer), one of the greatest swordsmen in all of France. The swordplay, the wordplay, and the horseplay are all directed beautifully by "The Three Musketeers" (1948) director George Sidney. Granger excelled playing these swashbuckler roles and did a magnificent job here. The period costumes and the sets are especially well done and a film never looked better in Technicolor than this one! Scaramouche is hunted by the French government due to his popularity with the people, and his ability to out fence many of the royal court's aristocratic men. Several have died at his brilliant sword's point. "Scaramouche" is one of the best swashbuckler films of its kind and belongs in every classic adventure dvd library. Special features include: Interview with Mel Ferrer / feature; "En Garde: Great Screen Swordfights" and the films theatrical trailer. En Garde!
Great entertainment.......2007-03-16
A gorgeous swashbuckler film in technicolor. Splendid sets, beautiful scenery. Technically perfect. The cast is excellent. Granger fits his role perfectly. The story is not so well developed, a little loose and childish. Makes a wonderful film for the young ones: It has enough action, duels, comedy and romance to keep their attention.
However, one would have wished they had thought more on the adults too.
En Garde!.......2007-02-15
I admit that I assumed this was another typical swashbuckling film. Boy, was I wrong. This is a technicolor spectacular showcasing the charm of Stewart Granger, fiery intensity of Eleanor Parker and the athleticism of Mel Ferrer. Janet Leigh is beautiful but does not have very much to do here. This is a wonderful film with lots of drama and comedy. I really highly recommend this as a family film. Granger really gets to show off his talent as a comedian. Parker is exquisitely gorgeous and high strung as a gypsy woman. The swordplay btwn Granger & Ferrer is exciting. This ranks with "Mark of Zorro" starring Tyrone Power for captivating the viewer's attention.

Customer Reviews:
Bette Davis' portrayal of Apple Annie is pure magic!.......2007-03-19
Frank Capra's remake of his 1940 "Lady For A Day," is a mix of a Christmas story, Cinderella, and a 1920's gangster tale, all rolled into one! Bette Davis is excellent as a gin guzzling bag lady named Apple Annie, who has a daughter (named Louise and played sweetly by lovely Ann-Margaret) living in Spain, of whom she has never seen (except for an 8 X 10 photograph that Annie lovingly keeps in her room) since sending her there to be schooled. It isn't clear or even explained how the girl got to Spain or why that particular country was selected for Louise's schooling. Annie sends money to Louise, and collects much of it from her streetwise peddler friends, all of who she has named as Louise's Godparents. When Annie receives a letter from Louise, telling her she is bringing her fiancé' to meet her mother, Annie is devasted! Enter Mob boss "Dave the Dude" (Glenn Ford), his nightclub lady friend Queenie Martin (Hope Lange) and mob clown Peter Falk. Annie's peddler friends, along with Queenie, talk Dave into making Annie a lady of society. Dave pulls some strings and even gets Annie a penthouse suite! "Pocketful of Miracles" is a delightful story filled with sentiment, laughs, and magic! Watch as the gang transforms Annie from a street corner hag into a lady of high society. As mob member Junior delares when first seeing Annie's transformation, "She's like a cockroach what turned into a butterfly." Exactly! Hope Lange is great as Queenie Martin and Glenn Ford's "Dave the Dude" is excellent as the Mob Boss who believes Annie's apples are his key to good luck. This one belongs in every dvd collector's library of classic films, especially fans of Bette Davis and Hope Lange. It's truly special. The dvd transfer is flawless and the audio is good and clear. Dvd includes the movie trailer. This one is especially fun to watch during the Christmas holidays and will put you in the Holiday spirit!
Glenn Ford as a Soft-Hearted Gangster?.......2007-01-30
Ok, I'm not too sure Ford really nails his role, though he certainly tries his best.
But otherwise this is a heartwarming, enjoyable New York-during-the-holidays kind of film, with a stellar cast including Bette Davis in a signature role and a very funny Peter Falk as Ford's "primitive" sidekick.
This film has all of Capra's trademark moments, a wonderful Cinderella story enlivened by the setting and the great supporting characters. Though you could easily trim 20 or so minutes, this film is a treat that has gotten better with age.
Great Acting and Very Fun.......2007-01-29
Wonderful story line that's hard to watch without laughing. Great acting as Glenn Ford and Betty Davis try to pull off a great scam for the benefit of Davis' movie daughter. A great movie for the whole family.
Pocketful of Miracles.......2007-01-17
A great movie, with a great cast. A perfect way to start the holiday season. I had it on vhs for many years and was thrilled it was available on dvd. I watch it at least 2 times each holiday season.
Don't miss it.
One of my favorites.......2006-08-15
It's a heart-warming Cinderella story. And an older Bette Davis is Cinderella. Lots of great dialogue. Peter Faulk was nominated for the Academy Award for best supporting actor and Glenn Ford won the Golden Globe for best actor. Thomas Mitchell is great as the Judge, you'll recognize him from his role as Uncle Billy in It's a Wonderful Life.

Yes, it's true that fans who want better sound and picture can always watch the 2004 version of the movie also included in this set.
Customer Reviews:
Star Wars IV.......2007-02-12
Of course I like the theatrical version best. Sometimes the enhanced version throws you off - you're not expecting stuff. Good show.
Buy the VHS.......2006-10-04
I now own 5 versions of this film, and this is the first time I truely felt like I wasted my money. Each version I had previously purchased had been a clear upgrade in quality from past versions, and I was so excited to see the original theatrical versions (as they should be seen)finally available on DVD. Sadly, the picture and sound quality on this is worse than my VHS versions from the 80s. This set is a total rip off and George should be ashamed of himself.
Deceived.......2006-09-25
I was very disappointed in what was supposed to be the original 1977 theatrical release of Star Wars. The scenes I noted cut when this film was released again just prior to Empire were not put back in the film. For example, the scene where Luke watches the opening battle with his field glasses, the exchange between Luke and Biggs where Biggs informs him that he is leaving the academy to join the rebellion, and of course, the exchange between the gangsters (a.k.a. Jabba (pre-worm version)et al) and Solo in the docking bay.
This is definitely not the version I watched in the summer of 1977.
Finally!!!!!!.......2006-09-19
In 1977 I saw episode 4 in a Pittsburgh movie theatre. I left that theatre a changed boy. I waited patiently for each sequel. I was blown away by each one. Now let's fast forward to 2004. I spent my money on the 2004 box trilogy. George Lucas, you are the anti-christ! It is agreed that Episodes 1, 2, and 3 were disasters BUT at least he could have released the original theatrical versions of episodes 4,5, and 6. Thank God I own an original copy of "The Warriors" BUT that is another story. Since I'm on the topic, will someone please pay Mike Tyson to punch Walter Hill in the mouth, as hard as he can. Anyway, in 2004, Lucas seemed hell bent on estranging the true Star Wars fan. Fast Forward to September 2006. While holding out hope that I would find the Criterion version of John Woo's "Hard Boiled," I found the original theatrical release of Episodes 4, 5, and 6. Phew!!! I'm still hearbroken over that whole "The Warriors" director's cut disaster. I'm sorry, I went off on a tangent, didn't I? I'm going to buy a second set of these Star Wars DVD's simply because Lucas can't be trusted. Remember Jar Jar Binks? How about Greedo shooting first? 'Nuff said. True fans know the deal. We all got burned when we bought the 2004 release of the trilogy. Why George? Why? The original theatrical DVD's does not absolve poor Lucas of his prior sins (Episodes 1-3, and the 2004 DVD trilogy disaster) BUT it will shut me up for awhile. These releases have also taught me something. "Director's Cut's" usually suck. Let us all pray that Abel Ferrara does not have a "Director's cut" of "King of New York."
What does "Animorphic" have to do with DVDs?.......2006-09-16
I attended film school and am certainly familiar with the term Animorphic and I know what animorphic widescreen is , as it pertains to film, projectors and lenses. (Basically, a rectangular (widescreen) image is squeezed onto a square frame and during projection a special lens is attached to the projector to expand the image to its original width on the screen.
What does any of this have to do with my DVD, DVD player or television? None contain a projector, lens, or 70MM print of STAR WARS.
Is "animorphic" in DVD terms something completely different?
IF so it should be called by a different term to avoid confusion.
AND what exactly is it?
is ANIMOPHIC in DVD something to do with playing the film on a widescreen/ high definition TV?
IF so this doesnt matter to me since I own a very sharp video projector with a fine lens and have a wide screen in my living room.
It looks about as good as the images i seee projected in movie theatres.
so I have no beef.
Can anyone explain what animorpic means in terms of DVD.
Also, does this version restore C3PO's dialogue about how to
dismantle the tractor beam; It was missing from that last release of the film on VHS/laserdisc.
How about the "close the blast doors" line.
If this is really the 77 version, those scenes shoulkd be there>

This made my friend very happy!.......2007-01-10
I got this for my friend for her birthday she loves this mini series she spoke if it many times she and her mother used to watch it together when she was a little girl she lost her mother to cancer when she was 14 And Beulah Land always made her feel happy and she woud remember the good times they had together.
She had a vhs copy of Beula Land and it broke after many years she then TVO it she did not know that it came on DVD, so when I gave it to her she was thrilled she kept saying no way no way! thank you thank you!
and she turned red and cried she was very pleased with it.
Thank You
tries to be "gone with the wind",it's almost as long, thats as close as they got!!!!!!!.......2006-05-06
my wife got this sad movie as a gift from a girl at work, and oh my!!!!,does it ever stink. plays like a soap opera, and not a good one. just the pits.
"bore with a lot of wind" is what they should call it.......2006-02-22
my wife bought this because she remembered it from her youth and though she liked it. wow was she wrong this is just a long drawen out soap with the barest of stories and way to much huffing and panting from the cast as it turns into "dallas" in the civil war. my wife can't believe she ever liked this junk!!
Civil War Epic.......2005-07-25
Persons who collect good Civil War fiction will love this one.
See a younger Don Johnson here in a major role too for the fans of DJ.
Similiar to the old favorites GONE WITH THE WIND...NORTH & SOUTH...THE BLUE AND THE GRAY. If you enjoyed or own any of those DVD's you won't want to miss adding this mini series to your collection of fine, fictional Civil War drama.
I have long awaited this to come out on DVD. I have tired of and no longer use VHS tapes on my large screen DVD. I cannot tell you just yet about the screen quality of the DVD as mine has not yet arrived at this writing.
The story line is great and the actors all have done a fine job in this story and best of all, the price is great for a great movie.

Customer Reviews:
the perfect sequel.......2007-04-19
