Description
Painter/filmmaker Charli Sarino falls in love and marries Will Madison, her greatest passion and inspiration for her art, the man of her dreams-or is he? When Charli suspects Will is having an affair with one of his wealthy clients, she becomes obsessed with getting the proof -- on videotape. She confronts him during his usual Friday night poker game with his two best friends and shows him the proof. Will claims it was "just sex" and he's willing to do anything to make it up to her. A dangerous game of "Truth or Dare" ensues, and Charli dares Will to choose one of his best friends to have sex with her to prove the "just sex" theory, and right then and there while he watches. The decision and consequences nearly destroy them all.

A milestone of cinematic eroticism, The Story of O was an art house sensation in 1975, and it's still worthy of intelligent discussion. As with the controversial French novella by Pauline Réage, reactions to Just Jaeckin's sumptuous adaptation range from moral outrage to masturbatory indulgence, yet this remains one of the few sex films that stand the test of time (and a lot of academic study). Championed by practitioners of bondage and discipline and vilified by feminists, this metaphorical "love dream" (as Jaeckin has called it) follows the beautiful fashion photographer "O" (Corrine Clery) as she, like many gorgeously naked women before her, is "trained" for a seemingly satisfying life of love and discipline, her freedom sacrificed to the man (Anthony Steel) whom she willingly obeys. The debate whether Jaeckin's feminine-empowerment ending, which differs from that of the novella, justifies a story of humiliating submission is just one more reason why The Story of O endures. (Note: This DVD presents the 97-minute version of the film, edited by the director to improve pacing and not for purposes of censorship.) --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars No Star if it were possible.......2007-06-08

I was so disappointed by this purchase and this film. Being a fan of the book I was very excited to see how they translated it on to film. What I found out is that they didn't translate it at all. They LOOSELY followed the story line and took the liberty to add and change which in my opinion, changed the story all together. I threw this movie away and would not reccomend it to any true Story of O fan.

3 out of 5 stars A bit clumsy.......2007-05-15

Somehow, I was expecting better acting, knowing this would be a major undertaking based on a controversial book. Sadly, the film just doesn't work. There's no arguing Corrine Clery's beauty but Udo Kier is completely miscast.

2 out of 5 stars you're better off reading the book.......2007-04-04

The book is amazing; this movie adaptation is quite poor. Although the actress who plays O is quite beautiful, and there are some fairly erotic scenes, this movie is deeply flawed, and I can't recommend it. The plotline gets totally garbled, especially toward the end, to the point where it runs entirely contrary to the book's intention on several key philosophical and psychological points. Second, the actor who plays Stephen is absolutely one of the worst casting choices I've ever seen; doesn't fit the role one bit. So please, read the book. If you've already read the book and love it, it is probably worth your while to eventually see this film, but expect to be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Is this really what most "normal people" call erotic?.......2007-02-17

This is one of the most boring films I ever watched. There is nothing erotic in it. The whole story is perverted with a poor, innocent but very stupid woman submitting to the sadist fantasies of various "lovers" she is introduced. I put inverted comas in lovers because none of them have a single tender erotic moment with her, but instead they brutally beat her and rape her in the presence of others, who seem to be totally oblivious to the proceedings.

5 out of 5 stars Not dominant submissive but metaphor.......2007-02-15

I have not yet read the originating novel, but I have just finished watching this movie for the second time. I was renting it. Now I'm going to buy it - one of very few, as I almost never buy movies.

I must say that I found much more in it the second time. The first time not only did the physical and emotional whippings disturb me but, just as much, O's willing apparent debasement and her masters' disregard for her feelings - they only seemed to care about her obedience. This is an anti-turnon for me. The sex scenes are not really convincing, nor are the whippings. I realized that I, as audience, was not being asked to accept that much pain or that much pleasure from either.

The male characters are much more flat than the female ones, particularly O, as if they really didn't count. And there was something in this most beautiful woman's portrayal which left me thinking it wasn't at all simple.

Bottom line, it is abundantly clear that this is far, far more than an S&M movie, nor is it about bondage, submission and domination, or any other kind of sexual perversion or obsession.

Some phrases stuck out to me, although I'm not sure I'm quoting exactly accurately. The narrator said the O loved everything and everyone that came to her because it came to her by request from her lover. She said that O knew that if she lasted to the end that all would be given to her. O's apparent peace of mind about everything that happened to her simply didn't gybe with a debasement/submissive/sexual perversion sort of story. She definitely does not come across as sick. She, at times, was as deeply terrified or ashamed as any normal woman would be in the circumstances and yet continued freely to accept the demands of obedience to those who loved her and those who didn't. I was puzzled at how easily she accepted that Rene was no longer her lover, and continued to do exactly the same thing with Sir Stefan. All of this indicated that something much deeper than anything relatively superficial about perversion, infatuation, and so-on was going on. It made far too deep an impression the first time I saw the movie, even without understanding it. It made me think that it was, as another reviewer mentioned, hitting some archetypes, and something deep in the human spirit.

I began to think of the whole story as an extended metaphor about the demands and rewards of love. When we love, we willingly go through hell for the sake of love -- not just for the sake of the lover. The love relationship places heavy demands of obedience on us. It whips us and debases us -- love and its intimacy always find our weaknesses, and their exposure makes us feel naked, beaten and debased. But love always allows us the freedom to opt out, as did O's lovers and masters. And something deep within us always knows that, if we succumb to the abasement we may feel, and accept the beating our feelings take, that love, real human love, marks us forever as O was marked, and enbles us to love and be loved fully and deeply, and gives us peace -- indeed, it grants us everything. O shows us how wonderful it can become if we are not overly defensive about our selves in the service of love.

The movie itself does not look as dated as you would think for a 1974 movie -- actually, not at all. The color is a little unsaturated compared to the kind of color we have today, and this contributes to the fantasy that is clearly being spun. I happen to enjoy naked women a lot, and there are a lot of them in this movie, fully frontal, more than a glimpse, naked and unashamed. There are few scenes that are fully clothed for very long. I thought all were beautiful women, self-possessed, graceful, fully feminine and sensual without being affected.

The two brief closeup shots of "female genitalia", as one reviewer put it, (although he apparently didn't even notice them), are exquisitely done - just close enough, just long enough, just modest enough, just open enough.

There is a visual potpourri of modern day (for 1974), turn-of-the-century wealth and romanticism, and even some medieval castles and costumes. The only thing that bothered me even temporarily was Sir Stefan's overly-coiffed hairdo, but it didn't take long to get past it. It's a legitimate part of his character.

And the best comment of all came from my wife when the movie was over. And I hasten to add that there are absolutely no submissive or dominative tendencies in her at all. She said, "Wierd. Wow. That's one very sexy movie".

Back in the day when full-frontal nudity and soft-core eroticism were still part of the mainstream release strategy, Lady Chatterley's Lover made the rounds as a higher-toned slab of hubba-hubba. For this opus, Sylvia Kristel, the Dutch-born beauty who had bared all and gained a following in Emmanuelle, teamed up again with that film's director, Just Jaeckin,. Based on the once-scandalous D.H. Lawrence novel (and at least partly adapted by Marc Behm), Lady Chatterley casts Kristel as the wife of a paralyzed nobleman (former Hammer star Shane Briant). He can no longer make love to his sexy missus, and so gives his blessing to the idea of her having an affair--although the reality of the Lady getting it on with the manor's rough-hewn gamekeeper (Nicholas Clay) is not what he had in mind. The result is much closer to a bodice-ripping romance novel than to Lawrence (stick with Ken Russell's Women in Love for Lawrence erotica), and the sex scenes have the customary tropes of crackling fire and dancing in the rain. The sheer dullness of the production might be the price one must pay for getting to the hot parts, of which there are plenty. --Robert Horton

Description

Paralyzed from the waist down due to a war injury, Sir Clifford Chatterley (Shane Briant) urges his wife, Constance (Sylvia Kristel), to take a lover to satisfy her physical needs. But when she begins an intense affair with a man of shockingly lower class the virile and rugged gamekeeper Mellors (Nicholas Clay) the unexpected stirring of passions will rock not only their marriage, but all of society as well.

what a dog of a movie,if someone is looking for a better movie version of this story buy the new (1992) or later americanized version

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Adaptation .......2007-04-05

I think this adaptation of Lady Chatterley's Lover is lacking in so many ways. The actors are mediocre at best. Roles like Hilda miscast. Nothing against the actress in this role but she seems old enough to be Connie's mother rather than sister. And I rather wanted to tell the gamekeeper to keep his clothes on. Additionally, there doesn't seem to capture the passion and quiet desperation of the characters. If one wants to see a good film as well as a film that's faithful to the spirit of Lady Chatterley's Lover...This is not it.

surprised this movie was not rated M for mature audiences.

3 out of 5 stars Bastardized the social theme of DH Lawrence.......2006-04-14

DH Lawrence nearly ruined his career when this book was published. There were so many shocking social themes and commentaries inherent in the story. Sadly, the film version played up the affair and it resulted in a soft-core nearly X-rated motion picture. Perhaps it is time for a remake that is truer to what DH Lawrence wanted to say about the folly of love and desire.

The Three Masters Of International Erotica Come Together For One Provocative Collection... Uncut And Uncensored For The First Time Ever In America!

For legendary producer Pierre Braunberger (SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER), it was the most enticing of challenges: Invite the three most controversial directors in modern erotic cinema to indulge their fantasies in one daring film. The result remains one of the most uniquely sensual motion pictures of our time.

In the first story from director Just Jaeckin (EMMANUELLE, GWENDOLINE), a castaway sailor is rescued by a tribe of succulent native women - led by the stunning Laura Gemser of BLACK EMANUELLE fame - who soon reveal their most unusual appetites. Then director Shuji Terayama (FRUITS OF PASSION) explores the haunting tale of a Japanese boy seduced by the riddle song of a village madwoman. And in the bold adaptation of a short story by De Maupassant, director Walerian Borowczyk (IMMORAL WOMEN, THE BEAST) reveals the torrid liaison between a Parisian gentleman, a Follie Bergere prostitute and an unexpected surprise that hides in the night.

The title suggests some God-awful, trying-too-hard sex farce, but Relax... It's Just Sex! is a surprisingly layered comedy that takes some serious and compelling emotional turns. Jennifer Tilly (Bound, Bullets over Broadway) plays Tara, a straight woman who's something of a den mother to a circle of friends, most of whom are gay or lesbian. While she tries to get pregnant with her new boyfriend, her friend Vincey (Mitchell Anderson) finally meets a guy he likes, an artist named Buzz (T.C. Carson), only to bring him to a dinner party where Buzz hooks up with Javi (Eddie Garcia), who has recently discovered that he's HIV positive. Meanwhile, Sarina (Cynda Williams from One False Move) has just learned that her lover, Megan, has slept with a man and runs into the arms of Robin (Lori Petty, Tank Girl, A League of Their Own). The movie takes story lines that could have been soap-opera clichés and rescues them with clever but realistic dialogue and strong, surprising performances. Over the course of the film the characters grow increasingly genuine, giving some of the twists in their lives an unexpected emotional impact. Relax... It's Just Sex! didn't get much of a release in theaters, perhaps because it's a sympathetic, realistic portrayal of gay men and lesbians, including some graphic sex. The transfer from film to video has marred the cinematography, giving the film a somewhat fuzzy image, but don't let that put you off from this refreshing, funny, and moving film. --Bret Fetzer

The movie touched on some serious issues, but did it in a way that you could still laugh. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Awsome gem.......2004-08-04

This is one of my favorite movies ever. It's hillaroius with lots of heart. It's one of those films where you acually laugh and cry during it. All of the actors ( Jennifer Tilly, Mitchel Anderson, Lori Petty, "T.C", Cynda Williams, and Serena Scott Thomas in particualar) turn in great performances. The movie is about a group of friends ( who just happen to mostly be gay and lesbian) try to deal with life, death, and hard ships. I f you want more indepth descrption of it go to the other dvd edition's reviews. But I deffinetly recomend you buy this edition. Other then a great movie there is a witty, funny commentary track by Lori Petty, Jennifer Tilly and the producer Steven Wolf. I was laughing out loud with some stories and comments they had about the making of the film and there experiences in sundance. Plus I believe the two of them were the standouts of the cast so it was even more enjoyable. There are also some deleted scenes and some bloopers ( very scarce) but better then nothing. Overall it's a very good dvd and I'd buy it anyway just for the greatness of the movie. For movie with a 250,000 budget ( seriously) it deserves top honorr. Good for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars MADE IN AMERICA.......2004-06-14

What a pleasant surprise! Honestly, I have had the feeling for many years that a move like "Relax, It's just Sex" would never be made here in America. This movie is about a group of very intriguing good friends comprising of both gay and straight characters where, for once being gay is NOT the problem. It is not a "coming out" or a "is he or is she gay?" film; everyone is very comfortable with his or her sexuality to the point that they are able to be very supportive of each other no matter what is going on in a particular person's life at any particular moment.

There are many very funny moments intermingled with "real life" serious situations, which are dealt with--including love, HIV infection, commitments, a miss-carriage, and a "gay bashing". The "gay bashing" for me, really hit home. For once, in this movie, the "victim" had opportunity to get immediate revenge and did so to the shock and horror of his friends who had problems dealing with his anger and his execution of revenge on one of the bashers. (In all honestly if given the opportunity to get revenge on a "gay bashing" punk, I think that I would take advantage of that opportunity as the character, in the film, did!)

All of the actors in the film are great with Jennifer Tilly giving, to me, an Oscar winning performance-she's hysterically funny at one moment and "heart breaking" the next moment. I just wish I had a group of friends as portrayed in this movie.

If you are into good films, buy this DVD

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Movie.......2004-01-30

I ran into this movie while channel-surfing on TV. The introduction drew me in -- I couldn't figure out what they were doing with the people on a rotating stage in black and white and the corny 60's sounding announcer -- then suddenly the storyline went full-throttle into what could be some modern-day relationships in America. The movie not only focussed on intimate relationships between lovers but the strong bond between friends. I laughed and cried, was shocked and amazed, and thoroughly immersed throughout the entire movie. I saw the movie a few more times on cable, then have rented it a few times to show other friends who have never heard of it. Everyone loves it so I'm going to add it to my DVD collection to save having to rent it again! I highly recommend it to anyone who has an open mind, who loves great dialogue, and who actually enjoys a good story in their movie.

3 out of 5 stars ok.......2004-01-01

This movie definetly had a different plot then all the other gay films out there. A Gay man takes revenge on what the straights have been doing to him.. The scene is shocking and his friends plead with him but he doesn't stop and you feel sorry for him and the abused .. then he disappears. What happens next ? Go and see for yourself.

Oh yes, reminds me of my youth, reading those 8 pagers and Playboy. This is one of my favorites. Ryan is outstanding. I wonder what else he has done. I was expecting a PORKYS type movie, but was surprised by the quality and realism. Usually I don't like profanity, but it is absolutely required in this movie. I was thinking. Ryan was asked by another male kid to join a sex club. The only other members were two girls. I don't know about you, but if I was the other kid, why would I want another male to move in on the two girls. Two females and me: that's my kind of sex club!

5 out of 5 stars GRETCHEN MOL WOW!.......2004-12-11

It is an great coming-of-age film by Jason Alexander. It reminded me of growing up in the same era and having an unrequieted crush on a knock-down-gorgeous model 10 years my senior. Alexander handled the perinnial exploration of sexuality by budding teenagers with humor, sensitivity and a wise director's tongue-planted-firmly-in-cheek. If you can find it just seeing Gretchen Mol in capri pants and less is worth whatever price you pay for it. Also the color was excellent. If you cannot find it and have DISH or cable sometimes it comes up on the Independent Film Channel, sans commercials.

5 out of 5 stars very trouching movie.......2002-12-26

like other reviews have said, i caught this while skimming through the movie channels. unfortunately, i didn't get to see the beginning - i just caught on that the movie was about this kid wanting to know about sex. that just sparked my attention, but the story line of the movie itself drew me in.
it's a wonderful movie with great acting, especially for the part of lenny. the movie touches on some subjects that some people could consider "disturbing", but we all know thats a part of life and part of learning about the birds and the bees. some aspects just take you by surprise.
definately would keep true to the guidelines of the R rating, though. if youre past youre awkward pubity years, this movie will definately take you back to how you were feeling back then.

5 out of 5 stars This is a funny movie....about family, new beginings and sex.......2002-08-29

I first saw this movie when i saw skimming thru the movie channels bored out of mind when I came across the movie Just looking starring Ryan Merriman who plays the title role lenny and what surprised me it's directed by jason alexander. I am glad i watched it. from beginning to end i was giggling and laughing.
This movie is set in the 50's. It's about lenny a 14 kid who has alot of questions about the opposite sex you know the normal stuff kissing, love, marriage but who am i kidding he's a kid in america he's curious about sex! But don't let me turn you off of this movie this is a heartwarming film as well it touches on subjects as sex and the difficulties of married life and family.
But all in all this movie a great and funny film and a movie i think anyone will enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Charming coming of age film? I think not........2002-05-12

The first ten minutes of "Just Looking" really dictates the direction most of this movie takes. Lenny (Ryan Merriman) is a 14 year old boy living in New York in the '50s. He has a burning desire to see two people have sex. Who are the best people he has in mind? Well, his own mom and stepfather of course! How pleasant. Unfortunately for Lenny, he is caught before he sees anything and is sent away for the summer to stay with his uncle and his uncle's wife.

Lenny's next plan is to see his uncle and his wife have sex. However, the wife is quite pregnant and they aren't currently sleeping together. Then Lenny makes a new friend. Him and his buddy spend most of their free time hanging around a couple of girls. They have a little club where all they do is sit around and talk about sex. The problem is...it's not done in an innocent, charming 1950's sort of way. I am no prude by ANY means, but I found it rather disturbing listening to these kids talk about stuff which I am not even allowed to repeat here due to Amazon's guidelines. It may work in a movie like "Kids" (1995) but in this film it just seems perverted.

Gretchen Mol is utterly wasted here as Hedy, a former bra model who becomes the object of Lenny's carnal desires. Jason Alexander needs to stay as far away from the director's chair as possible. "For Better Or Worse" (1996) was awful and now this. What a waste.

4 out of 5 stars The Experience of Love.......2007-02-27

EMMANUELLE is an elegant and subtly told tale of eroticism. Sylvia Kristel as Emmanuelle is quite alluring. The simple story revolves around carnal satisfaction and romantic interludes that enhance the experience of love. Exquisitely photographed by cinematographer by Richard Suzuki and scored in a lushly contemporary style by Pierre Bachelet this film is quite memorable.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Film, better than what you can find now days.......2005-04-30

An Adult, not rated, film

This is the first film in a trilogy (there are actually some other films that followed, just like Asimov's Foundation "Trilogy" ended up being more than three books) that stars Sylvia Kristel as Emmanuelle and spawned a large number of copy-cats (most of which go by the name Emanuelle). This particular film is based on Emmanuelle Arsan's 1957 book "Emmanuelle." This film also stars Alain Cuny, and Marika Green and co-starred Daniel Sarky, Jeannie Colletin, and Christine Boisson. The film's director, Just Jacekin, also directed "The Story of O."

This is a film about a couple in an open marriage living in Bangkok, the husband is a diplomat. The film opens with Emmanuelle in Paris getting ready to head off to join her husband in Bangkok for the first time. Once she arrives, she is introduced to the Bangkok culture and the Europeans living there (and their loose ways).

There are numerous interesting scenes, like: when the Thai butler chases after one of the maids and "mauls" her; when the Europeans living in Bangkok gather together and socialize next to a pool, and one of the woman flirt with Emmanuelle (some top-less, some completely nude, like Emmanuelle, extended scene of her and another woman swimming nude underwater); the scene when one of the women from the pool party shows up and touches Emmanuelle while she is sleeping, and then later, top-less, they talk on the porch and both pleasure themselves (Emmanuelle: as she recalls her activities aboard the plane on the trip to Bangkok where a man just walked up to her and started fondling her and more right there in the open and others, separately, joined in the fun); the lesbian scene at the racquetball club; then the numerous scenes with the female Bee and Emmanuelle traveling in Thailand; another scene at the athletic club, this one in the locker room; then the numerous scenes where Emmanuelle is under the control of an older man who forces her to do things she might not particularly like with various strange men, and some things which are definitely rape.

Red-headed Emmanuelle is something of an experienced yet naive girl in this first film in the trilogy, until she is lead into "eroticism" by an older man (that older man's lessons: love between couple's should be outlawed, every act should include three people). In this film there are scenes seen through the point of view of Emmanuelle and some through the POV of her husband.

An interesting little film that seems to be of a higher quality than you might find now-days, but still seems to be nothing more than an excuse to jump from one "adult" scene to another, with some non-adult scenes in-between.

Interesting little trailer, notes that the French president banned it forever, until a new government "set it free." Oddly enough, until I watched it again for review, I thought this had been a better movie than I now think of it. (4.10)

4 out of 5 stars Still an enjoyable one.......2004-10-14

This is the first of the three original Emmanuelle movies, the ones starring Sylvia Kristel. There were lots of imitators, most ranging from bad to worse and beyond. At the time of the first Emmanuelle, though none of that had yet happened - please hold that happy thought. Perhaps those three weren't high art, but they're generally good entertainment for adults.

Back in the 70s, this was a groundbreaking movie. It was openly erotic, and openly meant for the general public. I'll leave the social commentary to others. For me, it's just a beautiful movie. It's set in beautiful tropical locations. It stars beautiful actresses, back before implants were part of the uniform. Most of all, it shows beautiful (if artificial) exchanges of physical affection between Emmanuelle and just about everyone, man and woman.

Still, there were a few things about this movie that I didn't care for. It usually depicts Emmanuelle as a passive figure, to be led and acted upon. I prefer the stronger character in the sequel. Later parts of the movie depict coercion, something I really don't care for. The haughty poseur at the end was annoying, but distantly true to the book. Still, book's fans shouldn't get their hopes up. This movie is its own creature, and pleasant enough if taken on its own terms.

4 out of 5 stars CLASSIC SOFT-CORE PORN.......2004-04-28

REALLY, THERE IS VERY LITTLE PLOT TO FIND IN THIS FRENCH-MADE SOFT-CORE PORN FLICK. BUT, THERE ARE PLENTY OF HOT SEX SCENES TO SPARE IN THIS CLASSIC PORNO FLICK. IT'S BASICALLY ABOUT A YOUNG WOMAN [SYLVIA KRISTEL] WHO JUST ENCOUNTERS SEX EVERYWHERE SHE GOES, WHETHER IT BE WITH MEN OR WOMEN. SURE, THE ACTING AIN'T GOOD, AND SURE, IT'S VERY SHORT ON PLOT, BUT THEN AGAIN, ALMOST ALL PORNO MOVIES ARE SHORT ON PLOT. THIS HAS BEAUTIFULLY FILMED SEX SCENES AND IT HAS AN EXCELLENT THREESOME FOR AN ENDING. WHETHER YOU'RE A YOUNG OR OLD FAN OF SOFT-CORE OR EVEN HARD-CORE PORN, THEN GET THIS NOW. THE FILM COULD'VE USED BETTER DUBBING. FOLLOWED BY A NUMBER OF SEQUELS.

4 out of 5 stars Hot softcore.......2003-09-12

This is older softcore, and doesn't show as much as some of what is out today. Also, it attempts to have a storyline, so the sex scenes are spread out more than some of the modern softcore. However, this movie is very hot. Three or four of the action scenes really worked for me, while the remaining scenes ranged from pretty good to weak.

The storyline itself is weak, in my opinion, as it revolves around people who are trying to out-do each other when it comes to having sex. The philosophical mumbo-jumbo the film spouts is rubbish, and is used to justify the betrayal/rape that occurs about 3/4ths of the way through the movie.

My favorite scene is a scene near the start, where Sylvia and a young lady visitor are sitting on a porch, and the visitor unzips her shorts, sticks her hand down, and brings herself off. She never takes her shorts off, so your view of the action is not as good as it would be in one of today's films, but the scene was still very hot, with Sylvia looking a bit shocked as she watched the young almost-stranger going at it.

This is the sort of "emotional overtone" that gives it more erotic energy, and is what makes this movie better than most softcore films that have wall-to-wall action scenes, full nudity, etc., but no energy, excitement, or emotion.

I give the film only 4 stars because of the two "forced/rape" scenes. To be honest, I do like scenes where the girl starts off saying "no" but winds up saying, or means, "yes." My problem with the scenes from Emmanuelle (especially the "main" one) is that the girl was still saying "no" at the end, and appeared to really mean "no"--although the storyline indicates otherwise. I found that to be a real turn-off.

This sweet comedy of sexual confusion begins with Anthony (Lane Janger), a New York City fireman who's madly in love with his fiancée Amy (Joelle Carter), but who can't shake his fantasy of seeing Amy being sexually intimate with another woman. With their wedding looming over them, Amy finally agrees to play along--but only if Anthony will do the same for her. Reluctantly, Anthony agrees to go out on a date with their young gay neighbor Victor (Guillermo Diaz). Anthony brings his fellow firemen along for safety, only they end up having more fun than he does. Meanwhile, Amy starts spending time with Michelle (Jennifer Esposito), a lesbian woodworker, and starts getting a little more comfortable with the idea than Anthony ever expected. What makes Just One Time stand out is the respect it gives its characters. Each is a well-written, fully realized individual, not merely a plot device. The story is unpredictable and gently funny. Though the dialogue is often clever, much more humor is found in body language--the myriad ways that people communicate things they're afraid to say out loud. It doesn't hurt that the entire cast is extremely sexy and wears skimpy outfits in the hot New York summer. Esposito is particularly charming. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars More fun than I remember.......2006-11-14

I rented this film again on a whim; I didn't love it the first time, but seemed interested in seeing it again. It has a couple good actors/actresses in it: Jennifer Esposito and Guillermo Diaz.

I really liked it this time. I think during the second "viewing," I'd gotten over the sorta silly premise: that the straight man wanted to have a tryst with his fiance and another woman prior to their wedding, and this was a sufficiently big problem for man and woman that they spend the bulk of their time, for the week or so before the wedding, trying to resolve it.

This is not a gay-and-lesbian movie, per se, as the main characters are straight, but there are some important and well-sketched secondary characters that are glb and that contribute to the story in sometimes surprising ways. There are some laughs and some decent moments here.

Basically, this isn't a classic, but it is fun, and is interesting as the folks in this film try to resolve their doubts and issues (and prejudices) with each other and within themselves.

Plus the production values are decent here, and the whole film is put together pretty well. I'd give it a chance.

1 out of 5 stars Should Be Renamed: One Narcissistic Time...or...One Big Yawn!.......2005-12-19

Sorry, call me old fashioned, but I like to care about a story's characters! This movie, with the feel of a moronic T.V. sitcom, is simply dull as mud. I could not feel the slightest bit of rapport with anyone! It's a juvenile storyline, but not the least bit funny. One can only hope people this dopey only exist in the writer's imagination!

In case anyone is wondering, the word "Narcissistic" means: egotistical, selfish, self-centered and that exactly describes the main character. There's more than enough narcissism in the world! I don't need to watch it on the tube, too!

4 out of 5 stars Commentary track? Why bother?.......2005-03-28

This is a harmless enough bit of fantasy. I actually like that the main, straight character is played - very convincingly - by an openly gay man. (I actually had no idea that Lane Janger was gay until I read an interview after the release of the film.) It's a good rental, maybe an interesting subject for a date night when you're getting to know someone.

Now, I have the DVD which includes a commentary track with Lane Janger and Guillermo Diaz. They keep the movie soundtrack way too loud to hear the commentary and Janger is barely audible at times, as if his microphone fell off. Or maybe he's just mumbling. But this may not be a bad thing since this is one of the most boring, unrevealing commentaries I've ever heard on a DVD. You'd think the writer/director/star would have some things to say about his own film but half the time it feels like Diaz is prompting him to talk about an actor or a scene. And there are huge stretches of silence. There should have been a moderator on this one.

Still, that may not bother other viewers. It's a cute movie worth checking out. Recommended to any women dating men who want them to get involved in a 3-way.

3 out of 5 stars Ah, the Frailty of Manhood!.......2002-07-03

There are times that Lane Janger (writer, director and lead of this film) looks terrific when captured at the right angle, and other times that he looks tired and ragged around the edges. The same could be said for his film. There is potential here, and it shines through occasionally, but unfortunately not consistently.

Despite the fact that the ultimate effect is cute (isn't that a terrible word to describe a film?!) and charming, I found myself scratching my head once or twice about the basic premise of this sometimes enchanting little ditty. I guess Janger is trying to warn us that no fantasy lives up to the reality. OK...an age-old piece of wisdom...no arguments here, BUT he never REALLY lets his two lead characters experience their fantasies. They just seem to get lost and frustrated on the road leading up to it.

Anthony (Janger's character) wants to see his beloved fiancée, Amy (played by a very winning Jennifer Esposito), have sex Just One Time with another woman before they get married and HAVE to put their fantasies to bed. That's where the first question arises: why do married couples have to stop having fantasies? OK, small detail, let's move on...

Amy does not want to grant her beloved Anthony his somewhat cliché, pubescent, masturbatory fantasy, and tries to get around the problem by one-upping him: if he has sex with a man for her, she'll give herself to a woman for him. Now pride and egos start getting in the way of anyone calling the nonsense off. Enter Guillermo Diaz: your ... excuse for a romantic comedy's gay sidekick. Not to say thatMr. Diaz plays his role poorly; he's actually adorable! That said, his role is no more than a convenient plot devise: the sweet, non-threatening, virginal gay neighbor, who enters on cue, but never causes too much discomfort, either for Anthony or the viewer. Same goes for the conveniently lesbian neighbor played by Joelle Carter, who is planted there to give Amy her brush withhomosexuality.

Whereas Amy at least gets a lesbian kiss of free will out of it all, before she throw up her hands and screams, "bring on the bands and ring the wedding bells", Anthony stays annoyingly heterosexual. Oh, he does have a kiss, but it's aggressive and full of anger and frustration. When he wakes up the next morning next to his token gay friend, he's horrified at the idea that something might have transpired. Thank God, his bedmate is able to clear that fright up within 30 seconds!

Actually, a rather insulting bit of tripe, but if we more emotionally self-assured and mature homosexuals are generous enough to forgive heterosexual men their occasional lapses of taste and decorum for the sake of defending their obviously fragile manhood, then you might actually enjoy the 94 minutes that this film has to offer.

2 out of 5 stars Even an elephant could forget this one.......2002-06-28

The writer and director also takes the lead role... a recipe for disaster. The story idea is a good one that could possibly lead to comedy, but it hasn't worked too well here.

If you're a fan of Jennifer Esposito, be warned that she has a very minor role in this movie.

Worth a bowl of popcorn on a night you'd rather forget the madness of the world and watch people like your friends hurtle the silly/sweet challenges of social foreplay and that damn mating urge. If only I didn't HAVE TO HAVE IT!

    2 out of 5 stars Harmless Fun.......2004-04-23

Those who like shows like "Sex and the City" will certainly enjoy this romantic comedy about a group of hip friends in their late twenties. Their problems are essentially trying (and mostly failing) to find a sex partner and eventually a loved one. Infidelity, friendship, maturity and life choices are some of the subjects present in this little movie, providing a couple of laughs but not many memorable scenes. The acting is competent, the pacing is ok, but the plot and direction are nothing to write home about. All in all, a watchable flick and an entertaining enough one, even if it doesn`t rise above average material.

    Good to watch once.

5 out of 5 stars Just a little harmless fun.......2004-04-11

Here is a film that pokes fun at both men & women, taking full advantage of every stereotype imaginable. In short, it does precisely what a light Romantic comedy is supposed to do! It's a whole lot of harmless fun along the way, too.

The plotline centers around the age-old problem of the straying husband. In this case, however, the fellow does not have a pre-meditated inclination to cheat on his wife. Rather, he picks up a stranded motorist (who somehow ends up being a courtesan) and gets caught by what seems to be an anti-prostitute SWAT team. And, his luck seems to go from bad to worse from there!

After his wife & her friends & her mother find out, the poor fellow begins his penance and all of the typical human rituals of attempting to get her to take him back. Thanks to his two buddies, the whole situation is put in the most zany perspective imaginable!

The film is almost a real-time movie as 90% of it takes place in a bar. One would think that the one-setting-framework would tend to get tedious, but there are enough twists & turns in the storyline to keep the viewer interested.

As is so often the case these days, you get the typical plain Jane knockout (capably played by Kimberly Williams). However, I could tell from the get-go that she was no plain Jane, no matter how much they tried to make her look like a geek.

If you want a light-hearted look at the serious issue of infidelity, this one would appear to be a clear-cut winner. Or, if you're simply in the market for another Romantic Comedy & good fun, you can do a whole lot worse than a little harmless sex.

    4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining!.......2001-08-01

I watched this movie the other night and out of 4 that I had rented over the weekend (Whatever, the Dead Zone and War Zone) this one is the one that I enjoyed the most (with Whatever being a worthy second). I just really enjoyed the cast (all very eclectic unknowns) and the storyline, which was lighthearted and funny. I rented it having never heard of it before, but went with the "two thumbs up" stamp of approval that I generally agree with and this was no exception! I don't know if I'd give it a 5 star, but it's certainly better than average and better than most of the [types] that comes out these days.

3 out of 5 stars good acting, terrible story.......2001-03-25

though the actors are well casts, the movie just doesn't really work. The film is so dark from the beginning (look wise I mean) it is hard to watch. Also, even though this was a low budget indie, that doesn't make up for sloppy film making. Though Rachel Hunter has no purpose in this film and they shouldn't waste money on hiring her for that little cameo (could have spent money to reshot the scene when you can see the camera guy) the rest of the cast is great, especially Jonathan Silverman and Jessica Lundy as the sarcastic divorced couple who broke up over a magor misunder standing. Watch Silverman as he confesses his dirty little secret

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2007-02-11
