This program by Irish tenor John McDermott (a well-sung and expertly produced show) was taped in Canada not long after September 11, 2001. Though the atrocity of that day is never mentioned explicitly, the feeling of loss and nostalgia, and the haunting shadow of what has been and what might have been are beautifully reflected, beginning with the opening number, "Try to Remember."

A militant flavor appears in "Scotland the Brave" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." War and nostalgia are blended in "Christmas in the Trenches," a story song about the first Christmas of World War I when English and German soldiers suspended hostilities to sing carols together. There is nostalgia without war in "Danny Boy" and "The Old Man." McDermott's facial expressions, dancers, a children's chorus, Scottish scenes, and actors miming "Christmas in the Trenches" all make a strong case for video recording. Added documentary features are excellent. --Joe McLellan

4 out of 5 stars Let's really correct the record.......2007-01-28

Lads and lassies, what we need to correct are the erroneous details from the well-intentioned reviewer below. In general, he's right: McDermott was born a Scot in Glasgow. In fact his mother's family -- which came originally not from Dublin but from Ballymeena, near Belfast, in Northern Ireland -- had been in Scotland for several generations before John was born. But his father emigrated to Scotland from Bunnygee in Donegal, in Ulster but a part of the Republic. So by heritage on both sides McDermott is definitely Irish.

Besides, Irish and Scots are the same tribe anyway, speaking basically the same language and sharing centuries of history. The Romans' name for the Irish was "Scoti," after all, and that Irish treasure, the Book of Kells, was probably begun on the Scottish isle of Iona. So why quibble?

And yes, the voice is bonny.

Lads and Lassies....the truth be told, John McDermott hangs his "Irish" on his mother being a native of Dublin. However, her husband was Scottish, and John was born in Glasgow and the family lived there until moving to Canada...as far as I know, this Scot never lived in Ireland... he does have a bonnie voice, doesn't he?

    5 out of 5 stars ENTHRALLING.......2003-08-11

You'll love this dvd as there is something for everyone. There are songs to reminds of of the ole times, songs that bring joy and sadness to your heart. The young and old, with John, will give you an evening you'll never forget. I have the cassette,cd,video and dvd of this, so I highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Heart-felt Music.......2002-08-31

John McDermott is someone you'd be proud to know, and this DVD shows why. The music, the interviews, the clips all reveal a real person who loves his family, his friends, his countries (!) and unabashedly revels in the music that celebrates the finer things of life. In the concert portion, John presents a number of his standards (The Old Man, Christmas in the Trenches, Danny Boy) with honest emotion. His selections (Here You Are, When I Grow Too Old to Dream, Ottawa stepdancing medley) featuring other performers such as Alison Girvan, Chandra Gibson and Pulse, and John's goddaughter Hannah Kenney are all first-rate presentations of talent. It is very refreshing to see children performing as children (not as vapid copies of socalled "stars") in delightfully straightforward style in Crazy Mary.
The special feature I most enjoyed, however, was the clip of John singing "Legacy" at the award dinner for the Congressional Medal of Honor winners. If it was in my power, I'd send that clip to every tv station in America with strict instructions to play it right alongside the national anthem. The message that "we won't forget those who served" cannot be overemphasized. If you can buy only DVD this year, this is the one you should get.

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for Next Year's John McDermott Concert on PBS.......2002-07-27

I really enjoyed this video, I have seen it five times.already. There are so many songs that I love to hear John sing -- Battle Hymn of the Republic, Crazy Mary, I'll Be Seeing You, Danny Boy and, of course, The Old Man" -- everyone's favorite.

I well intend to attend the Richmond concert in Nov. 2003, be the Good Lord Willing.

I am and will always be a true John McDermott fan.

My husband is a jazz fan, but I'll drag him all the way from Washington,, D.C. to Richmond to hear this super Irish Tenor just one more time.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly Boring Communist propoganda.......2006-05-08

The outside of the dvd case promises a lush, romantic movie, beautifully photographed and mesmerizing. Except for the photography, the rest is a lie.

The story follows an American doctor in occupied Shanghai in the mid 1930's. He is begged by a desperate woman to treat her husband who is suffering from old battle wounds. The wounded man turns out to be a wanted Communist leader and the doctor falls in love with his "fake" wife. In the meantime the Nationalists are on the hunt for Communists which puts the doctor, and his new friends, in a real tight spot.

Sounds exciting, right? There is no doubt that the cinematography is quite good and the shots of 1930's Shanghai are exceptional.
The rest of the film however is very, very boring.

The Doctor has all the enthusiasm and emotion of a wet paper bag. Leslie Cheung is believable as the love interest but her motivations make no sense. One minute she thinks she loves the doctor, the next she wants to love our wounded hero for the love of Communist ideology.

Put all this together with the lead Chinese characters ranting on about the romance of being communist and having little children awestruck in admiration by parades of Maoists make the movie nothing more than propoganda.

On a side note, the subtitles are bad. Words are left out in English, the grammar is awful and there are misspellings. It doesn't detract from the movie....however it is embarrassing.

Despite what the box looks like and the wording on the package, dont believe it.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful, except for Cheung and Mei Ting.......2004-12-04

I approached this film hoping to find another Chinese gem of the type produced by Zhang, Chen, and Wong. No such luck. This is a morally distasteful, cheap melodrama.

As usual, Leslie Cheung is a commanding presence, and Mei Ting redeems herself. But one doesn't have to have sympathy with the hideous Chinese Nationalists to be offended at the film's glorification of the "romantic" communists. Viewers are expected to stomach the depiction of these mass murderers as the manifestation of a valiant dream worthy of heroic sacrifice. One would have hoped that the magnificent Leslie Cheung of Farewell My Concubine would have walked away from this moral spitoon; the "romantic" Reds held homosexuals in even greater contempt than they did the millions of others they slaughtered.

It is difficult to imagine a contemporary film by a German director -- or one of another nationality -- that even hinted at the "romantic" aspects of Naziism the way this one does with its brutal red sibling.
