Some critics complained that City of Angels could never compare to Wim Wenders's exquisite German film Wings of Desire, which served as the later film's primary inspiration. The better argument to make is that any such comparisons are beside the point, because Wings of Desire was a much more deeply poetic, artfully contemplative film, whereas City of Angels is an enchanting product of mainstream Hollywood. Meg Ryan stars as Dr. Maggie Rice, a heart surgeon who is grieving over a lost patient when an angel named Seth (Nicolas Cage) appears to comfort her. She can see him despite the "rule" that angels are invisible, and Seth's love for Maggie forces him to choose between angelic immortality and a normal human existence on earth with her. Featuring heavenly roles for TV veterans Andre Braugher and Dennis Franz, the film liberally borrows imagery from Wings of Desire, but it also creates its own charming identity. Cage and Ryan give fine performances as lovers convinced they are soul mates, and although the plot relies on a last-minute twist that doesn't quite work, this earnest love story struck a chord with audiences and proved to be one of the surprise hits of 1998. The Special Edition widescreen DVD includes audio commentary by Nicolas Cage, producer Charles Roven, and director Brad Silberling in addition to deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary, a featurette about the film's special effects, and the theatrical trailer. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Wings of Desire is better by far.......2007-05-16

"Wings of Desire" (the movie that "City of Angels" is loosely inspired upon), is a masterpiece and "City of Angels" is...is... how could I explain it not being too rude? It is just a piece of junk in comparison. Somebody wrote that he didn't like "Wings of Desire" because he didn't feel the same as he felt watching "City of Angels". I agree in the "feeling" part, because I felt nausea watching "City of Angels" and that didn't happen to me watching "Wings of Desire"!! I own "Wings of Desire" and have seen it and enjoyed it many times. Regarding "City of Angels", well I rented it and barely could see it once!

2 out of 5 stars The Original Is Better.......2007-05-13

Back in 1988, on a friend's recommendation, I saw "Wings of Desire" in the theater and loved it. Subsequently, I was interested when Hollywood made its own version of Wim Wender's film with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan, both actors whose work I've enjoyed. I saw "City of Angels," and for the most part I liked it -- that is, until the very end. What a DOWNER!! No matter that the movie gets all psedo-warmfuzzy-philosophical and time-to-get-out-your-handkerchiefs, it misses the point of the original film, which was a celebration of Human Life and Love. I own the DVD of "Wings of Desire." One viewing of "City of Angels" was enough for me.

this is a great movie, a must have. Beautiful music. Two wonderful actors with very expressive eyes. upgrade to DVD

Kudos to the home-video exec who came up with the "Presents..." prefix to keep a movie franchise going, even though it has almost no relation to the entries that came before. This is number five in the series that started with American Pie, an unexpected hit of a teen sex romp that kept the box office and DVD grosses (not to mention gross-outs) coming. The last entry, American Pie Presents: Band Camp, was the first non-theatrical release, which gave the filmmakers more "anything goes" freedom in the "unrated" department than ever. The Naked Mile kicks it up another notch with more gratuitous female nudity, bodily fluid flinging, and sexual overtones than anyone thought could be topped. Pubescent boys and those with minds forever stuck in that dimension, get ready to ogle babes and roar at puerile humor like you never have before. The only American Pie connections are in the form of the Stifler family, filled with a never-ending string of sex-crazed high school and college boys, and Eugene Levy as family friend Mr. Levenstein, who pops in for a (presumably) hefty paycheck and a couple of lines of sexual wisdom about the connection between promiscuity and growing up. Our hero, Erik Stifler, is on a weekend vacation at the local college where his cousin knows all the hot babes. He's in possession of a "free pass" from his virginal girlfriend to lose his own virginity. His visit just happens to coincide with the college's traditional Naked Mile run, an excuse to fill the screen with raw young flesh and stupid drunken frat kids engaging in silly sexual deviance that some people may find funny. And let's face it, if they're going to find the nudity and sordid sex play offensive, they're not going to have this DVD in their hands. All ends as it should: Erik finds true sex--ahem, love--with his girlfriend and everyone else finds it with whoever is handy. Mostly importantly, the cycle is left open with everything ripe for another sure-to-be classic in the American Pie Presents series. --Ted Fry

Filled with smokin' hot girls and the insane Stifler antics you know and love, this slice of American Pie delivers shocking and heartwarming fun all the way to the finish line.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Naked Mile was a pretty good marathon.......2007-05-01

I saw Band Camp a while back, and was extremely disappointed. It was just lame lame lame. When this one came out, I thought I would give it a try just because it couldn't get much worse than Band Camp. I was pleasently surprised that it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, and is actually pretty good.

Once again we meet a Stiffler. This Stiffler is a somewhat awkward one, not living up to his family reputation of obnoxious and deviant behavior. He is looking to live up to his family name, and when he is given a weekend pass by his girlfriend, he and his equally awkward buddies (in reminiscence of the original Pie triology) go off for a weekend at his cousin Stiffler's college. The hilarity ensues, as they are going to take part in the Naked Mile streaking, binge drinking, and all the other accoutraments of college life.

Why not 5 stars? They played on some pretty obvious things, like the midget football, the underwear party, and the girls with weird fetishes. And didn't you know from the beginning that college Stiffler would bang his rival's girlfriend even though she was a midget? The good Stiffler realizes that he doesn't want to run wild, he just wants to be with his girlfriend at home. And at long last they get together. A little predictable, but still a pretty good time.

1 out of 5 stars American Pie: The New Lampoon.......2007-04-15

Is it just me or is American Pie becoming another National Lampoon type thing where they just create a bunch of weak, strait to DVD movies that are trying to sale based on the American Pie franchize name? About as lame as the Dukes of Hazzard sequal, Dumb & Dumberer, and the numerous Disney movies comin' out with strait to DVD release sequals to movies made like 50 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars I actually thought it was sweet.......2007-03-04

Not in that way sweet, of course. the fact that he rode a horse to her and stayed together and wont let sex come in between them. I actually want a boyfriend like that. Good movie. Eventhough it has strong sexual content in it, people ages from 14-18 would enjoy it and get the part of the story better.

3 out of 5 stars Yes... I Watched This, But If You Repeat That I'll Deny It.......2007-02-22

I secretly watched this movie because... ahem, I am familiar with the Naked Mile and despite my preference for film making as an art, I do enjoy a bad gross-out comedy once in a while.

The plot of this film revolves around familiar themes that are prevalent throughout the American Pie franchise: the desire of an adolescent protagonist to lose his virginity before graduation, squeamishly embarrassing situations, wild partying, alumni who are sexual/party legends, and outlandish scatological humor. 'American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile' continues to raise the bar on gross-out gags involving urination, vomiting, diarrhea, farting, and ejaculate. It also contains the highest amount of nudity and penis jokes seen thus far in the series. For all its crude depictions of promiscuous sexuality, alcohol and recreational drug use, and other hedonistic debauchery, it also features a plot line which concludes in a characteristically sweet manner.

Don't get me wrong. It's a really horrible movie that will never win any awards. There are times when the plot literally grinds to a stop so that they can show gratuitous sequences of partying and flesh. But for what it is: junk food movies, well, how can you criticize that? It's delicious, terribly bad for you, and irresistible.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as 1-3, but definitely better than 4.......2007-02-18

Although it doesn't live up to most of its predecessors, American Pie 5: The Naked Mile, is still a pretty good comedy. The big stars from the trilogy are overall absent as the movie focuses on Steve Stifler's little cousin Eric. Being something of the black sheep of the family for being a senior in high school and still a virgin, Eric gets a guilt-free weekend pass from his girlfriend to visit a college campus for the legendary Naked Mile...
The movie, though not a masterpiece, is quite funny and it is guaranteed to provide more than a just a few laughs. The casting is pretty good, but it's just too bad that most of the original characters are missing. An appearance by Seann William Scott would have been great!
The setting, the dialogues, the music and the humor, are overall good.
As for the film's highlight, it has to be the girls! Jessy Schram and Candace Kroslak to name a few were simply AMAZING!!!
Overall, it is a movie worth watching, and even though quite silly at times, it will surely put you in a good mood!

John Cusack displays his usual charm in this adventure film from early in his career. Prep-school student Dan Bartlett (Cusack) flunks his chemistry final and has to forgo a Caribbean vacation with his wealthy girlfriend Laurie and her family. When the professor decides to be lenient and lets him pass, Dan sets off after Laurie--but finds himself one step behind her as he's sidetracked, shanghaied, and almost shipwrecked. Meanwhile, the boat that Laurie is on gets hijacked, just as Dan finally catches up. Hot Pursuit won't be remembered as one of Cusack's best films, but it's enjoyable and has beautiful shots of the Caribbean. Robert Loggia gives a rambunctious performance as an old sea dog and Ben Stiller makes his film debut as a sleazy cabin boy. --Bret Fetzer

I bought it for my boyfriend. He couldn't find it anywhere and was dying to see it again. We both enjoyed it. It's an fun, easy to watch movie. Its fun to see Ben stiller so young in a movie. Jerry Stiller, John Cusack and the father from There's something about Mary are great in it too.. He said it was a great birthday present. If you like older movies like Weekend at Bernies, you'll like this.

i have always loved this movie and beleive it or not me and a friend are two of the few people who actually saw this in the movie theater. It didnt last a week if I recall and I saw it opening day. John Cusack is and always will be the man.

My husband and I saw this on tv a few years back and had taped
it because we enjoyed the movie so much. Video tapes go bad on
you when you watch something over and over, so we were really
glad when we found that you had this movie on DVD. One thing
we really like about Amazon is that you have a wide varity of
movies to choose from--even ones that are older and we are able
to find them with you.

3 out of 5 stars Ben Stiller's First Movie.......2005-09-11

This movie is probably better then 3 stars, but I just couldn't give it that 4th star. Any fan of John Cousak will like this money. I also like this movie more and more each time I see it. If you are looking for some classic Cousak to add to your collection, this is it, plus it is Ben Stiller's First Movie.

Description

This uplifting story begins on Christmas Eve in New York City as three elderly businessmen prepare to enjoy a festive dinner together. In a show of holiday spirit, they receive visits from two kind-hearted strangers — first a young man, then a young woman. Each has come to return a wallet they believe one of the gentlemen has lost. From this humble beginning, friendships are built, and romance ensues. The elderly gentlemen meet with a tragic mishap in a blizzard, returning to earth as benevolent ghosts who act as the young couple's guardian angels. Before proceeding to Heaven, the spirits work behind the scenes to ensure that the couple's love will endure forever. Filled with heart and soul, this charming 1940 holiday classic is perfect for the Christmas season — and beyond.

1 out of 5 stars Boring!!!!!!!!.......2007-01-10

I realize this is an old movie - but it was very boring - and the ending was not satisfying.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiriting classic that time has not eroded.......2006-11-28

This film is timeless in that it both charms and teaches.
Three old men with good hearts look for someone to celebrate Christmas with by throwing 3 wallets containg $[...] each into the street. A bet is made whether or not anyone would be honest enough to return them. Just as time was up and the bet over a young Texan rings the bell and returns the wallet. A few moments later a young woman returns another and the two fall in love. The three elderly gentleman have a tragic death after becoming close friends with the young couple. Their spirits return to their mansion where they set about helping the couple. One by one the elderly specters are called to their eternity until only one remains.
In my estimation no Christmas collection should be found without this warm hearted and sincere masterpiece of cinema.
I gave 5 stars for the movie itself, the dvd is somewhat lacking, without any special features and about half way through the movie, for a few seconds, there was a marked degradation of the transfer but only for a short time.
This is a personal favorite of mine and I hope that it will be to you as well.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, heart-warming film.......2006-04-10

With spring, a young man's fancy turns to love - and so I sought out a romance to watch. Of course, being me, I chose a nontraditional sort of romance, one involving ghostly matchmakers. Since my own love life (or lack thereof) would seem to require some sort of supernatural intervention itself, Beyond Tomorrow seemed like a perfect choice. This 1940 classic is actually a Christmas movie, truth be told, but there's no harm in watching it whenever you like. After all, a failure to keep Christmas in your heart throughout the entire year leaves you vulnerable to nocturnal visits from the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.

Beyond Tomorrow tells a simple but touching story. It all starts with three older gentlemen who share the same house and work together running an engineering firm. Chad (C. Aubrey Smith) and Michael (Charles Winninger) are all business, working late on Christmas Eve, while George (Harry Carey) enjoys Christmas as a jolly Irishman should. When he learns that his invited guests are unable to join him and his friends for Christmas Eve dinner, George forestalls the two old fogeys' idea of heading out to the club by inviting two strangers for dinner. Each of the men sticks ten dollars and his card in a new wallet, pitches it out onto the snowy sidewalk, and waits to see if fate (and an honest heart or two) will bring any good deed doers to their door. Two out of three ain't bad, as a young Texan (Richard Carlson) and a charming young teacher (Jean Parker) end up joining them for dinner. The two young folks quickly fall in love, spending many a happy hour in the company of their three unassuming benefactors over the following few weeks. Even as they make plans for a lifetime together, however, they lose their three good friends in an airplane crash. And so it is that Chad, Michael, and George return home in ghostly form. And it's a good thing they do, as the young lovers soon face some rocky times, as new-found success as a singer and the attentions of another fashionable young lady turn the young Texan's head.

I'm a little surprised this film isn't more widely known, as it really does tell a wonderful story. The love story itself actually pales in comparison to the lives (and deaths) of the three older gentlemen. George's two friends gradually lose their crusty edges by the time their personal calls from heaven come, but it is the warm-hearted George (who, even as a ghost, cares more about the young lovers' happiness than his own eternal rest) that really steals the show and makes this such a should-be Christmas classic. A powerful performance by the wonderful Maria Ouspenskaya adds further emotion to a truly heart-warming story.

4 out of 5 stars Beyond Christmas.......2006-02-01

I really enjoyed the movie. I thought that it was light, entertaining and shows the true meaning of Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond anything I have ever seen for Christmas.......2006-01-12

I liked most, that this movie was not a typical Christmas plot. Three men whom are stood up by their Christmas guest decide to make a bet. They each take a wallet with a $10.00 bill that were for gifts, and place a business card of their own inside of it. They open the window and through all the wallets out onto what is a typical busy sidewalk during the holiday season. They wanted to see if anyone would find and return the wallets. Then they would invite this person to join in a Christmas Dinner. Two of the wallets returned. One from a young man and the other a young women. It just so happens that both are away from home and family on this holiday season and accept the three mens offer of the Christmas Dinner. The group become great friends and spend all their time together, until a plane crash takes the lives of the 3 gentlemen whom had taken a business journey together. The three men's spirits return to the house where they had always gathered to share a cigar or brandy.
Throughout the movie, one by one the heavens call and a loved one appears to show them the way to heaven. All except one man who fights to stay a little longer to help the young couple through some trying times. He sacrifices what is to be his one chance at going to the heavens above to stay behind and help the ones he loves through some trying times. The rest you have to see for yourself. One thing is sure, when it is my time to go I hope it is just like this movie - just beautiful.

Description

Meet Olga, a woman who "possessed a mind so warped she made sadism a full-time business!" In the first of the series, Olga uses pot parties and comic-book violence to turn Gigi Darlene and other female captives into her White Slaves of Chinatown. But Olga has her tender side too and, in the mood for romance, selects an occasional slave for a little loving: "The disease called Olga cannot be fought!" And after relocating to New Jersey, Olga's House of Shame is open for business! With the help of her malignant brother and a sweet-faced victim-turned-protege, Olga runs a crime syndicate while gleefully engaging in unhealthy extracurricular activities in this, the most outrageous of the series. Finally things take a bizarre turn with the most obscure Olga of them all, Olga's Dance Hall Girls, in which a new brat-faced Olga recruits suburban housewives as "hostesses" for a dance hall which is really just a front for -- are you ready? -- a satanic cult! Ouch! For maximum effect, view while shackled.

2 out of 5 stars Fast forward review.......2004-06-14

Ah yes, Olga. One of the most cheesy set of flicks ever made. We're talking no sound track at all, just some added-on narration and other effects, and no color. There were a lot of these "roughies" made, but these are some of the most famous.

I'd stick to "House of Shame", if you're interested in sex sleaze. We got topless babes tied to trees and fake whipped, but not too bad (hey, considering that stuff coming out of eastern europe these days, the "fake" is a necessary comment). We got some paddling through mesh hose, and especially a soldering iron scene that actually approaches the kind of realism that Franco achieves. OK, that means it's ridiculous, but you gotta have some cred for even having a soldering iron scene, eh?

There's also some pretty silly scenes involving Olga threatening models with strange tools and implements that don't really look very effective and a lot of plot, if you call silent movie footage with a narrator "plot". Topless is all the nudity you can expect, but it does show the goods. You could probably extract a clip or two here for old times sake. Two stars for being famous and actually having some reason for being notorious.

5 out of 5 stars ''Olga'', back and better than ever!.......2003-06-19

This fabulous new release from the good folk at Something Weird Video presents three of the infamous "Olga" films, complete and uncut, with a few choice extras.

For maximum effect, you should watch the movies in chronological order, as follows...

WHITE SLAVES OF CHINATOWN - Meet Olga Petroff (Audrey Campbell). She is a hard-hearted woman with a penchant for torture and sin. Olga runs a prostitution ring, and also has shares in an opium sydicate. Watch as Olga 'disciplines' her girls in outlandish torture methods! Keep an eye out Gigi Darlene (BAD GIRLS GO TO HELL) who plays one of Olga's lovelies.

OLGA'S HOUSE OF SHAME - Olga relocates her business to an abandoned mill in upstate New York. Joining Olga is her corrupt brother Nick (W.B. Parker) and the lovely Elaine (Alice Davis, aka Alice Linville). When the beautiful Nadja (Ella Daphne) tries to destroy Olga's empire, there's hell to pay as Olga fights back with all her fury.

OLGA'S DANCE HALL GIRLS - Olga (now played by Lucy Eldredge) sets up 'housekeeping' in the suburbs, and recruits all the able-bodied housewives in the area for her new business, which is just a front for a weird satatnic cult, complete with Olga as the 'High Priestess'!. Featuring appearances by Larry Hunter, Hattie Felder and Moia Gifford.

The extra features include the short-subject "Audrey Campbell: Art Lover" which also features her husband, director Byron Mabe (THE HEAD MISTRESS). There's also the "Olga" exerpt from MONDO OSCENITA, trailers for the films featured on the disc and a tantalising exerpt from the 'lost' "Olga" film, MADAME OLGA'S MASSAGE PARLOR (which starred W.B. Parker and Alice Linville reprising their roles of Nick and Elaine!).

With Synapse set to release the missing "Olga" film (OLGA'S GIRLS) complete with a commentary by no less than Audrey Campbell herself later this year, fans will have to wait a while longer to complete their collection.

I also recommend the following Something Weird double-features: "Sinderella and the Golden Bra/Goldilocks and the Three Bares", "The Notorious Daughter of Fanny Hill/The Head Mistress", "Bad Girls Go to Hell/Another Day Another Man" and "The Violent Years/Girl Gang".

5 out of 5 stars Before there was Cocaine, there was "Green Ice".......2006-06-28

Despite the rather lackluster reviews of some of the other folks, this 1977 heist flick is one of my favorite Intrigue films, and it calls to mind The Thomas Crowne Affair (1967) and the various James Bond films. The emphasis here is on the intrigue, and not death defying feats and explosions. Think an Everyman Thomas Crowne, who can MacGyver up for nice Q-section gadgets, and you get the picture.

Joseph Wiley (O'Neill) is on vacation in South America. While there, a case of mistaken identity lands him with a cache of smuggled emeralds. While running from the "bad guys" when they realize their mistake, he meets Holbrook (Archer), and adventurous lady who also happens to be the daughter of a reigning member of the international diamond cartel searching for her missing sister. Argenti (Sharif) is her fiancé, who has been exiled to Columbia and forbidden to leave, on pain of death, for betraying the diamond cartel some years before. Argenti is now in emeralds, and rules the country with a velvet cloaked iron fist. No longer able to trade in the superior quality diamond, he consoles himself with a fortune in emeralds, which he hides away in his high tech vault in the sky, atop the tallest building in Medillin. Miguel (Ambriz) is the leader of a resistance movement defying Argenti's economic rule, who also happened to be the lover of Holbrook's younger sister, who was murdered by Argenti's agents months before. Wiley finds himself embroiled in this cauldron of intrigue, and uses his electrical engineering training, in MacGyver-esque fashion, to stage a heist of the emeralds and bring Argenti to ruin.

All told, this is a film about a man in over his head, playing a game of chance with people born to it. John Laroquette shows his ugly mug as one of Riley's pals, who arranges to get them onto the top of Argenti's vault. There are some great scenes, as well: the whole "disposal by pigs" in the prison, the interaction between the coffee farmer and Riley (and the strange leaf he gives Riley to chew), and the coup-de-grace performed by the mysterious assassin whose been watching Argenti all the years of his exile. It's an elegant film.

2 out of 5 stars Much Stale Business Seen Here........2005-06-12

A poorly developed action adventure film shot largely in Mexico, this affair begins in promising fashion, but after its first of several changes in direction occurs within the plotline, little remains that will interest a viewer. A group of international students (in reality organized supporters of anti-government rebels) is massacred in Colombia by Federales as action opens, while during alternating scenes Joe Wiley (Ryan O'Neal), an American electronics engineer, visiting Mexico to recover from a divorce, meets an affluent socialite, Lillian Holbrook (Anne Archer). When the two become romantically involved, a complicated situation forms since Lillian is being wooed by Meno Argenti (Omar Sharif), a powerful plutocrat who controls the emerald trade for the rotten Mexican government, thus leading to shared distaste between the two men. When Lillian travels to Colombia in quest of her missing younger sister, Joe goes with her, an act not endorsed by Meno who wishes to wed her for personal reasons other than love, and a climactic conflict between the rivals can result only in violence. The screenplay is a hotchpotch with a thread of intended light-hearted romance woven among such disparate themes as murder, torture and sadism, along with grotesquely silly stunts that Joe and his cohorts perform in attempts to foil the evil Argenti. The piece is heavily cut for distribution, and editing is very choppy, increasing the episodic nature of a script that consistently meanders, scenes honouring logic being very rare indeed. The players are somewhat hindered by their cliche laden lines, O'Neal being even more encumbered by a large assortment of electronic and other specialized equipment that is magically available for use in situations requiring derring-do. Camerawork under supervision from cinematographer Gilbert Taylor is strikingly effective and creative but general mistreatment of basic rules of continuity sinks this effort despite its pretty scenic effects.

1 out of 5 stars Amazon needs a NO STAR system for this bomb!.......2006-11-11

This is the worst piece of JUNK to come out of Hollywood. The story AND acting STINK. This thing doesn't even make the "D" list, it's that BAD.

And to Cree Putney.....stop your whining. YOU should be paying the public to buy this cheap piece of trash.

3 out of 5 stars After all these years.......2004-12-02

After all these years, people are still buying this movie! Somebody is making money on my film that I produced over 10 years ago. It's amazing that I have not received a penny for all the effort that was put into this project. I was only 25 years old when this was produced. It was my first and last project at this scale. Now I work for RE/MAX International in Denver, Colorado and produce and edit motivational videos for our associates, a very rewarding job. If anyone can help me with making good on this project I would appreciate it.

The star is a female body-builder who pumps iron to get ready for the big battle scene. I guess her big biceps help here carry her automatic rifle. The actors all went to the Ed Wood School of Acting (E.W.S.A
