Description

FRONTLINE marks the 10th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide with a documentary chronicling one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century. In addition to interviews with key government officials and diplomats, the two-hour documentary offers eyewitness accounts of the genocide from those who experienced it firsthand. FRONTLINE illustrates the failures that enabled the slaughter of 800,000 people to occur unchallenged by the global community.

5 out of 5 stars PBS special: one of the best.......2007-06-01

I teach a genocide and hate awareness class. As a teacher, this documentary outstrips other videos concerning the atrocities in Rwanda. So many of our kids have seen Hotel Rwanda. Not that it is bad, but it was edited by the director to not be as graphic as it could have been, and many of the key characters were changed, such as Gen. Dallaire into Nick Nolte's character.
The Ghosts of Rwanda interview many key people, from Dallaire to Kofi Annan, to the only American left in Rwanda to Hutu farmers who participated in the killings. It is the most indepth coverage that I can find. I would recommend it to anyone wanting information on the Rwandan genocide.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars.......2007-05-13

If you want to see the Rwandan genocide from an international perspective with interviews ranging from Kofe Annan to Madeline Albright I highly reccomend this documentary. Graphic at times, but always poignant.

5 out of 5 stars The Depths of Darkness.......2007-03-19

This 2 hour Frontline special probes into the depths of darkness in humanity, not just the Hutu's and Tutsi's, but also the UN, the international community and its leaders. I was shocked and dismayed by some of the cold callous acts perpetrated by western governments during Rwanda's hour of need. I use "hour of need" of course as a figment of speech, since this atrocity took place over 100 days.

This video clearly documents the events of the Rwandan Genocide. It interviews key players in the international community as well as those who participated in, and were victims of the Genocide. For the most part, the video shows the Genocide from an outside perspective. It volleys back and forth between all of the killing in Rwanda and the international communities response. The footage of death is deeply saddening. I was only uplifted by the few stories of individuals who risked their lives to save some.

I would have loved to see them make this into a three part special since it does not give the background into the area or the history that led up to such a tension, nor does it explore the colonial legacy that the Rwandans inherited. I was also disappointed that it didn't cover the events that took place after the RPF won the civil war. Understandably, they could not cover all aspects in one film, but and introduction and a follow-up would really help paint a fuller picture of events. Overall, I highly recommend this video, it is hard to watch, but it definitely opened up my eyes to the plight of so many people in Rwanda.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Documentary.......2007-02-11

I watched this documentary on PBS and I must say that it is one of the best ones I have seen in my whole life. And it is extremely disturbing too, because it sadly reminds us of what the human being is still capable of. The murder of almost one million lives in a couple of weeks was a shame for the whole mankind. The international community did nothing to stop the killings, the UN was as always deplorable and the soi-disant civilised world, i.e. the USA, France, UK, Belgium, Germany et alii, did not mind to intervene for political reasons, although at the time the USA had the marines in nearby Burundi. The Clinton administration and Kofi Annan(at the time chief of the peace keeping operations) did absolutely nothing concrete but uttering stupid, useless rhetorical and technical speeches. Not to mention the shameful, coward stance of the Belgian government that panicked and withdrew its troops and citizens. The real heroes were a bunch of canadian and african troops that did their very best to protect the remaining tutsis and moderate hutus and therefore deserve our biggest praises for all their efforts. Again, it is one more appalling moment in the human history. It seems we never learn. Among the scenes that shocked me forever are the sad images of dead bodies being drifted away in a rwandan river and of a little girl, nowadays a lady, being found alive among the dead bodies of her family. This DVD provides a wonderful opportunity to think over the sordid and noxious nature of European colonialism in Africa, after all, Rwanda was a Belgian colony and the Belgian fomented the apartheid between the Tutsis and Hutus through, among other things, the use of ID cards stating their ethnicity. It also shows the dangers of hands-off policies when intervention is morally and rightly justified and required. This is a must-have DVD. Please, let us not allow another Rwanda to happen again...

4 out of 5 stars The shame of the "civilized world" exposed........2007-02-06

A gripping and honest account of the role that the UN, Europe and USA have had in the Rwanda genocide with the cowardliness of their politics more marketing oriented than interested in the humanitarian cause. Any one thinking about voting for the Clintons again should see this, to grasp the real level of leadership they can produce under heat. Not to mention Kofi Annan (Nobel prize winner ???) a real butcher in diplomat's clothes.

3 out of 5 stars Frontline docs are great.......2006-12-21

This is another interesting documentary on marketing from the folks at Frontline on PBS. If you are into this check out The Persuaders. This doc simply shows how marketing information is gathered and used to market to young people.

5 out of 5 stars Show this to any teenager you can........2006-02-28

If you are a parent of a teenager, a teacher, or a youth minister, or anyone else who works with teens, somehow get them to watch this. I found it downright chilling and I watched it again right before I wrote this review.

This documentary isn't about bashing teens. It's about exposing a very small number of huge media corporate conglomerates (just seeing who ownes who is fascinating) who work around the clock to determine the next "cool" trend among teens. They study the teens who are on the cutting edge to determine what the next cool thing is and then they package whatever it is and mass market it to the general teen audience. Of course, once whatever-it-is goes mainstream, it isn't cool anymore.

They also study the strictly average teen, not the super gifted or the overachievers, to determine how to reach this population with their marketing. Teens then conform to what they've been sold. They buy products with money often given to them by their parents. The media moguls pocket the money, and then try to figure out the next "cool" thing, and the never ending cycle continues.

I could go on, but I can't really do justice to what is my favorite episode of Frontline. I've leant my copy to several friends and they've all been enlightened to things that they never suspected were happening. Truth is often stranger than fiction. This might have been sci-fi fifty years ago.

The take home lesson to me is that being cool sucks. It sucks your brain out of your head and your money out of your wallet. This is true particularly if you're trying to buy coolness. It's best to be who you are and let others decide how cool that is.

If you are a parent of teens, pull the TV cable out of the wall and stop giving teens money. Make them earn it.

Finally, be sure to get the movie "Josie and the Pussycats" to see the same subject dealt with in a fun and satirical way.

2 out of 5 stars An Unfair Trashing of Young Folk.......2006-02-22

This documentary effectively shows how Corporate America can manipulate teens, or at least squeeze their wallets dry. It does show how greedy and pervasive late capitalism can be. It shows the illogic of the market: things lose their coolness the more people know about it. It raises issues of which modern American parents should be concerned.

However, this still seemed like ageist youth-bashing. Youth buy leisure items, but their parents did too two to four decades ago. My parents bought James Brown records as fanatically as I buy Pet Shop Boys CDs. (Oops! I'm dating myself.) Youth have and emit conflicting images around sexuality. However, so did their parents. Whether it's Woodstock, "Grease," or Studio 54, young people have consistently been sexual or provocative. This film seems to suggest that teens are just hyper-consumptive idiots, but I highly doubt adults are any different. If a teen girl wants to show off her midriff, her mother is saving up for Botox injections. Young boys like to gross-out gags, but their fathers pursue get-rich-quick schemes and pay ridiculous amounts of money to prevent their balding. Middle-aged Americans are the dupe to the boardroom just as much as their children. Thus, the documentary seemed to rag on youth and let adults off the hook. I've never seen a documentary so unsupportive of its subject matter.

Description

Frontline examines the "persuasion industries" -- advertising and public relations. To cut through consumers' growing resistance to their pitches, marketers have developed new ways of integrating their messages into the fabric of our lives, using sophisticated market research techniques to better understand consumers and turning to the little-understood techniques of public relations to make sure their messages come from sources we trust.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very comprehensive and informative.......2006-12-07

I have just taken both marketing and public relations courses and this doc was both informative and actually entertaining because it breaks down the smoke and mirrors around one of the most pervasive forces in our American culture...the hyper-consumerism fueled by marketing. It also discusses the emotional basis of purchasing decisions and how consumers turn their back on reason when it comes to many purchasing decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo PBS for a non company perspective.......2006-04-25

What's wrong with being bombarded with ads? We'd like to think we are immune and to some extent we are. Frontline goes into depth about the effects of 'persuasion' techniques and what those techniques are. Of course these things are used by our government, political groups, etc. too so it is a far reaching subject. This program is a good reason to support PBS

5 out of 5 stars the persuaders.......2005-10-06

PBS.org has everything an instructor needs to initially present this film to an audience. I learned about wordsmithing and creating consumer cults. The info on political data-mining and the future of political campaigns is intriguing and has the potential for serious discussion and prediction: where is this all going? It's above the needs of a 10th grade English course, but courses in psychology, media, economics, advertising, and U.S. government will find use in this film.

Description

Speed. Meth. Glass. On the street, methamphetamine has many names. What started as a fad among motorcycle gangs in the 1970s has become big business, largely due to the efforts of two Mexican drug runners who began smuggling ephedrine - the same chemical used to make over- the-counter cold remedies - into California by the ton. Hundreds of illegal meth labs are now operating in the western United States, and the effects are sweeping the nation. From coast to coast, meth abuse is on the rise, but who's responsible? Is the government doing enough to crack down on this latest drug craze? In a reporting partnership with The Oregonian, FRONTLINE investigates America's addiction to meth and exposes the inherent conflict between the illegal drug trade and the legitimate three-billion-dollar cold remedy business.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I thought it was very informative.......2007-01-27

I already knew a great deal about America's meth problem, but his added so much more - particularly the pharmaceutical industry's unwillingness to fully cooperate with the DEA in help reduce the supply-side issue.

2 out of 5 stars One Small Slice of a Large Pie.......2007-01-14

Please remember that this is a Frontline episode, not a work from A&E, the History Channel, or most of PBS. Thus, it ran like a news show, rather than a proper documentary.

This work shows meth addicts at the beginning briefly, then it goes into how the DEA is trying to prevent its production and how drug traffickers find loopholes in the strategy. If you want to hear more, you won't.

Oprah's episode on meth was much different than this. Fred Durst sang, "Keep rollin', rollin', rollin'!" and Lady Miss Kier of Deee-Lite sang, "Keep the host spinnin'! Keep the host spinnin'!" Gay activists have been trying to curb meth abuse in the gay community. However, none of this comes up for Nightline. Nightline just gives you one perspective on this multi-faceted concern.

I saw this on TV and I thought I'd learned all the stuff these documentaries usually have to say, but I only saw just the second half of it or so and it was fascinating, and I learned a lot of new things, even though I've already seen a few documentaries on AIDS at school, and I have read a lot about it.

This documentary was really interesting and really effective. It had lots of new information, and a really deep impact, and at the end of it, it ended just so powerfully that my sister and I just looked at each other, and both of us had tears in our eyes.

I really think everyone should see this documentary. It ties in science, socioeconomic stuff from around the world, talks about the US, and just... is really amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting overview.......2007-07-04

This report, like all quality reporting, leaves it to the viewer to form an opinion. I came away thinking that Wal-Mart wasn't evil, but just in a good position to take advantage of changes in the market. They did so aggressively, but that's competition for you. You can't expect companies to go easy on each other. You also can't expect companies to pass up great opportunities to pad their bottom lines, no matter what the cost to the working class, here or in China. That's what I took away, anyway. As for a prescrition for the maladies described in the piece? I really don't know. Like I said in the title, this i really just an overview; I'd have to learn more. And I plan to, but reports on this subject seem to be predominantly heavy-handed propoganda pieces.

Incidentally, I can't say if this is worth the money or not, I borrowed it from the library.

5 out of 5 stars Is a monopoly good for fair business practices? .......2007-05-24

To understand the economic effect of Wal-Mart on the United States, maybe it's best to start by looking at their enormous growth in a relatively short time. Aggressive is a good word to describe this company's approach to retailing. In 1970, there were 38 stores. In 1980, it was 286 stores. In 1990, Wal-Mart had 1500 stores and overtook all of its competition in 1991 to become the largest retailer in America.

Part of this huge influence on our markets can be partly attributed to an ill conceived, permanent trading agreement with China during the Clinton presidency. In the early 1990's, Wal-Mart flooded their store inventories with manufactured goods from China and low wage countries. These products had a high mark-up which seriously boosted profits. By the late 1990's, Wal-Mart was dependent on low cost Asian imports but it suited them well financially.

China pays employees anywhere from 25 to 50 cents an hour for work. This helps keep production costs down. So much so that it hurts American companies trying to compete and has even forced some of them out of business. As stated in this program, Wal-Mart has some 6000 global suppliers for its goods and 80 percent of those suppliers are in China. Knowing that China is the largest exporter of consumer goods to the U.S. economy and Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the U.S. economy in consumer goods, it becomes abundantly clear that Wal-Mart has designs on dominating all retailing in the United States. One interview with an employee from the Port of Long Beach also reveals some interesting information. The port brings in 36 billion dollars of consumer goods from China each year and the U.S. exports 3 billion dollars of raw materials to China.

With a massive imbalance such as this, you can only imagine the frightful trade deficit it can create. Since this program first aired on November 16, 2004, Wal-Mart reported record sales of 285 billion dollars, up by 11 percent. The commerce department reported a record trade deficit with China of 162 billion dollars, up by 31 percent. With these figures in mind, one expert in this program estimates that this lopsided economic situation has caused America to lose approximately 1 million jobs to China since the early 1990's.

This documentary is not all one sided. There are interviews for and against Wal-Mart and their business practices so it is a fair look at both sides of the picture. In the end, from my viewpoint of the evidence given, it appears that Wal-Mart is not good for America for many obvious reasons. This mega-company appears to hurt the U.S. economy more than help it. To further examine Wal-Mart and their structure, I would highly recommend the documentary `Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price' in conjunction with watching this one.

Is Wal-Mart Good for America?: Frontline - 2004

I have an MBA and have found it difficult to explain to my kids why WalMart is so bad for America. This documentary does an excellent job. Showing first-hand how the Chinese are exporting $162 billion in products to the US each year while they're only importing a measly $3 billion in natural resources from the US each year. The Chinese, in turn, make wages of 50 cents to a dollar a day, meaning they can't possibly afford to purchase any US imports (which is why they only import natural resources they don't grow there). Meanwhile, Americans have lost their jobs as WalMart forces companies to have their products manufactured in China (not anywhere else, just China where the labor is 50 cents an hour). There are two mistakes in this film that were more from a lack of how the WalMart business model differs from older business models. Sam Walton is credited with creating the pull system (where instead of manufacturers manufacturing what they thought would sell and selling it to buyers, the buyers TELL the manufacturers what they're making, when they're making it, and how much they'll charge for it). Walton wasn't the first to do this. When DELL came up with the first extensive Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing system, they incorporated this to a certain extent, Walton just pushed it farther. The second reference was giving Walton credit for first using bar code systems and (just-in-time) inventory. DELL did it first, not WalMart. The one thing Walton did do first was the hub-and-spoke warehouse transportation model where mega-warehouses in each region ship (via trucks) directly to each store in the area. That was his idea. Southwest Airlines built upon it to make their airline a success as well. The other thing about this documentary that somewhat irritated me was the complete lack of pointing out that WalMart forced these manufacturers to move to China, where there are absolutely no environmental control laws. My husband is an environmental engineer and says there's more than enough proof that China is dumping billions of tons of pollution into the water and air (we'll be paying for that too). Even the WalMart executive stated quite clearly that the only things sold at WalMart for a "fair" price were the sale items. Everything else had a substantial markup. I wonder how all those WalMart shoppers would feel if they knew that they really weren't saving. AND they're making Americans lose their jobs. Lastly, the economist interviewed was a complete idiot. Citing some economic theory that's proven full of holes, he then contradicts himself. What a bozo. This is why no good President has ever listened to an Economist. Did I mention that our huge trade deficit with China is thanks to Hillary and President Bill Clinton? I sincerely hope anyone uninformed enough to consider voting for Hillary takes a look at this first. Hillary will surely send this country back to the stone age and the transformation back to a third world country will be complete.

2 out of 5 stars Just ONE point of view.......2006-11-09

This review will probably not be received with equanimity by most americans...
The movie by frontline focuses heavily on the fact that China is putting in a LOT more goods thru walmart into USA at a MUCH cheaper price than can be manufactured by american companies, and that thousands of jobs are being lost etc..
All admirable points and no doubt true.

Before we ask if "Walmart is good for/to America" in isolation, in the much vaunted/desired "GLOBAL" economy that has been vigorously pushed by the so called economically developed nations over the last century, shouldnt we ask "Has AMerica been good for/to the world 's economy" as a whole , in a Global/trans national view? considering yourself as a "global" citizen rather than just an American.

Now all of a sudden, when the technological superiority has been evened out in consumer products, but the relative wealth level is still enormousl y lopsided, it is UNFAIR for those countries to sell cheaper?

By that argument it would have been unfair to even colonize america from the point of view of the native Indians, or unfair to sell arms for INCREDIBLE amounts of raw materials/labour in extremely uneven exchanges over the past 60 years with all the 3rd world nations. Global economics ALSO has its cycle of evolutons, and I for one, am glad that extremely poor people for whom this is is pretty much a survival issue are able to raise their living standard a little, as opposed to America, where the problem of the "poor" is..obesity. The real culprit here is the "Corporation culture" that the "developed" countries have created, with th result that the top 1% of the population in the USA control 90% of the wealth. this would have been a better DVD if it had not played upon the fears of a public in inflaming the "chinese are taking our jobs" model and focused on corporate greed, of which walmart is only a single example in the USA.
I found the DVD amusing .

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Not!!!.......2006-04-04

This documentary was first shown as a expose` on the PBS series, Frontline. It started a trend. It asks the hard questions about how Wal-Mart became the world's largest retailer, and at what cost? It is not preachy as with Robert Greenwald's version and it's not biased like Michael Moore. It gets both sides of the arguement to explain themselves and it gives the viewer the chance to decide. Very powerful journalism!

Description

Sixty years ago (1945), Allied troops marching into Germany at the end of World War II found evidence of atrocities which have tortured the world's conscience ever since. As these troops entered Nazi concentration camps and faced the horrors of gas chambers, medical experimentation labs, crematoria, and haunted, starving survivors, they made a film record of what they saw. "Frontline" gave the film its first world broadcast in 1985.

5 out of 5 stars Memory of the Camp.......2006-11-04

I have watched several DVD's of the Holocaust. This is one of the best ones I've seen. This is also very difficult to watch...what these people had to go through. I am proud that some of them survived, if the people telling these story's would not have survived no one would know the truth. I would like to see a DVD of the people today in Germany and what they really think of the Holocaust. I wonder if they are sorry this happened.

5 out of 5 stars Should go to Air annually across the world !!!!.......2006-07-31

I am a white, middle aged, Australian male and try to pay attention to the needs of my family, friends and people in the local and global communities. This project is without doubt the single most graphic and convincing evidence I have ever experienced for my sense that we all need to take responsibility for ensuring our voice is ALWAYS heard.

This video has enabled me to have conversations with my teenage children, and their friends, that I hope will ensure their generation is a little better equipped to deal with the awesome challenges that await them.

But the video, watch all of it if you can, weep, rage and strengthen your resolve to do what is possible within your power to promote a legacy of - Never Again - for the countless people who were blameless victims of the worst evil humanity has ever had to confront.

I strongly advise that parents review the video personally if they have children 15-16 years or younger prior to allowing them (or not) to view it.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2006-04-21

As a college professor I use this film in undergraduate and graduate Multiculturalism. To say that this demonstrates the end result of a belief in evolution is vapid and sophomoric. What it does demonstrate is the precision with which the Nazi's succeeded in creating the "other" whether it was the Jews, Gays, or the Gypsies, instilling fear and loathing of the other worked wonders. The methods are identical to the religious rights' current anti-gay campaign. What I am sure that the previous reviewer was referring to was eugenics, not evolution. Eugenics had it's supporters in the United States as well, and in some circles, still does. The non-acceptance of diversity was the hallmark of the Nazi party and the video makes us realize what can happen when we believe that the "father" figure, and purity must be it obeyed, heavenly or otherwise.

5 out of 5 stars I am at a loss for words.......2006-03-07

Having just watched this unbelievably powerful documentary, I am still shaken, and suspect I will be for days. The footage is simply incredible. No other film about WWII, fictional or non-fictional, captures the horror of the concentration camps as simply and powerfully as this.

It is the most disturbing, horrifying, and powerful pieces of film I have ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-03-09

Very enlightening! Thank God that Frontline does the journalism that no one else seems to be doing these days. If this was common knowledge, we would have new leadership in the White House.

Just when you thought it was safe to go to bed, you learn that there really IS a conspiracy to subvert democracy -- and that the 'shadow' government of spy and espionage novels isn't just for paranoids anymore. Here's what I found the most interesting and terrifying: the number of senior NSA and CIA analysts who have left civil service or have retired. Leaving only the most junior staff to feed intelligence to the White House. Or maybe it is the documentation of the establishment of an extra-judicial system exempt from all constitutional oversight, and answerable only to the Pentagon and, perhaps, the White House.

It's better and more thrilling than any spy novel or movie I've seen because it's very real. Keep watching for my reviews, I may become of of the 'disappeared'.

A reveiw of Christopher Johnson's past reveiws suggests he dismisses any program that questions the bush administration. Two in particular were given only 1 star apeice. He is cleary reveiwing strictly along party lines.

Another incredible installment from Frontline and a must see for anyone who cares about Democracy. Frontline is known and respected for bringing together sometimes small fragments of network news items and it's own research, inevitably weaving them together to form a seamless reality check for the viewer. Frontline "connects the dots" and The Dark Side is no exception. The Dark Side looks at the post 9/11 conflict between the White House (Chaney) and the CIA (Tenant). Beginning with the tragic event of 9/11, the film makers clearly explore the facts behind the Vice Presidents role in the White House. And in doing so, sheds light on George Tenant (former CIA director) and other administration players from 2000 to the present. The Dark Side reveals that while the rest of us sleep soundly, something incredibly insidious is happening beneath the surface of our "Reality TV/X-Box" dreams - I guess when a certain number of people have been pacified into fear, anything can happen. The Dark Side title is taken from a quoted comment Chaney made regarding "(pursuing) the 'enemy' into the shadows" suggesting that we (the Administration) should begin to play on the "enemies" terms. But what is also brought into the light is the question of the dark(er) side of those we entrust - those "in power." Despite the intentions of doing what might be percieved as best for America, there are those who are bent in using power to pursue and establish personal agendas and doing so at the expense of the very values they claim to uphold - ironic. And dangerous. The Dark Side rates among the best documentaries regarding the fallout of 9/11. It joins the ranks of Fog of War, Why We Fight, Control Room, Frontline's Rumsfields War and The Torture Question - all essential additions to your library. The facts revealed in The Dark Side should be a positive contribution to the dialog regarding American politics while raising serious questions about the simplistic "do-gooders vs. evil do-ers" paradigm that so many have bought into and hold so dear.
