Creepy intimacy, plenty of suspense, and a few surprises enliven this black-and-white treat from the director of Memento. Bill is a struggling writer who fills his time and mind by following random strangers he sees on the street. After breaking his own rule ("never follow the same person twice") he becomes fascinated by Cobb, a voyeur who takes things one step further--actually breaking into people's homes to sift through their things. As you might expect, the relationship soon becomes unhealthy. Writer-director Christopher Nolan already reveals a sure hand in this early neo-noir work. Like Memento, Following toys with timelines, jumping back and forth and carefully dropping bits of information exactly when they're needed. Short and sharp, Following features an intriguing plot line and fine, understated performances by the entire cast. Don't miss it. --Ali Davis

Description

An unemployed aspiring "writer" Bill (Jeremy Theobald) has a peculiar hobby, shadowing strangers at random in the streets of London. When Cobb (Alex Haw), a man Bill has been following, catches him in the act, Bill is drawn into Cobb's world of breaking into flats and prying into the personal lives of their victims. In Bob, Bill finds a strange companion - part mentor, part confessor and part evil twin. With an ingenious structure that involves flash forwards and doubling back, the film tests our knowledge and understanding just as the protagonist is being duped into an elaborate triple-cross. "Following" heralded Christopher Nolan as a promising new talent whose promise was amply confirmed with "Memento."

5 out of 5 stars Has you in the first moments.......2007-02-06

More than anything, I was struck in this movie by how quickly and easily the director and main actor were able to pry me out of myself and put me in the shoes of the main character. Before I knew it, I was joining in his main passtime of Following strangers to see their lives. I've never wanted to do this before, but it was instantly effective filmmaking, and I could see how people would be fascinated by this activity.

I won't give away any plot points, but there is a very satisfying and unanticipated storyline resulting from the introduction.

Watch it for 5 minutes and see how well the film puts you into unfamiliar shoes with your unknowing consent.

4 out of 5 stars Another Christopher Nolan Masterpiece.......2007-01-11

Following is the first full-length film directed by Christopher Nolan (Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins). It certainly has the same feel as a Nolan movie, however, it's not quite as polished as Memento is. The film is short (only about an hour long), but its length serves as one of its strengths as you never lose interest in the story. The acting isn't exactly top-notch, but it's not really that kind of movie. Following is really one big showcase for the talent of Christopher Nolan. If you enjoyed his other work, you should defintely see this.

5 out of 5 stars If you liked memento, you'll like this one.......2006-10-24

I have to say that Memento is the best movie I've ever seen. I decided to watch this because it's by the same director and I was wondering what else he could come up with. And I wasn't dissapointed. The movie is in black and white and jumps around the timeline in an interesting way, which keeps you focused and trying to figure out what's going on. I thought the general idea of the movie, about a guy who follows and watches random people, trying to figure out who they are and what they do, is quite original but at the same time common to everybody -- who hasn't wondered about the random person on the street (I sure have).

The way the movie is presented is involving and at times humorous. The way the camera is positioned you really get a feel for being right there, next to the characters and involved in the storyline.

The movie is just as good on the second or third viewing (like Memento), and that's definitely evidence to the fact it's good.

I would definitely recommend this movie to people who liked Memento; you won't be dissapointed with it.

5 out of 5 stars It is like they dropped the slides of the movie and mixed it up.......2006-10-10

This movie is really fun because they mixed everything all around and made it confusing. Pay attention the other person is right. This movie is for people who like art movies. It is violent. Some people cannot follow it, but those who do love it. I really loved it. It is black and white so hopefully that does not turn you off, but it is really great. This is one you have to think with and pay attention to. This is not something to walk in and out of. It would not make any sense at all. Not one for kids. They will be really confused. It will take so long to explain it to them and still you may not be able to. A smart teen could probably understand it, but some adults cannot. If you are reading reviews I am sure you can. It is some great mental exercise and so much better than other movies when you want something of more substance.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Need To Pay Attention With This One. It's Worth It........2006-03-04

Following is the one of the cleverest, smartest, toughest psychological thrillers since...well...since Memento. Bill (Jeremy Theobald) is an unsuccessful wannabe writer. "I've been on my own for a while," he tells an older man at the beginning of the movie, "and getting kind of lonely...and bored...nothing to do all day. And that's when I started shadowing." Bill will pick out a person and spend the day secretly following them around, seeing what they do and who they meet, what their lives are like. Fate, or something more sinister, takes a hand when he follows Cobb (Alex Haw) one day...and Cobb confronts him in a cafe. Cobb is about Bill's age, but he's smart and assured. And a thief. He breaks into people's flats and takes things, not just for the money. He convinces Bill, almost in a seduction, to follow him around while he does this. Bill is torn between fascination and unease, and fascination wins. Cobb explains to him that "interrupting someone's life is what it's all about. Making them see all the things they take for granted." One night Bill meets an attractive blond (Lucy Russell) in a nightclub owned by her boyfriend, an older, ruthless criminal who deals in drugs and pornography. As their relationship develops, so does his relationship with Cobb. Cobb may not be the best guy around to trust. Maybe not Lucy, either.

You might think the movie is a linear neo-noir until you realize that while some scenes are not in a linear context, they still provide clues to what's happening to Bill. In one scene he may be scruffy. In another scene more-or-less well groomed. He may have a bruise the size of a fist on his cheek with a white rubber glove stuffed in his mouth; in the next scene, no bruise, no glove. The scenes aren't in any chronological context, but they aren't random, either. They're great as a way to cleverly capture your attention and to make you suspicious of what you're seeing and of what seems to be happening. We realize Bill's story is a lot more complicated than we think, and that Bill's version doesn't seem likely to be the only version. The conclusion makes absolute sense when we look back at everything, and it is totally unexpected.

Nolan, who made Memento three years after Following, is a master at cleverly moving around pieces of a puzzle. If Memento was close to being a masterpiece of indirection, Following shows Memento wasn't a lucky one-shot. The movie, according to IMDb, was shot on a budget of about $6,000 on weekends. The cast and crew were friends, coworkers and relatives. It doesn't look like the work of amateurs at all. This is a fully professional film. The cast, incidentally, does an outstanding job. Only Russell seems to have gone on to a professional acting career. Theobald captures the feel of a person who doesn't just follow, but is essentially a follower. And Alex Haw as Cobb brings to the role all the competent, assured superciliousness of a young Rupert Everett, and that's intended as a compliment.

The movie was shot full frame and the DVD transfer looks just fine. There are a number of extras that fans of Nolan will most likely find of interest, including a Nolan commentary. For people who can't stand puzzles, one of the extras includes the ability to restructure the story chronologically.

4 out of 5 stars Legendary film, but I expected it to be little better.......2007-03-21

This film is certainly an inspiration for every aspiring director dreaming about making his way in the maze of movie industry with virtually no money in his/her pocket.. The movie was shot with the strikingly low budget of 7,000 USD (may be + or - a little) by Robert Rodriguez - my personal idol and the most insolent "director" on the face of earth! Well there are many legends about how this guy, who was fanatic about making movies and did this solely for his pleasure, decided to make a big 16 mm project and had to undergo some medical experimentation on his body to raise enough money for it, which nobody else in his sane mind would deem enough.. There is no need to recite these stories because they are well-known. But to those of you who plan to buy this DVD I strongly recommend to order it together with his book "A Rebel Without A Crew" where Rodriguez in his simple and humorous style describes the whole adventure, how he and his friends went through all the troubles to shoot the movie and then how they marketted it in Holliwood and totally by chance it was noticed by some big ones.. It's really a very exciting book and makes you go through all the thrills together with the crew members. So it's 100-times more interesting to see the movie after you read the book, because it's exciting to see how all that was so well described and nurished in the book, looks in reality. Well, and to speak honestly, the movie itself is not of very high artistic value of course, but it's value is made by the story of its creation among other things. I must say I was a little bit dissapointed when I saw the film after reading the book, which probably made my expectations too high.. It seemed to me little too primitive and vulgar at times.. but, hey, then I remembered that it was made by non-professional with virtually no equipment except an old 16 mm camera and casting random villagers.. and I forgave it all its pitfalls. Overall 4 stars from me for very good movie and even better story that veils it!

P.S. Yeah, and this DVD comes with very good add-ons, namely there is Rodriguez' short film "Beadhead" which won some prize at one of the amateur festivals. Also his "10 Minute Film School" fiturette, which is well worse seeing for every aspiring amateur director.

To those of you who might complain a little about the quality of the picture, I should remind that this film was originally shot in 16 mm format, then it was transfered on various formats several times until finally this master version was produced. So.. don't be too judgemental and just enjoy the movie!

5 out of 5 stars El mariachi.......2006-05-30

Great movie preview!Makes you want to see the movie!Rated R for strong violence.

5 out of 5 stars six stars.......2006-02-15

Fantastic movie - Spanish subtitles - plot is the old mistaken identity one - with lives at stake - ending was wonderfully Spanish - Diego Rivera's (the great muralist) blood and guts and doom with much hilarity thrown in. Energy of Spike Lee - message of John Singleton ("Boys n the Hood"). As surprisingly good as "After Dark, My Sweet" and as offbeat and original. Don't miss it.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2005-08-02

It is interesting to observe the difference of opinion among reviewers regarding the relative merits of "El Mariachi" and "Desperado". I agree with those who prefer the low-budget "El Mariachi". Of course it's a fictional tale, but its atmospherics and characters just seem genuinely redolent of northern Mexico; whereas "Desperado" is an entirely deracinated cartoonish Hollywood product. The fact that the language of "Desperado" is English, whereas that of "El Mariachi" is Spanish, is telling. Something bad seems to happen to Spanish-speaking actors, like Banderas and Selma Hayek, who "go Hollywood". It's hard to be a good actor in a language you speak imperfectly. Banderas and Hayek are both pretty much embarrasing in "Desperado". The no-name actors of "El Mariachi" are decidedly not.

I suspect the difference of opinion has a lot to do with whether you know anything about Mexico. "Desperado", incidentally, is not a Spanish word. The Spanish word is "desesperado", or perhaps "pistolero", which is how the title is rendered in the Spanish dubbing.

4 out of 5 stars very impressive Indy film.......2005-07-17

when playing a guitar can be a matter of life&Death. who knew?? mistaken idenity&other twisted things in this film keep the suspense going all throughout the film.the switch of a Guitar Case flips the whole game out of control.this is a very impressive film that is a true nail biter.

When a teenage schoolgirl is kidnapped by Mexican bandit El Diablo (Star Trek: Voyager's Robert Beltran), her clumsy, awkward schoolteacher Billy Ray Smith (Anthony Edwards) sets out to save her. The would-be hero in this offbeat Western teams up with crotchety veteran gunslinger Van Leek (Louis Gossett Jr.), who helps him form an unlikely posse to rescue Smith's damsel in distress. What sets this low-key, made-for-cable production apart from numerous other Westerns is its humorously skewed take on the myths and legends of the Old West, as it not only deconstructs Hollywood's romanticized view of the genre but Billy Ray's veneration of a mythical gunfighter named Kid Durango, whose literary adventures he regularly reads to his students. Gossett is wonderfully droll as unscrupulous six slinger Van Leek, whose motives are always suspect; Edwards is charming as the bumbling teacher; and the supporting cast--which includes Branscombe Richmond (Renegade), Miguel Sandoval (Get Shorty), and John Glover (Brimstone)--imbue life into their quirky gun-for-hire roles. Indeed the best aspect of El Diablo is the way in which many of its characters' façades are gradually revealed. The very tongue-in-cheek screenplay was coauthored by Halloween director John Carpenter. --Bryan Reeseman

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars El Diablo: Pixellation Hell in the Old West..........2007-05-26

This movie features a fine cast, an intriguing story with likable characters, and a very authentic "look." You get to liking Edwards' ungainly school teacher right off the bat, and when Gossett's grizzled bounty hunter makes his appearance, you are certain that the movie will deliver big entertainment...

And then the pixellation issues begin. Depending on which copy of the DVD you get; the screen image will begin to pixellate as early as chapter 2 or as late as chapter 4, finally locking up completely no later than early in chapter 4 (and I have yet to make it further than halfway into chapter 4). Of the three copies of this HBO original movie I have attempted to watch -- two copies from Amazon, and one purchased from Tower Records -- all have exhibited the exact same defect regardless of whether they are played on a DVD machine, PC/Mac, or PS2.

I'd love to watch this movie, but I am afraid that the disc-manufacturer's quality control (or lack thereof), is prepared to foil me at every turn. If you can acquire a copy free of manufacturer defects, you'll be guaranteed some fine entertainment...good luck!

4 out of 5 stars El Diablo.......2007-01-03

El diablo is a funny western about a young school teacher who decides to rescue one of his students kidnapped by a natorious bad man. Knowing nothing of gun play he teams up with an old gunfighter who tries to teach him the skillful art before rescuing the girl. The adventures they have while chasing the gang down and teaching lessons is funny and entertaining. It is well worth the time.

1 out of 5 stars Great movie - bad reproduction.......2004-03-22

This is one of my favorite movies ... I love it! BUT, I returned the DVD after finding out that it is not made in Widescreen or Dolby Digital. I know .. I should have looked first, but I assumed.:( Why does anyone even bother to make a DVD in Full Screen - HiFi? A tape is almost as good. This movie, and dozens more that I know of, deserve much more.

4 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Enjoyable Fun.......2003-04-06

I began watching this movie because there was simply nothing else on, and I like Lou Gossett Jr & Anthony Edwards. About 15 minutes into the film, I was hooked and really enjoying the ride. This is a very clever, witty, and funny screenplay, full of jokes both subtle and not, and it has a score that is nearly flawless, accentuating both action and comedy. There are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, and some truly unique comedic situations. In many respects, the whole film reminded me of "The Frisco Kid" with Harrison Ford and Gene Wilder, another of my favorite Western comedies.

Anthony Edwards (Billy Ray Smith) plays a tenderfoot schoolteacher prone to falling off and accidentally shooting horses. One of his students is kidnapped by the stunningly attractive El Diablo ("Star Trek: Voyager's" Robert Beltran,) and Edwards sets out to find the girl and bring her home. His misadventures with a band of misfit outlaws brings a lot of laughs and even some tender moments.

With only minor bad language and some blood here and there, this is a movie the whole family can enjoy. I highly recommend it, and plan to watch it again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Surprises and scares at every turn of this fun Western........1999-08-07

The unlikely pairing of Louis Gosset Jr. and Anthony Edwards makes this movie intensly engaging. These actors and their supporting cast take the viewer on a wild ride through the old west as a mild mannered school teacher "beats the devil". The rescuing of a lovely young school girl from the hands of a very sexy Mexican bad guy, is done with humor through the awkwardness of the rescuer Billy Ray, and lots of help from savy gun slinger Louis Gosset Jr.and his wonder horse Rio. Though this movie was made for cable TV it sacrificed nothing in quality. El Diablo is well cast, funny, sweet, action packed, and very worthwhile.

John Leguizamo is, in his own words, "young, Latin, and good looking" as the ambitious minimogul of the South Bronx drug trade in Franc Reyes' Latino twist on the urban crime saga. Reigning in his hyperactive energy, Leguizamo is like a coiled spring as the street-smart player who tries to leave the violence of his trade behind in an upwardly mobile odyssey, and Peter Sarsgaard brings a discomforting confidence to the smooth-talking investment banker trusted with his millions. Few of the other characters even register in the familiar underworld tale (though Denise Richards has fun as a bubbly, skin-deep seductress) and Reyes's flashy style is as distracting as it is energizing. It's the smoldering presence of Leguizamo that keeps the film centered through the betrayals, the bullet-riddled battles, and the slow realization that this cunning shark has just become bait in the deep seas of high finance. --Sean Axmaker

              Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Leguizamo keeps the empty Empire from crumbling.......2005-07-02

John Leguizamo (George A. Romero's Land Of The Dead, The Honeymooners) plays a hotshot street thug from the South of Bronx who winds up making a business deal with wallstreet hotshot, played by Peter Sarsgaard (the upcoming The Skeleton Key, Shattered Glass). Soon, Leguizamo's life turns upside down as he finds out that his business partner is trying to scam him. This is a very intriguing story but it leaves nothing to fill in the gaps except for a good performance by John Leguizamo which keeps this from going down in the dumps. Also starring Denise Richards (The World Is Not Enought, Valentine) as another ditzy woman with sexual ways, Rappers Fat Joe and Treach (Jason's Lyric), Nestor Serrano (The Negotiator) and a weird role for Isabella Rosselini (Death Becomes Her, Immortal Beloved) as a druglord...very weird and the hair.

              4 out of 5 stars i liked this movie.......2005-03-30

i liked this movie. its sort of like scarface. but its definately worth renting. i'm glad i saw it.

5 out of 5 stars Delilah Cotto a.k.a. Scene Stealer.......2004-12-02

Wow, Delilah Cotto sure can act. Her character Carmen is the best character in this movie. She's the reason we root for the main character Victor, who is played perfectly by John Leguizamo. Leguizamo and Cotto had great on scene chemistry and that was a key element to the movie. Jack, who is played by Peter Saarsgard, pitches an investment opportunity to Victor and he goes with it. But Victor's life comes crashing down as his crew turns on him and his relationship with Carmen is skating on thin ice. Carmen's friend and Jack's girlfriend Trish, who is played by Denise Richards, turns out to not be such a good friend. You'll see how evil those two are as the movie goes on. The two characters that did great in supporting roles were Jimmy (Vincent Laresca) and Chedda (Treach). They're very under-rated as actors and this movie should have gotten Academy Award Consideration. Punk ass Oscars! Movies like The Hours and Chicago are stupid boring movies that are a reflection of people with bad taste in movies and further validates the point that the haters are jealous of Empire, the greatest movie of all-time. You ain't a real movie watcher if you don't see Empire. It's the greatest ever. No questions asked!

3 out of 5 stars Did you see it coming? I certainly did..........2004-07-02

....terrifically underrated latin actor Johnny Legs shows his acting chops in this Drug Dealer drama. Rappers Fat Joe and Treach add to the street flavor. Classic beauties Isabella Rossellini and Sonia Braga add to the exotica. The plot however really thins out when you realize Legs' character has given this hot shot investor over 3 million in cash in a suitcase...now, what would you do with alla that dough? That's right. The boy and his girl (the ueber babe/semi-actress Denise Sheen...uh...Richards) skips off to South Beach. Not too far from the Versace Mansion. From there it gets messier. What else is wrong with the film? 'Empire', the title. It leads one to believe the protagonist is gonna be so high up the ladder that he's a mover and shaker.....not a street thug. In fact, the only regal person worth of the title was the Rossellini character. Other than that, it's an alright show.

5 out of 5 stars this movie is in a class all by itself.......2004-04-22

To be honest, I didn't really think much of this movie until I saw a little bit of the movie 'Hook'd Up' that stars Malik Yoba because the girl 'Veronica' he dates caught my attention and then I went on-line later on in the day to find out that her name was Delilah Cotto and found out she was in this movie with a very key role and I decided that I was going to buy this movie. I watched it 3 days after I bought it and man, it is a very well-done motion picture. This is John Leguizamo's best movie by far. His character 'Victor Rosa' is a combination of 'Tony Montana' from 'Scarface' and 'George Jung' from 'Blow' because he's ruthless yet compassionate. Peter Sarsgaard did a great job as the rotten wall street banker, Denise Richards was actually a relevant character for once, Vincent Laresca, who played 2pac's rival 'Radames' in 'Juice', was a great fit for the role 'Jimmy' because he pretty much brings back the attitude in this movie that he had in 'Juice', Fat Joe, despite his short role, played his part real well as a rival of Victor's, and how can I forget about Treach, who is one of the best rappers ever. If the drab Oscars over-hauled their image, then this movie would get lots of Academy Awards and Treach would win the best supporting actor award for his role 'Chedda'. He's volatile and street smart and Treach was the right pick for the character because's he intense and his acting is much better than half the Hollywood pretty boys who get political star treatment such as Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCapprio. And I save the best character for last, which is 'Carmen' who is played by Delilah Cotto obviously. She is nothing like 'Elvira' from 'Scarface' or 'Mirtha' from Blow because their drug addicts who impair their brains where as Carmen wants to make a great living for herself and is pregnant with Victor's baby and she's smart enough to realize that drinking alcohol, smoking, or doing drugs will affect the pregnancy. She is also very beautiful, sweet, and compassionate. Delilah Cotto was the perfect fit for this part. This movie fires on all cylinders and the conflicts that abound for Victor are what make the movie. I don't care what the haters and critics say about this movie. They can't brain wash us fans of this great piece of work into watching corporate trash like 'A View From The Top' and 'The Hours'. Obviously the people who hate on this movie don't have a good eye for talent because this movie has a great collection of it. Any fans of Leguizamo, Cotto, Treach, Richards, or Fat Joe will love this movie. Trust me you'll love it. It's an undisputed champ like Ali.
