As a pleasant dose of holiday cheer, The Holiday is a lovable love story with all the Christmas trimmings. In the capable hands of writer-director Nancy Meyers (making her first romantic comedy since Something's Gotta Give), it all begins when two successful yet unhappy women connect through a home-swapping website, and decide to trade houses for the Christmas holiday in a mutual effort to forget their man troubles. Iris (Kate Winslet) is a London-based journalist who lives in a picture-postcard cottage in Surrey, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) owns a movie-trailer production company (leading her to cutely imagine most of her life as a "coming attraction") and lives in a posh mansion in Beverly Hills. Iris is heartbroken from unrequited love with a cad of a colleague (Rufus Sewell), and Amanda has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend (Edward Burns), so their home-swapping offers mutual downtime to reassess their love lives. This being a Nancy Meyers movie (where everything is fabulously decorated and romantic wish-fulfillment is virtually guaranteed), Amanda hooks up with Iris's charming brother Graham (Jude Law), and Iris is unexpectedly smitten with Miles (Jack Black), a super-nice film composer on the downside of a failing relationship. --Jeff Shannon

Great movie!.......2007-07-05
This movie is great! It is much better than I had expected. I thought it would be a light, cutesy, movie, but the writing and acting was superb! Far better than I had expected. There are many clever lines and the acting including great, subtle facial expressions. It is a very good movie!
Better than expected.......2007-07-03
I rented this movie online not expecting much. Too my surprise it was much better than I thought it would be.
love at first sight.......2007-07-03
There aren't too many movies that I watch and instantly fall in love with but it happened here. I saw the film, fell in love with story and the music, bought the score and had my sister join me for an encore performace... all in a single day! I'm a romantic at heart and this film was all about it. Not only that but every character was brilliantly used. From the adorable old man to the fiesty little children and of course the love story, this film is sure to touch your heart!
No Holiday.......2007-06-27
I own the movies Hitch, You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, Prime - I am a professional chick flick-er. Jude Law, Jack Black are in some of my favorite films. In my opinion, Kate Winslet is one of the most talented young actresses out there. Therefore this film should've been a perfect film for someone such as me - the film had all the right ingredients but the wrong recipe. I was very disappointed with this film. I agree with the other reviewers that the plot of the movie is not so original and is quite predictable. However, most romantic comedies ARE predictable - but what makes the good romantic comedies good is the presentation and the deliverance of the story. This film failed very much in that department. I blame it highly on the script and the editing process. Even with such beautiful people as Jude Law and Cameron Diaz on the screen, the film drags and become unbearable as it progresses. I was very sad as they had such a great cast. And it was a huge disappointment from Nancy Meyers (whose previous film - What Women Want - I enjoyed immensely).
For the romantic!.......2007-06-25
Though not a heart-wrenching love story, The Holiday is a inspiration for the romantic at heart. It causes room for doubt, then offers hope. It's cute...not too deep but still romantic and playfully pleasant. I enjoyed it...have watched it twice. My 15 year old, however, said it was boring and not worth watching. I attribute that to age and the lack of ability to understand certain innuendos.

Product Description
From producer Jerry Bruckheimer (PEARL HARBOR) comes PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, the thrilling high-seas adventure with a mysterious twist. The roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow's (Academy Award(R) Nominee Johnny Depp) idyllic pirate life capsizes after his nemesis, the wily Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), steals his ship, the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the governor's beautiful daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley). In a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl, Elizabeth's childhood friend Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) joins forces with Jack. What Will doesn't know is that a cursed treasure has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead. Rich in suspense-filled adventure, sword-clashing action, mystery, humor, unforgettable characters, and never-before-seen special effects, PIRATES is a must-have epic on the grandest scale ever.

You won't need a bottle of rum to enjoy Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, especially if you've experienced the Disneyland theme-park ride that inspired it. There's a galleon's worth of fun in watching Johnny Depp's androgynous performance as Captain Jack Sparrow, a roguish pirate who could pass for the illegitimate spawn of rockers Keith Richards and Chrissie Hynde. Depp gets all the good lines and steals the show, recruiting Orlando Bloom (a blacksmith and expert swordsman) and Keira Knightley (a lovely governor's daughter) on an adventurous quest to recapture the notorious Black Pearl, a ghost ship commandeered by Jack's nemesis Capt. Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), a mutineer desperate to reverse the curse that left him and his (literally) skeleton crew in a state of eternal, undead damnation. Director Gore Verbinski (The Ring) repeats the redundant mayhem that marred his debut film Mouse Hunt, but with the writers of Shrek he's made Pirates into a special-effects thrill-ride that plays like a Halloween party on the open seas. Aye, matey, we've come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts! --Jeff Shannon

An action movie to top the rest.......2007-06-27
The first time I watched this I fell asleep...so I didnt watch it for about 2 years then my fiance made me again and I loved it. I guess I aquired a love for pirates in the two years :). This movie takes you on a wild ride on various ships until leading up the black pearl. There were twists and turns the whole way with alot of subtle details thrown in there. All three of the main actors acted beautifully. Johnny Deep played a good role as aiding in much comedic relief. All in All a great buy.
Captain Jack Sparrow The Flamboyant Pirate........2007-06-25
I am one of those rare folks who didnt get around to seeing this movie until years after it came out. Being as the name of the movie is Pirates of the Caribbean I was expecting tough guy pirates stealing and plundering and having sword fights. I did not at all expect Captain Jack Sparrow to be a flamboyant and quite amusing pirate. Johnny Depp completely made this movie for me. His acting is fantastic and so weird you just can't look away. The story line was well thought out and the special effects are fabulous. I highly recommend you check this movie out even if you think you might not like it.
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (Two-Disc Collector's Edition).......2007-06-09
Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)~ Johnny Depp is a truly grand adventure/fantasy/pirate movie. Johnny Depp is amazing in the part of Jack Sparrow and he is the best and wackiest charachter in the entire movie. The special effects are right on the money and the action scenes are filled with loads of fun. The script is well-written and the movie never drags and one is not left with meaningless scenes that could have been removed. I love this movie and I can not wait to see the sequell.
Aar ye mattes.......2007-06-08
Once started out as a ride at disney world now became a hit movie. Which in my oppinion is an awesome movie. This is a movie the whole family will enjoy.

Love Johnny Depp in this movie, what a hottie. Great special effects. LOVE IT. Funny, Entertaining, Great for the family.

Hawaii Five-O was not your ordinary police drama. Besides the lush location of Hawaii and the unforgettably terrific theme music, the stylized characters and story lines really added a fantastic element to the show, an element missing from more mundane or "realistic" police dramas of both then and now. When you turned this show on from week to week you never knew what kind of story you were going to see. It might be a story about thieves, mobsters or murderers, but it might just as likely be about something larger or more fantastic like international spies, assassination conspiracies or the threat of biological epidemics. Even the stories dealing with common crimes were heavily stylized, often pitting the Five-O team against near super-villain type enemies. In a way, this show mixed the best of police dramas with some of the best elements of stylized spy thrillers, classic detective fiction, and even a tinge of comic book superheroes. It's as if someone took all the best elements of Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, Mission Impossible and Batman and somehow came out with a surreal blend of police melodrama and heroic fiction that is fascinating and fun to watch.

The incorruptible and larger-than-life characters of Steve McGarrett and his stalwart crew of Danny, Kono and Chin Ho made for an interesting mix. At the time this show first appeared on television, only Star Trek had as ethnically diverse and interesting a cast as this show and they were the only two shows to completely eschew ethnic stereotypes in how they used their diverse cast. The show took full advantage of the diversity and beauty of both the Hawaiian Islands as well as the local population when filming, rather than hiding it. This may have been a gamble in 1968, but it's one that happily paid off and helped pave the way for a more realistic view of our country's population on TV in years to come. Hawaii Five-O was a huge ratings success and ran for 12 seasons, forever in the world of TV. And it deserved it. Then and now, these shows are fun to watch. I already own Hawaii Five-O Season One on DVD and am enjoying it thoroughly, as is my young son who is seeing the show for the first time. I am looking forward to owning Season Two on DVD shortly and hopefully more sets after that. "Be there, aloha!"
yahoo!! keep em coming!.......2007-05-11
one of the all time great tv shows. please, please keep the releases coming!!
Long-Running Series Deserves DVD Release.......2007-05-05
Nothing lasts 12 years without having something going for it. In the case of Hawaii Five-O, it easy to dismiss it as a typically television crime drama that got lucky by finding its audience and keeping it. The same could be said for Law and Order. Except, in television years, luck usually runs out after two or three years. Gimmicks get old, the formula is figured out, and sharks are jumped so often they don't even complain.
But shows that last five years, much less 12, have to have something besides luck, gimmicks, and great scheduling. Hawaii Five-O had a number of things going for it. First of all, let's be honest. The setting was, and still is so lush and exotic that it is easily intoxicating. Hawaii is beautiful, and most people either live there or want to live there. Filming on location has always been a blessing when it's been done, and probably no more so than on this series.
Next, Jack Lord, playing Five-O chief Steve McGarrett, was one of a long line of no-nonsense law enforcement figures. The strength, integrity, and dedication of these kinds of characters cannot be overstated, and these characters will always have lots of fans rooting them on, not unlike Law and Order's Jack McCoy.
Finally, watching shows like this is always a treat because you see so many stars that were either big stars enjoying a working Hawaiian vacation, or lots of up and coming stars before they got their big break. Hawaii Five-O was a natural draw for both categories, and it's fun to watch them and remember when.
It's also fun to remember when you could look forward to hearing one of the best and most recognizable theme songs in television history. Not a small thing when you add it with the other factors. Hawaii Five-O had a lot going for it then, and it has a lot going for it now.
Bored, she hung herself finally available!.......2007-05-03
The second season of Hawaii Five O is coming to DVD. This season had great episodes such as Blind Tiger, where McGarret is blinded by a car bomb, and is helped in his recovery by a nurse played by Marion "Mrs C" Ross, Forty feet high and it kills, which featured Wo Fat for the first time since the Pilot episode, and A thousand Pardons, you're dead, which had a brief apperance by Loretta "Hot lips" Switt.
But the real highlight of this set is the episode, Bored She hung herself. It aired only once, and has never been shown in syndication. According to Rose Freeman, wife of Hawaii Five O creator Lenoard Freeman, someone attemped a hanging stunt shown in this episode, and died as a result. So it was withdrawn and never released to syndication. It has been bootlegged over the years, and it will be great to finally see it in its orginal form. Also I hope there will be more extras on this set. Thanks to Paramount for getting Season 2 on the way, and hopefully the pace of releases will pick up.

Martin Scorsese makes a welcome return to the mean streets (of Boston, in this case) with The Departed, hailed by many as Scorsese's best film since Casino. Since this crackling crime thriller is essentially a Scorsese-stamped remake of the acclaimed 2002 Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, the film was intensely scrutinized by devoted critics and cinephiles, and while Scorsese's intense filmmaking and all-star cast deserve ample acclaim, The Departed is also worthy of serious re-assessment, especially with regard to what some attentive viewers described as sloppy craftsmanship (!), notably in terms of mismatched shots and jagged continuity. But no matter where you fall on the Scorsese appreciation scale, there's no denying that The Departed is a signature piece of work from one of America's finest directors, designed for maximum impact with a breathtaking series of twists, turns, and violent surprises. It's an intricate cat-and-mouse game, but this time the cat and mouse are both moles: Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is an ambitious cop on the rise, planted in the Boston police force by criminal kingpin Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a hot-tempered police cadet who's been artificially disgraced and then planted into Costello's crime operation as a seemingly trustworthy soldier. As the multilayered plot unfolds (courtesy of a scorching adaptation by Kingdom of Heaven screenwriter William Monahan), Costigan and Sullivan conduct a volatile search for each other (they're essentially looking for "themselves") while simultaneously wooing the psychiatrist (Vera Farmiga) assigned to treat their crime-driven anxieties.
Such convenient coincidences might sink a lesser film, but The Departed is so electrifying that you barely notice the plot-holes. And while Nicholson's profane swagger is too much "Jack" and not enough "Costello," he's still a joy to watch, especially in a film that's additionally energized by memorable (and frequently hilarious) supporting roles for Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, and a host of other big-name performers. The Departed also makes clever and plot-dependent use of cell-phones, to the extent that it couldn't exist without them. Powered by Scorsese's trademark use of well-chosen soundtrack songs (from vintage rock to Puccini's operas), The Departed may not be perfect, but it's one helluva ride for moviegoers, proving popular enough to become the biggest box-office hit of Scorsese's commercially rocky career. --Jeff Shannon
On the DVD
Introduced by director Martin Scorsese, the nine deleted scenes from The Departed are all interesting to watch, though not a significant loss from the picture. The other bonus features are very good as well. "Stranger Than Fiction: The True Story of Whitey Bulger, Southie, and The Departed" is a 21-minute history of the real-life Boston gangster Jack Nicholson's character was based on. Scorsese, screenwriter William Monahan, and a number of journalists are among those interviewed. In "Crossing Criminal Cultures" (24 minutes), Scorsese and the cast discuss gangster pictures and specifically Scorsese's. Consider that a warm-up for Scorsese on Scorsese, an 86-minute documentary from 2004. (It's the only bonus feature not available on the HD DVD or Blu-ray versions.) There's no narrator or interviewer: it's just Scorsese talking about his upbringing and influences. There's a generous use of clips through The Aviator and even his American Express commercial. --David Horiuchi

Description
Rookie cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) grew up in crime. That makes him the perfect mole, the man on the inside of the mob run by boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). It's his job to win Costello's trust and help his detective handlers (Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen) bring Costello down. Meanwhile, SIU officer Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) has everyone's trust. No one suspects he's Costello's mole. How these covert lives cross, double-cross and collide is at the ferocious core of the widely acclaimed The Departed. Martin Scorsese directs, guiding a cast for the ages in a visceral tale of crime and consequences. This is searing, can't-look-away filmmaking: like staring into the eyes of a con - or a cop - with a gun.

A major let-down.......2007-07-05
I bought this DVD from Amazon some time ago and just got around to watching for the first time. As an admirer of Mr. Scorsese's past work, I was, frankly, amazed at how universally weak this film was. And to win the Oscar no less. It's clear he got the sympathy vote - well deserved for Good Fellas among others - just not for this mess. All 'tough guys'; no humor; no likable characters; plot holes to drive a truck through (ex.: what are the chances the psychologist would just happen to date both these guys?) There was so much use of cel phones, I was surprised to not find Verizon or AT&T in the producer credits. And hey, I'm no prude, but a profanity in every line? - come on. An average episode of The Sopranos is far more entertaining, and better written, than this. And the coup de grace in the film's last scene: - the rat on the balcony rail. My wife and I howled with laughter! - a laugh of disgust after being dragged through nearly 3 hours of this convoluted nightmare. I was glad all the principals were shot dead, so there could be no sequel.
Good but not great.......2007-07-04
There are things I liked about Martin Scorcese's The Departed - it's grittiness, the tough, Irish Boston atmosphere, the dialogue, most of the performances (particularly Alec Baldwin, Ray Winstone, DiCaprio and MATT DAMON) and the plot which, despite some holes, is engaging. Having said all that, The Departed is good but far from great. Why? It's shallow, none of the characters have any real depth to them, it's flabby and bloated, Jack Nicholson is basically on over-the-top , one-dimensional cruise control, and the closing shot of the film with the rat is completely unnecessary and possibly one of the most clumsiest attempts at symbolism I've ever seen in a film. I also think the camera work was good, but wasn't up to par with Scorcese's previous work, and the quick editing bothered me after a while. I think the most disappointing thing about the Departed is that after you finish it you're entertained but at the same time you're left feeling that the film should and could easily be a lot better than it is. 3 1/2 stars out of five.
Good Film.......2007-07-01
The Departed was good. But it was not the "best film" (that goes to Babel). But the acting was good and it was a fun movie to watch. Very gory and the ending is something shocking, but I liked it overall
The Godfather Part 15.......2007-06-28
I love Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon and they both kicked butt in this movie, but haven't I seen this almost exact plot line before? I swear that the same idea's about the same gangster type deals are being recycled out in Hollywood. While this movie was fun to watch, the tired old "Godfather" act really losing it's touch. The original Godfather movies still hold up to today's crap, and even this is enjoyable, but PLEASE make some more unique films!!!

This movie is great if you have about two hours to pay close attention. Compared to Goodfellas among other ganster movies it is a modern version. The cast is full of familiar faces and interesting swirls of how the individual characters connect. At the end your jaw will be in your lap!! You will not believe this ending! It's worth buying just to have in your collection, but even more so just to see the ending!!

Arguably the greatest black comedy ever made, Stanley Kubrick's cold-war classic is the ultimate satire of the nuclear age. Dr. Strangelove is a perfect spoof of political and military insanity, beginning when General Jack D. Ripper (Sterling Hayden), a maniacal warrior obsessed with "the purity of precious bodily fluids," mounts his singular campaign against Communism by ordering a squadron of B-52 bombers to attack the Soviet Union. The Soviets counter the threat with a so- called "Doomsday Device," and the world hangs in the balance while the U.S. president (Peter Sellers) engages in hilarious hot-line negotiations with his Soviet counterpart. Sellers also plays a British military attaché and the mad bomb-maker Dr. Strangelove; George C. Scott is outrageously frantic as General Buck Turgidson, whose presidential advice consists mainly of panic and statistics about "acceptable losses." With dialogue ("You can't fight here! This is the war room!") and images (Slim Pickens's character riding the bomb to oblivion) that have become a part of our cultural vocabulary, Kubrick's film regularly appears on critics' lists of the all-time best. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT PARODY ON SUPERPOWER GOVERNMENTS.......2007-07-06
This work is a wonderful parody on how the so called super powers of the world (past or present) poster themselves.
It shows all that although the governments may try to be oh so serious, they end up looking like bumbling idiots falling all over each other with the ultimate destruction of all as a result.
Riding the bomb rodeo style was a nice touch - GREAT WORK!
Dr. Strangelove.......2007-06-27
The most inspired piece of Cold War satire ever and one of the screen's supreme black comedies, Kubrick's 1964 "Strangelove" confronted jittery audiences in the aftermath of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and not long after the advent of the H bomb. With Kubrick's twisted genius as director and screenwriter in full bloom, and peerless performances by Peter Sellers (in three roles), Scott, and the unhinged Hayden, the film is unbearably funny and extremely disturbing all at once.
One of the Great Black Comedies.......2007-06-21
This work doesn't need much explaination. It is a true classic black comedy. It uses humaor to show how ludicrous and easily corrupted our governments truly are. It simultaneously shines a homorous and frightening light on nuclear war. In my opinion, this is well worth your time. And if you are interested in nuclear war, World War III or end times works, I highly recommend the book Mysteries of the Universe... it is shocking, controversial and frightening! Here's tha amazon page link: Mysteries of the Universe: A Revolutionary Commentary on UFOs, Aliens, Angels, Pyramids, Bible Codes, Reincarnation, the Antichrist...
Watch This Movie and Sleep Better At Night .......2007-06-12
This movie offers the best tongue and cheek commentary on the absurdities of war. I am sure this movie has been heavily "borrowed" from by Hollywood. The "Survival Kit Content Check" scene reminded me alot about the more recent "duct tape your windows" survival tactics. If you believe that the end of the world will come in a flash of light, this movie will validate you.
Peter Sellers heads up a great cast.......2007-06-08
Peter Sellers heads up a great cast in a very funny movie. Worth having in your Peter Sellers collection!

Blarney and bliss, mixed in equal proportions. John Wayne plays an American boxer who returns to the Emerald Isle, his native land. What he finds there is a fiery prospective spouse (Maureen O'Hara) and a country greener than any Ireland seen before or since--it's no surprise The Quiet Man won an Oscar for cinematography. It also won an Oscar for John Ford's direction, his fourth such award. The film was a deeply personal project for Ford (whose birth name was Sean Aloysius O'Fearna), and he lavished all of his affection for the Irish landscape and Irish people on this film. He also stages perhaps the greatest donnybrook in the history of movies, an epic fistfight between Wayne and the truculent Victor McLaglen--that's Ford's brother, Francis, as the elderly man on his deathbed who miraculously revives when he hears word of the dustup. Barry Fitzgerald, the original Irish elf, gets the movie's biggest laugh when he walks into the newlyweds' bedroom the morning after their wedding, and spots a broken bed. The look on his face says everything. The Quiet Man isn't the real Ireland, but as a delicious never-never land of Ford's imagination, it will do very nicely. --Robert Horton

The Quiet Man DVD.......2007-07-04
The DVD showed up within the time frame in mint condition. I was very satisfied with the service.
The Quiet Man.......2007-06-27
Immortal director Ford directed this Oscar-winning valentine to his ancestral home, a love story that soars thanks to Ford's resplendent shooting and a solid, flavorful performance from the Duke. O'Hara radiates an untamed red-haired beauty playing Wayne's love interest, while McLaglen is a joy as the blustery Red Will.
Commentary by Maureen O'Hara is wonderful.......2007-05-31
The commentary by Maureen O'Hara is wonderful. I've seen this movie many times over the years but never knew the many stories and facts that Miss O'Hara reveals in the two hours of commentary. Her memory is remarkable and her comments are charming.
Our Family's Favorite.......2007-05-28
The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)
This has been an all time favorite of our family for years. Perhaps because it is set in Ireland, or because we are all of Irish descent; or just because it is just a great story and very well made. In any case it is a movie for the whole family to watch and even though it is a classic, it seems like it was made recently.
It will pull on all of the emotions, bringing out laughter, cheering, and tears. The guys will be drawn by the great male cast, the women by the romance and the children by the fun. It is truly for all genders and ages.

Description
Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg star in Martin Scorsese's new crime drama "The Departed." "The Departed" is set in South Boston where the state police force is waging an all-out war to take down the city's top organized crime ring. The key is to end the reign of powerful mob boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson) from the inside. A young rookie, Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate Costello's mob. While Billy is working to gain Costello's trust, another young cop, Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) is among a handful of elite officers whose mission is to bring Costello down. But what his superiors don't know is that Colin is working for Costello, keeping the crime boss one step ahead of the police. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operation he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the gangsters and the police that they have a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin find themselves in constant danger of being caught-and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself.

Roman Polanski's brooding film noir exposes the darkest side of the land of sunshine, the Los Angeles of the 1930s, where power is the only currency--and the only real thing worth buying. Jack Nicholson is J.J. Gittes, a private eye in the Chandler mold, who during a routine straying-spouse investigation finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a jigsaw puzzle of clues and corruption. The glamorous Evelyn Mulwray (a dazzling Faye Dunaway) and her titanic father, Noah Cross (John Huston), are at the black-hole center of this tale of treachery, incest, and political bribery. The crackling, hard-bitten script by Robert Towne won a well-deserved Oscar, and the muted color cinematography makes the goings-on seem both bleak and impossibly vibrant. Polanski himself has a brief, memorable cameo as the thug who tangles with Nicholson's nose. One of the greatest, most completely satisfying crime films of all time. --Anne Hurley
Customer Reviews:
Chinatown.......2007-07-03
Cynical, brooding, and knotted with mystery, Polanski's "Chinatown" is not just one of the best films ever made about the City of Angels, earning a dozen Oscar nominations--it's also one of the most superbly crafted, post-`40s noirs you'll ever see. The cast, of course, can't be beat: Dunaway is at once jittery, seductive and impenetrable, while Jack is at the top of his game as the Chandleresque former cop Jake. Real-life legendary director John Huston also delivers a titanic performance as the arrogant Cross. Watch for Polanski himself as a knife-wielding thug with a grudge against nosy people.
Twists & Turns.......2007-06-07
"Chinatown" is an amazing piece of film that grows richer as it grows older. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, only winning one for Robert Towne's Best Original Screenplay. John Alonzo, who was nominated for Best Cinematography, sets a sheen & sparkle to the vintage look of the film. The soundtrack is also brilliant. It was nominated for Best Picture but lost to "The Godfather Part II."
While "Chinatown" did not do well @ the Oscars, it was the Golden Globe winner for Best Drama and also brought Roman Polanski a Best Director Golden Globe award. Roman Polanski has done many classics including his other Oscar nominations as Best Director for Rosemary's Baby & "Tess" to his 2002 Oscar win for The Pianist. "Chinatown's detractors say that the pacing is slow, but I find that it builds intensity as each piece of the puzzle is revealed and somehow doesn't fit or indicates that there is more to the puzzle.
As Jake "J.J." Gittes, Jack Nicholson has never been better. His demeanor that leads you to think he never takes anything seriously is contained, with just enough wiseacre to make him endearing. Nicholson brought home the Golden Globe as Best Actor but lost the Oscar to surprise winner Art Carney for Harry and Tonto in a field that also had Al Pacino for "Godfather Part II," Dustin Hoffman for "Lenny" & "Albert Finney in "Murder on the Orient Express." As Gittes, we watch Nicholson twist and squirm. The scene where Roman Polanski slits Gittes' nose is brutal and remains emphasized as Nicholson plays following scenes with a big bandage on the middle of his face.
Faye Dunaway received her second Oscar nomination for this film. Her performance is incredibly controlled, but throbbing with the underlying secrets of her past and conditioned by the opulence of her wealth. She lost the Oscar to Ellen Burstyn for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.
The film's large cast is peppered with faces we had seen or later saw frequently. Darrell Zwerling whose career spanned the decade was also seen in "High Anxiety," "Grease" & "Capricorn One." As Dunaway's husband Hollis, he remains bespectacled & without dialogue for much of the picture until his character's tragic demise. John Huston's legendary career is reflected in the shadow of his presence on screen as the family patriarch Noah Cross. Perry Lopez plays detective Lou Escobar in his most memorable film. John Hillerman, who would play prominently on TV from 1980-1988 in "Magnum P.I.," plays Yelburton, the assistant water commissioner. Diane Ladd plays Ida Sessions, the fake Mrs. Mulray. Ladd picked up a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" that same year & was later nominated for "Wild at Heart" in 1990 and "Rambling Rose" in 1991. Burt Young who would be Oscar nominated for his character Paulie in "Rocky" in 1976 plays Curly who Gittes helps with marital matters. James Hong who played prominently in 1994's film The Shadow appears stoically as Mrs. Mulray's butler. "Chinatown" picks us up and carries us through to the ending, surprising with twists & turns. It is classic cinema. Bravo!
Great Jack Nicholson as Humphrey Bogart type pi.......2007-05-25
Great actors, script, and direction. Very good film noir technique. Can seen several times. The details are great.
Very Good.......2007-05-13
GO on seeing the movie until u are twisted by the twist given by the director
Classic Film Noir. .......2007-04-15
You're going to spend the majority of this movie wondering why it has the title it does and I'm not going to spoil it for you by mentioning it, but what I will say is that it has one of the great surprise endings in the history of Hollywood. The plot is outstanding and it's hard to tell where its going based on the first hour alone. Nicholson is superlative in the role of J.J. Gittes. His performance is nearly as good as Bogart's was in The Maltese Falcon. Dunaway and Houston are outstanding as well. Chinatown is every bit as entertaining as it is excellent.

Reba: The Complete First Season gathers all 22 episodes of the popular WB sitcom's 2001 debut, an unusual and likable comedy about a family meltdown that results, over time, in stronger ties between principal characters. The pilot episode's opening scene puts it all on the table: A court-mandated, family therapy session in which one learns that Reba Hart (Reba McEntire) and estranged husband Brock (Christopher Hart) have broken up after 20 years of marriage, Brock's mistress Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman) is pregnant, and the Harts' 17-year-old daughter, Cheyenne (Joanna Garcia), and her high school football hero boyfriend, Van (Steve Howey), are also expecting. From these overlapping disaster come many fireworks, but Reba is really about the gradual reinvention of the Harts and the qualities of mercy, understanding, and rebuilt faith.
At the center of everything is Reba, who put Brock through dental school, had a trio of kids with him, then loses him, inexplicably, to sweet but simple-minded Barbra Jean, a hygienist. Yet he isn't really gone: Brock's emotional ties to Reba remain powerful, and he is often full of regret over whatever is driving him away. More challenging is Barbra Jean's needful attachment to Reba, which gets particularly difficult when the former keeps turning up at sensitive times, such as a visit from Reba's parents (Barry Corbin, Dorothy Lyman) and during Cheyenne's Lamaze classes. While coping with her own divorce, Reba keeps busy helping Cheyenne and Van set up their lives as newlyweds, a tricky business since both are still in high school and so many people--the principal, Van's parents, Reba's neighbors--disapprove and assume the worst about the Harts' morals. Still, every episode ends with the feeling that everything is going to be okay in Reba's world, even if she has no idea where so much change is taking her. Country superstar McEntire proves a very capable and attractive comic lead, and the rest of the cast, including Mitch Holleman and Scarlett Pomers as Reba's youngest kids, are caught up in Reba's appealing chaos. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
I love this show!.......2007-06-26
Reba is so funny. We don't have cable and since all these great shows are coming out on DVD I took the opportunity to purchase Season 1 & 2 with the free shipping. I need Season 3 & 4 now. I am sad to hear her show was cancelled and just hope they give it an ending instead of just having no closure. If there was 20 Seasons I would buy them all, if you love Reba or comedy shows this one would be right up your alley!
I highly approve of this series!
BJ and Reba.......2007-06-10

Description:
When your husband of twenty years divorces you for a woman half his age, it's time to move on to Plan B. For Reba Hart (Reba McEntire), that means not only accepting that her marriage is over, but also accepting that her ex's new wife is pregnant. If that isn't disruptive enough, Reba learns that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant too. So it's out with the old and in with the new as hubby leaves and son-in-law arrives. With al the outrageous domestic obstacles thrown in her path, Reba realizes one thing for sure: life will never be the same in this dysfunctional household!
Undemanding Lovers of Family Sitcoms Such As "Full House", "Step-By-Step", "Family Matters" Etc. Are Likely To Enjoy!.......2007-05-31
It seem like most of us can agree that Reba McEntire (those who were at all familiar with the name before this show rolled around) is a far, far, better singer than she ever will be an actress. However, with that said I still feel that she does a pretty fair job playing the role of Reba Hart in this show (a feisty, hard-working, hard-loving, fiercely proud and even more fiercely opinionated, divorced and now single Texan mother of three) especially when you take into consideration that McEntire had had little to no acting experience before this show. If you can manage to overlook such things as it's oft hokey writing, goofy and seriously stereotyped supporting characters, super-cheesy one-liners that seems to annoy so many, and in particular the occasional over-acting by virtually all of it's actors (Reba included), you'll more than likely find a very warm and obviously well-meaning (despite what some hatefull reveiwers before me think) little family sitcom that has a tendency to grow on you after a while, or at least it did me! Of course it's not too likely to ever go down in history as the most groundbreaking of all sitcoms considering it openly borrows from so many other highly respected and more popular shows. Although, it is one that I imagine undemanding lovers of family sitcoms such as "Full House", "Step-By-Step", "Family Matters" and the like will no doubt enjoy.
Hillarious Cast.......2007-04-12
I never watched the show when it was on but I now catchg reruns on lifetime. Its a truly laugh out loud feelgood show. I reccomend to anyone.

Reba: Season 2 stays the course set in the first season, with sitcom star (and country music legend) Reba McEntire playing a divorced mom (named Reba Hart) trying to get her bearings after her dentist husband, Brock (Christopher Hart), leaves her to take up with his simple but sweet-natured hygenist, Barbra Jean (Melissa Peterman). That's still only part of the heroine's troubles. Her 17-year-old daughter, Cheyenne (Joanna Garcia), and the latter's teenage husband, Van (Steve Howey), are living in Reba's house with their infant, while Reba's younger daughter Kyra (Scarlett Pomers) is maturing at an unnerving clip and son Jake (Mitch Holleman) frequently loses out when it comes to mom's attention. None of that is as crazy-making, however, as Barbra Jean's naive overtures to Reba for sisterly friendship--when the new Mrs. Hart and Brock move into a house near Reba's, Barbra Jean can't wait to visit Brock's ex-wife often. Very often.
With these new and reconfigured relationships fixed in place, the dust is settling in season 2. Now comes the really hard part: pinching pennies while trying to teach the profligate, clueless Cheyenne and Van that they don't have the scratch to get an apartment or spend money on non-essentials. Or interviewing for jobs for which Reba clearly has no experience. Or trying to hold onto Kyra's loyalty when what the girl wants is more of dad. The seriousness of these running issues speaks for itself, forming a strong foundation for a show whose humor is understandably biting without being off-putting. McEntire and the rest of the cast are consistently strong and funny, while Peterman continues to stand out in her somewhat broader performance. (Peterman's comic assuredness sometimes reminds one of Lucille Ball.) Lots of life lessons in this show, but a lot of disciplined if gentle comedy as well. --Tom Keogh

Description:
Reba Hart (Reba McEntire) knew divorce wasn't going to be easy - she just hadn't anticipated how much her ex-husband's new wife would want to be part of "the family." On top of that, Reba learns that her married daughter isn't going to be moving out of the house with her new husband and baby daughter as planned. Now, with no breadwinner in the house, Reba realizes she'd rather accept a job working for her ex-husband than apply for food stamps. But no mater how hard she tries to make family life run smoothly, Reba soon realizes there's just no darn way to please everyone!
