Blessed by casual charm and sophisticated wit, Kissing Jessica Stein does for same-sex romance what Annie Hall did for straight neurotics. The influence of Woody Allen is keenly felt on this resourceful New York comedy (expanded from an off-Broadway play), especially when cowriter and costar Jennifer Westfeldt channels Diane Keaton's "la-di-da" nervousness as Jessica Stein, a romantically frustrated heterosexual copyeditor who impulsively answers a personal ad from a bisexual woman. Helen (cowriter Heather Juergensen) is as relaxed about lesbian love as Jessica is anxious, but they click as lovers, and so does the movie's delightful exploration of their budding relationship, which is further complicated by Jessica's yenta-like mother (Tovah Feldshuh) and a former boyfriend (Scott Cohen) who's now Jessica's boss. While acknowledging the serious repercussions of Jessica's bisexual flirtation, Kissing Jessica Stein takes its characters on a smart, compassionate journey of self-discovery that's as truthfully observant as it is gently entertaining. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The best romantic comedy of '02.......2007-05-26

"Kissing Jessica Stein" features no major (or even minor) stars, a low budget (about $1 million), and a taboo topic. But the film, which never would have been made without the perseverance of screenwriters and co-stars Heather Juergensen and Jennifer Westfeldt, is a refreshing mix of quirky indie spirit and classic romantic-comedy sentiment.

Westfeldt plays Jessica Stein, a neurotic New York copy editor who's fed up with the dating game. If having her overprotective Jewish mother set her up with undesirable suitors wasn't bad enough, she also has to deal with one bad date after another, not to mention working for her ex-boyfriend (a solid Scott Cohen).

The movie gets off to a somewhat rocky star, with the humor coming across as forced and the scenarios boasting a been-there-seen-that feel.

Fortunately, when Jessica decides to answer a personal ad in the "Women Seeking Women" section, the film takes off. The first date between Jessica and Helen Cooper (Heather Juergensen), a downtown hipster with bisexual preferences, is beautifully written and acted. Jessica's gradual transition from feeling awkward to being intrigued is completely believable.

From then on out, with the exception of a few minor lapses, "Kissing Jessica Stein" is a fresh and funny romantic comedy that explores the ups and downs of the blossoming relationship between Jessica and Helen. Juergensen and Westfeldt, aided by a solid supporting cast, deliver plenty of laughs. Case in point: a highly amusing scene in which Jessica and Helen prod two unknowing, would-be male suitors into telling them why two women together are so sexy.

But "Kissing Jessica Stein" isn't all light laughs. With the help of director Charles Herman-Wurmfeld, Juergensen and Westfeldt dig into some highly effective dramatic scenes that round out the characters and give the film a little more depth. A nicely shot scene in which the two quarrel about Jessica's unwillingness to tell her family and friends about their lesbian relationship packs a powerful emotional wallop. Ditto a heartfelt exchange between Jessica and her mom late in the film.

While director Herman-Wurmfeld does a fine job of making this low-budget pic look like its budget is much larger, he wisely leaves the focus on the actors and the film's excellent script. Westfeldt, who brings to mind an indie Lisa Kudrow, digs beyond sitcom superficiality to find the longing beneath Jessica's perfectionist leanings. The charismatic Juergensen, tough yet vulnerable, is superb as Helen -- keep your eye on this promising actress.

It's a kick to see two talented young women sticking it to the male-dominated movie scene and creating a top-notch film through their perseverance and talent. Anyone who enjoys a good romantic comedy and understands how rarely they come along won't want to miss "Kissing Jessica Stein."

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-05-18

It's about a very conservative/neurotic woman who's fed up with men, and on a whim decides to try dating a woman instead. An all around good movie. It made me laugh, almost made me cry... I think they could've done a little more with the ending, but I thought it was still pretty good. It's even a good movie to have your boyfriend/husband watch with you(not super-girly). I would recommend this movie to just about anyone.

5 out of 5 stars love it.......2007-03-22

i think i am being a bit bias, but i love this movie. the seller sent it out relatively quickly as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Love Story.......2007-01-14

A lesbian love story, Kissing Jessica Stein is cute and sweet. Jessica is fed up of crappy dates with crappy men, so she takes a chance on a personal ad and begins dating Helen. Jessica finds everything she ever wanted in Helen, but keeps the relationship a secret because Jessica's not a lesbian. The relationship eventually deteriorates, but the experience gives Jessica a new outlook on life.

4 out of 5 stars A heart-felt, somewhat disturbing, romantic comedy...with lesbians........2006-08-29

The movie "Kissing Jessica Stein" is at once a silly comedy, a disturbing look at sexual frustration, misanthropic relations with fellow humans, and promiscuity.

The character of Jessica Stein is a woman too smart, and too neurotic, for her own good. She feels that she knows herself so well that she has no reason to try anything outside the norm of her everyday routine. She doesn't really understand how to respond to men who are interested in her and the beginning of the movie paints the majority of men as sniveling, unintelligent, selfish creatures. I'm sure a large number of men have these undesirable qualities, but I assure you, we are not all this way. After going through these stereotypical, mildly amusing, but altogether badly written characters that are supposed to represent the dating scene of the time our love lost heroine is embattling her way through loneliness.

Enter Helen. A woman who is lost in a triangle of sexual intensity, bordering on promiscuous. A woman who also knows enough about life to understand that selfishness is something that is a natural part of the world, and therefore acceptable. In a conversation within the movie, and I won't spoil anything too much, Jessica makes a comment about a group of people behaving selfishly because of their pursuit of spiritual enlightenment and happiness and Helen responds with, "They're just doing their thing. Some people smoke pot, some people chant."

The most interesting aspect to the movie is that fact that it was written by Jennifer Westfeldt and Heather Juergensen, or Jessica Stein and Helen Cooper, respectively. The acting in the movie is, for the most part, wonderful. Jennifer Westfeldt's ditzy, air-headed-yet-intelligent personae in the film will get on your nerves every ten or fifteen minutes, but she presents the character in a believable manner. The one-face-for-every-emotion approach by Heather Juergensen would seem to be something horrible, but, for some strange reason, works. She uses the same face throughout the movie, but it actually conveys every emotion that she is trying to portray. Throw in totally believable performances by Scott Cohen as Josh Myers, the jerk ex-boyfriend of Jessica, Jackie Hoffman, as Jessica's loud best-friend and all the other actors/actresses in the film and you have quite a nice little comedy. I give it a 4.

Bruce Willis's first starring vehicle was this 1987 comedy by Blake Edwards (Victor/Victoria), in which the actor plays a yuppie set up on a blind date with a beautiful blonde (Kim Basinger). Everything goes swimmingly until Willis does what he was warned not to do: give the lady alcohol, which causes her to get entirely out of control. The one-note joke basically turns the film into a succession of set pieces in which Willis has to keep up with Basinger, bail her out of trouble, or get out of the way of her hotheaded former boyfriend (John Larroquette). Willis is fine, Basinger is impressively unhinged, Larroquette is hilarious, and Phil Hartman has a nice role as the friend who set up Willis's evening from hell. The slapstick shtick is classic Edwards, but the film is not Edwards at his most inspired. Consider Blind Date the work of a good filmmaker in a holding pattern. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars WHOA!.......2007-06-25

The sight of Bruce Willis slipping on golf balls brings a tear to my eye every time. I love Blake Edwards, always have, always will. He has made some bombs (any Pink Panther movie after Peter Sellers died, for example), yet Blind Date, as far as it is from being as funny as Sellers' Pink Panther movies, The Party (also with Sellers), Breakfast at Tiffany's, and so on, is an entertaining movie and has many clever moments.
The plot, anyway, concerns workaholic Walter (Bruce Willis, pre-DIE HARD and very funny), who is bucking for a promotion and soon finds he needs a date for a dinner with his boss and a Japanese client they are representing. His brother-in-law (the always reliable late Phil Hartman)recommends Nadia (Kim Basinger), who is a sweet girl, until you get her drunk. Pish posh, says Walter, and down the hatch goes the champagne. Soon she is wrecking the dinner party, getting Walter fired, getting his car destroyed, and ultimately getting him arrested, mostly thanks to her psychotic ex-bpyfriend David (John Larroquette, basically reprising his STRIPES character and doing a fine job at it). From there Walter has to crash David and Nadia's wedding (long story), but not before some sneaking around David's parents' mansion (which Edwards can direct like no one else).
So slapstick? Check. Romance? Check. Bad '80s music? ...Sigh, check. Yeah, you'd think combining the two things he does best (pratfalls and romance) would make a masterpiece, but his fine eye for what's funny and Dale Launer's (also behind My Cousin Vinny, Ruthless People, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, three admittedly better movies) witty script make a funny movie to watch on a boring night. Just watch out for that music. Poor Henry Mancini can't even write good '80s music.

1 out of 5 stars Moronic.......2006-07-21

The so-called humor in this embarrassingly awful and unfunny movie is so uncreative and moronic. It is apparently for a demographic of viewers with an extremely childish sense of humor. A three year old will laugh at anything. Every turn of the plot is stupid. This is in the running for the worst movie ever made. I don't trust the taste of anyone who actually was impressed by this horse manure. I hope that Bruce Willis would have the class to turn down a role like this if he was offered it now. I think he is a very good actor. It's a shame what kind of garbage he had to be in, to get his career going.

5 out of 5 stars Ever feel that you are in a Dave Barry skit?.......2006-05-29

If you are familiar with Dave Barry "DAVE BARRY'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO GUYS", you will recognize his formula of starting out with some innocuous statement about a neutral subject and it builds up slowly and logically to make you thing that something totally ridicules is plausible.

Walter Davis (Bruce Willis) is required to bring a date to a company function. A relative (Phil Hartman) know for finding weird blind dates seems to have located the perfect date Nadia Gates (Kim Basinger;) the only caveat is that she is unstable when liberated. Walter was warned.

Naturally the warning must be an exaggeration as we all get a little tipsy. Nope it was right on the money. Nadia who also gives warning goes from polite to helpful to very helpful. To top this off she is being doggedly followed by a psychotic cop ex-boyfriend (John Larroquette.) This is just for starters.

"Do you recognize me? I used to be a respectable citizen. I had a good job and a promising future. I made only one mistake - I went on a blind date. ...Anyone got $10,000 for bail?"

5 out of 5 stars A COMEDY WORTH SEEING!!!.......2006-04-20

It has been awhile since I have seen this movie. The first time was in the theatre when it came out with my family. Since then I had seen it at Blockbuster and picked it up for the heck of it. I forgot how funny this movie was. And the most overlooked performance has to be by the late Phil Hartman (Ted Davis). What a comic he was! He had joined SNL in 1986 so I'm guessing this was one of his first movies after joining the show. Bruce Willis (Walter Davis) & Kim Basinger (Nadia Gates) do an equally good job of acting like a couple who are smitten with each other (when they aren't drunk, that is.) Adding to the laughs is Stephanie Faracy (The Great Outdoors) as Susie Davis, Walter's sister-in-law, John Larroquette (of Night Court) as Nadia's ex-crazed boyfriend David Bedford, and William Daniels (Boy Meets World) as Judge Harold Bedford, David's father. This is a great movie for a Friday night. It was just as much fun pointing out the cameos from Billy Vera & Stanley Jordan. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did!

4 out of 5 stars Funny Bruce.......2005-09-20

This is a great Bruce Willis comedy from the 80s. Far from the big action movies that Bruce is so well known for, movie will entertain everyone with its comedy and hijinks. My only complaint about this movie is there are a few, just a few, parts in this movie that seem a little slow, otherwise prepare to laugh out loud.

After being unexpectedly dumped by her dream boyfriend, Lucy (Monica Potter, Along Came a Spider) wants to hide away in her apartment--but her friends set her up with a series of blind dates: a shy entomologist (John Hannah, Sliding Doors), a sensual playwright (Gael Garcia Bernal, Y Tu Mamá También), a hunky doctor (David Boreanaz, Angel), a self-centered baseball player (Anthony LaPaglia, Lantana), and a bickering businessman (Henry Thomas, All the Pretty Horses). We know she ends up marrying one of these five guys; trying to figure out which one, as the dates unfold in flashbacks, makes the movie engaging--up to a point. The script loses focus and Potter, though pretty, is too bland to sustain interest (though it should be said that she shows more flair in I'm with Lucy than in her previous romantic comedy efforts, such as the laughably bad Head Over Heels). --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I'm With Lucy.......2007-01-27

Kinda quirky, and lots of different characters. Would have liked to see the plot going in better direction, but it's okay. Actors doing roles you don't normally see.

3 out of 5 stars I'm With Lucy.......2006-11-11

I thought this was a really sweet chick flick. Great for a rainy afternoon with no men around. It shows just how hard it is to get back in the dating pool after a bad breakup. It also proves that first impressions aren't always right. Give a guy a chance and he just might be the right one if not the perfect one.

3 out of 5 stars she picked the wrong guy.......2005-11-22

This movie would have been a lot better if Lucy had picked a different guy. She managed to end up with the least attractive, second-most annoying one of her dates, and they had absolutely no chemistry. In a romance movie, the viewer likes to identify with the characters, and I think this movie didn't do well because no one wanted to end be in Lucy's shoes at the end. Like some of the other reviewers, I initially decided to watch this movie for a chance to see Gael Garcia Bernal, but it was Anthony LaPaglia's performance and character that charmed me. What started off as an abysmal date actually turned out pretty well, and Bobby and Lucy had some of the funniest exchanges of the movie, and they had good chemistry. I wanted to see more of them together.

3 out of 5 stars 'Five Boys Meet Girl' or Vice Versa: Interesting Idea, Lovely Monica Potter, But ... Needs Something More .......2005-11-14

If you have seen the thriller `Along Came the Spider,' you must remember Monica Potter as supporting role beside Morgan Freeman. The film itself turns out far from a success, but actually, she is much better, and looks more natural in romantic comedy, and `I'm with Lucy' easily proves that. This lesser-known film is not going to make her famous, I regret, but it is still worth a look for her charms.

The idea is both simple and complex at the same time. Lucy meets five men in a year, and we are told in the first 10 minutes that she is going to marry one of them. They are Doug, Gabriel, Bobby, Barry and Luke, played by John Hannah, Gael Garcia Bernal, Anthony LaPaglia, Henry Thomas, and David Boreanaz respectively. So who is going to be Mr. Right for Lucy? (By the way, there is a man No.6 Peter played by Craig Bierko who appears briefly in the opening. Could be a dark horse, or not.)

So simple. And complex. `With `I'm with Lucy' writer Eric Pomerance attempts to break the familiar rules of romantic comedy, but despite its interesting idea, I don't think it works. The reason is just this: characters. Five male characters are all stock type, and few of them are round enough to show the depth. Some of the actors are also typecast. John Hannah is Mr. Nice Guy, and Hannah has played similar roles in the past (see `Sliding Doors' for instance) and Gael Garcia Bernal is a sexy guy with Latin background again.

Still it is joyful to watch Monica Potter as Lucy who, in spite of her peculiar propensity for blundering, is likable all through the film. Surprisingly her acting becomes very touching when Lucy shows unexpected subtlety in her character - see when she leaves one of the dates, both knowing that they would never meet again. This sad scene (which reminds me of one brief meeting of Hugh Grant and Emily Mortimer in `Notting Hill') shows the brilliance of the actors, but that is when we are reminded of the fact that we don't need as many as five dates to make one good romantic comedy.

With all good intention, good acting, and very good-natured heroine, the concept of `I'm with Lucy' is too ambitious for romantic comedy, which has strict rule - that is `Boy Meets Girl' & `Girl Meets Boy.' Five boys are good to make one good comedy, but you don't need five boys to write one good romantic story. Still, I love Monica Potter's Lucy, and three stars go to her.

4 out of 5 stars Untitled.......2005-10-26

This movie was great. I saw this film 4 days ago and by the time the half part finished, I was engrossed. It really makes a great addition to someone's collection and I'd recommend you buy it. I'm giving it 4 stars only because it was a little predictable. Of course she's gonna marry the guy who ran to 10 different stores for her medicine!

3 out of 5 stars A fun romp.......2007-05-13

I came across this movie by chance last night, and I really enjoyed it. Sassy, classy Woo (who seems to miraculously know all the right people in all the right and wrong places) is bent on jerking around her blind date, uptight lawyer-wannabe Tim. Bitter over being treated like an object, she's out to teach the man (any man, in fact) a lesson. And while she does put Tim and his friends through their paces during this first date from hell, Tim also inspires Woo to take the chip off of her shoulder for at least a little while to give love a chance.

Woo and Tim's adventures are interspersed with scenes from the goofy love life of Woo's cousin and Tim's best friend, the couple who set up the blind date in the first place. They are desperate to get Woo out of the way so they can indulge in a night of no-holds-barred passion. While some of these scenes are wicked funny, that particular sub-plot disappears towards the end of the movie without any particular resolution. This was a bit of a disappointment, but I guess the director/editors decided they couldn't top the "chicken ho" bit and opted to leave well enough alone. After that, the focus of the movie sticks to setting up Woo and Tim's "happily ever after." (Was even hoping for something in the credits that would wrap up that storyline, but no such luck.)

All in all, this movie was an entertaining romp, and not a bad way to spend part of an evening.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Hysterical!.......2006-06-21

After eight years of ignoring this movie - primarily due to the negative reviews it got - I finally got to see it the other night on TV. I laughed non-stop. It's a typical story of a blind date that seems doomed for failure but ends in romance. As saccharine as the end of the movie may be and as cynical and jaded I may well be, I'm not ashamed to say I had tears in my eyes as the end credits rolled. I thought it was great. Not all movies are made to answer some of life's most puzzling questions. Not all movies are supposed to be 'intelligent' or 'thought-provoking'. Not all movies are made to change the world. Some movies are made for us to be able to sit back for one and a half hours, forget all our troubles and just have a good scream. This is one of those movies and I'm getting the DVD. I can't wait to watch it again.

All my favourite comedy actors are here: Jada of course (looking as lovely as I've ever seen her), Dave Chapelle, Duane Martin, Paula Jai Parker, Aida Turturro, LL Cool J and Dartanyan Edmonds. Even Foxy Brown makes an appearance and it's not too bad either.

But most of all, there's Tommy Davidson. Ah, Tommy Davidson. Not everyone's cup of tea, apparently, but he always does it for me.

If this movie taught me one lesson it's to let reviews INFORM my decisions on what movies to see and buy, and not to let them influence them. This is definitely one for the collection!

4 out of 5 stars This film is good........2004-09-20

I believe that this is a very funny film. Chappelle(sp?), Davidson, Pinkett-Smith. This is a very peaceful film because all the shots are done at night.

I can't remember much except for the chicken scene and the restaurant. It's almost as if I was sleeping, but watching the movie.

Films at night seem to bring peace to me for some reason. This one and Men At Work(Charlie Sheen and Emelio Esteves).

Well, to close, I wanted to say both of these movies are great, they seem to hit the right nerve for comedy.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of film.......2004-02-26

I'm sorry, but this movie was NOT good at all. There were some moments where I chuckled, but this movie really was WOOOOOOO TERRIBLE. Wait for it to come on TV.

5 out of 5 stars Woo-Wee.......2003-11-24

I absolutely love this movie!!! My husband and I can watch this movie everyday and still continue to laugh as if it was our first time watching it. We can't wait for it to come out on DVD in January.
For anyone looking to laugh this is a must see.

5 out of 5 stars What Independant films are all about!.......2006-01-04

This is a fantastic film! The story, cinematography and scenery are mesmerizing and inspiring. Starts out seeming to be a fairly unimpressive story, but then blossoms into a masterpiece. I was so taken with this movie that I went out and bought "The Story of San Michele," the book which is a central part of the film's plot. Loved the book too! This movie may serve as an entry point for younger generations to learn about Axel Munthe and "The Story of San Michele," - which is quite a comeback for a 60 year old book.
